Dr. Stone Characters, Best to Worst: BAKING

1. Like you said, Francois. No brainer. Francois can bake bread, cake, whatever with their eyes closed and hands tied behind their back (who tf knows how but they can, better believe it)

2. Hear me out, Ukyo. I think I’d put Ukyo here. I’m a sucker for the idea of him actually being a fairly good cook and baker. I know he mentions nothing of the sort, but he gives me domestic hubbie vibes, yk?

3. Tsukasa. Probably cooked for his sister when she was conscious. And occasionally, maybe baked. So I think he would have a decent handle on it.

4. Gen. Not bad, not great. The food comes out edible. He can bake cookies and cake and it tends to keep shape and be tasty. He’s also a quick learner, so he can easily learn from the others or Francois.

5. Ruri. I just think that she could do anything she puts her mind to. Gives me the vibes. I think she’s the type to make something for the first time and it comes out great. And her baking is rather consistent. Learned quickly from everybody else.

6. Chrome. The baking is starting to get… questionable. He can figure it out, but it’ll come out burnt about half the time. Always burnt on his first attempt, then undercooked the second. Trial and error. He’s working on it.

7. Hyoga. Just… doesn’t care. Why is he baking? It doesn’t turn out BAD, but he kind of just walked away for a while and came back when he felt like it. Somehow, they usually turn out edible, but not great. Unless, somebody else takes them out the oven for him (Francois)

8. Ryusui. Burns the food. Never learned how to cook… despite having a butler so good at it. If he knows anything, it’s from them, but that’s about it. He usually leaves it up to them.

9. Senku. Everybody is convinced he put inedible rocks into the oven instead of food.

10.Kohaku. The kitchen is now in flames. The bread is burnt beyond redemption or recognition. She did something to aggressively or something? Got impatient? Idk.

I'll do it like this: if you've read all my works, then you're familiar with my core four ships (GK, OZ, CS, and RL), so I'll recommend two fics for each of those ships, plus two Gen fics because imo all Gen fics need more love. I'll limit myself to doing one fic per author because there are too many talented fic writers in this fandom to count, and I'll also try to make one fic for each ship more lh while the other can be angstier (since Idk which you'd prefer). Also disclaimer that I will only be including English fics in this list - I have dabbled in Google translate and thoroughly enjoyed some of the non-English fics I've read, but I do not feel comfortable recommending them as someone who cannot understand the original language. Hopefully, you'll find some stuff on here that you like!

Let's start with the GuKe (the inability to recommend Gwen's fics is absolutely killing me here):

no rules in breakable heaven by Maria Swift, Rated T, 12,000 words (you will need to be logged in to AO3 to read this one)

This was one of the first fics in the fandom I ever read and I absolutely loved it. It's meetcute college AU GuKe with a side of "and they were roommates" that's just very fun and entertaining to read. Definitely a great feel-good fic and one that I've returned to a handful of times when I need a pick-me-up. Super well-written, as well.

Phantom, Be Still In My Heart by seralove, Unrated (there is some sensitive content but nothing too graphic), 10,500 words

I was lucky enough to read this fic when it first came out and ohhhh my God did it make me feel things. This is canon (well, not quite) Worlds GuKe with a healthy portion of angst, and the descriptions are all very emotional. This fic kind of ruined me, in a good way, so just be prepared for that and definitely give it a read.

For the One2eus fics, I have the pleasure of recommending two of my favorite fic writers in the entire fandom:

lightning storm by sightstone (symmetrophobic), Rated T, 8,500 words

Reading this fic was part of what inspired me to start writing for this fandom in the first place. It's cute, it's sweet, it's absolutely hilarious - I laughed out loud multiple times while reading it. Definitely check out the other works by sightstone, too, especially her ongoing GuKe fae fic that currently has me brainrotting like crazy.

just look at me now (i'm lovesick) by screamtail, Rated E for smut, 3,500 words

Honestly, all of screamtail's works are iconic and recommendable, but for some reason, this one stuck with me a bit more than the others. I think it's probably the angst undertone and the brilliant descriptions that really made it stick in my mind. It explores the OZ dynamic from Zeus's perspective while offering some high-quality pwp content, so what's not to love?

Now if you're a CanMaker fan like me, you've probably already read all of the English fics in the tag (as you should, as have I), but I'll shoutout some of my personal favorites here:

we're magnetized (I admit it) by dustedpeach, Rated T, 15,000 words

I did not know how desperately I needed cat cafe AU Gen.G in my life until I read this fic. There could be a 100 volume series solely about this AU cafe and all of its shenanigans and I would eat up every chapter of it. In addition to the world building being truly visionary, the CanShow content is (naturally) super adorable and I will always love Canyon being a simp.

If only time were kinder by Chastelove, Rated T, 3,000 words

Speaking of fics that messed me up, Christ, my heart after reading this! Idk how I'm going to be okay. I might not. It's just... Apocalypse AU CanMaker. That's it. Read it. Please. I can't suffer alone anymore-

Since both of these recs are from AUs, if you're looking for more canon CanMaker (CanonMaker??), or if you're looking for something a bit spicier, I'd definitely recommend snow by chovying as well. It's another amazing and adorable fic, and the only reason that I didn't recommend it above is that it felt like a copout answer to push a fic that was gifted to me - like of course I love that fic! You should definitely read it and give it all the kudos in the world, though.

Finally (for the ship fics, at least), we have my beloved RuLehends. Much like CanMaker, true fans of this ship will have already read all of the English fics on AO3 for it, but I'll still take the opportunity to squeal about some of them:

told you so by Aurelion8(Monochrome01), Rated E for smut, 2,000 words

On its own, this is a short, sweet and smutty pwp fic, but I am once again encouraging you to read all of the fics by this writer because there are only three of them but they all go insanely hard - especially we're still here, but really 3/3 are bangers. The reason I specifically recommended told you so was that it's like... the closest RuLehends ever gets to not being angsty? Lmao, these two really just have angst and smut encoded into their dynamic. But seriously, you should read all three of Aurelion8's fics. They are hot and lovely and I am eagerly awaiting whenever they post next.

i feel it burning me (i feel it burning you) by speaktothemoon, Rated M for implied sexual content (imho it could prob be T), 12,500 words

Ughhh this fic is just so good. It does such an excellent job of capturing the complex and heartbreaking relationship that Siwoo and Jaehyuk share while diving into what happened behind closed doors in 2022. I may have cried while reading it. Tears of joy but also sorrow because wtf... these two really will be the death of me.

Last but certainly not least, we have a pair of Gen fics aka shipless fics that I cannot recommend enough! Honestly, this category was the hardest to pick two from by far, but here's what I have for you:

In which T1 accidentally summons the Unkillable Demon King by ginger_owl, Unrated (for violence purposes), 35,500 words and ongoing

Ginger is 100% another writer who you should just click the account name for and read everything on there - her Star Guardian AU, Welcome to Summoner's Rift, it's all brilliant beyond words. The reason I chose this fic specifically is it's the first one I read (also one of the first LoL RPF fics I ever read) and that makes me nostalgic for it. It's basically what it says on the tin - high school AU where ZOGK are students and they summon the demon Faker. The worldbuilding and characterizations in her fics are always a highlight, and I'd strongly recommend reading through her entire corpus!

they light candles in rome by keres (DeerGoBonk), Rated G, 9,000 words + an 18,000 word in-depth analysis in chapter 2 because legend???

Okay as someone who's a bit of a mythology nerd... this fic made me think for a very long time. It is gorgeous and tragic and definitely worth reading through multiple times. It will make you think, then if you read keres's own analysis in the following chapter it will make you think even more. It's indescribable, really, so just def go read it for yourself!

I've just realized that both of those recs are T1-centric (but honestly, aren't most fics in the fandom?) but so are all of the other Gen fics I wanted to recommend, so.... if you're looking for non-T1, non-romance-based fics, might I recommend Metro Lines and Their Prismatic Tears? :3

God, this is making me think that I should write more platonic fics... Like Master Yourself (Master Your Enemy) was supposed to be Gen, but then the CanShow leaked into it a bit too much... honestly though? I should change that back to being marked as Gen. Platonic Lucid & Canyon is still very much the central relationship there. I'm also proud of myself for writing How It Feels to Chew 5 Gum... 2024 KT Rolster, I will miss you dearly... You should also read the mouth of the wolf, the eyes of the lamb by this excellent author named gw- *Jhin 4th shot comes through the window*

One more thing: it didn't fit into any of my arbitrary above categories, but my favorite ongoing fic/the fic that I'm currently most excited to keep reading is definitely:

The Netflix adaptation of Alice in Borderlands is one of my favorite live action shows of all time, so needless to say I am eagerly seated for an LoLRPF AU/retelling of the story. The writing and narrative has been incredible so far, and I would love to recruit more readers to join me on the journey that is reading this fic!

Actually, I do completely understand how and why Gen Z came to feel the way they do about internet/fandom culture. I just think their solution to fixing the issue is misguided and more reactionary than solution-oriented based on personal trauma. The open internet and fandom culture itself was never built for small children to be able to safely wander around in. There were specific spaces for children like Neopets, Disney.com games, stuff like that. You wouldn’t have a little kid on social media. There was no social media. You’d have forums and myspace at best. Youtube was literally built because the creator wanted to show an uncensored nip slip. So the idea of protecting children was not a necessity because children were not online yet in the way adults or older teenagers were online.

What happened was technology progresses at and extremely fast rate. Faster than you can move around content on the internet or develop a different culture where kids are expected to just be around. And this unfortunately happened alongside child-friendly sites being eliminated. I’d say even with those sites tho, no one should have ever been giving two year olds ipads with unrestricted internet access. None of these kids should have been in the position to be able to come across fandom porn without their parents noticing. That’s crazy to me. My parents would check what sites I was visiting on our family computer. I think these kids were failed by ignorant parents and just...our ability to create technology faster than we know what to do with it. I think it’s horrifying we have a generation of kids who were all exposed to porn at a young age. I think a lot of things they say and do are because it fucked up their view of sex. And that’s not their fault, but I think a lot of young adults probably need to be in therapy about it and idk if they’re aware. Attacking art on the internet can’t heal your inner child. But I’m getting ahead of things.

I think we can all agree a lot of shit came to a head with MLP fandom. Those guys generated an unprecedented amount of porn, even for fandom. And this was also at a time when a lot of kids were now online and looking up their favorite shows. I don’t think there could be worse timing for anything. I don’t even want to say MLP fandom was all bad, a lot of them dedicated time to rounding up nsfw images that show up in google search and reporting it. But it was definitely a huge shitshow that I think molded a lot of people’s ideas of cartoon porn on the internet.

I still find the idea of a “kid’s fandom” oxymoronic because until recently a fandom for any cartoon would not be a “kid’s fandom”. It would be a fandom of adults and teens talking about a show that as aimed at kids, but no one would find that particularly relevant. Because the people present were not young kids. Animaniacs was actually one of the first big fandoms on the internet and it was big with college students. (Btw I feel like someone is going to purposefully start something because I keep referring to kids and teens separately. This is because there is obviously a huge difference developmentally in what content say a 7 year old and a 17 year old can handle. Whether or not a 17 year old should look at adult content, it’s not going to fuck them up the way it would a prepubescent child. I think that’s obvious. Trust and believe I’d look at a lot of shit I wasn’t supposed to as a teen and that was a purposeful choice on my part. I don’t have any particular regrets about this and I don’t feel any disgust towards sexual content, nor did I at the time. But if I was a little kid and it was being shoved in my face at random, I imagine I’d have to shit to work through. So for clarity, that’s what I mean.) I think fandom in the current year would look at something like patb fandom and be like “yea, a kid’s show for kids. It’s a kid fandom.” Maybe it would be currently, idk, but until now everyone here was in their 20′s and 30′s because it’s a show from the 90′s. So I do think there’s a culture gap in the understanding of what a fandom even looks like.

Ultimately tho, and this is my opinion based on living through all of it so far, I don’t think the problem is with the type of content people make. Frankly, having grown up in a time when every other fic was untagged noncon (because believe it or not, it’s a very common fetish and I promise that has not changed as much as people act shocked and outraged by it now. The same amount of people are still into it. They’re just in an environment where all their friends would come after them if they knew and they aren’t stupid. So they join in attacking others, but just know a lot of your friends do read it on the side, regardless of what they say publicly. 🤷‍♀️I see those kudos.) and I’ve never been as disgusted and genuinely distressed by that as I have with how real living people are treated in fandom today. It makes me sick to my stomach the things people do to each other. Fanfic and fanart have NEVER triggered me. This shit does. That CANNOT be the solution. It’s an impossible fight to begin with to eliminate everything you don’t like from fandom. And really things have come a long way with tagging believe it or not. I can avoid things like never before. So actually going out of your way to attack something you don’t NEED to look at just because it exists is just stupid to me. I’m not sure how purposefully looking at stuff you hate actually helps you with not seeing the things you hate. People obviously won’t agree with me, but I don’t think your art defines your morals. Art can be/mean anything, and I don’t personally want to live in a world that dictates “immoral” art as illegal because it’s obvious where that sort of thing can lead and it’s not pretty. (I do not necessarily agree with everything people make. I just think censorship is ultimately worse like...as far as real world ramifications go.) What you do to other people determines what kind of person you are. It’s weird this is even an unpopular opinion, but it is. You can treat others like absolute trash and still be seen as a good person so long as they “deserved it” for making The Wrong Kind Of Art. Which varies depending on which fandom you’re in anyway. And I really can’t get behind hurting people for reasons that are often so arbitrary to me.

I think the issue is just. The internet exists and kids are on it and there’s no place for them. And I really don’t know what the solution for that is. Because fandom aside, the internet is the internet. There are random porn ads on any given site, tiktok can lead you down an alt right rabbit hole in a matter of hours, twitter is....twitter lol. It’s a hostile environment for anyone these days tbh. I don’t think kids should be exposed to any of that. I think childhood is shrinking in our culture. Kids don’t have a tween phase anymore. It’s like you’re a kid and then you’re expected to look and act like a mini adult. It’s sad to me. I think that’s why a lot of people want to recapture some type of innocence and childhood. You were pushed out of it way too fast. There’s some state I think that was proposing children be banned from the internet until they’re 18. While that would be cool for me, I think that’s dangerous in a different way given how a lot of extreme alt right parents are starting to homeschool their kids. I think it’s more about putting a stopper on information than about protecting kids. And I think this would have a devastating effect on queer kids in particular. So idk. There has to be something in between we can do.

More than anything I wish we could all work together to try to fix this because I don’t think people WANT to see kids get hurt. We’re all on the same side at the end of the day. But I think the environment is too hostile to actually achieve anything useful atm. 🤷‍♀️I think that sucks. I’d love for fandom to be a fun and close-knit community again. It’s something that always meant a lot to me growing up and I think it’s sad people can no longer have what I had. But I don’t see that happening anytime soon.

the triumph of magic by miniequill (odainath) (harry/hermione ; <5k ; AU) After Ron abandons them, Harry and Hermione take on the challenge of finding and destroying the Horcruxes. HHr.

i often feel like i have this strange parasocial relationship with odainath (although we've never talked) because they have been in literally every fandom i have been in at some point or other (including the most niche ones) and they are an incredible writer. i was super stoked to find out they had HP fics as well, and of course you know that i'm a sucker for a good harry/hermione story. i found this one very intriguing - the writing is gorgeous as always, and i was very much vibing this.

perpendicular by akissinacrisis (it's tagged hinny but i'd say gen ; <5k ; AU) Tom props himself up on his elbow. ‘So, let me get this straight: you’re falling in love with a posh redhead from boarding school who doesn’t own a telephone.’ AU: Harry Potter, member of Stonewall High’s sixth form, meets a pretty redhead at a party. Harry/Ginny, rated Teen+, oneshot.

this is a very interesting squib!harry take unlike anything i've ever seen before. the writing in this was absolutely stellar - i laughed at times, but was also taken by the overall gorgeous heartbreak of this. it's funny, although i totally respect how the author ended it (and understand why they end it that way), it's one of those where i almost wish it could have gone on longer/explored the alternative ending. it would have been a very different (and probably much longer fic) but i would love to see someone write it.

orchards by @whinlatter (hinny ; <20k ; CC) The orchard is a wild, thousand-flower, crumpled-gate, fall-down-fence sort of place, where things grow that you’ve never asked for, that you’d never expect. The summer of ’96, the story of something flowery he thought he might have smelled at the Burrow. Canon-compliant, oneshot, summer between OotP and HBP. Non-linear narrative, flashbacks/flash-forwards to DH. Harry/Ginny.

if you gravitate anywhere close to the hinny fandom, you will know that everyone and their cousin has been recommending this fic since it came out - let me tell you: everyone and their cousin are right. it took me a while to get to it but this is one of the most beautiful hinny one-shots out there. the writing is stellar - i left a comment to whinlatter after i read it that went over the AO3 character-count limit and was completely unhinged, and i am not sorry. if you haven't already, go read this. please and thank you.

14. how do you write emotional scenes? Do you ever feel what the characters feel? Do you draw from personal experiences?

you'd love it, right? if i could give you a formula.

as european as i am (please don't ever give us compliments, we don't know how to deal), i also think it would be highly hypocritical of me to sit here and be like "ohmygod, idk, i'm so shocked you'd ask me that!' i've been writing for seventeen years and if there is one thing that has always been consistent in my comment section from the very beginning is the fact that i seem to be able to make people feel things. there are writers who are incredibly good with words. gorgeous, gorgeous prose that reads like poetry. there are writers who are good with descriptions, scenery so vivid you can almost touch it. there are yet others who are good at giving you a feel for a time period in your life, describing childhood or adolescence or moving out of home for the first time. what i am good at, is this. the rawness and the gripping emotion that makes you forget how to breathe. i know some of it is healing for some people, too.

i don't think there's a formula for this. it's even harder for me to break it down especially because it's not something i've ever had to work on - i've always had it. ask me how i work on descriptions (which are very much not my forte), and i'll much more concrete advice to give you.

Do you draw from personal experiences? no, not really. i mean, i'm sure i do on some subconscious level, but i very rarely am like "oh, i felt this at x moment in my life, let me channel that". i've never studied psychology either, or done much research on how people react to certain things. for me, it's a gut feeling. it's a raw, instinctive understanding of people, and the human experience as a species. i don't pretend to have any formal expertise on this. i follow my gut, that's it. and, if you ask me: Do you ever feel what the characters feel? no, but i do feel something.

when i write something that works (emotionally works) i get this sense of indescribable peace in me. and this is true for moments that carry very dramatic emotions (think chapter 8 of castles) but also happy moments, like the roadtrip in chapter 16. for me, as a writer, these are exactly the same, in terms of how i feel when i'm writing them. and how i feel is like: nothing in the world exists anymore. i have no job, no family, no friends, no boy trouble, no concerns, no nothing. you know how, in chapter 16, the narration says: "he smiles like no one has ever died"? - yeah, that.

hours of just me and the words on the page. it's hard to put into words without sounding cheesy but i feel this sense of calm alignment with the universe. i'm not one for drugs but i think it's probably what a high feels like. have you ever been able to just empty your head? where you're in complete control and the chaos of the world cannot touch you? that, too.

and, generally, if i feel that, i know i'm onto something. i know that whatever i'm writing is working. generally, in that "state", hours can go by and i won't realise it. i'm writing, writing, writing and suddenly it's like - 5AM the next day. if i don't, that's when i'm like "shit, something's not working," and i have to work and work and rewrite and rewrite until i find a solution. until i feel that. so, while there's no formula i follow, i do get that writing "high" that sends me into the right direction.

and, for the record, that "high" is the only reason i write. like, sure, comments and feedback and the community are amazing and idk if would write *as much* as i do without them. i also 100% seek attention and validation, but i think if there wasn't also this sense of peace in me that came with it, i would probably find community in a different way. but, you know, i'm a bit of a drug addict. i'm sure if someone told you there is one thing that will bring you more peace, joy and sense of accomplishment than anything else in your life and sure you have to work for it, a lot, but once you're done, it'll be the highest, high you've ever been on, you'd sign up, too.

to me, writing (and this happens particularly in those emotional scenes you are referring to), is the absence of fear. it's the absence of anxiety. it's the absence of depression. it's the absence of worry. it's just pure calm and happiness. it may not be all those things for you as a reader (especially if i'm writing something tense lol), but it is for me. i don't think what i feel as a writer and what you feel as a reader are related, but they're definitely linked. and, when i feel one, i know you will feel the other.

and that maybe people will understand and benefit from what i am trying to say.

ok so tags, tags r so confusing and idk why

ok so the tags do seem confusing but they’re actually pretty simple (i’m gonna talk abt this through the lens of searching for fics btw)

so when u click on a tag and click filter (which is normally how i look for fics) the filters are split into 3 sections

include, exclude, and more options. and if u look at them they have subsections, the subsections for include and exclude being the same, and i’ll explain what the subsections are below

so this is ratings. all of the filter tags thingys are sorted by how many fics there are tagged/rated like this in this tag, in this case i clicked on the Stranger Things fandom tag and that’s the results (don’t think i rlly need to explain what the ratings mean or anything). when including stuff u can only select one (obviously) but u can filter out multiple

next is the warnings, all fics r required to have at least one but u can add multiple. think these r all pretty self explanatory except underage which either means underage sex or underage SA (or possibly smthn more broad but i’m pretty sure it’s one of those, more certain that it’s underage sex in general) also no warnings and creator chose not to use warnings are 2 different things, if something is tagged creator chose not to use warnings then it could mean it has major character death or violence or whatever but the author didn’t wanna add a warning for some reason so be sure to check the tags.

next is categories, this is about the different kinds of relationships in it. for f/f, f/m, and m/m f stands for female and m stands for male so they’re about sapphic, straight, and achillean relationships respectively. gen means no romantic/sexual relationships and multi means there r multiple kinds of relationships (e.g a fic where one of the relationships in the fic is lesbian while another is straight). other i think is just for stuff that doesn’t rlly fit in any of the other categories, like for example if it was [character]/gn reader (put a pin in the / we’ll come back to it later)

up next is fandoms. now from here on all the things that show up in the filters aren’t the only options, they’re just the top 10. i don’t rlly have anything to say on this bit so i’ll just move on.

next is characters, if u want a character to be in the fic ur reading u can filter in their tags. don’t rlly know what else to say on this other than again these r only the top 10 and i’ll talk abt a way u can search for others in a minute.

next, relationships. if u want/don’t want a certain relationship to be in the fic u can filter them here. also remember how i told u to put a pin in that /? well yeah this is very important to remember: a / between 2 characters is a romantic or sexual relationship and an & is a platonic/familial/etc. relationship. srsly u don’t wanna mix them up.

and last in the include/exclude section is additional tags. this is for just everything that would be tagged that isn’t any of the other stuff. like any AUs, if it’s got smut/angst/fluff/whatever, any extra warnings that weren’t in the big warnings section (e.g a suicide attempt or homophobic language), if it’s a smut the specifics about what kinda stuff they’re doing, etc.

but we aren’t completely finished in this section because we still have:

completion status. completion status is (obviously) about whether a fic is complete or not. if a fic’s chapter count is like this: 7/7 it’s complete, if it’s like this: 7/16 or 7/? it’s not, and the filtering is pretty self explanatory.

word count. if u want to read something idk shorter with a quicker payoff or longer with more content or whatever reason u can filter the word count. how it works is for example if u put 7000 in the “from” area and 20,000 in the “to” area all the fics would have 7000-20,000 words.

date updated. if u don’t wanna read fics from before/after a certain date u can put the date into this and filter it (e.g i recently watches itsv and wanted to read abt my boy Miles but haven’t yet watched atsv so i put atsv’s release date into the “to” section so none of the fics would have spoilers).

and finally there’s this thing which i honestly have no idea how to use so yk.

there’s also a way to filter only one language in incase u don’t wanna be scrolling and find a rlly good fic only to find out it’s another russian fic or whatever and a way to change what order fics come in (latest updated first, latest posted, most kudos, etc.)

I truly think that some gen z kids my age in particular were just built different (An essay on the way young people around the ages of 16-19 consumed digital media from an extremely tired person in that age-range who wanted to be asleep like 3 hours ago)

Note before my first couple paragraphs that I am not condoning the types of parents who take their 9 year old to see deadpool or even their 5 year old to see the barbie movie, parents should be responsible and look at commonsense media or something similar and not bring their kids to see things they don't understand/will fuck them up

But like also my brother is at the age that I was when I watched a full ddlc playthrough as it was releasing and I came away from that like "cool that was an interesting and scary game" but I think my brother would not be able to handle it, he would have nightmares

Idk maybe he's just a wimp but I genuinely believe that the majority of gen alpha would not handle the type of content my age-group was able to consume on the internet, which is probably a good thing.

Again, parents not monitoring what media their children consume is BAD. There are scientific studies on this topic. Not all pg-13s are created equal, same with any film rating. I feel fairly lucky that I didn't encounter anything too wild when I was younger, just some horror games and buzzfeed unsolved, I didn't even watch a rated R film until sophomore year of high-school when I took a film-studies course

But yeah, letting young children watch films and YouTube videos not meant for them is not great, most people born around the same time as me were just in the golden age of not being iPad kids but also learning and adapting to technology super fast at a young age and usually having personal internet access at (based on what conversations I've had with friends) the ages 7-10. Most of us weren't chronically online until the pandemic, but we did often have an insane amount of freedom on the internet either because of boomer parents or (in my case) extremely trusting ones, whether that was trust in the internet user or the quality of YouTube children's content or god forbid the YouTube kids app.

This utter freedom in our formative years led to a lot of kids finding things not originally intended for them. I refuse to believe that Five Nights at Freddy's was originally intended to be for children with the whole serial killer thing, but it got into our grubby elementary-schooler hands and we were obsessed. DDLC was DEFINITELY not meant for kids but I watched a full playthrough of that as a wee 10-year-old who had yet to watch a PG-13 film my mom hadn't watched before me. And that's all just games. True crime documentaries, controversies, "kids" content, and challenges that could and did lead to physical harm were all at our fingertips.

The other thing is that most of us did grow up on cable, dvds, cds, and even vcr in some cases. We grew up as technology was absolutely exploding (hell, I was born the same year the iPhone was released). We were forced to play outside and with toys despite also finding an online presence. Technology and educational online games wormed their way into the school curriculum. As a first grader we would learn our spelling skills through a browser game but I'd go home and my choices were PBS kids or the backyard. Obviously technology continued to improve at this extremely accelerated rate, but I, and every one of my peers I've discussed this with, had several years where the most we'd interact with new-fangled technology was Xfinity on Demand or the Wii (both staples of my childhood).

I do think that Covid was the major cause for most of my age group being extremely online?? Prior to that (in middle school) I'd watch vines with friends while doing try not to laugh challenges, listen to music, pull up a minecraft let's play after doing my homework, and maybe play a game on the Xbox on the weekend. During covid, though, I feel as though that's when most of us started to be more online. Hell, my discord account was made in 2019 but sat dead until 2020 and is now my main form of communication. We all started to use out devices more and engaged with online content to a much higher degree. I'm sure all of our logged steam hours increased tenfold, I know mine did. Such an insane life event, a genuinely traumatic period for most of us, and probably the reason why we're so chronically online. Keep in mind we were all tweens when this hit, middle-schoolers or freshmen, and now we're either adults or will be next year. It was a wild time to be alive and definitely had a MASSIVE effect on how this age group consumes media

Gen alpha, by the most common definition, begins high-school this year (or month for most people). This is absolutely insane all things considered, but let's compare their consumption of media to gen z. First, there are still the parents who do not give a shit and take their tiny child to see deadpool but since they are the minority I won't mention them

Next, gen alpha, for the most part, was put on devices at a young age to keep them quiet. One story I know with my stepbrother is that he one time thought his grandmother's TV was broken because it started playing a "grown-up show". It was an ad. It was cable TV. If course not every kid is like this, but we need to understand that for the younger of this group (which is Who I'm referring to) maybe don't even remember the start of covid. Their parents have been trying to distract them to get their own work done for some of their most formative years. That leads to tiny children who literally come up to my waist while standing at full height knowing more about celebrity drama than I do and also pointing at popular characters in the horror or adult animation genres and saying "I know that guy". Yes I do believe that they often have less access to this kind of thing than me or my friends did when we were younger, and often these "horror games" are directed at a younger audience than they used to be. Poppy Playtime and Security Breach hardly compare to seeing Yuri literally stab herself to death and watching her corpse slowly lose life over two days. Parents have simply wisend up to what kind of stuff is on the internet, and if it isn't marketed towards children in real-life stores or isn't approved by other parents, it can simply be filtered out. Honestly I see a lot of kids who only have access to the kids tabs of large streaming services, definitely an improvement from the world of YouTube. Honestly this stuff (ie. Internet trends, slang, quotable stuff, etc) just sort of spreads to a few kids through the actual source material and to every other kid in school my word of mouth

I don't know guys, I just think that the way technology has had an affect on my life versus the lives of some young children is interesting but I've been writing this on my phone for over an hour when I was planning on checking tumblr and go to sleep this was literally just supposed to be "I don't think my brother could handle ddlc" and nothing else but here I am. Maybe I'll write a real thing on this later and actually interview my friends. Anyways I hear something crawling in my walls and it's probably a mouse lmao I'm gonna go tf to sleep

Star stable is a good video game just ignore how hard I grit my teeth and fight every bone in my body telling me to hate on it bc it’s like, Thee Game for me. No other game js as Star Stable as Star Stable, no other game has taken so much money from my mother because I am a witless fool and for some reason the prices of tack/horses/clothes is rising just like the real life inflation rate so . Idk. I wish there was dynamic heights for characters so Quinn could be 6’6 like she’s supposed to be. And I also want retrofitted tack. And maybe they should like, go back to earlier gen 3 models (American Quarter Horse specifically becuase that’s my favorite model in the game haha) and give them a bit of a spa treatment, like making their manes 3D objects instead of like, paper thin mane textures (specifically the braided hair style, once again bc my aqh has his mane braided and Dirk deserves to look cool) . The Selle Français or whatever they’re called are cool as hell btw easily one of my favorite horses I got a Blu Spy one and a Red Spy one and they’re awesome . The galloping animation is a lil wack but I honestly don’t care bc they’re just such pretty horses and Fast as Fuck (faster than Dirk, at least, and it makes me sad bc Dirk is my favorite horse but I can’t reliably take him on races or champs bc he’s held back so hard by his tack (since a lot of the better tack is more recent and NOT RETROFITTED to him GRAAAHHHGG pls please Pleek sso please . ) at least they’re taking another shot at the Friesian, I really hope it’s what the community wants (I myself have a gen 3 Friesian already but I don’t ride him bc, well, his animations make me wanna kill myself or smth idk). Also I wish that selling a horse netted you star coins, it gives more incentive to buy the newer horses and phase out older ones that maybe players regret buying (I know I have some horses that haunt me bc I bought them for no reason and I don’t want them anymore but keep them around bc selling them is like, the biggest rip off imaginable). Idk. Star Stable is my favorite game. I wish it was better. I like the newer look that a lot of the locations have gotten but also…….. yeah hollow woods is ugly. Steve’s farm is ugly. And also no farm has that many trees, what the fuck, horses are so unbelievably fragile everything has the possibility to kill them. Probably because of the nostalgia. And hollow woods is just…… why are there so many water features.
