K DOESN'T REMEMBER how this 'argument' started. He'd gotten a little too close to Rainer and she'd pushed him away, only for him to return with a push of his own - and then they were sparring in this shitty motel room, swiping and clawing and gnashing teeth at each other although there's no real danger behind any of it.

HE'S GOTTEN A grip on her wrists, but there's no real victory in this as she uses his grasp to yank him in close enough to pepper his cheeks with kisses. For the first time in decades, she's got him chirping - a brisk, high, throaty sound that resembles a laugh if you added a syrinx to a person.

TEETH SCRAPE AGAINST her skin whenever he's able to turn his head enough to make contact, but there's no bite - if anything, just a nibble of returned affection.

Salem inclines her head in silent concession to not telling Tyrian of her exact cause for being… vexed; enough, she reasons, to explain that it was not his tail, and nor has she spent all this time counting it against him; that she regrets–

But his next suggestion rakes unpleasantly across those thoughts, tearing open a gash of suppurating anxiety; so potent as to leave a rotten taste welling under her tongue. “I–”

Her voice fails her, rupturing halfway up her throat into flayed silence. Salem tucks her chin. Exhales sharply; and then what little breath still remains in her lungs rushes out in a tight mutter. “—can’t—”

–your selfishness and arrogance have led you astray–

Nothing she confessed this time has yet ended in disaster, but a mere few hours without dire consequence is nothing; and she is rising shakily from the newly crimson floors of the palace in Kinovar, swallowing the blood in her mouth, to tell the pale and stricken court of the injustices enacted against her; and she is fallen to her knees, screaming and screaming and screaming under the red-hot crucible of the sky; and—

–and it—it—the things that bother her are so small, so—trifling. None of it can hurt her. Nothing can hurt her in a way that matters.

To defend oneself, whether from assault or some more insidious harm—that is not selfish, if the danger is true.

She is so old. She feels so ancient. Salem has seen a thousand, thousand times how fear without merit becomes a sword; for it was discomfort that justified the slaughter of faunuskind by humans afraid of people who were not like them—

No one is like her in all the world.

She is so weary, and so afraid.

“…I–” Hunching a little, Salem scrapes out: “I do not… know how to– to draw the line—when it is justifiable to make such demands and when it is not. I am so—selfish, and so often wrong. It’s easier—better, to just… I endured—so much—that for me to complain of… meaningless, small—it is so petty.”

Salem was married to Ozpin for thirteen years, and they had four daughters together. The reveal of some of that, the re-visiting of the rest of it as it had been told to him in her throne room - oh, for fuck's sake, this really is a lover’s spat. Gods help me.

(And what a falling out it must have been, if they were still feuding after all this time. What lies the man must have told her. Unless of course- wait. Their daughters were dead, were they not? And hadn't Tyrian said, repeatedly, that Ozpin 'owed' Salem something?

Ah. That explains it. Ozpin is the reason her kids are...)

He'd offer his condolences, if she wasn't so readily continuing on into a distinction between discernment and deceit.

And she is not wrong, to talk about how much time it will take to help Tyrian. How much it might mean to the man, to once again have people who cared. Watts had always hoped there was a way to - if not cure Tyrian's madness, then to alleviate its worst pressures. Because really, it wasn't Tyrian's homicidal tendencies that bothered Watts so much as his self-destructive ones.

He just wanted Tyrian to be happy, truly happy, to stop living in fear - for so long, Tyrian had, in some way, been controlled by fear. Even his instinct to sting had started as a fear response (whatever it was now). And this plan of Salem's, it- might work. But-

"It is a discussion of his care, yes. But I do not want him to think," he says, quietly, "that it was all based on lies. That you are pretending to be pleased with him, that you are pretending to find him favorable, that you are tolerating the use of your name and his freely-spoken stories, that I knew all along and am keen on making a fool out of him. As I said before, he is- weirdly delicate. Sensitive. And I know you abhor lying. I just- will he be able to- remember that?"

I see no reason Tyrian shouldn't be told, Salem had said. Tyrian was very kind to me. It pleased me to see the faces he has held back. Tell him he had raised himself so highly in my estimation by what he said to me before that it shocked me to hear him denigrating himself again. Tell him that he is forgiven entirely and the offense forgotten, and he is permitted to speak freely before me. And tell him that he is allowed the use of my name.

"I will tell him what you - suggested - I say. But I will also tell him that we spoke at length about his health and about our shared care and concern for his well-being. That we feel...He is not in Mistral, anymore. He has no need to hide himself, not even from you. I think- I think it will give him the choice to act, rather than potentially instilling an idea in his mind that he must be a certain way to please you. And this way...even if he may not have been told what we hope will happen, then even if he does find out how deep this conversation went, he will still be able to trust that you holding him in high esteem is genuine. Just- his tail- don't tell him what you were really mad about. I think it would just shift the course of his anguish. If he thinks the entire situation has been forgiven, he might move past it. Aside from, of course, the natural difficulty that comes with an amputation."

A pause.

"He will still remember the- marks- on his collar, and your previous displeasure in his groveling. I don't- want this to be deceptive, either, but I would advise you to be- forthcoming- if something does bother you. If it's truthful to you to do as such: spin it as a sign that he is such in your favor that you know you can trust him with your total honesty. He'll love it."
