One thing that brings me a lot of joy as someone that owns a spider is picturing how drow priestesses or whatever would have to put up with huge spiders everywhere that are sacred and meant to be scary but with how spiders actually act. Sometimes spiders are afraid of their own food so you need to watch them eat so they'll actually do it cause what if that mealworm kills them actually. Sometimes they recognize the food as food but miss it entirely in really lame ways. Sometimes they get afraid of the webbing coming out of their own ass. Sometimes they weirdly stance up in place after eating. They can sploot! OFTEN they shit in their own water bowls and act like you are offending them so much by taking the water out. Someone get Bob on the phone I want to talk about how this should be incorporated. Praise be to Lolths' sacred animal

one of my fave things about spiders is how they walk. theyre so thoughful and melodical about every step and i think thats really cute. they pause when they're unsure and approach everything with this poise about them.

from the perspective of my engineering degree, its also really cool how they move their legs using hydraulics of their own haemolymph (bug blood).

they also have little toe beans. thats also great.

I just gave my baby red knee, Morrigan, a Home Makeover. I'm so pleased with the new substrate and that I could bury her hide. Just figured I'd share since I always love to see Miss Josie. Does she have a namesake or is it a CritterCrew original?

Josie’s name is an original but also inspired by a friend of mine. Honestly I wish I could go back in time and change it but it’s too late, she’s been Josie for too long.

When I got her I joked to my friend Jose that I really ought to give her a common Mexican name. I joked that I was gonna also name her Jose. Then that became Josie and it just sort of stuck

decided AU!Peter gets glasses again in his early 20s after years of powering through vision problems brought on by increased light sensitivity + retaining some mild myopia post-spiderbite.

early on is simple. he thrifts some vintage frames and gets photochromic lenses (aka generic Transitions) put in. specifically the darker ones, so his lenses are always a little gray even inside.

(and now i need to edit some fics again) (lol)

the real question I'm asking myself now is what color lenses he has later, when he gets FF coverage in 2015; considering a lightly tinted minty blue-green in low light which turns a deep grayish green-black in bright sunlight (essentially green-gray transitions on top of a blue base) (also polarized) —

on the one hand, just get polarized sunglasses or clip-ons separately from a pair of regular non-tinted glasses, but on the other hand, as the saying goes: he'd lose his head if it wasn't attached to his neck.

but idk if he'd be willing to wear lovely jade-lensed glasses everywhere lmao — he's not kaine, after all!

...I ordered an enclosure for a Crested Gecko. The last time I tried keeping lizards I was a kid, and I was sick, and I couldn't keep them (They went to a good home with a reptile lover, don't worry!). I've wanted to try again- and do it right- ever since.

So! Enclosure ordered. I'll be going bioactive (which means having Springtails and Isopods in the substrate as a clean-up crew, live plants, leaf litter. More expensive to get at the start, means I will have reduced, or maybe even no substrate changes and only spot cleaning to do) and I am SO excited!

I'm thinking about redoing my s/I for Castlevania Lords of Shadow. Although I love the image I have of them, I'm thinking about making them a monster instead? Specifically like a spider person. I just googled what they're called, and they're apparently called Driders or Arachnes. So, I guess that's what I'm aiming for. I haven't decided what species yet, but I'm thinking either something from the parts of Europe it takes place in, or being a species from America, which are the ones I'm more familiar with. I have a monster girl doll maker app on my phone, so I might reblog this in the morning if I can get a vague design in mind. Actually, a Vinegaroon might be a nice option as well.

all pictures taken through the walls of the tank, and i onlu removed the skin so soon because it was right against the door which i opened to carefully drip some water on her web (she was recovered enough at that point to sit normally).

she was about 6 inches which was my guess! looks bigger now. shes so fresh and shiny and is growing a new leg 🙏

just over 2 months since she last ate which was coincidentally right after i got her.
