Sky Cotl Skytober 2024: A retrospective by ME!
All of my skytober pieces in chronological order! -> here The song I set it too! -> here
This year, I participated in an Inktober adjacent drawing event. I did the Sky Cotl version of Inktober, Skytober. Now that it's November 1st, I have thoughts and feelings about the experience, what I learned, what I did right, and what I can improve on! This post is very much for me to reconcile and reflect on the art I did this month, but please feel read and enjoy my raw thoughts as well. I feel like everybody can learn from or relate to what I'm gonna chatter on about below, so take a read if you're so inclined! I'll be touching on relatability, popularity vs niche, effort vs efficiency, and passion vs honing skill.
WHY I DID SKYTOBER
So, as I said above, I participated in Skytober! It's my first Inktober adjacent event EVER! I've done similar projects in the past related to other arts (NaNoWriMo for example) but ultimately failed! Why? Well, I just didn't see that stuff through. I did not have a strong goal, and thus the past projects inevitably failed.
This year, however, I was DETERMINED to finish this project! This is because I have been meaning to make my inevitable swap from Paint Tool Sai 2 to Clip Studio Paint for AGES. I've had this program since forever (and even had the old version Manga Studio as a kid!), but it was far too robust at the time for me to want to learn it. However, it's been sitting on my computer for ages, and I have a massive commission in the works currently! I felt many of CSP's tools would be useful for that commission, so I took a bit of a detour and decided that Skytober would help me sit down and actually spend time learning this damn program.
Needless to say, I think my attempts at learning at least a bit of the program was successful. I learned a lot of the basic functions and where I liked tools and functions placed, I learned how to fiddle with some interesting brushes, and I also spent a LOT of time learning how to (roughly) paint backgrounds! These are all skills I was desperately trying to learn anyways, so having some solid and strict direction very much helped. I still have a lot to learn program wise, but drawing (nearly) every day has definitely given me a solid foothold in this program. As a diehard SAI2 user, the jump is difficult! But I think I did alright.
MY CREATIVE MINDSET AND DIRECTION
Now, the art itself. There are favorites I have, and there are absolute duds as well. In my eyes, to be specific. Drawing (nearly) every day is bound to run you dry for some mental and creative resources, but I did a few things to help mitigate that and keep the train chugging. For a long time, I had been meaning to make a Sky Cotl animatic using the song Virtual Angel by ARTMS. That's a recent release from that music group, but it's been one of my favorites recently. I think it's a beautiful song, and with lyrics like 'for the sin of swallowing up the sun' and 'fly me to your eden, this is eden' and 'i'll be there for you when your wings break', I thought the song fit Sky Cotl's vibe perfectly. However, I know absolutely nothing about animatics, so I decided to repurpose the idea into assigning a lyric to each Skytober piece instead. This massively helped with direction of ideas. It wasn't perfect, but it still significantly helped. Another thing I did to keep myself inspired was I actually wrote out a significant number of my ideas beforehand. They were not super fleshed out at times, and often they changed if I got inspired in another way. And other times, I just completely gave up on any ideas and decided the goal was just to finish SOMETHING, if just to keep the ball rolling. Either way, at least planning some things ahead of time helped eliminate a majority of the 'idk what to draaaaw!' woes down. It also helped me stay efficient, and having the song as direct inspiration sort of kept stoking the fires of my passion and helped me keep going! Raaah! Even so, I still ended up with duds, and you can absolutely see that reflected in each pieces notes.
RECEPTION OF MY WORK
I've never had this much attention on my work before. I used to run a pretty popular twitter before restarting it (and then deleting that second one just recently due to twitter being twitter), but I've never surpassed 1000 notes on anything before. Please understand, while I know that's not really all that much, for me that is! It's like imagining 1000 people standing in the same room as me giving me a thumbs up on my silly picture. It was amazing!! I would look at my notes all day at the start of the month with a smile on my face. It was surreal seeing people's thoughts coming in in real time. Seeing everybody's thoughts and feelings and interpretations of my works was amazing and so interesting to see. There would be people simply screaming at my work with glee, giving me genuine and sincere compliments, giving me their interpretations of how my works made them feel, and so much more! The most jarring thing for me was seeing a few people tag their friends in my work. I would sit there like 'huh, this person liked this piece so much that they had to show their friend directly!'. And it made me smile.
I also got to see in real time how my efforts can directly correlate with the interactions I got. And that swung both ways. There are some pieces I posted that barely had eyes on them, and it wasn't because I did poorly. It was because I think people can very much see when something is low effort or if you post something without confidence. Meanwhile, there were some pieces I posted that I sort of just threw together, and people LOVED? My picture for the prompt 'Mural' went absolutely bonkers, and I don't even really think it's all that good! On that piece I was just testing out manga stone wall brushes and fussing with glowing layer modes. It's by far my most popular Skytober piece as of posting this retrospective though, so it's interesting to see!
Another thing I saw that was interesting and I picked up very quickly on was my own OC content sees less eyes! Not because my OCs are bad or anything, but strangers can't relate to it! Even if the art is baller, my OC content had less interest than my more vague pieces. The pieces where I posted random moths (the closer to base game look, the better) were the ones people liked the best! That, or if I posted in game characters.
OVERALL
All in all, it was a very enlightening experience! If I do another event like this again, I will not pigeonhole myself to the square little paint stamp vibe I had going on. That made it hard to branch out or many images look wider. I will also put less effort in. Funny that I word it like that, but I actually think I put TOO MUCH effort in on some pieces! That made my inspiration (and other pieces) suffer. I also think that while I enjoyed posting my works with song lyrics, I won't do that again. Or if I do, I'm choosing a shorter song. I might also combine prompt days next time.

hi! I hope it’s okay to ask, but what program/brushes did you use for your latest splatoon post? :]c i love the texture and lineart!!
Thank you!
The majority of it was done with a brush called "The Pixeliest" that appears to no longer be on the Clip Studio Asset store, but as far as I can tell it's just a basic round binary brush with the "post correction" setting set to 2. (If you don't use CSP, you can get the same effect from any round binary brush with no pen pressure or stabilizer.)
The fluff on Pearl's robe is the default CSP tone scraping brush, and the hearts/diamonds are from this brush set (one of my favorites, it's so cute)
#it's always okay to ask me art questions btw. I'm here 2 post cephalopod yuri and have a good time not be a snob#ask

hi! how are you doing?
(love those pitch & jack dolls btw (theyre so squishable!!)
I just got myself CSP bcuz of the discount. I've been wondering, what brushes do you use for your artworks? the lineart and colour?? apologies if this has been asked before, but i rlly wanna know ^^''
hav a nice day!
Hey!! I am still. In the stress. But I am alive. (and thank you so much!!!)
I hope you’re enjoying CSP so far!!! The asset store is my favorite part of it so I definitely encourage you to shop around and try a ton of brushes until you find the ones you like! But, here are the ones that I use:
This is my go-to as of late. It’s the PERFECT digital pencil imo, I haven’t found any others that capture the same sketchy roughness of traditional pencil on paper. The line variation is vast even on the same brush size, and depends on tilt & pressure and I’m kind of obsessed lol. I use it for sketching and doing lineart.
If I’m looking for lineart that’s less sketchy/pencil-y, the mechanical pencil of this set is my go-to. The marker I tend to use on larger sizes for things like blush or large areas of shadow when I’m rendering - anything with a semi-soft edge I want to lay down pretty quick. (Fair warning, I think this brushset has been updated since I downloaded but I assume the new versions are good as well)
These are my more painterly rendering brushes. I’ll use the mechanical and marker brushes from the previous set in tandem with these when I’m doing a more blended & detailed colored piece. But I’ve also used them for sketching and lineart in the past - my Danny Phantom art was largely done with these two brushes.
Other than that, I use the lasso fill tool to quickly lay down large areas of color, and for more gradual gradients I use a mix of the soft airbrush and blend tools. Also I use liquify, like……a lot……

Hey uh, what drawing apps do you use/recommend?
I mostly use photoshop and sometimes krita
As far as recomendations go, I don't really like recomending programs since it really does depend on what you are going to use (pc, laptop, android tablet, ipad, you name it) and how you feel about it
But just to list some programs I know about/ have used at some point:
Clip Studio Paint, Infinite Painter, Autodesk, Fire Alpaca, Paint tool Sai (I dont know if this keeps existing) and Aggie/Magma I guess
(i dont have an ipad and I only know of Procreate for it)
I'm gonna go in a bit of a ramble so I'm gonna leave that under the cut
Like I said I dont really like recomending programs because what works for some people might not work for others
For example Clip Studio Paint is an amazing program with a lot of tools that'll make your life easier, it works for pc, for android tablets, and I think for ipad too. it has an animation feature, the tools it has for comics/manga are amazing, and theres a whole asset store for brushes and whatnot with free stuff you can get! A lot of friends have move from photoshop to csp, most of my supervisors use that, and it called me like a siren call. but I cant use it. idk what is it, but i just cant get used to it, I've tried it in 3 different times for a couple of months and it never clicked with my brain. so I don't use it
I have an android tablet that I bought so I could draw digitally without being chained to my desk but I rarely draw there because I dont like the way it feels, but I use Infinite Painter and is a very compleate program there are tools under a paywall but is very cheap to buy
Autodesk, Fire Alpaca and Sai were some of the programs I used when I started digitally, I used to jump from one to the other to see what felt better (I ended up using photoshop) Autodesk and Fire Alpaca are free (as far as I know/remember) and Sai you do have to buy it but is a one purchase for life kind of thing (as far as I know)
Aggie/Magma is a browser based program, I don't really like it lmao, it lags a lot for me and my pc fans go like crazy whenever I open it, but I know people who use it as their default and I've seen people do very cool things in a shared canvas.
Same way, many people find photoshop very daunting or confusing or restricting while is my favorite thing and I feel like fish in water there. So it depends on your preferences!
My best recomendation is to jump from one place to the other, use those free programs and use up the free trails of the paid ones (and pirate photoshop) see what feels right to you!
And remember this very important bit of information:
Programs are just a tool. The tool does not make the artist.
Sure the wrong tool can mess you up, but that's why is important to experiment and find what works for you. But using fancy or pricy programs are not gonna make you a better artist, after all, there's people who do realistic portraits on ms paint

So @xannerz made a post about ArtStudio Pro and I tried it, because procreate is frustrating me lately.
My thoughts so far!
Pros:
Layout similar to photoshop
Autosaves every few minutes
Layer contents flicker once when you select them, so you know which layer has what. (HUGE DEAL. No more "wrong layer")
Velocipen. (thickness/weight corresponding to speed of your pen strokes!)
Turn off finger responses with a single button. No fiddling with every single setting.
Base layer can be transparent.
Toolbar can have favorites added to it.
Layer styles similar to Ps. (stroke, drop shadow etc)
MUCH higher layer limits.
THE PENCIL BRUSHES ARE SO GOOD YOU DON'T EVEN KNOW. SKETCHING FEELS LIKE SKETCHING.
Better brush response overall.
I'm sure there's more, I'm still learning!
Cons: (I'm sure I'll figure these out)
No color drop function like Procreate
No quick shapes (when holding down the stylus at the end of a curve or line, it will let you edit the shape into a more refined arc, line, or shape.)
No option to quickly fill or clear a layer without swapping to the bucket tool or deleting the layer (that I've found.)
The undo/redo buttons are small and in an awkward place and I can't figure out if I can move them.
Overall, ASP has been great, and it has a similar model to CSP, but MUCH more reasonable. (seven bucks a year is VERY doable.)
I may have found a new art program!
I'm holding on final judgment until after I try coloring.

Your art is very beautiful! May I ask what brushes you use? I'd love to get the same effect with my art! (Oh, and I use Clip Studio Paint! Not sure which you use, but hopefully I can still find the same or similar brushes. Lol)
thank you very much!! Yeah for sure, here's pretty much all of the main brushes I use. I also use clip studio paint!
lineart/sketch brushes:
firstly, most of my stuff uses cy's grease pencil from this pack. it's funny bc i downloaded it years ago and didnt really like it at first. but when i tried it again a couple years ago i was like wait... this is SO good. i use it for sketching and lineart (first image). there's also csp's default "flat marker" which im apparently obsessed with (second image here). it's good for shading too! lastly (third image) i'll use the stumpy pencil pack here, this one i pretty much just use for lineart but it's by far my favorite clean lineart brush. i'll be honest i had to do weird conversion to get it to work in csp and i have no idea what i did at this point BUT ! if u search up how to convert it im sure The Internet can aid you as well. i think
Coloring:
when it comes to coloring i mainly use this water color pack and then this gouache pack (which doubles as what i use for my semi-lineless painting style- the second row here). if you see any coloring that looks more painter-like and textured it's most likely me using the gouache pack. sometimes i like to do the solid/base colors with an opaque brush and then use the water color to shade bc i like the textured look :P
side note: when i shade using another layer set to multiply, i'll either use the flat marker or cy's watercolor brush (both in the entry above this one)
Additional Stuff:
both of these for certain background help
this set of overlays (not a brush, but i figured i'd add it since it definitely helps adding texture to my work)
these textures (again, not a brush. i use these so that my backgrounds arent just Blinding White- mostly for myself bc plain white is hard on my eyes lol)
-
As You Can See I'm like. constantly messing around with new brushes. I actually have well over a hundred that I've downloaded LMAO. If you ever see a piece by me and want to know what I used, please let me know!! I'm usually able to remember the brushes I used, at least some of them :P especially more recent stuff, I've been experimenting a lot with painting methods and various new brushes

Hello, your drawings are really beautiful. I hope you don't mind if I ask you a few questions.
1. Which program do you use and recommend for drawing?
2. Are there any tips you can share for drawing?
3. How do your drawings look so smooth? (I use Ibispaint and the drawings do not look smooth at all.)
4. Do you have any advice to get to a better level in drawing?
Hi!! Hope you're doing well Anon! And sorry for replying late :'(
Here we gooooo:
I changed the way I work since the last ask I received (I had to because my tablet started acting weird again and my hand would end up hurting by the end TwT)
1/ The program I use is Sai 2! And when I want to add filters/textures, I copy and paste the drawing to CSP and modify it there! The noise filter I use comes with this brush set on CSP 👇
As for the program I'd recommend, it would definitely be Procreate! A friend of mine sometimes lends me her Ipad so that I can draw stuff for her and it's always the best experience ever! (far better than CSP and Sai methinks) That's why I'm saving money rn in order to get an Ipad too and finally be done with this old tablet of mine :') (it's a Wacom Intuos CTH-480 if you're wondering)
2/ Here's how I basically draw (I hope this helps!!)
3/ It's cuz I always turn the stabilizer on 15 when I do the lineart >:)
I turn it to 0 when I sketch tho'!
4/ Idk if this is helpful but here's how I improved:
When I started taking drawing seriously I first began by improving on how I draw faces! I would look up my favorite artists' stuff and try to understand how they drew theirs >:) I first would copy their art and then try to replicate it without looking and see if I remembered and understood how they went about it! I then started to combine everything I liked from each until I reached a result I really liked :')
The only downside to this is that I didn't study anatomy AT ALL so I started all over again using the same method but with full bodies, and after I felt like I learned how to draw very basic poses I started looking up references on Pinterest and try to replicate them into basic shapes! And that leads us to today lmao
Keep in mind that I still use references to this day! They're very important!! For example, I used Gwendoline Christie as a reference for my recent Robb X)
And here's some examples of my old embarrassing doodles:
ANYWAYS, remember that the most important thing of all is to have fun Anon! I hope this was helpful!! And I'm wishing you the best for your art journey :') NEVER GIVE UP!!! 💖💖💖💖💖

I just discovered your art and it’s so beautiful!! Have you thought about sharing a process video or brush details sometime? I also use procreate and your painting work is so lovely, it’s soothing to the eyes, I’d love to learn more about it 💕
Hi!
I'm really happy you like my work so much! Tbh, I've always wanted to share my drawing process, but never ended up doing it. Thanks to your ask, I'm finally motivated to write one!
I will go over my process / brushes / and other extra things of this particular drawing... under the cut!
I will go over my process / brushes / and other extra things of this particular drawing... under the cut!
Starting out:
The most decisive part of drawing (in my opinion, anyways) is the initial sketch. I usually find myself drawing multiple preliminary sketches before going to coloring, hence why the video below is cropped in the beginning. There are so many things running through my mind as I sketch - should she look at the viewer? Should I make her cross her arms? How should how clothes flow? That sort of thing.
The most frustrating thing in art is definitely having an idea, but being unable to carry it out due the skill set not matching up. For example, most of my drawings have the characters standing there like 🧍♂️ I wish I can do something much cooler like having Kaine pointing her blade at Nier but I lack the skill to draw poses like that. Better yet, I want to be able to draw from different angles. One day... I swear!!
Coloring:
There's no lineart section because I barely have patience to do so loll. Back before uni started, I had enough time to go line my drawings on CSP using my tablet back home. Nowadays, I'm just drawing on my ipad whenever I can. My art style changed a lot due to this new adjustment, which is pretty funny because it's been only one semester so far.
The brushes I usually use are the following, I don't usually use anything else other than these, unless I am working with metals. I use the "glass" brush in pretty much everythingggg, from sketching to cleaning up. Lmk if anyone wants to try the brush. The edge brush is by JenClaessen , which I love to do to shade skin. The last tool I use is the ordinary airbrush. My favorite thing adding soft lighting using it!
I like to do this thing where I use the glass brush at low opacity to add a complementary color (yellow in this case) in the area where the base and shade meet (1)! Another thing I do it adding a brighter, saturated color towards the end of a round surface. This is adds shape to the 2d drawing, since there is light creeping from behind her (2).
Because my art style is highly stylized, the lighting in my pieces seem to hit harsher than reality. I make the shading where it meets the base color the darkest, and the shading gets lighter as it gets farther away, or vice versa (3). In other words, the shading near her nose is darker than the other areas on her face.
I would usually lower the opacity of the lines and change their color appropriately, to give the drawing a softer feel. Coloring is basically also my cleanup stage too. As I color, I will erase the lines and make the colors show the way instead. I would also like to note that I utilize the airbrush in skin to show texture of it, while the use the glass brush to do the intricate details in the hair/clothes.
Editing:
For editing, I usually start by copying/pasting my whole drawing then tone curving immediately. Tone curving is basically adjusting the lights and darks by manipulating this line. The line towards the right changes the lights, vice versa for the darks. I don't remember the exact configurations for this drawing, but it should be akin to this:
After tone curving, I like to slap on a gradient map for more interesting effects! Similarly to the tone curve, the colors towards the right highlight the lighter colors, and vice versa. Below are the colors I chose for this drawing. Tbh, I can't really explain why I chose these colors specifically - I think the best results would come from going with your guts and trying to use colors to match the vibes.
Honestly, with procreate's features, you can't really go wrong. Sometimes, I'd tone curve a drawing multiple. Other times I would add two gradient maps that contain different colors together, with different layer effects. The noise filter is super charming when applied subtly to the shades. The chromatic aberration makes lazy doodles polished.
-
Here is the process video. I draw multiple things in a single canvas, so I cut those bits out.

a long and overly detailed guide on transferring CSP brushes in between devices because i am stupid so someone out there probably is too and might need this
yeah so i spent like the past 3 days trying to figure everything out, and i figured i would save people time in case they were going through the same stuff (also in case this happens again and i Forget)
this guide is specifically for version 1.0, the discontinued version. I have no clue if it applies to any version after, but you can try it.
so let's say you draw on your laptop, and you get a new one. here is what you should do
...actually before i get into the steps, make sure to back up all of your settings and brushes here. it will make your life a lot easier trust me
back up all your app settings on your old device, and then restore them in your new one once you have installed CSP onto your new device
HOWEVER STARTING FROM THE TOP...buy some sort of USB/hard drive. stick it into your new laptop and then copy and paste everything necessary into it (all CSP/CELSYS setup/files. additionally any art files or whatever else you have downloaded that you wanna bring along, but in this case, we're only talking abt the CSP app itself)
once you copy all the necessary files onto your hard drive (MAKE SURE before you eject the hard drive, that it is safe to eject. the one i used had an option where i had to click eject hard drive, and only after clicking it could i safely eject it)
okay now you have all the stuff you need. stick the hard drive into your new device and copy and paste your stuff into your new device.
These steps might take more or less time but now going back to the cloud back up thing from the beginning. if this process is successful, once you click "restore app settings", everything should be fine and you should be all good to go and this tutorial ends here
However, if you open CSP and all of your brushes have become deformed like so, and almost the entirely of your materials folder is empty, this is what this guide is for💀
As far as I know, if this happens you're basically fucked 💀 you can keep trying to backup your cloud settings, but after a couple of times, if none of your brushes are restored, you will have to use other means.
You will have to transfer brushes over to your new device individually, and during this stage, I really recommend you just download all your favorite brushes. You can redownload the other ones in the CSP assets store later
go to your old device and right click your fav brush. Let's say my fav brush is the Lan Brush. I'm going to right click Lan Brush, click export sub tool, and download it. It will naturally save as a sut file (Lan Brush.sut)
idk if other people had to do this, but I did so. basically you go to your downloads and make a new zipped file, name it whatever your brush is (so Lan Brush)
once the zipped file has been created, you now have the zipped file and the sut file. take the sut file, and drag it into the zipped file
this step kind of requires a google drive but i trust you have one. so go to your google drive. take the zipped file, and just drag it into your drive, and it should naturally upload
now, switch to your new device. if you go onto your google drive, the zipped file should be there. download that zipped file, and then right click, and click extract all.
go to CSP, right click any brush (it doesnt matter which one, it will not affect your brushes dont worry), and click import sub tool. navigate to your folder, or in my case, Lan Brush, and click on it. you should now see the sut file inside the folder
click on the sut file, and now your brush should be uploaded! Feel free to drag your brush into your CSP material folder to save it there too :) do this as many times as you need with however many brushes you want
this is also good for uploading brushes in general, so if you make a fun brush you wanna share with your friends, you can turn it into a downloadable zip file and then share it by exporting the sub tool
BUT WAIT THERES MORE !!!!! I've covered brushes, but what about 3D models? what about image materials? Sites will tell you it is currently not possible to transfer it without blender but don't believe them, i have the will of a desperate artist
For the most part, if the 3D model or the image asset is available on the CSP asset store, I would recommend just searching it up and downloading it, its the fastest way💀 however if these assets are for whatever reason deleted and unavailable, then you can do this
Let's start with 3D models. Let's say you have a 3D model or a body shape asset or something.
make a blank canvas and drag whatever model(s) you want on there. as long as theyre on separate layers, its fine.
now save the canvas as a clip studio paint file as you normally would.
go to your google drive, and drag the csp file into it. it should upload naturally as a zipped file
Go onto your new device and download the zipped file. Right click and extract all. Now you should be able to access the CSP file. Open it on CSP.
now go to your layers. you see the layer the 3D model is on? take it and drag it into your CSP materials folder.
congrats! now your 3D model is an official asset again and you can use it whenever you want
This also applies to image materials too, and basically every other asset, so you can do that with your other stuff too.
That is where this tutorial should end but if you're like me, you will struggle even more😇 this step only applies to image materials, so i cannot provide you with further advice for imported 3D assets
Let's say you try to save all of your image assets in separate layers into a CSP file to upload onto your new device. however, you are out of storage. your file keeps encountering errors, and you cannot save your file no matter what, thus you cannot upload it to your google drive
this is what i would refer to as a last resort. it is super annoying so dont do it unless you're desperate but open up a tumblr draft. yes open up a tumblr draft.
you are going to copy that layer and paste it into your drafts. save it
okay now go onto your new device, and open an empty CSP canvas. Log into tumblr, go to your drafts and click on the image.
copy and paste the image into your blank canvas and then take the layer the image is on, and drag it into your material downloads like you would in the previous process with the 3D stuff
If by any chance the image that you are copy and pasting is transparent in any way, or black and white, when you paste it onto tumblr, tumblr will provide you with a white background, which is kind of annoying
either ways once your layer has become transparent again, you can drag the layer into your material downloads, and you're done.
but continue to copy and paste it back onto your canvas, and now you should have your image material with a white background.
To get rid of the background and make it transparent again, click "edit" at the top, and then "Convert brightness to opacity". Converting brightness to opacity will make your image greyscale, but I'm kind of assuming your image is already in black in white.
If it's transparent and not in black and white, idk how to help you there, you'd have to recolor it once its transparent again ig💀 this mainly applies to lineart type images (where recoloring it is easy with the bucket tool)
That's all I have to say, but if you have any problems with any of the steps, feel free to ask me (I'm not the most tech savvy person though, hence why I'm making this guide to help myself too💀 but I will try to answer you as best as I can)!

What type of sai brushes (and settings) do you use? I’m generally curious on how you get such good brush work in your art. I always have troubles with finding a good brush to my liking.
I've actually been using CSP recently (not paying the subscription because ew ) I bought it a few years ago and finally started using it on my tablet
The main brush I use is called mameo and it's pretty amazing!
I turned off the watercolor effect and did some editing until i was happy and it's my favorite brush so far ✨

Organization
I work digitally, but I was taught mainly through traditional art, and I used to use a combination of different traditional ink tools to draw, quills, brushes, markers, pens.
Now I work digitally, since I have so much control, I tend to just use one inking brush. And normally, I have all my CSP brushes organized by type. A pencil section, an ink section, a paint section, etc.
Today I remembered all the tools I used to use, and wondered why I didn’t try more with multiple brushes when I inked, and I realized it was because I separated them all! I don’t think to ever open up the pen section at all.
So, I reorganized. Mainly, I put all my favorite tools in one section. I don’t need access to ALL my ink brushes, just my favorite one. Now I have a quick toolbox where I can quickly switch between a bunch of different pens, brushes, markers, like I used to do in the old days.
The results so far have been really fun!

For the artist ask! ⬜️ and 🔴?
⬜-Favorite part about drawing (and least favorite)?
Favorite: I think inking is the most consistently enjoyable part so I think I’ll count that as my favorite! But when coloring and sketching are fun coloring and sketching are FUN. My least favorite is highly variable because usually it’s just whatever takes the longest and/or makes my hands hurt the most lol. (Not really a part of drawing but it is very very satisfying to me - I recently figured out how to turn on the brush cursor on CSP and it’s made every single brush so much fun to use)
🔴-WIPs (show if you want)
I have many many wips and couldn’t choose which so they’re below the cut now :)
Might never finish this one but it’s Otohan and Relvin’s first meeting! ^-^
Otomom and Kidmogen. That is all. (No jk it isn’t; this is Imogen having a nap after playing in the rain and I love her) (also otohan would hypothetically be tucking her in while her clothes were still wet but whatever)
Here you can see my complete lack of cropping skills because I’m sure there is a way to crop it so it’s only Otohan’s triangle. I however do not know how to do that. (This is for one of those color wheel challenges as a “character wrapped” kinda thingy :] )
Also bonus d6 of yours, which is technically finished but I want to draw the other ones too! (Also seriously thank you for the photos they are very shiny and fun to draw :] ) (also this looks SO much better from far away I swear)

What is your fav digital brush to draw?
I got more than one and thanks to the peeps who commissioned me in the past, I managed to have more of a footing to experiment with paid brushes! 🙏❤️
I'm very fickle and prone to changes, so it might not be the same next time but here are what I'm obsessed with so far!
On Procreate, my favorite brushes would be the sample set from TrueGrit Texture Supply for their halftone and texture brushes (which I did pay a $15 license later on so I can use for commercial works), and these free-to-download sets in Gumroad.
I used the latter religiously throughout the years for sketching and inking, as it was what got me dedicated to continue using procreate!
On Clip Studio, I really like this [Free] set because for something that looks like a basic brush, it is as smooth as butter! 🧈
The second brush is my favorite to do typography and sound fx in comics. I love the expressiveness and gritty texture.
Both, you've mainly seen in my use for my YBF arts.
This one below is worth 10 Clippy, and I love how clean and gritty it is! You've seen me using this in more recent Broken Colors arts.
I also have some favorites from here [PAID]:
For the price, you get a lot more for your money! These two are a favorite from there, and I'm a big fan of the pencils!
Hope that answers your question and have a good one! 🌞

What are your favourite ways to create texture in digital work? 🐸♥️
Such a good question, thank you so much friend!!
Since I started digital art in summer 2020, I basically used the brushes to create textures like I would do with traditional art. Meaning I would only use the brushes textures and play with their settings. Which is a very fun and playful way to do it imo!
However, even though I usually have a lot of fun with this approach, it's not good for my smol weak wrist and fingers. But (and mostly thanks to you!!! <3 ) I recently moved to a gentler approach by using texture overlays (my favorite so far is the handmade paper of MaxPack). This way, I can use my favorite pencil brush (the csp basic one hehe) to draw the borders of the shapes and fill them easily with the bucket without colouring inside all by hand. It makes the process cosier for me as it's gentler on my body. And it also allows me to pay more attention to details in the texture I want to create, while I couldn't do it that much with my former approach as most of my energy would go to the coloring. It also makes me want to try to create my own overlays and to experiment !!

what brushes do you use?? if you don't mind sharing
depends! it depends so much!!
if i'm using this brush, it's usually because i decided to sketch with it. i'll do my sketch and then i'll erase the messier parts and that will be my "lineart." from there i'll color but i never shade with it i don't like how it looks. i tend to think of it as my messy doodling brush :) if i bust this one out at any point, i'm probably not going to make a fully rendered piece (i totally have though)
i use this one for a little bit of everything! sketches, lines, coloring, and i'll occasionally block in basic shadows and light sources with it, but as far as that kind of thing goes i prefer to useeeeeeeeeee
my favorite brush <3... i do all my coloring business on one layer, and that's how i get the blending to look the way it does. you could probably get the same effect by shading on a separate layer from your base colors, but it wouldn't be as easy :/ and we like art to be easy in this house. but if you're shading a heavily patterned character and you don't want to end up blending all of that work away, what i sometimes do is make a copy of my color layer and i'll shade on that instead. this way, you get the easy blending effect and you won't have to redraw anything because the og will still be underneath
with these settings the blending will be pretty much automatic. you might feel like tweaking them a bit, but all you gotta do is just scribble a bunch until it looks good (stellar advice i know). i usually like a not-quite-perfectly-blended look, but if i'm not happy with it for whatever reason i'll use...
this! for Smoothness. OR
i'll use this ^^ it's nice for hair and such! other than these i only use two other brushes
(ralsei likes being held like that)
this one tends to not look too much different from like, the g-pen at first glance but it's just kinda fun to use. it's my other Messy Doodle brush
this brush has one purpose and it's clouds.
if i've ever used anything else it was one time to experiment with and it didn't stick so i forgot about it forever (these are all default brushes in csp btw! nothing downloaded because i don't know how to download brushes)
#basically i have 500 gazillion ways of completing any given art piece and this is the closest you'll ever get to me explaining my process#because i usually don't know what it is either <3#doodles#mailbox#the little drawings to showcase the brushes were my warm ups today... i draw noelle so much she comprises 90% of my warm up doodles
