have you ever known someone that you didn't particularly like, but something in you tells you that maybe, if things had gone way differently, you could've been really good friends? and you don't really enjoy their company and you don't really make any effort to get to know them. because you don't particularly care for them. you aren't in the same circles and you don't seem to have any of the same interests. but sometimes there's a teeny tiny moment, a glimpse into another universe, where you really think it could've worked out? it could just be a smile or your eyes catching each other, or hearing them talk. you notice a small detail that intrigues you. but you don't really know what to say to them, how to start a conversation that won't immediately devolve into awkward silence. so you don't. it's not really a big deal. but sometimes you still find yourself remembering them, or rather, the idea of them and you wonder.

Hi this was originally gonna have art but maybe I'll rb this with it later I unno I do not have Time to draw it and still finish this before eep time anyways normal foreword HI I don't know where this came from I went into a fugue state and just kinda started typing on google docs. this is mostly shuichi and kokichi thoughts with an infodump disguised as exposition. uh. Warning for Oumasai but only if you wanna see it that way I unno they're complicated rn

Sea salt on his tongue. Blinding sun in his eyes. Sand under his feet that burned him like coals in a fire. Today was long but he wouldn't have spent it any differently. After everything they had been through, they deserved a summer to have fun and heal from everything that had happened.

His mind still felt fuzzy around the edges but after a few weeks, he had become a master at the basics of who he was.

His name was Shuichi, his name felt good and Right on his tongue. He knows who his friends are and who his family is, and with every passing day, he remembers who He is a little more.

That said, it still frustrated him to no end every time he saw something and could feel himself remembering but he wasn't remembering. His mind would call him back to something he didn't have access to. He wasn't alone in this, they could be talking about anything at all but one small thing and a blank look would slowly creep across his friend´s face. He swore if you looked close enough you could see the static in their eyes. Hear the buzz of memories failing to tune in correctly.

They learned to live around it but that didn't mean they accepted it. Dozens of family photos and mementos from their childhood had been brought with them on their summer rehab trip to help with reconnecting the dots.

When outside of their daily allotted “Memory Rehab Time” they spent most of their time goofing off. Usami had tasked them with using a friendship bracelet system to rebuild their connections with each other. For every friendship successfully reconnected, they would both receive a friendship bracelet, with Mister Nagito and Aunt Nanami helping them tie the bracelets together.

He enjoyed the routine. He would wake up, go for a walk around the island, and meet his friends at the Hotel Mirai restaurant for breakfast. They’d all spend some time working on recovery for an hour or two then were set loose on building bonds and making memories. Halfway through the day they would all meet up for lunch and chat about how their days were going.

Today’s lunch was slowly wrapping itself to a close, he had been talking to Kaede about some songs he wanted to learn on the piano (He knew how to play!) and she had been giving him advice when she was eventually pulled away by Miu who had ‘Important Hot Girl Shit’ to do with Kaede.

So here he was, cleaning up the sandwich he had been eating and wondering what to do next. He had been hanging out with Maki earlier, both talking about some memories that had resurfaced from their childhood, but the dark haired assassin was currently nowhere to be found. As he looked around, Shuichi eventually realized he was the last person left. This wasn't a problem really, he’d spent many an afternoon on his own and was going to spend this one working on a book he had found when who else but Shuichi’s self proclaimed “Life-Long Rival” came strolling into the room.

“Well well well, Mister Sherlock, all on his lonesome” Kokichi announced to no one, looking around as if the room were filled to the brim with people.

“Hey, Kokichi,” Shuichi replied, tossing his trash into the nearest can. “Why so late, I thought you loved lunch?” he added, turning to give the smaller boy his full attention.

“What can I say, I got a little caught up briefing my minions for our all out attack on the island, we strike in 5 days” he says, tossing a hand up nonchalantly.

“But since you’re ever so lonely, you know what that means!”

Shuichi gulps.

“You’re all mine Shumai”

And with his plans decided for him, Shuichi was quickly dragged out of the restaurant.

The sweet taste of ice cream, the loud noise of the Titty Typhoon, the cool ocean breeze on his now bare back, the calming lullaby of the ocean waves, the crunch of –

“LOOK ALIVE SUSHI-CHI!”

Violently ripped from his thoughts, Shuichi turned just too late to meet a water balloon directly to the face.

“What the- WHAT WAS THAT FOR???”

“You looked asleep!! I was helping!”

With a huff, Shuichi made his way over to the bench Kokichi was resting on. He WOULD retaliate but Kokichi just so happened to be wearing Shuichi’s jacket, leaving him safe (for now)

Once he sat down, a silence settled between them. Their day had been pretty hectic, with Kokichi taking him all over the islands to ‘Jog his memory’, but Shuichi was 99% sure he just wanted to goof off. All things considered, he’d gotten pretty fast after moving to a cane over crutches (not as fast as when he was in a wheelchair tho, he convinced Miu to add rocket boosters for the price of letting her ride too, and they never knew peace after that)

It was still kind of weird, all things considering. He didn’t realize just how much he knew about Kokichi until he was in the moment and suddenly talking about something dumb they did in the 4th grade. Kokichi always seemed a bit lighter whenever Shuichi correctly remembered what he was talking about, like a weight had been taken off his chest after an eternity of carrying it. Despite that, Shuichi couldn't help but feel like something was still bothering him.

“The sunset’s not bad,” Kokichi said, almost whispering. There was a fragility at the edge of his voice, threatening to crack and break everything.

“Definitely not the best sunset I’ve seen, but this will do for now, I suppose” Kokichi quickly added, a veil of confidence hastily thrown atop his voice.

“Uh, Kokichi-”

“I would prefer to spend this with my organization of evil, but you’ve made an ok minion for today”

“Kokichi.”

“The poison I put in your sandwich earlier definitely makes you an easy target thou-”

“KOKICHI.”

“UGH WHAT SHOE-ICKY?”

“Can we talk?”

“We were talking”

“You know what I mean”

“What is there to talk about”

“I just. I just wanted to apologize.”

“I- wait what?”

“I’m sorry for the way that I treated you. I understand that it was a ‘high stress situation’ and all, but I still hurt you and I just…”

“…”

“I don’t think I could live with myself if that was really one of the last things I ever said to you”

“…thanks, Shuichi. Really.”

Kokichi began to scoot away, but Shuichi shot up to stop him. They both stood there. Neither wanting to make the next move. The tension was almost stifling. Just as things reached their peak, Kokichi slowly moved forward and wrapped Shuichi in a hug.

Shuichi is a pretty honest guy. With that fact in mind, he definitely didn’t feel any tears on his back, and when they both sat back down on the bench, he remained perfectly composed the whole time.

And when he woke up later to find himself inside the small pillowfort him and their friends had built at the Hinata’s, he definitely did NOT wrap his arms around Kokichi.

so i found a really old au idea i had but went absolutly nowhere with, in fact it went so nowhere the only proof of it's existence was the sentence "talent swap but make it freaky friday"

i'm pretty sure the intent behind this concept was either the whole v3 cast or just saiouma getting into a situation where their talents got swapped and they had to get use to having a wildly different talent while trying to get them swapped back.

depending on your preference i think this au could work both as a hpa au where Miu's inventions are the source of the problem, and as a ingame au where the swapping is a motive of sorts.

either way i think it'd just fun to think about Saiouma adapting to having each other's talents. it could probably get pretty angsty if you wanted too, with one or both looking at the other and convincing themselves the other is better at utilizing his talent better than himself. idk how well it'd work with Kokichi doubting his ability to use his own talent, but if you hc him to have impostor syndrome like i do it might be easier

Omg yessss!!! I’ve been looking through your asks and the Shumai thing is so real. The thing that makes me like that nickname as much as I do is specifically because it was created for the sole reason of pissing off Kaito. Without that context, the nickname just loses a lot of its flavor.

Anyway, I’m about to start reading Love Letter and I’m very excited! I live for anytime Tsumugi and Shuichi so much as look at each other. There’s so many fun ways you can play with their dynamic so I can’t wait to actually see what you do. Not to mention your immaculate saiou writing skills and the way you make your stories just go insane. It’s very entertaining and I adore it!

Me: you ever read a crackfic one-shot and realize you'd want to read a serious longfic with the same premise? cause now I am thinking of this stupid.. pregnant Miu shows up to saiou's apartament, asking Kokichi for help but instead of going with the crap about her not realizing she's pregnant for this long, I would like it to be angst inspired by her lhs

Me: basically, Miu ghosts everyone for a few months, not that unusual, she can disappear in her projects, she pops back up to brag about the prize she got for it when she's done, but not this time, this time she shows up to saiou's apartment, severely pregnant and devastated turns out she jumped headfirst into a relationship with some guy, tried to go through with her baby-trapping idea from LHS, because, hello abandonment issues, and for a bit it looks like she's exactly where she wants to be, but then, only weeks before she's due the guy ditches, leaves some note about realizing he's too young to be a father, and he's gone also, I'd add https://archiveofourown.org/series/976308 friend group to the mix, so while Ouma is the first person she comes to, the whole gang unites to help her

Clown: The friend group coming together instead of another potential partner is clenches fist so good. Miu is someone who is pretty fixated on relationships, it's almost as though in her mind she won't really be completely until someone loves her that way. So to give her a chance to move past that in this situation is just so interesting AND ITS JUST SO GOOD! In my mind for her to come to ouma of all people. Because he provided some familiarity to her, some safe space where she can in her own way step back into her usual. And Ouma would low-key go "shit. I'd jump shit too" and shuichi sends him a look but doesn't dare say anything because he kinda agrees. And it's a complete wreck but it's good

[replying to Ves] oh, absolutely Tsumugi is part of the problem, always making something but. there is always somebody who wants to carry the baby never left out of sight

Me: I think after Miu cries herself to sleep Kokichi texts their group chat using their emergency code (sacred, extempt from lies) to get Rantaro & Mugi to come over the next morning so they can tackle it together because in reality, he's a little overwhelmed too, and in the moment doesn't know yet if Shuichi will adjust to this with him so they all eat breakfast together, reassure Miu that they'll be there for her no matter what, start making a plan, a shopping list, beginning of a schedule, then Kokichi has to take the first scary step of the plan - talk to Shuichi about it; but Shuichi is like: yeah, of course because how could he expect his boyfriend not to help out? this is literally why he loves him, of course he will go a little overboard when it's for his found family he knew he had to prepare himself for Something when he saw Miu crying on his couch, at least it doesn't involve committing crimes against whoever hurt her, for now.

Clown: It's a big step!! (And very sudden) Even if it'll be a shared responsibility It's an entire new person! One that ouma is already in his mind accepted he'll be there for. He wouldn't immeadiately expect Shuichi to agree to something like that on a whim, but to know Shuichi is willing to look for solutions, to stay and work through it with him without question because of course. Sobs. Yeah. They've GROWN!!! Planning would be hellish though. Oumas filling the table with hundreds of scribbled papers and everything. Clown: YEEEAHHH. Honestly having a lot of people helping her out, some who give out reassurance easier than others, is a good start. But she is in that place where she's looking for something else to latch on. Usually that's the kid. I feel like had she gone through this alone she'd be one of those mothers constantly flipping through "You ruined my life" and "your the only thing in my life that loves me unconditionally" towards her kid. Ouma definitely helps in the way that he doesn't sugarcoat a thing.

Apollo: Poor Shuichi wakes up to Kokichi sitting up in the middle of the night because he's stressing over if he's cool or not and Shuichi has to remind him that the kid isn't even a year old yet and thus, has no idea what cool even means

Me: once the kid is a bit older they let Rantaro and Gonta organize a camping trip for them and their friends, Kokichi is crying when letting them go because he's a motherhen and his baby is growing up and not scared to sleep away from home and him because the bugs will kill them

Clown: Miu and Kokichi giving their all to be divorcecore so true Everyone has ideas of the outrageous affair that ended their marriage that never happened

Me: imagine someone on the staff is homophobic so one of those days when it's Shuichi's turn, he gets told that his gay agenda is the reason the kid has to live in a broken family he's so confused the asshole is dealt with, but the anecdote lives forever also, I think Kokichi is the parent that always takes the chance to help out at school when they ask for a volunteer to join the trip or some event at school idk, if it's an universal thing, but here it's common practice that when little kiddos go on trips around town one or two of the class moms are asked to join after the first time the teacher is like "does anyone other than mr. Ouma wants to join? [sweat smile emoji]" but he persists he's just a little to prepared for anything to happen and kids feed into that energy and it becomes entirely beyond the teacher's control

Clown: OUMA BECOMES A PTA MOM AKSHJDHD The children are the next in line to be a part of his criminal organization so he needs to see them regularly, duh

santiago is probably the only one here very willing to do so, and even he has anxiety, because these are all characters who are in some way or another worried about public perception. chrysos for his part doesn't want what he has with santiago to possibly be taken away from him, so while he gladly accepts santiago's affection in public, he doesn't reciprocate unless they're in private.

and i think azul and davis would also keep it lowkey. i mean it would be OBVIOUS but davis is a bit shy when it comes to romance and ... okay azul can be dramatic af so i respect that but he also is a student at a school so he probably keeps it subtle most of the time.

basically both pairings would probably be more affectionate when there's no eyes on them lol

chrysos is flustered and very insistently telling a tipsy santiago to keep it down bc santiago wont stop going on about how PRETTY his boyfriend is and how SKILLED and AMAZING and HARDWORKING he is and how much he likes him. eventually chrysos just resigns himself to listening to the adorable babbling and also getting a lot of kisses all over the face, but if anyone looks at them weird they're getting a death glare

santiago probably didn't realize how physically clingy chrysos could be until the mer finally started to get tipsy after a surprisingly large amount of shots--now he has one very pouty boyfriend who can be found either latching around his waist from behind in a tight hug, or holding onto his arm and leaning his head on his shoulder, or intertwining their fingers , at any given moment. not that santiago minds, since physical affection is also his love language~ he'll just humor drunk chrysos

when davis gets tipsy, his inhibitions are GONE, so he can shamelessly say the things he wants to azul--why do you think he got the nickname the walking mouth? he's good with his words... or should be lol. azul has to deal with being flirted with, and it's actually good flirting despite davis' awful alcohol tolerance, so i think azul might just have to suffer all night until davis finally falls asleep LMAOO (on the bright side, davis will be so embarrassed when he's sober and azul will have so much dirt on him)

i think like chrysos, azul would also be a bit of a clingy drunk bc -gestures at the whole being an octopus and having tentacles thing and also both of them being naturally possessive- but compared to chrysos, azul is way more... i imagine he'd be saying the sweetest genuine things ever in direct contrast to his smug businessman facade haha? and so davis has to pretend he doesn't feel his face going red as his mer bf leans on him or drapes his arms around his shoulders ......

Working on a danganronpa x fear street au because I'm bored and I got nothing else to do, so here's a short character list for this AU! I'll be starting off with Fear Street Part 1: 1994, Part 2: 1987 & Part 3: 1666 will come at a later point.

I really recommend watching Fear Street, it's a good movie trilogy! With that, onto the list!

Heather Watkins – Sayaka Maizono

Reason I chose her is because she's the first girl you meet in game and the first girl who dies. Heather's the same way.

Ryan Torres – Leon Kuwata

I chose Leon because of both he and Ryan have some girl catcher thing going on, not to mention they both become killers. (albeit one was possessed, the other was forced)

Deena Johnson – Shuichi Saihara

In reality because the Fear Street Trilogy also counts as a LGBTQ+ film (Deena & Sam used to date), you could put anyone besides Shuichi as the main character. Reason I chose Shuichi was because Deena associates with the color blue, and she's also pessimistic and depressed at the start of the movie until the end.

Samantha Fraser – Kokichi Oma

Now, Sam and Kokichi are very different characters. One's manipulative and childish while the other doesn't like to cause trouble while being quiet. The only reason I chose Kokichi is due to a couple things, one of them being Sam living in Sunnyvale (which is a rich and safe town, and since Kokichi is the Ultimate Supreme Leader, I just put two and two together.) Second, Saiouma is a popular ship and since Shuichi is Deena in this AU, I might as well make Sam Kokichi. (But other options such as Kiibo or Kaito or any other male character Shuichi's shipped with could work too.)

Josh Johnson – Yasuhiro Hagakure

In the movie, Josh is the nerd who's all about conspiracy theories, and he's smart because he's able to piece together what's been going on with Shadyside and the killers it pumps out every decade or so. Yasuhiro's all about that conspiracy stuff, and he's somewhat of a nerd (alongside Hifumi), hence why he's Josh. His best friends that he talks to like Josh does in the movie with AOL would probably be Hifumi and Gundham.

Kate Schmidt – Miu Iruma

Kate's not an inventor, I'll give you that. But in the movie she's very smart and has a good sense of what she's doing (even after she dies). She's also a very attractive girl, so who else could fit her other than the genius with good looks and golden brains herself?

Simon Kalivoda – Kazuichi Soda

In my personal opinion, I could've chosen Mikan for Simon due to both of them being cowards and having knowledge of over the counter medicine and drugs, but it just didn't feel right given Mikan also cries a lot... which is something Simon doesn't do. So I chose Kazuichi because I thought it would be more fitting in terms of personality. (Also, both of them are simps in a way)

Sheriff Nick Goode – Nagito Komaeda

While it doesn't make much sense for Nagito to be Nick, I chose Nagito because both of them wield guns (/hj) and because both of them live a lavish lifestyle where nothing bad ever happens to them. (With some exception as an Ultimate Lucky Student aka Nagito) Then again, he could also work for Sarah Fier given both of them had one hand cut off from their body...

C. Berman – Hajime Hinata

It's implied in 1978 that C. Berman and Nick Goode had a thing for each other when they were kids, and C. Berman was very pessimistic (almost like Deena) during most of the movie. It fits very well for Hajime just like Shuichi does with Deena.

Ruby Lane – Sonia Nevermind

Halfway in the movie, Simon ends up entranced by Ruby Lane's singing which is how he ends up getting tackled and almost killed by her. I don't like to doubt that Sonia would do something similar to draw out Kazuichi if she ever decided to kill someone.

Sarah Fier – Kiyotaka Ishimaru

While it may not make sense for Ishimaru to be the witch, It's the only character I could think that would work for this AU since, and there are spoilers so don't read if you haven't seen Fear Street, Sarah Fier in the movie is a lesbian who was hung for witchcraft and had rejected a dude who loved her when she loved another woman.

Saiouma Week 2023 Day 4: Pregame / Postgame

It’s almost familiar, like a scene coming out of a romantic movie: Where the two main characters who are supposed to be love interests accidentally touch hands, look at each other, and then out of nowhere love at first sight miraculously happens.

At least that's how it supposedly goes. Until Shuichi broke the flowery atmosphere by staring daggers and opening his mouth because as an avid fan like himself, ain't no way in hell will he let the other person have the only Danganronpa cereal left.

OR: shuichi and a purple-haired stranger wearing a gakuran fight over the last danganronpa cereal on the cereal aisle.

YOU'RE SO RIGHT THOUGH Komahina truly is such a good ship and I feel like it's the one implied most in canon. The way they compliment each other, they remind me of a yin and yang. If you have the time for it I'd definitely love to hear your Saiouma thoughts too because Saiouma is definitely one of my favorite ships (I analyzed their characters way too hard and just fell for them)

Something I actually like about saiouma is kinda the opposite of Komahina, and that’s the lack of in-game subtext. I don’t just mean that in terms of romantic subtext, but also just who Ouma is as a character, since you get absolutely no concrete backstory for him, and don’t even know if you can trust the small tidbit you do get with DICE, and because of this he can kinda be whatever you want him to be. He is purposefully shrouded in mystery because the theme of the game is truth vs fiction, and I think his character was meant to exemplify that theme by being unknowable. I’ve seen the claim that Kokichi is just a knockoff Nagito but I don’t think that’s fair because I think he’s very purposefully the way he is.

That being said, I personally buy into the hc that he is anxious and has trust issues, which is why he constantly avoids the truth and acts out the way he does in game (Weeby News has a really good ouma analysis on YouTube I would highly recommend if you haven’t seen it)

This hc is sort of the hinge of why I love Saiouma, because this puts them in a position of understanding each other, both fearing the power of truth, albeit for different reasons. This along with what in-game context you do get from FTEs is what drives it for me. All of the other characters write off Kokichi as a trouble maker, bad news, purely antagonistic, but if you do all his FTEs then that makes Shuichi the only one to extend the courtesy of trying to get to know him.

That being said, unlike Komaeda, Ouma does NOT care to submit to the terrifying ordeal of being known- at first. He is having fun with Saihara, he’s definitely a little gay boy for Saihara, but he’s not revealing anything; of course Shuichi sees Kokichi as an enigma, or even a puzzle to solve, which is why he keeps coming back. However, over the course of all FTEs and his Salmon-mode ending, Shuichi comes to appreciate Ouma for who he is- lies and all- and agrees to meet Kokichi in his level, literally hand in hand.

Again we come back to the idea that this ship is very mailable, as is seen by the plethora or pre, post, and in-game art and fics. There are AUs left and right because there is just so much room for adaptation: people can pick and choose exactly what they want Saiouma to be to an incredible degree. Of course my preferred dynamic is always going to be the A+ banter that you get with the introvert/extrovert, and because they’re both anxious and insecure in their own ways, I think this enables some very cute content.

I’m the end I do tend to latch on to what existing canon content there is cuz that’s just how my brain works; they compliment and contrast each other because they both understand the gravity of truth and lies, and I think they end up understanding each others different ways of using them. I think there’s a lot of room for growth for both of them, and I think they’re both in a position to empower and uplift the other on their character arcs.

I do think the game could have done a better job of giving subtext that they might genuinely care for each other (much the way Komahina does) but I do understand the reasoning behind leaving it more open to interpretation. Either way I greatly appreciate the levels of creativity that come from saiouma shippers, and I will always be a sucker for phantom thief AUs 😅

“What are you doooing?” Kokichi dragged out his syllables, much like a bored child.

“Uh- no, what are you doing?” You countered, to his expectancy. He put on an innocent expression as if he didn’t know what you were talking about despite the evidence being, well, his positioning.

“Whatever do you mean?” He tilted his head in mock confusion.

With your features softening as you sighed in defeat, you unintentionally let the true emotion of your stress seep through your frown.

Despite yourself truly wanting to lash out and to just, directly tell him what you wanted; you knew it wouldn't be fair to him to do so. “... Kokichi, please. I’m trying to study.” An evident pout creased into his soft cheeks at your dismissive reply, a high whine threatening to erupt from his throat — easily overlapped by a suggestive remark.

“I know something else you could study~” He wouldn't get off until you had given him your full unadulterated attention, that much was clear when he started getting alarmingly comfortable in your lap. From the way he slipped his arms around your waist and tangled your legs with his, you concluded he... Probably wasn't going to leave for a long while.

You stayed silent in thought, reading into his behaviour as your dagger-like eyes daggers bore into his unrelenting purple eyes.

"Did you have another bad dream? Or did you just want my attention?" A tiny infuriating smile grew on your face, smugness written all over your tired features.

It was a fair assumption; Kokichi had been getting night terrors, waking up in cold sweat — as you, in turn, woke up the next day to the small gremlin snuggled up to you, fast asleep.

It was a cute sight to see.

Kokichi didn't know you knew about his nightmares, but who was he kidding? You knew everything.

Kokichi's face melted into an expression of temporary shock, before flushing an embarrassing shade of pink. He had been expecting you to push him off, tell him you were busy, and he would, in turn, tell you no and force you to pay attention to him.

But that didn't happen.

"... Whaaat? Me? Want your meaningless attention? Yeah, right! I was just trying to distract you from your never-ending workload, you know." No, why did you say that, you numbskull? Now they won't-

A small, sweet peck thankfully stole him from his thoughts, though not thankfully brought a harsher, warmer shade of red onto his face.

"Eh?" Kokichi flushed, much to his dismay. He hadn't intended to show his emotions; as he was afraid it would only stress you out more knowing that he really did want your attention — but it seemed that he had been more vulnerable with you than he initially desired.

"It's okay, just... come here." That isn't what he wanted you to say.

Or, more accurately, he didn't know that was what he wanted at the time.

"... You're so boring." He murmured as he decided to give in, anyway, laying down on your torso for your sake, not his; is what he'd tell himself.

You laughed at his childish brooding, rumbles of your amusement resonating out of your chest and travelling to his. "Okay." You grinned as you rubbed your hands on the small of his back comfortingly, unknowingly causing him shivers to travel up his spine.

saiouma phantom thief + soulmate au where you can temporarily see the prints of wherever your soulmate touches once you turn the age of 18.

when saihara’s 18th birthday comes up, all his friends are excited for him. the chances may be slim, but there’s still the possibility that his soulmate even goes to their school! wouldn’t that be something?

unfortunately, no such thing seems to be the case as a few days pass by and saihara has yet to see any prints of his soulmate’s. undeterred by this, though, his more hopeful friends assure him that he’ll find his soulmate eventually.

about a week after his birthday, a museum is reportedly robbed by none other than the infamous phantom thief. saihara’s uncle ends up being called to the crime scene to investigate, and brings his nephew along as well.

you can imagine saihara’s confusion when he sees that the crime scene is littered with dimly glowing footsteps, already starting to fade. the signature sign of a soulmate’s touch.

he tries to chalk it up to maybe it being one of the other examiners or forensics on the scene? but that wouldn’t make any sense, because they’re all way too old for him . . . and the footsteps are pretty small for any of the ones closer to his age. not to mention they’re already starting to fade, meaning they’ve been here a while . . . but it’s 9 in the morning, so that would mean the footsteps would have to have been made at least a couple of hours ago. who would’ve been here near the dead of night?

he ends up filing it to the back of his mind, because his uncle is starting to notice his distraction, and for some reason he can’t really explain, he feels as though this discovery might be something that’s best to keep to himself for now.

a day passes by, and true to the phantom thief’s M.O., a letter is sent to the police station. their pattern has always followed the same M.O.:

first, a robbery is committed; the tricky part is trying to figure out the location, because it never seems to stick to one type of place—sometimes it’s a regular old jewelry store and the next time it’s a high-end established business company that delves in tech, etc.

next, the following day after the robbery, a letter is sent by with an encrypted message (they’ve only ever managed to solve 1 out of the 7 coded letters sent, the 1 being solved by detective prodigy kirigiri kyoko).

then, the letter is always accompanied by some random object; this part at least sticks to a slightly more understandable pattern, because it’s almost always some object that one would associate with a kid—ex. one time they received a rubber duck, the next time it was a lone crayon, and the time after that was a plushie in the form of a horse.

and lastly, the most crucial part of it all that differentiates the phantom thief from so many previous masterminds of criminology: the object that was stolen is always sent back, and if it isn’t sent to the police station, it’s returned directly back into where it came from, as though it was never taken in the first place— doesn’t matter how guarded the crime scene may be, because somehow, no one ever sees anything (but why? and how?)

a few days pass by again, and saihara—really, he didn’t mean to, it just kinda happened—manages to actually decipher the encryption on accident. the letter reveals the location of the next place to be robbed.

he reports to his uncle that he’s accidentally solved the letter, only leaving out one important detail: the letter was covered in glowing fingerprints that only saihara could see. the theory of the phantom thief being his soulmate is so impossible, and yet, the only explanation for those prints to be on the letter would require that to be true:

the letter and objects are always sealed in an envelope, inside a package. the prints were on both the inside and outside of the box, and all over the letter and objects, which no one else could have touched directly.

all evidence is sealed into plastic bags and are never touched without the usage of gloves to avoid tainting of a crime scene or clues.

even the mail service wouldn’t have been able to touch the inside of a sealed shut package and an unopened envelope.

so naturally, just to prove that he’s just being unreasonable and that his theory is definitely not possible, saihara decides to test it.

protection units are assigned to the next targeted location, and saihara goes with his uncle to check up on the scene and once and for all debunk his theory.

it’s a gallery most known for its exhibition dedicated to a famous photographer prodigy, but saihara has never really been one for that type of art, so he can’t recall the name of them.

when his uncle isn’t looking, saihara quickly takes the opportunity to put his plan into motion. he doesn’t know where exactly the thief will strike, nor what will they take, so he opts for the entrance to one of the larger exhibitions that’s more open and bare. impossible to miss or not pass through.

then, as best as he can without really being able to tell, saihara traces his finger along the wall to write out a single question:

can you see this?

it’s a long shot, because saihara doesn’t know if his soulmate’s even 18 yet, or if the letter was even telling the truth at all and this location was just a red herring. but it’s all he’s got. and if the phantom thief truly is his soulmate, and all the circumstances are right, then they should see it, right?

saihara hopes he’s wrong.

he is not wrong, he finds out the next day, when he returns to the newly created crime scene and finds—much to his absolute internal shock—a response written in the form of glowing prints:

duh, of course i can! i have eyes, y’know?

and just when saihara thinks things can’t possibly get any more complicated, another letter is sent to the station—same M.O. and all. except this time, there’s one thing very different about this one.

on the back of the letter, in fading, glowing writing, another address is written. with it, a note.

what a coincidence that we’re tied together! life’s funny like that, so i’ll give you a freebie just this once, my detective. but if you’re gonna be my soulmate, you’ve gotta be able to keep up with me, okay? so after this, no more freebies. you wanna catch me, right? then you’ve got to work for that!

                 Five stars at most. Increased number of stars for how memorable it is, how recognizable it is, and overall length and quality of the fanfiction. Originality was especially important when I rated these fics. Don't see your favorite SaiOuma fic here? It's probably because I didn't find it original. In addition, the way the fic ended was also very important to me. Depending on how much effect it had on me, it might have taken a star down.

                 Ratings are not based on placement on the list. The list is numbered purely so that it's more convenient for when I want to count how many there are. (Although I will note that the reason the first four are all 5 stars is because they were the best ones I thought of off the top of my head.)

                I rate these fics as SaiOuma fics, not as fics in general. That means that if the SaiOuma isn’t really important, but it just happens to make the fic cuter, then it’s on the list but it’s not 4 stars.

                 Don't be discouraged by any 1 star ratings. Those fics are still wonderful. Trust me, my tastes aren't garbage.

                 There aren't a lot of smut fics here. Most of, if not all the smut fics here are fics that are either Porn with Feelings or Porn with Plot. (I was hesitant to include smut fics at all, but goddamn, "Shuichi's Love Hotel" by ReturnToZero was just too damn good not to.) If you came here for smut fics (maybe you’re horny rn idk) then this isn’t the right place to look.

                 I didn’t add any of the summaries to these fics. This big block of text would only get bigger if I did that. I also didn’t add any links because I’m lazy. (I might add links later, though.)

 B I A S E S :

                 I don't like Sumb and Oumoron very much. Any fics that have Sumb and/or Oumoron are probably going to have lower ratings by default.

                 I'm always hesitant to read pregame fics. This is usually because the fic has something to do with violence, unhealthy obsessions, and toxic relationships. Because of this, my impression and overall opinion of the fic is bound to be tainted. (The only exception is “Sweetheart” by Hyacinthium, apparently.)

               I'm a sucker for Hanahaki fics. There's a lot of them here. I know it totally contradicts my earlier statement about originality, but I just love Hanahaki fics way too much. Please take Hanahaki fic ratings with a grain of salt.

                 I probably (read: most definitely) avoided some fics that have the Major Character Death tag. I've tried to steel myself in order to read the fics where Kokichi dies (because it's always Kokichi), but I still end up avoiding most of them. I could be missing out on some S-tier fics here, so make sure to tell me if I am.

                 I (probably, most likely) did not include any fics that were cross-posted on Wattpad, because I didn't bother to read the ones that said "cross-posted on Wattpad" in the summary. I don't like Wattpad fics, and I was only justified further when one of the cross-posted fics I was reading opened with the words "Shuichi's POV:". If there are any SaiOuma fics from Wattpad that are good, please tell me.

                 I, uhh, usually rate my fics based on how emotional they make me. I'm not the type to cry while reading, or even when watching a movie, so if a fic makes me cry, it is a goddamn good fic. Which means, if it's angsty enough (Kokichi dies probably, idk) then it made me cry. Therefore, 5 stars.

                If you don't trust my ratings at all, you should really just go check them out yourself. Really, they're all good.

saiouma post game AU inspired by Taylor Swift music

a thread I started on twitter in March (2021) when I was listening to half of the evermore album ( and a bit of folklore) on loop

ironically, it starts with "closure", from Ouma's perspective who thinks that Saihara reaching out to him now is unnecessary and performatory only to solidify Saihara's good guy look in media's eyes, not out of care and that he only wants closure from him

the idea that Saihara just wants to tie loose ends, be told what he didn't understand and probably apologize for some things that are meaningless to Ouma as long as they ended the game anyway is repulsing to him, so he shuts him out, bc he doesn't want that sense of finality

next up is "gold rush", it's really loud about v3 cast everywhere he looks, but all the credit for HIS plan goes to Saihara and partially to Momota, while he gets the rep of "Komaeda type character" with "you tried" sticker and "are you insane?" looks pointed at him

Saihara totally hates the attention, but Ouma doesn't know that since they DON'T communicate at all, so he's really bitter about how much Saihara is loved, just collecting what Ouma worked for. On one hand, he predicted that Saihara would have to finish the game in his place

he left all those leads for him, because he knew he wouldn't be there for the final, and it's fine, Saihara carried it out the way he wanted him to, so why is he mad? and well, in this song there are so many lines that just... h

"I don't like that anyone would die to feel your touch Everybody wants you Everybody wonders what it would be like to love you Walk past, quick brush" bitch, you're jealous and distance yourself because you want to pretend you don't care

"Eyes like sinking ships On waters so inviting I almost jump in" hate to break it to you Ouma, but it doesn't sound like you don't like the gold eyes after all, I meant rush, gold rush Like "jump in"?! hold your horses, take him to a date first, dude

"I see me padding across your wooden floors" Literally fantasizing about living with him, I told you to hold your horses. "My mind turns your life into folklore I can't dare to dream about you anymore" Wait, not like that-

So for him the moment he realizes he's into Saihara he immediately assumes that it'll never be, and he has a lot of anger at Team DR, at all the fans, at himself for being attracted to someone rn (while there are other things he should focus on),

and at Saihara for (what he only assumed is) an attempt to smooth over the problematic persona of Kokichi to get a good ending for the public view. So the *totally* reasonable thing for him to do next is to give Saihara HELL, obviously.

And so the next song is " 'tis the damn season" and I am so vibing with that one, y'all don't understand, it's like, soft violence, the longing, the "we can call it even", I am foaming at the mouth, this one gives me so many scenarios

"There’s an ache in you, put there by the ache in me" aka it's angst time, the pain when, ugh, when you're an idiot hurting your own feelings and messing with your crush's head, because you can't stop yourself from either flirting with him or pushing him away the very next second

(and this is where I said I am gonna take a break and then didn't come back to this until today)

okay, so I can't stress this enough - my post-game Kokichi continues to hide behind his in-game persona and dials it up whenever there's even a chance of publicity. I'd like him to quote "It's obvious that wanting me dead has really brought you two together" to Harukawa but really, he died for those people, he might do something like that in an interview for show, but the attitude from mad woman is directed at TDR and fans... for the most part. He acts like a spoiled celebrity and he's always having a scandal, whether it be getting into physical fights with fans or reporters, or saying something offensive or throwing a fit and trashing a place (like a hotel room or a store) because he got upset, being caught drunk or smoking, making crude comments about other participants of the game when asked at the events they're forced to attend because of their contracts (he won't answer anything if they get to him any other day tho) so in his " 'tis the damn season" era a lot of rumors is born

A lot of them centered around him and Shuichi, most of them having a bit of truth to them. There is something developing between them because deep down it's what both of them really want, but Kokichi is still playing with Saihara's feelings, making it a game of cat and mouse, pulling him along, being the one to seek him out, flirt, but also always the first to backpedal and leave him alone in a rush

but eventually it starts to get through to him that Saihara actually cares and that it's hurting him, so we enter with champagne problems when he realizes Saihara is being genuine with him and the "dropped your hand while dancing" is literal because it's one of the official parties, organized by one of the many anti-danganronpa organizations that ask Saihara to give speeches on their events like this one, and they're waltzing, having a quiet conversation, Ouma's tease backfiring on him and he runs away just like that

Cue him holing up god knows where to mope for weeks, agonizing over worst case scenarios, playing it over and over in his head, certain that he hurt Saihara with his playing and pushed their relationship beyond saving and that's when the last great american dynasty starts playing, because he uses that time to finally sort through his pre-game stuff too, and it turns out they were almost-not-really together back then too, so he blew it thrice and they won't be getting any more fresh starts therefore "Who knows if I never showed up what could've been. There goes the loudest woman this town has ever seen. I had a marvelous time ruining everything :)" bc he read his diary and thinks it's his fault Saihara joined danganronpa (it isn't)

and there's no way to incorporate my tears ricochet smoothly with its literal message but I think about "I didn't have it in myself to go with grace" a lot and if you re-frame it from Momota killing him directly to their whole group scapegoating him and pushing him in the direction of becoming the villain they wanted him to be just to wonder why he doesn't come to group therapy and tell the press they have no idea why he's being hostile with them now that it's all over. It'd be simpler if they still hated him like they were always supposed, but now their eyes are suddenly open to bigger enemies, so they believe he can just... what, sit in with them like it's all sunshine and rainbows? Like his presence doesn't make things more painful? "Look at how my tears ricochet" in a sense of a realization, the same sentiment as "There’s an ache in you, put there by the ache in me", the way he's hurting affects everyone. When he separated himself from the group in game it was noble, but now it's borderline sabotage of their progress out of avoidance, he's withholding closure, denying healing that has to be done, it isn't just about whatever mind games he's been playing with Shuichi, Kokichi is stuck in his game mindset, creating a tear in their group by alienating himself from it. He needs to talk with Miu, Gonta... even Kaito

He has to work out his place in the group and spend some time with friends, doing some healing before he gets back to Shuichi and they actually, finally talk things out, get together.

OK but what if Kokichi trusted Shuichi enough to in secret tell him his plan and they worked together? + saiouma platonic or romantic is your preference

After Kaede's execution Shuichi is stunned and torn apart. He has Kaito still but a sense of safety is gone and desperation starts to set in, can he even trust Kaito? Who can he trust?

Then Kokichi goes to him when it is late and most are asleep or otherwise not looking to them, "want to help me stop this killing game?" Kokichi asks him his voice low and calm, calculating even. "what?" Shuichi looks at him shocked who was this new person? Kokichi takes him aside to a completely private area.

"I have a plan to end this killing game. I need help and Kaito isn't going to do jack shit to help in the slightest because of his hero complex and everyone else is sketchy right now." he continues to explain but Shuichi silences him, "how can I help?"

And so their alliance began, they would help each other and watch out for each other behind the scenes while pretending to hate each other. It is so far perfect and going smoothly. As more deaths go on and happen Kokichi starts amping up his villian persona more and more in an attempt to hide his true feelings. The lies get bigger, more risky and more insane to the point that Miu decides to try kill him.

Of course he saw through it and tells Shuichi the next time they meet that night. "Miu is going to try and kill me. I might not be able to execute my plan to manipulate another into killing her before she kills me." Shuichi nods listening closely and looking around cautiously, "if that ends up happening I want you to do the plan on your own-" "wait what?!?" he screams before both he and Kokichi slap a hand or two on his mouth shushing him.

"I know it's bat shit insane I get it but it'll be our only option if I die. I hate that it might come to that but please do it if it happens OK?" he uncovers Shuichi's mouth who only nods a bit silently.

Kokichi ends up being able to convince someone to kill Miu and goes full villian persona scaring everyone extremely expect Shuichi who was expecting it. As it continues on Shuichi ends up putting himself more and more into the plan now that Kokichi is full villian and everyone at that point trusts him.

By the time that Maki tries to kill Kokichi tho Shuichi breaks the plan running at full speed to shield him taking hold of him, "please don't kill him!" he screams at her holding Kokichi close despite the poison going through his veins. "Saihara what the fuck is this?! I thought you hated him more than anyone else here!" Maki is shocked and Kaito runs to get an antidote, Shuichi smiles laughing a bit mirroring Kokichi.

"it's a lie!"

It doesn't take long for the last part of the falling apart plan Kokichi gets him successfully to the location where Kokichi would die but Shuichi is starting to resist against it refusing to kill him. “Shumai. I know this is going to be hard for you but listen we’ll be able to save everyone else from this living nightmare.” Shuichi starts breaking down crying, “but-but Mochi that’ll mean I’d loose you. Like I did Kaede I'll be all alone you're the only one here I can trust and-and..." Kokichi pulls him into a hug holding him close, "you won't be alone Shumai. It's not like Kaede's death she made a mistake and died while being full of despair. I am actively doing this for the rest of the group."

As they talk trying to work off the nerves they don't know that someone else is listening. Quickly Kiibo goes and gets the remaining members of the class as Kokichi is on the hydraulic press. Kaito restrains Shuichi with little effort from pressing the button to activate it Shuichi just letting it happen being highly distressed by having to do the action via the plan.

Kokichi is also restrained and put into a separate room as they start interrogating Shuichi who clams up refusing to speak. In guilt or fear they can't tell. When Kaito mentions asking Kokichi Shuichi snaps out begging them not to hurt him breaking down more in extreme distress trying to get out of the binds they put on him to keep him from attacking them.

The begging is loud enough for Kokichi to hear and be motivated to try and help him getting out of his own binds and running to get to Shuichi. Freeing him and holding him close to his chest as they both cry Kokichi telling Shuichi calm comforting things in his and collected voice.

"I don't want to do the plan any more Mochi I-I can't do it..." "I know Shumai I shouldn't of pushed your limits I'm sorry." he runs his hand through his hair petting his back, "I can't-I can't loose you... Kokichi I can't...." he wheezes in panicked breathes, "Shuichi look at me I'm still here. It didn't work out. Please breath it's all OK."

The rest of the group is stunned silent as they do this Kiibo even finding it most appropriate to leave deeming it more of a private matter. Once Shuichi is calmed down he still refuses to explain what they were fully planning as to not wanting to betray Kokichi’s trust and also showing where his loyalty is in a way to them all. Most of the class is shocked or appears to be betrayed. 

“Shumai you can just tell them. Remember what I told you.” Kokichi sighed putting a hand Shuichi’s shoulder “Go with the majority it’s safer” "exactly so please just once go against someone you care for."

Shuichi explains their plan as Kokichi leaves smiling weakly. Shuichi doesn't notice at first but when he's done explaining he notices and suddenly has the object permanence of a toddler as he freaks out running around in a attempt to find him before he does something rash. Kaito follows him trying to help him find Kokichi but they both don't succeed leaving Shuichi to call out to Kokichi with every name and nickname they have for each other in a slightly begging way even.

He passes out from the strain on his body and mind. By the time he wakes up his mind has cut out the whole day's events and is only confused by Kokichi or Kaito not being there to wake him up or greet him. When he asks Kiibo what is up with them Kiibo can't exactly tell him as he was forbidden from doing so by everyone else. Shuichi doesn't stop going to Himiko and Maki asking them but they seem hesitant when they say that they are just hanging out somewhere.

He ends up finding out that he can't seem to find Tsumugi to ask her if she knows and Himiko ends up snapping telling him that Kaito and Kokichi continued the plan and did indeed find the master mind. At the cost of their lives. The news hits Shuichi like a bus as the rest of them try to comfort him now knowing how close he was to both of them.

He can't take it and runs to where they planned to let Kokichi die and sees that it wasn't a lie. He was dead, gone. As Shuichi goes to it he finds Kokichi's scarf and a small note.

"Sorry I had to leave you behind. Don't forget about me my beloved Shumai. - your supreme leader Mochi"
