Pirate Warriors 4 Thoughts

Pirate Warriors 4 is so damn satisfying. Being able to play as a huge cast of characters and just wailing on big villains like Crocodile, Doflamingo, Big Mom, etc is just great fun.

The combat’s not especially deep, with traditional Musou combat being the main form of attack, but we get a dodge which can also be used to get from a-b super quickly. It also damages enemies, too!

But we also get a similar system to DW9 where if you hold down R1, you get access to four specials which are super damaging. There’s also a super mode that increases your damage output, speed and I believe defence. 

Maps are also much more elaborate (almost to a fault). Previous PW games used the traditional, blocky Musou map forumla 

Whereas PW4 has more winding/weaving maps to explore. It makes the locations feel much more natural.

Unfortunately, some levels are multi-floored so your objective could be on another floor but wouldn’t show up on the map unless you open the map screen. This is my one biggest complaint with this game. Another is some missions tell you to “defeat all enemy commanders” or something, but they roam the levels and aren’t shown on the map so you just need to run around trying to find them. Not great when you’re against a time-limit. 

Another complaint is that rank-requirements aren’t shown, like, at all. So it’s mainly trial and error. I thought to myself "did I not beat enough enemies, or did I take too long to beat it?” a lot. And, my final complaint is the load times. On Switch at least, they’re atrocious, but inconsistent. In Dramatic Log (story mode) load times are the worst, taking upwards of a minute or more to load each level. I can’t speak for Free Log yet, but Treasure Log has levels load in only around 20 seconds. When loading back to the menu after completing a TL mission is there you’re hit with a longer load screen, though it’s only around 40 seconds.

Back to positives; they’ve added an upgrade system which I really like! You have a thing called Treasure Maps, which are essentially upgrade trees. You have one Main Map which applies upgrades to every character, then each character has two additional ones which apply only to them. These use Beli and coins that you acquire when defeating enemies. Better upgrades require both more Beli and coins from tougher enemeis.

I really dig the additional modes too, though there aren’t many. You have a Treasure Log which takes main levels and randomises pretty much everything, from which level you play on, to the enemies and objectives. It’s neat! There are also a ton of characters to play as (over 40 with an additional 9 coming as DLC)

The soundtrack too!! I adore PW3′s OST, and this game takes many themes from that game and remixes them adding riffs or remaking them entirely with new instruments, giving them an entirely new feel. I’d highly recommend listening to the soundtrack if you get the chance. It’s got a jazz-rock sound to it and it’s absolutely up my alley.

In conclusion, the gameplay is fun, the roster is massive, and there seems to be a fair amount of content here, if just a tad less than PW3. I do think the improvements make up for the slight reduction in content though. Just know that like PW3 and its Dressrosa ending being non-canon (being made before Dressrosa was completed in the manga) PW4 does a similar thing with Wano; it makes up its own, non-canon ending.

ace of diamond (season 1) review

Hey there! I have recently finished the first season of Ace of Diamond and I’m going to be reviewing on five categories: plot/pacing, characterization/relationships, voice acting, art and OST. Aaaand because of how much I enjoyed it, I’m going to throw in my favorite character, dynamic and OP/ED. At the end I’ll be adding rewatchability/recc score. 

Genre: Shonen / Sports Subgenres: Comedy / Slice of Life / School  Synopsis: Sawamura Eijun is a unique southpaw pitcher from a small town in Nagano with a lot of potential but unpolished skills. After being scouted to play for Seidou High School (a prestigous baseball school in Tokyo) he is encouraged by his friends and family to go and accept the offer and pursue his passion for baseball at a higher level. Confident to the point of arrogant, he declares that he will be the ace pitcher on this new team and be the best -- but has to grapple with the fact he is surrounded now by extremely powerful, talented players who have been honing their skills for years-- some of whom are better than him, like his rival Furuya Satoru, a pitcher with a wicked fastball. Together, this team aims to be the best in Japan and aim for the Summer Koshien, tackling formidable teams who stand in their way--as well as work on their own goals, dreams, fears and insecurities. 

Plot & pacing: The pacing of this show is very well done. In a 75 episode first season, it is rather long, with many of the baseball games drawn out. But its well worth it, as the writing brings a lot of emotional gratification by “feeling what they feel.” Starting with Sawamura being scouted, going through intense spring training and the selection of the summer starting roster, throughout the highs and lows of the summer season and into the post-summer scrimmages and finally rounding out the season with the third-year retirement game before the fall tournament raffle, every bit is given important narrative attention. 

The reveal of information through the eyes of the protagonist; not knowing about Chris Yuu Takagawa’s injury until Sawamura knows it, not knowing how much the current third years sucked as players until the right moment through flashbacks during the tipping point of the finals game, for example -- is such an important choice that we as an audience feel what he feels. The summer games feel very high stakes, the emotional impact is well-earned; every victory feels like it was earned and not given through plot armor or well ~obviously Seidou is the protagonist team, they have to win.~ Seidou as a team was written as strong but not invincible. SPOILER: This is emphasized at the finals game against Inashiro. Despite losing, while emotionally devastating, it feels like it was a logical writing choice and will be important growth for not just Sawamura but the team as a whole. 

The yips arc that follows the loss wraps up in a very wholesome retirement game, with Sawamura not fully recovering, but beginning to do truly do so, and the hopeful note of beginning the fall tournament, leaving the audience ready and excited for more. 

As a side note, Ace of Diamond very beautifully balances comedy to drama, so it takes itself seriously but is also genuinely comedic. I have two running jokes of “fellas, is it gay to x” and “screenshot of out context being x” as well as actually laughing over some of the planned jokes. But it is truly an emotional carthartic journey.

characterization & relationships: All of the characters feel very well-rounded with diverse ethnic and social backgrounds and personality traits. Some may be static but many of them experience growth to become better people and players. Sawamura is a good “bouncing board” of a character, as someone who goes from arrogant to experiencing several setbacks and a devastating loss that makes him examine his own biases, weaknesses and flaws that also reveals to his opponents their own shortcomings. Several other characters are better players than him, and that’s okay. On the flipside, one of the canon examinations as well as audience reaction is that Coach Kataoka has a team who is a family, a well-oiled machine who works amazingly together because they trust and care for one another, that he encourages growth and inspires them to be the best not just as baseball players, but as individuals as well. The opposing teams are also not just blank slates to fight against, but thoughtful people with their own desires, backgrounds and flaws--Mei Narumiya is cocky and unable to handle criticism once put on a pedestal, Sanada Shunpei has low stamina, etc etc. 

Something that’s extremely important to reemphasize is the relationship the Seidou team has to one another in that everyone affects everyone else. Sawamura chooses to go to Seidou specifically because Miyuki Kazuya, a first year at the time, encouraged him to pitch, so he had one upperclassman who already believed in him by the time he enrolled. Sawamura has both batchmates (first years Furuya Satoru and Haruichi Kominato) that encourage him through rivalry (Furuya) or gentle friendship (Haruichi) and several upperclassmen he admires and multiple times states he adores this team as it is, because he looks up to them for guidance and inspiration-- quiet team captain Tetsuya Yuuki, loud outfielder Isashiki Jun (the namesake of this blog, “the spitz of seidou”), speed demons Ryousuke Kominato and Youichi Kuramochi, and more. 

In particular, he has an exchange of growth with Chris Yuu Takagawa, someone he mistook for being uncaring and hopeless about baseball with a dead-eyed appearance. Chris, after being injured, all but had given up on playing again, but Sawamura’s noisy and blunt personality who kept pushing him encouraged him to return to the field, and have hope again. Chris is a teacher that Sawamura then deeply respects and is there for him when he has the yips, returning the favor to help break him out his funk. The symbolism. *weeps*

Important to note also it that is isn’t just about Sawamura and the effect he has on them, but the relationships they have with each other. The Kominato brothers have their own relationship where Haruichi wants to be like his older brother; Isashiki may act wild and aggressive and cocky, but he is truly humbled by their team captain Tetsu; Miyuki and Chris met years before Seidou and that informs their dynamic and the kind of players they are today. This also extends to other teams; some have similarities like Akikawa Academy revering their pitcher Yang Shunchen and how that parallels with Seidou adoring Tanba even when he was out with an injury, and others juxtaposed with them i.e. how some players at Inashiro seem to resent the spotlight Mei receives or Shirakawa callously telling another player to kill himself. 

I also wanted to note the way Coach Kataoka also sees his team; he is in many ways like a stern but loving father figure who wants the best out of his boys in every way, off and on the field. Other coaches seem to care more about money or fame than their wellbeing (Coach Todoroki or the replacement coach for Seidou), and others have different styles as coaches whether from pro experience or just age. It really emphasizes that it’s not just about the talent a team may or may not have, but how those players are nurtured as people.

Voice Acting: The voices of this cast are spot on. Everyone’s voice seems to match their face and personalities and all of the voice actors give 110% to the character. The voices really make it for me, as I’m very particular about the sounds. It feels very realistic and the voices really make them seem like actual people and gives the audience a reason to invest. I’ve got nothing but praise for the voice actors and voice direction of this cast. Art: I could go on and on about the art. The motion is very fluid, the backgrounds are amazing. The character designs are stunning and everyone feels unique and given thought. Style-wise it was very refreshing to see as a lot of modern anime I’ve been watching seems to have the stereotypical “2000s” feel, whereas Ace of Diamond feels like a gorgeous late nineties/early 2000s homage--fitting since, despite airing in 2013-2015, the manga originated in 2006 and it followed the art of the manga nicely. The color palettes are very beautiful and vibrant. I remarked more than once while watching it that it was clear that the artists cared for studying human anatomy, movement and realism (in comparison to how some battle shonen care more for looking cool.) The art is what drew me in to begin with and it never disappointed.  OST: I loved the OST so much. Frying-Pan did such an amazing job delivering gorgeous pieces of music. The beauty of it was just off the charts and went above and beyond to make fitting pieces for character themes, scenario specific pieces etc. Also the OPs by Tom H@ck and Glay were appropriately themed and got me pumped every time. I love the various endings also and their little character revealing bits. I like them all so much I never skipped them while watching.

[Favorite OP: Perfect Hero. Favorite ED: Cloud Nine. I listen to Cloud Nine literally every day.] Can I rewatch? Absolutely! Even knowing what’s going to happen, the emotional journey is worth it.  Would I recommend? 10/10. Even if you don’t like sports, this is a great one. It was my first sports anime and it has set the bar so very high.

So here we are. The final chapter of Haikyuu...

Excuse me for becoming an emotional mess down in the cut. I only got into the fandom very recently, but holy eff I got too attached to these volleyball idiots way too quickly...

So yeah, I did see a lot of spoilers over the week, but I tried to resist posting about them myself until the official Viz translation was posted. But I did have a lot of FEELS over them, aaaah-

Also, I have this particular track from the Haikyuu OST in mind while reading the finale and it really contributes to the FEELS. It’s called Itadeki no Keshiki- or, translated, The View From the Summit. And lemme tell you, just listening to it, even without reading the chapter, already broke my heart a little.

I highly recommend listening to this clip from the first Haikyuu stage show to accompany it. Fitting, not only because it was the FIRST stage show (which meant it portrayed the beginning of the manga)... but amongst those reciting the speech was Oikawa. THE FEELS!!

Final Fantasy Tactics / Final Fantasy Tactics: The War of the Lions (PS1/PSP)

Ahhh, the game that ages like fine wine <3 I love the story line, the characters and their development, the battle system (although confusing for a 7-year old), the everything!

I first played this game when I was 7. English isn’t my first language, I was having a hard time understanding a few dialogues and skills description. It was my cousin who helped me get through, she’s 4 years older than me. She doesn’t live in or near our house so she gave me a dictionary instead that translate a few English words to my native tongue to help me when she goes back to her hometown.

I remember getting stuck in Dorter and Wiegraf one-on-one for months. Being this is my first tactical RPG, I don’t know how to level up properly. That also includes the JP farming. When my cousin went on vacation in our house, that when she told me how.

What I loved in FFT the most is probably how “human” the characters are. We have Ramza Beoulve, a young man from a noble house of Beoulve. He’s raised with a status, behind high safe wall of Eagros Castle and was quite naive with how the world outside the wall function until their encounter with Milleuda that made him question if he’s doing the right thing or not. Over the course of the game, you will see him grow mature and wise but still keeping friends and family over other things. Then we have Delita Heiral, the commoner adopted in the House of Beoulve, Ramza’s trusted friend. He’s the person succumb to revenge on what happened to his only remaining biological family, his sister Tietra. He swore to never be a victim and be manipulated again. He also don’t want anyone else to become a “Tietra”. He wants to make Ivalice a fair and peaceful kingdom to both the nobles and the commoners. But when he reached the near of his goal, his want for revenge changed into want for power. And just how inevitable it is, wanting for power leads to corruption. He did never become a victim nor being manipulated but he’s the one doing it. Bonus: The day Ramza and Delita let go of their youthful thinking. This scene is also one of the strongest scene in FF series. Delita is set to what he wants if all else fails.

Another one, and probably the most human of them all, is Wiegraf Folles. A Knight succumbed by revenge and hatred towards the Order. He is the leader of Corpse Brigade, a group of commoner soldiers who helped during the Fifty Years War but weren’t paid. Now they are a group of soldiers, on par with the Northern and Southern Order of the Sky, who are against them. Despite them hating the Order, Wiegraf never resort of thievery and violence, as he wants Ivalice to be a peaceful kingdom too, until Gustav defied this and kidnapped Marquis Elmdore for ransom. All Wiegraf wants was for the group to be paid and recognized as one of the soldiers who saved Ivalice. The kidnapping that lead to Corpse Brigade’s demise but also his sister, Milleuda. Grieving for his sister’s death, blaming his self for not being able to save her and lacking the power to take revenge for her death, he took the only opportunity that stepped in his life. Taking the stone of Aries. His encounter once again with Ramza lead him to being wounded and near death. Losing all the hope for his vengeance, he took another opportunity that opened up, that is to be the host for the Lucavi Demon of Aries, Belias.

The War of the Lion, or the PSP remake of this gem, even made the game greater for me. Not only they added in game cutscenes and voice acting, but they also added my favorite character in the entire Final Fantasy series, The Leading Man ♥ (and yeah, he’s no thief, he’s my husband a sky pirate)

And just a year ago, FFRK released their very first FFT event. Of course, I cried again after hearing the OSTs playing. I also love the tiny detail DeNA added to that event. The dialogue between Ramza and Algus in Ziekden, the spell or skill incantations that was missing in the WotL, the battle background, the sprites, the everything! And with more upcoming FFT events, the details are getting more beautiful and more pleasing to the eyes of FFT fans. Here are a few detail that really pleased my soul:

“Get Away” by Seven O’Clock

Seven O’Clock has officially made a video featuring the newest member, Andy. Since Vaan’s departure, the group had released a song with the remaining five members. Now, they’ve welcomed a new member, Andy, who seems to be another vocalist. However, the MV left something to be desired and the group’s recent comebacks just haven’t been something I can truly enjoy. I’d easily give this comeback a 4/10 if there was a grading system.

Overall Sound

The song itself sound extremely nostalgic. You know those songs where companies will gather as many artists as possible to sing together for a good cause? Yeah, that’s what this sounds like. It can also be compared to an OST for a drama - loud, summer music but hard-to-hear lyrics that you may just plat in the background while characters shop. The music’s too loud, drowning out the vocals, and it doesn’t sound like most modern groups. Sometimes different is good, but I feel as though Seven O’Clock’s past two comebacks since signing their new company both sound too nostalgic and fail to fully realize the members’ potentials. Ultimately, the song doesn’t sound strong enough to stand on its own and it suffers because of that.

Don’t watch the MV if you get dizzy easily. The camera changes too fast and it feels as though the person behind the camera couldn’t stop moving. A still camera can do wonders for an MV, especially when you’re going for more of an upbeat, summery sound. You don’t want the viewer to be unable to watch because you couldn’t stay still.

I’ll be honest, going into the video, I didn’t realize that it was the firs MV with Andy. As such, my first thought was that it felt like a debut video. The usage of the members’ names in the video is a great way to introduce fans, but it felt extremely broken up due to how the video was edited. Additionally, the heavy filtering made the boys look white as can be in some shots and then orange as...well, an orange in others. I understand wanting to add a filter to adjust for any inconsistency in filming time, but there is such a thing as filtering too much. I honestly felt as though the video was done by an amateur. It didn’t do any of the boys justice and there wasn’t enough solo-time for each member for fans to really get a taste of who their bias could be. It’s vital that, if you’re presenting an MV as a “re-debut” in this sort of style that fans really get time to know and love the members. If SEVENTEEN can do it with Mansae and 13 members, Seven O’Clock can do it with six.

Lyrics Meaning

It’s a bit of a confusing mess, these lyrics. It seems to be a breakup song, which is fine. I want to say it’s about being conflicted when you see your ex and realizing you still have feelings for them. It’s not something that’s often talked about, but I don’t know if the lyrics really fit the song’s sound. A breakup song should sound a bit more pained or dark. Not like you’re on the beach with your significant other and the relationship has never been better. It conflicts, to me, and makes it a bit harder to really focus on the lyrics when hearing the song.

Choreography

I feel as though Seven O’Clock’s choreography doesn’t do justice for the members. There isn’t enough focus on individual ability like other groups have. The dances are nostalgic, just like their sound. It’s mostly synchronized moves with the singer in the front. There’s nothing to really pull the viewer in and engage them. For example, Monsta X’s dances usually draw me across the stage and force you to keep your eyes peeled because I don’t necessarily know where the next person to sing/rap will pop up from. KNK’s dances move around a lot and find a way to lead the viewer’s eyes to the person singing at the time without always keeping them center. Even M.O.N.T, which is a trio manages to mix things up so the members aren’t just doing the exact same thing together.

I’m not saying I want them to go crazy. I’m just saying, have the members get on their knees around the rapper or something once in a while. When you’re from a small company, you have to try that much harder to stand out. Choreography and the music both must be unique. If you’re making yourself sound retro, at least stand out in terms of the choreography. I’d like to give them the benefit of the doubt since they have been going through a lot and Andy is a brand new member, but I’d have liked to see things mixed up a bit.

I’d listen to this song if I was...

The most I can think is the same scene I mentioned earlier: sitting on a beach. It’s a summer sounding song. However, the lyrics don’t speak to me. If you don’t know any Korean, I’m sure you can listen without an issue. However, knowing the lyrics is half the love I get from music, which is why I’ll often search them up. As such, this song is a niche listen.

You might like this song if you like...

This song has a nostalgic sound to it. As such, older songs such as “Hello” by SHINee would be great. Older songs by B1A4, like “Beautiful Target.” I’d also say “1 2 3 4 5 I Love You” by the Bottom Blues, which is a Thai song (featured in 2Moons). Overall, though, I can’t think of any breakup-sounding songs with this sound, which makes it hard to suggest any that are similar.

Final Words

I wanted to see great things from this group when I first got into them. However, I feel as though their roster is changing too much for fans to keep track of them. It’s as if each music video is a new group or a fresh debut. It’s hard to form a lasting love for the members when things get mixed up.

Additionally, I’ve seen many fans agree that the group should have a darker concept for their videos, as it suits them better. When Seven O’Clock debuted, they had this dark concept that fans fell in love with. It’s what drew many fans in. I don’t think this bright concept suits the group and it ostracizes fans who originally fell in love with the group’s original concept at their old company.

I also want to say...they should have added another rapper, not another vocalist. 5 vocalists to 1 rapper is too uneven. Andy is adorable and I definitely want him to succeed with the rest, but I would have added another rapper in addition or instead. It only adds to the old school sound of the song. I understand there’s not replacing Vaan and it could be a gamble, but I feel as though it’s just as big of one to not add another rapper since Hangyeom either has to do twice as much rapping or risk having a song that just doesn’t sound balanced.

Release date May 24th 2018. DS post Mario and Luigi Broswers Inside Journey now on the 3DS. RPG style based gameplay, game takes place in Browser’s stomach. Browser Available 2019 Detective Pikachu – old cop style pikachu who loves coffee. Pokemon in the game’s story behvaing oddly. Available for pre purchase Available March 23rd 2018 Amiibo coming on the same day 3DS Remake of Luigi’s Mansion! The GameCube classic is now coming to the 3DS. The 3DS keeps on giving! New boss battle mode and map screens. Available this year. Not bad 3DS! Quickly got through it to see the Switch stuff too. Kirby Star Allies coming out next week. Characters such as King Dede and Metaknight can be played as via co-op play. More ”dream friends” will be added for free. Characters are from the older Kirby games. A ”dream come true” surely! Available March 16th. First update coming March 28. Free demo available by the way! Okami HD on Switch! Very suitable. Okami HD has always been compared with Zelda Twilight Princess. The Switch version allows touchscreen controls in handheld mode and motion controls in the TV mode. Available this summer. Sushi Striker The Way of Sushida. Food style game in unique setting where.. sushi is banned. Gameplay consists of matching sushi colors and eating them. Multiplayer mode available. Available June 8. Project Octopath more details. Two new main characters. Tressa who is a mechant sets off for adventure. Her unique ability is buying other items from townsfolk. Alfyn’s journey is to heal others. He has the ability to suss out info from townsfolk. All characters start off with an default job (Final Fantasy and DQ like) but can equip another one. Available July 13th 2018! Release date finally revealed. Pop up book, map, OST CD, replica coin included in special edition. Travis is back! Travis Strikes Again No More heroes. Action, racing and puzzle game styled. 7 different game types. Boss fight at the end of each game. Seems less bloody than before but gameplay looks intensive. Available this year. Dark Souls Switch – remaster of one of the best games of all time. Hopefully the remaster fixes the framerate issues as that was the game’s biggest issue. Before launch, a beta(?) is coming! Awesome. Solaire of Astoria Praise the Sun Amiibo! Not a fan of ambiibos but this is excellent. Available on May 25th. Reminder that gold points can now be used to get Switch discounts on the eshop. Mario Tennis Aces focused on now. More than 15 characters with different playstyles. Up to 4 players multi-player. Variety of shots available regarding gameplay. New features such as Zone Shot which allows motion controls to aim where to shoot. Rackets can be damaged and be broken. Instant KO if you have no more rackets. Perfect timing pass backs can avoid this. Slow motion movement available via Zone Speed. Energy gauge allows offense and defense tactics. Online play is available including tournaments. Standard match making. Participation bonus such as characters and skins. Motion controls possible via Swing Mode. Wow, quite the information loadout. Available June 22nd. Pre-launch online tournament coming up. Another beta test? Captain Toad Treasure Tracker being ported to Switch. I’m sure there will rumours about this one coming. New levels from Super Mario Odyssey such as New Dong City. Can be played with a friend via joy-cons. 3DS version coming even! Available July 13th. Undertale coming to Nintendo Switch – ”eventually” Crash on Switch! Perfect, works so well. I have not played it yet hoping it would come to the Switch so really pleased with this one. Available July 10. Puzzle Platformer suspense style. Looks really unique. Two seperate adventures, 8 chapters, story based on going through childhood fears. Complex puzzles and dynamic lightning for atmosphere. Available May 18th. South Park coming to Switch! Another prediction made correct. South Park The Fractured But Whole is a very succsefful RPG and fits very well on the Switch. All DLC needs to be bought seperately. Available April 24th. Hyrule Warriors Definite Edition – which was previously announced- now has a release. Available May 18th. New update for ARMS. A new tournament is available. Based in US and Canada, online battles, taking place March 8 to 18th. Finalists will continue on March 31st. Play for the game for free on the March 31st. Splatoon 2 update. Version 3.0 is coming. More than 100 pieces of new gear being added. More levels, 3 in total. Rank X, higher than S+, can now be achieved. Splatoon 3? New video from the developers… (I won’t change initial thoughts noted here!) Single player focused version of Splatoon it looks like. Yes, looks like it with different level designs and environments. Splatoon 2 Octo – DLC for Splatoon 2. Single player focused DLC coming. Play as new character ”Agent 8”. Wakes up with no memories in test facilities (Portal much?). Got to love the developer from the development team’s gestures… Available Summer 2018. And that’s it… nope, one more video! A lot of ink – another Splatoon announcement. NOPE, Smash Bros is coming to the Switch! Pretty clear that Splatoon characters will be joining the roster. Releasing in 2018. Well I must say, I got it completely wrong with my Diablo 3 prediction!
