randomly thought of a pretty shitty convo i had with someone over a year ago but if weā€™re engaged in a discussion about fictional characters and you stop the conversation to say ā€œyou know theyā€™re fictional rightā€ i will actually think less of you, because youā€™re not playing the game right. obviously theyā€™re fictional if they werenā€™t i wouldnā€™t talk about their lives like that. call it trauma or whatever but i only really let myself talk freely about the characters i care about with people i think i can trust, and if you're going to take that trust and use it to put me down i'm sorry but clearly you don't understand how important this was to me and we shouldn't be friends

fuck it, unedited snippet from an early early post-ph scene i decided to write one night
Tumblr media
#uhhh. how do i tag this#post-ph#yeahhhhh#this is meant to be a bit after bellum runs into link and linebeck (mostly linebeck) and theyre just. talkin#like a day after running jnto each other so theyre just figuring things out with the shared theme of how tf are ypu alive#i like linebecks response it feels very. 19 years old idk. hes not like. entirely chill during this hes tired and wary#hes just got a lil more humor in thsi bit. writing this to try out how i might want to do bellumā€™s dialogue#and get his perspective on linebeckā€™s survival and just have a literal dialogue about that topic specifically#and also figure out some other ideas like linebeck waiting to actually tell link whi bellum is and whatnot#i think i like the idea of bellum having a slighrly childish side with the ā€˜youre the weird oneā€™ line#some kinda balance between him using more complex phrases and ideas in his speech while also talking casually and roughly#and having little indignant childish moments usually in response to something or to demean someone#tbfh mostly posting this bc i wanted to work on it. cuz ive been reading scps and in my enjoyment of it as a cool fiction collection site#forgot that its like. horror. and fucked up some times. and its been a while since i delved into this kinda stuff and forgot my own limits#yknow how it is. prolly gonna play fire emblem or maybe smash bros havent touched that in a while#specifically smash 4 3ds havent played it in a while most been playing ultimate. i have 6 smash mains or w/e. characters i like#sheik ganondorf lucario greninja cloud corrin. used to do lucina but shes a bit too standard swordfighter to be fun for me so now corrin#anyways this is a decent snippet ig. its a lil funny and kinda gives an idea of the convo without giving too much away#not aure if i want rhem to more or less figure out why linebeck survived in this first interaction. tbh its not too hard i think#since bellum does some deductive reasoning comparing jt to past experiences and is like ah. maybe ill save it#maybe he gets conveniently cut off while theyre figuring it out. tbh it works wirh wanting to have link join in somewhat

meanwhile, some quotes about the material:
The "musical within a musical"Ā is about a ramshackle theater troupe haphazardly putting on a show destined for Broadway in exchange for doing chores around the farm. People fall in and out of love throughout the process, all while the city folk comically struggle with the country life. Emmy-winning writerĀ Cheri SteinkellnerĀ was given one mandate, however: "No tractor," she laughed on the phone just weeks before the show was set to begin previews. "They were adamant about that. And there's a tractor in the movie. There's a tractor in almost every scene. It's in many ways about a tractor. But I was told absolutely no tractor." [...] "We're all working on this like we're on an actual summer stock schedule. Art imitates life imitates art. It's just go, go, go. And I couldn't be prouder of our cast, and our Jane and Joe," Steinkellner, who is also a Golden Globe winner, said. Her writing partner also happens to be her husband Bill. "Our 'Summer Stock' is more 'inspired by' than adaptation. There are four songs included from the original film that you can't not do. But the new songs are the best of the old songs. The secret sauce was the great American Songbook." She said "It Had To Be You" is one of the classics audiences can expect.Ā Ā
[source: ā€˜High School Musicalā€™sā€™ Corbin Bleu makes his Goodspeed debut in ā€˜Summer Stockā€™]
So, how different is the musicalĀ Summer StockĀ from the movie? It feels like a whole new animal, even though weā€™ve borrowed some elements from the movie. It is still, first and foremost, a love letter to the theater; itā€™s about this group of players who come to a farm to put on a show. So many numbers are how they get into farming through performance! We also still focus on how Joe and his partner Phil [played by Gilbert L. Bailey II] fight to get the show on its feet, and how Joe helps his eventual love interest Jane [played by Danielle Wade] find her inner performer. But a lot has changed from the film, including some of the relationships. We have a brilliant new writer, Cheri Steinkellner, who has dropped in a lot of nods to why we love musical theater. We have Veanne Cox as Orvilleā€™s mother, who is the new ļæ½ļæ½ļæ½villainā€ of the piece. And weā€™ve added a lot of music, such as ā€œIt Had to Be Youā€ and ā€œItā€™s Only a Paper Moon,ā€ and weā€™ve switched around whoā€™s singing some of the filmā€™s songs, such as ā€œDig, Dig, Digā€ and ā€œHappy Harvest.ā€ But the most important thing is that while weā€™re still in the late 1940s, there are two Black actors playing the male leads ā€“ me and Gilbert Bailey as Phil ā€“ and it is definitely not color-blind casting; itā€™s color-conscious. That means weā€™re dealing with an interracial love affair, for instance. The racial element is an additional driving force, which I think is necessary, but the main story isnā€™t about the struggle for racial equality. In the end, itā€™s still a feel-good MGM-like affair. Youā€™ve previously stepped into the figurative shoes of Gene Kelly, who originated the role of Joe in the movie, as well as Fred Astaire. How does that feel? I am always aware these golden age icons from MGM have such a specific style and that they make what they do look easy. Of course, I want to bring that to Joe. But in the tap dance sequence, for instance, we also have a bit of Gregory Hines, even though Iā€™m no Gregory Hines. And at the end of the day, itā€™s me on stage, and I work hardest on finding my own characterization of these roles. This is your first time working with Donna Feore, who is one of Canadaā€™s leading directors and choreographers. Tell me about your experience with her? Donna is wonderful to work with, both as director and choreographer. I think the best thing about her handling both roles is we donā€™t have to get everyone on the same page, because she is the same page. Sheā€™s also really hands-on with the music; she fought to have a drummer in the room during rehearsals so we could find those beats while we created the choreography, not just insert them later. As she directs, she considers the movement of every scene, but also the story that weā€™re telling through that movement! Itā€™s not movement for movementā€™s sake, and I appreciate that! Goodspeed isnā€™t the easiest place to do a dance-oriented show, is it? Yes, weā€™re dealing with the confines of a very small stage, itā€™s like dancing on a Chiclet. I am so impressed how vibrantly our cast can move on this stage. Weā€™re on top of each other!Ā  I think weā€™d look great on a bigger stage, which is just one reason why everyone is focused on moving this show to New York.
[source: Interview: Corbin Bleu Talks About the New MusicalĀ Summer StockĀ and the Fourth Season ofĀ HSMTMTS]
ā€œSummer Stockā€ is right inĀ Corbin Bleuā€™s wheelhouse. ā€œI feel at home on the stage,ā€ he said. An actor, singer and dancer his whole life, Bleu is appearing in the upcoming stage adaptation of the Hollywood musical beginning July 7 at theĀ Goodspeed Opera House. ā€œI established myself in this particular genre, doing shows associated with Gene Kelly or Fred Astaire,ā€ he said. ā€œI am a bit of an old soul. This is what my voice naturally goes to.ā€ The ā€œHigh School Musicalā€ star is playing Joe Ross, one of a troupe of actors that descends on a small farming town to turn an old barn into a theater. It appears he was born to play the roleĀ originated by KellyĀ on the big screen. ā€œI grew up as a theater kid,ā€ Bleu said. ā€œI grew up watching old MGM movies. I was a theater nerd and a musical theater fan. My dad kept a storage unit of stuff from our childhood, and he found an old school paper from when I was in elementary school where Iā€™m dreaming of performing in musicals.ā€ [...] Of the four shows, ā€œHoliday Innā€ is most similar to ā€œSummer Stock,ā€ which was also adapted from a movie . ā€œHoliday Innā€ was a fairly close reworking of the film, but ā€œSummer Stockā€ takes a few more liberties. ā€œItā€™s not the exact same story,ā€ Bleu said. ā€œWhen I watch the movie, I think it could definitely use some updates.ā€ Those updates include a multi-racial cast. ā€œLetā€™s not skirt the obvious,ā€ Bleu said. ā€œIā€™m a Black guy doing characters traditionally played by white men, doing things Black men werenā€™t traditionally able to do easily at the time these shows take place.ā€ [...] ā€œSome parts of the book are still in process,ā€ Bleu said. ā€œCheri is in the room with us at rehearsals. We want this to feel modern, but we donā€™t want to shoehorn anything in. ā€œI was also part of the workshop we did in New York a month and a half ago,ā€ he added. ā€œIā€™m loving seeing it and Iā€™m loving being a part of it. We know this genre. Itā€™s a feel-good musical comedy, a big song and dance show.ā€ Though there is a lot that has been rethought when reshaping ā€œSummer Stockā€ for the 21st-century stage, those who know it as a Gene Kelly movie will have plenty to latch onto. ā€œWe are completely paying our homage to Gene,ā€ Bleu said. ā€œI am not Gene, but I do have a natural tendency to lean into that style. Gregory Hines is also a big inspiration. Thereā€™s tap dancing in this. Thereā€™s a whole Lindy Hop number. There are a lot of very large dance numbers.ā€
[source: ā€˜High School Musicalā€™ star Corbin Bleu is rethinking ā€˜Summer Stockā€™ at the Goodspeed Opera House]
#already able to guess abt the ''inspired by'' more than [trying for a peak one to one adaptation] and gilbert as phil (as herb in the film)#and vienna as margaret wingate as orville's mother....#doing the like look up & kinda combine nodding and a head tilt abt [moving the show to new york] didn't occur to me but like oh yeah ig#hand on my shoulder like even in looking through one actor's relatively recent oeuvre you See the productions' iterations travel....#hand back on my own shoulder like counterpoint i don't know or much notice or extrapolate shit lol. unless? when i do#you gotta love the meta show bound for nyc within a show about what it takes putting on a show etc etc what all & have you#summer stock#implicitly:#will roland#explicitly a lot re:#corbin bleu#for everyone keeping up with the corbinews / corbin bleuws. got htm:tm:ts in that lol didn't know he was Fictional Corbin in there...#this is just like when corbin bleu went to see the show ft. will roland on bway with a show within its show mentioning going to bway fr...#oh i'd also thought about the tractor issue and figured that truly might be a bit much for a stage production#there's a lot you can move around / evolve / excise / add in the film's material. including the parts about the tractor i'm very sure#even though that's the main character's big Actually Nice moment lmao. i assume an inspired change is that he's Overall actually nice#remembering that fun fact of bmc's bway stage actually being shallower than its off-bway dimensions

^^ "coming to the conclusion that positioning the "can people enjoy things that would be immoral IRL in their fiction" debate as a proship v anti fandom debate is akin to pretending that "should we have the death penalty" is a discussion that only matters in Death Note discourse"
not proshipper not anti but a secret third thing (person who has a career in the media and, through covering legislative politics, has watched "associating with problematic fiction or entertainment is an indicator of moral degeneracy" rapidly become a mainstream GOP position that they are encoding in legislation to target the queer community under the guise of protecting children, thus coming to the conclusion that positioning the "can people enjoy things that would be immoral IRL in their fiction" debate as a proship v anti fandom debate is akin to pretending that "should we have the death penalty" is a discussion that only matters in Death Note discourse ā€” the extent and manner to which fiction affects reality is an issue that is immediately relevant to today's US politics, and to summarize my opinions on the matter in fandom terms would be to diminish the ways this debate is affecting america Right The Fuck Now. and i have stopped taking "this person is bad for shipping the wrong anime thing and being horny about it" in any sort of good faith ever since I saw it literally used as part of a GOP smear campaign against a transgender state legislator in an attempt to defend the right from backlash after they used their supermajority in the Montana house to prevent her from speaking on the floor. Anyway I think everyone on this site, especially Americans, could benefit from ceasing to think in proship v anti vocabulary and instead developing coherent political positions on the nature of fiction that do not directly align with current fascist political tactics)
#oof lots of tags ahead#social#fandom discourse#it's rly hard to be concise about why anti-fandom stuff hits different from other types of fandom wank in short tags or a brief comment#this is not your regular ā€œis luke skywalker evil for blowing up a space stationā€ or ā€œis inuyasha better off with kikyo or kagomeā€#these conversations can be fun or contentious but ultimately have no bearing on rl. meanwhile current discourse leans towards-#ā€œshould dark fiction be allowed to exist?ā€ ā€œshould we maintain accepting spaces for mature fans?ā€ ā€œis fiction always literal?ā€#ā€œis this person Dangerous IRL for the stories they engage with?ā€ ā€œshould we kick them out? All Of Them? From Everywhere?ā€#2010ā€™s conservatism in online spaces was & still is convincing. it regurgitates all conservative talking points that have Always Worked#eg. video games make people violent. deviant sexualities/orientations/identities are dangerous to families. limit childrens' resources.#except this time make it Fandom. except this time the characters and stories are all Literal. they're all Real. not narratives but copies.#and when the motivation for a point is virtue signaling and reactionary moralism and scandalized emotions over critical thinking-#-It Will Always Work. especially bc anyone who saw the writing on the wall (bc this isn't the first time this happened) got shut down Quick#bc ā€œyou just care too much.ā€ it's not an issue about censorship- ā€œit's anime.ā€ it's not shoving members out of queer spaces-#(at a time where for a lot of us in intolerant environments FANDOM WAS OUR QUEER SPACE and for plenty STILL IS)#-ā€œit's just the internetā€ where nothing that happens has any bearing on rl culture or consequence. which is a sentiment that's aged well#all of it tying in with big entities like twitter & google purposefully directing engines to prioritize revenue via clicks/viewership-#-and constantly pushing users to see & engage with contentious threads (you can look up ā€œTristan Harris - US Senate June 25 2019ā€ on YT)#that fucked up users' perception of How To Address Conflict 101 bc fans speaking out against anti stuff ig got conflated with Moral Callout#instead of ā€œhey please don't do x bc of abc reasonsā€-disagreeing now meant you had to FIGHT and gun for some big mic-drop moment of Victory#so fewer spoke up when all this snowballed bc it got harder to just SAY that a ship isn't real and a trope is only narrative#fast forward to today. people of all ages have been soaking in this culture and take it to other facets of their lives#Should There Be Kink At Pride & other queer events? Is my discomfort/lack of understanding equivalent to something outright attacking me?#Did You Know That People Use This Website For Sex Work or other adult-focused services? or even just a creative outlet? should it be banned#IS MY DISCOMFORT SOMETHING I SHOULD ADDRESS AND MANAGE? Or do Others bear the responsibility of catering their worlds around it?

I have hopes and dreams and predictions for the show but if they don't come true, I go "Okay, this is actually really cool in another direction" or "Damn, that was disappointing but I wonder what's gonna happen next" and I enjoy what I got and go write fanfiction about what I didn't.
"Expectations are premeditated disappointments." This doesn't mean don't have expectations, it means be aware your expectations might not be met and that you're going to have an emotional reaction about it.
And while I don't believe there's any such thing as overreacting because you feel what you feel, there is such a thing as reacting appropriately or inappropriately. So when your expectations are let down and you're having an emotional reaction about it, make sure to express that reaction appropriately.
Maybe come up with a plan in advance. "If Cody doesn't show up in the finale, I will choose something else I like about the episodes to focus on instead of obsessing over my disappointment. When I'm done watching, I will be miserable into my pillow for a bit to properly feel the emotion. Afterward, to cheer myself up, I will grab comfort food or take a shower and then make/look for fanworks about what he was doing instead or about him deus ex machina-ing the episode. I will not harass the creative team who did their jobs or my fellow fans who aren't that upset about it."
Please reblog if you're here for the story.
Tumblr media
I watch The Bad Batch as an exploration of the beginning of the Empire from the perspective of a group of fugitives trying to get by in a galaxy that doesn't always make sense.
I'm here for their story.
I'm here for WHATEVER the writers, artists, and composers give us in their own good time. I want the plot to be given to me slowly. I want a character's redemption or further fall to have so much meat to it that I sit back and think, "Wow. They went through hell to get here."
I want to find out what makes the characters tick one morsel at a time, and I'm NOT going to complain about where the writers take them if it's not what I envisioned for them because it's the story.
Honestly, I'm finding this fandom to be a tedious place lately. A lot of people only seem to enjoy the show if they are given exactly what they want by the writers and the moment the show deviates from that, they complain.
I'm here for the story. Please reblog this or leave me a comment if you are too because I want to surround myself with other fans who are here for the Batch's story in whatever direction it takes us.
#/incoherent noises/#star wars#the bad batch#op is right some of y'all need to learn chill like yesterday#dont even get me started on the unwh/tewashtbb gang#as a bipoc i am ashamed to share a fandom with people so aggressively proselytizing about the bare minimum#racism doesnt start and stop at whitewashing and there are far more concerning things to me in the show#like trandoshans being antisemitic caricatures who in tcw literally hunt and kill children for sport#and cid especially is greedy and selfish and only being portrayed as more and more so to play up phee#i love phee so much but pitting two marginalized women against each other is not the thing to do disney#its pretty obvious just about everybody knows tem is māori and the clones shouldn't look the way they do#just look at all the art#though some of yall take it too far in the opposite direction and make them black instead of māori#bc y'all cant tell bipoc apart ig???#i am also still very much going to die on the hill of y'all making fun of gree's hair is racist#bc it is and i have energy to defend that one small thing even though literally nobody is listening#anyways its a finished work of fiction and we're getting one chapter at a time#unless you got a time machine the writer's choices are already made and you have to live with that#everybody does bc thats how common sense works#if you dont like it read or write fanfiction that is literally what fanfiction is for#youre entitled to your opinion and your right to be disappointed and complain#but dear god please have some civility about it#anyway i said dont get me started and then got myself started#i have Opinions about this#when it comes to media hoard things that spark joy yeet things that dont and move on with your life

See my main problem as a creator is that one specific group of headmates is going into every story we write. Like you'll meet Prima and then you're going to see a character very similar to her in basically every oc story we make. I can't just slam dunk her into every story I've ever had so it's like I am about to create a character that is so actually just serving the roles prima would play in this story.
