okay given how fucking weird and rapid-fire everything is (already, has been for ages) and to remind myself too: We Need To Learn To Fact Check.

i am talking about anything we see about trumps antics and I am talking about international news and I am talking about local news and I am talking about nearly everything in our lives. it is tiring, and takes more effort. but i think this is the only way we get thru the world right now, is by checking what we share however we can. it won't guarantee we are sharing only accurate info, but it DOES help us focus on sharing more accurate stuff and not buying into mis and disinfo.

Context/why i know this: im an academic librarian. I teach classes and do research on misinformation and media literacy among other topics, and i teach about authority of information and finding and evaluating info all the time. when I teach people to evaluate information i use Mike Caulfield's SIFT method, which is great and adaptable, and consists of these four moves:

STOP. this is the most important one. it just means: take two seconds before you click reblog or share smth. ask yourself: what is my emotional reaction to this content? what does it want me to do with this post or information?

do I know this is true - bc I've already checked into it before or I know something related to it that corroborates it - or am I far enough removed from the situation that I don't really know? for ex: I know gazans fundraise on tumblr bc i have tunblr, and that conditions in gaza are awful bc of both user posts and news coverage I've seen. I don't have tiktok or see much from it that isnt reposted, so I paused more before sharing that last post bc im less aware of the cjrcumstances.

INVESTIGATE THE SOURCE. where did this come from and do I know that source of information? can i identify the author not just the website it was shared from? what position is this person in to know what's going on? they might have expertise, education, a job, they might also just be in a place where things are happening (ukraine, gaza, los angeles, etc) or have access to a place where things are happening (tiktok, for ex).

FIND ADDITIONAL COVERAGE. if this is the only place you've heard about an event or statement, look and see if there are others reporting on it. sometimes you are looking for broad coverage (lots and lots of reporters and civilians have reported on the conditions in Gaza independently) and sometimes for very specific coverage (i wanted to see more than one screenshot of the TikTok ban msg before I believed it was real), but what you really want is to see if others are talking about and reporting on something.

this is called lateral reading btw and it's a really critical piece of fact checking.

TRACE CLAIMS TO THEIR SOURCE. who was the first to say this? where did they say it? was it misinterpreted along the way? the internet is a giant game of telephone and messages get distorted. this one is particularly important if you're not finding additional coverage AND/OR if the coverage is all weirdly samey.

highly specific example here: in 2020 there was a brief time when ppl were saying that ibuprofen was dangerous for covid and could heighten your risk. i am ibuprofens georg and I was on it 2x/day high dose at the time, so this could be a problem for me. so I started citations tracing - following citations and references and news posts and academic preprints. and finally found a brief and uncited Twitter post from a French health minister that appeared to be the original source, and along the way I found NO other corroborating info that wasn't citing that specific quote in the end. and thus. I took my ibuprofen.

this part takes time and effort more than anything else, but it's also often illuminating. I dont always go all the way to TRACE. but I have that move in my pocket for when I need to. it is very similar to a wikipedia rabbit hole where you start somewhere and end somewhere very different - but if you looked at your browser history you'd see all the pages you clicked to get there.

thats SIFT! you don't have to do each move for every post u see. if you take anything as a habit, start from the top and just STOP for a second before you share or repeat something wild. ask yourself about it a little. this is what i consider the most vital step, and it makes it easier to do the others in time.

we can't know everything. we will sometimes share misinformation by accident. we will sometimes share malicious disinformation by accident too. but I think we owe it to ourselves to try and build these habits, and it makes it a little harder for the people in power to convince us of whatever they want this week. it makes us more skeptical and more informed. these are always relevant skills and they're more and more important every day.

I’m so glad you liked this chapter. I was thinking about you when I was posting btw, wondering how you’d like this one. There are a handful of more batshit crazy chapters coming up and I can’t wait to hear your thoughts.

My drive in a lot of my long form fanfics is to amend or at least tailor aspects of canon to my taste. Quinn was an asshole in canon for sure. A literal murderer. And I think we’ll get a further look at that before his time is through, but what I really wanted was a Fight to subdue him in the first place, a struggle to get him out of Darlin’s life. It felt… too easy. And maybe that’s a red herring in canon, but I figured, my story, I’m making him as horrific as he was talked up to be in canon.

I’m glad you enjoyed the fight scene!! Honestly I have a hard time writing action in the particular prose that I tend to use in narrative stories, so I tend to use them as vehicles for character exploration. I try to stray away from telegraphing each individual blow and more towards creating a particular ~vibe~ to communicate what I wanted to. If I’m not using the fight scene to achieve a secondary, character purpose, then I’m not putting it in there. I don’t know how many of my readers have been involved in a good old fashioned fist fight, but I think this style of writing them is useful to communicate how they can feel. They’re often very fast, only a few seconds, and a flurry of punches and kicks and yells. It hardly ever has the sort of organization and strategizing that we see in fictional fights. Darlin’ doesn’t fight like an action hero. They fight like an animal trying to survive, and I hope that their narrative through the fight communicated that.

And oh yeah, the relationship with Quinn was very very abusive, although they don’t now and maybe never will see it exactly that way. Darlin’ has a hard time seeing themself as a victim, not because of any pride or anything but because they have a hard time accepting that they can be victimized and not the perpetrator, or at least responsible for the abuse they suffer in some way. So Quinn goes from a sadistic abuser to an “asshole who, yeah, hit them sometimes and burned them and cut them and scarred them, but they gave as good as they got and they probably deserved all that anyway, and what unlucky bastard would ever treat them any better than that?” And he’s still got his roots in them. I think, genuinely, that they still love him in a way. They have a big heart, no matter what they try to portray, and they can’t just turn it off.

And YEAH even if their brain can’t process that they’re safe there, the soft animal of their body does know it, in a deep, subconscious way. And their body also knows that David is safe, safer than most people, safer than they are with themself. They’re running on fumes after the fight and when they reach David their body just goes “oh he’s here? Great. ✌️”

Okay look I fully understand that no one wants to believe me here so I'm shouting into the void expecting something to happen and that's ridiculous but I'm going to do it anyway because I still have a few minutes until my conference call starts.

I've been working in Republican politics professionally for ten years. A decade. I'm not talking out of my ass when I say no one is taking Project 2025 seriously. I actually do know that directly. When the Heritage Foundation is mentioned in conversation, people roll their eyes. The thing about think tanks like that is that they don't have to deal with the reality of what they're suggesting. They essentially throw spaghetti at the wall to see what sticks. If something does - then they'll write an actual policy prescription or draft legislation so that lawmakers have something to start working on. I know you probably don't know what the difference is (which I don't mean as a knock on you, it's just not something most people know), but Project 2025 contains none of that. Until the conversations I hear at work start to shift or I see one of those ideas become a policy treatment or draft bill, I'm not going to worry about it. From a practical standpoint, all Project 2025 is today is a Democrat fundraising point.

To your other point, there are roughly 70 million registered Republicans in this country, not counting third party members or conservative leaning independents. Some of them suck. A lot. I'm really not trying to pretend that's not the case. But to write a post claiming that all conservatives are like that is absurd and shows that you don't spend time around us. The very vast majority of conservatives are just normal human beings who go to the grocery store and work boring jobs and take the kids to little league practice and hold extremely boring opinions on politics. Just like the very vast majority of liberals. It would be equally unreasonable of me to go around telling everyone that all Democrats are the equivalent of the Bernie bro who shot up a bunch of Republican members of Congress a few years ago or that they're all the like the people who send me rape threats here or call my old campaign office to say their going to firebomb us. It would be really easy for me to believe that if all I did was spend time around other conservatives and my only interactions with the left were with their raging nutcases. But I spend time around liberals so I know they're not like that any more than we are like that jackass last night.

It is so easy these days to put yourself in a little bubble of people who think like you and only ever see the worst of the people who don't. That used to be difficult for conservatives to do because media was all very left-leaning so even if we didn't personally know a lefty, we still saw them portrayed positively on tv, whereas the left didn't see that of us. With streaming and algorithms and alternate media these days, we are heading in that direction too. Very little scares me more about the future than that.

The only way to fix that is if we all start talking to normal people on the other side the aisle again. That's all I'm trying to get people do to. You don't even have to talk to them about politics. Talk to them about baseball or something, I don't care. Just something so that when you think of the other party, you think of the human beings you know instead of some boogeyman. There are nearly 12,000 people following this blog. That guy last night wasn't one of them - why does he get to represent them? They didn't do anything wrong and they outnumber him, literally almost 12,000 to 1. The only reason anyone listened to him was that he 'confirmed' their bias and they didn't think about it any more than that. They saw one example of what they already believed and let that give them a reason to ignore the mountain of things contradicting them. ANYWAY!! It’s… idk the best way to describe how Kristoph feels about Trucy in the Au. Because imo to say he doesn’t love her is wrong. He… cares in a sense. But saying he genuinely and truly loves her… saying yes isnt right either. So if he thinks their bond gets better, well. He’s at least proud of her— her first case was defending him on the murder of Shadi Smith after Apollo pinned him as the true murderer in Turnabout Trump. She got him a not guilty thanks to a lack of evidence. And there’s something satisfying about her hatred of that young upstart Apollo Justice kid, hearing her complain about how dare that defense attorney claim that Kristoph is the true murderer. Her daddy can’t be a murderer.

Saying Trucy hates Kristoph in the Au is also not entirely true. If you asked if she loves him and if she thinks he loves her, she’d answer yes to both questions without hesitation out loud. But in truth… it’s complicated. He told her there’s no future in being a magician, she shouldn’t waste her time on silly magic tricks. He told her she should be focused on her studies, should be working hard to become a defense attorney at such a young age, she shouldn’t spend so much time goofing off. It hurts, but he’s right, isn’t he? All magic has done was make her lose her old parents. Besides, Kristoph took her in after her other daddy left her. He gave her a nice life, gave her the best education. Surely he cares for her. Surely he loves her.

Overall, to say they love each other isn’t a definite yes, but it’s not a no either. It’s complicated. And admittedly based on my own feelings when it comes to my own parents LMAO

Her relationship with Klavier is pretty great tho!! She loves her Uncle Klav, and Klavier adores her! Whenever he comes to visit, he gives her the most extra gifts, and he loves to show her songs from the Gavinners before they officially release, and she loves to perform magic tricks for him!! He also babysat her a lot when she was younger and she enjoyed it because it meant she didn’t have to study on those nights. I actually have a comic planned out that I started drawing that highlights the type of relationship they have along with their own complicated feelings about Kristoph. Hey i'm the previous anon, and i think you missed some point. İntersectionality is important as you say, but whilst trans women hold the power (or seems like) by the virtue of being born male, transitioning is something that dismisses that power. I think it's somehing that's different from things like, as you said, race. A white woman's white privilege does not goes away by the virtue of her being a woman. But after transition, a trans woman's male privilege goes. For example, a friend of mine is trans. She faces misogyny in her field, and she if she were to go and say them she's trans they would not go "oh, sorry, my mistake!!!". They would probs react with disgust but contunie their misogyny nonetheless. I know this specific thing happens because she passes, but even before she passed, people didn't treat her like a with the respect they would do to a guy at all. Not even with the respect they would treat to a gnc guy.

Btw ik some ppl might see it and think the reverse happens to trans men, but from what i seem, it does not!! From my observations, privilege in regards to gender -and transitioning- is something that can very easily taken away. But isnt given.

I appreciate you outlining that so well! I do think a fully passing trans person wouldn’t be recognized as male and thus not have some of the male privileges in places like work, as you said.

However I guess when I bring up privilege, one of the main things they have privilege in that we don’t is reproductive rights. All female people, even those who can’t get pregnant, are affected by those rights getting taken away (just wait until November when Trump inevitably wins, I guarantee there will be more than just abortion taken away). But since trans women are male, they do not face the same danger as we do in this area. Also not ever having to deal with periods is a privilege in itself, considering the stigma and misinformation surrounding periods and also the struggle many women have to buy products. This is where the male privilege is.

I also wanted to point out that- and not all trans people are like this, I’m aware- many MTFs have expressed that experiencing misogyny is affirming to them and actually makes them feel slightly happy because it’s a sign of passing. While I understand how debilitating dysphoria is and I know that it’s awful to deal with, being able to see a “bright side” of misogyny is a privilege. A male person didn’t have to grow up with misogyny surrounding them, while a female person does. So there is a privilege in being able to feel affirmed by oppression.

But I mean yeah it’s not a simple thing to think about and discuss, like you said. Passing trans people have privileges in some areas but lose them in others. Intersectionality and not living in an echo chamber is important to me so I’m always up for hearing other perspectives (as long as you aren’t an asshole about it).

anyway so it was a whole lot of that for four hours. the europeans wake up. tommy uploads a video on youtube addressing it. shit has escalated. here it is. its five minutes if you wanted to give it a watch. tubbo goes live and responds to dreams stream. he might still be live actually. he is as of me typing this out. on tubbos first stream, he offered to call dream and talk things out. dream did not respond. on this stream, tubbo had set up to call dream. dream bailed halfway through tubbos stream.

now dream is claiming that he is going to make a response video to tommys video.

honestly, dream has been a piece of shit to not only these people when they were children, but also the audience that both supported him or casually watched him. so it is very vindicating watching dream so desperately try to control the narrative and paint himself out into a victim and fail.

and also tommyinnit should be allowed to kill whoever he wants. send post.

kamala was out of time and out of touch from the beginning. she never resonated with working class voters. you want the truth? they dont care about palestine. they dont care about trans rights. they care about the cash in their pockets and if they can pay rent. if one guy makes it clear "I WILL MAKE IT BETTER!!" over and over in simplistic language till its coded in your brain, he'll be seen as better for the economy. the dems are the party of the elite and "educated"(i do not beg to differ but perception might) and the repubs are the party of the average joe. thats how it's perceived and if they dont get off their high horse and fix this economy, theyll lose 2028.

to hop back to a past point, yall did the right thing humiliating joe into resigning. the fact the dems thought they could compromise on that is embarrassing. but the fact they did left kamala to scrap a campaign up in 3 months that can beat a campaign planned over 8 years. yall got outclassed and outbuffled. you will watch palestine burn and women forced and trans folks prevented all because of this. free palestine btw donald will be a monster for letting israel take down the west bank. he will be a monster for forcing nato allies to scrap for equipment to ukraine. and you will watch.
