The most frustrating thing about period pieces is that when it tries to depict issues in that period there will always be a portion of people who'll go "damn that's problematic" like... it makes me wanna rip my hair out

"why would you ship mizu and taigen together they're sooooo toxic ugh taigen is AWFUL and mizu should be with ME instead!!!"
of course they're toxic they're both deranged and terrible and that's why they're perfect for each other.
cuz like omg you think mizu would treat you well? mizu would abandon you. look at how she left ringo multiple times. ringo who treats her so well and is nothing but patient and caring and loyal. if you are insecure she will laugh at you because she has no social tact. look at how mikio said "it's a stupid dream" talking about his ambitions of regaining his honour and mizu straight up chuckles and tells him he's right because it IS a stupid dream. and at this point their relationship was cordial and she was even warming up to him!
like. arguably, taigen would be a better romantic partner (per the ideals of his time and culture of course), or at least he would be on paper. cuz i mean as a husband, as he is now, i think he'd be awful. but i'm talking about if you and him were dating or courting or just seeing each other romantically, he would be good to you. like we saw how he behaved with akemi and he was nothing but sweet and gentle. the very reason akemi wanted to marry him so bad was because she KNOWS without a doubt that he respects women and would treat her well. "oh but he cheated on her with the prostitutes while celebrating his engagement!" yeah but per the norms of the time and place, it was not considered cheating and akemi (as well as any wife or romantic partner of that period) would not have minded or even cared.
and yes taigen IS an asshole and he IS obnoxious but come on. so is mizu, if she is allowed to act like herself around you. mizu will tease you and mock you and challenge you and even poke at your insecurities (see:her goading mikio on even though he clearly did not view her teasing as light-hearted banter and took it all very personally). she would tell you to your face if she thinks you're being annoying (see:mizu rolling her eyes and telling akemi to straight up just "shut up" when she'd believed mizu had killed taigen).
mizu is not merely a hot and talented badass with a sword and the insane hyperfocus on her desire for revenge which literally drives her to withstand like, extreme amounts of damage and survive it. mizu is also flawed and the show does a good job at showcasing this, and showing us that she's not merely a victim but also a multilayered person. we see throughout that mizu is blunt and sarcastic and prideful.
oh what's that? oh right, very similar to taigen, who is also hot and talented with a sword and with insane hyperfocus on his desire to duel mizu and regain his honour. taigen who is also flawed (though, arguably, more so) as he is blunt and sarcastic and prideful.
the only thing that sets mizu and taigen apart is the fact that taigen is a man and is not mixed race, which thus affects their positions in society and how people perceive them. these are external factors. taigen being a boy who is not blue-eyed allowed him to easily mingle with the other kids in the village, all of whom were similarly fed the same prejudiced values which led them to gang up against mizu and bully her.
but take all that away. strip them down to the bare essentials. suddenly it's like they are the same person copy and pasted.
and that's what makes them even more interesting. yes absolutely they would be toxic. whatever souls are made of, mizu's and taigen's are the same (derogatory). and we literally see them fight all the time!!!! but the thing is they are both deranged when it comes to this.
do you get me. they both literally get turned on by sparring. mizu's whole spar with mikio was her way of flirting. just look at how she smirked at him and said "unsheathe it" like it's clear that this is an innuendo of not just unsheathing his weapon but also what's in his pants. then during the chopsticks fight with taigen in the snow, despite mizu literally being injured and taigen trying to attack her, mizu gets attracted to him. meanwhile taigen got a boner after wrestling with her in the forge.
taigen goes around saying he wants to kill mizu to regain his honour but he still literally risks life and limb for her constantly. mizu gives ringo stomach ulcers by going around flinging herself into near-death situations 24/7. she ups and leaves her beloved swordfather with barely a goodbye twice to pursue her batshit far-fetched quest for revenge (against people she doesn't even KNOW btw because she literally starts off with practically No Leads and not even knowing the NAMES of the white men who are her maybe-fathers).
these bitches are crazy and you know what good for them. that shit needs to be contained and quarantined though and that's why in that sense they would be good together.
i want to put them both in a jar and shake it very hard and see what happens. personally i think they will argue and insult each other while working perfectly in sync with each other to break out of the jar and then proceed to kill me and make out sloppy style over my dead body while they're both covered in blood.
like that's it that's the dynamic. send post.

ok I’m talking about this now just to get my own thoughts on it out there and bc i haven’t seen anyone else do it and if itll drive me up the walls if I don’t say anything. Anyway.
I really like the way Mizu’s gender is presented. I personally use he and they interchangeably, but I do actually feel like Mizu is the kind of character where having to use pronouns for the character at all is kind of….undermining him? does that make any sense?? obviously you have to but I’ve found myself using Mizu’s name a lot when talking abt them because of it. There is SO many different ways you can interpret Mizu, but to mizu himself you can see that they don’t care if people see them as a man Or a woman. When Ringo sees that Mizu isn’t “really” a man, he keeps using he/him for Mizu and referring to them as a man, and Mizu doesn’t correct this. At the same time, you can kind of see that Mizu was coerced into a life of masculinity that he seems uncomfortable with at first, but he grows into it. when the people in the picture encouraging or forcing him to live that way are gone, he continues to do so regardless. This could be taken either as him having grown comfortable with the way he presents, or continuing to live as a man because otherwise, despite his competence, they also firmly believe that women have very little options in Edo era Japan, and thusly his mission would be severely hindered. Honestly it’s so fascinating and I really like the way it’s done and all the different ways it could be taken!!

if I had a nickel for everytime I saw an animated wasian character with blue eyes and dark blue or black hair I'd have 3 nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened thrice.

also how come every time there is a sex pervert character in something they have to be evil and/or have trauma that made them this way... or i guess otherwise if its something where the whole plot is centered on their sexuality they can sometimes be badass and sexy instead. where;s the boring and mundane sex pervert rep? this is why roman roy was so important to the culture

OH I was JUST talking to @fuukonomiko about this the other day!
Basically it's my reading of this that Mizu saw themself as the man on the right (who is clean-shaven, more youthful/feminine and softer in appearance, resembling a wakashu, and also more similar in appearance to Mizu themself).
That would then put Taigen in parallel with the man in the middle (who, it's important to note, is a samurai whose skills Mizu had admired and been impressed by, earlier in this same episode; and this is notable because in the episode right before this, Mizu genuinely complimented and admired Taigen's swordsmanship in a similar way).
So in this scene, the samurai (Taigen) turns away from kissing a woman (possibly paralleling Akemi), to instead kiss the man on the right (Mizu).
Seeing this, Mizu is reminded of their own desires and attraction towards Taigen, thus implying that Mizu sees a chance that Taigen would want them the same way that samurai wants the wakashu-like man.
Thus, in conclusion: gay samurais, your honour ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Mizu Headcanons
AN: Broo ive just finished blue eye samurai and im obsessed w it..so here are some headcanons! SHE WAS SO FINE IN THE LAST SCENE BTW UGHH
(I’ll be separating it based on genre eg. angst or fluff)
Tumblr media
Warnings: Angst, Contains mentions of death & murder, spoilers! The fluff is x reader
(if you know me irl, no you don’t)
Angst:
- Mizu often thinks about how life would be if she chose to forgave her husband and didn’t kill him
- After Ringo leaving her she feels awful for what she’s done and wishes that she could let go of her revenge path but cannot
- Once Mizu’s “mother” betrayed her and Mizu killed her, she still had the motive of killing her father, but instead of the motive to avenge her mother it was to curse the man that made her live in the first place
- She understood that she never should’ve been born in the first place and was born as monstrous, hence her obsession with revenge. But there is obviously a part of her that wants to live a peaceful life
- She normally has panic attacks but no one has ever witnessed them except Swordfather
- When she was with her husband (the night before the sparring) that was the only time she felt loved for who she was
- She wanted to show who she really was as her husband asked to, and once she did she was called “a monster” and now she’s reluctant to show anyone even half of who she really is
- She overworks herself to the point of exhaustion and most times collapses, forgetting to eat and rest
- Whenever she checks her reflection, she imagines herself with brown/black eyes
- (Canon) she wears the same clothes she wore since she was a child and stitches them whenever they tear
- because of her binder she often has trouble breathing but she’s so used to it she thinks it’s normal
- She once wanted to gouge her eyes out so she won’t witness the looks of disgust when they see her eyes
- She’s entirely convinced that there’s no way she’ll ever be truly loveable. She’s convinced she’s monstrous in every way, from the hues of her blue eyes to the violence she bears
(MY POOR BABY I LOVE HER SM I JUST WANNA SEE HER HAPPY N SATISFIED 😭😭)
Fluff/Not angst(finally)
- Love language is quality time & acts of service
- Although she’s not aware of it, she has an unconscious fixation with music. Mizu has always been drawn to musical festivals and it both calms and excites her
- If given the time, she normally asks if you want to go to festivals (her unnamingly pleading for you to agree) and her face is relaxed the whole time, her fingers intertwined with yours
- I feel her normal dates with you would be very simple. She’d enjoy just spending time with you, quietly or with small chatter
- She loves stargazing with you. My god. Laying beside each other, feeling each others warmth contrary to the harsh snow as you look at the different constellations
- Actually, you’d be looking at the constellation while she looks at you with a small smile tugging at her lips, while she adores the light in your eyes as you gaze up
- Speaking of holding hands she LOVES to hold your hand, doesn’t matter if your hand is cold or warm, it intertwines with hers perfectly
- Whenever you compliment her eyes she doesn’t believe you until you say it a thousand times
- takes a LONG time to warm up to you, but once she does it is SO worth it
- unconsciously misses your warmth, once sleeping she searches for your hand to hold or for you to hug
- speaking of hugging, i think she can be both spoons but mostly big spoon
- loves resting her head on your chest but loves wrapping her arms around you, ensuring that you are safe
AN: GUYS I NEED HER SO BAD U DONT GET IT

Hiiii! I have such a good request, it’s been on my mind for quite a while now! So can we get a Muzan x reader? She’s been with him since he was human, she loves his long hair. She gets really annoyed and sad that he cuts it. She literally has a mental breakdown because he cuts it. She’s really over dramatic btw.
I can’t blame her though, muzan with long hair was just… 🥵…
Muzan Cuts His Hair
Muzan blinked his eyes as he gave you a dull stare.
"What ... is the problem?"
He can't comprehend what the fuss is about. All he did was cut his hair so that it was easier to move around in. He accidentally burnt some split ends into it too many times while developing his demon attacks.
"How could you, Muzan!?" you whine, sobbing and covering your face.
"It's hair," is all Muzan can say.
"It was so beautiful! If you didn't want to make split ends, you could have tied it up! Muzaaaaaaann!!"
"I do not have the intention to waltz around like some of these cocky young samurai do with their long ponytails."
You scream. "How could you have done this without asking me!?"
Muzan sighs and tries to walk away.
"No!" you wail and run to him, grabbing onto his clothes to keep him from moving away. "You need to regrow your hair! You can do that, can't you? Regrow it just -- just -- halfway to what it was before! Pleeeassee!"
"No. Stop making a fuss."
"You're not the same anymore!"
"I am the same. It's hair."
"Muzaaaann!!"
He takes a deep breath and takes your hands, removing them from his clothes before he turns to face you. "Y/n. It's still my hair. It's still wavy. It's still soft. It's my hair. This conversation is over."
His coldness to the situation makes you cry even more and you fall to your knees begging him to somehow grow his hair back.
"I will let it grow back naturally. Does that suit you?"
He's not really going to, but by the time it grows back past his shoulders, you would have been used to the new length anyway and wouldn't be so whiny about it. He thinks.
"Why naturally, Muzan!? We're demons! We don't have to do anything naturally!"
"I cannot grow it back on its own."
"How!?" you start to become more demanding. "You can grow more brains and more hearts but you can't grow more hair!?"
He gives you a blank stare. "I can't. So, you'll have to be patient." His eyes slid to the side as he looked out of the corners of his vision, noticing Tamayo loitering around by the door. "Deal with Tamayo."
"Tamayo?" you ask in a surprised tone.
Muzan gestures with his chin towards the door.
You look and see her back away. "Oh ..."
Muzan starts to leave.
"Where are you going?" you ask him.
"To try to turn that red spider lily I have blue. Now, either continue crying here or forget about my hair and come help me."
You decide to give in for the time being and help Muzan with his experiments. If anything, you simply did not want to end up having to talk to Tamayo.
By the way, you do get your way and he grows his hair back somehow. Here's Muzan in the Sengoku Era with his short hair:
Tumblr media
And here's him later when he turns Akaza into a demon:
Tumblr media
And Muzan in Hantengu's backstory:
Tumblr media
So, you'll get plenty more time to enjoy his luscious locks 😁
