personally I think that’s a matter of perception. yes the films are a clear metaphor for mental illness but I think it’s more about bottling up your trauma until it’s too late.

skye and rose both had a lot of trauma they hadn’t dealt with properly.

and with skye, it was very apparent she was being pushed into things she wasn’t ready for with the tour. she was literally still in physical pain, let alone mental, from the car crash, which was the whole reason she went to lewis - which ultimately lead to her getting the curse - in the first place for drugs to numb the pain. her mother - an utter piece of shit btw - was pushing her into this too early and telling her they couldn’t cancel it.

the monster essentially simulates a mental illness - hallucinations, etc. - and feeds off of your trauma but it in itself is not a mental illness, it’s just a kind of allegory for what heavy trauma can do to people if not dealt with properly.
