Short stories, novels, or poems?

i started with poetry, so it has a special place in my heart. all of my short stories turn into beasts. is it a cop out answer to say all of the above?

What genre do you prefer reading?

it'd be easier to list what genres i don't like. when i say ill read anything, i mean ill read anything. lately i've been on a sci fi kick (thanks Pierce Brown) but i love a good modern trashy romance as much as the next guy (i read the booktok sludge so you dont have to!) im not really a nonfiction guy but hey, if anyone has some recs, ill give em a shot

Are you a planner or a write as I go kind of person?

def NOT a planner. usually when i start writing i have a vague idea of where we start and where we need to end up, but what happens along the way is a surprise for everyone involved

What music do you listen to while writing?

SILENCE. sometimes white noise. i cant focus with music, brain gets jumbled

Favorite books/movies?

of all time? oh god for books, probably This Is How You Lose the Time War or The Song of Achilles but The Locked Tomb series is def up there. not a novel but i've read Bluets by Maggie Nelson so many times i probably have it memorized by now favorite movie is Zoolander, easy answer. that movie owns. i can watch it on repeat and ill never get sick of it

Any current WIPs?

Dust to Dust is still alive but im taking a bit of a hiatus before hopping into the final bit (tag is here if you wanna see me ramble about it) Felix Wonder is the fun time brain break WIP of choice currently and im working on draft 3 of Burden of the Reluctant Death (we will get to the ending this time. we will)

Create a character description of yourself: 

Elusive, or pretends to be. Too much energy in too small a body. Refuses to sit properly in a chair. Prone to fits of melancholy remedied by sunlight. Easily excitable, but fussy. this really isnt fantasy but i feel like i was destined to be the kind, slightly off-putting maintenance man in a haunted apartment building that says cryptic things like "don't take the east elevator on a full moon" and "the air conditioning has made that noise since the fire in 12B"

confession scenes of any kind! scenes where the big tough character breaks down. any kind of emotional revelation, positive or negative

Reason for writing?

words in head, need words out of head ok ok fine, serious answer. i feel like writing is both asking and answering the question, "have you felt like this before? has anyone ever felt like this before? am i alone?" and it's proof that you're not the first and only person to ever experience the things you're experiencing. even this made up guy in this pretend world understands rage and despair and joy and grief and love. the source is different but the result is the same. human connection, man. love it and! it's fun. im having fun

i dont think it automatically shows a lack of intelligence or passion for film like at all to stick to only writing meme of week one liner jokes for reviews its definitely something that people get stuck in too because it is so easy and natural and something really pushed for on letterboxd + i know some people also feel pressured to write long thought out detailed reviews of every single movie they watch even when they arent feeling it or cant and a lot of people just feel pressured to write a review at all but they dont really know what to say or what to add to it so its just quick and simple to write out a one liner. its even more easy when people eat it up and laugh at it so much and the wholeeee list of top reviews becomes only those reviews but that is To Me a little sad and frustrating and i too get sick of seeing them everyyywhere and it is the same jokes/memes of the week over and over and just feels very overdone and unfunny 😭 like its not always easy to be genuine and sincere and really think about things But... thats the beauty of it its really good to push yourself to do those things anyways.. doesnt have to be 24/7 but it is a good thing to make yourself think and put your thoughts and feelings into words if you can thats all.. also i dont really care what anyone does in the grand scheme of things i know its something thats just become normal and usual too i just thought since i was on the topic id add this

Probably "Semper Fidelis" from season 2. I think this is one of those episodes that is just rife with all the things that made that season not work for me. The Punisher trial could have been so interesting and it gets kneecapped because Elektra is impatient. Matt makes bad decisions for no real reason and his and Elektra's stuff is treated like it's SO time sensitive, but it's really not, it's just there to throw a wrench in the works. It sticks out like a sore thumb, and I just hate when I'm watching a show and I'm yelling, "Get back to the GOOD part!"

matt murdock fanon headcanon or joke?

If I never have to hear the "What to Daredevil and Scarlet Witch have in common" joke again, that would be great. Thanks. I'll be minding my own beeswax on instagram and then a random Turkish comic meme blog will show up in my feed and I can't read the language but I *KNOW* what it says and it wasn't even that funny the first time, guys. Let it go.

marvel movie or show?

Eternals was pretty darn boring for all the people in it that I wanted to like. I got a kick out of the Bollywood bit and then... the rest just didn't hold up to even its own internal logic. It's pretty bad when the fanbase is *begging* for the movie to be quietly erased from canon.

fic trope?

Probably "Dark!" versions of characters. I realize this sounds counterintuitive, given my love of Murderdock, but I think when I've given these fics a chance, they just tend to be, "Hey if your blorbo killed 10 guys with a rock and then kissed his love interest would that be fucked up or what" and there's not a lot of... *there* there. Or else they tend to read like someone is trying to convince me how dark and edgy they are and it's just... too difficult for me to get emotionally invested. Sorry, gang. I'm a hypocrite.

book you had to read at school as a kid?

The Witch of Blackbird Pond. I was assigned this book two years in a row and was bored to tears both times. I still have no clue what it was about because I could not focus on anything, I just remember being annoyed by the protagonist. I just tried to look up a summary and my brain still rejected it. :/

place you went to for fun (doesn't have to be a whole vacation destination)?

I'm just really not a beach person. I've been to Miami and stuff and I'm like. Yep. There's water next to some sand. Can we go home now? (I prefer the atmosphere of rocky beaches. There is Alaska in my bones.)

My dad was one of like 11 kids, which meant I had a lot of aunts and uncles and countless cousins and for *years* the Thanksgiving tradition was to drive two hours to my grandmother's house where dozens of people would collect for a potluck. Being a dorky sci-fi and comic book reading nerd in a family of football enthusiasts aside, this meant that Thanksgiving dinner tended to be giant aluminum pans of dry turkey, gravy with mysterious bits one person in the family liked and overdone brown-and-serve rolls. It was often the worst meal of the year for me. Eventually when I was in high school, my older sisters decided enough was enough and we had Thanksgiving at home and it turns out, I actually like turkey when it wasn't cooked 10 hours before I get to eat it.

Oooo sure! I'm always willing to share my headcannons :D Thank you so much for asking <3. There's a touch of thoughts about their actual smoking habits in this as well just because.

Sticking this below a readmore for the sake of peoples scrolling.

Mountain: I like to think that despite growing some top notch strains he only ever smokes with the other ghouls. He likes letting them testing out his newer stuff before he tries it (for science). More of an edible enjoyer. One of the times he's a little less serious. The ghouls know his dry sense of humor pretty well due to the nature of their bond but will actually crack jokes that outsiders would get too. Follows them up with a little Nick Offerman laugh.

Rain: Gets so eepy and cuddly when he's high. Will curl up into one of the other ghouls sides or lap and just vibe until he eventually dozes off as they talk to him. He tries his best not to, but it always inevitably happens. Everyone finds it endearing though. Mountain's favorite test subject for new stuff cause then he gets a sweet cuddly pretty little water ghoul out of it.

Swiss: chatty boy! He has got a lot of thoughts and they will be heard by whoever else he is with. Rain's favorite person to smoke with for this reason. He will just stream of consciousness talk at him until they pass out and even a little past that. When smoking alone he'll pick up the acoustic he keeps in the corner of his room and just sort of noodle around as a way to work out his thoughts. Perceived to have the best tolerance among the ghouls.

Dew: Thinks he has a better tolerance than Swiss, he is wrong. Extremely tactile. Touching anywhere and everywhere he can just cause he likes the contact. One of three times he will purr for the other ghouls. If smoking with Swiss he gets just as chatty. They will be talking rapid fire about completely different things while still following each others stories.

Aether: Listen, I love him so much, but he is absolute shit at figuring out how much to smoke and gets overdone super easily. Ends up staring into space thinking his thoughts and being like "my fingers cannot touch each other. I don't know why but they just cant"

Cirrus: Actually has the best tolerance out of all the ghouls but is super chill about it. Will use air magics to do silly little smoke tricks to make the others laugh. Kinda like Mountain she has a reputation for being more stern and serious but will come up with jokes out of left field when high that shock the ghouls as much as they make them laugh. Mostly smokes by herself or with Mountain.

Cumulus: Feel like this one is kinda common but gets even bubblier when high. Also a very touchy ghoul when high, but will pull others into her lap instead of the other way around. Makes a lot of edibles mostly so Mountain will have fun with everyone else, but also cause she likes it. Will hotbox the shit out of anyone else she is smoking with. Loves to shotgun off of Cirrus.

Sunny: Is actually slightly allergic to it, but nothing major. Will occasionally take like a benadyrl after but that's it. Every time she smokes the other ghouls loose track of her for like an hour and then she suddenly returns with some random new sibling that's her new best friend for the night. None of the ghouls ever notice her slip out she just is there one second and then she's gone.

recently i bought an n64 with some games (as of rn its just sm64, mariokart 64 and buck bumble,) yea so my goal is to 100% the game before fighting final bowser. things r going fine, i knockout all of floor 1, i knock out, from what im aware, almost all the secret stars. i hit floor two after doing bbh, lethat lava was alright, a little challenging but this fucking level is hell.

bro if ur gonna make a tourettic character only to be the comic relief at least do it right. ‘haha coprolalia funny’ is so overdone and unoriginal. be creative. just make a funny character already and then you can do SOME gags with their tics. 

not every tic has to be funny bro but every day i wake up and get a mug of water to simulate the feeling of having coffee. and about 40% of the time i just turn the mug over and have to clean up water, sometimes multiple times in a row. i always pretend im in a sitcom and there’s a laugh track and i think that’s a pretty fun gag. *flips mug over. looks into camera* its a running joke. or like, “you broke it?!” “i don’t know why you keep handing me things i feel that we’ve established i’m not the best with fragile items.” i think deadpan delivery reactions for tics is good. 

a tourettic character who makes up increasingly weirder and crazier stories for why they’re ‘doing that’ like c’mon that shits hilarious utilize that. or the classic ‘ok, don’t move a muscle, i’ll be right back’ ‘i physically can’t do that but okay.’ any sort of ‘keep ur eyes open’ or whatever phrase should always be responded to with a ‘no’ even if its figurative, especially if its figurative.

none of the characters remember some long sequence of words or code or whatever but the tourettic character picked it up as a tic. seriously, tics can remember or even do things that you don’t know how to do. i’ve ticced entire conversations before having only listened to them once, but i couldn’t recite them on my own. i cant whistle but i can when i tic. there are all sorts of things you could do with that.

y’know just.. don’t make their tourettes their only funny quality. they’re funny already as a character, but because they have tourettes and tourettes is a part of them i think it can be used for jokes too. because honestly what makes having ts easier is all the great jokes you can make about it. make the jokes a for ppl with tourettes to laugh at, not for ppl to laugh at tourettes.

Michael in the Mainstream - Phineas and Ferb the Movie: Candace Against the Universe

I love Phineas and Ferb. I mean, who doesn’t? It’s funny, it’s witty, it manages to make repetition fantastic and enjoyable, it has awesome musical numbers, it has Perry the platypus and Dr. Doofenshmirtz… there’s something for everyone here! So of course I was excited to see what they’d do when they released a big Phineas and Ferb movie to Disney+; I mean, the TV movie Across the 2nd Dimension was an awesome movie with a pretty epic scope, so surely something released to Disney’s own streaming service ten years later would be even better, right?

Well… no. This was a good movie for sure, but it really doesn’t hold a candle to Across the 2nd Dimension.

Candace Against the Universe is a fun film for sure, bringing the gang back together for another ride as they go on a journey to rescue Candace and Vanessa from an alien planet. There’s some cute but not overdone callbacks to the rest of the series, the kids teaming up with Doof, there’s plenty of fun and funny songs that don’t overstay their welcome, and tons of meta humor and fourth wall breaks, including what may be one of the funniest fourth wall breaks in all of cinema. So, really, there’s nothing truly bad with this movie; in fact, I might even go as far to say that it’s consistently funnier than Across the 2nd Dimension. In that way, it’s a lot like Sponge Out of Water, which I thought was a much funnier film than the original SpongeBob movie…

...But it also shares that film’s biggest weakness. Sponge Out of Water is a very funny and enjoyable film, but it doesn’t have that same emotional punch the first film did. Candace Against the Universe is certainly not lacking in emotion or heartfelt moments, but it never really seems to try for that same emotional punch that the whole plotline with Perry had in the original film. Sure, Candace’s struggles and the ultimate payoff are sweet, but they seem oddly underplayed and nowhere near as hard-hitting or grand as the ending of Across the 2nd Dimension. Honestly, a lot of it leads to more jokes, which is honestly fine; I don’t mind that this is more of a fun, funny movie. But is honestly doesn’t have that grand feeling a movie based on a show should.

Think of this: Beavis and Butt-Head Do America, South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, The Jungle Movie, Big Picture Show… what do all of these movies based off of cartoons have in common? The answer is they have a level of grandiose scale not usually present in their respective shows, even if they have the same basic premises. Like, yes, there are plenty of episode of Beavis and Butt-Head where they try and score, but how many have them going across America to try and score, causing problems and having heavy metal hallucinations along the way? Sure, there are Ed, Edd n Eddy episodes where their scams go awry, but where else but the movie does this lead into a cross-country race to find Eddy’s brother? Even Sponge Out Of Water manages to feel a bit grand even if the basic premise is just “someone steals the secret formula,” because superpowered space dolphins, time travel, and teamups with Plankton are not typically the direction these episodes go. With Candace Against the Universe, the plot just doesn’t really do much to make itself feel grand or epic in that movie way; nothing in this film really feels like it would be out of place in an episode of the show, honestly.

Of course, this isn’t necessarily a bad thing! The Friendship is Magic movie and Mask of the Phantasm are also both glorified TV episodes that manage to enjoy decent reputations, so it’s not like this film is in completely bad company or anything. It’s just kind of a shame that it just doesn’t really offer anything you can’t get in the show for the most part. Still, as far as Phineas and Ferb content goes, this is a really solid effort, and I honestly cant say it’s bad. It’s a perfect little extended episode for anyone who liked the show; if you’re a fan of the episodes, you’ll be a fan of this, but you have to go in with tempered expectations. If you’re expecting anything on the level of Across the 2nd Dimension, you’re gonna feel let down. Unlike that film, and much like something like Mask of the Phantasm, this ultimately feels like a very solid episode of the show that probably didn’t need to be a movie.

Still, that one fourth wall break almost makes it all worth it. You’ll know it when you see it.

genuinely curious: do you think that the depictions of homophobic abuse and violence towards lgbt characters in tlou2 outweighs the portrayal of their other experiences and happy moments of love/self expression? is it bad representation if the lgbt characters go through strife and pain as well as being happy and allowed to express themselves? i feel like there are valid criticisms to be made, but views on lgbt rep tend to be pretty polarized, either "it's great" or "it's bad" with no nuance

I think a big issue I have with the characters and representation specifically in The Last of Us 2 is that in the game the characters feel like they were created solely to serve a point in the plot, the game’s tone is progressively bleak (and the violence is gratuitous), and the inclusion of bigotry also felt unnecessary.

As a disclaimer, I’m not saying tlou2, Naughtydog, or even Neil Druckmann is simply homophobic because the gay character gets in fights and all that, but for me personally I felt that the treatment of lgbt characters in the game made me uncomfortable and wasn't satisfying. I’m glad they weren't outright stereotypes, but I’d like it if there was a bit kinder treatment of these characters. It just really feels like nd heard they didn’t do diversity well in the first game and just threw in a bunch of poc and lgbt characters without really thinking... I don’t think what happens is homophobic, but it feels very thoughtless.

The characters in tlou2 are not well done, I’m not sure what happened between The Last of Us and tlou2, but they do not feel the same at all. Every character in the game feels very weak and the player themselves cant name 10 facts about each one, even characters like Abby or Dina (I’m excluding Ellie and Joel because they already existed). This applies the most to Jessie imo, but I’ll only discuss Ellie, Dina, and Lev since they are the lgbt characters in the game. in tlou2 Ellie is just the vengeful character and as Neil put it, “the villain.” tlou2 could have been a wonderful opportunity to add more to her story, but here she’s basically just the traumatized girl who likes girls and is playing the guitar to remember Joel. Dina is basically the player’s partner who is randomly benched halfway through and from a narrative point she is something that Ellie can lose, you learn she has some ability with tinkering, she is Jewish, bi, has a sister... and not much else. Finally Lev feels like the main justification to sympathize with Abby, without Abby he is introduced literally being hunted because he is trans. Every character in the game is like this, but with these three very prominent characters, it’s disappointing.

Next, for tlou2 the violence seems to be double what happened in tlou, being much more detailed and forcing you to look at what is happening (Ellie getting her face smashed in and Abby threatening to kill Dina and its good because she is pregnant). Tlou was able to thread the needle concerning this successfully; having Ellie being kidnapped, hunted, and almost being sexually assaulted to immediately having the famous scene where Joel and Ellie pet giraffes. Tlou also (to my knowledge) did not have those shock value moments 2 constantly has, and when there is violence its rarely explicitly shown. Now in tlou2 this is almost the opposite, instead of going back and forth between intense and calm scenes, the sequel seems to steadily go downhill in tone. I know that these specific characters arent being hurt BECAUSE they’re lgbt, but its still not good to see.

The happiest moments are the beginning with Dina and Ellie, but while they're having fun and making out together what’s happening? Joel is currently getting his face caved in by Abby. Halfway through the game after Ellie and Dina are beaten, it seems to go back up in tone, but ooc tommy forces Ellie to turn back to revenge and the whole thing comes crashing back down. “I’m afraid of ending up alone” Ellie chooses to leave Dina and Ellie’s life is now hell going all the way back to Abby. After all this Ellie comes back to their house but her family is no longer there. Ellie is alone. I have a huge issue with the ending and it’s that you are explicitly shown that everything there is sad. Nd doesn't make “letting go” of Joel a relief, and they don’t show any implication of Ellie reuniting with Dina. Our lesbian protagonist is now living her worst fear, even though she did the “right” thing and spared Abby. Lev’s ending is clearly better because he’s affiliated with Abby, but it doesn’t change that throughout the story he’s repeatedly hurt and has a similar fall to Ellie after Abby thinks she finds the fireflies, he is never explicitly shown recovering from being made a literal slave and almost crucified.

My last issue is that the bigotry is entirely uncalled for, especially in a world that is as already violent as they’ve made tlou2. One of the most striking moments to me in tlou2 is Dina saying, “What’s this” referring to lgbt flags, indicating she has no concept of pride for being bisexual. Ellie also has no clue and they joke about the erotica and thats the end of that. Later Ellie is called a slur. The man who does it isnt exactly punished and Ellie is forced to make up with him later. That scene and the scene at the end somehow included Ellie, but clearly were about Joel. The last flashback is used as a tragic “Ellie could have forgiven Joel but he was killed :(” scene, there’s very little focus about her sexuality positively. Ellie and Dina are also never openly gay, the one time they are (in a room full of maybe 50 people) Ellie is called a d*ke. Ellie’s previous gf is scrapped except for subtle concept art and notes and she only has one conversation in the beginning mentioning a her.

Then on the opposite side of characters, Lev’s entire story outside of and before Abby is being hunted simply because he is trans. He’s deadnamed multiple times and even Abby cluelessly says it (??). There’s endless reasons why he could have been hunted (hell, just simply wanting to leave the cult because theyre so violent), but nd went with this... for some reason. Him being trans is also never discussed in a positive way other than Abby’s weird attempt to make him feel better by giving him a toy (”Hey, I know your group you grew up with and family literally wants you dead, but uh, would a toy help?”). Lev THEN goes BACK to the people who wants him dead, and we’re shown that his mother has viciously attacked him and he accidentally kills her due to this. Him being trans is never mentioned again... I don’t think we have to exactly hide homophobia in fiction, but I personally do not play a game to get called a slur, I can find that irl. Also if these things were to be included, they could have at least shown comfort after, but they don’t. The scenes are simply more shocking violence and are never mentioned again, simply skipped over. Nd used these characters being lgbt as an excuse for them to be discriminated against for it instead of anything positive.

Their advertising of Ellie kissing a girl in 2018 and in 2020 having her be called a slur instantly after what was shown to us is just SO jarring... Nd and their stans like to say, “Well if you don’t like The Last of Us 2, you’re just homophobic.” but that’s honestly so ridiculous. There simply can’t be more instances of oppression than acceptance and think you're doing something good?? Revealing Lev’s deadname gives people an opportunity to be transphobic, having Ellie be called a slur and lash out at Joel after gives people a reason to be angry at her there. You simply can’t include these things if it can do the opposite thing that you want. The point of including minorities in fiction should be so people can related and identify with these characters, not as some virtual reminder that people will hate you specifically for these reasons. It should not be too much to ask for a character you are like to be treated well and nd not listening to fans critique the game is sad,

I suppose I appreciate the attempt at inclusion, but it feels like a failed one that I preferred would not have happened, or at least had been strongly corrected. It would have been different if maybe Ellie had reunited with Dina apologizing, Abby telling Lev she supports him, Joel saying he loves Ellie, or even Dina and Ellie talking about being gay in some way thats anything other than making out and calling each other “babe”, but idk... that didn’t happen. Dina and Ellie are clearly supposed to be the main rep, but I feel like they really missed things they could have mentioned. This rep really reminds me of Life is Strange, but I can’t decide if dying or ending up alone and depressed at the end is worse. I’m probably missing more things but yeah... It would be cool if my lesbian protagonist did not have to be traumatized for an overdone, useless story.

i have issues w a few scenes but.. either kray being revealed to be burnish or the promare leaving. ive talked abt both of them b4 but with kray, the ‘oppressor has been part of the oppressed group the whole time!’ thing is overdone and bad and genuinely sucks a lot in like every instance but especially this one. kray shouldve just had a gun or something. i really dont think much would have changed. he couldve had some sort of device that used OTHER ppls flames as a weapon and just attacked things w that?? i havent considered that one tho so there may b issues w it i havent seen yet. as for the promare leaving, it changed what the movie was trying to say and they really shouldve just had them stay. even just reducing their power and keeping them wouldve been fine, fire aliens cant rly be a 1:1 metaphor for anything so just making it.. manageable? they DID say it was (vaguely) an illness metaphor ultimately so just manageable fire wouldve worked

genuinely cant tell if i’m a little resentful or not ABOUT the production value of chibnall era, bc like?

like the show looks stunning. idk SHIT abt cinematography, im going to be frank; and i dont rlly dissect visuals that much, ever, so i can’t say anything about how meaningful it is. maybe it’s all just bells and whistles. but it does LOOK very pretty!!!! lighting is gorgeous; everything is framed so well. looks like a god damn movie. almost to the point where its overdone- because by god, there’s some fuckin scenes that give you fucking astigmatism scares. nonetheless, i do think it’s the best looking doctor who has ever been, in a while, but like...

it just feels like such a shame tht its so POLISHED when the writing is not. im not shitting necessarily on chibnall, when i say that: sans timeless children, i think there’s so much potential in what he tried to do. but it needed several more rewrites, that it sorely didnt get. and it almost feels wasted? or like their time REALLY should have been spent elsewhere- and i know that’s not exactly how it works, but if they didnt put all their money, time and effort into it LOOKING really good... couldn’t they have potentially done better with the actual show?

and idk. maybe i am truly speaking to my own personal tastes, here: but i do not care at all if doctor who looks good. it’s fucking doctor who. and it just.. it even gets 2 a point where TONALLY it feels wrong? everything slapping in fugitive of the judoon felt right; but there’s these scenes where they’re just having a god damn conversation in the tardis, and again that astigmatism lense comes on or it’s lit up all low and moody and colourful. some gorgeous fuckn view of the doctor, as she, like, what... makes a corny little joke... somethin abt it feels so stilted to me!!!! its lost its charm, and its campiness. and again thts not to say it has to look UGLY as fuck but like... god it just feels so overdone for what it is! which again, isnt me saying that it doesnt DESERVE this kinda visuals but its not right for it!!!!
