It looks docile and elegant, even for a shelter cat, not making a sound. When Lan Zhan enters the room, there is an older man already there, back to the door and wearing the weird semi-scrub uniform the shelter workers sport. “I’m sorry, old girl,” says the worker, a resigned sort of sadness in his tone as he fiddles with a cage lock, “I’m afraid your stay is over.” “I’ll take her!” blurts Lan Zhan. The worker starts and drops his keys in shock. “Please,” he adds. “Y-yes,” the other man stutters, fumbling to pick his keys back up. “She’s not a kitten though,” he warns. As the cage is unlocked, this much and more becomes apparent. The cat cowers in the back corner, fixing the worker with one – just one – large, fearful eye. A deep pink scratch extends over its nose and bisects the sewn-shut remnants of its second eye. Its fur is black, like his last kitten. When the worker steps back to let Lan Zhan have a closer look, the cat creeps forward, pressed close to the perimeter of the cage, to sniff at this new stranger that has come to gawk. It stares at Lan Zhan. Lan Zhan stares back. They come to an agreement. The cat – Bichen, he has decided – purrs as he picks her up and puts her in her carrier. She purrs on the drive home, when he sticks his fingers through the carrier’s grid door, his uncle’s voice bitching in his head about keeping both hands on the wheel. She purrs when he explains to her gently that this is her home, that she must stay indoors for safety, that he keeps her here because he loves her and does not want her hurt. “You are good,” he says when she purrs next to him in bed. “You are a kitten, no matter what they say. You are good.”

I think a continuation from Shuck is in order. From Tim's POV: Tim will fight with tooth and nail to keep sire-protector-warmth-love close. Nothing in existence could convince him of letting the Grim go.

Or the one where Tim's abrupt imprinting on Jason causes some codependency issues, especially since he's the only bond he's ever had.

THE POPPY WAR, by R. F. Kuang

This book was…horrific.

But it was beautiful at the same time. Not only does is play upon the haunting ideas of grief and revenge and anger and how that comes out in war torn countries, it does it with a stunning story inspired by Chinese history/mythology.

The characters are multi layered and there isn’t anyone who is just “good” or “evil”. Everyone has a skeleton in the closet, something they must avenge, and everyone has multiple faults, which makes this collection of characters all the more interesting.

The action is brutal, barbaric and there are so many triggers to keep in mind, and this story is not for the faint of heart. It’s going to punch you in the face, stab you in the stomach and then pour salt on your wounds all the while bringing you to tears because of the barbaric nature of war.

Stunning, inhumane and spirit crushing, this book is a masterpiece.

Next I’d like to recommend my wonderful friend @thechaoticfanartist, whose masterpost is here. They specialize in writing their OC Grim Kennet, Obi-Wan Kenobi, Anakin Skywalker, and Ahsoka Tano. Their main WIP is The Clone Wars Gets a New Victim, in which a girl from Earth is transported into the Star Wars universe and tries to prevent Order 66 from happening.

OOOOOOOH I've always thought dropping a "this universe" human into the Star Wars universe presents an interesting set of problems and possibilities, and this fic absolutely seems like it will tackle several of those!! Also, HELL YEAH LESBIAN AHSOKA!! And this promises just PAIN at the thought of stopping Order 66, because even if Grim manages it, at what cost (because no one can ever be happy in Star Wars). I'm self promoting myself here, but I want to show off my fic The Clone Wars Gets A New Victim now that it's finally completed. It took me exactly 2 years to write. It follows my Star Wars OC who's from our universe but ends up in The Clone Wars, she ends up becoming Obi-Wan's new Padawan and makes it her goal to stop Order 66 from taking place. It's a total of 40 chapters + an epilogue with a sequel currently in progress.

CONGRATULATIONS ON FINISHING THIS FIC! I know you've been working on it for a good long while, and almost 172k words and 41 chapters? I am throwing flowers at you. And the concept? I LOVE IT. Because I think Grim is such a unique character on her own, but also, so relatable in so many ways. Who amongst us wouldn't try to stop Order 66 if we got chucked into the Star Wars universe? Thanks so much for sharing this and GOOD LUCK WITH THE SEQUEL!!!

The Next Generation

The Warrior Bards novels are to the Blackthorn and Grim trilogy as Star Trek: TNG is to Star Trek TOS. This is literally the next generation in this world, and it's exploring the lives of Blackthorn and Grim's children, both bioloigcal and adopted. What is absolutely wild to me is that where Blackthorn and Grim felt like more traditional, older-style historical fantasy (think like, 1980s Tamora Pierce or Mercedes Lackey) despite being published from 2014 to 2016, the Warrior Bard books feel very modern and very much what I would expect for historical fantasy published from 2019 to 2021. And yet despite the style changes, both series still manage to sound like Juliet Marillier. Let's talk Warrior Bards.

The Harp of Kings introduces us to Swan Island, a training ground for freelance spy/mercenaries, and main characters Liobhan, Brocc, and Dau. Brocc and Liobhan are Blackthorn and Grimm's children, and they are in training on Swan Island. This book follows them on what is technically a training mission, but it's a very, very live mission. You can't crown a king without a magic harp, after all. Dau and Liobhan are set up for their rivals to lovers arc throughout the trilogy, and Brocc is very, very clearly set up to end up on an intertwined but related path to his sister--there are fae involved.

A Dance with Fate has been mentioned on this blog before, in the very first post. It has a very complicated relationship with disability and the magical cure trope, which I won't go into too much depth here; the TLDR is that on principle, I hate the magical cure trope (seriously, disability is not a life-ender. You can live and live well with a disability, it does not HAVE to be cured), but this book does some interesting work with the grief that can come with acquiring a disability and the absolute fuckery that acquiring a disability can throw your relationships (of all kinds, but especially family ones) into. The previous book wasn't not character driven, but this book is CHARACTER DRIVEN, and I love that about it. It makes the stakes higher and the actiony, plot-y sequences weightier.

This book also really divides its time between Dau and Liobhan and Brocc, who is off in a Fae stronghold and very much on his own romantic journey that has some tragic-feeling tendrils woven through. Brocc is not my favorite part of this trilogy, but he is central to it in a way that, while reading, I was never mad about spending some time with him, especially because while he is geographically separate from Dau and Liobhan, they're deeply connected in terms of in-world geopolitics and plot. It's just beautifully balanced.

A Song of Flight takes all the threads that have been worked through the first two books and opens with a kidnapped prince, who's bodyguard is Brocc and Liobhan's elder brother, Galen. Swan Island turns out to find the prince, and Dau, Brocc, Liobhan, and Galen have to save both the magical and mundane worlds.

This trilogy is excellent, and does not require reading the Blackthorn and Grimm books before reading, and if you don't discover Juliet Marillier through the Wildwood books, I would actually recommend starting with this trilogy (unless you are a massive classical fantasy fan, then Blackthorn and Grimm might be a better place to start; your mileage may vary).
