Okay @s-p-r-i-n-g-t-i-m-e I’m sure you know plenty BUT I’m going to use your wonderful and hilarious comment on this as an excuse to talk about Bernard, bc I realized recently that there are plenty of ppl who haven’t read most of the comics he’s been in. So get ready for my long overdue:

UNPACKING BERNARD DOWD + HIS TRAUMA (for those who cannot keep up with comics but want to get to know him)

So to start, Tim met Bernard years ago ofc, when they were in high school. It’s established pretty quick that Bernard is an extremely Unserious guy LMAO, the first thing he does is literally circle Tim and try to feel him out socially, see what kind of guy he is. He’s the kind of guy who gets himself in trouble with his big mouth, and seems to enjoy poking at Tim and testing his patience. By the time we meet Bernard again in the recent years, he’s grown a lot, but at his core he’s still the light-hearted, fun, goofy guy with very strong opinions. Just less stand-offish, maybe

Throughout the time Tim spends at this school though, Bernard does experience some wild shit. He lost Darla (somebody he really cared about), he experienced a shooting at his school, and then Darla came back from the dead, kind of scared the hell out of him, and used him to contact Tim again. It was kind of played for laughs, but like. That’s gotta fuck you up. (Robin #140)

Obviously this is the kind of thing that maybeee has a lasting effect on you. And BECAUSE Tim Drake: Robin got cut so short and the writer had to rush to wrap up the series, we’re left to fill in a lot of gaps and draw conclusions about the years we didn’t see Bernard ourselves. But we absolutely get some insight as to his life after Tim left that school and we stopped seeing him in the comics. Spoiler alert: it was hard.

In TDR, Bernard discusses the the cult that he’d been in that Tim saved him from in Urban Legends. He says that “he’d accepted himself”, but others hadn’t. Obviously there’s the natural reading that he means his queerness (which has me chewing through drywall), but I think that he’s speaking very broadly too. Bernard is a very odd example of a civilian, because he’s always getting dragged into things much bigger than him. And even before that, he had his big ideas, his conspiracies, his loud personality. He tended to rub people the wrong way in high school. Then in issue #7 of TDR (the Bernard pov issue my most beloved, weird pacing aside) Bernard refers to this “oozy, sticky feeling” that he ALWAYS feels when Tim isn’t around. He says when he’s alone it’s harder to put one foot in front of the other. To keep GOING. To wake up every day.

I think that Bernard has always felt like an outcast. (Robin #121, he doesn’t fit into any clique). He wasn’t as okay with it as he acted. And I think he wasn’t getting any attention from his parents. (Batman: Urban Legends #5, Bernard’s parents nonchalance to the days leading up to his kidnapping)

So just like Bernard explained to Tim, that feeling got bad. and he wanted to let go. The chaos monsters, the cult, all of it was a means to an end. But then Tim agreed to see him again, and I think that sparked something in him. Because he started learning to fight. When he was tied down to that alter and Tim was saving him, I think it fully sank in to Bernard that he didn’t want to die. Reconnecting with Tim gave him hope and made him really feel something good for the first time in ages.

So now that they’re dating after the cult fiasco, we get to know this current Bernard. A less goading, maybe calmer Bernard. But he’s still himself, of course, rambling about his ideas and making bad jokes and sticking to his guns (he has NEVER been a pushover, no idea where people get that idea?). I think a lot of people complained that Bernard mellowed out too much in terms of attitude, but I think if he seems “nicer” it’s because 1) he’s grown now. It’s been a while since we last saw him, and he’s clearly changed a lot. And 2) because he’s dating Tim now. He likes him a lot, and he’s an affectionate partner. He wants to lift Tim up.

But the fact that he was pulled into a cult still remains. And as lighthearted as Bernard tries to be, that traumatic experience still happened. It said in Urban Legends #5 while Tim was searching for him that Bernard had welts on his arms and legs and had been acting different, so it’s not like he was just snatched up on a whim. He’d spent significant time there. For those who haven’t read much abt the ways cult trauma specifically can fuck you up, I recommend doing a search if you’re in a good headspace for that and want to understand him more. because it’s pretty bad.

And then! yeah. you guessed it. Bernard gets kidnapped again. Chained up next to a BOMB that’s counting down. RIGHT WHEN HE’S WORKING ON HEALING FROM ALMOST BEING SACRIFICED BY A CULT.

And surely this can’t get crazier. He’s almost died twice in the past 6 months. except, remember his parents? In TD:R #7, we really see a little more of his relationship with his parents. He doesn’t live up to their standards, and his dad specifically seems to just want to argue with him. The restaurant they’re at is attacked, and everything goes to shit, and. you know, I think these panels really speak for themselves.

And for the record, when it’s revealed that everyone is seeing their worst fears, Bernard’s parents fears are not about him.

So now Bernard has to deal with that. And we start to see that Bernard is really not as okay as he’s tried to be. He keeps a baseball bat by his door because he’s been kidnapped twice now. And just when he’d likely thought things couldn’t get worse, he heard the Chaos Monsters were back. I can’t imagine he feels safe. He lashes out for the first time since all this has happened and yells at Kate and Tim, because while they’re doing what they feel is necessary to save more people (AND I DONT BLAME THEM AT ALL), Bernard can’t talk about it.

And I will forever be sad and insist that TD:R got cancelled too soon, just before we could get into the really juicy stuff, because things had to be wrapped up pretty quick and this was the only comic Bernard was consistently appearing in. But when Tim is giving himself up to the chaos monsters, Bernard goes out and rallies anyone he knows can help. Things were rushed because there was no more time to flesh out the story the way it could have been, but I’m including these panels just because I love Bernard Audacity Dowd using a fucking flashlight and shadow puppet to call Batman. geeking out for a minute. And then leading the battalion to save Tim with a SLEDGEHAMMER. gay people rule.

So yeah! While I see the vision of how a lot of Bernard’s trauma was meant to be semi-resolved and let him come to peace after saving Tim back, we just didn’t have the time for him to heal properly. All the dev commentary I picked up from the UTY anniversary stream

• It apparently took them FOREVER to solidify a design for Decibat. One of the early concepts was a literal baseball bat with wings and I enjoy this fact very much

• They originally had an idea that Dalv would accidentally try and move into Martlet’s house after leaving the Ruins LMAO

• They expanded on this piece of concept art that had been floating around: there were never really plans for the Feisty Five to be evil, they just made their own wanted posters to inflate their own egos LOL

• I didn’t really write any of the specifics down, but listening to them talk about the Flowey fight was so interesting because they were all chiming in about who worked on what parts and where the inspirations were from and where they sourced their materials. Some details I remember off the top of my head:

- Flowey’s voice lines were pulled from the same McDonald’s commercial as his canon ones

- The audio for the scene where Martlet melts before Meta Flowey was a combination of a stock laugh and a clip one of the devs just so happened to have, when they used to edit for a YouTube channel, and the file got corrupted and just randomly made that sound

- The heartbeat monitor sound that plays during the Organic speciman is taken from the frequency of an actual human heart. Don’t remember the story about how they acquired that one

- The graphics for the Polygonal speciman were inspired by PS1 horror, Ben Drowned and that meme that went around in the late 2010s of a gif of a bug that made it look like a bug was on your screen (in specific reference to the little Flowey gremlins that crawl down the screen)

- They originally had plans to include a spectrogram in the fight, but decided it would make them seem too tryhardy

• There were plans for an underwater segment that were scrapped extremely early in development, something about a bridge in Waterfall breaking

• The comment Starlo makes in the Wild East about there being a fourth mission that was scrapped from the regimen is a reference to a literal fourth mission that the devs cut because they felt like it killed the pacing, where Virgil would kidnap the Feisty Five and tie them up in places around town and you had to go rescue them and it was a stealth game type thing

• - The designs for the Feisty Five have a lot of funny inspirations

- Ed was originally designed to be a normal monster, but they liked his design so much they used it for something more important

- Initial concepts of Moray’s design had them in a fisherman’s cap or a paper boat hat, to show how unserious they were about this. Also, they weren’t originally designed to be Angie and Gillbert’s child, a playtester just made that assumption and they were like y’know what sure we’ll roll with it

- Mooch’s design originated from a Minecraft RP OC that one of the devs had that she never got to use. Which is iconic tbh

• Mo was inspired by this lil dude, who showed up and had babies in one of the devs’ attic. Additionally, while coding the game, there were little variables they put in for fun like a timer. One of them was a number that just incrementally increased, and was labelled “Crimes that Mo has committed”

• The fact that sparing Dalv doesn’t abort Geno, that everyone chalked up to being a genius narrative decision, was AN OVERSIGHT??????? It was a coding error caused by the fact that they were initially gonna make everything that happens in the Dark Ruins not count towards any route, like Flowey implies in his dialogue, but they went back on that decision and fixed it for everyone except Dalv. They made a comment on stream like “we should really fix that” and everyone in chat was like PLEASE don’t LOL

• There were never really concepts for a Geno Starlo fight. And a lot of it is the reasons the fandom talks about that he’s a coward before his character development and it makes more sense for him to back out in the face of real danger. But also because in terms of power level, it didn’t make sense for him to stand a chance. And also because they were making all the routes at once and designing the boss fights at equal times and this was the first chance they got to make a boss fight for Ceroba LOL. But the plan was already set by that point that it was gonna be her instead of him

• No one truly knows the origins of the super faded silhouette standing in the background of the UG Apartments shop in Geno. Apparently the dude who made the CG just. Put it there

• We got more insight into the Martlet transformation animation. It was made with SO much purpose. If you look closely, she starts to melt and the determination puddles underneath her, but then she gains control of it and the puddle ABSORBS BACK INTO HER, then shoots out in a burst when her first wing transforms. THAT’S SO COOL

• Additionally, they also canonized that Martlet took the determination before Alphys had any of the fallen-down bodies, and that she had no idea what it actually WAS, other than that it had something to do with the human SOULs. Which makes this even MORE impressive because she wasn’t intrinsically prepared to control determination, she just DID it

• We got confirmation that Flowey is still in control of saves after defeating Axis in Geno, and Clover’s text in the overworld/after dying is just them being so focused on their mission that they’re drowning out everything else

he was born with an extremely rare and powerful feature, six eyes, which immediately puts him into the spotlight since his birth. he was just little when a target was put on his head for various reasons (ex. money, fear, power) so he had to act accordingly in order to protect himself [child gojo scenes]. he was also adored by many but solely for his strength and ability to protect, his capability to shoulder a lot of responsibilities because he was gojo. we can assume that it's instilled to him from the very beginning that he needs to fulfil that duty because what other purpose would heis ability serve? he doesn't particularly like his role either [basketball scene] as that's all what he's been doing, it's all what he's been told, and it's all what he'll continue to do even after his death.

but even with his service, he's still treated like shit. to almost everyone, gojo's identity doesn't go beyond his name, his CT, his six eyes, his ability to lift heavyweights, his almost unmatched strength and intelligence,, he is a tool, an object with a purpose. even with his power, he couldn't bring himself to go against those weaker than him—the very people he protects. he's supposedly above everyone yet it seems like he's under their tight grip. tho can see where they're coming from as the gap between him and everyone else is large, but it's still a heavy responsible to carry,, it's exhausting and it sucks the life outta you

he's so lonely despite being surrounded by people, not just in the sense that his peers don't get along with him because they think he's insufferable, but also in the sense that he has no one to share his burdens with (by splitting the responsibility, talking about it, or understanding him), he can't be his authentic self around anyone, he can't be human around anyone. because if the gojo satoru was worried, exhausted, defeated, that means everyone is doomed! he can't show anything but his silly and unworried personality to protect people around him. the persona he's curated acts like a veil which conceals the fights sorcerers go through to defeat enemies.

to the majority, gojo is not completely a human person, no the depth or nuance, he is simply a strong character. he can't deny the request for help, he can't seek help, he certainly can't rest. who knows what goes on inside his head? who knows what his thoughts are like and how he's affected by all the burden he carries? well, the two people who was near his level knew (geto and yuuta)

he's truly miserable.. and because of how the jujutsu world is, everything would crumble if there wasn't someone that is both powerful and exploitable. I think understanding him is as far as we'll get to making him human

literally everyone jannik sinner has traumatized this year (with the notable exceptions of tallon griekspoor and daniil medvedev thank god) is in his quarter of the draw. taylor fritz, who he beat in the uso final? yep. alex de minaur, aka the #1 pigeon of jannik? yep. ben shelton, who he has beaten like four times? yep. holger rune, who jannik got monte carlo revenge on this year? yep. jack draper, who went through that puke-filled uso semi against jannik? yep. oh and there's also faa, bublik, matteo arnaldi, and jiri lehecka. this quarter could literally be its own tournament draw, it's so stacked. that said, even with all these extremely talented players, jannik is still probably gonna sweep. he has made the qfs of every literally every tournament he's played this year. but if there's one where he's gonna get upset before the qfs... it's holger in paris bercy (or even indoor felix if he gets past ben). plus we haven't experienced the taylor fritz blond era tennis yet, so who knows, maybe he'll sweep

the second quarter is just so weird. seriously, who was like yeah let's put zverev, tsitsipas, and rublev in the same quarter. there's a lot of clay courters in this quarter, which is the opposite of the first one that is full of hard court players. something interesting here is that lorenzo musetti could play zverev again after beating him in vienna and can hopefully repeat the result. a tsitsipas/rublev flop off could also be very interesting, I think andrey would be able to flop less and win but I definitely don't think he's defending his semifinal points. arthur fils is also in this quarter and has been in the form of his life, so he can for sure do some damage. can tallon griekspoor take advantage of being free of sincaraz for once? probably not

the third quarter should actually be kinda fun. hubi is back apparently, and we've got grigor, frances, and daniil. I do spy machac lurking near grigor (because apparently we're just repeating this week's draws) and their vienna match was an absolute banger. mpetshi is also in this quarter and has proven how good he is on indoor hc by pulling off the mythical task of beating felix in basel. karen is in good form too, but I could see him being tired from his run this week and losing to frances or mpetshi in the second round. oh and then daniil. I don't even know what's going on with him, he might make the semis or he might lose to matteo second round

and finally, the easiest draw ever for carlos alcaraz. casper ruud as your 5-8 seed is what you want to see when you're a 1-4 seed, and tommy paul wasn't in great form in his lost to nakashima. speaking of nakashima, he's here too, and who knows how he's gonna play. he's so good at tennis except random matches (or even just sections of matches) where he forgets how to hit the ball. if carlos doesn't make the semis, it's on him, this draw is so easy

royalty!au yinnire is quite the playful assassin. she doesn’t take most of her battles as seriously as she should, mostly because of an unwavering confidence in her own abilities, but she still certainly gets the job done. upon her first meeting with artemis, she doesn’t think twice about teasing and toying with the duty-bound knight. yinnire is so unserious it’s so funny like imagine her launching a counterattack on artemis while the latter is fully armored while the former is not so she’s like: “ow… geez, they should really go back to making leather or wooden armor, at least it’d be easier to break…” HAJDJJDKSAKA

HELPPKPDLDKSKHFG artemis is normally quite stern, but royalty au artemis? 10x worse. super uptight and strict in her mannerisms, which can be attributed to her retired mentor who is possibly the strictest person in the entire expanse of the kingdom (cough cough lan cough cough)... unlike yinnire, she takes all of her battles extremely seriously, because she knows well that she may encounter foes of greater strength than she. so. safe to say this is SOOOO funny. this is such a hysterical dynamic for them to have. the back and forth banter between them is probably so insanely funny tbh LMAO

once again, i've had time to gather my thoughts so here they are:

there was a lot of tonal whiplash in that ep, from scene to scene but also the tone/mood shift from the scenes before the fight with carbon vs during and after was so quick and jarring imo

like they really had me in the first half, knowing the spoilers beforehand i thought it must’ve been a prank or that they changed the story from the theatre run cause it was so unserious and ridiculous for the first half, it just didn’t seem like they’d kill joke. again, the tonal whiplash was strong

i thought maybe we were overanalyzing the scenes in the series where they mention joke dying, or that the writers forgot to pickup those threads but. obviously not lmao. it seems this was planned from the start, which makes me wonder if they’d always intended to do s2 (or a second special ep or movie, whatever it ends up being)

for a minute i thought the constant teerak/ cheesiness was overdone and slightly ooc compared to jackjoke from the series but then i decided it was fine lmao. partly cause i knew they’d be the clingiest mfs on the planet so vindication for me lmao. but also cause let’s be real, they were ready to die together. they were making out with a bomb strapped to joke’s neck. after everything they’ve been through? they deserve it. i hope they’re 10x worse post-reunion in s2

was the writing great? no. was it cringe sometimes? yes. will i eat up a s2 despite that? also yes 🙂‍↕️

we talk a lot about war’s acting (rightfully so!) but yin did those grief scenes really well. my stomach was in knots watching jack lose himself, punching hoy, unable to come to terms with everything. the post wedding scene where he’s crying at the table? emotional damage. the last scene on the swings? even more emotional damage. yinwar the actors you are

say what you want about the story but the character consistency is there in this show. sacrificing himself to save jack + their friends was so on brand for joke

i have mixed feelings about marketing it as a wedding ep and then giving us that. on one hand, maximum angst and emotional damage, which i love, but on the other hand…kinda brutal tbh. if it hadn't been for the end credits scene it would've been extremely questionable - i'm not even one to hate on a well-done MCD but the series just wasn't thematically set up as a tragedy for it to make sense or be anything other than for shock value. but again, it seems they were always planning for s2

i’ve decided i didn’t hate it but i didn’t love it either. it might’ve been easier to deal with if it came with an official s2 announcement but given that’s not confirmed…just the thought of jack thinking joke is dead after everything they’ve gone through and that never being cleared up is so devastating to me lmao

i strongly agree that “shipping” should not be automatically conflated with annoying tendencies that are very common in fan spaces, and you are not a more earnest and intellectual fan or whatever if you are opposed to it and neglect it lol. it is a sentiment that i have noticed growing as a reaction to how ship centric and virulent discussion of art can become, but romantic relationships and sex obviously can and will typically be an extremely integral part of characters and stories, and it is pretty hilarious to act like and imply that “it is not worthwhile, it is unserious and just self indulgent, and it diminishes what stories and dynamics are really about.” if you are vigorously opposed to engaging with these aspects of characters and their stories and are condescending towards others for doing so you might be missing huge chunks of the very writing you herald, which does not make you all that different from the people you are fuming about lmao

During my Paul Dano days I started out as spicedchaiandromeda. I loved getting spiced chai lattes at every coffee shop I went to, what can I say lol.
