the old barbie movie soundtracks genuinely do not get enough acclaim. Arnie Roth is a fucking genius and we don't talk about it nearly enough for my liking.

they don't see it, because it is around them like air. to them, it would have to be through movies, through magazines. they think it happens outside of life, like it must be selected to be interacted with.
but you discovered in the fifth grade that you couldn't wear shirts with words on them, it was an excuse for someone to look at your chest. you were catcalled before you were in middle school. sometimes you look at that memory and deny it - surely that can't be right, you were young. but you were in a skirt, so maybe that was a natural byproduct. it was a skirt from that place "justice by limited too" - a store literally for kids. it was popular around then. you wore that skirt twice and then never again.
you can't wear headphones, because what if a man wants to talk to you? there's a guy on the internet who complains that women shut themselves off from being approached. at night, you often keep the headphones positioned but with the sound off, just in case you need to hear something behind you.
you learned at 12 that you can't make eye contact, don't acknowledge the aggression. just walk faster and hope he picks on somebody else. don't wear your hair like that. do not park next to that kind of car, park an entire cityblock away if you must.
you can't go to the museum, you're sitting and tying your shoe when he approaches you and mentions that nobody understands art anymore. that in the whole world, it's just you-two. you have no recourse for eating a meal (it's rabbit food if it's salad, and someone will roll their eyes, eat a sandwich. it's pick-me behavior if it's a burger, we get it you're a cool girl). if you like mushrooms you are cottagecore, which is cheesy. if you like video games you're an egirl (similar to a pick-me). boys do not get categories, but if you point out the categories are sexist, you are told okay but these girls really exist.
it is somehow developing, a little undercurrent that you've been uncomfortable with. the nickname "karen" went from being "a white woman that uses her whiteness as a weapon, particularly against people of color," to now mean "any woman raising her voice or being even a little upset." the reappropriation of a term used specifically to call out white women for their racism has set your skin on edge. now it is just another version of "bitch," one that can be said on television. recently you saw a woman get called a karen because a drunk driver sideswiped her, and she screamed when it happened. the comments on the dashcam video all say "why do women always scream about everything." "when has the world ever been bettered by women screaming." "this fucking karen. she deserved to get hit."
in the sitcom, it's a joke that the wife is furious; slamming her hands down into the sink. i do everything around here, might as well do this too. in your house, your father is always in-his-office. before you know better, your first boyfriend is the type to say it's just easier for you. you used to beg him to take you on dates. he used to make a big deal about it, about the sacrifice of effort, even if you were the one who did most of the planning.
someone on the internet makes a "POV: the most boring person you've ever met" where he puts a towel on his head and just talks like a normal person. his impression of a boring woman is just a woman that is talking about her pretty-average life without exaggeration.
you are sometimes actually sad in the reverse, because actually you did used to struggle to pay attention in conversations. you were also easily bored of normal things, your adhd pinging off of every radio tower in the vacinity. it took time and therapy and patience, and now you delight in the small things about your friends. you like having them show you their organizational systems and talk about their taylor swift tickets. you are entertained by them because you learned to be, even though your brain is structured to only be excited by novelty. you kind of hate the idea that the reason your father will never actually pay attention to you is that you're no longer interesting. eventually the shine wore off, and you were just a person, not a spaceship. he never learned how to just, like, form an actual intimate friendship. it was always at a distance, this sense - emotional closeness was too much. (and yes. he's homophobic).
you're already tired of whatever the fuck is happening with the words "divine feminine", a rancid take that is basically just a rebranding of the patriarchy in action. what the fuck do they mean "being small and delicate and needing protection" is feminine. the words they are looking for are that they want a partner, not that their desire for equivalent support is relegated to gender. the human desire for community is not actually gendered at all. also, what fucking wolves are these "divine masculine" men even battling. fuckken taxes? shouldn't their "desire to protect" also mean "protect you from emotional neglect", or are all emotions off-limits (and how sad would that be. that's a horrible bar to set.)
and they tell you it's really not bad actually, because it's just there. they suggest you get off the internet or you stop reading that book or you stop thinking so hard about the movie or you stop just-being-a-feminist because honestly it's a killjoy sort of thing and then you tilt your head to the side and there's that little siren in the back of your head. if things were actually fine, being a feminist wouldn't put a stop to anything, it would go completely unnoticed, because you wouldn't have any comment to make about any of this
but you are ruining your own life, they tell you. also, girls don't sit like that. also, all girls are catty. also, all girls are bad drivers. also, all girls just need a cute bracelet and an iced coffee.
you do like iced coffee, is the thing. when you close your eyes, the world around you has this strange note to it. and once you hear it, it never stops ringing.

I know liking Spirk is the basic bitch of Star Trek but she’s like a sister to me. Intuitive. 7 year old me who knew nothing about Star Trek knew those men were in love. In every possible Star Trek universe across time and space they find each other, reach for each other. She’s basic bitch Trekkie for a reason and it’s because Kirk and Spock Just ARE in love and anyone with eyes can see it.

One part of Barbie and the 12 Dancing Princesses we absolutely do not discuss enough is the fact that these 12 sisters share one bedroom.
A large gorgeous bedroom yes, and yes, I realize it's a plot point, but still!! I had to share a room with all 3 of my sisters for like a year, and we almost killed each other, but we were also unhinged and chaotic. There are absolutely wonderful parts about sharing a room with your sisters, but oh my gosh, the age gaps! Some of these girls are toddlers, and the others are in their late teens!
They absolutely conspire, but they've also probably had massive arguments and fights that start over the littlest thing and span days. As a result of these fights, does the bedroom get split into camps depending on who takes whose side?
The older ones clearly take care of the younger sisters, and how do they feel about it? Not even having their own space? Are they happy with the situation? Do they have a choice?
The magical portal was absolutely not the first time they snuck out, and as the triplets grow, I refuse to believe it's the last. What is someone going to do? Stop them??
What if the older sisters want to do something without the younger ones? Do they have a system for keeping them distracted? What about if it's the other way around?
Not to mention, we rarely see anyone who works in the palace, so 12 sisters with little to no supervision means unbridled chaos.
No wonder the King always looks exhausted.

Do you guys ever think about how many times CLAMP tiptoe around the word "death", in Clear Card? (you: what kind of question is that???)
Because it's an awful lot.
The actual verb 死ぬ (to die), the classical one, is never mentioned* to indicate "death", and I totally see the reasons why: mainly target and "world view" of the series (lord, if there's something I learned during these 8 years of observing the reactions from the JP fans is that the 世界観, the "world view" is EVERYTHING and if the authors dare doing something that goes against it, they won't forgive them. Especially for a series rooted deep in everybody's childhood).
* (Actually, it is used in chapter 43 in a funny skit with Kero, Suppy and Nakuru, where Kero says "I thought I would die!!!" because he's too embarrassed by the SyaoSaku scene he had to forcefully witness hidden in Sakura's bag 😂but it's a foolish scene)
I think the first time where they actually start to dangle it in our faces is in chapter 28, when they make Momo scream in panic: "If you rewind that far, the repercussions will be immesurable!!" and then Kaito confirming right after "Time magic shortens the caster's lifespan". 命を削る indeed means "to shorten one's lifespan", and what else does that mean, if not that he's killing himself little by little, by using time magic? Sure, magicians have a longer lifespan, but...
Another instance where they make us "sniff" the smell of death but they don't serve the actual meal is in chapter 33, when Kaito goes out in the garden to counter the attack coming from the Association. He condescendingly says 力不足と己の身が滅ぶのを恐れて, mocking them for not including time magic in their collective attack because they're afraid their power won't be enough and they'll literally wreck their bodies in the process. Kaito doesn't straight up say "they're afraid to die", but the verb 滅ぶ means "to perish, to be ruined, to be destroyed" and we all saw what effects time magic had on Kaito's body. He's basically calling them p*ssies, yes.
And excuse me, but the most apparent one....when Kaito (or the Clan) says multiple times "Her soul will break", should Akiho write on herself more power than her body can sustain....isn't that just a very generous way to avoid saying "Akiho WILL DIE" to not scare the young readers away? Because, think about it...if her soul breaks...what is left of her? What is left of Akiho, as we know her? Yes, just a shell, a corpse for use and consumption of the Association/Clan, exactly.
And what to say about the scene of chapter 41 when Nadeshiko is trying to mom-talk Kaito into reason and the guy answers "I guess it's because I'm getting closer to become the same kind of entity as you", meaning, a ghost??? Hence, he's basically saying "I'm about to die"? I always snicker when I read that part because I'm like "OH COME ON, CLAMP, MAKE HIM SAY THE WORD" 😂
Another instance where the characters dance around the concept of death is in chapter 51, when Momo gets to have this very mom-son talk with Kaito (yes, exactly, Kaito set into motion several mother figures throughout the story - Lilie, Momo, Nadeshiko herself - that should tell you SOMETHING). Momo is trying to make him understand that he's literally betted his life away when he made the contract with her, so that should give him an idea of how important this mission is to him, and for whom he's doing this for. She says "When you made the contract with me, you revealed your true name. We could say I hold your heart as magician in the palm of my hand". Here Momo is basically already mentioning the concept I've been saying time and time again when Kaito revealed his true name to Akiho in chapter 80: in CLAMP works, revealing your true name to someone is like placing the most vulnerable part of yourself in their hands. The "imagery" Momo suggests here is actually pretty disturbing: the word 心臓 (heart) is the one commonly used to indicate the actual organ, more than "heart as core of the emotions", and so what she's suggesting is that at any moment, without notice, she might close that hand and crush his heart, basically killing him. Of course Momo would never do that, but she wants to remind him of what damned situation he's put himself in, how far he went for the person he still isn't ready to recognize at this point of the story.
I think the closer they went to say the "forbidden word" was when Lilie in chapter 72 explained to Sakura the extent of her premonitory dreams: "I know things that will happen shortly ahead...things way far ahead in the future...and even things that will happen when I'll be gone".
Another instance where they TOTALLY dance around the real situation (that is, Kaito should've been dead-dead-dead by then) is in chapter 80 when Eriol explains to Akiho what Kaito had been doing: I'm not sure if it's Eriol who sugarcoated it in his speech, or Akiho herself while recounting it to Sakura, but she says "He messed with lots (of dangerous magic), so his condition wasn't supposed to be that good", another polite way to say "he should've been dead by now". In fact, what's keeping him alive is literally the fact that the pocket watch (and therefore, his time) is frozen for now.
And sometimes I wonder if the "unhappiness" or "grief" that Yelan foresaw for Sakura, in the eventuality she couldn't gain control of her own powers, included....death too....NAAAAAAAHHHH
(well, I mean, who didn't think of THAT when they made Kaito say that he could see Nadeshiko because he was close to dying?? Well knowing that Sakura could suddenly see her too?? they did that on purpose jfc)

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against the Barbie movie, but nothing in cinema will ever make me choke up or really capture the essence of girl/womanhood to me like the Dancing Queen scene from Mamma Mia! I tear up at that sequence every time I watch the movie, and why? Because not only does it start off with these life long best friends trying to cheer up a panicking and self-deprecating Donna, but it transitions into this beautiful moment of women young and old coming together to celebrate that no matter their age, or size, or past mistakes, they are the motherfucking dancing queen! Young and sweet! Only 17!! We get this beautiful collective scene of women throwing their duties off to dance and sing and be free and love themselves! No other scene I’ve seen in cinema that’s supposed to be about “girl power” or “feminism” has ever had this absolutely heart warming and genuine feel to it, or does it pull on the heartstrings in a way that doesn’t make you feel depressed about being woman. That scene to me outweighs the entirety of The Barbie Movie, not because The Barbie Movie wasn’t good, or because it didn’t have good commentary on what it’s like to be a woman, but because it once again failed in the aspect of empowering women in a way that doesn’t make us feel like we are at the mercy of everyone else. The Mamma Mia Scene goes from a woman slut-shaming herself and feeling terrible about her past to freely dancing her way through her town, among so many other women who probably at some point have felt the same regrets, but in stark contrast saying, but I am young and free and beautiful and who cares? Maybe I’m reading to deep into it, maybe it’s just a silly jukebox abba musical movie at the end of the day, but to me that scene, It says, we are a sisterhood and we have the freedom to not care what anyone thinks, we are the dancing queen.

lowkey got inspired by ur post about floating and maybe half in half with barbie fairytopia (iykyk)
reader with wings/flies/floats and stumbles across foul legacy injured one night. reader taking care of him, slowly becoming friends with fl until he is strong enough to fly again.
fl and reader flying/floating/dancing mid air and playing tag and generally having fun
one day reader's wings being clipped and no longer being airborne so now fls turn to help them out and care for them. they go on a journey to maybe uncurse the reader/get her wings back/look for a healer
*muttering* tengu reader... tengu reader... TENGU READER...
you know as much as anyone how dangerous Inazuma can be- you've lived a few hundred years, watching mortals and gods grow and develop side by side. you're a bit strange for your species, choosing willingly to live amongst humans rather than in the mountains; although your home is still a fair distance from the city, on the edge of Chinju Forest so you don't have to deal with constant stares at your crow-like wings, and it's here in the woods that you come across something- or someone- unlike anything you've ever seen
an injured Abyssal beast
the feathers on your wings flare as you stop in your tracks, immediately reaching for the blade you keep on hand at all times until you spot the splashes of dark, starry blood already seeping from multiple gashes and punctures, and the monster cranes its head to look up at you, letting out a heartbreakingly pained whimper
slowly, you lower your weapon, and the creature visibly slumps in relief
his name is Foul Legacy, you learn, and you're fairly convinced that he's the singular sweetest monster in the Abyss, if not the entirety of Teyvat. even when he's injured and can barely walk he insists on trying to follow you around the house, chirping curiously and poking at what you're doing or watching intently as you treat his injuries- soon the mortals who see you start spreading rumors of how you're accompanied by an intimidating but friendly beast, although he allows no one but you to touch him. Foul Legacy is particularly entranced by your wings, gently nudging them and fluttering his own with happy chirps. you're faster than he is, as tengu are known for their speed, but nighttime flights become a favorite pass time for you and him, especially when you can look up and see all the stars and their stories
so when one of your wings is grievously injured during a horrible lightning storm, Legacy shakes off his fear and prepares to venture into town in search of a proper doctor, not as a repayment, but as your friend
