Ouroboros: Progress

I haven't written one of these in forever, so it's slightly clunky, but I aim to have one of these out at least every quarter, if not monthly. Let's dive into it! Spoiler warning for the sneak peeks at the bottom.

What I got done since last month:

After the update drop, I took some time off the main story to prevent the budding burnout. I’m sure you are well aware of my malaise by now- it's a constant effort to stay on the tightrope.

I don't think I brought it up explicitly but when I started writing Ouroboros it was me riding the high of becoming a person again right after years long sick leave and battle with mental health, meaning that while I am absolutely thrilled that I'm getting so much out of life again, that fragile part of me still lives on and I have to take care not to let it get the best of me, and that means constant vigilance and self-compassion. Writing a project this big could easily be a full time job on its own, but I also have to account for going back to the workforce after being gone for so long. It's tough! irl work/life keeps amping up and will continue to eat my energy. Though, come summer, I might actually have some good news on my schedule and how my writing will fit into that. Fingers crossed.

Otherwise I have really enjoyed interacting and goofing around with you on tumblr again, and I’ve had a blast just reading and playing games. It was a very welcomed break. I still got a lot done regarding Ouroboros:

- Got started on all the short stories you voted on, and built the framework of code for how stories will be unlocked as you progress the story. 

- I got some much needed help with setting up a side-blog for writing content only; it’s getting there! Soon Ouro will have its own space.

- I added about 3k words to the next chunk of act 1. A drop in the ocean, but progress is progress. 

- I started sneak-writing on the next act and specifically, the underwater/caving chapter. I am so excited for it! Besides writing and hiking, diving and caving are core parts of my interests. (Didn't I once say that Ouro is disgustingly self indulgent? x] Because it sure is.) 

What’s next:

I am still taking it slow, since most of act 1 pt2 is already written  (60k words ish), and I have some responsibilities I’m gonna need to devote my time to. My goals for February are leading up to Ouro’s first anniversary, so I want to prepare something fun for us to enjoy! If it will be a chunk of update or something else remains to be decided. On the 8th of March we ride.

My priorities for February are:

-having fun with the short stories

-get the sideblog up and running with a new FAQ and character pages, and a new intro post.

-solidify the code and scene transitions for the next update 

- (stretch goal) edit/rewrite/add to the unhinged mess that the next update still is 

 Re: bug reports

Thankfully, last update was relatively bug free, but there are still a few reports sitting in my inbox waiting for changes, mainly

-the egregious oversight of having id's romance scenes appearing although the hunter is committed to L/not in the poly. More on that here.

-the questions with Iontif cutting off short in one path

-a section of the flashback with wrong pronouns + other pronoun variables not displaying correctly (the bane of my existence!!)

Thank you to those who reported these, I always note them down if I don't fix them directly. The reason why I am almost always tardy on bug fixes is because I'm treating this as a first draft that will be rewritten; it makes little sense to dedicate so much time to fixing things that will need to be fixed again. I do them when I have little else I want/have to do. I'm sorry! Triaging problem areas is essential to keeping this show going. I hope that it isn't too invasive to have a few errors in the scenes; rest assured that they will get fixed (eventually 🤡)

Re: save system

Something that has really bothered me lately, is thinking about CoG's obstinate refusal to implement save systems. I absolutely won't release Ouroboros without one, as with how much variation goes into the story (and knowing from first-hand experience playing large games, that one miss-click (or that horrendous bug that chooses options for you if you even look at it wrong) will have you go down a path you didn’t want, or you are faced with starting over, which sometimes leads to such fatigue that you just…stop playing.) it feels like shooting yourself in the foot to not have one. And worse, it feels plain cruel to subject the reader to that. There isn’t any possible way to fit every nuance of a choice into the box-text, or to imply a delayed outcome as a result of making a choice that seems very “innocent” at first glance.

So I stand before a really difficult decision; either code a save system from the bottom up, and I would have to do that sooner rather than later, or port the game to twine which brings its own bundle of problems. Right now I honestly no idea what I want to do, and I have to admit that it fuels a bit of writer's block as I feel locked in place until I come to a decision. Heurgh.

Now for the fun part. Sneak peeks!

I wont share the latter parts as they are still... Unhinged. But the next update isn't just romance, its weapons and insidious cults and fighting, too.  More on that, later.

In another time, another place

There’s just something about characters speculating how their lives could have gone differently that is pure catnip to me! Especially characters where, but for a few key choices, they might have wound up as a hero rather than a villain, or vice versa.

Now combine that with having an NPC cosplay alt, meaning that I spend a not-insignificant portion of my FFXIV playtime wondering what that character would think about lots of random stuff.

End result: an entire menagerie of Fordola-centric plot bunnies! This post will be an attempt to corral said bunnies into a form that’s at least somewhat organized. It will also grow over time as I add writeups for new AUs if and when they become relevant to what I’m posting on this sideblog!

WoL!Fordola AU: Not WoLFordola like the ship, WoL!Fordola as in the original Warrior of Light, the Meteor Survivor who fought at Carteneau, who destroyed the Ultima Weapon, who ended the Dragonsong War… he died to Zenos at the end of Stormblood. Oops!

Now Fordola is the only one left who has the fighting skill needed to even have a chance of filling his shoes.

This is the timeline I’m basically writing as I take my alt through the MSQ. It starts out as a continuation of TCaFS (so technically TCaFS is one of my WoL’s backstories in a roundabout way haha). But it gets even weirder. Fordola might be the new WoL, for example, but it’s Krile who is the shard of Azem!

WoL was out fishing, Fordola did the sidequests instead: Not an AU so much as a common premise I use. Fics in this series assume that everything is the same as in canon, including there being some non-specific WoL (maybe even your WoL!) who exists and follows the normal MSQ. However, while they’re busy offscreen somewhere, Fordola is forced to pick up the slack for them and do sidequests where she doesn't usually appear.

My first FFXIV fic (Sympathetic Resonance aka "why is Fordola in Eureka?") would be part of this series, as would my WIP Sorrows of Werlyt fic.

8th Umbral Calamity: Shadowbringers never specifies whether Lyse and Fordola are killed by Black Rose in the bad timeline. What if they weren’t? Lots of fun (and by fun I mean tragic) ways that could play out!

Originally, this was going to be a kind of Apocalypse/Road Trip AU, with Lyse and Fordola traveling through a Black Rose-devastated Ala Mhigo and trying not to to kill each other before they reached Cid and the Ironworks.

Then I was writing an FFxivWrite entry and realized it would be interesting to combine it with another AU I had, where Fordola gets executed by the Resistance and winds up accidentally bodysharing with Lyse…

About this Blog

What is the purpose of this blog?

The purpose of this blog is to highlight podfics of the ship Feng Xin/Mu Qing from Heaven's Official Blessing, as it can be quite a chore to find podfics sometimes. I will provide all the necessary information, including title, name of the author, name of the podficer, tags, summary, rating and length of the podfic in the posts. The posts will not include the soundfiles themselves, but links to where you can find them. Hopefully, this will make podfics more accessible than what platforms like Ao3 have to offer.

Why did I make this blog?

I am a big fan of podfics and I noticed there is a bit of a shortage in podfics within the FengQing community. To help this I want to maybe record my own podfics in the future, but in the meantime I want to bring more attention to the already existing podfics, so more people can enjoy them and might also be inspired to record their own.

On this blog, I will try to assemble any and all podfics centered around the ship FengQing. In the future I will work on a tagging system, but for now there's not that many podfics, so you should be able to work your way through them. I use my own tag #fqpodfic for all future posts, so feel free to block that if you're not interested in it. All posts will also be tagged with the fengqing tag. The posts are not automated, I assemble everything I post myself and rely heavily on things that people are sending me.

If you find a podfic centered around FengQing (or have recorded your own) on any streaming platform or fanfic archive (including but not limited to Spotify, Soundcloud, Youtube, Ao3), please send them to my inbox here or to my main blog @raindrops-on-concrete. Also remember to leave kudos/likes and comment if you liked a podfic. Comments can be specifically about something you liked about the recording or about the fic itself, just be nice. Never leave any negative comments, podficers just like fanfic authors are doing this work for free in their free time.

week 3 - w/c feb 8th

I spoke with my professor today (the same one the recommended me do this sideblog) about this semester's assignment, which is pretty loose and so I'm doing a creative writing piece, and it really make me think about this: is human life worth the exploration?

This is in regard to science fiction of course because real life is very different, and in my context specifically, I mean space travel exploration. It's what my piece will be about, and I thought it might be helpful to put some thoughts down here.

I've yet to decide whether it'll be in the Star Trek universe or not, but for the sake of clarity on this post, I'll say it is.

So often in Trek, we see battles, big and small. Sometimes they're with reoccurring antagonists - like the Cardassians or Romulan - season/show long wars - the Dominion - or just one offs - a lot more in The Original Series. And with these battles, there is a loss of life. Is the mission of exploration worth the risk?

Kirk said in TOS that "risk is [their] business," which yes, exploration means taking risks, and it's fair to say that signing up for Starfleet means signing up for everything that entails (and surely they educate the cadets on these risks in the Academy), but that doesn't negate the reality.

*potential tw in regard to military PTSD* It's unfair to say that, just because a soldier knew what they were getting into upon enlisting and deployment, doesn't negate the PTSD and trauma they suffer because of their military serving.

And I know there is a different between real life and fiction, and that Starfleet is not exactly comparable military (although they are very militaristic in elements), but the point follows: is it worth it?

My piece will follow a young ensign as they become disillusioned to the wonders of space, and asking themselves that very question. They've lost friends, close friends, people they care about, and for what? For some red trees and blue grass? They find themselves weighing up the value of scientific knowledge and the value of sentient life.

I do feel like Kirk's stance about how they signed up for the risk is valid, but I think the perspective is shifted by his position of power; Kirk as the captain will surely have a different view on this compared to a young ensign fresh from the Academy, and I think that’s an important thing to address.

In the real world, looking at for example out own space missions, is the push for exploration worth the seven lives lost in 2003 due to the vehicle disintegration? Surely the answer depends on who you are, as I’m sure the family of those individuals will feel differently about it compared to myself, a strangler to the situation. 

I just think it’s a really important topic that I feel hasn’t really been given justice in the show. Hopefully my piece will be able to do something.

Sherlock Christmas cards exchange 2019

Good news, everyone! I am not dead, and the next holiday cards exchange is approaching! Without further ado, here is all relevant info:

start registration: friday 8th November end registration: sunday 2nd December exchange begin: friday 6th December

All GMT+1 timezone

how to register: email me your name, postal address and email address (where I can later send you a pdf file to) to xmas.at.bakerstreet@gmail.com. Subject line should say sherlock xmas 2019 registration, to make it easier for me to sort through emails. You can also include twitter, tumblr or other handles or info if you want them included but you don’t have to.

Please no asks on tumblr for registering, I can only accept these via email.

how does it work?

As you can see, there is a registration window. During that time you can register and become a participant. I will put all adresses and other info I get emailed in a pdf file, in completely random order. After registration closes, and as soon as I have finished the pdf file I will send out that list to all participants, and ONLY to participants. Usually there will be another day or two where people notice some smaller mistakes on their adresses or similar and I have to make some corrections, which means before you send out any cards make sure I have sent you the final version of the list.

Not many, but please make sure you are aware and follow them:

1. Treat ALL information you receive on the list absolutely confidential! I cannot stress this enough. There should be enough time for anyone to be able to register and put their name on the list, so do not, under any circumstances send that list to anyone else. No matter if they claim to be on it or if the dog ate it or whatever. Not to your friends, followers, siblings, grandma, Steven Moffat or your cat. If there are any questions regarding this feel free to send me an email or tumblr ask.

2. You have to send at least one card, to the person that is below you on the list. If you happen to be last on the list, you send one to the person who is first. That way we can make sure everyone gets at least one random christmas card and no one is left out.

3. Be nice to each other. I realise the Sherlock fandom is at times a big and messy place and there are many different opinions and discussions. But this cards exchange is not about that, it’s simply about having a good time and doing something nice.

A Supernatural Christmas cards exchange

So, the second Supernatural christmas cards exchange is go! Here is how to participate:

start registration: friday 8th November end registration: sunday 2nd December exchange begin: friday 6th December

All GMT+1 timezone

how to register: email me your name, postal address and email address (where I can later send you a pdf file to) to spn.xmas@gmail.com . Subject line should say Supernatural xmas 2019 registration, to make it easier for me to sort through emails. You can also include twitter, tumblr or other handles or info if you want them included but you don’t have to.

Please no asks on tumblr for registering, I can only accept these via email.

how does it work?

As you can see, there is a registration window. During that time you can register and become a participant. I will put all adresses and other info I get emailed in a pdf file, in completely random order. After registration closes, and as soon as I have finished the pdf file I will send out that list to all participants, and ONLY to participants. Usually there will be another day or two where people notice some smaller mistakes on their adresses or similar and I have to make some corrections, which means before you send out any cards make sure I have sent you the final version of the list.

the rules

Not many, but please make sure you are aware and follow them:

1. Treat ALL information you receive on the list absolutely confidential! I cannot stress this enough. There should be enough time for anyone to be able to register and put their name on the list, so do not, under any circumstances send that list to anyone else. No matter if they claim to be on it or if the dog ate it or whatever. Not to your friends, followers, siblings, grandma, Steven Moffat or your cat. If there are any questions regarding this feel free to send me an email or tumblr ask.

2. You have to send at least one card, to the person that is below you on the list. If you happen to be last on the list, you send one to the person who is first. That way we can make sure everyone gets at least one random christmas card and no one is left out.

3. Be nice to each other. I realise the Sherlock fandom is at times a big and messy place and there are many different opinions and discussions. But this cards exchange is not about that, it’s simply about having a good time and doing something nice.

Ahhh...I keep seeing you talk about promare and it seems so good! It looks like something I’d really like but sadly I don’t live in a populated area and I don’t think it will be coming back to theaters here—I might’ve missed my chance (if there was even one to begin with....) ( T ^T) I really do worry I’m bothering people since usually I try to keep my sideblogs to their intended content. But I can’t contain all these emotions, the dumb shitposts and good fanmixes just NEED to be shared.

I hope you get to see it someday soon!!! it’s still playing in some places in the US but it might be in other big cities, all I know is that it’s left NYC finally. Worst comes to worst, the DVD comes out in February, and I think online bootlegs will become more readily available once that happens (trust me, there are NONE right now – I have multiple friends looking). Personally I’m also confident that Netflix will pick it up, since they have a number of other Trigger series. Don’t lose hope!!!

Tag Game

I was tagged by the amazing @theonceoverthinker. Thank you so much! I just saw my schedule for the second term and I needed something to distract me from the horror that it is and this game came just in time.

Nickname: My parents call me Mimi. Other people have called me Mary but I prefer people to use my actual name. It’s not that long anyway.

Last movie I saw: The Road to El Dorado. I just rewatched it yesterday for the millionth time. I love this movie so much! It’s soooo good!!!!

Favorite musicians: Well, that’s hard but: Lana Del Rey, Marina and the Diamonds, Maroon 5, Lady Gaga, Melanie Martinez and probably a few others.

Song stuck in my head: Currently, Hellfire XD. The song is a masterpiece; I can’t help it! I’m always one step away from starting to sing Poor Unfortunate Souls too.

Do I get asks: No. No, and I’m sad about it. I love asks.

Amount of sleep: Usually varying between 6 and 12 hours. My sleeping schedule is pure disaster. And my new schedule for uni will not help at all!

Lucky number: 8! I have always loved eight! If you turn it to the side, you get the symbol for infinity and that’s pretty cool. I’m also born on 8th September so that might have something to do with it too.

What I’m wearing: Grey slacks and a purple sweater. I love purple!

Dream job: Um... not really sure about that. When I was little I wanted to be an archaeologist. Now I want to be a writer but I wouldn’t exactly call that a job. It’s more of a passion. However, I do plan on getting another job. I just don’t know what I want it to be yet.

Dream trip: Egypt, here I come! Spain and Venice are also at the top of my list of places I want to visit.

Favorite food: Just one? Well, okay, potatoes. I just love all kinds of potatoes. I could eat potatoes all the time.

Play any instruments: Nope. And I’ve never wanted to learn to play any either.

Favorite song: Error 404, file not found. I can’t choose just one. I love “Crazy in Love” but not the original version. I dig all the other versions more than the original.

Random fact: I love travelling and I wish to go on an around the world trip but I’ve only been abroad once so far (and it’s getting on my nerves)

TOUMAKI MONTH 2018

Hello there, fellow TouMaki fans!

This is Jules speaking, from the sideblog formerly known as toumakisecretsanta and now updated to toumakibangs (in order to keep things as generic as possible and allow me to run as many TouMaki events as I want without confusing you with multiple sideblogs).

WELCOME TO YOUR TOUMAKI_EVENTS CENTRAL, FOLKS!

Given last year’s success, I am very proud to announce you that the TOUMAKI MONTH will run again on 2018!

Here’s everything you need to know about it:

PROMPTS:

TOUMAKI MONTH  is a prompt-based event. What prompts can you request? a) Those under the Read More at the bottom of this post: there, you will find links to several prompt lists you can use as inspiration. b) Any prompt coming from a list you stumbled upon and fell in love with. c) Any prompt you came up with yourself.*

I don’t put limits on what constitutes as “prompt”: it can be a concept, a word, a dialogue, a specific setting… it’s your event and your request: you name it! Please keep in mind that the prompt could end up to a writer or an artist, so if you would like to see your idea brought to life in a specific medium, tell me! :)

[*I do reserve the right to accept certain kinds of prompts, because there are topics/scenarios that I might not feel like writing, but we’re talking about potentially triggering/delicate issues, I’m pretty sure I won’t have trouble with 99.9% of your requests]

HOW DO YOU SUBMIT YOUR PROMPTS? By dropping a private/chat message to THIS TUMBLR, either: a) Stating the name of the list and the number/letter that identifies the single prompt (this is very important because there are multiple lists, so if you only write me the number/letter I might not be able to go back to the right prompt). b) Stating you’re sending a request for TouMaki Month and writing down the prompt directly (either from a list or if you came up with it on your own).

Sending your requests at julesdrenages.tumblr.com will work as well, but for purely managerial reasons I’d prefer if you wrote here. Anyway, feel free. The important thing is that I receive them! XD

WHEN CAN YOU SUBMIT YOUR PROMPTS? Whenever you like, from May 14th to May 31st.

HOW MANY PROMPTS WILL I ACCEPT? Right now, I have 33 slots open, one for each day from July 7th to August 8th. There are no limits to the number of prompts a single person can request and I will fill in the slots following the ‘first come, first serve’ rule. I will try to keep the prompt lists as updated as possible, so you can see daily which prompts have already been claimed and pick something else, but in case of double requests, the one that came second will be discarded and the prompter notified, so they can submit a different request. To ease this exchanges, it would be best if you made your requests off-anon (again, just a suggestion).

Now, WHO IS GOING TO FULLFIL THE PROMPTS? That’s where the novelty comes: a) ME, of course, pretty much like last year. b) ANYONE who is willing to participate: that’s right! If you feel like there’s a specific scenario you’ve always wanted to explore, you can “self-prompt” yourself and just sign-up with your own ficlet/drawing! Likewise, if you feel like fulfilling one or two requests, you can choose to receive a random prompt or pick one among those we received! If you would like to join the party as an author (either a writer or an artist), just MESSAGE ME AT THIS TUMBLR stating your preferred mean of communication (mail, tumblr, etc) and if you’d prefer: a) Submit your own ficlet/drawing, specifically written/drawn for the event without prompting. b) Pick a prompt from the lists I provided (and in that case specify which prompt you want). c) Pick a prompt from the ones we received. d) Be assigned by me a random prompt from the ones we received (we can discuss preferences beforehand).

We will discuss the technicalities of posting after prompting closes and assignments are sent.

hey y’all! My name’s Kuhu and as the recent trend might suggest, this is a post to introduce myself! 

The rundown: 

- My name’s Kuhu, I’m 15 (lol), and I’m going into the 11th grade at a school in the Bay Area, California!

- I speak English and Hindi, and I’m currently learning Spanish, French, and German. 

- I had a previous studyblr (thosegoodgrades) which failed because I kept forgetting to post since it was a sideblog. But I’m starting anew with this blog, and at a time where I may need it most since... 

- I will be taking AP Calculus AB, AP Computer Science, APUSH, AP Lit, Honors Spanish (4 for you Californians), Honors Physics, and Yoga (though who cares about yoga though, am i right?) 

- I will be getting a puppy soon (!!!), so look out for pictures of them! 

- I have taken AP Biology and AP World History if you ever need any help with those subjects!
