This is what you wanted, isn't it? For things to get easier? For some godsend to come and save you from the deepening pit of debt and despair?

Is that what S is? Is he really going to save you? And your mother? Can his money do that? Or are you just dragging out the inevitable? Is this also just denial? False hope? What do you call it?

There's some things you can see clearly he isn't lying about. The money. It's already in your account like he said. And his car screams rich. Richer than you could ever hope to be. A rental but not the type they give to someone with nothing in the bank.

You look out at your apartment building. Those second thoughts already have you nervously picking at the edges of your nails. You take a deep breath and look straight to the windshield.

"You okay?" S asks, startling you from your doubt.

"Yeah, yeah, I... I've never lied to my mom before. Not as big as this. I mean yeah, I lied about losing her pearl earrings in grade school but that lasted all of two hours..." You frame your face and sit back in the seat. "I'm rambling. I'm sorry." You drop your arms. "And I've wasted enough of your time."

"Not wasted. Honest," He leans his hand on the steering wheel. "I'm headed to the hotel to eat room service alone." He scoffs and gives a sardonic smile. "Exciting stuff. But uh... it's a nice suite."

"Hah, yeah. Must be weird being away from home," you sniff.

"Not much different. Still empty." He shrugs.

"Uh huh," you hum thoughtfully.

"Well, you can tell your mom you went for an interview? Got something new? That could explain... things as they come up."

You pick at your lip and nod. "Makes sense."

"I could mock stuff up for you. I mean, I have letterhead," he chuckles and rubs his neck. "I'm not a great liar either, sorry."

You chuckle thinly. "It feels... hopeless." You shake your head. "Not you. Just... alright. Gotta face the music." You look at him. "S, thank you. For lunch and being patient with me. Sometimes I feel like a piece of my brain is not there." You exhale and grab the door.

"Uh, wait, before you go," he grabs your other arm then quickly lets go. You sit back and look at him. "I'm gonna be in town for a few days. So, I was hoping tomorrow we could... spend some more time together."

Your lips part. That's a surprise. You just assumed you'd have more time to adjust. To process. Time. It's precious and you don't know how much you truly have.

"Oh, right," you breathe.

"Unless... " he draws out.

"Oh, oh, I... I thought maybe you had to go back. For your business," you say as you wring your hands. Your skin is raw. "I'm so sorry. I wasn't thinking and... you know, I have work but, I guess I'll be calling in."

"Sure, I didn't mean to blindside you. Sometimes I think things and just assume other people know," he clears his throat. "So, I'll pick you up tomorrow morning."

"Yeah," you agree and pull the handle, pushing the door out. "Please, go get some rest. You flew out here, it must've been a long day."

"It's sweet of you to think of me," he says.

"Good night," you smile and stand straight. You shut the door and turn to look up at the dingy apartment building.

You drag your feet forward. Your lips move silently as you rehearse your lies. You purse them and slant your mouth one way than the other.

You almost collide with someone else as they come out of the building. You step out of their way and wait. You glance back. S idles at the curb. You wave before you go inside.

You climb the stairs one at a time. You're wading through molasses. As you get to the apartment door, you hesitate. Stop. Get yourself together. This isn't against her, it's for her. This could save your mom.

You enter and the deja vu makes you feel out of place. Everything is as it should be yet it feels like it's all changed. Your mom is on the couch, reading, her head in her hand, her finger feeling the edge of her scarf. You shut the door gently.

"Hi mom," you say as you put your bag down. You sanitize your hands before you go any further. "How was your day?"

"Good," she sits up. "You were gone a while. I thought it was your day off."

"I'm sorry, I didn't... say." You linger by the entryway. "So, uh, I really didn't want to get my hopes up and... I thought I'd surprise you..." you let the words dangle. You watch her, waiting for her to challenge you. She looks tired. "I went for an interview and er, I got it."

"An interview?" She echoes.

"Yeah. It pays better, so I said yes... and... yeah."

"Another store?"

"Um... admin?" You say.

Her lashes flutter and she smiles. "Wow, that's great, pie. Very good." The book closes in her lap and she brings her hands up to her face. "Can you help me to bed? I'm feeling nauseous."

"Oh, of course, mom."

You near her and offer your arm. She gets up and you help her around the couch. She doesn't even have the energy to doubt you. She has bigger problems. She's staring down that abyss and you're worried about a little white lie. She doesn't need to know, she doesn't need to worry. She just needs to get better.

S arrives at nine. You're outside waiting. You're anxious, not excited. You feel bad enough leaving your mom for work, but this feels wrong. Not just that you're lying to her, but about what.

You get in the car as he smiles at you. "Good morning, I brought coffee," he announces proudly.

You look at the paper cups. You smile back. It feels strangely normal. This is what you see on TV. Real couples do this. This isn't real.

"Thanks, that's so nice," you say. You buckle in and peer around. You feel like you're being watched. Like one of the neighbours will tattle on you. "H--How was your night?"

"Not too bad. Watched a movie. Fell asleep before it ended," he snorts as he pulls away from the curb. "Old man hours."

"Ah," you nod. "I just read a bit. Checked on the butterflies."

"They getting close?" He asks.

"Yeah. Should be soon I think."

"Hm. Nice. You eat yet?" He asks.

"I had some toast." You answer.

"Cool. I hope you don't mind a bit of a road trip? I found this place in the next town. Has good reviews."

"Oh, it's totally up to you but... I don't want to be too much," you scratch your neck.

"This is the deal, right? Spending time together. So don't worry about being too much. Just try to enjoy yourself," he girds.

"Right, yes, I just... guess it's been a while since I did anything for fun. God, that sounds lame, doesn't it?" You ask.

"Lame or it means you've been working hard." He says.

"I guess so," you agree.

He drives on and you stare through the window. It's better that you leave town. It's not like you're well-known but you don't need to chance anyone seeing you with him. Out-of-towners always tend to inspire gossip. Mom doesn't go out much but...

Your mind won't stop. You try to calm it as the minutes tick by. Your worries are replaced by curiosity. Where exactly is he taking you?

Before you can assume the worst, you recognise the large stone behind the town sign. You haven't been around this way in years. He steers past the green park and through town square.

As he pulls in at the vaguely familiar yellow brick building, you can't help but pinch yourself. How could he know? Maybe just a lucky guess. You went to the conservatory once as a child. You realised later how expensive that birthday trip was.

"Here we are," S says. "I know it's nothing fancy."

"It's... it's great," you say. "I love this place."

"You've been here?"

"Not in ages but once," you answer.

"Ah, I should've figured."

He grabs his phone and wallet as the engine quiets. He gets out and slides them into his back pockets. You undo your belt and climb out as he comes around the car.

We waves you ahead of him toward the arched front doors. He pulls one open and lets you through first. He approaches the desk and takes out his phone. He has them scan his passes and puts it away again.

He turns to you and offers his hand. You stare for a moment before you accept. His skin is warm.

He takes you through the entryway to the first wing. Here they have all the antiquated inventions; funky looking glasses with stacked lenses and scientific tools you couldn't guess at the purpose of. You stop to read the placards as S leans in to admire the objects.

"Probably not your favourite part," he says.

"I don't mind. I like old things."

"Ah, me too. Maybe one day... well, who knows, I might take you to the museum in New York... but... who knows," he shrugs.

"Maybe," you say. You don't know about all that. That's a long way away.

You continue on around the winding exhibits and into the room with the live exhibits. Insects of all kinds. You let go of S and stop to watch the bees in the hive with a tunnel to the outside world. There's a little sign explaining that the conservatory houses the hive as a protective effort.

"They have a new part to it," S says. "I saw it on the website. Down that way."

"Oh," you back up. "Sure, whatever you want to do."

He leads you on. You admire the windows that look onto colonies and tunnels of different insects. You stop short at the next door. 'Butterfly Room.' You look at S. The last time you came, you remember there was one tiny little exhibit of unhatched chrysalis.

You rush through ahead of him in excitement. A blue flutter brushes over your forehead and another flap of yellow sweeps by. You spin as the lazy wings beat around you, others still as butterflies rest on petals or branches. It's a menagerie. A garden full of colours.

You turn and look all around. You're breathless and amazed. In that moment, there's nothing else but the beauty of those creatures.

You smile and tilt your head up. A monarch lands on your nose and you freeze. S laughs and you look over at him as he aims his phone at you. The butterfly flees.

He turns the screen to show you the picture. You blush and rock bashfully. "That's cute."

"It is," he agrees."

"S," you gasp, "this is amazing."

"It is." He looks around and lowers his phone. "It's nice to have someone to enjoy it with."

"It is," you cheep. You turn and follow the path of a white flutter.

You go to the bench and sit. It's bittersweet. It's nice to not be alone, but you wish it was your mom here with you. She's all you have but with her being sick, it only sinks in then, how lonely you've really been. She's there but not really. She's fighting a battle you can't understand.

S sits beside you. He's quiet. You blink away a glaze of tears.

"It's really beautiful," you say. "Thank you so much. I can't... I can't even begin to tell you how much..." You sniff. "How much I appreciate this."

"You don't have to say it," he assures you.

"But I should. There's so much I never say. So much to say. So much I might never have the chance..." you lower your head. "I'm really trying. I don't want to be sad. I don't want to ruin this day." You exhale. "You didn't pay to watch me mope."

"I did. I paid to be close to you. To be with you," he shifts closer. "And whatever that means, is fine with me." He puts his hand on yours, like the day before. It doesn't feel as strange anymore. "I don't want you to think about that. The money. I want you to have a nice day. With me."

You nod and gulp. You breathe out the emotion and look at him.

"Why?" You croak.

He stares at you. His cheek dimples. "I got lucky. I took a chance... and I met you."

He squeezes your hand and you look down. His hand wraps easily around yours. It makes you feel safe. It's been so long since you felt anything close to that.

Legal Anon checking in. Fia asked that I give a short reminder about what may be at stake, from a legal perspective. The theme of Round Two has been "good faith effort". Had I been on Antonia's side, I could have argued that Luke and Nicola undermined Antonia being seen as Luke's girlfriend and therefore she was unable to get the promised publicity. Had the nose- scratching pap pictures happened prior to renegotiations, one could argue that it's internet culture not Lukola but, alas, prior to that Antonia had several examples of accounts and content that may be considered bullying on her side. In my opinion this last push, from Lukola's side, is about Lukola proving they are not the problem. They are doing everything in their power this time around to make sure they don't give the wrong impression so that she doesn't have another attempt at renegotiation.

Why go to all of this trouble? I would assume that Antonia has information that could be damaging to both Luke and Nicola's careers. Whilst one may look at the PR moves as being ill conceived, I see a selfless partnership of necessary evils. Luke is doing what he has been doing from the start to protect Nicola, and vice versa and I believe that both have suffered for the other in different ways. Luke has had to put some career moves on hold to withstand the backlash whilst he's let Nicola shine and now Nicola is letting her moment take a back seat for Luke so they can get this done. All of this is my opinion, naturally, but Lukola is a microcosm of how I've seen other legal negotiations unfold. No one really wins, it's all a compromise.

As I've also mentioned, I do not believe contract stipulations would revolve around metrics outside of Luke's control such as how many people follow Antonia, how many people believe she is the girlfriend or how much work she gets from it. There could have been a specific item about Luke getting her x amount of jobs but I would have avoided that as a negotiation point since Luke is not an employer. In all likelihood there a set number of appearances and promised social media activity that was agreed upon, like a predetermined checklist.

To wrap this up, again, my firm opinion is that this is about good faith effort and about them demonstrating that to the best of their ability. If that means Nicola appearing with another man and removing her ring, Luke sacrificing a Lukola event and giving her a photo spread of relationship coded pictures and blocking people who would contradict the narrative, that's what they will do. It's a means to an end and they are hoping that fans will be forgiving on the back end, once this has all been put to rest.

TY, Legal! Obviously you put it more eloquently than I, but this isn't about us, it's about them and protecting each other & their family. The less personally shippers take this, the better. (Easier said than done).

Lukola didn't expect us not to notice their love and we're not being punished for doing so... seems that they are doing what they have to do and asking for forgiveness later. So let's give them grace, as it seems to have become more messy than they may have thought it would be...

despite however rushed the wedding feels, i think it fits pangi's character to an extent. like, imagine being someone who takes it upon himself to keep one of the people he finds most dear to him safe from danger and then subsequently finding out that you spent weeks without any of your memories, slowly growing more aggressive towards that very person. that fucks with you a little bit!

so i wouldn't put it past pangi to want to make sure something like this doesn't happen again, however illogical it may sound. he already sticks to lukey's side as much as he can, binding them through means as permanent as marriage can't be that absurd (although, it really is). that's the only reason why, and there's no reason to seek any deeper into it, because sure, everyone has been insinuating something deeper between the two since they had met, and while he knows and lukey knows that is not the case, if it gets people to stop bothering him about "addressing his feelings," that's just a plus.

so, ultimately, pangi doesn't mind an impromptu marriage proposal, anything to keep from actually acknowledging that maybe there is something going on in his relationship with lukey that should be addressed (which there isn't!!!). because pangi would sooner take his own life than actually communicate over something like this, and the problem is that lukey is the same.

lukey is self aware and he recognizes, to an extent, that what he and pangi have is different from all the other friendships he shares. but pangi also was the first one between the two of them to draw a hard boundary on not wanting to be anything more than friends all those months ago, so why would lukey insist on digging any deeper. for all the good communication that the two participate in, this is the one line that they don't cross, perhaps because they both foolishly and naively think that the conversation they shared months ago covered all their bases.

unfortunately, i'm not entirely sure what it'll take for them to finally land on the same page of what they want in their relationship with one another. they're content keeping it undefined, but i doubt a proposal from pangi would delight lukey when lukey knows there is much the two need to address between them, and honestly i hope he does end up doing something about it, even if that means rejecting the proposal to give pangi a bit of a wake up call that he can't keep burying his own feelings into the ground to keep from confronting them.

And the one that's really been getting me because holy fucking shit is the argument that "DickRoy is better because Roy is an actual person in it."

You know, I considered arguing that, actually, there's a lot of great fanfiction out there that doesn't minimize Roy and that the sanitization of his character is largely due to the batfanon black hole that everyone acknowledges most of the time but for some reason with JayRoy it's like a whole separate thing and not a by-product of popular tropes that are generally Bat-centric with everyone else as their accessories.

And by the nature of typing that paragraph I have, in a way, made that argument, but I've also somewhat changed my mind on how I want to really discuss this because I think there's a larger issue at hand here:

Fictional characters aren't people, you cannot erase their personhood because they don't have any.

A lot of people are mad that JayRoys are willing to engage with and discuss Roy's addiction in an interrogative and compassionate way. They're not going to phrase it like that though. Because if they did phrase it like that it would betray the fact that they would rather ignore that part of Roy's character entirely except perhaps for brief little one-off references

You know, like how Dick Grayson only brings it up every now and then to throw that fact in Roy's face as an insult every time he's feeling pissy, especially when Roy is telling him something honestly kind of fucking true that he doesn't want to hear.

Frankly... I don't actually think I care if most of the shippers did or do erase Roy's "personhood." If I don't like their content I won't engage with it. There are plenty of ships, plenty fo fandoms, where this same phenomena happens all the time. Especially because we are talking about FANfiction.

AMATEUR fiction which is often clumsy and raw and inexperienced, that doesn't know how to realistically step back and have extensive focus or reference to more than one characters' struggles at a time. Even the worst fanfiction is a learning experience for the writer. Over time they might get better, or they might not. It doesn't matter. All that matters is t hat they enjoy themselves, and that other people sometimes enjoy it too!

We're all just out here doing our best, and trying to have a good time. We're not out here to make award-winning fiction, we're here to make the blorbos kiss, because they're not people, they're imaginary dolls and we can do whatever we want with them because it's not for you, we're not appealing to a broader market.

It's just for fun, and I think when you start arguing about character personhood, you're taking it too seriously.

Would I, personally, prefer to engage with depictions that display a degree of understanding of canon and respect for the characterization that's been laid out over decades? Yeah, I won't lie. I like that more. But, what I consider that to mean and what YOU consider that to mean and what THEY consider that to mean are all very different perspectives and interpretations.

There are sooooo many comics. And it's not a fucking crime to not read all of them and remember that in Bleebus Bongo Adventures Volume 4 Issue #516 Beefgus said he doesn't like Lemon Cake when you write your bakery AU and have Beefgus pick Lemon Cake off the menu and claim it's the best one they've ever had and that because they've had so much good Lemon Cake and have a lot of opinions about it in their life it's a real compliment.

There's nothing wrong with changing around character dynamics and relationships for an AU. And, technically, by nature, most fanfiction is already an AU, because it's not canon. And, maybe if they're trying to argue it's canon compliant then maybe it's a little more like "I don't think you and I read the same canon" but I don't really see that tagged a lot on SHIPFIC unless it IS a canon ship which obviously JR isn't lol.

They're just... Look if other people are playing with dolls in ways you don't like then I'm not sorry. That's their prerogative. Stop being so dramatic, you look like a child throwing a tantrum.

hi i have a question if you don't mind. i started reading dc comics in the past couple of years and i love talia and i'm going through her backlog. i just finished cass's batgirl run, and i'm super intrigued by her. my question is how do you think their friendship (if they ever even have one) be like? i haven't gotten to any comics where they interact, but i want them to be really good friends because of their story paralleling. (both of them being the favorite child of a batman villain. being raised by a single father. both of them being some of the worst men alive, but absolutely loving their daughters. their daughters being trained in various skills since childhood. using batman as hope to get away from the life they were living, but cass being the only one to actually get away. much to think about (unless i got something wrong then forget this lol))

Really great ask, thank you! Cass and Talia are my two fave Bat related characters, so I have a lot of thoughts as to how they would get on haha.

I think their main point of connection would be Cass's love of projecting on people. Like you said: here is a woman raised by a single father, who's morals do not align with hers but who loves her, who may not love her in the healthiest way but it's all she knows, and here comes Batman who she attaches herself to as a symbol of freedom from the burden she feels her father pushed onto her, and then despite finding freedom through the Bat they eventually have to push beyond him, and then quickly get derailed through being brainwashed into evil. Cass knows exactly what that feels like, only she got to recover from her brainwashing, while Talia got the worst ending possible. On Cass's side now, there would definitely be a desire not only to connect, but to help.

There would however also be hesitation and fear, and I think on both sides it stems from Talia basically being a bad end for Cass, and that's something they can both see. What I mean by "bad end" is the story of Talia and Damian, where Talia had a child, gave up that child so that they could live a normal life, but that child did not end up free and instead got trapped by the very family Talia initially sought to escape. And then ultimately Damian is killed by a brainwashed Talia. One of Cass's biggest fears is that she is forever tainted by David Cain and the bond they share, and looking at how the story of Talia and Damian played out she would find that incredibly disheartening for her own future. Likewise Talia would see and relate to Cass, but would in current canon probably view herself as doomed in a way Cass isn't, and so would be hesitant to reach out in case of potentially dragging Cass down.

Then there is of course the fear of what they've done to each other. Talia isn't her father but she was around when he gave David Cain the resources to make Cass into a weapon, and likewise Cass was brainwashed when she did it, but she WAS the one to kill Talia's sister. But then again Nyssa was also the one who brainwashed Talia so ??? Complexity there on all sides. They'd both have a lot of conflicting feelings about this and be hesitant to share them in case the other feels vastly different about the whole thing, and their guilt gains an additional layer.

If I was to write them bonding, I think Nyssa would actually be the key to this. Cass now knows thanks to Shiva that Nyssa is alive again, and would track Talia down to let her know. Talia might then finally confess what Nyssa has done to her, because if there's one person you can trust to keep that secret it would be Cass. The empathy would be too strong.

And so, while Talia is perfectly content not running the League and letting Nyssa handle that, there's no way she'd feel safe out there with her sister around. Cue a Cass and Talia road trip to track down Nyssa and capture her before she gets the chance to hurt Talia or Damian. Lots of bonding over their fathers and families and their complicated feelings towards Bruce, lots of discussion of their different understandings of the world based on their own trauma, lots of fights and fun times because they deserve it. (Also mild retconning of Nyssa's backstory where she hates Ra's for understandable in character reasons and not because Ra's was working with the fucking Nazis please and thank you.)

In the end they confront Nyssa. And Cass has been seeing Talia struggle with the decision of what actually to DO with Nyssa the entire road trip, and has been sharing her own experiences with a similar scenario but not overstepping and demanding Talia do x or y. So she watches as Talia holds a knife to Nyssa's neck and just... can't go through with it.

Nyssa escapes dramatically, probably with an explosion or assassins or something. Cass and Talia also survive and in the aftermath Talia shares her fears that she wasn't sure if it was remnants of conditioning that stayed her hand or just her own morals. Cass again sympathizes, and promises that from what she's seen it probably wasn't the brainwashing, just Talia being a kind, loving person. She's not doomed to be the image her father and sister shaped her in, she can be her own person. And so they go their separate ways with a promise to be there if the other needs it, and a friendship is born.

(Afterwards Talia gets her own series where she goes back to doing corporate espionage and Cass is her main Bat connection because she needs to be free of both Bruce and Damian for a solid few years.)

I really love I found this gem of a post because it means I can hijack OPs post with my weird niche hyperfixation which is HOW minecraft stories are presented to us and how they're told!

Lifesteal stood, and honestly stands, out for this reason. It plays so heavily into meta and it isn't even a conscious decision. You mention how Vitalasys video ends, but also I think another very good example is how Branzy and Pangi meeting up was very important lore wise because it meant that the IRL Dragon egg could be set up! There's also things like chat impacting Zams actions throughout his journey on lifesteal so much, making choices like who go have a conversation with first leading to a massive butterfly effect.

You mentioned the Dream SMP very shortly very important peice of context for modern day SMP content will always be the Dream SMP, where you could see examples of "Things out of peoples hands" with the accident with Hannah and her elytra (I'm not sure how many people remember, but she won a Elytra in a event for the server and not very long after she was blown up and the Elytra was blown up along with her. It lead to her 'wings' being ripped off and was very intresting). The Dream SMP opened the floodgates for this Live, more theatrical Mindcraft storytelling and role-playing.

The biggest difference between DSMP and Lifesteal is that Lifesteal still, isn't really a roleplay server. There is for sure storytelling! Very good storytelling! however it's VERY meta and the storytelling actually relies on that meta aspect to work, and the main focus isn't the story itself. It's how it can be made into content. Thats why Bacon is doing what he is right now and that's why the mace is limited to one for this season.

It's so important to watch streams when it comes to lifesteal because you'll never get the entire story. Roshambos video where he pretended to be Wemmbu for a week as a example, was a example of a lifestealer being a very VERY unreliable narrator. Another one, which I can go into more, is Ashswag. In season 4 during the wormhole, he shows Reddoons his powers. In the video, he makes himself seem like this big, intimidating guy who is very powerful. However you watch the stream, and you see him give Reddoons 60 Totems, say he'd never kill Reddoons, he actually very clearly values Reddoons as a friend on the server. But you'd miss that entirely if you just watched his YouTube videos.

Them being almost caricatures of themselves in lifesteal is so very important to understanding what you're consuming from it. You need to understand that they're all very hungry to twist things to their own benefit to make things intresting for themselves and content! Even the exploits are so meta, because you watch people's videos and you see how things are delayed because of school, how things go wrong because of circumstance not up to the players, and so much more.

Lifesteal is very unique, and for me that's where it's appeal is. Sorry if I got off track, I feel like I lost my point a lot and definetly went longer than I wanted. I don't think I made much sense in the end but I might one day explain it better when it isn't word vomit.

It really is just- Lifesteal does the whole meta/out of character/cc vs c!, thing different than anyone else. What really shocked me initially when getting into ls was how often they talked about “content”. About doing stuff purely for the video, how “so and so ruined the ending of my video”. And I don’t say that as a bad thing, just coming from the streaming-based dsmp, lore based empires smp, short video series traffic, and prison escape/debunks, it was a complete shock.

Nobody talks about it, as much as them. Maybe post-dsmp people talk about bts more, and sure Scarlet Pearl from double life wouldn’t have happened if Pearl wasn’t forced to record at 5am her time, but noone else talks about it so openly.

It’s like- early on, I watched Vitalizys s4 stuff, and, he fully ends that one video with the conclusion being him irl talking to the viewer. No more c!Vitalizy trying to save the server, just Vitalizy being affected by the sever. And that was it, that was the conclusion to his lore-based Minecraft video ! Thats crazy ! And now we have the other half of purple duo doing things that can only be fully explained by ooc motivations. There’s no way to talk about the Warden arc without acknowledging that Subz wasn’t acting in character for like any of that.

I don’t have much of a conclusion to this, it’s just something that’s been rumbling around my head since I first started watching streams. You literally can’t talk about like Abyss without acknowledging it was about inactivy on the server that they’re all playing on, that they’re content creators playing on. You can’t talk about PB and J and Bfb without talking about server equitte which is also an ooc thing. Idk, even the exploits even the whole Youtube narrative vs what actually happened on stream. It’s impossible to talk about lifesteal in this rigid box of canon vs not. It’s all canon, or nothing is, or it just doesn’t matter.

There's something about what's going on with the Triangle that makes me think people treat Buck as a Love Interest and not a MC because of the way the show frames him sometimes.

Like he was Abby's LI in season 1 - yes, he had development (a lot of it, but it was largely focused on her - he still credits her for his choice to change).

In season 2, they give him a sister (whose own storyline mainly focused on Doug and Chimney, they barely talk about Maddie crashing into his life after 3 years of silence and only focus on the sibling relationship when Doug attacks). Meanwhile Bucks out there bringing Carla to Eddie, attending Santa visits and boosting Eddie the entire time... Hes a little like Eddie's potential love interest.

This continues in S3 when he should be focusing on himself to get better and heal and address those abandonment issues he has and yet, it's all about Eddie feeling betrayed that his friend of barely a year couldn't talk to him for a couple of weeks. Like he didn't need Buck before the lawsuit yet somehow it was a big deal during and after... He apologized a billion times, Eddie never apologized.

And now with Tommy. People act like Bucks the one in the wrong when Tommy led him on. He never planned to be more than casual. He deliberately didn't try to get close to him, held him at a distance because he knew he was going to break up with him.

Like Buddies and Bucktommies both treat Buck as a LI. Like his bisexuality supported Eddie's coming out or Tommy get a family again with the 118.

And I think, despite having his own storylines and being an MC, the show kind of treats him that way too. Want drama? Give it to Buck, but don't spend too long dealing with it.

I mean, his first long term adult GF ghosts him, his sister comes back but even at Christmas only wants Chim and not her brother, he helps out the single dad but then he's expected to put C&E first even though he got his leg crushed, had a PE and then forced to babysit leading him to almost die in tsunami... All he wants is to not be left behind and be treated differently and everyone continues to prove he's all alone (Red showed that). Like wow.

Anyway, as an actual fan of Buck,.it really sucks that I get into the show and realize he's a LI to shippers. A prop whose feelings don't actually matter to them. It's sad.

I think Buck as a whole is very much a people pleaser. He gets happiness from making sure the people around him are happy and content even if that's at his own expense, which sucks. I feel your frustration for sure, and you bring up a lot of good points. I think what makes it sting even more is that Buck consistently gives so much of himself to others—Abby, Maddie, Eddie, and now Tommy—but rarely gets that same depth of emotional investment back from the narrative. The show gives him big emotional beats, but then kind of skips over the aftermath or redirects it to support someone else's development.

The Tommy situation is another example. People keep focusing on Buck’s feelings as if they’re a complication rather than valid. He was vulnerable, and yet he’s the one getting flak for wanting more while Tommy was always planning to walk away and never fully committed himself to Buck. He thought Buck wasn't ready and made the decision for him.

You're right—it does feel like he’s often treated as a narrative tool to serve other arcs. Even when something huge happens to him, like the tsunami or the coma, the fallout isn’t really about him. It’s about how others respond or grow from it.

Buck is a main character with his own arc, trauma, and growth, but sometimes it does feel like the narrative and fandom both frame him more like a Love Interest than a fully fleshed-out protagonist.

so recently, i made a post discussing the phenomena of DC x DP and DC x MLB crossovers and why they exist and part of that post was discussing how largely speaking, at least half, if not more of the Batfamily fandom doesn't read the comics. if they interact with canon DC material, it's adaptations that are their own sequestered universes and oftentimes not remotely comic accurate or seeking to be. the most obvious example is the Young Justice cartoon. i'm adding a cut to this post because it just got so long i'm so sorry.

a lot of times, when people are discussing the "why" of this oversaturation of fanon-only fandom, they blame Wayne Family Adventures. and i think, to a point, i agree WFA is responsible for a boom in this fandom. but as someone who's been in the fandom long before we had WFA, to me it's the other way around. WFA was DC's way of meeting the demand for this easy-to-get-into, easy-to-consume content about the Batfamily that predicates itself on the comics just enough to be vaguely the same characters, but has a more sitcom, slice-of-life sort of vibe so DC could profit off of this section of the fanbase that otherwise wasn't consuming its primary material. and well, it's definitely worked. not only that, but i have a weird theory that the decline in the MCU also led to the rise in the Batfamily fandom. when you consider the fan content that made the MCU popular within fandom, it's that 2012 "they all live in Avengers Tower and Thor is eating poptarts and Clint is in the vents and there are movie nights every Friday" sort of vibe. those were the fics that were a hallmark of the fandom. and as the MCU has strayed from well... quality content in general, but specifically well-thought-out crossover content where characters can have their own arcs but also exist in a wider story where they clearly care about each other, that fandom was sort of homeless. so where do you go, if you like a superhero found family where you can have villains for angst but also stick them all in one big family-like home for silly crack and have a plethora of options for gay ships? well. you go to the Batfamily. if you write a crack/fluff Batfamily genfic with silly vibes and low stakes instead of say, a fic about a very specific comic issue even if it's a popular comic, you're *going* to get more traction for the former. because the fanbase largely just isn't reading the comics.

and i feel... complicated about this. because on one hand, Don't Like Don't Read has been a tenet of my fandom experience. i'm very pro-fandom and that includes fandom content i don't like. and to an extent, i do think this sort of should apply to Batfamily fanon. i enjoy having my moments with other comic purists, giggling over exceptionally painful OOC headcanons or even facepalming in pain over some content but it is on me to not interact with that content. you don't make fandom a better place by being hostile to fans who engage with canon in ways you don't approve of. and frankly? we as comic readers are not going to get non-comic fans to read the comics by being asshats to them. no one is going to want to pick up any comic if we get a superiority complex about it. and also, i feel like we're all lying to ourselves a little bit insisting comics are so, so easy to get into. they're not. we can just all agree, they're really not. i've been single-handedly helping my sister get into comics, specifically Wonder Woman and no matter how simple i make it, i watch her get frustrated trying to understand what pre-Crisis and post-Crisis and New-52 and Flashpoint and all these things mean and what a retcon vs a reboot is and what a Crisis Event is and what the hell Diana's current backstory even *is*. sure, you can give someone a beginner list of comics to start with and slowly dip their toes in the water but sooner or later, *something* is going to confuse them. comics as a medium straight up aren't going to be everyone's cup of tea. and if someone *just* wants to read silly fluffy fanfiction about the Batfamily, i can't entirely begrudge them for not wanting to take the hours and hours out of their day to understand this medium. it's not an accessible medium to get into. "read this and this, but this run is out of print and this run wasn't collected in trades at all but also make sure you read that event in order and this is a good comic but the backstory in it is retconned and you *have* to read this it's so important but it's also really bad because the author kind of sucks" sounds. ridiculous for someone who like. just wants to read some stuff about Nightwing. sometimes, we all make reading comics sort of sound like a chore, not a hobby.

so my point is, i do extend some grace to Batfamily fanon for existing. i think my biggest gripe is, as i said in my other post, misuse of tags (if you're not creating content about comics, maybe you don't need the comics fandom tag on Ao3, just the all media types umbrella tag) and my far bigger gripe: when panels are taken out of context to support fanon only headcanons. if i could impart *anything* onto the Batfamily fandom as a comic fan it'd be this: if you haven't *read* the comic, don't spread the panel. if you don't even know what comic it's *from*, don't spread the panel. it's fine to use comic panels to discuss your headcanons, but so often i see someone spreading a comic panel from a comic they haven't read, and when asked where it's from, they can't source it. a silly example that comes to mind is a post going around, taking a panel where Dick, in his internal monologue goes "here comes the sun. do do do do." and the post is claiming it's from him getting buried alive. when that panel comes from Nightwing (1996) #140, and he gets buried alive in Nightwing (1996) #127, two completely different moments frankensteined together. if you're going to not read the comics, that's completely fine, but unless you're sure of the source and the context, panels shouldn't be spread around. i'm sick of this specifically happening to Red Robin (2009), with ppl claiming Tim has totally killed people because he blew up some of Ra's' bases, when those panels within context, make it clear he gave everyone time to escape. and in a later arc in that very comic, Tim grapples with the idea of murdering Captain Boomerang, and *specifically chooses not to*, because he doesn't agree with murder, even against the person who has hurt him the most. if you'd like to write fanfiction where Tim is pro-murder and has done some sketch things, i'm totally on board and would probably like to read it. but there's no need to pretend it's canon from a few panels you saw out of context.

beyond that, i think it's not *entirely* correct to say that fanon is harmless. whenever i see very WFA-positive posts, they often default to the argument that WFA is fun and silly, and comic fans are killjoys for not liking it. which. i think is complicated because the issue is, WFA and fanon don't exist in a vacuum. if you like WFA power to you, i don't think it's the worst thing ever, but i do think it's degrading to these characters because honestly? they feel incompetent in the webtoon. it's one thing if WFA was solely a slice-of-life sort of deal, just having silly episodes where Bruce is taking on a PTA mom or they're all fighting for the last cookie. but when WFA attempts to take on more serious plots with these characters, it *fundamentally* falls flat in understanding them. i get it, Bruce comforting Jason having a panic attack because a noise reminded him of the crowbar felt cute in a microcosm, but i'm so serious when i say that storyline destroyed how like. half of this fandom understands Jason Todd's relationship to his trauma. it doesn't understand how he reacts when he's triggered, what coping mechanisms he seeks out, and how he would handle Bruce comforting him. even if i can believe for a brief moment Jason *would* be triggered by something like that, him running and trying to hide and then getting a hug from Bruce to make it okay is just. painful. WFA needs everything to be wrapped up in a nice, neat little bow. so even when it starts to tackle interesting concepts, it makes them fall flat with its need to be soft, low stakes, hurt/comfort. there was a two-parter episode that dealt with the complicated mutual hatred/jealousy between Tim and Damian that *almost* really interested me because for once, it felt like the webtoon wanted to explore canon messy dynamics. but of course, it had to be fixed with one conversation and a hug. you don't mend the *years* of issues these characters have like that. WFA isn't in character because these characters are hyperbole cartoonified versions of themselves to fit within the medium and be a cute happy family.

because that right there, is the crux of it. the Batfamily fanon seeks to simplify the Batfamily and force them into a nuclear family. there are so many fantastic posts on here discussing how the nuclear family-ification of the Batfam is eroding decades worth of complex histories so i won't go too far into that. but what i will say is that there's this need, in the Batfamily fandom, for the Batfamily to exist as a unit. they are a *family*. (honestly i think calling it the Batfamily is a misnomer and has been for years but we're in too deep now.) they exist to each other first, and any teams or friends they have come secondary to this family unit. you can *specifically* see this demonstrated in what headcanons are becoming popular these days. i have an entire lengthy meta in my drafts about how i *loathe* the "the Batfamily meets the Justice League" genre of fanfic because it makes no *sense*. in order to have this genre of fic exist, you must operate under the assumption that no one in the League, or adjacent to the League, knows the Batfamily exists and are thus utterly shocked to discover Batman has kids. and to make *that* work, you have to strip *every single Batfamily member* of such important dynamics and friendships so you can lock them all in Gotham for their whole lives. Dick can't have the Titans, Tim can't have Young Justice, Duke & Cass can't have the Outsiders, Jason can't have the Outlaws, Damian can't have the Supersons, Babs can't have the Birds of Prey, and so on. because if they had these relationships, they would be known to the League. the Batfamily fandom doesn't care about this, it's just "silly fanfiction", it's not trying to be serious. but how can you say you like Dick Grayson as a character if you don't understand the Titans *are* his family? at some points of his life, moreso than the Batfamily even is. it is constantly repeated to us in most comics with Dick how much the Titans mean to him. he *needs* them to be who he is. the same extends to every other Batfamily member, most of which have been full League members at this point. but in fanon, that doesn't matter. the Batfamily are a sequestered unit first, and all of those side relationships are secondary and easy to toss away, if it makes your fanfic work better.

and because they have to be a unit first, you have these forced relationships that dump years of actual canon material for the sake of making them get along. the Batfamily fandom has its favorites and well. it's no secret it's usually the boys. Jason and Tim by *far* stand out as fandom faves so, their dynamic is a heavily explored one. it does matter that in canon they don't tend to get along and especially don't see each other as family. what matters is that you can push dynamics onto them. and so fanon gets all twisted up about which Robin Tim actually idolized as a kid (Dick) and what member of the Batfamily is pro-murder but still an older sibling figure to him and looks out for him (Helena, or if you want the dynamic of once tried to harm Tim but they've reconciled, Jean-Paul) in favor of who's the most popular. Dick, Jason, Tim, and Damian are always going to be the standouts for popularity, but it's specifically Jason and Tim who are getting fanonized the most. and that's because really, we don't have much canon content of Tim that *isn't* the comics. for Dick you've got Young Justice (tv), for Damian you've got the DCAMU, for Jason you've sort of got the Under The Red Hood movie, but Tim sort of lingers in this limbo. (yes, he's in Young Justce (tv) and Titans (live action) but in neither is he the main character nor given much depth) so, he gets a *lot* projected onto him and has become fanonized. and even with Jason's animated movies, you don't see him interact with Tim, so people build it from the ground up how they want to see it, disregarding of canon comics. i think it's what makes him so popular in the first place- he's malleable into whatever you want or need him to be.

and of course, the fanon ignores other characters in the Batfamily it doesn't know about. i feel like you could create a tier list of Batfamily characters by their popularity, going from the fandom main characters: Tim, Jason, Bruce, Alfred, Dick, Damian. to the underrated: Steph, Duke, Babs, Cass. to the forgotten about unless they're convenient for a story: Kate, the Foxes, Helena Wayne, Carrie, Selina, Harper Row, Maps, Minhkhoa Khan. to the absolutely unknown: Helena Bertinelli, Jean-Paul Valley, Onyx Adams, the Clovers, Julia Pennyworth. it's not lost on me that the ignored characters tend to be women and people of color. which is both a canon and fanon problem, DC will continue adding interesting characters to the Batfamily, play with them for a few years, then drop them to default to the "Batboys" again. and it's a vicious cycle of the fandom only caring about the "Batboys", and thus people entering the fandom via fanon osmosis won't have content about the other characters, therefore, they won't be interested in those characters enough to create it, and it's just this ouroboros consuming itself, no matter how much canon content we have of these other characters. and it's ridiculous just how large the Batfamily is becoming because of this, which is why i'm a pre-Flashpoint fan, because then the Batfamily was contained enough to actually feel like a family with every character having nuances relationships with each other, but i digress because those thoughts could be their own post.

and the thing about fanon is it doesn't exist in a vacuum. DC has started turning the comics to accommodate for what fans are asking for, because fans will beg and beg for content they're not going to consume. Tim Drake: Robin had Tim as a coffee drinker because that's the fanon accepted headcanon. and the resolution of the recent Gotham War arc was for Bruce to buy this new manor for everyone to move in and call him. nevermind that most of these characters have their own homes and have zero reason to be moving in with Bruce. Tim had his marina in Tim Drake: Robin, Dick has Bludhaven, Cass and Steph have their little side of town in Batgirls (2022), and so on. these characters are being forced together as a unit, as one big happy family living together, to appease what non-comic fans want and it's damaging comic relationships. Robin: Knight Terrors saw Jason and Tim team up and working together, which i've seen varying opinions on but i personally despised. their interactions made zero sense for any of their canon history, but it appeases them being this close sibling relationship that fanon acts like they are. also the fears they faced in their respective knight terrors didn't make sense for either character and *only* worked as a moment of bringing them together so they could reassure each other and have this weird dreamscape bonding moment. the canon is bending itself to the will of fanon rather than building on the pre-existing complex relationships. Tim barely even gets along with his most important team in Dark Crisis: Young Justice because it seems the only important relationships the Batfamily can have is with each other. and when we do see them outside of the Batfamily, it only seems to be to relive the glory days like with World's Finest: Teen Titans, instead of developing them as they currently exist. this isn't recent in the comics, it feels like you can trace it back to the New-52, but it does feel a *lot* worse over the recent years. WFA is fine when it exists in its own bubble, but the simple truth is, DC content never exists on its own. the adaptations will reflect back onto the comics. (the damage the Young Justice cartoon has done to some characters should honestly be studied) and so it does frustrate me a bit when fanon-only or adaptation-only fans act like we're being nothing but killjoys for being frustrated with this. since they don't read the comics, they don't see how the comics are suffering as a result of this.

people argue about what's out of character for the comics they don't even read. i'm sorry, but "bad dad Bruce" is consistently canon. that man is just kind of shitty. when you take someone who has the drive he has, who has this need for the Mission first, who needs a teenager in spandex next to him to keep him off the ledge, that guy is sort of going to be a shitty father figure. he just is. not on purpose or with malice, but when you compare him to any other dad in a big DC family, he sure takes the cake. it's why characters like Oliver Queen tend to *really* fucking hate Bruce for how he treats his kids.
