Weirdly SoC fandom does talk about Jesper's gambling addiction but seems to forget about the fact that he was an alcoholic. Maybe because it's mentioned only a couple times by Kaz and Inej. I don't think he was badly addicted to alcohol, it might have been used as an alternative for gambling, maybe it was something he struggled with but was ashamed of, considering that it's mentioned only by his closest people.
It also hits more when you realize that Jes probably went back to the bottle during the first half of CK, because of the judgment, then because of Colm's appearance, and also because he couldn't go to gambling dens. It actually may be the reason why Mattias points out that sickness could be different, implying his addictions and mental health. Fjerdan has known Jesper for a month (and known is a really strong word, while Mattias talks a lot to Inej or argues with Kaz, he rarely talks with Jesper, so it is hard to call that knowing), while he couldn't have witness Jesper's gambling addiction, he could've noticed his alcohol addiction or mental health issues on the "black veil".

pathetic isn’t really a word I‘d use for colin bridgerton. simon rather dying than marrying daphne was pathetic. anthony going through with marrying edwina until SHE mustered the courage to call everything off was pathetic.
colin contemplating his feelings, calling out his male acquaintances for their chauvinism, seeking advice from his mother and then immediately taking action and putting himself out there without even knowing if his feelings are reciprocated is the complete opposite of pathetic. that requires a whole lot of bravery.

Simon’s home.
Which means he’s glued to your side.
You wouldn’t have it any other way.
The two of you are in a local bookstore, the shop having caught your eye while out on a stroll together, each of you going to your respective shelves to find your preferred genres.
Simon grabs the first novel he thinks sounds interesting, quickly snatching the book by its spine so that he can cross the few steps back to your side.
His eyebrows furrow when he notices how closely you’re holding a book up to your face, your own eyes squinting at the back cover.
“Havin’ trouble there, love?” He asks as he approaches.
“Can’t believe I let myself run out of contact lenses.” You reply, trying your best to decipher the blur of black ink on the pages.
“Could’ve worn your glasses.” He retorts, something he’d already suggested more than once since you ran out of your contacts and had to order new ones.
“You know I only like wearing them at home.”
“But you’re so cute in ‘em.”
“Yeah well, you’re the only one who thinks so.” You mumble under your breath, though Simon hears it of course, the crease in his brow deepening.
“Wha’s that supposed to mean?” He gruffs out.
“I just got teased a bit in school was all Si, typical kid stuff. Just stuck with me I guess, but it’s fine, I have my contact lenses.” You explain to him.
Simon considers your words for a moment, the gears evidently turning in his head, muscular arms crossed over his large chest.
“And do we know where these fuckin’ tossers are at now?”
“Oh my god Simon, don’t-”
“Have we got any names to work with?”
“That is not-”
“Any addresses?”
“You are not about to-”
“Pictures?”
“I was like ten years old-”
“S’alright lovie, we’ll dig up your yearbooks when we get home.” He simply says, plucking your book from your hands and heading towards the register to pay.

Kaz and Jesper: the bad guardianship choices, failed protections and acceptance.
Both Jesper’s and Kaz’s stories are about protection and how it failed due to bad choices.
While we all know about Jordie and how he’d failed Kaz, we somehow forget about Colm’s bad choices after Aditi’s death.
The reason for that might be how Jesper describes his father in his memories, he focuses on his grief and completely leaves out how his prejudices and fears get the better of him. And while Colm is a good parent, just like Jordie is a good brother, he makes a horrible mistake of trying to “unmake” Jesper of being a grisha(I'm really bad at explaining, it's supposed to make sense), while trying to protect him. He’s afraid of grisha powers just like many people on the Wondering Island, and seeing his wife dead because of her powers might’ve been the straw that broke the camel’s back. Jesper tells us how his father tried to make him not use his powers, he didn’t send him to Ravka to learn, he made Jesper promise him he was never to use his power. Colm is partially the reason Jesper is so afraid of people knowing that he’s a grisha. He is distant from other grisha and doesn’t portray himself as such.
And we actually see that Colm knows about his mistakes and regrets them:
“And it’s my fault he is the way he is. I was trying to protect him, but maybe I saddled him with something worse than all the dangers I saw lurking out there.” Even in the weak morning light trickling through the bakery’s window, Wylan could see how weary Colm looked. “I made some big mistakes.” Crooked Kingdom: chapter 31 - Wylan.
Their stories are about acceptance too.
While Kaz after his brother’s death believes that love and attachment are dangerous, Jesper distances himself from grisha. We see them both accept those things in the end, (at least partially) but it still doesn’t change that they both had that.
Anyway, it's hard to judge most of the Crow parents as most of them who have parents(good ones) forget or don't pay much attention to their wrongs because they feel guilt, shame, or focus on other stuff. With Kaz, we can see that only because he resents his brother. But Jesper is not focusing on those things much.
