Do you have ideas for how to make an oc who was taken in by nero?
I've thought a lot about this! I actually made refs for @deadangelos of what I imagine the canon Nero kids could be like (and I have a lot of hcs/aus about them)!
From what we know about the Tri kids, there seem to be three main elements to them: 1.) Roman-themed names, 2.) Their powers/roles are meant to replace one of the Olympians (or gods in general), possibly their own actual godly parent, and 3.) They were orphaned somehow, either through Nero orchestrating their mortal parent(s)' death or just being orphaned through less malicious means. They also all seem to be in the age range of 6-to-18ish. Maybe closer to 8-to-16. Also boy howdy do these kids have problems. They're also probably all particularly powerful demigods for whoever their godly parent is, based on Meg.
What I did for a lot of these guys, based on what we know about Meg, is focused on the mythology of whichever god Nero intends them to usurp and center their character around some of those themes and roles, with the thoughts of how Nero would raise them to mold them to those concepts. I also like to think about exactly what iteration of their parent their godly parent is - Like Meg's Demeter is very specifically Eleusinian Mysteries Demeter, for example, which we're told is why she's so particularly powerful as a Demeter kid.
So, for example: That Hermes kid is themed specifically around Hermes' psychopomp and messenger roles, so he's a really high-energy guy who can see ghosts and that combo is not doing him a lot of favors. Cassius in TOA is unclear if he's a Dionysus or Zeus kid, but I like to theme him around specifically Zeus' childhood myths because I think that's a really interesting aspect of him to focus on (and in doing so I can set up the Tri kids as basically being reverse order of the Olympians age-wise, which is fun - though if you make Cassius a Dionysus kid then they're probably just approximately same age order of the Olympians). Lucius and the Artemis-themed kid I've based off Apollo and Artemis' more destructive myths, because I figured it'd be most interesting to think about how Nero might foster those aspects if he sees it as more useful to him. The Hephaestus and Dionysus kids' are based around how Nero might have raised them to mirror the childhood myths of their respective roles and what effect that has on them, etc etc.
Hopefully this gives you some ideas!
#pjo#riordanverse#pjo ocs#godly parents#< this is just my general tag for ''nonspecific pjo oc concepts centered on being somebody specific's kid''#in this case theyre the Tri kids#Anonymous#my art#ask#nero kids pjo

LAMIA REDESIGN
(I DID IT FINALLY)
There were 3 deathless creatures made by an upper being, they were the first fauns, rumoured to be named Tanu (Black Faun), Raloi (Blonde Faun), and Lamia (Snow fur faun). Tanu the faun god of night and fear, Raloi the Faun goddess of the sun and beauty, And Lamia the faun Goddess of the cold and destruction.
Raloi always would crave attention being her downfall, as the higher beings (main Greek gods and goddesses) was displeased with her unfaithful acts, so she ‘disappeared’. It’s rumoured that she was turned into a goat and trapped in stone deep in the forest.
Tanu could never sleep, and when night would come out, he would watch over the many villages, some say he painted the night sky with stars. They say if you see a shooting star it was Tanu running across the sky, leaping from star to star and a meteor shower was him guiding spirits to their final destination.
Then Lamia, the oh ‘mighty’ Ram of destruction. Despite she’s a goat like the others there was a major misconception with early civilisations seeing the ‘mini’ goddess they didn’t exactly know what a goat was. So she got THAT title, which she hates. But she’s used to it by now.
She is the goddess of ice and destruction, often being shown on side with Ares as war cannot happen without destruction and bloodshed. Lamia cannot swim, as the water around her hooves freezes over, think of Elsa when she walks on water. Hence why when people who saw a trail of stray ice across bodies of water they would say it was Lamia coming from the battle of the great. (Whatever that is) One time when she was much younger she had fallen into the water, trying to break through the thick ice, struggling for hours. She remembers seeing two large eyes in the darkness of the deep sea, she still hears his voice… Before calling on her weapon ‘Kóptis’ bursting from the ice and clambering onto it the hole she had just emerged from had already frozen over. She had hidden from humanity in the depths of the snowy tundras, now a rarely known Goddess, yet some small civilisations still plead and bring offerings under her name to her little altars in their territories. Wishing for protection and the destruction of their enemies if they were to engage with war. She also avoids hot weather since she has thick hair, built for living in the snow or cool temperatures.
She easily eats meat, including goat, but tries to keep a balanced diet. (Omnivore)
ALT
(WEAPON UNDER CONSTRUCTION! :D) Kóptis is a 7”ft long crosscut saw blade on a long staff with a firm handle having 3 curved in claws on the back, a pale white permanent ice growth coming from the blade having a faint fog, the blade itself a steel colour with inward cuts that could do some damage if needed, the blade having some black patterns along it. It weighs around 37lbs it’s heavier at the tip due to ice growth.
How she lifts it is a marvel given her size, while most mortals would struggle to carry a weapon of this build on the field, she makes it work. She can spear it into the ground causing a burst of ice spikes originating from the puncture point. She can also stand on the claws at the end with one hoof, usually perching like this when surveilling the area or waiting for the tides of war nearby.
She also unexpectedly strong for her small size, so yes, quite literally the gag of the tiny character that will slam another character from side to side. Also you best believe she will ram the living soul out of you.
She does not have any children, she is still antisocial after who knows how many years of living. In her young godhood despite what she was the goddess of she was stupidly shy. Therefore Ares had to get involved to train her, leading to them having a sibling like bond. (Imagine Athena) But now this lil goddess has a short temper, being easy to trigger. Which other gods and goddesses will use to get a rile out of her.
The only two gods she would willingly talk to is either Ares or Dionysus, while she will gladly listen to Aphrodite give her the latest God and Goddess gossip, sometimes Aphrodite will start playing with her hair.
She wouldn’t even go near Poseidon since the whole water thing since she thinks he automatically hates her existence for absolutely no reason and plus water so yeah, however after meeting each other at one of the winter solstice’s, she was being clammed up by a pedestal, but Zeus had noticed this and teased Poseidon to no end calling him a ‘lone wolf’ and eventually irritated Poseidon enough to approach Lamia. The two though they won’t admit it to others had a few common interests, and they actually bonded. She would go to a cliff by the sea to meet up with him time from time, since it was the easiest and most isolated spot for them both.
Also she cannot STAND Apollo, so she would be very reluctant and stubborn to go to Apollo’s hospital somewhere in Olympus even if she did look like Swiss cheese, Apollo also teases her if she does end up getting dragged through by force. Usually mocking her about her injuries or how she’s supposed to be ‘soooo tough’ adding fuel to their already raging fire. Ares usually has to hold her back like a child, which is comical to say the least.
She will also often engage in the battles she was called in but only a little since it’s not exactly fair for mortals to fight against a goddess, unless she’s in a bad mood then she’s gonna sweep ya’ll away with the sharp edges of her weapon.
Her favoured offerings are; lingon berries, Cinderella pumpkins, sweet/black wines, the 7th rib of a goat, or the hallowed horn of the goats(the ones you can blow into)
(She sounds like Morgan Clae because why not, you know that after existing for so long she will sing like a Disney princess if she’s alone and the voices are getting to her.)
Also I imagine if she was in Epic she would appear during Poseidon’s song as I imagine they would be that random power couple that somehow happened despite she mostly is still afraid of the water, but she’s willing to be brave for Poseidon.
HER ARMOUR IS HERE!
Lamia’s pride is held high by her armour, keeping it as clean as she can in her spare time. She is not afraid to get physical though. Her armour is quite heavy which is confusing for others considering how agile she is in her armour. As the picture states, when she wears her helmet her voice drastically deepens sounding a lot like Ares, so they get a little kick out of it when they can. She went through many reshapings of her chassis with Hephaestus as she wanted her tail to be hidden as she doesn’t like others seeing it. So it was either too short or too big, eventually getting it right in the end. Hephaestus somewhat likes her as a friend, but she often wants to test his weapons which he won’t allow, and he knows that if she visits his forge she’s done something to ruin her armour.
OG DESIGN AND POST:
Normal voice: Morgan Clae
youtube
helmeted voice: Lord dominator (masked) (closest I could find to Ares at the moment without it just being literal Ares lmao)

What if... Leo Became a God?
Okay, but what if Leo literally burnt away his mortality during Blood of Olympus while fighting Gaea?
Now, before you go ahead and bring out the sledgehammers and pitchforks, or think I'm just doing it as a joke, this is a possibility that I'm being very sincere in considering this. And it is a possibility, because this isn't the first time this has happened in myth - Heracles did it first. So if burning himself alive in a freaking pyre was all Heracles needed to ascend to godhood, Leo literally burning himself alive using his own flames to kill a Primordial should be more than enough. Plus there's the whole Hera mimicking what Demeter did with Demophon, so we could say he's nearly there. Him burning himself alive is just that final push he needed to become a god, burning away his own mortality.
I mean, think about it. The prophecy always said, an oath to hold with a final breath, but it never meant Leo had to get close to perma-dead. Riordan did it just fine with the Physician's Cure, having Leo achieve apotheosis to do so would also be a way to circumvent the loophole in the prophecy. The phrasing is vague in that 'final breath' could be interpreted in multiple ways, such as 'one's final breath as a mortal.'
Oh the irony. We all thought Leo was going to die, then bam! Boy ends up with a permanent lease on life by literally burning himself alive, a lot more power than he could ever imagine getting, and a lot of freedom he never had as a mortal. He's lucky demigod #3 to ascend to godhood without divine patronage, right after Heracles and Dionysus. When he returns to Camp Half-Blood, it isn't on Festus, but him straight-up materializing in the middle of his funeral. Nearly every Greek and Roman but especially Nico mentally screams WTF as they realize that the funeral hasn't even ended, and Leo's shroud is basically his first offering.
His friends reactions to seeing him - and realizing the truth of what he has become. Jason and Piper are in shock, realizing that their friend is now going to stay young and will eventually watch them die and have to move on. Frank and Hazel are bewildered, because Leo's plan to burn himself alive to defeat Gaea had gone horribly right and now they have to deal with the fact that they had a hand in Leo's apotheosis. Percy and Annabeth are bewildered and shocked at the fact that Leo just straight up became a god - and the now very real reality that one of them may eventually do so (cough cough Percy).
When Leo goes to free Calypso, she literally has to process the fact that the boy she may have liked is now a god - the very beings she despises for imprisoning her in Ogygia. That eventually Leo may most likely move on to someone else and dump her. This crashes especially hard when she gets out of that island and realizes that she's become mortal. The dynamics between them have completely changed and Leo isn't aware of it, and Calypso doesn't know how to process that.
Hera is the one to explain exactly is going on to Leo, because she knows she had a hand in Leo becoming a god. She owes him at the very least to guide Leo in his new reality, and both the positive and negative benefits that are associated with ascension to godhood. Hephaestus doesn't know how to handle Leo now basically being just there forever, because none of his children ever became gods unless they were the children of him and a god. Nemesis marvels at the irony of Leo becoming a god while stealing Gaea's life, noting that this was a rather marvelous way that Leo rained his vengeance upon her. Apollo's just friendly because now he has a new friend to be with him in Olympus.
But this ending - for Heroes of Olympus as a whole - would be more poetic and a parallel to The Last Olympian. Percy was satisfied with who he was, protecting the world to save those he loves and he's happy with that. Leo is one who ascends to the heavens in his feat to avenge those he loves and destroying those who tried to destroy him.
But... there's one thing they have in common.
Leo's first act as a god isn't to rescue Calypso. It isn't to appear before the Seven and let them know he's alive. Leo appears in the Underworld and requests for only a single soul to be allowed a second chance at life. The single soul that he loves the most.
Esperanza Valdez is brought out of the underworld, and Leo freezes. The boy on fire who became a god turns back into a boy of eight years old as he finally gets back the mom he lost so long ago as he hugs her as best as he can. He hadn't expected to be a god. He didn't know what would happen next. But this - this is one of the few times things actually feel right. They've both been given a new lease on life - one longer than the other, but they can finally keep moving forward.

Not that anybody really cares, but these are my personal takes on the first 2 PJOTV episodes.
1. Grovers character so far is getting too much hate! I, personally, think that the additions of Grover aren't that bad of a change for him. The scene in the office genuinely show how he is willing to risk his friendship just to save Percy. Also, be mad at Chiron for that, not Grover. Chiron made him do it.
2. Mr. D is adapted so well in this, and you cannot convince me otherwise.
3. Gabe is actually NOT written too nice. As someone who has dealt with manipulation/emotional abuse he is almost exact to the people who are like this (atleast in my personal experience.) Like, I'm no pro, but it's pretty spot on.
4. I don't really like Lukes character development... you're supposed to like him before the big betrayal and his character just feels super stiff.
5. THE BLACK SCREENS FOR TRANSITIONS ARE SO ANNOYING AND A TERRIBLE CHOICE. It doesn't really take away from the episodes, and I still enjoyed them either way, but it was still a really lazy and weird way to show a time skip.
6. Episode 1 had really weird pacing and went super fast. I can't really explain it, but it just felt rushed.
7. The fight with Ms. Dodds was super disappointing :( although Percy being unconscious on the floor while everybody is standing there was really funny.
8. The mythomagic for training is actually a really cool detail and I'm super excited to see how that helps him and Nico bond in the future! However, it's gonna make Nico running away hurt even more😭
9. Clarisse is amazing. The restroom scene felt a little disney channel, but she is so cool and well executed I love her anyway. Also, THE CAMO PANTS!! I am so happy that made an appearance.
10. Walkers sass for Percy is literally the best, he is literally him. Same thing for Leah for Annabeth. The small detail with her fixing Percy's strap was hilarious. Her blunt "tell it how it is" attitude is honestly such a good personality trait for her, and I think will mean a lot in the further episodes.
Overall rating?
Episode 1: 7/10
It was a great start to the series! The editing is certainly... a choice. Felt kinda rushed, but I really loved some of the changed made. Kind of mad that the outro song isn't Riptide (PJO version.) Still got me hooked!!
Episode 2: 8.5/10
They shouldve knelt when he was claimed. Pacing was better, but the weird transition point was still there. Lukes development is super boring, and I genuinely considered skipping his scenes. They should've shown the Council of the Cloven more, but I don't really care about that, it was just a missed opportunity. Loving Annabeths character, even if she wasn't there a whole lot! Chiron is making me mad, though. I LOVE DIONYSUS.
I'm super excited to see what they do with the characters. I'm trying to be super patient with the characters development, since its only the first 2 episodes, but I'm super worried that 6 more episodes won't be enough to properly execute everything necessary for the book. This is especially because most of the book is spent explaining things and is mainly world building. Everybody is almost exactly how I imagined, with maybe a few minor details, but nothing I even mind.

That is a ver intersting outtake for sure! For his trip to the underwworld I would suggest you to look to the Orphic traditions about Zagreus or trips like Odysseus or Heracles in the underworld. And making it psychological would absolutely be the trail of thought I would go with too! From what you have noticed I love adding more pshycological load to the story. For example I was intrigued when I wrote my version of how Odysseus dies and goes to the underworld so I wanted to focus more on the psychological pain and worries of the hero rather than detail every part of the underworld:
So I am very happy when others try to insert psychological factors in their stories rather than just mentioning accurate facts.
Yup in fact in places like Athens of classical times, the family couldn't even attend to public affairs till the miasma of death passed. That is a brilliant idea too! And makes sense! And yes the Olympians in general cannot prevent fate! Zeus himself couldn't prevent the fate of his son's Sarpedon, death. So I can imagine absolutely that Asclepius could be potentially dreading the idea of death and what comes with it and thus his great dedication to healing process.
I absolutely agree! Like I said I was inspired by a similar thing when I wrote my own descend of Odysseus to the underworld.
Your analysis is absolutely on point! The only people theoretically who can resurrect the dead are the gods and even they need special permission like Dionysus who asks permission from Zeus to resurrect and deify his mother Semele. A human performing these would absolutely ruffle some feathers and I absolutely agree with your outtake! Indeed Asclepius bringing back from the dead figures that were rightfully punished for their hubris sounds like a way of him performing hubris in every possible way; for once he claims power over life and death and two he claims he can "correct" a godly punishment.
I absolutely see what you mean and that is exactly what I think and I agree! The same goes with the inevitable death that can happen. Achilles for example was destined to die young and sespite the prophecy that said "he will live if he doesn't fight" was already a false hope. Just by the prophecy that they would need the strongest of all Greeks for the war that was already destined to happen, Achilles was bound to be there, no matter what Thetis did. As I also mentioned to my analysis on fate and destiny in Odyssey, Odysseus was bound to fail even if he got "hope" from Circe and Tiresias etc. it is the human need like every creature need to survive because of the fear of death and at the same time the very same fear for death sets some people for failiure to live their life.
That is literally what a retelling is my friend! You follow the sources, ideally you study a bit on the background, and then you fill in the gaps with your liberties or your ideas or theories to reate a fun and unique result! I absolutely LOVE to play with those! Like I said I played with those for my "Survivor's Guilt, Survivor's Duty" story to fill in the gaps on how the whole Ogygia misadventure began. I also played with the Aftermath in the Iliad battle when Odysseus is being healed for the stab wound after he was taken out of battle by Menelaus and Ajax:
This is literally how liberties are ideally used for a retelling in my brain and I believe you will do a marvelous job to it!
Question about mythology inspired stories and creative liberties
I'm asking this because I plan to write my own fic from an established Greek myth and kinda want a second opinion. I'm writing for myself in order to train and have fun, no publishing plan.
Since I barely started, I won't ask anyone to beta-read it (I don't know if I'll even show it on the net). But I'd like to have a second opinion, or rather multiple ones.
I'm a bit embarrassed because I don't usually post about my projects but I decided to try.
The myth I chose isn't told in one theater play or a poem, but mentioned in sources. So that lets me room to make a story out of it, to fill in the holes and unexplained parts. Like I'd want to add character interactions that didn't take place, or themes or smth.
But I know the myth is about a very important established figure and I don't want to mangle the original story or lose the meaning.
Even though I won't make something as extreme as "it's in USA now", "Perseus X Medusa" or "Odysseus stabs Poseidon with his trident" (lol Epic 🤣), I'd still like to write the thing while keeping the story compelling and with some ✨ancient Greek authenticity✨.
So I'm asking you for advice so I can have a general direction.
(also is it okay to pull stuff from latin sources when the Greek ones doesn't provide a contradicting answer ?)
And since I love to complain, it would kinda be hypocritical not to make any effort myself 😅
Tagging : @katerinaaqu @margaretkart @nysus-temple @sarafangirlart @dootznbootz @aliciavance4228 and anyone else who'd like to provide an opinion on this.
(obviously you don't have to answer but I'm curious)
I'll maybe tell who it is about if you want more details, this is just me being a bit shy about it 🤭...
#thanks!#glad you find it useful#greek mythology#greek myth discussion#oh what language is the original that you have in mind?

PERCY JACKSON DREAM-CAST (The Greek Gods)
My friend @queenslayerthepoet and I decided to fancast the Greek gods and this is what we came up with. (To be frank, I am quite proud of this list.) That said, this is a dream-cast. The actors/models chosen are solely based on how I imagined the gods to look like and how their appearances were described in the books. Realistically, I can’t see these people working together, but a girl can dream right?
1. ZEUS
Hugh Jackman
2. POSEIDON
Jason Momoa
He was Aquaman. That’s all I am going to say.
3. HADES
Robert Pattinson
This might not be anyone’s first choice, but I will stand by it. Also, Rob Pattinson never fails to surprise, so I think he can pull this off.
OR Alfie Allen
He captures Hades’ gaunt look perfectly.
4. DIONYSUS
Luis Guzman
OR Gary Oldman (And when I say Gary Oldman, I mean this:
5. ARES
Roman Reigns
OR Tom Hardy
But I feel like Tom Hardy will end up making him likable and Ares is not supposed to be likable. At least, not in the first book.
6. APHRODITE
Several actresses and models of different shapes, sizes and races to show beauty is subjective.
7. ATHENA
Gal Gadot
She has the intelligent eyes and the intimidating look I imagined Athena to have. All she needs is contacts.
8. ARTEMIS
Natalia Dyer
This is the one I am least sure about. Artemis is supposed to look like a teenager and I couldn’t find anyone who better suited the image I had in mind. Perhaps a young Leighton Meester?
9. APOLLO
Sam Claflin
I know he has gotten a lot older after Hunger Games, but this is EXACTLY how I pictured Apollo while reading the books.
10. HERMES
Colin Morgan
Curly black hair? Blue eyes? Elfish features? Can rock a suit? Colin Morgan is your man.
11. HERA
Rene Russo
A lot of us tend to forget this because of the things she has done, but Hera is supposed to have a motherly look. She is the goddess of marriage and childbirth after all. And Rene Russo did kick a little ass as Frigga, so she would make a good Hera, in my opinion.
12. HEPHAESTUS
John Rhys-Davies
13. DEMETER
Nicole Kidman

You Bring Me Home—Bonus Blurb: Starry Eyes
a/n: surprise lovies!!! I’ve really been missing Halani these days, so I decided to write a short blurb and give you a peek of what our faves have been up to since we last saw them. I had so much fun writing them again and I hope you enjoy this little weekend treat! Much love, Mel <3
Pairing: Hawai’i!Harry x Original Character
Word Count: 1.2k
Revisit You Bring Me Home here
“That one over there kinda looks like a pineapple,”
“Oh, sure. I see it now,”
“Do you really?”
“No,” Harry admits with a soft chuckle. “Not really, sweets,”
The corners of Alani’s mouth ease into a fond smile as she curls deeper into his side. “Yeah, me either. Constellation gazing is way harder than cloud gazing,”
“Nah. Just have to know what you’re looking for,” Harry offers matter-of-factly. He runs the pad of his left thumb over Alani’s knuckles while the right one lines up beneath the northern star.
“Since when did you add ‘astronomer’ to your already impressive repertoire?”
“Since I kinda discovered I have a knack for it,”
“Is that so?” Alani presses, turning her head to scrutinize the boy lounging beside her. “Do tell how you came to this revelation,”
Harry’s throat tightens ever so slightly as he considers the backstory already playing in his head. He reminisces on the long, solitary nights spent on hotel balconies as his way of unwinding after a high energy performance. After leaving everything on stage, he liked having a moment just for himself, the stars, and the silvery moon shining overhead—the only moon present in his life those days, albeit not the one he was truly searching for. It hardly seems like a story worth telling after all the time that had passed and the healing that had taken place between them. The six months following Harry and Alani’s reunion in New York were full of immense efforts to rebuild trust, and it was worth every second to be able to return to the very same island where it all began, feeling as blissful as ever. But despite that growth, there were still moments just like this one where the pair had to face the uncomfortable reality of their falling out and the effects it had on them as individuals.
“I used to do a lot of stargazing,” Harry admits shyly. “On tour,”
Tour. Synonymous for ‘our breakup’ and less emotionally charged, though it still makes Alani’s stomach turn.
“Oh,” she swallows, eyes glued to the constellations above.
“It brought me a sort of comfort,” Harry elaborates. “Cause no matter where you are, you’re always looking at the same stars. In London. In New York. Hawai’i. I used to imagine you doing the same thing, and even though we weren’t on good terms back then, I figured that at least we had the stars,”
Alani’s heart nearly crumbles at his admission and she props herself up on one elbow to search his face. The tension in his muscles instantly relaxes under the gentle touch of her fingers combing through the curls at the nape of his neck. While they both acknowledge that neither of them were entirely at fault for the temporary break in their relationship, it still stings every time that period of their life is mentioned. Thankfully, they knew it was just that: a period. A blip. A minor smudge on the bigger picture. What truly matters to them in this moment is finally being together again under the endless expanse of shimmering stars. The same stars of the exact same night sky without a single mile of distance between them.
“You know that is...kind of depressing,” Alani jokes lightly. “But also incredibly sweet. And romantic. And such a you thing to do, sunshine,”
Harry laughs softly before leaning in closer so that his dimpled grin hovers inches away from Alani’s mouth. As she slots her lips between his and her lungs fill with the scent of his vanilla cologne, she marvels over the fact that every kiss they share feels just as euphoric as the very first one.
“Speaking of romantic gestures,” Harry adds with his index finger extended to the sky above. “See that curved constellation right there?”
“The one that kinda looks like a smiley face?”
“Yeah, that one,”
“What about it?” Alani questions, already nestling under Harry’s arm draped over her shoulder.
“That’s Corona Borealis,” he explains. “The legend goes that the Greek god Dionysus presented this really beautiful crown to Ariadne, the daughter of the second king of Crete, when they fell in love. After Ariadne died, the crown was placed in the heavens so she would live on forever and it became, you know, a symbol of Dionysus’ devotion to her,”
“That is romantic,” Alani hums.
Harry carefully reaches into his back pocket for a folded slip of paper as he continues his memorized astronomy lesson. “And do you see that star juuust beneath the apex of the crown?”
“Yeah,”
“Well that is the star now known as ‘Halani,’”
“Halani? As in—?”
“—Our names put together,” Harry confirms with a rosy tint in his cheeks. “It’s cheesy, I know,”
Alani giggles, but her eyes sting as the realization of his gesture sets in. “Oh my god, it’s perfect. You really bought us a star?”
“We’ve already got the sun and the moon. What’s another celestial body?”
“I can’t believe you sometimes,” Alani murmurs with her forehead pressed gently against his. “And here I thought I was slick for throwing a couple of pillows and blankets into the back of Stevie,”
Harry chuckles lightly, feigning offense as he sticks out a hand to pat the side of the Bronco. “Hey, I love this date idea. And I know how much effort must’ve gone into taking her top off. Stevie’s a real lady,”
“You are such a dork,”
“Hope you wined and dined her first,”
“I think we should end this bit,” Alani rolls her eyes playfully. “It feels weird now that the actual Stevie and I are on a first name basis,”
“And you have yet to tell her about her vehicular namesake. Honestly if you don’t, I will,” Harry threatens with the most serious expression he can muster.
Alani giggles and buries her face back into the side of his neck. A shiver runs through her spine from both the light graze of her boyfriend’s fingertips and the soft breeze picking up. Harry presses a soothing kiss to her hairline and checks the time on his phone. He can hardly believe that it’s already a few minutes past midnight, though time had always seemed to elude the pair when they were together.
“Should we head back now?”
“Do we have to?” Alani yawns. “Sleeping on the side of the road under the moonlight is romantic, right?”
Harry grins as he pulls her closer with an arm slung over her shoulders. “It would be a nice view to wake up to. And we practically have a monopoly over this lookout, anyway,”
“Exactly. Plus I don’t think I’m ready to part with our star just yet,”
“But that’s the great thing about it,” Harry counters. “It’ll always be there no matter where we go. All you have to do is look up,”
Alani tilts her chin to the sky, but it isn’t their star that she’s admiring in this moment. She studies the slope of Harry’s nose and the contours of his lips under the light of the waning moon and her heart fills with so much affection, she worries it’ll burst.
“I still can’t believe you bought us a star,” she muses incredulously. “How did I get so lucky?”
“I’m the lucky one, sweets. I love you.”
“I love you, too. Forever and always.”

Sally McKenna Playlist
Masterlist
I listen to this playlist so much it’s just ahh. As of the time I’m writing this, this bad boy is almost exactly 3 and a half hours long
Occasional little blurbs under the songs that are... interesting
Playlist link
“R U Mine?” by Arctic Monkeys
I go crazy 'cause here isn't where I wanna be And satisfaction feels like a distant memory And I can't help myself, all I Wanna hear her say is "Are you mine?" Well, are you mine?
How could I not put some Arctic Monkeys for Sally. They scream Sally vibes.
“The Cult of Dionysus” by The Orion Experience
I'm feeling devious You're looking glamorous Let's get mischievous And polyamorous Wine and women and wonderful vices Welcome to the cult of Dionysus
At first this song might seem a little weird, but it is quite the banger once you get into it
“I Miss Having Sex But At Least I Don’t Want To Die” by Waterparks
I miss having sex but at least I don't wanna die anymore And I think that's pretty cool I miss seeing the red on your face when I made you blush, hey But I think it's fine, it's cool
This song is such a mood I can’t even.
“summer depression” by girl in red
Pretty face with pretty bad dreams No one knows i cry in my sleep Waking up feeling like shit It's a normal thing to feel like this
I don't care I'm feeling down I wanna stay home Never go outside Summer depression comes every year I just want to disappear
Do you listen to girl in red because I sure do
“OK” by Wallows
I'm getting too close You say you love me most It's hard to trust it even though I want to Need to get this shit out of my head Before I flip this on myself instead
I’m in an unofficial girl band called Sugar Tits and this is one of the songs we’re going to cover. I feel like Sally would appreciate this.
“505″ by Arctic Monkeys
I'm going back to 505 If it's a seven hour flight or a forty-five minute drive In my imagination you're waiting, lying on your side With your hands between your thighs
Stop and wait a sec Oh, when you look at me like that, my darling What did you expect? I probably still adore you with your hands around my neck Or I did last time I checked
This song SCREAMS Sally and I stand by that
“Gold Dust Woman - 2004 Remaster” by Fleetwood Mac
Did she make you cry Make you break down Shatter your illusions of love And is it over now do you know how Pick up the pieces and go home.
I can’t not put a Fleetwood Mac song
“Dontmakemefallinlove” by Cuco
I don't think I'm meant to be with you I don't wanna make you sad All the time just feeling bad Girl, don't make me fall in love with you I don't think I'm right for you I'm just disappointing you
Angsty Sally not feeling good enough
“Prom Queen” by Beach Bunny
Teach me how to be okay I don't want to downplay my emotions They say beauty is pain You'll only be happy If you look a certain way
Sally vibes, man
“3 Nights” by Dominic Fike
Three nights at the motel Under streetlights In the city of palms Call me what you want, when you want, if you want And you can call me names if you call me up
Hotel Cortez love affair with our girl Sally
“Marlboro Nights” by Lonely God
I don't wanna go to school tomorrow I can't study Thinking about you And you know I always do I don't wanna go to sleep tonight when I can stay up Thinking about you And you know I always do
This is teen Sally and it is not up for debate
“Paper Thin Hotel” by Matt Maltese
I listened to your kisses at the door I never heard the world so clear before You ran your bath and you began to sing I felt so good I couldn't feel a thing I stood there with my ear against the wall I was not seized by jealousy at all In fact a burden lifted from my soul I learned that love was out of my control
A lot of these songs I have cried to and thinking about angsty Sally makes it even harder not to cry. Picture poor Sally being trapped in the Cortez and having to witness someone she love be with another person. How can you not be sad thinking about that?
“Lonely Eyes” by The Front Bottoms
You've got me stuck to where I'm sittin' Lookin' at your eyes And I know I'm so pathetic I wouldn't move to save my life And they tell me that you're lonely It's no surprise When you walk around all day wearing those Lonely, lonely, lonely eyes
Lonely bb
“me & ur ghost” by blackbear
I'm not alone It's just me and your ghost And this cripplin' depression I thought I learned my lesson But, I threw out my phone And I burned all your clothes And now I'm not alone It's just me and your ghost
You could take this literally or metaphorically. I’d argue that it works either way.
“Cigarettes On Patios” by BabyJake
I was smoking cigarettes on patios I was throwing money in the air Maybe I should pick that shit back up Bet my night on love Here we go again
This song is extremely repetitive, but the vibe fits.
“Sex n’ Drugs” by Abhi The Nomad
Born faceless Please save me My soul's tainted It's how I've been born I've worn patience Please save me I'm more tasteful than ever before
Sally’s theme song and overall lifestyle
“Foreplay” by Jalen Santoy
First they tell you that they love you Then they ask where you coming from Like you the only one feeling how you feeling Then you lie just to make it sound appealing
I love you The things that cross my mind while I'm by myself I hate you These things go through my mind while I'm by myself I fuck you These things run through my mind while I'm by myself Well fuck you It's always on my mind, think I need some help
Find me vibin’ to this. Sally dealing with fake ass bitches.
“hot girl bummer” by blackbear
Fuck you, and you, and you I hate your friends and they hate me too I'm through, I'm through, I'm through This that hot girl bummer anthem Turn it up and throw a tantrum
Hot girl summer Sally
“1 SIDED LOVE” by blackbear
You're too busy talking over me to hear what I'm saying You're too high to realize I see Through the smile that you're faking You're so into yourself Everyone else is overrated And everything's changing Is your heart worth breaking?
I could cry to this. Actually now that I think about it, I have cried to this and Sally would too.
“Easier” by 5 Seconds of Summer
Is it easier to stay? Is it easier to go? I don't wanna know, oh But I know that I'm never, ever gonna change And you know you don't want it any other way
An angry vibe
“Wrong” by Ally Hills
I can't keep on living with a delicate mind If I make a coffee, can we act like we're fine? When we were tangled in the sheets And waking up in our bed 'Cause now you strangle me in my sleep And I wake up with you in my head
Oh oh Oh oh I thought you loved me
A sad post break up vibe
“Space” by Ally Hills
You don't even care that my clothes aren't there. You needed the hanger space. You don't even mind 'cause you don't waste time Filling in all the blanks.
I wish you were sad for a day so you would know how it tastes to be lonely I wish you would stay in for a night to see what it's like fading slowly
Another sad post break up vibe
“Liability” by Lorde
Baby really hurt me Crying in the taxi He don't wanna know me Says he made the big mistake of dancing in my storm Says it was poison So I guess I'll go home Into the arms of the girl that I love The only love I haven't screwed up She's so hard to please But she's a forest fire
Ok, but try to listen to this song while sad and not cry??? I could cry to this even if I’m not sad. It just comes on and I’m like “yeah bitch I am a liability.”
“All Girls Are The Same” by Juice WRLD
Ten minutes, she tell me it would take ten minutes To break my heart, oh no she didn't Fuck livin', I'ma drown in my sorrow Fuck givin', I'ma take not borrow And I'm still sinnin', I'm still losin' my mind I know I been trippin', I'm still wasting my time All the time given, am I dyin? Am I livin'? It's fuck feelings, my sorrow go up to the ceilin'
Heartbroken gal
“The Louvre” by Lorde
I am your sweetheart psychopathic crush Drink up your movements, still I can't get enough I overthink your p-punctuation use Not my fault, just a thing that my mind do
A rush at the beginning I get caught up, just for a minute But lover, you're the one to blame, all that you're doing Can you hear the violence? Megaphone to my chest
CRASHING INTO LOVE WITH RECKLESS SALLY
“Writer In The Dark” by Lorde
Break the news, you're walking out To be a good man for someone else Sorry, I was never good like you Stood on my chest and kept me down Hated hearing my name on the lips of a crowd Did my best to exist just for you
Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark Now she's gonna play and sing and lock you in her heart Bet you rue the day you kissed a writer in the dark
Angsty song writer Sally
“Sims” by Lauv
I wish that you and I lived in the Sims We could build a house and plant some flowers and have kids But we're both at some trashy Halloween party downtown And I'll probably never see you again I wish that we lived on a VHS I'd erase the things I said and that I'll probably say again Hit rewind on all the times I got lost in my head But I guess I'll never see you again I'll probably never see you again
Ok hang with me for a second here. Sally leaving the Cortez in her one night of freedom. She meets someone at a Halloween party and they hit it off, but she doesn’t think to get her contact information or anything, so she spends the next year thinking of seeing the mysterious girl again.
“Everybody Talks” by Neon Trees
It started with a whisper And that was when I kissed her And then she made my lips hurt I could hear the chit chat Take me to your love shack Mamas always gotta back track When everybody talks back
Sally can take me to her love shack anytime
“prom dress” by mxmtoon
I can't help the fact I like to be alone It might sound kinda sad, but that's just what I seem to know I tend to handle things usually by myself And I can't ever seem to try and ask for help
I'm sitting here, crying in my prom dress I'd be the prom queen if crying was a contest
The last line screams teenage Sally, but also Sally now too?
“i hope your whole life sux” by blackbear
The truth yeah, is I've been up for days on cocaine The truth is I've been up for days tryin' not to think about you I hope that I'm the reason that you can't sleep I hope that your whole life sucks without me The truth is I've been up for days thinkin' 'bout you
Unhealthy coping mechanisms from our favorite druggie
Please don’t do cocaine. Cocaine ruin yo brain.
“Teeth” by 5 Seconds of Summer
Some days, you're the only thing I know Only thing that's burning when the nights grow cold Can't look away, can't look away Beg you to stay, beg you to stay, yeah Sometimes, you're a stranger in my bed Don't know if you love me or you want me dead Push me away, push me away Then beg me to stay, beg me to stay
Spicy Sally
“Fuck Up” by Tana Mongeau
'Cause I'm a fuck up, and I'm so fucked up And all these voices in my head won't shut the fuck up 'Cause I'm a fuck up, and I'm so fucked up And it's 5 p.m. and I just woke the fuck up
This song is me, but also Sally.
“hell is where i dreamt of u and woke up alone” by blackbear
I'm in need of moderation Nah, I need a fucking break 'Cause I just railed down enough lines tonight To spell your first and last name
And it's all because I dreamt of you And woke up alone What a wonderful tone To bring you back home
I don’t even do cocaine, but this shit strikes something within me
“Idfc” by blackbear
Tell me pretty lies Look me in the face Tell me that you love me Even if it's fake 'Cause I don't fucking care, at all
Just tell Sally you love her
“Weekend” by Club House
I know you always say that you're alright But then you want to talk on the low And if you wanna a break, baby we can Hit the rooftop all alone Let me make you smile, baby all night Fuck around maybe get stoned You know that we can do it every weekend But you just wanna talk on the low
Care free loving with Sally
“Supplier!” by Crisaunt
Baby girl All of this fighting got me tired All this love that you desire All this effort you require I cannot be your supplier
I’m pretty sure I put this on here for vibes
“Model Student” by Grady
Growing up, i got used to laughs Suddenly JanSport really had my back I came into the world an outcast I didn´t dress the same I didn´t act the same But the popular kids Peaked around 17 And the only peaking i did Was looking for a fuck to give
Sally doesn’t give a fuck
“Life Inside” by Verzache
My life inside Wish I could get out and go ride a bike Head in the wind, and know what it's like And wear my ones like we did all the time Please, don't remind me 'bout my life inside I waste on my phone, sleep most the time Wake up to texts from girls I used to like Try not to text back, the light hurts my eyes Smoke 'til I'm knocked out
Trapped in Hotel Cortez Sally
“Haunt You” by Social House
Better off this way but I want you, want you, want you Sometimes I just wanna fucking Call you, call you, call you Never thought something beautiful could Haunt you, haunt you, haunt you
Shout out to @make--your--life--spectacular for telling me about this song because it is really good and fits Sally’s vibes

Sally is a crash and burn together kind of gal
“STFU” by mansionz, Spark Master Tape

Annoyed Sally vibes
“fuck, i’m lonely” by Lauv, Anne-Marie
Fuck, I'm lonely, I'm lonely, I'm lonely as Fuck, come hold me, come hold me, come hold me It's been me, myself, and why did you go, did you go? Oh, fuck, I'm lonely, I'm lonely, I'm lonely, lonely,
I miss those nights when you would come over Spent all night just tryna get closer That was June and now it's October I don't want, don't wanna get over
Fuck, Sally’s lonely
“If You’re Too Shy (Let Me Know)” by The 1975
"Maybe I would like you better if you took off your clothes I'm not playing with you, baby I think that you should give it a go" She said, "Maybe I would like you better if you took off your clothes I wanna see, and stop thinking If you're too shy, then let me Too shy, then let me know"
Sally is the “she” you speak of
“Instead of My Room” by Charlie Burg
We are simpatico Don't wanna let you go I wanna get to know (I wanna go out and see the new Star Wars with you) Play me another song I want to sing along Give my a melody (I heard the Hunger Games wasn't as good as the book)
Teen vibes, but also parts of this are talking about music and music is definitely a love language for Sally
“pharmacy” by Isaac Dunbar
Mmm, hurt me I kind of developed a taste for it Mmm, hurt me I want the pain between my lips
Feed it to me softly From your purple and blue fingers Constricted to only you To whom I seem to linger See me climb too high You cut the vine you had to hinder me
Prescribe yourself to me You're the only remedy Have me begging on my knees You're my pharmacy
Sally is into this and you can’t tell me any differently
“Daze Inn - Acoustic” by Carlie Hanson
We spent last night trippin' at the Daze Inn Lost in time like we got on a spaceship Tell me all your dreams when you wake up Carry me from the pool to the bathtub
Daze Inn = Hotel Cortez
“Last Nite” by The Strokes
Last night, she said "Oh, baby, don't feel so down Oh, it turns me off When I feel left out" So I, I turned round Oh, baby, gonna be alright It was a great big lie 'Cause I left that night, yeah
V I B E S
“Lonely Times” by Hot Flash Heat Wave
Lemme tell ya a little story fresh out of my dormitory I didn't know where things were going City lights felt like drowning in the ocean Late nights lying in my bed with all these thoughts swimming through my head Lonely times drifting in my dreams, I feel alright when I'm drifting, I’m drifting
Sally reminiscing on her times before the Cortez
“blackboard.edu” by Arlie
Don't listen to me I just need a good night's sleepAnd you keep me up all night Can't talk right I'm fallin' in my clothes And even though I'm feeling like death I can't be upset 'Cause I finally know
If you can’t tell, I love teen AUs
“7PM” by Lilacs, Lizzy McAlpine
I'm losing my mind I'm reading the news for the hell of it I'm wondering if she's on your mind Losing track of time I'm learning to cook for the hell of it And I'm wondering if she's by your side Tonight
Trapped in the Cortez and can’t go out and be with anyone
“i’m so tired...” by Lauv, Troye Sivan
I'm so tired of love songs, tired of love songs Tired of love songs, tired of love Just wanna go home, wanna go home Wanna go home, whoa
Sick of them damn love songs
“So Alright, Cool, Whatever” by The Happy Fits
How could you ever really know? If you never look You don't know what you'll find I've got an effervescent glow If you'd show me all the dark parts of your mind.
I wanna be with you. I wanna be with you. I wanna be barely hangin' on.
Sally falls HARD
“Kilby Girl” by The Backseat Lovers
I overheard that she was 19 with a fake ID and a nose ring Those kind of girls tend to know things better than I do And I'm dying to figure out what she's hiding She's playing it cool but she's lying, better than I do
TEEN SALLY
“New Girl” by FINNEAS
I wanna scratch your surface I wanna feel your groove I wanna be your needle I wanna lick your wound You wanna play with fire? Stick and poke tattoo? You wanna play, my new girl? I wanna play with you
The energy, the presence, the vibes
“Chicken Tenders” by Dominic Fike
We settled but it never felt right 'cause we can't keep still And we try to fight the way everything feels When we step out of line I met your gaze and it was love that we were makin' And she spoke a different language There was no need for translation And I ordered chicken fingers to my room, girl But we got some things to do first
This song is something that’s for sure

(for the ask thing) any book/tv show/movie/song recommendations?
BRO! I heckin got you man! Now, I’m gonna skip the song and book recommendation bit because that sorta thing isn’t really my scene. BUT! In terms of TV? My rec list is like a mile long. I’m gonna include a read-more line, actually.
BBC Merlin: You know I had to put this on the list. But the fact that you’re on my blog means you’ve probably watched this one, so I won’t go into detail about it. Available on Netflix
Mob Psycho 100: Just a cute, sweet story about a bunch of psychic kids trying to kill each other. A story with this much fighting has no right to be so wholesome. Mob is just a good boy, he doesn’t deserve all this! Fair warning, its messages about identity, self love, and growth WILL make you feel Emotions. Available on various anime pirating websites
Red vs Blue: The found family game is SO strong in this one. By far the best found family plot/dynamic I have ever and will ever experience. The characters are all so solid, yknow? Like it took me three rewatches to understand the plot, but I didn’t even care because I loved the characters SO MUCH. It’s also really, really funny (although some of the jokes have aged a bit poorly tbh). Basically about a bunch of space marines who goof off and accidentally dismantle corrupt governments along the way. Available on Youtube
Supernatural: Is it cringey? Yeah. Does the fandom suck? Also yeah. Is Destiel overrated? BIG yeah. But it’s got monsters, magic, family, and a plot that doesn’t revolve around romance - and really, what more could you ask for? And sure, a lot of people don’t really like the later seasons, but idk I actually prefer them. Season 15 has me THRIVING. I mean come on - character vs author?! Fighting the guy who literally wrote you into existence because he doesn’t want to give your story a happy ending?! Say what you will about Supernatural, but it’s one of the most imaginative shows I’ve ever seen. Available on Netflix
Avatar the Last Airbender: You like stellar animation, intricate worldbuilding/magicbuilding, and a perspective on war that is surprisingly mature for a kids show? Check it out. This show is without a doubt one of the best animated series of all time. Go on. Watch it. It’ll change your life. Available on Netflix
The Umbrella Academy: Time-travelling assassins. Superheroes. Ghosts. Talking monkeys. Murder mysteries. Baller soundtracks. This show will never give you what you expect. I don’t even think I could properly describe it to you. Available on Netflix
Detective Conan: An anime. It’s about a teen detective - think Nancy Drew but bloodier - who witnesses a crime and is fed an experimental poison in order to keep him from telling anyone. But instead of killing him, the poison turns him into a 6-year-old. So now he’s got to solve crimes and take down a criminal organization while in the body of a child. Naturally, shenanigans ensue. Fair warning, the main character becomes a bit of a Mary Sue in later episodes, but the first 300 or so are pretty fun. A few episodes are available on Netflix, but not any of the good ones. You’ll need an anime pirating website for that
Knives Out: My favourite movie ever, of all time. It’s a murder mystery that both subverts and pays homage to its parent genre in all the right places. It’s funny, it’s intelligent, and has a spectacular ending! Although I do wish the fandom would stop being so horny for Ransom, I mean he’s literally racist...No clue where you can find this tbh, I saw it in theatres
Derry Girls: Now I’m not normally a big fan of realistic fiction/sitcom stuff. Despite how funny they are, I’ve not even watched The Office or Parks and Rec because that normal daily life stuff just doesn’t peak my interest. And yet, somehow this story about a group of Irish high schoolers just has me enthralled. Very funny, very well-written, give it a watch. Available on Netflix
Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Another anime. Phenomenal animation? Check. Fascinating plot and characters? Check. Detailed magic system that gets my lore-obsessed heart fluttering? Big heckin check. So basically two kids try to use Fantasy Science to bring their mom back to life, only the experiment fails and has some pretty nasty consequences - one boy loses his arm and leg, while the other loses his entire body and has his soul bound to a suit of armour. Now they gotta go through government conspiracies, ethical dilemmas, and Daddy Issues to try and get their bodies back. Available on Netflix
The Disastrous Life of Saiki K: Yet another anime. I know, I know, I’m a nerd, get over it. This show doesn’t have a complex plot or even complex characters, tbh, but what it does have is some amazing humour. It’s extremely funny, and it’s also just a nice show to kick back and relax to. Basically this guy who’s so op that he could rewrite the laws of reality on a whim is stuck dealing with relationship drama in high school despite being very, very asexual and very, very tired. Mostly he just uses his powers to avoid people and eat junk food, which is honestly a mood. Available on Netflix
Scooby Doo! Mystery Incorporated: Honestly I’d recommend almost anything that’s Scooby Doo-related because that was my childhood obsession. I used to have like 20 of the movies on DVD before my mom gave them all away. To this day I still love Scooby Doo, and watch it whenever I get the chance. But if you ask any SD fan, they’ll probably tell you that Mystery Incorporated is the best, most intelligent, most creative installment in the franchise. And they’re right (although I do wish there was less relationship drama...) Available on Netflix
Evil Genius: This is a documentary series about the Collar Bomb Robbery. Now, despite what the above list might indicate, I actually watch a LOT of documentaries, and if I were here to recommend all of them then we would be here all day. Not really ‘funny’ like the other entries on this list, it’s actually rather tragic, but definitely a cerebral viewing experience. Available on Netflix
Screwball: Now this is a documentary that IS funny. It’s about drug scandals in baseball. But the dramatic scene re-enactments are done with child actors that are all wearing fake beards and pretending to be drug dealers. It’s not only a fascinating subject, but it’s got amazing editing and visuals that have me in awe. Available on Netflix
Behind the Curve: Yet another documentary. This one’s about the rise of the Flat Earth movement. You’ll spend most of the time on the verge of having a stroke because of how stupid it all is. Available on Netflix
The Movies That Made Us: Okay okay okay last documentary on the list I swear. This one’s exactly what it says on the tin. It’s a series talking about the behind-the-scenes production of iconic movies like Home Alone and Ghostbusters. I eagerly await the second season. Available on Netflix
Monster Factory: If you’re familiar with the McElroy brothers and their brand of humour, you’ll love this. Griffin and Justin team up to make the most disturbing avatars they can create using video game character creators. The origins of the Final Pam meme. If I had a shirt with a quote from Monster Factory on it, I’d die a happy man. Available on Youtube
Baman Piderman: The dumbest show I have ever watched, but it’s so adorable and stupid and I love it so much. It doesn’t really have a plot, but later episodes allude to the presence of one and I’m upset because there are so many mysteries/questions hinted at and we’ll never get answers because it’s been abandoned. PLEASE watch it. Available on Youtube
Stranger Things: Okay, season 2 was a bit of a let-down imo, but season 1 was ICONIC and the Scoops Troop subplot in season 3 deserved its own freakin spinoff. I’m not joking. I didn’t even like s3 all that much, but the only reason it’s my favourite is because the Scoops Troop plot was so great. People call this show ‘horror’ but I don’t think it’s scary enough for that, although it is admittedly kinda spooky. If you like 80s nostalgia and the horror aesthetic, then I’d give it a watch (Do it for Scoops Troop. Do it for Robin). Available on Netflix
Jack and the Cuckoo-Clock Heart: Despite my overwhelming love for this film, I’ll be the first to admit it’s kinda mediocre. The plot is weird and the romance feels forced, but despite its flaws it manages to be one of my favourite movies. Mostly I just like it for the unique concept and beautiful ending. Also the music is off the par man. Probably because the writer/producer of the movie was the lead singer for a French band called Dionysus (what? I do my research). Available on Netflix
Wakfu: I haven’t seen past season 3, but so far it’s pretty good. You go in thinking it’s just a wholesome action/adventure show about a kid who can create portals - but then it just. Sucks you in. From its bopping theme song to its fantastic found family to the unique worldbuilding, you very quickly fall in love with it. It’s got a cool plot and also talking dragons, and it doesn’t get better than that. Available on Netflix
Mystery Skulls Animated: Technically not a TV show so much as it is a series of animated music videos with a plot, but I’ll be damned if this isn’t one of the greatest things of all time. It’s basically Scooby Doo but if Shaggy got possessed by a demon and killed Fred, causing Fred to become a ghost hellbent on revenge-killing Shaggy in return. And if Scooby was an ancient Japanese spirit that bit off Shaggy’s arm, forcing him to wear a metal prosthetic. Yeah, MSA is wild. It’s only got three videos out so far, with a fourth one coming out this October, but there’s already so much lore! Available on Youtube
Don’t Hug Me I’m Scared: Ah yes, yet another cringey entry on this list. But you know what? Cringe culture is dead!!! And despite its fandom being...like that...DHMIS really is a cool show. Think if Sesame Street was like haunted or something. The episodes about creativity and telling time remain the most unsettling, imo. Definitely worth a watch. Available on Youtube
Inanimate Insanity: Oh boy. Am I seriously recommending you dip your little fingies into the object fandom? Yes. Yes I am. This show is so obscure it makes freakin Detective Conan look popular. At its core it’s a parody of Total Drama Island and Survivor but with anthropomorphized inanimate objects as characters (hence the name). Season 2 is actually really, really good and surprisingly competent. You just gotta get through season 1 first. Available on Youtube
The X-Files: Wow, a live action series on this list? Who woulda thought??? But seriously, this show is really fun. Memes and jokes aside, I love it. Scully and Mulder are fun characters with great chemistry (both platonic and romantic), the Lone Horsemen are hilarious, and every episode is a unique adventure into the most creative acid trips the human mind could conceive of. Phenomenal from start to finish (if you ignore the last season). I have no clue where you would watch this. Pirate it, probably
Buzzfeed Unsolved: Two idiots investigate cold cases and haunted locales while being utter dumbasses about it. You know the “hey demons it’s be ya boi” meme? That came from these guys. Available on Youtube
Kingdom: Ngl, I didn’t go into this expecting zombies. Or for it to take place during Korean feudalism, for that matter. But mediocre dubbing aside, this show has such a clever concept. It takes the zombie apocalypse genre and gives refreshing, unique twists to old tropes that they feel like something new. Seo-bi is my wife and she deserves all the love and appreciation in the world, and those are just Facts. Available on Netflix
My Hero Academia: Superhero high school anime. I personally am not a fan of later episodes/arcs, but the first three seasons are pretty dang good. Diverse, colourful ensemble cast that you easily grow to adore, interesting commentary on disability (although I’m not qualified to give any actual takes on that), and a school curriculum that makes me very, very concerned for the wellbeing of these children. Plus all the superpowers - aka ‘quirks’ - are super imaginative and, well, quirky! I just wish people would stop shipping the main character with his childhood bully...You’ll need to pirate this one too lmao
Danny Phantom: The highlight of this show is its ‘phandom’, because unlike someone (*cough* Butch Hartman), we’re not a bunch of cowards. It’s about a guy who messes around with his parents’ lab stuff and accidentally acquires the ability to die! Well, half-die. He can turn into a ghost and fight other ghosts. Although the show never explores the existential, traumatic fallout of being kinda-sorta-dead, the potential for something deep and emotional is there. Plus there is a LOT of accidental subtext for a Big LGBT+ Metaphor. So much so that the Trans Danny theory is basically canon. Uhhh not available on Netflix anymore so it’s time to whip out your pirate hat, matey
And there you have it! Like I said, I have a lot of TV recommendations. And I just KNOW I’m forgetting a ton, but this is already really long so we’ll have to cut off here.
Thanks for the ask! <3

Gods & Myths
Prompt: J-Hope + 3. A breathy demand: “Kiss me” - and what the other person does to respond.
Setting/AU: College AU
Warnings: Alcohol use, frat party, sexual tension, lewd humour etc
Word Count: 3,278
You didn’t want to be here. Every fiber of your being wanted desperately to be anywhere that wasn’t at the Gods and Myths party at Ravenwood Academy. It’s not that you hated parties, or despised dressing up, rather, it was that you hated ending up alone at these things. Your friends always came with you, spotted someone they were crushing on and left without fail. Leaving you alone for the remainder of the evening, easy prey for drunk creeps to hit on. Usually you left before they saw you all alone, in your mind you wondered if you had a huge neon sign above you that said Easy Target.
Every time you brought this fact up with them their responses were the same. “Well maybe you should try it sometime.” “It’s not going to hurt you to have fun. Live a little.” “Just do, don’t think about it for once in your life.”
All of that was easier said than done though. Overthinking was a skill of yours, one excelled at. Your friends meant well, you knew that, but it hurt to realise time and time again that in some aspects, they just truly didn’t understand you. You weren’t as outgoing as them and apparently didn’t have anywhere near as high a sex drive as they did. They said you were too picky while you thought that sometimes they weren’t picky enough.
You wanted to be the person who could just switch off and live in the moment but you were too observant, too analytical and too concerned with how what you did at any given moment would impact your life. Other people got to finish class and leave their academic commitments in their dorm, not concerned with how their actions in the night would impact them in the future but not you, the burden of responsibility weighed heavy on your shoulders. You had to get good grades so that you could get a good job and a good career. That was what had been ingrained into you since you were a small child. Romance and frivolity just weren’t luxuries that you could afford.
Regardless of how you feel about social gatherings, you’re here, sitting on Minhee’s bed with Sora while they brainstorm costumes for each of you to wear. According to them this party was a big deal and proper thought should go into your outfit. In your mind it was just middle ground between angels & devils and toga party. Wear a coloured sheet and something on your head and drink. It seemed simple to you but to your friends, it was more. They were well known for their partying ways and impeccable costumes. How you ended up with these two as your best friends you’ll never know, but you wouldn’t have it any other way… most of the time.
Minhee stands in front of her wardrobe facing the two of you with her arms crossed in front of her, resolute in her statement. “As a history major I refuse to allow the three of us to be basic. There will be enough Aphrodite’s, Hera’s, Athena’s and Persephone’s in attendance so we need something unique.”
“Why don’t we go as the three fates?” Sora offers as she flips through a Greek Mythology book.
Minhee shakes her head. “No, then we’d have to spend the entire night together so that our costumes made sense.”
“Wow, you make hanging out together sound like a punishment.” You remark.
Her eyes roll. “You know that’s not how I meant it. If we do a group costume then we have to stick together. At the biggest party of the academic year.” Next to you Sora nods. If she thinks this is convincing you that she wasn’t being harsh before, she’s sorely mistaken.
“What Minhee is trying to say is that Jaebum is going to be there and she wants to get that.” She chuckles as she looks at you. “We love you dearly, but we both have goals for this party, and apparently that means we need standalone costumes. Otherwise Minhee will be insufferable because she couldn’t jump JB’s bones because we did a group costume… which is not a crazy persons reasoning at all.”
You can’t help but laugh at Sora’s bluntness. You knew they’d both be wanting to impress their crushes and that they would not be sticking with you all night. Still, the reality of being alone at a party yet again kind of dampens the mood for you. “Then Minhee should be Nyx.” You state.
“Primordial goddess of the night?” She asks, to no one in particular.
You shrug. “Look if there was a goddess of determination to get that dick then I’d pick that one for you. This is the closest thing.”
Sora collapses into the bed in a fit of laughter at your words while Minhee feigns offence, doing her best to not laugh yet. “Are you calling me a skank?”
“Of course not. If I wanted to do that I’d have suggested Peitho.” Minhee sputters as her cool facade cracks and she joins Sora in a fit of laughter, doubling over and grabbing the wardrobe with her spare hand to brace herself as she laughs.
“You bitch.” She says as she regains her composure.
“Honestly, the lengths you go to for dick.” You do your best to sound nonchalant but a laugh breaks through.
“For that uncalled for comment you get to be Hecate, it’s not in the mythology books but I’m pretty sure she was a snarky biatch like you.” She points at Sora as you crack up laughing. “And you can be Kotys, you party animal.”
***
The party is going almost exactly how you imagined it would. The three of you arrived, wading through a crowd of multiple Hades, Persephone, Zeus, Hera, Apollo & Aphrodite costumes. Minhee and Sora are ecstatic that no one seems to have picked the goddesses that the three of you did but a small part of you wishes you could blend in with the crowd, it would make escaping drunk horny guys later so much easier.
You had to give it to the decorators. They had outdone themselves this year. The large dining hall had been transformed into a Greek paradise. There was a Mount Olympus in the back corner, a Dionysus themed bar, hanging gardens, beautifully draped sheets around fake columns. There were games all around the room, based off ancient Olympics and myths. You spotted a stone grotto where you had to trick Medusa, a makeshift river Styx, the list went on.
It was hard to believe that this was the dining hall. The spot where you usually sat for your meals was currently the entrance to hell and where you normally sat was Yoongi, dressed as Hades, trying to convince people to actually pay him money to be kept safe. You laughed to yourself, remembering the time that Minhee had her sights set on him only to be shut down because he didn’t want to fuck someone who didn’t know what an arpeggio was. She had been livid for weeks. She thought it was some kind of pasta. You and Sora hadn’t let her live it down, much to her displeasure.
The rest of his group are performing similar grifts around the room. Namjoon is at Mount Olympus, dressed as Zeus and giving orders as King of the Gods. Jimin is dressed as Eros and is wandering around pushing people together, daring them to kiss. Dressed is a loose statement given the minimal amount of coverage he has going for him but that kind of goes hand in hand with being the god of sexual desire, attraction, love and procreation. Jin is dressed as Plutus and in his drunken stupor keeps telling everyone “Opulence, I own everything!” Taehyung is behind the bar, dressed as Dionysus, reveling in getting partygoers drunk out of their brains. Jungkook is Heracles, doing upside down keg stands and challenging people to arm wrestling and Mario Kart, probably not exactly the picture of the greatest hero but he fits the strongest man on earth part of the brief. Hoseok is Caerus, flitting around the room to each of the games and convincing people to do things they normally wouldn’t, telling them he felt lucky about their odds of winning if they did as he suggested. Whoever put those 7 in charge as hosts for the evening was either out of their mind or a genius.
Shortly after arriving Sora directs you to the bar, making sure the three of you have drinks in your hands at all times then drags your trio over to a group who are playing a range of drinking games loosely based off mythology. So loosely that you’d wager that they were just playing normal drinking games and adding one greek work to them to fit the theme of the party. You glance at Minhee, thinking she might have hit the nail on the head with the goddess she picked for Sora, who raises a brow at you as if to say I was dead on right?
You stand back with Minhee while Sora leads the next round of games, completely in her element as the life of the party. Out of the corner of your eye you spot the very person who Minhee keeps searching for. She probably thinks she’s being subtle but to you she looks like a lost bird with how much her head is darting around as she scans the room. You nudge her, directing her attention towards her mark. “He’s over there when you’re ready to go throw yourself at him.”
She scoffs at you and smirks. “Don’t be ridiculous, I won’t need to throw myself at him, have you seen me in this dress?” To make sure you get the full effect she twirls and poses for you, her shamelessness making you cringe.
“Oh my god, just go already.”
Sora appears beside you, laughing. “Looks like I have perfect timing!” she says as she latches onto your arm, her grip ironclad, tugging it towards the centre of the group where the games are being played. “Come on, we’re playing the next game.”
“Wha-” you start to protest, refusing to budge from your spot. You don’t join in at these parties. You observe. You’re not the free spirited type. You don’t know the social cues or the rules for these games.
“No excuses. If you fuck up the game you drink, if you win you drink. Pretty simple really.” She holds onto your arm tightly, no intentions of letting you flee. “For once, try to enjoy yourself.” She says.
Begrudgingly you give up trying to escape. She knows you too well and she has no plans on letting go of you until you’re in the circle and the game is starting. There’s no escape now, not when you’re surrounded. Your anxiety spikes for a moment, wondering if all of the people around you know that you don’t fit in here. That little voice in your head tells you that they’re judging you, mocking you, no matter how hard you try to ignore it.
“What game have you been playing here?” Hoseok asks, appearing out of nowhere, his red locks wreathed in olive branches. That part of his costume irks you. Caerus was always described as bald, with one lock of hair, not a luscious soft looking full head of hair. At least he had the non aging, beautiful part down, because Hoseok was beautiful. His high cheekbones and strong jawline framed his face, inviting eyes and an infectious smile made him hard to resist. You have watched him from a distance at many parties, never actually interacting with words. A few times he caught you staring, only to raise an eyebrow at you and for you to avert your gaze. This is the closest you’d ever been to him at a party and you decide that it is incredibly unfair for him to look that good.
“Escape the Manticore.” Someone says at the same time as you say “Beer Pong.” Hoseok laughs as he moves to the center of the group. He raises his hands, beckoning those in the circle to listen to him.
“An excellent choice of game, however, might I suggest a change in proceedings before Jungkook/Heracles makes his way over here?” The noises from the group seem to lean towards agreeing to change games. Everyone knows that you can’t beat Jungkook at beer pong. The guy is stupidly good at it. Smiling, Hoseok continues. “Might I suggest Sirens Call?”
You scoff. “What’s that, truth or dare?” The crowd laughs at your comment.
“Closer to spin the bottle actually.” Hoseok responds, winking at you as he does so. “Alright, you lot” He says as he points to 7 others, Sora and yourself “are playing this round with me.” You do your best to ignore the wink, surely he does that to everyone. Like Sora, he’s always the life of the party. It probably doesn’t mean anything. Even if part of you wants it to.
Sora claps with glee as she realizes that his selection includes the man she’s been ogling all night, Shownu. He’s a mountain of a man with soft, kind eyes and Sora has been swooning over him for months. You know that she’ll shatter the bottle if it doesn’t land on him when she spins it.
“You look like you want to eat him alive Sora, maybe dial it down a notch.” You murmur.
Her eyes flit to yours for a moment, a mischievous grin on her face. “I’d rather climb him like a tree but eating works as well.”
You don’t get a chance to tell her to keep it in her pants as Hoseok produces a bottle and motions for the ten of you to sit on the floor. “The person spinning the bottle is the siren. Whoever the bottle lands on is their target. If their target succumbs to their call and kisses them they’re out of the game, Sirens were kind of evil guys, they lured men to their deaths. If you resist the siren for thirty seconds then you survive and they are out of the game.
The game progresses as drunken people lock lips and disappear from the game, often wandering off together to continue where they left off, much to Jimin’s delight. Shownu did his best to resist Sora, but your maniac of a friend legitimately climbed him when he refused her request for him to kiss her, straddling his hips and teasingly leaning in, ghosting kisses over his neck, face & mouth until he gave in and captured her lips with his. As she got up and lead Shownu away from the group she winked at you, happy to have secured her man for the night.
Hoseok spins the bottle next. You watch it spin round and round, wondering who it will land on and if they’re going to be able to resist his charms. To your surprise the bottle lands on you. You stare at it in mild shock. Hoseok isn’t supposed to get this close to you. No, you watch him from afar, wondering what it would be like to touch him, to be held by him, to kiss him. But those were only ever supposed to be thoughts, never a reality.
You watch with wide eyes as he crawls towards you, like a predator circling its prey. You don’t know if you are strong enough to resist him, not when his eyes were laser focused on you like that. He’d never looked at you like that before. Whenever he’d caught you staring at him he’d always kept that inviting look in his eyes but that was nowhere to be found right now. It felt like he was staring into your soul which unnerves you. You try to swallow but your throat feels dry, and your hand can’t seem to find your drink.
He closes the distance between the two of you quickly, stopping only once his arms are caging your legs where you sit. He is too close, so close that you can feel his breath fanning your neck, you can smell his cologne, you can’t concentrate. He licks his lips and leans forward, his mouth ghosting your ear. Breathily he says “Kiss me” then moves back slightly so that he can see your face.
If you do as he asks you’ll lose the game, but you will have kissed Jung Hoseok. That little voice inside your head tries to tell you that he’d only be kissing you because of the game, not because he has any interest in you. Another smaller voice speaks up, telling you so what if its only because of the game? You still get to kiss him and if the other voice is wrong, then you’ll have bagged Jung motherfucking Hoseok. Where is the loss for you here?
You stare at his lips longer than you care to admit, at his prominent cupids bow and soft looking lower lip, at the way he slightly smirks when he realises that you’re fixated on his mouth. It feels like aeons but in reality it takes only seconds for the two of you to stare at each other, your eyes flickering because for a moment Hoseok does look like a god, but one who is within your reach, and it causes a quiet breath to escape your lips.
Cautiously you inch forward, and Hoseok cups your cheek with his hand. He feels warm. You lean into his touch, letting yourself indulge in the moment. You press your lips into his, they are softer than you were expecting. He moves his head slightly and your lips slot together perfectly, his hand sliding into your hair. You could end it here, you had already failed the game and there was no need to continue the kiss.
Except that you don’t want it to end. You want more. You press into his lips harder, parting them, and you feel him smile into it as he deepens the kiss. Your hand grips his cloak, as if you’re scared he will let go of you and end this. The nature of the kiss shifts from a soft, sweet meeting of the mouths to a heated, passionate tangling of tongues. When you do break apart its because you both need air. His eyes are hooded and dark as he stares at you as if you are the only person in the room.
Gradually both of you realize that you have an audience and you blush furiously. Hoseok clears his throat and looks around, attempting to put on the mask of the host as he says. “That’s game over. You know how it works now, form your own teams and go.” He grabs your wrist and helps you stand, his eyes never leaving your face. It’s written all over his face, plain as day, that he wants to kiss you again. You want to kiss him again too, but not with so many people around.
“Come with me?” He asks.

Writer Notes: The Wicked + the Divine 44
Spoilers, obv.
I'm aware that this is either going to be a relatively short one or an epic one. The risk of the latter is that rather than just talking about the issue, for the first time I'm free to talk about the series as a whole, and so talk about some of those other choices. There'll be some of that, but it would warp the nature of the notes, and give some false perspective. I can talk about it being over now, sure, but talking about it all means I'm not talking about this element. Not least because I can't talk about it all – there's still the question of issue 45.
But still. There's a lot to talk about, and a lot of hard things in here to do. We knew where we going, but the devil is in the details. The devil's everywhere.
Jamie/Matt's Cover
Minerva finally gets her head-shot. I was a little worried that people would realise exactly what was happening to Minerva here, but I didn't see anyone realise she's falling, and speculate why. Of course, I knew what it was and couldn't not see it. That's how it works.
It's a striking last image though – this is an especially blank glance, in the middle of all the motion. Matt's pink/white nimbus is really powerful too.
Emma Rios/Miquel Muerto
Emma's one of our favourite artists, and we were so glad that we managed to get her before the end. Emma's always someone who gets this evocative drama of it all – this is obviously a momentous cover, but you don't know the moment until reading. Laura and Lucifer being a core relationship, and the hint of leaving. Miquel does strong, atmospheric things with the colours as well. It's a great cover to end the story on. On - Pretty Deadly is back on the same day as 45, and I can't wait. Gets!
IFC
In terms of minor things we did which have a big emotional effect, changing the gods' names to their human names was certainly one. It sits there and stings.
Page 1
This issue is particularly tightly wound, so we set the clock on the issue in this one page.
I had a couple of people wonder where the cops came from. I presume it's because the delay in publication – the "we have to go now because of woden's tape has revealed we're almost all complicit" is the only reason why they went for Minerva immediately.
For a page that's so tightly wound, Jamie does some great establishing here. Opening panel with the fire in top of Valhalla, to link to last issue. A shot with all these people in it – a character beat, and three extremely dialogue low panels.
Page 2
Riff on Better The Devil You Know.
The weird rhythm in WicDiv is the arcs-which-take-place-in-a-very-short-time and arcs-which-take-place-over-months. Faust act, Rising Action, Imperial Phase II, "Okay" are the over-a-short time. Fandemonium, Commercial Suicide, Imperial Phase I and Mothering Invention are the extended ones. The closest to one which does both is Faust Act, which spreads its action over a week or two.
Page 3
Lovely stuff in here with Jamie, in terms of character work – obviously this is Lucifer hamming it up, but seeing individual responses around the room is a hell of a thing. Minerva's a total mess here.
Valentine giving up clever insults at this point is probably a thing.
Page 4-5 "Bothersome" is a very Lucifer word. The expression in panel 2 is also key Lucifer – that eye-roll of it.
Laura's captions also arrive mid way through – key, as they're clearly going to be key. I was thinking of having them at the start of page 3 as well, but we can let us live in the moment.
Laura's performance tentacles is a lovely panel – seeing how Matt works the colours on the space. The blues fading to white, the reds. Honestly, this is making me miss working with Matt already, and seeing how good he and Jamie are together.
Callbacks here to Lucifer in the first arc – the cycle of it all.
"There were two girls in hell" makes me well up. |It's one of my favourite Jamie expressions in the issue.
Page 6-7
When planning the larger structure of WicDiv, I was aware that I made certain calls in hope I would be able to save people. The early "death" of the Heads was actually a way to protect them. I was aware that characters who were in play were far more likely to die, as they had more chances to do so. I knew I could likely save the heads, so by making them heads, I made it more likely.
I originally planned for Dionysus to die, but I couldn't bear it. His hubris was real, but the idea that someone could give so much without anyone really caring or doing something for him was too heart breaking, even for me. I realised during Rising Action that I could actually save him – the pieces were already in play, and I just had to lean into those relationships to lead to Baph's choices. At the start, I wasn't sure where Baphomet ended in year 4 – part of me thought he'd survive, as I didn't have that final beat for him at the start. That I didn't have a hard end for Baphomet always made him open to the story finding another purpose for him – which is an end which I can't imagine any other way now. WicDiv is an awful necessary machine.
That applied to Lucifer too. She was a darling, obviously, but she was always going to be trouble. Part of me was aware that she could come back and almost immediately get killed again. I'd like her to make it out, but it was possible she wouldn't.
So, as I said last time, when I realised she was the final opposition I was pleased – that was perfect to the themes and the structure.
I wrote in my synopsis that Laura uses a performance to touch Lucifer and convince her into renouncing her godhood, and left it at that.
There it sat until I came to script it.
Because, in all honesty, I had no idea how Laura was going to convince Lucifer to give up her godhood. I just trusted that there would be some way Laura could reach her. Or, really, I hoped there was – because I knew if I wrote something that didn't feel convincing to me, I wouldn't do the scene. Lucifer would have died instead.
So, the day came when I was scripting this sequence, and I started writing, and wondered what the performance would be, and I just wrote "Laura descends the Ananke head sequence and drags Luci back."
Then I leaned back, a little shocked, because that was clearly right, and so clearly fit with what the series does – a final deconstruction of one of our core visual icons, giving a new way to look at the sequence and think about it. It was just there. As if it was there all along. Or just the sort of thought that emerges when you've been obsessed over this fucking thing for five years.
I'm aware of the weird resonance as well – Laura's finding a performance to save a friend is me finding a performance to save a character. WicDiv was a weird book.
Jamie and Matt go to town, of course – the melting faces are just painful, and wonderfully done. The fleshy reds, the fires. How Clayton uses the captions across the page to play with pacing...
I originally suggested we do it completely as the WicDiv spread, with Laura crawling across the centre spread and making her way up – that it would be treating what is meant to be two columns as a space was decided to be too much, so instead we went with flipping to a subjective perspective on a space that we've only experienced from a single objective outside viewpoint. That's got magic too.
Page 8
A long time to get to this kiss, right?
We moved the dialogue around a little to nail some moments – we had the magic effect on the final panel so the transition to the next page wasn't too much.
The annoyance of Eleanor in the last panel is just my everything. I described it to Jamie by using a metaphor of me in my early thirties, having split up with an Ex, and torn between various places, including seriously wondering whether, after everything, the simple answer to my sexuality stuff was that I was just gay. How annoyed I would have been, after all those years, if it was that. Just a "Oh, FFS. I'm just gay! Why didn't I get that earlier? Why have I wasted all this time? What a fucking fool I am."
That.
Page 9
Repeat of core WicDivian imagery, turned to a different purpose. After these magificent godly reveals, we do this very normal world.
Yeah. This would have been a happy place to end the series.
Page 10
Laura wants to be better, of course. It's easy to say you want to do better.
A+ Cassandra-ing in the background there.
Page 11
Now, Minerva is dead in a few pages time, and she is a genuine monster, trapped in a system of her own making. But I didn't want to send her into the void thinking she had that horror awaiting her. I can't forgive her, but I can give her a little peace.
Title drop, of course, with a wonderful expression by Jamie. There's a lot here.
Okay, let's do this.
"Okay" is a phrase that's haunted WicDiv. We've come back to it multiple times – it's a fascinating word in the English language, and has caused problems for people translating it, in the mixture of ambivalence and optimism in it is really tricky. Clearly, we use everything inside the word.
It wasn't my Dad's last words, but it's the last exchange I remember with him. Everyone else was out, and I was helping him back to his seat. He says to me.
"Son, I know this is strange, but I can't help but think it's going to be okay."
And I can almost imagine my eyes bulging out of my head, as I wanted to howl at him: no, Dad. It really fucking isn't.
This comes up almost verbatim in the first arc, with the exchange between Laura and Lucifer before she breaks out. The series is about many things, but my Father's death was the core inspiration for it, and that "It's going to be okay" haunted me and it.
I don't think this is what my Dad meant, clearly, but it's how I've ended up metabolising it. I've been signing "It's going to be okay" when I sign Faust Acts, partially as it's the WicDiv phrase, partially as a secret-promise-that-they-won't-all-die-and-there-is-hope and partially because "When death comes, it's okay" is that buried in it. If I had to boil the book down to a sentence, it'd be it. It means different things depending how you look at it. That's all I've got.
Page 12
I talk about Solving The Equation of the third year, and Dio being in play for this section is absolutely part of it.
That first panel. I said that the cast were all people I'd have killed to be at various stages of my life. Umar is someone I try to be now. I don't succeed, but he's a worthy goal. Kind is not soft and all that.
While the silent panel is something you've all seen before, it's worth highlighting how good Jamie is. The favourite gesture of the scene is the eyes upwards of Cassandra – I don’t remember Jamie using this angle before, and it's really striking. I suddenly miss that I won't be working with Jamie again for a while. Have fun, Jamie. You were the best.
And now, this.
Page 13-14-15
"It would take a real monster to kill a kid" is one of those lines that have been sitting in the files since the beginning.
There was a fan artist in the WicDiv community early on who kept on doing these totally charming portraits of Baal and Minerva playing around in a big brother and little sister way. Every time I saw them, I felt both love for the art, and a sadness. "In four years time, you are going to have a terrible day."
That's one of the weirdest things of the last four years – that. Knowing that stuff is out there.
Looking at this at a little distance, I see the elements in – the standing on the edge, the "Please Don't" and all that. I sigh. This is awful and upsetting and that page turn is one of the hardest in the series. I wish Valentine would forgive himself, but he couldn't.
This is the sort of thing I want to write a lot about, and want to write nothing. I think I'll keep it as just the facts, in terms of trying to plot this.
Occasionally you get to a knot – I knew Valentine had to kill Minerva, that Valentine couldn't bear to live after that was done and that Minerva had to die after Baal gave up his powers. How to you put those three together, without introducing something else.
C asked "Where does it happen? Could it happen somewhere high?" and the rest was there. Falling being the repeating WicDiv image as well.
I think I pictures this actually side on, without the drop. Jamie's choice is better, just because of the eyes.
The three panels is something we're returned too, but choosing the distance was key. You know it's there, but I didn't want to revel in the dead bodies. This is a different kind of death to many of the ones in the book, and has to be treated as such. Any more blood than shows they're dead would be obscene.
I sigh again. I note that Matt does the lights on the guns perfectly, but I want to highlight craft. The shot of eveyrone waiting is a huge thing – Inanna's grief, Dio stepping in, and the crossed arms of Cassandra...
16
I think it was when I was plotting the second year at WicDiv that I realised that I couldn't see a way out of this which didn't involve the majority of the cast ending up in jail for a while. I was okay with that, as it made some sense. It's thematically resonant for a few ways – it's a choice which shows their acceptance of their acts, and their actual humanity as well as an understanding of their power, and lots more.
However, due to all the straight, white characters being dead, it does mean that a all-queer all-PoC-minus-Lucifer cast going to jail, in the current jail system. That said, while far from perfect, the UK is not the US. I don't think I could have written this ending in the US. Even in the UK, I safety-proof it conceptually as much as I can.
They are all queer, and almost all PoC... but they are also superhumans (and mostly rich.) They have a degree of power, and options which are not open to other people... and it is their one chance to try and navigate this space with no-one else (either them or other humans) getting killed. It's their last chance to act in good faith to the rest of the species.
I wouldn't trust the system if they were people without their resources. They're not. And this is the least-worst choice I can see.
I'm sure some of you will disagree with me on that.
17
More safety-proofing – Voluntuaryism is an anarchist idea. "The only true order is voluntary order" basically.
18-19-20
This is a lot of space for a sequence which is relatively minor dramatic weight, but as we segue towards the end, we want it to breathe a little. Plus there's the matter of the page turns – the previous interstitial was about pushing that as well, so both the "surrender" and Laura's final headshot are on a turn.
Matt's lighting in this sequence is wonderful – I said to Jamie that I was thinking of almost suggesting we're changing genre before Laura steps in. It's a "The special forces go after Batman" sort of sequence. I was thinking of the one from Batman: Year Zero, which is some top class special forces entering darkened environments.
Another moment of the weird-colouring-in-a-balloon, and the actually living in the moment.
Taking the guns is more safety-proofing, showing they are not acting in blind faith of the system. That Laura can take the guns also shows that Laura likely could walk out of prison any time she wants, and the rest will be able to do the same too.
(Not that the people in power know they don't presently have access to their big ones, of course.)
We originally has Cass shouting that final line, but had it much more matter of fact. This is kind of past shouting.
21-22
Yeah, this is calling back all manner of stuff. Back to the courtroom.
Jamie asked me a lot about the final expression, as is only right. This is a story where we've used head shots a lot, normally with pose. This is something else.
23
Worth noting that Laura couldn't be sentenced to life imprisonment. She's 18 so would be sentenced for "custody for life". Not that the story actually says what she's been sentenced to that either – we cut before the sentence is given. Don’t expect a firm answer to that in next issue either.
But they all have been sentenced to life, in the obvious metaphorical way. Laura has been depressed and self-destructive to the point of a death wish throughout. At the end, she's decided to try to live.
I count that as bitter sweet, and I count that as a win. I'm proud of her. I'm proud of them all.
I'm in tears now.
24-28
And we were when compiling the letters page. Thanks you lot.
29
Jamie and I both had really intense feelings about the final cover. It's clear why we've kept it secret (it gives away Laura survives) but to see this young woman we've been writing about older was incredibly moving.
Laura was 20 years younger than me at the start of WicDiv, and she's 20 years older than me at the end. Feeling suspended between the two poles, identically. The duality of it, one more time.
I love this cover so much, and I loved these characters, this book, you lot.
Thanks for reading.

S U M M A R Y :
“They just don’t understand us,” she whispers, her eyes faltering down to her bloodied hands. “We’re different, that’s all.” She looks up at the statue of the terrifying figure of Hades, the god of the Underworld. The moonlight glints off of the marble as the cool air sweeps like a balm over her skin, the hair on her body standing on end.
“They say that you’re a monster,” she smiles, her eyes shining under the stars, “but I don’t believe them.”
In other words, a retelling of the story of Persephone and Hades, in which Persephone can’t wait to get to the Underworld.
last updated: august 4, 2019 more details under the cut:
MAJOR AUTHOR’S NOTE: you really do have to forget everything you think you know about mythology in order to read this without being super critical. the cast, for example, doesn’t exactly line up “age-wise” with how myths go, but it was fun and i picked who i thought fit best with the god/goddess that i chose. if you have any suggestions for the remaining/TBD characters and their roles, please feel free to send me a message!
SUMMARY: Hades, portrayed by Sweet Pea, is sent to rule the Underworld for his own safety after his brothers, Zeus (Reggie) and Poseidon (Jughead), tell him of a terrible prophecy which will ultimately result in his death. After a few hundred years, an unlikely mortal comes slipping through the Gates of Hades. She may turn out to be much more than she appears.

Answers to questions from an ask post. The relative word to each god is italicized. Find the ask post in the reblog
——————————
Aphrodite: The fact that I care about people is the thing I love most about myself.
Apollo: Im decent at many things, but I don’t have enough skill in any area to consider it a talent.
Ares: A small thing that makes me angry is when people think that ghosting is a good way to cut contact with people. If you dont wanna talk to someone any more, just fucking tell them that.
Artemis: I’m hunting for a purpose in life. And determination and motivation because I have none.
Athena: My best subject in elementary school was math; after that it was English/writing/reading.
Demeter: I miss the two people who were my best friends in high school. I still like to think of them as my best friends, only because I don’t want to admit that they stopped being good friends to me years ago.
Dionysus: I extremely rarely drink alcohol. I hate the taste. And the smell. The only thing I’ll have is a strawberry daiquiri, and only if I can’t taste the rum in it. I have had exactly two daiquiris that were not virgin. All other alcohol I taste and gag like a 3-year-old eating liver.
Eros: I define my sexuality as bisexual, but it might actually be homosexual biromantic.
Gaia: My favorite place in the world is honestly my couch. Somewhere I’ve wanted to go though is up north to see Aurora Borealis
Hades: I have never had a near-death experience.
Hecate: I think that magic is hard to have an opinion on. If it exists, I’m cool with it.
Helios: I do sunburn easily, but I do not tan easily. I don’t understand how people can lay there and tan. The sun is hot, guys.
Hephaestus: The coolest thing I’ve ever made is a design on a shirt that I did freehand.
Hera: I am the jealous type.
Hermes: I definitely have stolen things.
Hestia: My home away from home is at a dance studio. Or any open area that I can make into my own dance studio.
Hyperion: I prefer sunsets to sunrises because you have to be up early to see sunrises and that’s not my thing.
Hypnos: My most recent dream was about I have no idea. I rarely have coherent dreams. They make no sense.
Iris: My favorite color palette is maybe bright colors?
Kronos: I don’t think I’ve ever eaten anything stupid.
Nemesis: A time I helped deliver justice is...it’s not justice per se but it may very well have saved a life when I called the police on my friend when she was in eighth grade and was home alone texting me increasingly suicidal ideas
Nike: My most recent accomplishment is just finishing a craft.
Nyx: My favorite nighttime activity is performing some big number to an audience of my empty living room.
Pan: I honestly don’t do a lot for fun. I write. I like acting. I loge dancing but I’m not good at it. My biggest pass time is definitely television.
Persephone: I don’t have a favorite season. Idk...Pilot Season.
Poseidon: My favorite sea creature is um..I like otters and seals and dolphins and manatees and polar bears and penguins.
Rhea: My favorite type of nature is waterfalls.
Selene: What the..who has a favorite phase of the moon? I don’t know- a waxing crescent?
Tartarus: My personal hell is a place without creativity or expression.
Thanatos: I really, really hate those white people who hate every group of people, ya know? They’re against immigrants and foreigners and women and every imaginable religion or race.
Uranus: My zodiac sign is Capricorn, but I share very few traits with it.
Zeus: I like thunderstorms except for the ones where it sounds like someone is dropping a god-sized bowling ball onto your roof.

Secret-Diary Recommends Some Music
I’m not exactly a ‘music person’, in that I don’t know a lot about the mechanics that underpin it: I couldn’t look at sheet music and tell you what the tune is or describe the change in chords in a classical piece. I’m not even 100% sure what the difference between a Ukulele and a Banjo is, aside from the fact that one is played by coquettish islanders while I get shit-faced on Pina Colladas in the background and the other is played by Louisiana bootleggers from the 1920s with comedy accents. All that being said, I know enough to know that the overwhelming preponderance of music produced today is total crap. Every time I’m foolish enough to tune a radio to a musical station, there’s a new barely-pubescent twatwipe peeping about their feelings in a tupperware voice that strongly suggests they don’t actually have any. Either that or its some nominally grown-ass man or woman singing something that they imagine is sassy and empowering but actually just makes them sound like Gary from World’s End- only less charming, because immature, quasi-literate manbabies are infinitely more annoying when they’re real. The point is, it’s a fucking wasteland out there. Trying to find a band (from now or the past) who you’d actually want to listen to can be a chore. That’s why, as your gracious patron and benefactor, I’ve decided to share the fruits of my musical explorations with you and hit you with some recommendations. I’ve tried to be as eclectic as possible, since I want everyone who reads this to find something they’ll like, no matter how radically divergent their individual tastes are. Some of the entries on this list are famous, some are obscure and some were famous but have been made obscure by the passage of time. I’ve tried to limit myself to people whose music you might not be fully aware of, even if you’ve heard of them to some extent, but I’m not plugged into what is and isn’t popular with peeps nowadays, so don’t read too much into my choices if they seem either too obvious or too bizarre. Here goes.
1. The Orion Experience An ultra-camp synthesis of New Romantic music, bubble-gum pop and modern vocal stylings, The Orion Experience are unlike anything else you’ll have heard recently. They seem to borrow as much from the original Decadent tradition in art and literature as from later musical iterations, meaning that their lyrics are complex and sophisticated without being especially deep. They’re primarily concerned with building aesthetically-interesting and richly-evocative language-constructs rather than performing an emotion that no-one in the band is actually feeling. The deliberate artifice is deeply refreshing in a musical landscape of faked sincerity and forced emoting. I recommend starting with the songs The Cult of Dionysus and Sugar. If you like those, the rest of their stuff may also interest you.
2. Trace Adkins During an attempt to write a wild west/sci-fi fusion novel, I went on a musical odyssey, looking for apposite songs that would gel well with the world I was building (knowing a world’s soundtrack can help cement that world in your imagination- try it, if you’re a writer yourself). Anyway, I stumbled across Trace Adkins- a country singer with a palpable sense of humour about being a country singer and a knack for delivering a silly-but-well-turned phrase. Also, without getting technical, his tunes just flat-out rock. I have no idea how well known he in the Country and Western World, but since his existence came as news to me, I’m sticking him on this list. Start with the surprisingly sexy Honky Tonk Badonkadonk and graduate to Hot Momma and Whoop a Man’s Ass. You’ll know if it’s your sort of thing from the first minute of any of those songs.
3. Caravan Palace Have ye heard of a thing called Electric Swing? If you’re reading a blog post about music, you probably have, but just in case you haven’t, let me tell you it’s a fantastic genre. Imagine if The Great Gatsby owned a synth and took a fuckload of mind-squanching hallucinogens. Well, that’s Electric Swing. Few do it better than Caravan Palace, who also seem to borrow heavily from club music and other genres, adding these to their unique blend. For some pure Electric Swing, start with Susie. For something a little more modern, start with Lone Digger.
4. 11 Acorn Lane Speaking of Electric Swing, I can also recommend 11 Acorn Lane, whose lyrics can be a little more playful than those of Caravan Palace. They also have a somewhat more classic sound. Start with Let’s Face it I’m Cute for a great sample of their work.
5. The Fratellis Now, my UK readers have almost certainly heard of The Fratellis, since they actually got some traction on mainstream radio over here. I’m less sure about those of you reading along in America, so allow me to make an introduction. Their music is joyously and unapologetically grimy and proletarian, paring an unrivaled sense of fun and energy with a sly, low-key feeling of cynicism and detachment. The tunes and melodies evoke Rock, punk and New-Wave (think The Ramones by way of The Proclaimers) without wholly relying on any of them. Check out Chelsea Dagger or Henrietta to hear them at their most gleefully up-tempo-yet-jaded, or try Vince the Lovable Stoner for a more chill, tongue-in-cheek song.
5. Dionne Warwick You’ve probably heard of her in connection with There’s Always Something There to Remind Me, especially since it featured heavily in that one fantastic episode of Black Mirror. However, you might not have realised just how much she’s contributed to musical history: her soft-yet-powerful voice and classic Rock rhythms and tunes combine to create something archetypal yet unique. Leap right in with Do You Know the Way to San Jose and discover a fucking legend.
6. Rufus Rex Ever wanted to hear a freakishly talented man singing songs based on horror films and books (particularly the works of H.P. Lovecraft) in a style that evokes Goth music but defies genre on closer inspection? Then get your arse over to Rufus Rex and start plumbing the nightmarish depths of horror-music with the song World’s In Between.
7. Studio Killers Contemporary electronic music with surprisingly inventive and weird lyrics. That about sums up Studio Killers, really. Look, not everything on this list can be genre-transcendent or epoch-defining: some things are just very good examples of the type of music they belong to. If you haven’t heard of them, start with the song Eros and Apollo then check out Ode to the Bouncer, then compare and contrast: those two songs represent the two opposite edges of the musical spectrum they cover, so if you like either one, at least some of their songs will be for you. Also, treat yourself to the music videos on Youtube: they’re surreal and awsesome.
8. Fishbone A punky ska band from back in the day, Fishbone are on this list for one reason and one reason only: Party at Ground Zero. Party at Ground Zero is an upbeat, gloriously energetic song about nuclear war. It’s a total jam and you absolutely have to experience it for yourself.
9. Tomska Tomska... isn’t technically a professional musician. He’s a Youtube comedian, short-film maker and collaborative animator who became internet-famous for his ‘ASDF movies’. On the off-chance that you haven’t seen them, they’re short collections of animated skits and jokes rendered in a simple but immediately-compelling and recognisable style. Anyway, Tomska decided to create fast-paced, catchy songs about some of the recurring characters in his ASDF movies, and those songs turned out to be fucking amazing- being both laugh-out-loud funny and actually really musically ambitious and well put together. Check them out on his channel. I’m particularly fond of Mine Turtles, but you do you.
10. Paul Anka Big band and jazz musician Paul Anka once set out on a quest to create 1920s-sounding versions of famous rock ‘n’ roll songs and the results can only be described as ‘eargasmically epic’. His versions of Jump and Eye of the Tiger are, frankly, better than the originals.
Right, that’s everything I can thing of for now. I’m going to go make myself a big sandwich. By the time your read this, I’ll be settling down with two-slices of bread, some cheese and an unreasonably large amount of cranberry sauce. All the songs and bands in today’s entry are on Youtube, so go have a nosy. Until next time, peace out and fuck off!

11/11/11 tag!
I was tagged by the swell @jackeritesstuff yaaaay!!!!!
1. What part of worldbuilding do you like the least?
Names. Like, names of places. How the society works isn't bad, but there's a reason why one of my wips has two unnamed kingdoms. I don't want them to sound stupid
2. Do you write in your own language? If not, why?
Yup. I write in english, which is my first language, but I do have a wip just started in Spanish as well (my second language)
3. How many of your characters are orphans or have absent parents?
*whistles* a lot. With icarus, his mom is absent for most of his life, ishmael, same deal but with his dad, ummm Gram was flat out abandoned, Nicole's parents died, Dionysus' mom exploded, and William's parents got sucked into a magic portal. Luckily these people aren't all in the same world (or if they are they don't all meet each other) otherwise things would be cray.
Completely awesome, but cray.
4. Do you have any happily married couples in your story?
Dionysus and Ariadne, once they actually get married. They are adorbs.
...
Yeah, they're probably it.
5. What kind of visual arts (cinema, sculpture, painting…) inspires you and your stories?
Painting and scultpture, I think. Mostly with painting I think of colors, rather than any particular painting, and sculpture I mean, have you seen any marble statue of a person?? Like, the realism!
6. Did you ever go somewhere and think “this is exactly my story’s setting”?
Nope. Cause I don't live anywhere near anyplace cool.
7. If you take public transports, do you ever look at the people around you and imagine their story?
Rarely. Mostly cause I don't want to be caught staring.
8. What is the last book you read (or are currently reading)? Would you recommend it?
I can't remember the last book I read (which is sad. My bookshelves are taunting me, I've just been busy) but I do plan on reading the Journey to the West. There are some pretty great videos on YouTube provided by Overly Sarcastic Productions that discuss parts of the books (there's like 4) Monks and dragons and gods and magic monkeys galore. Would recommend watching the videos before trying the books because they are a bit expensive (though I do expect them to be great, I am a nerd)
9. When was the last time you read fanfiction and what was it about?
Weeks ago I think (Like I said, I've been busy!) I think it was about Ducky from NCIS secretly being the Russian spy Illya Kuryakin from Man from U.N.C.LE
10. What is the first thing that came to you for your WIP? Was it a scene, a character, or something else?
I think a mix of scene and character. I had a pretty clear idea that I wanted to work with Icarus, and I imagined his fall, though the early versions were quite a but different than they are now.
11. Is there a genre or writing format you’d like to try in the future?
Hmmmm....I think first person. My wip with William (the dude whos parents got sucked into a magic portal) is first person, but I've barely started it, so I haven't played with that perspective all that much. Usually I stuck to third.
Tagging! (no pressure tho) @imaghostwriter @softdramahoe @ragethewriter
and anyone else that feels like it (it's 12:30, my brain stopped working)
