“I heard you went to her sister’s wedding?” Perry questions, leaning over his desk.
“I’ve talked to you about bugging me during class hours.”
“They’re working on Field Day investigations right now, dude, no one’s here.”
“Still on the clock. And, did she tell you?”
“Oh,” she laughs out, “she did. She told me just how much fun she had, and just how handsome you looked.”
“Get to the point.”
“Fine,” Perry bites out, “all this stuff that she told me you did for her—it doesn’t sound like you. At all. So spit it out. You like Phoebe, don’t you?”
“Yes.”
“And don’t even bother lying to me, I know—wait, just like that?!”
His eyelids narrow at her, and he deadpans, “What, did you expect me to be difficult?”
“When are you not? And, since when?!”
“I’m not exactly sure.”
All of his blunt and suspiciously honest sounding answers are beginning to scare her, so she scoffs, “And you said you didn’t want to see her the first day you two met.”
“I do recall that, yes. But I also recall that we never quite discussed the fact that you went behind my back and tricked me into—”
“Oops, gotta go now, got meetings with the kids, you know!!” Perry straightens up, immediately heading for the door. “Good luck with your love life, you’ll do great, I’m rootin’ for ya, bye!!”

Not long after they’ve begun dating, he’s standing out in the rain with her. She twirls happily, seemingly unbothered by the fact that she does not have an umbrella.
A fact that he himself is very much bothered by.
She calls out to him, “Doesn’t this feel great?”
“You’ll catch a cold, Phoebe Fray.”
“Spoilsport! Can’t you enjoy something romantic just once?”
It’s then that Darius remembers something. “You’re half French, correct? Say something romantic, then.”
She stops her twirling and bounding, glancing at him behind her shoulder.
“Il pleut comme vache qui pisse,” she says through the world’s most shit-eating grin.

Death has never scared him. He knows, just as well as anyone else, that where there is life, there is death. All things die eventually. No one’s special.
But how do the ones left alive continue? Who is he now?
She was the best part of him. Her and him, him and her, two matching pieces, facing the world together. She was his other half, his one and only, so how…
How does he go back to being just one half?
Where does he put his heart, which has been returned to him against his will?
It’s so heavy.
After a long time, he slowly rises from his seat. So that’s what happens when you give a part of yourself away. It gets given back.
He’s not afraid of death. He is, in fact, a very practical man.
He’s just afraid of living.

The next few years pass by in what seems to Darius is a never ending daze. He can’t bring himself to care about much, and his teaching style becomes much harsher. His shell reforms, only this time, with a renewed vigor, one that could only be the result of the worst heartbreak.
He doesn’t talk much. Perry tries to do what she can to keep him socialized and provide company, but even she gets tired of fighting off his refusals, and even she still feels the sharp aches of loss.
So one annoyingly sunny day, in the sixth year of this daze, Perry strides into Darius’s classroom on the first day of school, approaching him and his newest trouble student: a girl named Haley Chiaki.
“Ah, you two have met?” She forces a smile, internally cursing herself for not informing Darius of this situation sooner. She had hoped the girl wouldn’t attract attention to herself, but alas, that was in vain. “That makes my job easier.”
A lie, of course. That makes this ten times harder.
“Mr. Culbert, this is Haley Chiaki, as I’m sure you already know, and she is a… very special girl. You see, the School accepted her this summer, but there is a problem.”
“And what is that, Miss Perry?”
“Ah… here, read her file,” she answers, handing a thin file off to him, in an attempt to save herself from his wrath.
The room is silent for a few beats, before he reads aloud:
“'Inability to utilize magic of any kind'?”
Perry winces. “Yeah. She was a last minute acceptance, so we weren’t able to inform you of this before the year started, but we hoped… with your reputation and expertise, that you would be able to deal with this… problem.”
“Hey, I’m right here,” the girl, Haley, deadpans.
“Aware,” Darius shoots back tiredly. Turning to Perry, he hisses, “And you couldn’t have told me of this any sooner?”
The woman only offers a shy grin in apology. “Sorry… to be honest, I didn’t expect she’d be able to get in at all.”
“Still right here,” Haley says.
They only both give her a mildly curious look, as if she is a fly in their room, before turning back to one another. “Miss Perry… fine, I’ll see what I can do. But currently, I have an outstanding commission from the School, so if you’ll excuse me—”
“Oh, that’s perfect!”
He stops cold. “What?”
Perry smiles brightly, grabbing Haley by her shoulders and tugging her softly. “You can take her! She’s never seen a Source before, and you’ll be her teacher, anyway, so what better way than by example?”
“Do you mean to get her off of your hands as fast as you can, or do you genuinely think this is for the best? She won’t be able to do anything if—”
“It’s just a Source, so the vine monsters shouldn’t be any problem for you, great Flameknight,” Perry sings sarcastically. “And, yes, I do have a lunch to get to, so I won’t be able to give her a tour. Give her one for me, would you?”
Before Darius or Haley can protest (and they both look like they very much want to), Perry is out the door and gone.
Sighing heavily, Darius turns his critical gaze back on Haley. Now that it is reflecting a much stronger emotion than mild curiosity, and now that he looks pissed, Haley finds herself shrinking.
Grasping for anything to say to break the silence, she squeaks out, “So… what’s this about a Source?”

May Never Make it Out Challenge

here's a very self indulgent science fiction au that i've been working on on & off for over year. i actually have more than 12k written it's just too weird to actually share LOL but...here's like 3k of it ♥️

SIMON: SESSION 3
"I have a surprise for you."
"Oh?" Wilhelm asks, trying to keep his voice calm. Erik's words from last night are still fresh in his mind as he makes his way from the entrance to the middle of the room where the two chairs stand as usual.
Simon's seated on the floor this time, cross-legged. Wilhelm hesitates before taking his usual seat on the chair instead of joining Simon on the floor. The boundaries between them are still a little blurred. It’s difficult to understand what would startle Simon and what would make Wilhelm himself uncomfortable.
"It's not a song," Simon clarifies, a bit unnecessarily as there’s no piano in this room, "It's - a surprise. You have to close your eyes." Wilhelm watches as Simon gets to his feet, eyes subconsciously tracing a path from his slim shoulders to his slender waist. By the time he manages to rip his gaze away, a faint shade of pink is dusting across Simon's cheeks. Strange for someone without blood. "Wille is that okay?"
“What?”
Simon smiles like he’s heard a very funny joke. “Can you close your eyes?”
"Oh - yeah, sure," Wille nods. He curls his fingers into his sweats and shuts his eyes.
"I'm going to leave the room for a minute."
Wilhelm opens his eyes, a sound of protest rising in his throat, "You - has Erik said -"
"I'm just going back to the bedroom," Simon explains patiently. If Wilhelm's sudden reaction has piqued his curiosity, he doesn't let it show. "The passages are connected. I won't be anywhere I don't belong."
Simon's already halfway to the door before Wilhelm can get himself to respond to the wry words thrown his way. "It's not that you don't belong," he finds himself arguing. Simon freezes at the doorway, but he doesn't turn around to face him. "That’s not what I meant."
The response comes after a long moment of silence. "I'm not like you, Wille," Simon says softly, "Now please close your eyes. I want this to be a surprise."
Wille shuts his eyes. Mostly because he doesn’t know what to say.
The room is silent without Simon, the only sound is his own shallow breathing and the faint ticks from the CCTV cameras moving about the room. Simon is watched twenty-four hours a day, seven days a week. Wille’s not quite sure how he hasn't asked about them yet, how he manages to live - exist, whatever - like that. He knows that if he were in Simon’s place, he would’ve gone insane by now..
Simon is gone for less than a few minutes, but it feels like much, much longer. The room is uneasy without him, like something is not quite right.
When Wilhelm hears the door slide open again, he squeezes his eyes shut harder, bursts of multicolored dots appearing behind his eyelids. "Simon?"
There's a warm hand on the back of his neck. Wilhelm jumps, his eyes flying open involuntarily. He swallows at the sight before him. His tongue feels like it’s stuck to the roof of his mouth.
"Is it a stupid surprise?" Simon asks quietly, a hint of uncertainty coloring his voice.
Wille thinks he’s forgotten how to use his vocal chords. He shakes his head, keeping his eyes trained on Simon's as he reaches out to gently take one of his translucent hands in his own.
A smile flickers across Simon's features then, eyes squinting in happiness, tongue pressed to the backs of his white teeth. He relaxes, shoulder’s loosening. "How do I look?" he asks, "Do you like it?"
Wilhelm leans back in his chair, scanning him from head to toe. Black boots with little zippers up the sides, dark jeans covering the length of his legs. His arms are covered by a soft looking navy sweater; the peek of a white tee shirt visible through the V-neck. "Yeah,” he nods roughly, “You look - nice." Every nerve in his body must be burning, Wille thinks hysterically, what with the fucking heat Simon's body seems to give off.
"I spent a long time picking it out," Simon admits, squeezing his fingers, "I wanted to - I wanted you to like it. Like me. Sometimes it looks like you do, but you're embarrassed by it. So I thought, if I was more like you, then - you might."
Wille pulls his hands away, noting the way Simon flexes his wired fingers as though he misses the feel of it. "What're you doing?"
"I -" Simon looks at him, wide-eyed. Innocent. "I want us to go on a date."
Wilhelm stands from his chair, steps a few feet to his right in order to take in Simon's delicate frame. He hesitates, then decides that the question probably isn't as loaded as he's making it out to be. "Okay," he says, as casually as he can muster. His pulse is jackhammering. "That sounds like fun. Where would we go?"
Simon's expression ripples, something catching his features far too quickly for Wilhelm to read. "A movie," he says, "An ideal place to observe culture, ideals of beauty, self, and fantasy. Then maybe a walk through a busy street. We'd get a concentrated but shifting view of human life."
Wilhelm stays silent.
"Do you think about me when we're not together?" Simon asks now. He takes a step forward. When Wille doesn't move back, he seems to take it as a sign to close the space between them entirely. He fists a robotic hand in Wilhelm's long-sleeve. His voice is smooth, sexual in a way Wilhelm has never heard. "Because I think about you, Wille. I like to think about you watching me on the cameras."
Wilhelm thinks this is what it means when people say their life is flashing before their eyes. His breathing is obviously unsteady and he wishes he'd worn jeans, or at least thicker pants. He's embarrassingly hard on camera and Simon's done nothing but talk to him. "Simon," he begs, "I’m not sure what you - "
"You give me indications that you're attracted to me," Simon whispers, fingers smoothing across his chest. He tugs at the waistband of Wille’s sweats, "Your micro-expressions are - "
"I'm not sure how micro they are," Wilhelm grits, teeth clenched. He tries to imagine Erik in the observation room, tries to conjure up the image of him watching his exchange with muffled laughter. Unfortunately, it’s not enough to calm the rush of blinding lust that pools in his stomach at the way Simon’s blinking up at him, eyes deep and dark and wide. He takes a shuddering breath and pulls Simon’s hand away from his pants.
Immediately, Simon's face falls. He takes a step back, "I'm sorry," he says, "You’re aroused, but also uncomfortable."
Now, Wilhelm's face feels like it’s on fire. His gaze darts up to the cameras, their steady, blinking almost incriminating. "It’s fine, Simon. Our time is - I'll see you tomorrow, okay?."
The acute disappointment on Simon's face makes him want to take back the words at once. He swallows, turning towards the door. But, Simon stops him once again, his fingers brushing the edges of Wille’s shoulder blades.
"Will you ever take me on a date?" Simon whispers. It sounds like the words are being torn from his body.
Wilhelm closes his eyes, trying to keep his breath steady. "I don't know," he admits, more honest than he’d have preferred to have been in this room. "Have you ever been outside this facility, Simon?"
"No," Simon murmurs. His hand smooths across Wilhelm’s back. "I've never been outside these two rooms."
Wilhelm nods. He turns slightly to remove Simon's arm from his back, the grip of his hand wide around Simon's clothed elbow. The touch is different somehow, more charged than anything they've shared before.
"Will you take me?" Simon asks again, "Wille?"
And Wilhelm needs to leave. Right fucking now.

Wilhelm’s breathing hard by the time he’s out of the room, the ghost of Simon’s fingers still dancing on his neck, his face an ever-present image in his mind. He leans against the table in the observation room, ignoring the way Erik’s watching him closely..
“What the fuck,” he manages at last, his voice sounding hoarse to his own ears, “What in ever-loving fuck was that?”
Erik simply calmly adds another spoonful of sugar to his tea. He's leaning back lazily in his chair, screens still blown up with the view of the now empty room. Wilhelm decidedly doesn't look to see where Simon is now. “What was what, little brother?”
“What was he doing?” Wilhelm’s all but yelling now, “Why is he - he’s coming on to me. Why would you make him do that?”
Erik takes a sip of the steaming liquid, an amused expression spreading across his face, “You’re the only other person he’s ever met besides me and I’m basically his father. Doesn’t seem too far-fetched that he’s got a bit of a crush.”
“Fuck,” Wilhelm runs a hand through his hair, trying to get his racing heartbeat under control. “Why would you do that?” He asks finally, “Give him - a sexuality?”
Erik sets down his cup and leans forward on his elbows, “Why not? Sexuality is a fundamental aspect of human life. According to most psychologists, sex is considered a primary reinforcer.” He snorts, “Gives him something to look forward to with you around now.”
Wilhelm takes a seat gingerly on the edge of the table, knee bouncing almost involuntarily. “Why me though? Why make him attracted to his tester?” He tries to keep his question as neutral as possible, but it’s obvious from the way Erik’s face twists with perverse pleasure that he’s given too much away.
“You're asking me if you can fuck Simon, right?” Erik laughs, open-mouthed and shameless.
Wilhelm cringes, cheeks blazing, “No - fuck you, Erik. That’s not what I -”
“You can,” Erik throws him a smirk, “His body is wired with neurotransmitters. He has a complex network of signal paths that mimic nerves. Strip him of those clothes he's just put on for you and he's anatomically accurate, a concentration of sensors down there. If you engage him in the right way, it'll create a pleasure response, and he'll give as good as he takes. He'll even finish, even if the actual mechanics of him coming - ”
Something in Wilhelm runs cold at the words. He steels his back, tries to make himself look as tall as possible even if Erik could stand and dwarf him with mass alone. “That’s not what I fucking asked,” he says darkly.
“Maybe not," Erik mulls as he gets to his feet, "But it’s what you want to know.”
"No it isn't," Wilhelm argues hotly as he follows Erik out of the room. Instead of taking the staircase to the right back up the kitchen and living room, they make a left turn at the end of the corridor. There's a completely new hall here, one that Wilhelm's never seen before. Not for the first time, he wonders how big the facility really is, why one lonely man would need so much space.
They walk in silence for a minute, passing a range of anatomically accurate paintings, mostly of naked young men and women. Wilhelm doesn't ask about them, keeping his eyes trained on Erik’s back. "I want to know," he says instead, repeating his thought from earlier, "why you made him attracted to me - his tester. Why program him like that? Is this to cloud my judgment? A defense tactic or something?"
Erik snorts unkindly. They stand in front of a smooth metallic door, much like the other ones he's seen around in the hallways. Erik clicks the button on his remote door slides open with a smooth hiss. "You don't have access to this room. Just saying."
"Erik," Wilhelm grits, "Why is Simon flirting with me?"
"For fuck's sake, Wille," Erik's voice is tense, coiled, clearly irritated and condescending all at once. "I programmed him to be gay, just like you were programmed to be fluid or whatever the fuck you’re calling yourself this month."
Wilhelm frowns as he steps through the doorway, "Nobody programmed me to be anything."
They're in some sort of lab, smooth glass cases covering bits of blue gel, boxes - clear and cardboard - line an entire wall, most of them filled to the brim with papers to the point where the lids strain outwards. Along his left are sections of android bodies - limbs, torsos, hands - lined in glass cabinets. Towards the back of the room are more parts, specifically a collection of heads. Skull-forms, some with complex carbon-fiber and pneumatic muscle structures, ready to frown or smile. All are noticeably missing the synthetic meshed-flesh covering that Simon has. A row of synthetic faces hang separately up on armatures, much like hats on hat-stands, waiting to be worn.
In the middle of the room is what appears to be an operating table.
Erik moves towards it, picking up a skull as he goes. "Don't be ridiculous," he rolls eyes, clearly amused, "You decided to be queer? No, of course you didn't - you were programmed by a complex combination of nature and nurture. Just like Simon has been programmed." He motions for Wilhelm to follow him as he sets the skull down on the smooth metal of the table. "And frankly, this sounds like your insecurity talking. You're attracted to him; he's attracted to you. His flirting isn't an algorithm, because for the record, I didn't program him to like you."
Wilhelm allows the words to sink into his skin for only a moment before he stomps down on the giddy warmth that irrupts in his stomach. For fuck's sake, he's a scientist; he needs to stop thinking like a teenager with a crush. "Is this where you built him?"
Erik watches him for a long moment, clearly interested by the change of subject, or more accurately, Wilhelm's need to change the subject. "His version of the womb if you will. Want to know the biggest challenge when it came to making him?" Wilhelm moves to nod before he realizes that it's a rhetorical question, "Facial expressions. Humans read and express them on a basic level, we're born with it hardwired into us - they span every culture, every language. It ended up being the main downfall of some of the earlier prototypes - "
"Earlier prototypes?" Wille can't help but jut in. Realistically he knows that Erik's been working on this little hobby of his for over a decade, there had to have been other models, simpler ones, ones that didn't work as well. It's still a strange idea though, that there were others before Simon. That there might be others after him.
Erik raises a dark eyebrow at him. "You thought he was alone - the only one?"
"No," Wilhelm admits, "I just - I knew he wasn't the first. But I did think he'd be the last." His voice is tighter than he'd anticipated, a fierce curl of protectiveness that’s obvious even to himself.
"You feel bad for him, little brother?" Erik leans against the table, looks him dead in the eye.
Wilhelm shakes his head, tries not to let his voice betray him.
Then, Erik sighs. "Simon doesn't exist in isolation - not any more than you and I do, at least. He's part of an evolutionary continuum, version 12.8 to be exact. Every version gets a little bit better, a little bit closer to that all-consuming fear. The androids that'll make the human race obsolete."
Wilhelm cracks a weak smile despite himself. He rolls the thought around in his mind like a marble. "So - do you think he's it? You know - singularity?"
There are a few beats of silence, nothing touching the moment except for the sound of their breathing, even though Wilhelm feels like his heart is going to beat out of his chest. He wants to know the answer almost as badly as he doesn't.
"I don't know," Erik says at last. He shoots Wilhelm a strange look, "Shouldn't you be telling me?"
"Fair enough," Wilhelm reasons, cocking his head. "Anyway, what about facial expressions?"
"Christ," Erik shakes his head, runs a hand through his salt and pepper hair, huffing a laugh. "He really does make you emotional doesn't he." Wilhelm flushes despite himself, "I hacked everything," Erik says abruptly.
Wilhelm blinks, "You - "
"I took all the data pouring in from cameras, cell-phones, every single one, across the globe - and redirected it through social media. Gives you a limitless supply of human facial and vocal interaction. Simon's mind is made out of structured gel - do you know what that does, Wille?"
Wilhelm shakes his head, "I don't know what any of this does to be honest."
"Don't exactly blame you," Erik shrugs casually. He sets the skull on the table, before he pinches it with two fingers. Wilhelm watches in fascination as the gel keeps its form even after Erik lets go, hardening into its new shape. "This is state of the art stuff, hasn't been released to the public yet. Structured gel is a new building material my company found a few years ago. Earlier AI models always used circuitry, but we had to get away from that. Our minds don't necessarily work in sequences; it'd be inaccurate, simplistic. AI minds need to be able to restructure and rearrange at a molecular level, but still hold their structure when required. For example, Simon’s mind holds still for memories, but shifts for thinking."
Wilhelm reaches down to poke at the skull. It feels like Jell-O, but tougher somehow, more durable. "What about the software?"
Erik smirks, "You're a thinking man, Wilhelm. Why don't you give me your best guess?"
"Social media," Wilhelm guesses. Then, he huffs a breath of laughter. “I guess, since you need to filter his data, social media is perfect - it gives you the ability to work with dense graphs based on familiarity rather than raw data from search engines. Most companies use social media to map out profits, what items are popular, who's trending.” At Erik’s encouraging nod, he continues. “It's a map of people's thoughts. But not just not a map - it's - it's more like a - blueprint. Because it's not what they're thinking, but how they're thinking, isn't it? It makes it so that Simon can be fluid and patterned, but also impulsive and chaotic."
Erik gives him an appraising look, clearly impressed. "Well done, Wilhelm. I hope this'll help you in future sessions."
Wilhelm stills, hand faltering where he reached for the gel skull again. "What do you mean?"
"I'm showing you this so you'll remember," Erik's gaze is cool, collected, casual, but it makes Wilhelm feel like he's been dunked in ice water. "Simon is not a boy. By definition, he has no gender, no sexuality, no identity. He's synthetic gel and hydraulics."
Wille averts his gaze from Erik to the skull on the operating table.
“A machine.”

After deciding 'it is done'
This is more of a manifestation themed post (it's a draft from March when I spontaneously felt like writing it but didn't post it) because I felt like it but I'd appreciate if I didn't get any asks about manifestation* (unless I change my mind later) cos I'll share what I can and there's a lot of material available already! You can see my past post on this topic here. For more posts on it, see @4dbarbie-archive and realisophie's posts here and here and there's also some over at @ndjournal in the experience sharing tag.
*Also because I don't want to send mixed messages to the readers of this blog. I see conscious manifestation as a way to challenge & break limitations and concepts from the mind, not to get things in the world (kinda like Neo learning to bend the spoon in the Matrix if you get me lol). The latter will only pull you deeper into ego and the world, which isn't conducive to self-realization (if that's your goal) if you're focused on satisfying ego and the worldly life. If that makes sense and you resonate and agree with that, then we are on the same page but not everyone is and that's okay too, just do what feels right to you. Just sharing my reasoning :)

I've been reading this book called Parallel Universes of Self because I read the author Frederick Dodson had an interesting reality shifting experience. I didn't expect to read info on manifestation but they are pretty much the same. I have a few books of his that I'm skimming through out of curiosity and there's some interesting stuff (I might share some other things later, he doesn't just talk about manifestation, but also consciousness, reality and even non-duality).
I thought I'd share the below excerpt because it's explained really well and might help some others. It's also a nice succinct summary of what Ada and Soph talked about for materialization/manifestation as well. I can remember pretty much 95% of the things I've ever "manifested" were from when I acted the way he described after I had decided "it is done". It's easier to do this for things you don't care about because you just end up forgetting about it entirely and then it shows up and you're like 'oh yeah!! nice'.
In the hours, days and weeks after simply rest in the new viewpoint, rest in the fulfilled reality. This means that you don’t try to “make it happen” because you have already claimed it as real. You don’t affirm, visualize, repeat or wait for it. You don’t hope for it to come in some future. Because you have claimed it as already real you don’t even think about it much either. You don’t ask when, how, where it will show up. Instead you simply do what offers itself to you throughout the day, and this will involve commonplace activities. Daily life continues in a natural manner without neediness or lack. Once in awhile you may want to re-feel the body sense of the chosen reality, and enjoy what you have claimed as true, but often not even that is necessary. Furthermore you needn’t be “acting as if” the desired reality is manifest, for that still implies separation. Simply cease to behave in a way that presupposes that it is not already so. You may refuse to ascribe relevance or importance to any events that seem to contradict your newly chosen reality. From the new viewpoint such events may still exist and come up but they are no longer relevant enough to be reacted to and interacted with. They may be the way things are at the moment, but they are no longer the way you are. The corresponding physical manifestation will appear when you stop needing it, chasing after it, looking for it but are instead willingly and lovingly identified with it…not for the sake of “making it manifest” *, but for the sake of experiencing its joy in the here, now and today. *Because trying to make it happen/manifest reinforces the idea/belief that it isn't
This is the same as what 4dbarbie said about getting ego out of the way or as Lester Levenson said, let go and let God. Just let it happen and stop trying to control the process because the more you try, the more you reinforce the fact that it isn't already so. Basically stop putting in effort once you know it is true, just continue knowing with calm and ease that it is the way you want it. Ada also said here:
If you have thoughts like "I need to say my affirmations", "I need to check my state", you're not living in the end but still desiring. When you're able to look at the thing you desire as being something that was once a dream, but now only a memory - you've entered the state of the wish fulfilled. When desire turns into identity, you know you've succeeded in fulfilling yourself.
Yes we're conditioned to think we need to work hard and put effort to earn things in the world but when it comes to manifesting, this sort of mentality will only sabotage and hinder your success. You can literally just decide you have it and then never look back. This sort of mindset can take a bit of time and practice to get used to because it is not something we're used to but the more you practice, the easier it gets.
Here is an excerpt from an astral projection book (I think it's from The Illusion of Method?) I thought was really apt at describing this too. He's talking about AP but you can apply it to manifesting or pretty much anything as well.
Unless you are masochistic, I ask you to reconsider the painful idea of obsessing about time. Bear in mind that results will come whenever they have to, and counting the minutes won't make the outcome arrive faster. It's best if you just forget about it, and accept that it is something that you can't control. You must be patient—most of the time the desired results arrive immediately after giving up control of time. If you are frustrated and/or are afraid of failure, then it means you believe you are in control—and this translates into the feeling that you are responsible for both positive and negative results. Well then, stop thinking that way! Exempting yourself from responsibility is the best course of action there is. As seen in the previous chapter, those who project on command are the ones who couldn’t care less about AP. But the more you obfuscate yourself, the lesser your chances of success —and trust me, you won’t want to get trapped in that vicious cycle. Astral projection works when you stop worrying about failure because you trust that it will happen, whether you “do” something or not.
It’s the same thing: just in the same way that being hasty for sleep to occur keeps us wakeful and alert, being expectant over the OBE will keep us caged in the physical body. If the mind is constantly thinking about the goal, it can easily enter a state of expectancy* and impatience. In such state, the mind is no longer relaxed because expectancy is a state of unrest. This form of tension is what hinders the outcome—thus, the key to being relaxed (i.e., essentially lacking mental tension) is to forget about the goal entirely. If you don’t have the goal in mind you don’t enter a state of expectancy, and therefore you are free from mental tension. *expectancy is the same energy as trying to make something happen.. reinforcing the idea/belief that it isn't so
So, exempt yourself from responsibility means there's nothing more to do because ego is not in control and can do nothing.

...And here we come upon a problem as basic as the nature of knowledge itself: all of our prodigious cognitive and computational abilities are inadequate to a full comprehension of our complex world. As humans, we remain heavily dependent on certain tools of perception and conception that our cultural and biological heritages have taught us are useful. These tools–such as language, causal logic, religion, mathematics–are indeed powerful, but they are powerful precisely because they reduce complexity to intelligibility by projecting our mental concepts onto the world. One consequence of this is that our recognition of significance is always what some philosophers call "theory laden," meaning that it is shaped by what our theoretical framework and cognitive tools encourage us to recognize as meaningful. Anti-Judaism, as I have argued throughout this book, is precisely this: a powerful theoretical framework for making sense of the world.

After all, no matter how overrepresented the Jews may have been among the European "bourgeoisie," they remained a tiny minority of that class. How could that tiny minority convincingly come to represent for so many the evolving evils of the capitalist world order? More broadly, how could untold millions of Europeans (and not only Germans) come to believe–or act as if they believed–the claims of the Nazis (and not only the Nazis) that Jews and their conspiracies so threatened the security of the world that they needed to be excluded, expelled, or exterminated? According to Horkheimer and Adorno, the liquidation of the Jews of Europe was not grounded in "reality." It took place in the vast gap between and explanatory framework ("anti-Semitism") that made satisfying sense of the world to a significant portion of its citizens, and the complexity of the world itself.
They set out to explore that gap in a philosophical history of modern thought they drafted in 1944 and later published as Dialectics of Enlightenment. Their final chapter, "Elements of Anti-Semitism: Limits of Enlightenment," suggested that what gave anti-Semitic ideas their power was not so much their relation to reality, but rather their exemption from reality checks–that is, from the critical testing to which so many other concepts were subjected. "What is pathological about anti-Semitism is not projective behavior as such, but the absence of reflection in it." In their terms, the problem is a heightened resistance to reflection about the gap between our ideas about Jews, Judaism, or Jewishness, and the complexity of the world. From their point of view, anti-Semitism provides adherents with a cognitive comfort: the fantasy that the gap between our understanding of the cosmos and its fearful complexity does not exist.

Thank you so much! All the nice comments I got are giving me the encouragement I need to finish that one and actually post it. Here is an excerpt from the beginning of a longer fic I've been working on (although again it's very much in draft form and idk if I'd be brave enough to post it). It's set 7 years after the end of book 7. Harry is an Auror, Draco's a Ministry Curse Breaker, a weird magical disturbance appears at Number 4 Privet drive. What happens next will shock you. Excerpt from the beginning of the fic under the cut.
Harry Potter was used to strange things happening around him. He had once been sent up to his room, only to find it already occupied by an uninvited house elf and another time he had walked into a dark forest fully expecting never to walk out again, only to find himself in the company of his dead headmaster in what may or may not have been King's Cross. After a most unusual childhood and three years as an Auror he was used to the unexpected, but he still stopped dead in his tracks, gaping in shock, when Chief Auror Robbards called him into his office and he entered to find his superior waiting for him in the company of Draco Malfoy and Vernon Dursley.
Harry blinked. When he opened his eyes, nothing had changed. Malfoy’s presence was surprising, but not entirely incomprehensible. True, he worked down in the Department of Mysteries, but he was a ministry employee and he was a wizard, indisputably part of the magical world that Harry now inhabited; Harry had even run into him a few times. His Uncle, if it was him and not some sort of magical being that was only pretending, was none of these things.
Malfoy nodded stiffly in Harry’s direction, before returning his attention to Vernon, scrutinizing him as though he were something both fascinating and a little disgusting. He had lived a clean life in the years since the war, but apparently while tolerating the existence of muggles was one thing, actually liking them was a step too far. Though they had long since set aside the rivalry of their school days, Harry felt a flash of annoyance at his expression, deserved though it was in this case, unbeknownst to him.
“What’s going on?” he demanded, a little more loudly than he had meant to.
Robbards opened his mouth to explain, but before he could get the words out, Vernon rounded on Harry. “I want my ruddy house fixed!”
“What?” said Harry nonplussed.
“Whatever you’ve done to it, I want it put right!”
“What are you talking about?” He hadn’t set foot at Number 4 Privet Drive since the day he’d left it seven years ago, at the start of what would have been his last year at Hogwarts, if he hadn’t had Horcruxes to look for.
“Playing innocent won’t work! Not this time. After everything we did for you, taking you in, giving you a home when you had no place to go and got dropped on our doorstep without so much as a by-your-leave. Not many would do it. And what did we get for it? Nothing but trouble! And now I suppose you think you can just drive us out with a bit of your hocus pocus and then turn around and sell it. But the game is up. I found out your lot have law enforcement too. They’ll be setting the wizard police on you now, and about time too.” Harry stared at him. Robbards was frowning - possibly because he was taken aback at the way Vernon spoke to Harry, or possibly because he didn’t know what the word “police” meant.
“He is the wizard police,” Malfoy drawled, sneering in such a familiar manner that for a moment Harry felt as though they were back in school and none of the intervening years had passed. It was a bit disorienting to see that sneer directed at someone who he also disliked though.
Malfoy was looking at Vernon as though he were something particularly unpleasant stuck to the bottom of his shoe, though whether it was because he was a muggle or because he disliked Vernon particularly, Harry wasn’t completely sure. He didn’t imagine that Malfoy would accept Vernon’s disgust with the magical world and everyone in it with the same jovial good humor that Arthur Weasely did.
“He—What?” Vernon spluttered, seemingly momentarily struck dumb in horror.
“What’s going on?” Harry asked Robbards quickly, before Vernon could regain his powers of speech and start shouting again.
“I’m sorry about this. He insisted on being present,” Robbards said, looking as though he deeply regretted having agreed.
“It’s my ruddy house! I’m not having you people messing around with it without my input!”
“Yeah. Because you’ve been so helpful,” Malfoy drawled.
“There appears to be some sort of magical disturbance at the muggle residence you occupied in your childhood,” Robbards continued a little louder, shooting Vernon a look, as though afraid he would interrupt again. “We don’t quite know what to make of it. Malfoy’s been investigating. That’s why he’s here.”
That, at least, made sense. Malfoy was a curse breaker. What didn’t make sense was why they needed an Auror. Surely if Robbards thought Harry would take a personal interest in the matter because he’d lived there as a child he would have owled, not called him into this meeting. “What d’you need me for?” he asked.
“Ah. Malfoy thought it might be useful to talk to you. Since you lived there. And I thought. Well...” Robbards looked slightly uncomfortable. “It’s just that we haven’t been able to find a solution yet and whatever is going on there seems to be some sort of uncommonly powerful dark magic. And some if us wondered whether He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named might-”
“He’s dead,” Harry said firmly.
“That’s what we thought last time,” Robbards countered. Harry wanted to point out that last time they hadn’t known about the Horcruxes but that would have required discussing both the Horcruxes and his own connection to Voldemort which he most certainly did not want to do, especially not in a room with his boss, Uncle Vernon and his childhood nemesis.
What he did want to do was finish this conversation and get out of this room as fast as possible. Uncle Vernon was glaring and drumming his fingers on his chair in apparent agreement. Malfoy had begun tugging absentmindedly at his left sleeve as though wanting to be absolutely sure it was pulled all the way down.

Post a 1-5 paragraph excerpt of a WIP/fic idea that may never make it out of your drafts but is near and dear to your heart.
I started this so so long ago and actually looked at it a few days ago and realized that this may simply be one I can't figure out. I know what it's supposed to be (exes who are friends, and then Simon gets engaged and Wille becomes his best man) but I don't know how, and either way, I don't think this particular scene will make it in! So here it is, for your enjoyment (yes. this is longer than 1-5 paragraphs. it could have been even longer but there were too many square brackets in the final few that I couldn't figure out. but hey. More cake!)

With a loud “Wille, you’ll never believe what happened!” Simon stormed into the living room, temporarily making Wille look up from the book he was reading. A book he was enjoying.
He already regretted giving Simon the keys to his house. One of these days, he was sure, Wille was going to come home and find Simon splayed out on his couch, having raided his cupboards and eating all his snacks.
“What, Simon?” he said with feigned disinterest, while trying to finish this last paragraph.
Simon grabbed the book out of his hands before he could, and tossed to the other side of the room.
“Hey!” Wille exclaimed. [maybe this needs to be more of a description of the sound like ‘disgruntled noise’ or something but not disgruntled] “I was reading that!”
“You can read later, I have something to tell you.” Simon sat down on the couch next to him, the widest grin possible on his face and a sparkle in his eyes. “I met someone. And I’m pretty sure he’s the one.”
“You said that about the previous guy. And the guy before that. And the guy before that.”
“Yeah, but this time I’m sure of it.” Simon fell back against the couch cushions, and ran a hand through his black curls. “He’s sweet, and considerate, and incredible in bed. I mean the way he–“
“Okay, okay, I do not need to hear you go on about your sexual escapades again, please. Where did you meet him?”
Simon’s hand got stuck in his curls, and he blushed. Actually blushed, and that’s how Wille knew the answer.
“Please don’t say the club.”
Simon didn’t reply.
“Simon, we talked about this. Not every guy you fuck is the one.”
“Yeah, but this time it’s different! I mean, I met him last Saturday and we went out for dinner last night and Wille,” Simon sat up again, stared into Wille’s eyes. “I came from his place just now. I haven’t even been home yet since Saturday. He has a bed frame. A bed frame that is incredibly suitable to – ” Wille gave him a look, and Simon stopped mid-sentence. “Okay, it doesn’t matter what it’s suitable to, but c’mon.”
“Wait, but if you met him Saturday –“ Wille quickly did the math in his head. “Simon, you’ve known this guy for what, 4 days?”
“I know, I know, it’s too soon but truly, I’m telling you, he’s the one. For real this time.”
Wille rolled his eyes and get up to get his book from where Simon had flung it to heedlessly.
“Sure. Tell me again in a month when it hasn’t crashed and burned again, and maybe I’ll believe you.”
Simon’s problem, according to himself, was that he just loved too much and that they were never able to handle it. And maybe he was right, a bit – almost every guy he met was the one until he found they weren’t ready for a relationship, were still in love with their ex, or, in more than one case, had a girlfriend already.
Simon’s problem, according to Wille, was that he couldn’t see past all the raging red flags. Simon would have killed it if he were a bull fighting in the arena.

hey corny. so i always see people recommending to outline their story before starting it, but could you talk a little bit more about what that means? what is an outline and how do you structure one? how long are the ones you write, depending on the project? do you focus on plot beats or feelings? how specific do you get? can u recommend any readings for learning more?
up front i don't have any resources for this, only experience. and outlines feel like one of those things where it's like... there are a million ways to do it and the way that works for me might not work for you. i have a friend who writes out all his ideas on index cards and that, for me, is insane. but he's also a better writer than me so who can say what is right or wrong.
anyway an outline is essentially a sketch but for a story. you go through the whole thing, start to finish, and figure out what goes where and what happens when. the idea is that this is the stage where you work out all the big picture stuff and make sure it all fits together, now, and not after you've drawn twenty pages and suddenly go "wait shit that doesn't work" and have to do it over. it is much easier to delete and rewrite a paragraph than to redraw several pages.
doing anything more, ie including dialogue or feelings, depends entirely on how useful that information is to you at that point in the process and whether the purpose of the outline is for your own guidance, or so somebody else can tell what you're trying to achieve.
this got really long with multiple examples
here is an excerpt from the original outline i used to pitch Hunger's Bite to publishers. this one had to be polished to a professional standard, because somebody else was going to read it and decide whether they wanted to give me thousands of dollars to tell this story. (also several of the details are no longer accurate. for instance it now takes place 9 years earlier lmao)
this paragraph represents the first eight pages of the book. the final book is 264 pages long, and the outline was 12 pages of paragraphs as dense as this one.
it establishes where we are, who's there, and what they're doing. i describe their conversation, but i don't commit to the dialogue. i will occasionally include snippets of literal dialogue, but usually only if it's Important Dialogue, or i just don't want to forget a good idea i had while outlining. it's not expected at this step.
an outline written as part of a pitch to a publisher should tell the whole story, with all the important details, and leave nothing ambiguous. they need to know the tone, shape, and the arcs. no secrets! all the spoilers. outlines for yourself should do this too, but outlines for others need to be as clear about your vision as possible. again, an outline like this exists for the purpose of getting you paid thousands of dollars. you should write it like that.
in comparison, here's an excerpt from the outline i wrote for revisions to my WIP prose novel, so i could show it to my agent (who already read the draft) to be like "do these changes sound good?" i'm not selling it to anyone yet, just making a guide so i can have a conversation about it. so it doesn't need to be neat, it just needs to be functional and clear. the first chapter was entirely new stuff. the second bit was just writing down what was already in the chapter that existed.
i have historically been very bad at outlining things when i don't think i "need" to, and only wrote this one after having written like 60k words of the book without any overall plan. i gave what i had to my agent for feedback and then sat down and figured out how i could apply it. it's made the whole revisions process significantly less daunting. now i have a checklist for things i need to do! this one was a paragraph or two for each chapter, with the ones that needed a lot of rewriting given a bit more detail.
lastly, here's a bit of the outline for the first roger crenshaw book. i was the only person who had to see this, and since the story was planned to be very short i didn't have to worry about a whole lot. as long as i knew what was supposed to go where, it would work. honestly it's not a whole lot different from the previous example.

this one was like five paragraphs and it did the job, and this story was like 15k words. you only need as much or as little as will actually help you on the page.
basically if you take nothing else from this, it's that there are multiple ways to write an outline, that it does not need to be perfect if you're doing it for yourself, and that it only needs what you think is important (unless it is for other people. then it should have everything). and also it's a good idea to do it earlier in the project than after you've written 60k words or drawn--jesus christ i got up to 12 chapters in never satisfied? it's amazing i didn't quit sooner

George Washington's Farewell Address
George Washington's Farewell Address was published in a Philadelphia newspaper on 19 September 1796, near the end of his second and final presidential term. In it, Washington explains his reasoning for not seeking a third term and warns his countrymen against various dangers facing the United States, such as disunity, partisanship, and foreign entanglements.

Initially, Washington had hoped to retire at the end of his first term in 1792 but had been persuaded to serve a second term in order to deal with a series of crises facing the United States. These included the rise of partisanship within the nation itself (the nationalist Federalist Party against the populist Democratic-Republican Party), as well as the looming threat of getting pulled into the ongoing French Revolutionary Wars in Europe. By 1796, these crises were less pressing, leading Washington to decide that it was time to hand the reins of executive power to a successor. The address, originally penned by James Madison, was extensively rewritten by Alexander Hamilton ahead of its publication so that only a few sections of Madison's original draft remained in the final version. The address was not delivered verbally but was instead printed in the newspaper American Daily Advertiser. The Farewell Address remains one of the most significant and oft-cited addresses in the history of US politics.

…All obstructions to the execution of laws, all combinations and associations under whatever plausible character with the real design to direct, control, counteract, or awe the regular deliberation and action of the constituted authorities, are destructive of this fundamental principle and of fatal tendency. They serve to organize faction; to give it an artificial and extraordinary force; to put in the place of the delegated will of the nation the will of a party, often a small but artful and enterprising minority of the community; and, according to the alternate triumphs of different parties, to make the public administration the mirror of the ill concerted and incongruous projects of faction, rather than the organ of consistent and wholesome plans digested by common councils and modified by mutual interests. However combinations or associations of the above description may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely, in the course of time and things, to become potent engines by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion.
…I have already intimated to you the danger of parties in the state, with particular reference to the founding of them on geographical discriminations. Let me now take a more comprehensive view and warn you in the most solemn manner against the baleful effects of the spirit of party, generally. This spirit, unfortunately, is inseparable from nature, having its root in the strongest passions of the human mind. It exists under different shapes in all governments, more or less stifled, controlled, or repressed; but in those of the popular form, it is seen in its greatest rankness and is truly their worst enemy.
The alternate domination of one faction over another, sharpened by the spirit of revenge natural to party dissension, which in different ages and countries has perpetrated the most horrid enormities, is itself a frightful despotism. But this leads at length to a more formal and permanent despotism. The disorders and miseries which result gradually incline the minds of men to seek security and repose in the absolute power of an individual; and sooner or later the chief of some prevailing faction, more able or more fortunate than his competitors, turns this disposition to the purposes of his own elevation on the ruins of public liberty.
Without looking forward to an extremity of this kind (which nevertheless ought not to be entirely out of sight) the common and continual mischiefs of the spirit of party are sufficient to make it the interest and the duty of a wise people to discourage and restrain it. It serves always to distract the public councils and enfeeble the public administration. It agitates the community with ill-founded jealousies and false alarms, kindles the animosity of one part against another, foments occasionally riot and insurrection. It opens the door to foreign influence and corruption, which find a facilitated access to the government itself through the channels of party passions. Thus the policy and the will of one country are subjected to the policy and will of another.
There is an opinion that parties in free countries are useful checks upon the administration of the government and will serve to keep alive the spirit of liberty. This, within certain limits, is probably true – and in governments of a monarchical cast patriotism may look with indulgence, if not with favor, upon the spirit of party. But in those of the popular character, in governments purely elective, it is a spirit not to be encouraged…
…It is important, likewise, that…those entrusted with confine themselves within their respective constitutional spheres, avoiding in the exercise of powers of one department to encroach upon another. The spirit of encroachment tends to consolidate the powers of all the departments in one and thus to create…a real despotism…The necessity of reciprocal checks in the exercise of political power…has been evinced by experiments ancient and modern, some of them in our country and under our own eyes. To preserve them must be as necessary as to institute them…
…Of all the dispositions and habits which lead to political prosperity, religion and morality are indispensable supports. In vain would that man claim the tribute of patriotism who should labor to subvert these great pillars of human happiness…let it simply be asked where is the security for property, for reputation, for life, if the sense of religious obligation desert the oaths…and let us with caution indulge the supposition that morality can be maintained without religion.
…As a very important source of strength and security, cherish public credit. One method of preserving it is to use it as sparingly as possible…avoiding likewise the accumulation of debt, not only by shunning occasions of expense, but by vigorous exertions in time of peace to discharge the debts which unavoidable wars may have occasioned, not ungenerously throwing upon posterity the burden which we ourselves ought to bear…

Sentences on Sunday!
I have two things I've been working on over the past week to share with you this fine Sunday!
First up - an excerpt from my Buddie fic about Famous Country singer Eddie and Firefighter Buck. This is a small part of the section bout Eddies childhood and how he became a country singer in the first place. Its very much in its draft form (sorry run on sentences I need to fix!) so it may not end up looking like this when I'm done with it, but thats a long way off as this fic is going to take a while to actually write because surprise, surprise it keeps getting longer!
But Eddie was never much good at holding things in for very long. Oh he could bottle things up like the best of them, but it always ended up badly when he did. Building and building until it exploded out of him at importune moments. So, when he got suspended from school for fighting with Luis Garcia after Luis had caught him staring at Noah Johnson in the locker room and had, in the way teenage boys do, proceeded to be a dick about it, he found himself on the receiving end of an angry lecture from his mom and sent to his bedroom with no dinner as his initial punishment until she had spoken with his father and they had decided what was to be done about him. He had angrily sat on his bed, fuming over the injustice of being punished for defending himself against a bully, staring at the guitar propped up in the corner of his bedroom, remembering the words his Abuelo had often said to him; ‘Music, Eddie, is always with you. It lives in you. Setting it free will help you make sense of the world and of yourself. It is your truth, never lose sight of that.’ He remembered those Sunday afternoons at on the porch. They were his favourite time of the week, the few hours when he felt like his true self and free of the expectations placed on him. The guitar had stared back at him and he had found himself crossing the room, picking it up and sneaking out of his window onto the roof. Scrambling up the shingles until he was sat with his back to the chimney stack looking out over his neighbourhood, he began to strum. Rusty fingers fumbling with chords he only half remembered.
And the second thing I have to share - a picture - I'm currently mid editing my submission for the podfic fest coming up in October! I've been having a blast giving podficing a go and I hope you'll all enjoy listening to me reading one of my most favourite Buddie fics when its time to share it (even if I'm convinced everyone will hate my voice and how I've read the fic!!)!!

Writing an immortal character is so fun because here’s the thing—mortals are always running from death and immortals get to watch that struggle from a distance. We run towards the hope of a longer life while immortals runs towards the hope of an end. Being immortal means there’s never an end to your story, and I think there’s something so interesting about that.
Small first draft excerpt of a story I’m writing with an immortal character bc I love this way too much:
She’d daydreamed about death. Mortals feared it, ran from it, did everything within their power to outrun the inevitable. That principle of fear and indulgence was what her casino was built upon. However, unlike them, Valeriya chased death. She ran until her legs ached, her feet rotting, her bones cracking beneath the weight and strain until she crawled across the ground like a starved dog. Even when blood crusted between her joints and she leaked bone marrow across the ground, she continued to chase death—an end to her miserable life.
However, death was the one thing that she could never have.

5. Story with the most: Kudos: Figure This Out Bookmarks: Figure This Out Comments: Louis and the no good, very bad day
6. Work I’m most proud of (and why): Stronger Than the Tide was written for the @1daroaceficfest this year. I started writing a different fic but that one got to be much longer than I had time to write, so I quickly changed course, found new inspiration, and wrote this one so fast. This one proved to me that my fics don't have to be long and complicated to be very meaningful.
7. Work I’m least proud of (and why): I am honestly super proud of everything I posted this year. I feel more confident in my abilities and enjoyed writing so much that I couldn't single any out.
8. Share or describe a favorite review you received: This year I took a writing course and practiced what I'd learned while writing a horror story. Sisterhood is so different than anything I've posted before, so I was a bit nervous to post it. The comments were really great, especially this one from @disgruntledkittenface, "Jinny, I'm so impressed! Your prose is so evocative, and the story gave me chills. You gave such a full, rounded picture of the setting and all of the girls' relationships that I felt like I was there. I admit, I hesitated when I saw the cannibalism tag, but I'm really glad I read this!"
9. A time when writing was really, really hard: This spring was difficult. March and April are always busy and stressful, and then I broke my ankle, had two surgeries, and moved back in with my parents while I healed. Toward the end of May I really wanted to write for @wankersday so I forced myself to try despite some severe writer's block. I drafted Louis and the no good, very bad day entirely on my phone while lying on a couch.
10. A scene or character you wrote that surprised you: The ace of clubs in Stronger Than the Tide was my favorite surprise. This wasn't a part of the original draft at all, but while editing it felt like something was missing to indicate that the cave was siren!Harry's home, so I added Harry's collection of human objects. Because this was an ace/aro fic it felt right to put an ace card in. I found out after that the ace of clubs can represent growth and tending to relationships, which fit the theme perfectly.
Louis looked around the empty cave awkwardly. The bright sunlight illuminated some shiny objects laid out on natural ledges in the stone walls that he hadn’t noticed the last time. He slid his hands into the pockets of his red trackies and wandered closer. Shiny agates, broken seashells, smooth sea glass. A fork with a bent tine, dried wildflowers, a bobbin of old thread. A collection of jewelry. A large scallop shell filled with coins from all over the world. A corked bottle with a piece of paper rolled inside. Louis reached out and picked up a single red playing card. He turned it over: the ace of clubs. “That’s my collection. When I find something unique I save it.” Louis had been so intrigued by the items he hadn’t heard Harry come out of the cave. He set the card down carefully where he'd found it. “You keep your collection here in a cave?” “The cave is my home.”

11. A favorite excerpt of your writing: Niall naming Louis' soulmate goose after Bruce Springsteen in Louis and the no good, very bad day will always make me laugh
Niall and Louis walk down the pavement, with the goose strutting a few feet behind Louis, beak held high. “Did you name him?” Niall asks. “What?” “The goose. Did you name him?” “Why would I do that? He’s not a pet.” “Because he’ll be with you for an unknown amount of time. Seems like he should have a name. Like Horace. Or Lionel. Or Bruce! Bruce the Goose.” The goose lets out a short burst of little honks in what Louis can only describe as a happy goose noise. Louis shakes his head. “No. I’m not naming my Soulmate Goose. He’ll hopefully be gone in a few days and then I can get on with my life.” Honk! Niall says, “Maybe. But I’ve heard that some people are stuck with their Soulmate Goose for almost a year.”
12. How did you grow as a writer this year: This year I took a writing course because I wanted to intentionally work on writing as a craft. I learned a lot from the course and enjoyed dedicating time to practicing and improving my skill.
13. How do you hope to grow next year: I am working on a Pride and Prejudice adaptation and learning a lot from studying the source material. Taking a deep dive into such an iconic novel is teaching me a great deal about what makes that story and its characters so compelling.
14. Who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer or beta or cheerleader or muse etc etc): @lululawrence's @wordplayfics was a huge inspiration. I wrote 5 fics, 3 of which had been sitting in my drafts folder for years. I had so much fun seeing where each random word would take me each week.
15. Anything from your real life show up in your writing this year: Greg twisting his ankle in The Grundy County Corn Maze Incident was inspired by breaking my own ankle. Unfortunately the strong Irish man that helped me get to a car was not Niall . And The Kiss of Sleep that I wrote for @1dtrickortreatfest was inspired by the one and only time I tried melatonin.
16. Any new wisdom you can share with other writers: Keep all your unfinished drafts, even if it seems unlikely you will ever finish them. You never know when the inspiration will strike.
17. Any projects you’re looking forward to starting (or finishing) in the new year: I signed up as an author for @onedirectionbigbang for the first time this year! I am also an artist for two others and can't wait to see what these collaborations will bring

My word is SYLPH.
I have been out of the loop for a bit (so much to doooo....), but this brought me right back in! I'm working on a longer piece, but it only has rough drafts of a handful of scenes right now, so it will be some time before it sees the light of day. No guarantees that these sentences will even survive.

(No pressure but) tell me about your wiiiiipppss!!!
!! Hi thank you for the ask!! <3 TwT
Putting under a cut because it got suuuper long, I hope not TOO long dfjhsddsjfhhsd. Everything is Mello/Near unless otherwise stated.
I'm going to start with the WIPs we're not gonna have much to say about publicly. They're basically... two full AUs, each set in the same base universe and within similar conditions, except the Mello/Near dynamic plays out differently in each, because there's a couple major differences which butterfly-effect the characters and how their stories play out:
to escape an empire has a main fic (of seven chapters + an epilogue) and two sequels (one of which is so self-indulgent I don't know if it'll see the light of AO3) in the works. The main fic is almost fully drafted and already partially beta'd (which, I'm not @-ing our beta directly in this longass post but HEARTFELT THANK YOU FOR HELPING US MIDWIFE OUR FIC INTO THE WORLD SO SKILLFULLY)
and throw me into life (a lot less developed because we're keeping it on the backburner for after empire, for reasons of "the universe is similar but the characterisation is so different and we don't want to accidentally get mixed up").
We don't talk about either much in public -- because we're 100% sure nobody has written the concept before, but we write slowly and we'd be sad if someone else got to doing something with that idea before us sdhfjgsdhf. (That said, we did post a couple of excerpts from one of the sequels to empire: here and here!)
And then in our series sweet atonement (in which Near acquires an introject of Mello as a coping mechanism for the grief brought upon him by Mello's death, and then we make the two of them interact in various ways; it's self-indulgent plurality/multiplicity fiction as much as it is Death Note fanfic) -- we've already published six fics, but we have many ideas for more, including in no particular order:
at least one POV from (some of) the folks who work with Near, pre- and post-introject!Mello
exploring how Near and introject!Mello learn how to work together and/or sometimes clash (this spans several WIPs actually, one of which we expanded on a little here)
exploring Near's grief and depression and burnout and such (because the emotional injury he sustained when Mello died does NOT magically disappear just because he has (a) Mello back, and on top of that, being L on his own is incredibly taxing for him)
exploring introject!Mello's grief and assimilated emotions (non-exhaustive list: he remembers what dying was like; Matt is still dead; Near is really not doing well which affects Mello in multiple ways)
at least one other PWP
a conclusion-ish piece of what their cooperation looks like when it's fully established (like a decade or two after introject!Mello first shows up)
and possibly more that are just embryos of ideas in our Discord channels!!
Not bothering with the working titles here because when we work on WIPs in this universe, we often end up combining them or splitting the ideas into different works for pacing/focus reasons -- it's very fluid, we haven't planned anything ahead like we did with empire. It's just a collection of whichever moments we feel most like writing at the time.
Originally we'd planned on keeping this universe for after we'd finished empire, but it didn't turn out that way -- both because empire got so much longer than we expected it to be (we'd planned for about 10,000 words, it's at nearly 35,000 sequels included and will probably keep growing...) and the editing process is also taking longer than anticipated; and because sweet atonement keeps grabbing us by the throat at semi-random and we've learned to ride those waves when they happen.
We're also in the process of fleshing out some of the Matt/Mello/Near drabbles we wrote for DN Rarepair Week into longer pieces!! Toying with the Matt/Near of #2 - Absence currently :3
And then we have some tiny WIPs that are basically just... bits and pieces. Scenes that could maybe be reabsorbed into other works, single paragraphs or lines, concepts and ideas, bits we cut out of one fic but might reuse in another, etc.
So that's everything we've got cooking right now!! If you have read this far, I would like to award you this:

Do you like Fire Emblem, gay women, supporting artists, or just really enjoy my work?
Because I’m on VGen now, and I need your help to get verified!
Until I’m verified the only method of transaction available to me is paypal, which severely limits what I can write, not the mention I don’t trust that company within a hundred meters of my livelihood.
This is however a necessary step towards me actually making a living doing this hobby that I adore, and I don’t mind writing sfw fics too.
Thus you are all invited to the Safics… something, it’s an event and I have no idea what to name it.
The way this will work is that I’ll be opening a batch of safe for work commission slots on VGen for a really low price, and if commissioning artists isn’t your thing you can still help out by sharing or reposting this announcement to increase its reach!
These commissions are likely some of the cheapest I’ll ever offer, and for the price-to-word ratio they will probably be far and above the best deal I’ll give outside of other events like this: I am offering 750-1,000 words, fully edited, for $10 USD. The fics could also potentially be longer if they click with me and I get inspired! In that case, there would be no extra cost associated with the commission despite the total word count surpassing 1,000 words.
That’s 75-100 words for every dollar you spend, and that’s not even factoring in the time spent proofreading and editing!
Because of the nature of this being a larger batch of commissions it may take a bit of time to get all off them done, but I promise to keep my prospective clients updated on their fics progress (including letting them know when I’ve started it) so long as VGen offers me the tools to do so, which I’m sure it does.
The current plan is to release four separate batches of three commission slots, but that may fluctuate as the event goes on.
Additionally, how much say you have in the finished product is also completely up to you!
-Do you want to mostly be surprised after giving me your prompt? I’ll do it without any input.
-Do you want to have a big say in the direction of every aspect of the fic? I can share excerpts or even the entire draft at multiple stages to make sure it’s going a direction you approve of, while also gathering feedback and advice from you to help make it as good as possible.
-Do you want a mix of those two options? Because I can do that too.
I have experience with both extremes of the writing process from my pretty extensive work offering free requests on Tumblr, for anons I didn’t really have much choice in the matter but when possible I would dm the requestor to ask how much involvement they wanted, and in some cases even share the entire fic as I was writing it!
Because it’s only ten bucks and I’m sure there are at least some fees attached, payment IS due up front, but if for whatever reason I find myself unable to complete the prompt adequately you’ll receive a full refund AND get to keep a pdf of the work in progress draft.
Making this experience as good as it possibly can be for the both of us is something I strive for, but that does go both ways. Overworking myself super hard and burning at this stage out would be catastrophic, and it is something I’m wary of, so because of that the amount of hours I work in a given day will be capped to help keep my work life balance reasonable.
To put all the information in one place: you will receive 750-1,000 words that amount to a fully edited realization of your prompt created to the best of my abilities, either as a pdf file or a google doc.
I cannot give any concrete information on how long each fic will take to be ready, both because of the fact these are batch commissions and because I’ve never done something quite like this before, but I do promise to be transparent with you and offer a full refund (so long as I’ve not yet started on your fic) if the wait becomes too much.
Batch comm rules:
Requests must be safe for work, no horny and no over the top violence. Trust me, there’s a reason I will stop accepting Paypal payments the moment I am verified.
I retain the right to reject any request for any reason, even something as asinine as not vibing with it. Forcing myself to create something that doesn’t click with me will result in a final product that neither of us will be happy with and you deserve better from a commission than that.
They gotta be gay. Well not exactly, but Safics is my name for a reason, I’m not super interested in writing mlw or mlm fics, I am completely on board with nblw though. This rule applies much less to platonic fics but I do generally prefer to write stories that are not about men. Also it should go without saying but trans women ARE women and I am completely comfortable writing them, in fact I actually enjoy it!
Because I am underselling myself here tips are appreciated if you really enjoy your fic, but they are in no way necessary much less expected. Positive reviews would be appreciated as well, perhaps even more-so since those are one of the requirements to get verified.

2024 WRITING REVIEW
so apparently @genevievefangirl tagged me in this like a week ago and i wrote it, put it in drafts, then promptly forgot about it. sorry for the delay bestie sob

word count posted for last year: 180,918 (starting April)
fandoms i wrote for: dead boy detectives, glee
pairings: payneland, klaine
stories with the most kudos, bookmarks and comment threads: the manuscript of real people which is unsurprising given its five times longer than even my second longest work. it's not a fair fight. the oneshots were never gonna stand a chance
work i’m most proud of (and why): lemonade & sunrises, baby! i don't have a banger reason as to why - something about it just really speaks to my soul on a deep and personal level. i just really like it
work i’m least proud of (and why): probably dandelion days seeing as i have yet to finish it despite saying like 30 times that i would. something about it just doesn't really speak to me? it was my second fic i ever started writing, so i was still figuring out what makes me buzz, and it just turned out not to be that

a time when writing was really, really hard: september-november was a bit hard for me, because i was going through some really difficult personal issues then, so writing also in turn became a bit more difficult. doing anything at all was difficult tho lol so what can you do
a scene or character you wrote that surprised you: chris from manuscript. i didn't really mean for him to show up but people in the comments LATCHED onto him to the point that like i feel like i should find a way to bring him back
a favorite excerpt of your writing:
"Charles is infinitely more than lovely" is a line which has always stuck out to me. it's from this excerpt, chapter 13 of manuscript
how did you grow as a writer last year: i've gotten a lot more consistent about writing regularly. i figured out How To Write Fanfiction as well, which was cool
who was your greatest positive influence this year as a writer (could be another writer, beta, cheerleader, etc.) i gotta say, @professional-lurker-42 has been the most incredible cheerleader throughout my manuscript writing journey, and has grown into be just one of the most amazing friends.
anything from your real life show up in your writing last year: god when doesn't it lol. but honestly it's not cathartic or really anything at all, it's just genuine. even if the experiences can be different, the emotions are very real.
i will say, though, that specifically as edwin grappled with his sexuality throughout manuscript, reading the comments people wrote was incredibly cathartic. like middle school me was fundamentally healed by hearing strangers on the internet say that this is not the thing that will ruin his life and it will be okay
any new wisdom you can share with other writers: you can always do better. you could always fix something and make it better and revise more and just like you're never going to get it to perfect. so, and i say this with so much love, get over yourself and finish it. you're not GOING to make it perfect so stop trying to make it perfect and instead make it yours and make it real
any projects you’re looking to starting (or finishing) this year? i'll be finishing manuscript in 2025, probably vibing through a lot of we'll carry on as well. i also have a few other ideas in the works, which, shortly before i finish manuscript will commence, to "take over" in a way. hyped for those as well!
