A long yap session about the Maelstrom in the Danger gal Dossier

Ok finals are finally over and I have a chance to sit down and write this all out, I’ll go over the first page of Maelstrom info that details: Base of operations, recent history, resources, goals, and a little intro prepared Linda “Overpass” Lucastra who is undercover at the Totentanz… oh to run around undercover at the Totentanz… don’t get caught!

In the nice little intro we get, “Maelstrom clawed their way through the 4th Corporate war and reconstruction much as night city did: scarred, battered, but fiercely alive.” The DgD takes place in cyberpunk red, which takes place in 2045. Most of the city is recovering from the Arasaka tower nuke. Funny enough, before the nuke Maelstrom was considered a middle grade booster gang, but here it states that this is when they start to get major power and become a big deal with their drug and cybernetic trade. Something that I find pretty interesting, is how they manage to bounce back considering what happens to their base. But before I cover that, one of the reasons that they pull forward so well is due to the fact that they are one of leading gangs that is salvaging valuable gear from the hot zone, “Maelstrom also leads the other gangs in salvaging valuable gear from the hot zone using hoards of scavvers willing to get cancer for a shot at a membership and some shiny metal.” I suppose you do what you must do to survive in night city, even if it means possibly getting radiation poisoning in order to join one of scarier gangs in night city.

Now, base of operations… in 2023 they lost their entire territory in the arasaka nuke… I’m not joking, its stated in the book and is one of the reasons I’m so shocked that maelstrom manages to become such a bigger threat in 2045-2077. “In 2023, Maelstrom lost their entire territory to the Araska Tower nuke. The neighborhood around the abandoned department store they called home survived the blast, but raging fire swept through the area and brought it all down. Totentanz…(which the maelstrommers called their second home) was also badly damaged.” Completely insane and awesome to me that these guys got their shit rocked and managed to bounce back. They stabilized the Totentanz and re-opened the bar, and moved their base of operations to the middle floors of the hotel. Makes me wonder if some of the maelstroms are allowed to crash at the Totentanz as a kind of home. Like if they don’t have apartments or homes they can stay there, or perhaps have to stay there? The coolest bit of lore here that I’m pretty sure didn’t make it into 2077 is that in the ballroom of the Totentanz there is burned out chrome from fallen maelstrom members that cover the wall INCLUDING A MUMMIFIED CORPSE OF THEIR FORMER LEADER HAMMER WHO WAS KILLED IN THE NUKE! Insane, I love it. The book also states that it’s considered a mark of honor among members to have old chrome that has visible nuke scars. Details that can be used when drawing/making maelstrom ocs me thinks!

Moving onto recent history (as of 2045 of course) the Dgd states that maelstrom started and continues to build itself on castoff and survivors of other gangs. I honestly think this might still be true in 2077, some of the gang members can be seen wearing belt buckles of other gangs. My brain is a bit foggy right now as I’m writing this but I believe they will snatch members of other gangs and convert them for fun too. In this section it also states that it was an old condo that shielded the maelstroms old headquarters from the worst of the nuke. However, most of the cybered up members (ones that were heavily chromed) died in a frenzy of extreme violence frenzy that happened after the explosion. Survivors claim that it was EMP induced. This frenzy happened between gangs and possibly within maelstrom itself? “ the survivors fought on, absorbing Remnants of other high chrome gangs during the recovery.” It was Warlock, the gangs current leader who started to gather maelstroms best members and shape it into a business.

Speaking of business, during this time Maelstrom controls a drug trafficking network and also move reclaimed weapons and tech. They take wannabe (and disposable) gangsters into the hot zone to scavage for valuable equipment of all kinds, but they really want cyberware. They have deals with rippers all across the city. I find this really interesting, because in 2077, I’d say the ones shipping cyberware parts to shady rippers are mostly scavengers, (the gang). However, I do think in 2077 Maelstrom still has a bunch of cyberware lying around that they might sell? But my bets is that they keep it to over chip people for fun, (see metal monk mission). The final part in resources mentions the Totentanz, and that the headquarters and garage are in the same building.

Finally we have their goals, dgd states “Maelstroms rank and file members work the gangs drug or cyberware trade to advance and earn drinking money or credit with allied ripperdocs.” Warlock however, the gangs current leader, has longer term goals to get a permanent home for the Totentanz and the gang. (My goofy ass ‘awwwwwing’ at this) between the drive of the gangs leader and the trade network, it makes since that they had the strength to pull through and stick around. Maelstrom, being a gang and all, also enjoys a, and I quote “‘Chrome, Smash, Dance, and Bash’” attitude. Oh our little party freaks :)

The final detail here is something I think might be missed or never brought up in 2077. The dgd mentions the Inquisitors and that if any Maelstrom members come across them, they will set aside all other business to curb stomp them. Inquisitors are very anti cyberware and consider it blasphemous. The inquisitors were more of a cult than a gang and it goes without saying that maelstroms hate them. There is about 20 years of bad blood between them.

And that’s all for the first page that holds the intro of the maelstrom gang in the Danger gal Dossier. I will yap about the maelstrom members in this book and interesting details about them, but for now I’ll leave it here cause it’s sooooo late and this was a lot to type out, see you next time chooms!

Hi! How are you? I'm rewatching CM and like the scene in 1x14, (JJ: my friends call me JJ, UNSUB: Welcome JJ, JJ: you're not my friend, you can call me Jennifer) and I get what she's attempting to accomplish here, she's trying to get the unsub (killed and raped young blond women) to see that he's not that type of intimate with her, but it comes off clunky and arrogant. She's rushing the interaction. What would have been better would be to introduce herself as Jennifer and then have Hotch call her JJ, and then if the Unsub called her JJ to say that. It comes off as less clunky and more natural, as well as establishing a base line, like Hotch is allowed to call her that and he isn't. But this the early 2000s and we need #girlpower. I just wanted to vent because that scene bothers me alot.

i completely agree for exactly this reason!! i can see what they were trying to do, but it really just… doesnt make sense. maybe if hotch had called her jj, then when jacob (that was the unsubs name, right?) tries to call her that she can say the “only my friends call me jj” line, but i see how that kinda takes away her agency.

idk. considering it’s one of my favorite cm episodes of all time, there’s actually a lot i can’t stand about it. the surface-level feminism jj line. the dumbass poker scene. the overdone suspense at the end. i loved sarah jean and gideon, but there’s a lot about the episode to forgive to get to the good stuff

he blinks. looks down. his daughter, all of five years old, stares up at him, hands on her hips, expression dead serious. "no?" he repeats, incredulous. "no what?"

she lifts a tiny finger. "no roses."

"the hell do you mean, no roses?"

"bad word!" she yells.

he sighs. "fine, fine—heck do you mean, no roses?"

she frowns, tapping her chin. "mama already gets roses. mama should get something cool." sukuna squints at her. "…like?"

his daughter suddenly beams. "LEGO!"

pause.

"…you want me to get your mom a lego set for her birthday?"

she nods enthusiastically.

sukuna, a grown-ass man, has never been stared down by someone so tiny and felt so defeated. "…fine," he mutters, rubbing his temples. "lego it is."

so that’s how he finds himself sitting at the dining table with his daughter at 11 pm the night before your birthday, helping her put together a lego flower bouquet.

"alright, gimme the little green stem—"

"papa, no! that not where it go!"

sukuna looks at her. then at the piece in his hand. then at the instruction booklet.

"…yeah, it is."

"no, it go here!" she insists, slapping his hand away and shoving the piece in the completely wrong spot. he stares at it. he stares at her.

"that’s not where it goes."

"yes it is," she says confidently.

"no, it fucking isn’t—"

"BAD WORD!"

he groans. "—no, it freaking isn’t!"

she glares at him.

he glares back.

…then sighs.

"fine," he mutters, leaning back. "you’re the boss."

"yes," she nods. "i am."

he exhales, watching as she enthusiastically shoves pieces together. she suddenly pauses.

"papa."

"what?"

"we add angel and labubu."

"why?"

"protection."

he stares at her. then, without a word, he gets up, goes to her hoard of sonny angels and labubus, and hands her two of them. she grins, placing them carefully on either side of the bouquet. "perfect," she declares.

when you come home, exhausted from work, you’re immediately ambushed by your daughter.

"MAMA!"

"happy birthday," sukuna calls lazily from the couch, arms crossed behind his head. before you can respond, your daughter shoves the lego bouquet into your hands, bouncing excitedly.

"LOOK!"

you blink, taking it in. a full lego flower bouquet, colorful, adorable, and—

"…is that a sonny angel and labubu?"

"yes!" she nods aggressively. "they keep it safe!" you laugh, heart swelling, before crouching down and pressing a kiss to her forehead. "baby, this is amazing," you grin. "thank you!"

"papa helped!" she says, beaming. you look up at sukuna, amused. "you built legos?" he grunts. "against my will."

your daughter gasps dramatically. "papa! you like it!"

"…i tolerated it," he mutters.

"you LOVE it!"

"alright, chill out," he grumbles, ruffling her hair.

you shake your head, placing the bouquet on the table. "best gift ever," you say sincerely, smiling at them both. sukuna watches you. then, quietly, he smirks. "yeah," he mutters. "best gift ever."

The promise to go full time has been dangled over my head since I started working here. I was supposed to go full time next month. Then I find out I was actually almost fired at the start of the year because "there's no budget for me" but my manager just fought oh so hard to keep me and now I can't go full time until April or May. Like, where's all the money I'm supposedly saving the company by cutting down the driver's over time? This is a massive company that seems to have to money to be doing all this "team building" shit but I get the shit end of the stick because I'm just so unimportant.

Do I make mistakes? Of course I do. I went from food service to this shit, nobody explains anything until I mess up then they say something. I wake up at 2 in the fucking morning to bust my ass for these people. Not to mention picking up the literal shit from my bosses puppy every fucking morning. And he just keeps piling more and more onto me so he doesn't have to fucking do it. I started this job with the promise of full time and I'm getting fucking tired of it being dangled in front of me. I will be starting the job search for something else if this shit gets even a miniscule bit more annoying or shit. I'm so fucking tired of this.

If I'm saving the company so much money why did we get fucking WINE as a "bonus". Call me fucking greedy but I'd rather have money. Not fucking wine.

AND NOT TO FUCKING MENTION THEYRE DOING ILLEGAL SHIT. In my state, businesses aren't allowed to have someone working by themselves, especially in warehouse jobs and similar because of the chances for severe injury. I'm literally all by myself except for maybe 30 minutes when the drivers are there. Is it nice not having to talk to anyone and being able to just do my own thing? Absolutely. But I've gotten hurt several times that if I hadn't moved just perfectly I would've been permanently disabled and unable to work.

IDWTBAMG CHARACTER FUN FACTS

Well, some fun facts and mostly lore or character relationship stuff. Under the cut!

AIKA

Aika became the next Star Guardian at age 13. She’s 15 now

Aika’s want to help people and relentless positivity were part of the reason she was chosen to be the Star Guardian: Guardian of the Stars in the first place. While her love for the job has fizzled out, this aspect of her character still a core part of her.

She’s very kind and gentle person but that kinda goes out the window when magical duties are brought into the equation

Her and Hoshi care about one another but their relationship is currently a bit tense. They’re usually pretty quick to make jabs at one another

She struggled to get used to the platform shoes in her magical girl outfit

She LOVES food. And her eyes are usually way too big for her stomach leading to many a food coma

Aika and her teammates worked in secret for the most part, not really being allowed to “exist in the real world”. Because of this, with the free time she had, Aika would read a lot (she’s actually very book smart)

Aika loves extreme sports and is an adrenaline junky. However, rollercoasters freak her out for some reason

Aika drags Zira into lots of new eperiences. Zira usually ends up appreciating the experiences after the fact 

Aika’s a morning person

ZIRA

Zira is smart but doesn’t apply herself in school

They have a lot of artistic interests, particularly art, music and fashion

She likes the idea of writing fanfiction in theory but writing’s sooooo much work. Any ideas she has just kinda live in her head, causing her to zone out and daydream a ton

While shy for the most part, Zira can be very blunt and isn’t necessarily a pushover

Prior to Aika, she didn’t have a lot (any) friends at school but she’s mostly content doing her own thing

They’d hang out in Miss’ classroom a lot, either to show her Moon Sailor stuff against her will or just to have lunch

Zira loves playing video games and especially loves visual novels

Zira develops a crush on Aika pretty quickly. Aika’s kindness, authenticity and bravery is inspiring to Zira. Also Aika’s the only other person her age to really give her the time of day. And also she thinks Aika’s pretty

She thinks Hoshi’s really cool and since Aika doesn’t particularly enjoy talking about her job, Zira usually goes to Hoshi for magical girl questions. Initially Hoshi doesn’t trust Zira with that information but is really flattered to have someone who looks up to them and is interested in everything they have to say. So they indulge when appropriate.

Zira’s a night owl

HOSHI

Hoshi saved Aika when she was really young and has kept her safe ever since

Hoshi and Aika started off kind of like siblings but Hoshi then became her boss, making their relationship a bit strained and more complicated

Their role as a magical mascot managerial in nature. They make Aika and her team do their jobs, follow protocol, teach them how to use their powers, keep up morale, do timecards, etc.

While Hoshi oversees this team, their responsibility is primarily to the Star Guardian

Hoshi, much like Aika, used to be really chipper and a bit more goofy but Aika’s kinda worn them down overtime

Hoshi’s not a fan of Earth, but in an effort to better understand Aika’s feelings, tries out being a human and doing Earth activities

Hoshi takes a while to get used to their human form. They’re really clumsy in it

They have a hard time making hands for their human form. Their hands are slightly different every time but equally terrifying. They eventually get better at making them though.

Hoshi doesn't use their human form too much. Most people just assume their Aika's weird pet bird

Hoshi doesn't need to eat but discovers they enjoy the act of eating

ECLIPSE

Eclipse is one of the few humans that know that Aika and the other magical girls exist

He met Aika pretty early on in her magical girl career and he was immediately enamored with her

Since finding about magical girls, he’s obsessively tried keeping track of them, leading him to start acting out in order to get their attention. They only really care because he knows their secret and they play along

He and Devoid made his current outfit together. DeVoid wanted to make it black but Eclipse was set on making it very bright and showy

Eclipse currently resides with DeVoid. He gets on her nerves sometimes but they both do care about each other

Eclipse is a pretty good cook 

Eclipse isn’t particularly hateful but he’s really got beef with Zira for some reason

It’s hard to tell if Eclipse is really in love with Aika or if he just loves the concept of their nonexistent relationship

Eclipse has a lovely singing voice

His real name is Elio

LADY DeVOID

DeVoid was banished to space by a Star Guardian. For a LONG time she lived (unconsciously) as a sort of celestial being that would spit out monsters that the Star Guardians for many generations would have to face. While not ideal it was better than fighting DeVoid before she got to full power.

DeVoid finally wakes up in the present timeline, with no memories other than being banished by a Star Guardian and wanting revenge and knowing that she’s supposed to be able to create monsters. Unfortunately for her, she doesn’t remember how to use her powers. She doesn’t even remember her name, so she came up with “Lady DeVoid”

DeVoid loves human reality TV. Specifically competition shows. She loves how petty and evil people become

Reality TV is where most of her knowledge of humans comes from

Though DeVoid is pretty stoic, her ears are very expressive

DeVoid taught Eclipse how to do his makeup

She really likes Eclipse’s cooking

When she’s out and about she’s usually wearing sunglasses because it’s simply too bright for her

DeVoid does have to work a normal job in the human world and simply goes by “Dee”

People rarely question her appearance (because that’s just rude). But when people do ask what’s up with her horns she just says “it’s a condition” and that’s usually enough for people to just end the convo there.

MISS

Miss loves her job more than anything. She’s a very accomplished teacher and takes a lot of time to make sure all of her students succeed

Miss cares about Zira a lot. Always staying in her classroom just in case Zira wants to stop by for lunch, giving her advice or giving her extra tutoring as needed 

Because of Zira, Miss has become a closet Moon Sailor fan

Though Aika’s just started attending school, she and Miss have bonded quite a bit. Aika’s positive disposition and cheeriness bring Miss a lot of joy

Miss keeps her personal life (not that she really has one) out of work but finds herself opening up a little more than she’d like to Aika and Zira

Miss used to get really antsy during summer breaks, leading her to start teaching summer school to fill the time

Her workaholic nature was the reason for her and her ex-wife’s divorce

Miss has gone on one date since her divorce. The idea of having starting over is exhausting to her so she’s mostly okay just being single

Miss doesn’t really like coffee but she drinks a lot of it out of necessity

Miss has a ton of tattoos
