So, I used the page this comic panel is on in another post to talk about Jason’s attempts to recruit his siblings, but I somehow managed to overlook this part.

So, Jason has somehow heard about Blockbuster, and through very secondhand information. Bruce certainly didn’t tell him, and I doubt Amy did either, so where did Jason even get this information? Presumably, police files. But the official BPD story is that Dick was an undercover officer who killed Blockbuster in the line of duty (or just contributed to his death, but the way the other cops talk about Tarantula makes it seem like she was facing unrelated charges.)

So, Jason might genuinely believe that Dick killed Blockbuster.

Worse, he thinks that the Blockbuster incident makes Dick a killer. And I think Dick would think that like recognizes like, and if Jason thinks he’s a killer then it must be true. Oof.

The only other information source I could see Jason having about this is Barbara, which…is honestly probably worse. And there’s some evidence to support that Jason knows Dick only stepped out of the way—he says “for a second” and doesn’t outright say Dick killed Blockbuster. But learning about this from Barbara would almost definitely come with a series of misunderstandings that never got cleaned up between Dick and Babs.

So, yeah, Jason knows some limited third-hand information about Blockbuster’s death, attempts to use it to relate to Dick, and accidentally ends up doing further damage to Dick’s self-image. If Dick ever tries to explain what happened to Jason, Jason will be like “oh yeah I know all about how you killed Blockbuster,” and that’s gotta put a damper on the conversation.

But on the plus side, we get “Dickie-Bird.” Jason should call Dick “Dickie-Bird” more in fanfiction, it’s gotta annoy the hell out of Dick.

Why does dev hate ved so much?

Also did ved have his own versions of dev’s au-pairs

No to the second part, actually! Ved lived a surprisingly quiet, humble life with his father Elad (who I’ll post some more info about in a different ask :3c)- he’s actually not even the prince of the anti fairies, Due to the fact that Elad simply isn’t that ambitious lol. As for the first part- Trust me, it is EARNED. The reason Dev’s hatred for his anti seems so blown out of proportion to everyone else is because Ved has INTENTIONALLY made it look like Dev hates him just for being an anti-fairy, to discredit anything Dev says to try and make Ved answer for the chaos he so loves causing.

(Dale is a WELL-KNOWN hater of anti-fairies, due to a certain experience with one named Vicky, so everyone just assumes that hatred was passed down, making Dev’s opinion very biased)

However, Because Dev is well aware he himself only PRETENDS to be mean as a defense mechanism , and actually cares very deeply for his friends and family, Dev can only assume that means Ved’s niceness is similarly fake, and he doesn’t really care about the wellbeing of others at ALL. Ved proves this to be true CONSTANTLY by harming and traumatizing bystanders of wishes- (always Indirectly enough to not break da rules) inevitably making Dev clean up his messes every single time. Aaaand As much as he hates it, Dev always does so, because if DEV messes up, he’s done with fairy godparenting for GOOD, and will have no choice but to crawl back to his dad (Perry is his “last chance” godkid, because he’s failed to help -or even just get along with- SO MANY in the short few years he’s been godparenting coughincludingIriscough)

Anyway, due to Dev and Ved’s mutual understanding of one another’s personalities (mostly through process of elimination tbfh) Dev is the ONLY fairy who has EVER seen Ved without his “mask”- something Ved has meticulously constructed to earn the trust of both faires and anti faires alike- saying and doing whatever he needs to in order to creep closer to his eventual goal.

But underneath all the fake niceness, all the goofy mannerisms, Ved has made it no secret to Dev specifically that he’s a MONSTER, and actively delights in the fact that no one will ever believe him.

Other headcanons I didn't really feel like drawing include (WARNING THEY ARE KIND OF STUPID AND YAPPER YAPPINGTON CORE SO YEAH⚠️⚠️👹👹)

It'd be pretty interesting if Daini had a damaged core (like protoman, but not as severe of course) this could have been a result of dangerous training or an extreme accident he never fully recovered from, either way I'd imagine it really stunts his energy output, so he's most likely very sleepy to compensate.

Aki has made a habit of gifting people the most random things, a really cool smooth rock? It's for you! Shiny marbled on the floor that are slightly scratched up? He thinks you'll like it! An extra edition of his favorite comic serious? He wants to be able to enjoy it with you! He's sweet like that, but it can sometimes get a little much.

Suna has probably grown to be a very good engineer / mechanic. She often helps Dr. Light with his inventions or fixes up Aki / Daini after rough battles (mini appreciates the help) of course she also uses her skills to upgrade her own armor, and often handles the tougher fights that Aki or Daini might struggle on, after all, nobody is expecting to be sliced into ribbons when facing two gun wielding children.

Once Daini starts something, he often has trouble stopping, so much so that if he often forgets to recharge and take a break, homework? Doesn't stop until it's all finished and the answers are correct (he will make sure), chores? The house will never look less than clean on his watch (his own room does not apply). You ask him to get something from the kitchen? He does it immediately, no questions asked.

Aki, on the other hand, is very forgetful about his responsibilities. He often puts them off until the very last moment and regrets it dearly. He doesn't do this on purpose, of course, but tell me, if you had to choose between playing your favorite video game VS doing homework, would you choose the homework? I don't think so. Because of this, Aki and Daini often bump heads about tidying up.

Suna CANNOT catch a break, she constantly has to be the head of reason whenever Daini and Aki bicker when eachother, she also might catch a few strayed herself if it's heated enough, but she has the verbal artillery to be able to snap back pretty quickly, so for the most part they don't test her. Sometimes she waits things out, othertimes she has to stop them from Lord of The Flies-ing each other off of a cliff (no pig head on a stick required) but like most sibling squabbles, everyone makes up and gets over it (unless it's over food, food thieves are never forgiven /j)

Capcom Museum Investigations Sketches

This is the 66th post in the Ace Attorney Investigations Collection Countdown: 15 days left until release!

Today's topic: concept art sketches from the Capcom Museum Ace Attorney Investigations Exhibit!

The Investigations exhibit on the Capcom Museum website has tons of amazing artworks, backgrounds, sketches, promotional material and even the old promotion video for Investigations! The exhibit itself might be closed by now (sadly) but you can still access all the art and stuff they posted including these sketches below. They're originally from the artbook but I had first seen them on the Capcom Museum website and they're lovely so I wanted to talk about them.

This one shows a bunch of concept work done for the life-size figurine of Miles for the Investigations promotion booth back then. The highlighted parts are considered to be particularly important for Miles to look like Miles, that includes the line between his eyebrows and the lock of hair standing out at the back of his head. It's often exactly these kinds of details that make characters suddenly look wrong if they're missing even if you don't actively notice them when they're there. I also love the image of Miles with just his waistcoat on, we've never seen him like that before! (Definitely gonna use this for future fanfic endeavours.)

The next two sketches are particular favourites of mine, they're from the Investigations main trio and I always love seeing them together! The first one shows them rushing to get somewhere (the scene of the crime, most likely). Miles is running in front, very focused and determined, followed by Gumshoe closely behind, with a more concerned look on his face. Kay looks like she's flying or jumping from somewhere above them, her arms stretched and her scarf flapping in the wind reminiscent of an action hero. It's a wonderfully dynamic image, even at the sketch stage, and I'd love to see a fully drawn and coloured version of this. It's amazing how all their personalities come through in such a simple action and how well their team dynamic comes across. Miles as the serious leader, Kay always rushing in headfirst as dramatically as possible and Gumshoe lacking a little behind but always there to support. So nice!

The second one shows them sitting on something (probably a bench) and, again, I love how their personalities and dynamic is expressed in just the way they're sitting! Miles is in the middle with his hands folded on his crossed legs and facing slightly upwards with a very serious expression like he's thinking about something particularly difficult to figure out. Kay is on his left fully croaching on the bench instead of sitting like she could jump up at any time, ready for action. She doesn't look quite as serious but still contemplative propping up her chin with her arm and looking off to the side. Gumshoe has his legs parallel to each other, his feet on the ground and his back straight, the perfect picture of how to sit on a bench. He looks completely relaxed with his hands in his lap and a happy smile on his face. Such a nice contrast between the three! I'd love to have this one fully drawn and coloured too but it's great in the sketch stage as well.

The last piece is a series of sketches done for the cute little comic that came with the Investigations 2 orchestra soundtrack (the final version with translation can be found here). Just from the sketches alone you can roughly tell what it's about, the intro is dramatic with Miles, Kay and Gumshoe all looking distressed, then the reveal that Kay and Gumshoe are wearing baseball gloves and hiding, to a final extremely rough sketch of Miles finding his broken King of Prosecutors' trophy with the culprit clearly being a baseball. Great little comic and the sketches already deliver so much! It's honestly amazing that Gumshoe would agree to playing catch in Miles' office considering he's the one who cleans and is so protective of it. Maybe he thought, in his naivety, that nothing would happen or that he could clean any mess they made before Miles returned... At least it was "only" the trophy that Miles isn't so attached to anyway but I can't imagine him being very happy about them playing ball games in his office 😅 Daily shenanigans of the Investigations crew!

Hello. I know this might sound dramatic, but I want you to know that you probably save my life tonight.

I was having a really bad day. My family doesn't understand me enough to care, and maybe my issue with my family is the reason why I found comfort in Batfam fics. Today, everything just got worse. My father yelled at me for something he didn't even know, I don't know why he even had the audacity to speak when he doesn't even know the matter, and now I can't speak and yell at his face that he's wrong because I am a child and not a parent, I would be considered "disrespectful" if I wanted to speak what is right and true.

I was really begging any Gods at that point to take me. I was thinking of ways to execute myself tonight. I was planning to starve myself tomorrow and ignore today's dinner. I was planning on searching what's "Metoprolol" is because growing up as a kid, I always think that "concern" is a form of love, and maybe if they saw my dead body tonight, maybe they'll cry because they love me. I know this is bad. I know this is inappropriate to say, but when I tried to atleast make myself feel better and decided to read Batfam fics again, I saw your new chapter of From Gold to Mold and it genuinely makes everything better. I didn't want to read Chapter 3 because I saw the comments that you left it with a cliffhanger, and I hate that, and decided to wait for the next chapter instead. Ever since I saw the new chapter, I actually ate dinner, because atleast I know there's still things in this world that makes me happy. When I saw your new chapter, I asked God, "Is this your way of comforting me?", and I want you to know that your work is a form of blessing for me. I started thanking God at that moment, and told myself that I also want to thank you.

I actually don't read Batman comics, or watch Batman. I never read or watch any DC movies before, but Batfam fics is about a family that I will always desire yet never really grasp. I wish for all Batfam authors to live the life they wanted.

I am very sorry for saying this, and straight up said that I was actually considering doing it. I am very aware that this is inappropriate but I really, really, really want to tell you that you save me. I know saying that a "fanfiction" save my life sounds ridiculous, but that's where I found my comfort in, and I would be willing to be ridicule at if it means showing what genuinely makes me happy. I will always love your works even if it means showing my lack of redamancy for my family, or even hatred if I have to admit. This doesn't mean that you are a start of my rebellion. I am only stating that you are a light in my times of darkness.

First of all, I’m glad you’re enjoying the series! When this idea popped into my head, I wasn’t sure if there would be many who’d actually enjoy it. With people like you, I’m inspired to put all that I have into From Gold to Mold! I hope my future work meets and exceeds all your expectations!

Second of all, I’m so sorry that you’re going through such a rough time in your life right now. Since you were brave to share a part of you for all to see, I’ll share something, too. About five years ago, my mother was a major junkie. With that, plus her narcissism, led her to divorcing my stepdad (who brought me out of my shell and made me a better version of myself) and moved us to my grandmother’s house after my grandfather died after battling lung cancer. Living with her was a nightmare, constantly walking around eggshells for fear of pissing her off, her stealing money from my grandmother, and yelling at everyone. She was always riding my ass to get a job just so she could take money from me. Early 2020, she was finally evicted and it’s just my grandmother and I living together.

She’s actually cleaned herself up and we enjoy a decent relationship.

So, while things look horrible and it may take a while, things do get better. I’m rooting for you.

KHRe Projects Updates #2

Making another update post because OCtober is over, yippeee!! I'm very proud of the art I've done this month and I think it's also the most I've drawn for an OCtober event. I hope next year I'll be able to draw even more and maybe even complete all 30 days.

And with that out of the way, I'll be jumping back into working 100% on my projects. I'll post less art this month (save for asks if inspo strikes) because I'll be working on them behind the scenes, so I'll mostly be an OC supporter this month and just catch up on everyone's OC stuff that I missed whenever I have a chill time hehehe

Anyway, here's my progress on them so far!

Wiki: I plan on doing a lot of major edits on the wiki this time. I have a few that's already just sitting by on the sandbox pages already. I'll do them topic by topic/page by page, so whenever I make a major update, I'll do a post about it here (or maybe a summary of wiki updates if it's way scattered).

Planned updates this month include adding pages for Yui and then Tsuna (if possible Reborn too! I know they're a package, I'll do my best lmao please don't shoot me, Reborn!). I also plan to add another section under Relationships > Appellations for KHRe-Occurence interactions!

Webcomic: We are so back on this one! For now my initial draft of the chapter order in terms of character debut is more or less finalized. For this first part, I decided to just cover character introductions/focus chapters for now, which I estimate to last for about 12-13 chapters (covering for 15 characters, mix of canon and OC).

I should be able to figure out where to go from that point while drawing chapters 1-13! Daily Life Arc is so important to me, I'm not skipping the good shit 😆💖✨ But I already do have a few more Daily Life Arcs in mind after that and a few mini-arcs.

In terms of assets, I'm just thankful I even managed to put together some 3d assets/references I can use for Namichuu. I also more or less have the whole school mapped. I'll be putting this information in the wiki as well, in case anyone wants to make use of it too. Now I kind of want to make a rough draft of a Namimori map hahaha

Because of this, that scene with Ryohei convincing Hibari to do the trial in the Arco Trials Arc became even more funnier to me lmao 🤣🤣

For target release, if we're just talking about Chapter 1 then definitely this November is doable. But then I lowkey want to get ahead till to around Chapter 3-5 too! I'll think about it more!

My even bigger stupidass problem is I also want to draw a webcomic that's Oniyanagi 1st Gen-centric, but I only have two hands so sjhfshvfgs Making comics is so fun ok??!! I just don't have enough time lmao

For the artstyle, I decided to just use the same brush for the comic I did with Kana and Myell's Entity. The edges for that are smooth enough while still having a pencil-like feel to it, so coloring with the paint bucket tool would be easier. I considered using the pencil brush I'm using for rough sketches right now because I'm faster with those, but yeah, the coloring. I'll also be doing a mostly "Don't look back, just keep drawing" approach, so I don't take 100 years for chapter 1. It won't be 100% clean, but maybe just decently not messy enough? Anyway, I'm still thinking of other ways to be faster at drawing, aside from just increasing my overall stamina 😭😭😭 (I get tired so easily). Time to start lifting Ein! 💪✨

In addition to the main story, watch out for any new KHRe-OCcurrence chapters that I might drop in between 🥰🥰🥰

MV: I'm working on 📺MV and should also finish it within 2-3 months while working on my other stuff (2 weeks if I mentally zoom in & obsess over it somehow). I have the vivid storyboard for the entire thing laid out in my brain now. I think finishing this will hype me up more to draw more webcomic stuff hahahaha You'll know when you see it.

I'm just really super thankful there are people who like my original stuff and interact with me here sfhdvhfvsvf and on the flipside, I'm also super thankful that people share their original stuff with me as well (or at least where I can see!). It takes a lot of courage to share your original works out in public, so it's practically SSR-rank content for me.

I have a few oc-related project/posts (even if it's not khr-related) that I have bookmarked as well, I'll do my best to check them out this month as well! Episode 20 - My Friend Bashi (Part 1)

We had reached the milestone of 20 episodes, and I want to sincerely thank the readers for sticking with me so far. :)

I also have a small announcement: after finishing liveblogging this episode, I will take a very small break from the show to do some reading of articles and comics instead.

It's starting to feel awkward - constantly referencing some canon materials without reviewing them on this blog proper, y'know? I originally planned to do this all at once, before the movie, but I think it'll be more fun to do it in multiple reading breaks, during the show.

So many kids in this city, and Joris is friends with none of them. Except for Tatak.

All analysis and plot leaves my body as I think about how much Kerubim cares about Joris.

He's really not perfect, but no matter how much I joke about his failures, he really does care and try his best.

He's too nice for me to actually make fun of in any serious manner.

It's very nice to see the more down-low, bittersweet moments of parenting and childhood portrayed. It's also nice that it's just between the two of them, without Simone.

I love her, but it's very cute to see just Joris and Kerubim, and how they act when they're alone together.

I think that it's interesting, that even at 7yo, Joris is already at the... "this one social interaction was a disaster, and it's over, just irredeemably over"-level overthinking about relationships.

Perhaps it's knowing that for Kerubim it, often times, was like that. Kerubim did inspire very many people to either hate him with passion, or leave him.

Perhaps it's the fact that, besides Kerubim, Kerubim's friends, and Simone, he doesn't have a family; and besides Tatak, he doesn't seem to have any friends: and that makes him struggle with the idea of losing relationships.

Keke I will be real, I think Tatak is his only friend in general.

...Man. I am making myself sad by writing these things.

I don't think Joris ever had good social skills in his life. Just issues after issues.

As I've said in the previous posts, both Keke and Joris have an issue with needing to be liked always all the time, and the way it makes them do things to seem Cool and Awesome. Even if Joris has this issue in a very introverted way.

It might just be normal kids stuff, but it does add a certain flair to the things we see him do as an adult, if one accepts the idea he's always been like this.

Kerubim's way of connecting to others is to draw from his own experiences, and compare them. It's a more... mature way of cheering up people, than just saying "it gets easier!" like he used to.

For all his faults, Kerubim has grown emotionally from his youth. But it can be a thin line between making everything about yourself, and trying to say that it gets better from experience.

Even so, Joris cares a lot about his experiences and life (cough cough. the Lore), so it works for them, both as a way to distract him and to cheer him up. Kerubim knows this, it's his go-to technique.

Anyway.

I think Kerubim either vastly overestimates the depth of what happened here (I highly doubt Ecaflip is giving him tasks because he's "the best"), or he is lying to Joris, because "I spent my whole childhood afraid that my father, who is a living god, would eat me Zeus-style, because of shit like cleaning the toilets badly or not delivering the fish on time." isn't a nice story.

This is exactly what I'm talking about.

A small aside: according to The Wheel Of Destiny #8 Kerubim Crepin (which will be one of the things I liveblog during the Reading Break), Bashi and Kerubim became friends before the events of episode 3, Strich Hunt.

It makes a lot of sense, because before the events of that episode, Ecaflip had... a very rough way of treating and speaking to Kerubim. Even if he had a soft spot for him, enough to save him (and then manipulate him) during said Wheel of Destiny article, I think Kerubim only truly cemented himself as Ecaflip's most favourite in the Strich Hunt episode.

Also, considering the fact that in Wheel of Destiny, little Bashi reports to knowing and strongly disliking Atcham, it's safe to say that in this episode we have a confirmed instance of Atcham being canonically present and simply not mentioned.

...keke sure is the guy who says "im the last living crepin. laugh" while having a brother. insane.

I yet again want to gush about the portrayal of relationships in this show.

I think all of us can relate to meeting someone, and not thinking much, — not yet knowing that they will turn out to be one of the coolest people you've ever met.

Anyway, tangent incoming.

One thing that's interesting to me, is that Kerubim is never depicted as having friends in the temple. From what we see, he spends most of the time alone, or with Ecaflip.

The reasons may be:

He is Ecaflip's favorite. He had important tasks from the moment he joined the temple. It alienated people.

He was Atcham's brother. Kids are judgemental, and Atcham is a perfect bullying target. Chances are, they didn't like him due to the association.

He came in very mentally ill and unsociable, due to, y'know, being orphaned, and never managed to make friends because the impression that he's "the sad mentally ill kid" stayed.

No wonder that he got anxious around three people, and then immediately trusted them when they were nice to him.

He probably hadn't had anyone be nice to him in ages. Or, like, acknowledge him too much, at the very least.

I won't elaborate on how I think Atcham was treated in the temple lest I fucking scare you, (Something-something, literally catboy Rule of Rose,) but I will say that, just like Atcham is still violently mentally ill due to whatever happened to him, Kerubim's experiences with loneliness and alienation as a child most likely fueled his dishonesty and attention-seeking behaviours as an adult.

So I understand why, even though Bashi kinda sucks, Kerubim is so broken up about losing him. There's a lot more tragedy to this than one can first see.

It was a very important moment for Kerubim to finally have a person in his life that wasn't his father (who constantly threatened to fucking eat him), one of the kids who either disliked him or were too intimidated to talk to him, one of the random monks, or his severely mentally ill brother (who fucking hated him.)

He was his first friend.

And for the record, I know the comic is rough and probably not terribly clear on its own, as it was very gratuitously just me rolling in my idiot mud. The context & extended backstory: Two brothers, Cal and Marek. Cal is the older brother. Marek joined Backdraft and was disowned by their mother. Cal also doesn't approve. Marek is not terribly happy about losing out on what very small family he has, so really keeps bugging Cal to join Backdraft also. It would also objectively benefit Cal to do so, as he operates very roughly and is under the protection of no groups, so frequently is robbed/ripped off. He is extremely stressed and has a drug problem, but still thinks he's better off than Marek. Marek has a longtime girlfriend/spouse that also did not approve of Marek joining the Backdraft, but the stability it brought to their lives really couldn't be argued with. In my Zi canon, having children is a very deliberate choice, and it can actually be very difficult for couples to get pregnant. So Marek is going to be a father and is excited about it, and wants to tell Cal. Cal is also genuinely excited because he knows their mother wanted grandkids, BUT... well, reality sucks. Marek knew that Cal was not doing well, but remained unable to convince Cal to come along. Marek quickly gained a reputation within Backdraft, as the "Wild Dog." He was very successful. One of the many things Backdraft does is deal with drugs and drug money. However, as with other things, they pride themselves on providing high-quality stuff to rich clientele; they are very derisive of and destructive towards other dealers, especially who might infringe. Marek happened to overhear/be part of a convo about a specific supplier being dealt with. But Marek was concerned as it was likely someone Cal was in contact with; he was right, and Cal had OD'd. Marek had fortunately been able to save Cal, who knew he'd Disappointed His Brother and fucked up. Once Cal also joined Backdraft, he got clean because he had support, and was able to actually engage his whole brain, dramatically improving his outlook. He tried to get his mother to see reason and understand that BD was a net positive for both him and Marek, but she refused and disowned them both. Such being the strife BD regularly creates for people on Zi. Several years later Marek was killed during a battle. Cal lost his brother and any kind of positive relationship with Marek's wife. He'd been disowned by his mom, and he had to deal with the cognitive dissonance of both having everything given to him - and taken away from him - by Backdraft. Such was life. It's been a long time and that's just how things are. He doesn't want to worry or think about it. He tells himself it doesn't matter. He's a fucking liar.

I have no idea why anyone would bother reading this but, well. accidentally OCs and all. even more side-notes: probably not good for you to work on some parts of Zoids without some stripe of PPE (looking directly at Layon and Brad also) drugs on Zi aren't just 1::1 drugs that we'd know about. Some of them might share names out of habit, but picture the majority as compounds specific to Zi. and probably having something to do with metals, salts, and REALLY fucking you up. I don't know or have the specifics worked out so don't @ me, but I'll make some new shit up if I need to.

It's Webcomic Day and everyone on Bluesky is sharing their comics process, so I thought I'd share mine here too, especially because I can get more into detail here!

Whenever I'm writing a long-form comic, I always start with a script, usually using a TV script as my default because it's easier for me to check my pacing when I'm looking at the story through a "TV seasons, episodes, etc" format than a webcomic format (because webcomics are so variable!) So I spent about 3.5 years just scripting the entirety of a Flair of Fate as TV episodes before then converting those TV episodes into comic scripts so I could break down the story.

My next step is a rough sketch and the lettering laid out using rough bubbles and blocks. I need the lettering in early so I can make sure the story is all still visible with the words in place and make sure the panels aren't too crowded.

Step 3 is a clean sketch, but that clean sketch usually ends up merging into my line art, so I didn't have a layer for that available haha. Then I go over that clean sketch, thicken the lines to amplify the line weight in inks, and add color.

A Flair of Fate makes for an especially complex process because for every scene, I pick a new color palette based on what's happening with the POV character.

Like the story actually starts in full color here, but then after Javi (the MC)'s dad dies, the color gets bleached out.

And the color only starts to return when he meets his idol and embarks on his grand adventure to becoming a superhero.

So all that's to say that the color stage is actually a really complex part of the process because I'm always weighing what changes in Javi's life might bring more color into his world, and depending on what characters are present, and stuff like that, it might change entirely because he's no longer the POV. And then, of course, once I set a certain mood color, I have to adjust all the other colors accordingly to keep things accurate. It's a lot, but also very fun!

So, this web series has so far been one long storyline by Derek Landy (now, officially on the shit list), with a few different artists: Marcio Fiorito, Phillip Sevy & Davide Tinto. The colourists were Erick Arciniega at first, and then Fer Sifuentes-Sujo took over. The final chunk of this series is essentially alternating between Fiorito and Tinto.

So, lets talk about the art first.

You would not have guessed that the colourist was the same each week, given how Fiorito's Wanda looked a helluva lot whiter than Tinto's.

Honestly Fiorito's art was just not great. Sorry but it had a lot of pretty rough moments:

Although a few nicer bits here and there. I liked this Sam, for example:

Honestly it feels like it was produced under rushed circumstances.

I actually made an edit of Sevy's Wanda, and yeah I think he did better than the other two.

But, by far the funniest part of the whole thing is how Fiorito would draw Sam clean shaven (which is, imo, correct for 616 Sam) and Tinto would draw him with a beard. And not even a good beard. So, Sam would be starting a conversation with no beard and ending it with one. Staggering. How does this happen? I'd like to imagine that both artists knew this was a thing but were each too stubborn to change.

The Plot:

I don't care it was fine whatever. Purple space aliens.

The Sam:

Early on in this saga, Sam gets the shit beaten out of him by one of the extra tough aliens (a Fear Teacher). This goes on for a really long time. Seriously, you're just scrolling and scrolling for pages watching him get brutalised.

Now, this is pretty bad. In general, I actually have a fairly high tolerance for violence in fiction, and, in general, I am often the one saying (or at least thinking) "stop complaining about bad things happening to characters you like. it's part of the story, it will lead somewhere" so hopefully it's clear that when I say this felt like too much, I really do mean something by it. The proportion of the comic taken up with this was way too high, even if it had paid off in some narrative way.

It didn't, though.

Both during the beatdown and a few times in the subsequent issues, we get dialogue about how Sam is a less formidable fighter than the other avengers. How he's just some guy and doesn't stack up to them. How he and t'challa can't breathe in space (and, like, neither can Tony but go off). It feels very deliberate and honestly kind of tiring, but you would think it was leading to something, right?

Why put this extensive beat down and all this dialogue about Sam's supposed inferiority into the comic if you're not building to something?

The obvious thing to think here is that this story is set in 616, so Sam is absolutely not just some human dude with no powers. He has telepathic powers. He is very much a special little guy. So, you might think that this was how this was going to pay off. That he'd use his abilities in some unexpected way, showing his worth even if he doesn't shoot lasers.

That doesn't happen, though. I don't think Landy knows that Sam isn't human.

The other option, and what I think (very charitably) Landy was trying to do, was show Sam being Mr Diplomat, and talking to the aliens and that's how he's useful. He gets healed in a magical space healing tube for a bit, then is the main guy who talks to the aliens throughout. There are two problems with this.

The first problem is that Landy's Sam just feels like Steve. And not even a good Steve, like, a very bland version of Steve. Sam's personality is not present when he's talking to the aliens. He's all "sir" and "ma'am" and this very formal "military guy being diplomatic" thing, and that is not 616 Sam. He's a talker, yes. He's empathetic and willing to hear people out, but he's not a soldier, he's not a politician or a diplomat or anything like that. And he's funnier, more brazen. He'd be willing to insult the aliens on purpose, is my point. Landy is hardly the first writer to deliver the blandest possible mischaracterisation of Sam, but it's annoying every time and I think we tolerate it too much.

The second problem, is that Landy does not seem willing to commit to actually having Sam succeed. Sam's job is to be the guy who talks politics to the aliens. Unless it's an important moment or a cool, righteous hero line, then Carol has to say it.

Seriously, that's what happens. Sam's function is to provide exposition, and to vaguely endanger himself in ways that have no consequence. Then, he steps aside to let Carol deliver any and all important dialogue including righteous political shit that surely, surely, you would give to the literal captain america character? No?

So, if the intent was to resolve this by saying Sam adds value through his "talking to people about politics and idealism" skills, then that intention never made it to the final page.

No, what we get is a story that emphasises how much the writer thinks Sam is useless and is worse than everyone else. He just says it over and over again and has an alien beat the shit out of him.

Right at the end of the penultimate issue, Sam comes face to face with a Fear Teacher (I believe the same one who nearly killed him). You would have thought that this would prompt a second fight between them, this time Sam wins, showing that he is, in fact, an impressive super hero in his own right. But no. Instead, in the final issue we cut to Sam already fleeing down a corridor away from the guy.

In case you were curious, the answer to whether Clutch actually successfully manipulated anyone in the comics is a definite ‘yes’ with the caveat that almost none of them are for very long, as far as I can remember. I actually find it kind of funny how there isn’t really any named character to whom his villain reveal in the current arc comes as a particular surprise, except maybe Lanolin and Sonic (neither of whom have been shown getting directly manipulated by him per say)

To briefly go through them all at the top of my head:

Rouge and Amy (during the Chao Races arc) – neither of them trust him as far as they can throw him right from the start, and Rouge doesn’t fall for his attempts to privately bribe her either

Jewel – was duped pretty good at first, but is also shown looking suspicious about things very early on, and doesn’t take long to catch on to him taking control of the ship. For some reason, Clutch just lets her to freely walk away from the conversation where he reveals his malicious takeover to her, giving her ample opportunity to warn the Diamond Cutters

Nite and Don (former of whom is the announcer for the Sweepstakes in case you didn’t know) – have been wise to the fact Clutch is up to no good from the start because they’re friends with the Chaotix, who have been investigating his company off-panel this entire time

Mimic – was manipulated in the sense that Clutch used his desire for revenge against Tangle and Whisper to get him on board. However he is shown being kind of wary of Clutch when he goes on a diatribe about how much he hates Sonic, and so promptly attempts to betray him by ditching at the first sign of Clutch’s plan falling apart, though he’s interrupted before he can go through with it (by the Diamond Cutters, not Clutch)

Surge and Kit – probably the case that has the most weight, besides Jewel maybe? Brought on board by Clutch promising them information he probably doesn’t have about their pasts. Very shortly afterward they try to quit, but Clutch blackmails them into staying on (though funnily enough the blackmail has nothing to with the information they supposedly wanted in the first place, and that thread hasn’t been brought up since). After Surge has an emotional breakdown at being controlled by him, they successfully execute a plan to betray him

Rough and Tumble – are manipulated successfully and betrayed by Clutch, but also they’re dumb hired henchmen so I personally barely even count them

The Diamond Cutters – aren’t technically manipulated by him directly, but are working as a part of the Clean Sweep/Restoration partnership so I counted them to be generous. Tangle and Whisper are initially unaware of any plot, but once they witness Sonic’s disguise slip they realise something’s up and secretly meet with Jewel, who tells them about Clutch. (Lanolin is deliberately kept in the dark because Tangle is afraid of how she’d react, especially to the reveal Sonic is the one who’s been interfering with the Sweepstakes events.)

To be fair, it’s inevitable that eventually that most, if not all of the characters Clutch had been deceiving would have the truth revealed to them by the end, and there’s only one issue left. But in my opinion, if this arc is supposed to give the impression that Clutch is great at reading people and using that skill to keep his enemies none the wiser and his henchmen in line, then it hasn't done a very good job. He might be talented at sniffing out weaknesses to use as an initial hook, but he is demonstrably incapable of keeping anyone's trust or loyalty for very long. His plans all fail so spectacularly that the actual threat the heroes will have to deal with going into the finale is basically self-inflicted lol

Yeah, that's also my thoughts when I read those examples. Wasn't there also a thing about Operation Clean Sweep causing a lot of global pollution that the Restoration, being the organisation that it is, reasonably should have noticed? I saw something like that come by, but it might also have been Eggman's enterprises; man loves himself some good pollution, after all. But regardless, that's quite a few examples that indeed show well that Clutch is... not doing a very good job being so masterful at manipulating, haha!

And to be quite honest... I think all this chalks up one of the reasons why I stopped keeping up with IDW last year. To me, the characters are uninteresting, the payoff feels lame, and it takes way too long to get to it. Clutch manages to manipulate someone? Cool! ...For three seconds and then his cover is already blown. And then he casually blows Mimic's cover on (I believe) page 2 of the most recent issue (as it was shown in the previews), after we've been dragging the Duo plot along for literally over a year. For a master manipulator, Clutch is just really not showing that off well, I conclude while reading all the above: if Clutch just lets Jewel walk away freely to go snitch after revealing his master plan, and if Surge and Kit are blackmailed not by the information they wanted but something else entirely and then just immediately betray him, and if Lanolin is kept in the dark because she might put Sonic of all people in danger (who, when in-character, would not take her shit at all), my "bad writing" senses are tingling tremendously. Indeed, you are 100% correct in that Clutch's plan would fall through in the end; the heroes win in the end, after all. But the way in which we're getting to that end has yet to catch my attention anew, other than what I see come by on my dash.

Sorry, this turned into my thoughts on the comics as basically an outsider just watching through a window, haha. Thanks for the explanation!🍀 To bring it back to Silver, I guess the conclusion here is that even if Clutch managed to make him believe some falsehood, it'd come undone immediately again. But I like to think Silver would be most suspicious of him anyway, and if we're going chronologically along with the comics, I presume the whole Restoration would reasonably never trust Clutch again, including him. So he's safe!

(Clutch meanwhile is not, because I just recalled he abused a bunch of Chao and put them in a cage. So Silver is coming for him and his days are numbered👀)

This Week In "Time & Again" #21: The Storyboard Is Done! The Further Adventure Awaits

So far - and that is indeed final for my paper sketching - the storyboard of Chapter 6 consists of 54 pages. Of course, not counting any framing material such as the cover arts as well as any bonus materials, it's roughly 20 pages longer than Chapter 3 that's been the biggest chapter up to this day.

This is massive, let me tell you. Especially massive when remembered that it's done virtually by one person alone.

Since my plan is so grand, and, unfortunately, there are no reliably working AI tools that might've sped up the colouring and/or sketching for the final product, AND with the progress hindering factors such as life outside art 🤣, the work might sprawl out within time and space. I am ready for it. Alles ist gewiß in Ordnung. I am very well aware of the amount of work that lies ahead of me, and I will not cancel my plans because of any possible oversights (because I have none 😁). As I said before, I am very committed, and no less determined.

What I am aiming at doing however is to try and shrink it to no more than 50 pages (which will make approximately 25 pages per part, for Chapter 6, just as Chapter 3, will be also split into two parts). That will be done through trial and error and perfection of the panel placement on every page. This is gonna be a headache - but it will be very well worth it 😁. Time for me to explore the new horizons after all - that's something I was willing to do for a long time. Now even stronger than before.

I foresee Chapter 6 to be a slap in the face, a hit with a frying pan, a loud squeak of a kazoo right into one's ear. It should be - and will be if done right (and I already put A LOT of thought into how to execute it properly!) - one of the most remarkable chapters of "Time & Again". It's been like that in my mind ever since I wrote the draft for the chapter. It's a daring experiment - and of course and selbstverständlich - it's not gonna be for everyone. It will not become your average comic read for your average relaxing after-work comic reading evening 😁

I've never talked about it before, but I always sketch the storyboard prior my work on the panels arrangement page by page in Inkscape, because I want to see the full picture and how the story unfolds as a whole. One could call it a rough draft of the entire chapter. Once I'm satisfied with my approximate storyboard sketch, I start to work on transferring my sketched ideas to Inkscape page by page, to create mock-ups as well as final arrangements. Of course, as I keep working on it, the things might get altered and/or swapped.

There are currently two primary objectives on my list of artistic things to work on for "Time & Again".

The first one is, of course, just keeping up working on the chapter itself. Since the storyboard is done, I will get to the panel and text arrangement as soon as my editor-in-chef returns back to me. Right on.

The second objective is revolved around a certain real life event that I am 85% prepared for already. Unfortunately, that objective includes a series of side quests that are advised to be completed in order to get the "total completionist" medal. Earlier I was thinking about releasing the "Clean Cut Editions" of all the previous chapters by the end of summer - but alas, trying to balance out all the activities, with the amount of work on Chapter 6 as well as some real life endeavours, I simply don't have time to finish it all up until the end of August. It's in my best interest though to prepare it by mid-October. Which clashes with my primary objective to work on Chapter 6 - and that chapter is already a witch's brew by default, let me tell you!.. But I'm trying to juggle with my time and resources as best as I could, so I foresee myself coming up with certain resolutions.

In the meantime, while my editor-in-chef is still working on ridding my script of shameful typos that I might've missed due to having to re-read and meticulously refine the same parts of the text 50 times in total until my focus and brain are both a mush, I will most likely start working on the cover artworks and promo arts. And the cover arts will contain references to a certain famous franchise that the readers with highly inquisitive minds have, indubitably, already noticed the hints at earlier 😉 (dammit internet, I cannot find the screenshots from neither Bloodborne or Dark Souls games that say "inquisitiveness ahead" although we've seen them numerous times when playing)

P.S. ... suddenly, it finally hit me: Oktoberfest is nearing. Which makes me wonder why, throughout all these years that I've spent with Lothar's presence in my life, I have never ever - not a single time, not once - drawn him all dressed up and excited about that traditional German festivity. Instead, for some reason I've grown really accustomed to drawing him Halloween-style numerous times. I even had an old artwork portraying him wearing a skeleton onesie in the company of Freia and Fjolvarr... which is very odd for him to say the least (not odd though considering how much I love mocking at that individual, because he deserves that, imo). Perhaps, the answer to that question lies ahead of us in Chapter 6, for it will shed light on Lothar's past and his peculiar relationship with his motherland. But canon or non-canon - I think that still might be a fun idea to draw something Oktoberfest oriented one of these years 😁🍻

Process talk happening under the cut!

I won't speak too much on the characters, since I've had them for a while before I made this comic (the little three-eyed goober I sometimes call Gwen for simplicity was one of my first characters ever), but do note that Fortune and Gwen weren't originally intended to be in one storyline? It's just that I preferred Fortune by far and thought it'd be sad to let an older character disappear (none of my other characters were suitable since they're extremely human and I wanted this to feel new). SO I MADE A REDESIGN.

FOUR YEARS.

Anyways, I'm sure you can see that I already placed them in the desert the comic takes place, because I was VERY sure of the aesthetic I wanted for Fortune and the world they live in, so I just.. Bent around some aesthetics to make it fit!

The next step in my process is to create some "moments", by which I mean making drawings of all the things I would like to see happen in my comic. This also helps out a great deal with thumbnailing, because I can just use the moments I already drew as a timeline. Assuming I can use all of them.

So while this was just me throwing pictures I was coming up with in my head with no correlation except for the very clear aesthetic, you can see where these shots will place later in the story. I was mostly looking for scenes that would stick out visually, like Fortune casting that shadow.

At this point in the comic makening, I have to actually string together what I want to happen in this little story, so.. Thumbnail time!

I use the moments I created previously because I can transform them as must as I like, even though they're already there and done, like building blocks.

I like to do one step through every page, to make sure that the end result looks consistent, meaning that I do lineart for every page before I put base colours into every page, etc.. I only rarely fully sketch out elements again and I usually just jump straight to lineart from the enlarged thumbnails, but I will do a second sketch if the shot is particularly challenging to me.

When the lineart is done, I go back through everything and put black shaped where I want stark shading to be, I just prefer the way it looks. I shade with the gouache brush in Clip Studio, because I like the texture a lot more than something that's clean.

THEN I go and hand-letter everything. Like with drawings, I have a rough idea of what I want for the dialogue, but the real writing happens on the page. Ironically, I sketch this part out before I go in for real.

And just like that. BOOM.

I obviously skipped some deets that might not be that interesting, not that I'd mind getting back into talking about it. I think I still have a good idea of how this comic came to be, at least.

A 9-page comic I made earlier this year about two characters I don't draw that much otherwise. This comic is just meant to be a concise snippet of this world they're in, and I had great fun making a full-colour comic like this!

I might reblog this with some additional drawings to show off my process, but I'm still on the fence about whether or not that's interesting.
