Writing is thinking, but it’s thinking slowed down — stilled —
... And that’s one of the arguments for writing well — for taking the time and summoning the focus to do so. Good writing burnishes your message. It burnishes the messenger, too.
You may be dazzling on your feet, an extemporaneous ace, thanks to the brilliant thoughts that pinball around your brain. There will nonetheless be times when you must pin them down and put them in a long email. Or a medium-length email. Or a memo. Or, hell, a Slack channel. The clarity, coherence, precision and even verve with which you do that — achieving a polish and personality distinct from most of what A.I. spits out — will have an impact on the recipients of that missive, coloring their estimation of you and advancing or impeding your goals.
If you’re honest with yourself, you know that, because you know your own skeptical reaction when people send you error-clouded dreck. You also know the way you perk up when they send its shining opposite. And while the epigrammatic cleverness or audiovisual genius of a viral TikTok or Instagram post has the potential to shape opinion and motivate behavior, there are organizations and institutions whose internal communications and decision-making aren’t conducted via social media. GIFs, memes and emojis don’t apply.
When my friend Molly Worthen, a history professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a frequent contributor to Times Opinion, took the measure of the influential diplomat Charles Hill for her 2006 book “The Man on Whom Nothing Was Lost,” she noted that a principal reason for his enormous behind-the-scenes influence was his dexterity with the written word. He took great notes. He produced great summaries. He made great arguments — on paper, not just on the fly.
Worthen noted in her book that “transmitting ideas into written words is hard, and people do not like to do it.” As a result, someone who performs that task gladly, quickly and nimbly “in most cases ends up the default author, the quarterback to whom others start to turn, out of habit, for the play.”
Good writing announces your seriousness, establishing you as someone capable of caring and discipline. But it’s not just a matter of show: The act of wrestling your thoughts into logical form, distilling them into comprehensible phrases and presenting them as persuasively and accessibly as possible is arguably the best test of those very thoughts. It either exposes them as flawed or affirms their merit and, in the process, sharpens them.
Writing is thinking, but it’s thinking slowed down — stilled — to a point where dimensions and nuances otherwise invisible to you appear....
I think you can take the “pen and paper” out of the equation — replace them with keystrokes in a Google Doc or Microsoft Word file — and the point largely holds. That kind of writing, too, forces you to concentrate or to elaborate. A tossed-off text message doesn’t. Neither do most social media posts. They have as much to do with spleen as with brain.
What place do the traditional rules of writing and the conventional standards for it have in all this? Does purposeful, ruminative or cathartic writing demand decent grammar, some sense of pace, some glimmer of grace?
Maybe not. You can write in a manner that’s comprehensible and compelling only or mostly to you. You can choose which dictums to follow and which to flout. You’re still writing.
But show me someone who writes correctly and ably — and who knows that — and I’ll show you someone who probably also writes more. Such people’s awareness of their agility and their confidence pave the way. Show me someone who has never been pressed to write well or given the tutelage and tools to do so and I’ll show you someone who more often than not avoids it and, in avoiding it, is deprived of not only its benefits but also its pleasures.
Yes, pleasures. I’ve lost count of the times when I’ve praised a paragraph, sentence or turn of phrase in a student’s paper and that student subsequently let me know that the passage had in fact been a great source of pride, delivering a jolt of excitement upon its creation. We shouldn’t devalue that feeling. We should encourage — and teach — more people to experience it.
— Frank Bruni, from "A.I. or no A.I., it pays to write — and to write well" (NY Times, December 21, 2023)

And so, this little journey of mine comes to an end.
I feel like I should apologize to Nakatani. To YagaKimi in general.
I wasn't a big fan of it. I knew it was good, but it hadn't managed to touch me back in the day when I followed it monthly. I guess there could be many reasons, but I know the main one:
I wasn't mature enough. I didn't get it. Not the way I do now.
I started rewatching the anime because the ending got stuck to my head. And also I remembered the directorial work to be great. I wasn't wrong, of course: The anime is a beyond perfect adaptation.
But I couldn't have foreseen how much I would love it. How I'd keep noticing the details. How the characters would make their way into my heart by kicking off every memory I had of the manga and recontextualizing it.
I... don't cry with manga. Manga and comics may be the last medium that managed to get to me. Audiovisual mediums (movies, series, anime)? Videogames? Been crying to them for a few years. Books? Less often, but not all that uncommon.
The only manga that had managed to make me cry previously was Mob Psycho.
I always say Girl Friends is my favourite manga. I still love it, don't get me wrong, but I may have to reassess this take now.
Yagate Kimi Ni Naru/Bloom Into You is... Amazing. And I'm very glad I read it again. I wish I can some day create something that evokes in someone a fraction of what this evoked in me.

I'm a video essay kind of guy, so I've seen a lot of videos where people compare and contrast the tools and limitations of different genres. For instance, comparing theater to film, or manga/books to audiovisual media trying to adapt them.
So when Aquamarine Hoshino talks about how GOA's script was written to fit the medium and Abiko's probably won't account for the stage equipment, I have some idea what he might be talking about. But I also recognize that I'm probably some flavor of Spiders Georg about this, and also that Aqua is being extremely vague about the probable weaknesses in Abiko's script.

I see Dr Who has decided to reinvent the US american comic books system of just relaunching an ongoing story with a completely arbitrary - vaguely justified by story twists - number #1 by pulling a fresh new season 1, no doubt in the hopes that it'll encourage people not familiar with the previous material to give the story a chance from there... I wonder if this type of absurdity is a first for the audiovisual medium

Journey to Ancient Rome
The new series "Those About To Die" is astonishingly good -- and I say that as someone who did Latin all her school and university days.
I don't care about any of the characters, but that's all right -- I am in it for the insulae and the street kitchens and the phallus shaped oil lamps.
I got the feeling of being in Ancient Rome from books -- I read Anne Rice's Pandora shortly after having been in Pompeii and Herculaneum and had the feeling I could walk through her scenes, and everything fit -- but never from a fully audiovisual medium before.
Just look at the colours -- none of that white-on-white 'classicist' nonsense.
There is only one big question I have about that production.
Why did Roland Emmerich call his work 'Those About To Die' when the word 'Morituri' was right there and would have kicked so much more ass?

Genuinely so many people would prefer audiovisual media to reading the random tiktok book of the month but the aesthetic of "being a book reader" is much more desirable than "I watch a lot of Kdrama" like.
I am convinced thats entirely it bc all the complaints I hear abt (paragraphs being too long, movement being too descriptive, etc) would like. Not matter in film!
Idk i feel like booktook is just too married to the ideas of "being a book reader" that they miss out on other mediums to tell stories they clearly want to consume.

The thing about visual novels is that it's probably one of the best mediums that aren't traditional books that you can experience in order to improve your traditional book medium writing skills due to being what can perhaps somewhat to very reductively be called books with sounds and moving pictures and clicking where you can read the text at your own pace and even have the text be presented to you by the creators' own pace. Of course when you're writing on paper or on a google doc or ao3 or whatever, you have to keep in mind the two mediums' differences and be sure to write actual visual and audial descriptions to some degree as the audience can't read your mind like they can read a visual novel and so on, but it does help to have a more text heavy medium still when compared to others that you can draw on that also has audiovisual aesthetics and very observable settings that can add inspiration for your writing.
Speaking of inspiration, while you might not be able to gather as much on how you actually want to write text from a movie or a song for instance, you can of course draw inspiration from any medium really. One of the best mediums for story inspiration I'd argue, at times better than visual novels even, are video games, especially again the more text and story heavy genre of rpgs. Some of the most inspiring works for my writing ideas are from jrpgs that I might not have even played so much as heard detailed story descriptions of for instance like the Xenosaga triology or the Trails of series. The best way to get inspiration is to of course have life experiences but also to have a lot of life experience with other works of art of all kinds. And luckily there's a fuckton of art.

are there any other art mediums in which you might find something like speedrunning? like i dont mean “reading a book really fast” or something, i mean treating a work like an optimization puzzle speedrunners take a game, which is a full work of interactive audiovisual art etc, and turn it into a puzzle of minimizing inputs to get the work to reach a predetermined state for better or worse, this interpretation is interesting can we apply this style of framing anywhere else in art?

That's an academic term for that in multimodal linguistics and it is "affordance".
Every medium "affords" to express certain meanings in certain ways, and some mediums happen to be the most efficient at expressing a handful of meanings than all others. Those things mediums are capable of doing are its affordances.
You can do intermodal translation to express the same meanings, but the loss in efficiency in some parts and the gain of efficiency in others WILL make it a different sensory and emotional experiece, even if the conceptual end result of the communication remains mostly the same.
In non-nerdy words, what I mean is that you CAN translate an image into words, and you CAN translate words into a image. But it's a quantum physics exclusionary principle thing: if you keep the conceptual meanings intact (the plotline, the cast, the worldbuilding, the moral message if applicable etc.), there's a high likelihood that the feelings ellicted on the audience will be different (they might even veer into boredom depending on how extensive the reafing of the translation is in comparison to the reading of the original). To keep the affective meanings intact (feelings and senses), then you have to compromise the concepts.
It's not impossible for a transmodal translation to hit a sweet spot in which it sacrifices very little in both fronts and impacts the audience in a way that feels similar to the original work, but it's never guaranteed that it's possible for every case. The affordances used in the original medium need to be very close to the ones that the second medium has in its arsenal.
That's the whole reason why art and storytelling are so diverse in their mediums. If you could express every single concept and every single affective experiece with a single mode of communication, we wouldn't have others (or they wouldn't be as widespread).
Corollary: if you wanted to produce a play, a movie, a TV series or a comic book, but forces yourself to write a book because it's cheaper and more accessible, there's a 90% chance that it will not be a good reading, or that it won't feel "right" to you, because those other visual/audiovisual mediums have different affordances.
(Writing IS visual, you aren't hearing my words here. If you are using a screen reading software because you are visually impaired, you aren't hearing my words. You are hearing someone (or some AI) speak aloud what they interpret as my words, adding inflections and asides if they feel that the visual input is significant and should impact that reading.)
Likewise, if you want to extensively communicate things that don't lend themselves well to visuals (internal monologue, visual perception failings or quick succession of subtle feeling changes, for instance, but mostly internal monologue), let's just say that using visual/audiovisual mediums hardly ever make for a fulfiling creative experice. Expressing the unseen is verbal language's most distinctive affordance, and writing's minimalist physical expression encourages high densities of meaning and makes it really cheap and relatively fast to produce in big amounts. So, books are still the go-to brainy character pieces that scrutinize character thoughts and feelings and similarly structured stories.
Those are a lot of words to say that OP's belief is science-backed. If you want to know more about multimodality and affordances, I recommend Gunther Kress's body of work (start wherever the synopsis/paper summary entices you more), or some piece of science communication that uses Kress as a reference (in case you feel intimidated by any jargon or vocabulary that pops up, although I think he is very accessible to be read directly as far as academic writers go).
I firmly believe that some stories can never be translated into a different medium and that's okay

the truth is that audiovisual media is not my preferred medium, and I'd much rather read or see a comic book than watch a movie or a series. im tired of pretending otherwise
#the reason i like lynch is because his approach to movies is Different so i don't feel like i'm being bombarded with information#same with movies like Angel's Egg#or ghost in the shell#we have all these moments of quiet and even then i'd much rather read about them

I've been watching The Apothecary Diaries, and I've been really enjoying like 90% of it. But the way background characters react to Jinshi (the pretty-boy eunuch) is really bugging me.
Basically every woman who isn't a named character reacts with melodramatic cooing and swooning because he's so hot. If this was just a silly running gag, I could probably tolerate it, but it's given some actual dramatic weight, which lets it taint the rest of the series. It makes Maomao's lack of reaction to Jinshi feel less like a specific character trait and more like a symptom of Not Being Like Other Girls; it makes any criticism of those background characters feel a bit more like mockery of "flighty, shallow bitches"; their errors feel less like ignorance and more like stupidity; etc. Also, it just kinda feels disrespectful to women on the face of it.
I wonder if that's a consequence of adaptation. The Apothecary Diaries was originally a light novel, and prose usually isn't as specific as animation. The swooning could have been described in more general terms, which the animation director interpreted in an extreme manner. Which isn't always a bad choice—"Animation is exaggeration"—but it can sometimes introduce unwanted consequences.
There are definitely some scenes where you can feel that it used to be a novel. Montages with narration over them that sounds exactly like a couple paragraphs meant to describe a long stretch of time instead of a specific scene, for instance. It's handled pretty well, but it's basically impossible to cleanly adapt that kind of passage to an audiovisual medium.
Maybe I should read the books?
