#dracula daily#dracula#re: dracula#may 18th#it's going to be all ooc after this tag on this post so feel free to ignore as i babble on about graduation and breathy mention mental heal#i graduated high school yesterday#which feels completely wild because their was a point in my life where i thought i wouldn't ever see it due to some mental health stuff#it just feels so serial to be here and be getting ready for college come fall#dracula daily has been with me for most of highschool#i first entered the fandom just after my sophomore year when i made my first tumblr account#i read it every day during lunch junior year when i had no friends with the same lunch hour#it's meant a lot to me and will always be connected to a certain time in my life#highschool wasn't great but i had some amazing teachers and made friends i hope to keep for the rest of my life#thank you too all of you lovely dracula people for making me smile all these years#i'm excited to keep reading and making silly jokes as i head into the world

Right. This has been a vampire thing since *Dracula* Dracula. For some reason that's so easy to forget.
#I think I know the reason actually it's because iconic pop culture monsters kind of get de-fanged (heh) in their ubiquity#Like you get to a point where even children are familiar with the archetype and ofc you aren't showing them the version with all the detail#So if you have a horror icon that ''everyone'' recognizes then most peoples' first exposure to them would be the kiddie-safe version.#Dracula#Dracula Daily#lit#lit analysis#Look it's been a while since I've read Dracula okay? Epistolary novels are not my favorite format.#The real-time gimmick is doing a lot to make that writing style feel fun for me to engage with instead of just annoying.

Bro it’s almost 2am and i have like 4 sound at once but only 2 of them are external and djwisjakdn
Like there’s a storm so there’s rain and the wind is blending with the white noise machine i got a while back nice
But then i have two clips out of nowhere
One is keanu reeves in dracula going “I know where the bastard sleeps [something something] cairfax abbey” in a really forced british accent
The other is susie in deltarune going “oo french fry :) on the *freaking* ground”

Yeah actually I'm a little annoyed by that vampire video it's not even that wrong it just doesn't make sense to me...(Person who has read numerous academic publications on vampires for fun).
#.txt#okay i said for fun and it WAS for fun#but i also did a huge presentation on the evolution of depiction of vampires in media#and what fear they represented over time#the reason why all the first ones were so sexy is bc people were panicking over sex#especially women having sex#and yeah theres the assault narrative#but its more about moral purity and not giving into ruinous temptation#and that changes as sex becomes less scary#tho of course the fun paradox is that whenever you write a morality play you also get to express said sexuality#thats why its weirdly easy to read carmilla as not totally against lesbians#i think its bc its from lauras perspective? you get the sense she would have been happy if the men hadnt intervened#but maybe thats the only way i can read it now thanks to carmen maria machado's edition..#theres a convincing paper from the 90s that even dracula was a reactionary response to oscar wilde's trial and conviction#at least partly. bc stoker sent love letters to walt whitman..lol...#anyway as time passes you get kind vampires representing contagious disease#i am legend. the hunger#a lot of vampire fear is also like racism/xenophobia#fear of invaders#thats also present in dracula but other stuff too#there was another big thing but i cant remember rn because i got 3 hours of sleep and dont have access to my notes#but even this concept of the fears they represent evolving over time isnt like. a hard and fast rule#especially with how much we remake the old stuff over and over#*kind of vampires representing disease. they arent kind. lol#near dark has multiple things going on but the blood transfusion scene also treats it like a disease#v

#snap chats#ok but to answer the question. i suppose i do yes sometimes vjerALKVJAELK#i raid my library regularly for their Free Book aisle and while i havent gotten my Classic Lit books from there#its just a funny thing to mention.... i love free books.. a lot of good shit people just abandon..#like a book on the history of cursing !!!! fun read so far and very informative/interesting..#one of my fave Classic Lit book is The Picture of Dorian Gray i think im a big fan of that one really...#Brave New World is my persistent all-time favorite though i constantly reference it and rec it to everyone who asks jvERLAKVAJE#would you guys consider No Longer Human classic lit? idk all i know is that it led me to read Crime and Punishment#both of which i really loved- NLH is also one of my Top Five books to reread i think i talked bout it when i was first readin it years ago#and then. yk. unsurprisingly Dracula is also fun to read DEF WANNA READ CARMILLA AT SOME POINT THO#ive had that on my list for months but i keep getting distracted........ just like The King in Yellow i wanna read that too...#i had to read The Great Gatsby in high school but i genuinely like it... also the Illiad/The Odyssey Similar Sitch And Similar Love For It#while im talking book tho yall know one of my favorite short-story horror writers ??
