Day 261 of Being Single for the First Second Time in My Adult Life
I think I fumbled Shawn.
He invited me out for a low-pressure opportunity to meet, and I was super sick with strep at the time but thought that sounded lame and embarrassing (???) so I told him I was busy.
And now he hasnât talked to me in over a week.
I know it doesnât make any sense now, okay?!
When someone nice and normal takes interest in me and I have an absolute inability to act right, it really reminds me how messed up I am in the dating realm.
Iâm so used to men being insanely persistent and ignoring my boundaries and feigned disinterest that I almost count on it.
I know that every day that I donât reach out, itâs going to get weirder and harder to reach out, and the stakes are going to feel higher and Iâm going to be more anxious, and I donât know how to fix it.
The longer I go without talking to him, the more I feel like what I potentially say to him has to be perfect and strategic and hilarious.
I see the connection floating away and I feel powerless to stop it.
But the worst part is that I donât get to be self-righteous or indignant, because he was literally just nice and normal and respected my boundaries and Iâm the one acting way too cool and detached on the outside but way too fixated on the inside.
Iâve been lapsing on my connections in general. Iâm letting my friendship with Rebecca slip too. Sheâs put all the legwork into the relationship: initiating it, texting first, orchestrating the two hangouts.
I know itâs time for me to take the reigns.
It just causes me so much anxiety.
And the anxiety is inhibiting, which makes being myself and reaching out harder.
So, how do I fix this?
I like my therapist, but her solution to anxiety just seems like such a do-nothing solution.
âAcknowledge the feelings but donât try to fight them, and youâll get desensitized to them in time,â
So, how am I feeling?
Iâm feeling inhibited. Iâm feeling self-conscious. Iâm feeling uncertain in my social abilities.
I feel paralyzed in indecision, because Iâm avoiding reaching out to escape rejection, but I also know that my prolonged distance guarantees rejection.
Okay. And what might happen if you put yourself out there?
Shawn has lived so much life and has seemingly been a self-sufficient adult for so long. I think he sees me as an equal in a professional career on the surface, but he doesnât really know yet. Iâve had like, the worldâs longest childhood. Iâm immature. I canât cook, I donât know how to gardenâI just found out that babies donât drink water last year. Iâm sexually inexperienced and have only slept with three people. Iâve also never felt self-conscious about the fact that Iâm sober by choice, but when itâs in the context of everything else, it feelsâŠuncool and like a lack of life experience.
But thatâs just your life and the stage youâre at now. If he doesnât like these things about you, doesnât that just mean youâre incompatible? And wouldnât you rather find that out for sure rather than making up his mind for him and always wondering?
Yes, butâŠI also donât want to witness his disappoint in who I am in real-time.
Who says heâs going to be disappointed in you because you donât know the same things he knows or have experienced the same things heâs experienced? Isnât learning from each other the beauty of a new connection?
Does he know about the medical things youâre learning about?
Does he know about your hobbies and interests?
Why do you always discount the things you know a lot about as unimportant or general knowledge, but are mortified when you donât know something?
Sure, you donât know anything about kids and you couldnât pick out a philodendron in a lineup of flowers, but how many people your age are as financially literate as you are?
Sure, you live with your parents in your 30âs, but youâre comparing yourself to someone who was forced to grow up and never even had that opportunity. Itâs not a fair comparison.
Okay, trueâŠbut what do I do now? Itâs been over a week. Heâs probably over it by now.
Dude, heâs been DM-ing you since 2017. I donât think heâs going to be over it in a week.
Just be yourself. If he doesnât like you, you just get to know itâs not right and move on without regret.
What if I say something stupid or am acting in a way thatâs so obviously weird and hot-and-cold?
Remember when you talked to Nick and he was like the way you act when you like someone x 1000? Super hot and cold? Weird and detached and pushing you away, but also very obviously enamored with you under the surface?
You canât be ANY worse than that, and that didnât stop you from being attracted to him for like, five years.
Youâve acted normal to slightly disinterested on the surface. Just make your interest in him more obvious.
I think youâll be fine.
But what if I show interest and he thinks itâs too much and rejects me?
Taylor, SHUT UP. If Liv from Tiktok can text her crush daily with very minimal reciprocated effort for TWENTY-SIX DAYS, you can text a guy who literally put himself out there and expressed interest in you first. JESUS CHRIST.
And what about Rebecca?
JUST TEXT HER AND MAKE PLANS. She knows you were recently sick. Thereâs no pressure to be alluring.

/// end of the semester post again + long rant oops
I have an undefined extension for my paper but I self imposed a deadline for Monday night/Tuesday morning. I did this with the realistic thought of working on it Sunday night for a few hours (thinking I would be 90% done), and then working on it for a few hours Monday night (then being fully done). Wellllll I didn't work on it yesterday so now I gotta do everything in one night. I got to sleep at least all day, but I'm like,,,, so overwhelmed. I genuine could not work on my paper last night/this morning bc I was so anxious and depressed and tired and every time I mustered up the ability to just re reread my draft the babies needed food. I think I could finish it all tonight, but I'm going hiking/hanging out with a friend tomorrow morning so regardless of whatever happens, I won't get to sleep more than an hour or two. And the faucet still isn't fixed. I tried last night and the whole sink may need to be removed bc there's so much rust I can't tell if the raucet fused to the sink or the sink fused to the faucet. Anyways, me and my mom are fighting again bc she was discouraging me from doing anything last night in case it turned into a huge project (and ofc it did) and I couldn't handle it in one night and we would have to call a professional. Changing a faucet is pretty damn easy,, when there isn't like an INCH of rust surrounding the base. Well, i can change the sink myself (that part doesn't have any rust), but we just need to buy one and ofc our house has a giant single sink that may have been custom made so we would need to call a professional to resize our sink hole to fit in a new sink. But she needed to call to find out who sells our sized sink (if they do) so we know if we can just go buy a new sink I can change it, or we buy a new sink then call a professional. So she didn't do that. And that's understandable and everything bc she's busy, but the point is, I said I needed to at least attempt this faucet change last night bc when else would it get done???? (hint: it will not be done until at least Wednesday, realistically at the earliest Frday, probably this weekend). Plus in attempting it, I got to see it's impossible to change and we can reasses what needs to be done. She said we would just handle it tomorrow when its not the middle of the night, which in a deluded idealized world would be perfect, but she works until 3:30 and nothing would get done until 4, and then we have no time to really do anything huge before 5:30/6 when we waln the dog,, then put the chickens to bed,, then need to feed the kittens again, and now its dark out just like yesterday and wow nothing got done. This happens every project and I'm sick of her saying "tomorrow" and MONTHS of not YEARS go by and nothing gets done. I have to do it myself while I have time and energy otherwise it genuinely will never be done. My plan is to measure, buy a new sink and keep it in the box, call a handyman/plumber, then make sure the old faucet can't come out and then they just replace the whole thing. Even tho I can probably figure out how to do it myself (the sink easily unscrews), it would be difficult and I'd rather sleep lmao.
I'm also slaty bc the neighbor was over when we argued a bit last night, and they both "deal with teenagers" (but her son is....really bad and not comparable to me at all) so every time I voice anything or call my mom out or anything she rolls her eyes and the neighbor agrees and thinks I'm irrational. Like, the neighbor only ever hears testimony from my moms side so of course she will think I'm an ungrateful insensitive child who needs to chill bc she doesn't see how my mom doesn't follow through on anything she says will happen, and it's a cycle of this until I blow up and do everything myself for years. I'm 20, almost officially a grad student, I know I'm young but I am certainly in no capacity a child anymore. Especially if you consider the responsibilities and real world adult roles I've taken on since I was 15. Even if I was a child, moms arent god and 99% of the time they are at fault for something in the situation.
This week I got my 2 finals too, so hopefully after this paper is done TONIGHT, I can hang out with my friend, sleep, do my first exam, then go to work Wednesday, then work and take my second exam on Thursday, and then work and do the faucet fiasco Friday. Until then, I will still not be eating much bc its such a big issue to wash stuff in the bathroom sink. But I'm surviving -- I'm eating enough calories, it's mainly just in potato chips and popcorn and cashews.
#max live blogs his final days of undergrad#rant#gotta go feed these kittens again#i am not cut out to be a momma cat#this is why i will never be a parent to a human child#this baby stage lasts WAY to long and the stakes are so much higher#plus you cant get excited about them opening their eyes lmao its one of my favorite parts about raising kittens from birth

Raise the Barre (Ch. 1)
Author: kpopfanfictrash
Creative Content Contributor: @baebae-goodnightâ (WHO MADE THIS PERFECTLY GORGEOUS MOODBOARD)
Pairing: Jimin / Reader
Rating: 18+ (Eventual Smut)
Genre: Enemies to Lovers / Dance Academy!AUÂ
Word Count: 7,003
Summary: You and Park Jimin have been rivals for as long as youâve known one another; ever since he tripped you in the front row of your first dance convention. When you graduate from high school and enter Russet Ballet Academy, you tell yourself youâre leaving all past quarrels behind. The main problem with this though, is that your past seems determined not to leave you alone.
Worse still, the obstacles you face while out in the real world might prove more challenging than anything your enemy has to offer.  Â
Thumbs hooked beneath the straps of your backpack, you paused on the sidewalk to tilt your head up. A sign reading Russet Ballet Academy hung from the building above, detailing the location of the next four years of your life.
It was the dream of many to attend and yet, few ever came to walk these halls as its students. Only eighty dancers were accepted to their dance program each year; the fiercest competition from all over the globe.
Somehow, you were amongst them.
The day youâd received your letter still felt like a dream but here you were, standing under the sign and knowing youâd made it. You stared at it a second longer before your mom came up and squeezed your shoulder.
âWow,â she said, also reading the sign. âSeems like just yesterday you fell on your ass at Hall of Fame, huh?â
âMom!â You laughed, the moment effectively broken. âWhy would you bring that up now? I was twelve!â
She grinned and glanced in your direction. âYou just had such enthusiasm! Picked yourself right back up and kept going. I shouldâve known then you would make it.â
Despite yourself, you felt your insides soften again. It sounded like something your old dance teacher, Miss Katie, wouldâve said. Sheâd always had faith in your perseverance and ability. You hadnât started competing until the age of eleven; in dancer years, this was considered late and yet, you grew quickly through the ranks. By the time you reached high school, you were known on the competitive dance circuit as one of the elites.
Your parents joked it was your contrariness that kept you going. Growing up, youâd never much liked hearing the word no â something your parents applauded and bemoaned in equal measure.
Hiking your bag higher, you turned to face your parents. âSo, are you going to take a photo, or what?â
âA photo! Great idea.â Scanning the sidewalk, your mom found your dad. âHoney, come here! Honey! Hone â honestly,â she huffed, waving both arms overhead.
Finally, your dad noticed and hurried in your direction. âHave you seen the gargoyles?â he asked, clearly impressed. âThe architecture of this building is incredible, Y/N. When you get settled, maybe you can find out for me who the builder ââ
âTake the picture, darling,â said your mom, handing over the camera.
She moved beside you, hugging you tight enough to make breathing difficult. You were happy though, smiling brightly as your dad took the shot.
âOkay, okay,â you said, laughing after the tenth frame. âI think you guys have embarrassed me enough for one day, donât you?â
âDebatable,â said your dad, grabbing your luggage to haul up the steps. âWeâve got to make up for all the days we wonât see you. Youâre not coming home until the holidays, right? Thatâs a long time!â
At this, a small pang went through you and you nodded. He was right â your parents lived a plane flight away and youâd never been the wealthiest of households. You wouldnât be able to return until three months from now, which was the longest youâd ever spent away from your family.
It was such a strange thought, you didnât know what to do with it. As crazy as it was, since they often drove you crazy, you hadnât ever lived far away from home and the thought made you sad. It was just another way your life was being upended.
As you entered the arched door of Grace Hall, your soon-to-be home, your head spun from the newness. In your small suburban town, youâd had a reputation. The best dancer, the straight-A student, the person with her act together â never mind what you did behind the scenes to make it appear that way. The point was, you were known.
Here, you were just another small fish thrown into the big pond. It wasnât that you were a bad dancer â far from it â but here, everyone was the best. Everyone at Russet had passed the same bar, which meant the stakes would be higher than ever before. You had never danced under that kind of pressure and scrutiny.
Stomach churning, you once again wondered if youâd made the right choice. Youâd been accepted into other Universities; ones without dance programs where youâd have a more secure future. Instead, you chose to pursue dance as a career.
It wasnât that other majors were without risk or difficulty, but there was a certain physical and mental exhaustion associated with dance which most found to be a deterrent. You once had a teacher who said if you needed to think twice about dancing, you shouldnât do it. Way too many people never made it to the top; if you werenât prepared to make sacrifices for what you loved, then this wasnât the path for you.
At the time, you hadnât thought twice about your decision, but that was before the events of Senior year.
A week before the final dance competition of the season, your tendonitis grew so bad, you physically winced whenever you landed a jump. Your teachers finally caught on and forced you to see a doctor, who forbade you from dancing in the upcoming competition.
It had been the last one of the year; your final chance to compete and show everyone â well, someone â why you were considered the best. You went to the competition despite your injury, determined to cheer on your teammates, but something hollow settled into your chest as you watched, realizing your time on the stage would someday come to an end.
You realized how tenuous your body was and, by extension, your career. Of course, youâd known this before, but it had been your first time to face this knowledge head-on and it scared you. Tendonitis wasnât something that went away, although it was a condition you could work through and manage. Still, your body would only get worse and although you knew you wanted to dance, now you had doubts.
As you stepped through the doors of Russet Academy, these doubts reared their ugly heads once again.
Hiking your bag further up on your shoulder, you plastered a smile on your face and pushed these thoughts away. That was last year. You were better now, fully recovered and approved to dance by your doctors. So long as you took care of yourself, there was nothing to fear.
More suitcases waited in the trunk of your dadâs rental car, but your roommate had already texted her arrival, so you headed upstairs. Noelle Carmichael was from California, a Sagittarius, had begun dancing at the age of three and loved caramel popcorn more than anything else in the world. All this information had been thrown at you during your first text conversation, which might have seemed like a lot, but after a summer of talking, you knew it to only be Noelle.Â
As you lugged your bag from the elevator â the singular service vehicle had been repurposed for move-in â a head poked itself from a room down the hall.
âY/N?âÂ
When you nodded, your roommate whooped and leapt into view.Â
âItâs me â Noelle!â she called.
She rushed to help you with your bags, chattering excitedly as you walked down the hall. Noelleâs move-in time had been yesterday, and her parents had already left, but they couldnât wait to meet you the next time they visited.
You found her enthusiasm contagious and before long, most of your worries had been banished to the sidewalk outside. It felt like youâd known Noelle for much longer than the few months you talked over the summer. This greatly relieved you, since youâd been worried about making friends at Russet Academy.
Dancers werenât always the friendliest, especially when it came to institutions like this. So much of dance was competition â competition for that ranking, that medal or that place in that dance company. It was hard to make teamwork a priority when so much of success was judged on the individual.
Noelle didnât seem to think this way though, which helped ease some of your fears. You had both entered the ballet track at the Academy. You werenât naturally a ballerina, but Russet recommended those who wanted to go into jazz or contemporary start with ballet. Smaller majors existed for tap and hip-hop, but those had never been your forte.
Meeting Noelle was enough for minimal tears to be shed while saying goodbye to your parents later that night. Your dad ended up crying, which of course set you off, but by the time they got in their rental car and turned the corner, youâd managed to mostly pull yourself together.
Noelle remained in the dorm while you said goodbye, lounging on her bed with a book in her lap.Â
You paused on the threshold of your room when you returned, taking in the strangeness of all your surroundings. Your old comforter on a lofted bed, your laptop perched on a strange desk, your clothes hung in an armoire. It was both strange and familiar; the sight of it brought tears to your eyes.
âOh, no!â Noelle said, hopping down from her bed. âDonât cry, Y/N! I only just stopped crying this morning. If you cry, then Iâll cry and people will think something terrible is happening here.â
You laughed when she hugged you, hugging her back in the middle of the room. It was comforting to know someone else felt this way; after a moment, you pulled back to wipe your eyes.
âIâm fine,â you groaned, shaking your head. âDamn. I didnât expect that.â
âI know.â Noelle smiled. âI was so excited to leave I forgot that deep down, Iâm a gigantic baby. Huge mamaâs girl.â
Stifling a laugh, you crossed the room to grab a Kleenex.
âIf it helps,â Noelle said. âSome girls down the hall are having people over tonight. We could go and meet some of our classmates before orientation starts tomorrow. It should be fun!â
âThat does sound fun,â you said, and you meant it.
A few hours later, you found yourself seated on equally horrible carpet in a room down the hall. Several other freshmen were seated beside you, sharing similar parting stories, which lifted your spirits.
âI bawled,â said Irene, clutching her chest. âIâve had this giant countdown in my calendar all summer. I crossed each day off with a marker and then suddenly, Iâm here and I miss my sister. Pathetic.â
Noelle laughed. âIâm just glad I was part of yesterdayâs move-in day. It means only half of you heard my gigantic breakdown last night. Mad embarrassing. Pretty sure I told my brother I love him.â She shuddered. âHeâs only supposed to get that honor on his birthday!â
The room cracked up, another girl chiming in and you swirled your cup, happily buzzed from the drink in your hand. You hadnât had alcohol many times before, but it seemed appropriate for a night of new experiences. No one here was drinking to get drunk, since orientation began tomorrow, but some social lubricant tended to help in times like this.
Ballet wouldnât start until Monday morning, so this was your last chance for a while to indulge. It wasnât that you couldnât drink during the semester, but youâd learned the hard way hangovers made for terrible class the next day. Youâd only done it once before deciding to ban the idea of alcohol the night before dancing.
The other girls on your floor did their best to put you at ease. Aside from your roommate, there were five other girls whoâd congregated in the room.
Ari and Jasmine lived in the room you all sat in. Ari lived within driving distance of the city, had the largest collection of gel pens youâd ever seen and had started dancing later in life (at age ten), which made it all the more impressive that sheâd gotten in. Jasmine was from a tiny city in the south and was also a studio dancer; you recognized her the moment she spoke, having run into her as a teacherâs assistant at a dance convention you went to.
Also present were Irene, a ballerina from Chicago and Lia, who was on the hip-hop track. They were also roommates and although you probably wouldnât have many classes with Lia, orientation tomorrow would be the same. As you got to know them better, the bubble of trepidation in your chest slowly deflated. Everyone here seemed nice â intense, but not as though they were out to get anyone.
As though conjured into being by your very thought, a girl appeared in the door.
She was tall, slim and had her hair pulled back in a French twist. Everything about her screamed ballerina, from her light blue warm-ups to her arched expression. The moment she appeared on the threshold, several people in the room quieted.
Noticing this, you glanced at her with renewed interest. It seemed the girlâs reputation preceded her, but you honestly had no idea who she was. Rather than introduce herself though, the girl merely sighed.
âI thought I heard something,â she said, her tone piqued.
Forcing a smile to her lips, Jasmine rose from the floor. âHey, Sabrina!â she said, making her tone bright. âWe were just getting to know one another. Did you change your mind about coming? We have room if you want to join.â
Despite her forced smile, you detected a glimmer of want beneath Jasmineâs words. Clearly, this Sabrina was considered a big deal. Jasmineâs hopes were immediately crushed the second Sabrina opened her mouth.
âNo, thanks,â she said, her gaze sweeping the room. âI need to get to sleep soon. I want to wake up early and get in a quick barre before breakfast.â
Noelle, seated beside you, stared at Sabrina in amazement. âYou already have access to rooms?â
Sabrina turned; a faint, amused smile crossed her lips. âYeah. I went to Russet Prep. Iâve known most of the teachers here for years.â
Hearing this, your stomach sank to the floor. Youâd known, of course, there was a feeder school into Russet Ballet Academy. Youâd received the same audition letter many years ago, but the cost and distance had been too much for your family to consider.
While youâd understood the fact that youâd be amongst great dancers, you hadnât thought specifically about Russet Prep ballerinas. Sabrinaâs presence instantly dampened your mood, since the way she glanced at you confirmed what you already knew.Â
She had a leg-up, she knew it and she wouldnât hesitate to use it.
Leaning back on the futon, you slowly sipped your drink. âDid you just come here to say that?â you asked. âOr did you want something else?â
Multiple heads turned to face you. Ireneâs lips twitched and beside you, Noelle let out a laugh. Based on their reactions, you got the feeling that Sabrina wasnât very well-liked by her peers.Â
Smile vanishing, Sabrina met your gaze. âThat was all,â she said. âJust wanted to ask if you could keep it down. Some of us are trying to take this opportunity seriously.â
With that, she turned and stalked from the room. The door slammed shut behind her and silence lingered â until Noelle snorted and others began to laugh.
âSome of us are trying to take this opportunity seriously,â Noelle mimicked, rolling her eyes. âGive me a break. Like we all didnât bleed into our pointe shoes to be here.â
The rest nodded in agreement and slowly, the conversation shifted to other topics. Although you joined in, uncertainty lingered in the back of your mind. It seemed some of danceâs cattiness had followed you after all. You werenât truly surprised by this; after all, you were barely three months older than youâd been in high school. It was too much to expect people to become adults overnight.
Still, at least there was one cause for celebration this evening. The fact that youâd arrived at Russet meant you no longer had to compete against your most fierce rival.
For the next four years, Park Jimin, utter bane of your existence, would be nowhere in sight.
Early the next morning, you stood in line for registration at Danley Hall and awaited your schedule.
âHonestly.â Noelle stood on her toes to peer down the hall. âWhy do they insist on handing these things out in person? We could easily get them online and skip all this nonsense.â
âWe need to take our ID card photos,â you pointed out. âBut yeah, it sucks. Youâd think they couldâve at least assigned us time slots.â
âDancers.â Noelle shook her head. âGreat at conceptualizing abstract choreography â not so great at administrative tasks.â
You laughed, facing forward as the line started to move. It stopped shortly thereafter, as did you, rearranging the bag on your shoulder. You recognized several people from last night and waved hello to them all, receiving greetings in turn.
When your phone vibrated in your pocket, you jumped in surprise. Pulling it free, you smiled when you saw the name of your boyfriend.
âOooo.â Noelle peered over your shoulder. âWhoâs that? Boyfriend?â
âYeah,â you laughed, swatting her arm as you opened his text. âItâs my boyfriend, Finn.â
âFinnâs a good name.â Noelle moved forward in line. âStrong. Noble. Damn, though â are you two doing long distance? Brave souls.â
âNo â thank god. Finnâs at Redfield University. His orientation was last week, so weâre planning to meet up later tonight.â
âRedfield? Thatâs so close!â Noelle gushed. âWow, you two are so lucky. And Redfield is a great school, too. I wholeheartedly approve.â
âWell, as long as you do,â you laughed.Â
âWhatâs he saying? Wishing you luck with registration?â
âThat, and asking where I want to get dinner tonight.â
âSickeningly cute. Iâd be jealous if I werenât such a great person.â
You snorted, about to respond when someone called your name.
âY/L/N, Y/N?â
Head jerking up, you saw a man at the office waving you forward. It seemed your time had finally come.
âThatâs me!â you said, stepping from line.
The first stop at registration were two, tiny desks set before the main office. Past these, you could see someone finishing up their student photo. A bright flash went off, momentary blinding as you winced and faced forward.
âHere you go!â you said, placing your paperwork down. âEverything should be in order.â
The paperwork man barely nodded, grabbing the folder to rifle through. He seemed content to take his time and you quickly grew bored, glancing around the lobby. Much of your class was waiting in line, looking amusingly enough like a middle school dance. There hadnât been general orientation yet, so most people had only met those in their (single-sex) dorm last night. Groups of boys and girls awkwardly faced off from across the hall.
While you waited, you began to size people up. It was unintentional, but you knew youâd be paired with someone for ballet and it seemed better to get a head start than not. Most people were unfamiliar to you, and youâd made no meaningful progress when a new voice said your name.
âY/N?â
Freezing in place, you continued to stare at the hallway before you.
You knew that voice. It was one you couldâve identified in the depths of Tartarus itself â which honestly, was the only place youâd imagined hearing said voice again, since it belonged to Park Jimin. Top hellion of the underworld.
Slowly, you turned and had your worst suspicions confirmed.
Park Jimin stared back at you in the hall.
He wore a jean jacket, white t-shirt and golden sunglasses perched on his head, despite being indoors. Every part of his attire screamed pretentious, but no one around you seemed to notice. Instead, a buzz spread over the crowd as more and more people realized who you were talking to.
Before you could compose yourself, you demanded, âWhat are you doing here, Park?â
Jiminâs smile disappeared. Slowly, he walked forward and closed the distance between you.
âSo, youâre not even going to try and be pleasant?â he asked, coming to a stop. Casually, he looked you up and down. âSurprised to see you here. Thought youâd stopped dancing, or something.â
Subconsciously, your hands balled into fists. Jimin had a way of getting under your skin that no one else did â even though admittedly, you couldâve just said hello. You didnât have to act like he was the anti-Christ, even if he was.
âI didnât stop dancing,â you said to him through gritted teeth. âYou know that perfectly well.â
Jimin shrugged. âHow was I supposed to know that? The last time I saw you, you were limping around like you were on your last legs. I just assumed.â
âI⊠was not limping,â you said with as much dignity as you could muster.
âWerenât you on crutches?â
âMy doctor made me use those!â
âAha!â Jimin grinned, triumphant. âSo, you were injured.â
âI had tendonitis,â you shot back. âHardly fatal, Park. Iâm fine now.â
âRight.â Jimin glanced at your feet. âHope it doesnât come back.â
From anyone else, you mightâve taken the words at face value, but this was Jimin. Heâd never wished for your success before, so it would be foolish to imagine otherwise now.
Gaze hardening, you took another step forward until you stood nose-to-nose. Well, nose to chin was more like it. Jimin had grown since you first began competing against one another. You remembered a time when you both were the same height. This had once been a source of great amusement for you, choosing to stand directly before him at awards ceremonies.
You opened your mouth to tell him off when the paperwork man said your name again.
âThatâs me!â you blurted, spinning around.
Jimin would have to wait, you decided as you strode forward. The paperwork man looked at you in alarm, clearly not used to having such enthusiastic participants.
âUh, I know,â he said slowly. âYou confirmed your name earlier. The photographer is ready,â he added, nodding towards the room Jimin had vacated.
Cheeks burning, you accepted your paperwork and nodded. Although you purposefully didnât look at Jimin as you left, you could feel him smirking at you from behind.
Refusing to give him the time of day, you brushed past â or you wouldâve, but the space was too small for dramatics. You nearly elbowed him in the spleen as you went, forced to squeeze against the wall in an undignified fashion.
Still, you didnât look back as you entered the ID office. Some of your anger became transparent in your photo-taking, though â this much was obvious when you were handed your ID. Staring at this in horror, you remained frozen in the hall when Noelle finished and joined you.
âOh, shit,â she said, glancing at your ID. âI feel a lot better about my photo now.â
âHey!â you said, hand curling around the photo.
Despite this, you laughed, since she was right. On a scale of model to mug shot, your ID was definitely on the latter end.
As you walked away, you shook your head and shoved the ID in your bag. In the corner of one eye, you could see Jimin lingering while he talked with other students. You recognized no one in his group, except for a guy you thought youâd seen on YouTube. Hope on the Street, or something. Probably on the hip-hop track.
âSeriously, though.â Noelle looked at you sympathetically. âWhat happened? Photographer tell you he was going to murder your family?â
âUgh, no,â you groaned. âJust got in my own head.â
âUh-huh. And the fact that you were talking to Park Jimin right before had nothing to do with it?â
Blinking, you glanced at her in surprise. âYou saw that?â
âKind of.â Noelle looked a bit guilty. âI mean, itâs hard not to notice Park Jimin wandering the halls.â
You couldnât help but scowl at this.
It was unprofessional, but your feud with Jimin went back so far, it was hard for you to be completely impartial. Your rivalry had begun when youâd both been picked to demonstrate the combination at NUVO dance convention and Jimin had tripped you while in the front row. Heâd apologized afterwards, claiming ignorance, but youâd seen enough of his dancing by then to know Jimin didnât make mistakes.
Heâd tripped you on purpose.
Jimin was known on the competitive dance circuit, like you, but he had an almost cult-like following on YouTube and TikTok. Rumor had it, heâd been asked to join Ariana Grande on tour the previous summer, which was why youâd thought for sure you were rid of him. It seemed this was no longer the case.
âYeah,â you grumbled as you neared Jimin in the hall. âHeâs here, alright.â
Noelle hid a smile. âYou donât like him.â
âHeâs an ass.â
âYeah, he does,â said Noelle, gazing wistfully at his butt as you passed.
âNoelle!â you snorted. âThatâs not what I said.â
âHuh?â Blinking innocently, she returned to you. âOh, you said â oh. Sorry. Though you said something different.â
The smile she gave was incorrigible though and, despite your best interests, you laughed.
âI mean, he does have a nice butt,â Noelle argued. âCome on, Y/N. You have to admit that,â she continued once you were out of earshot.
âHadnât noticed.â
âLiar.â
âI mean, heâs a dancer!â you sputtered. âWe all have nice butts.â
âValid counter-argument,â Noelle said as you walked outside. âBut seriously, heâs not a good guy?â
Paused on the sidewalk, you turned to glance at the building. Danley Hall rose above you; the location of class every day for the foreseeable future. Some of that now felt tainted by the prospect of seeing Jimin every day, as well.
With a sigh, you met Noelleâs gaze. âNo,â you said at last. âWe were rivals all throughout high school and believe me, there arenât enough terrible superlatives to describe Park Jimin. Heâs the most annoying, most childish, least humbleââ
ââbiggest suck-up, least trustworthy, mind-numbing idiot,â you finished, stabbing your salad with a fork.
Finn laughed at you from across the table. By this point, your feud with Jimin was old news to him. Shaking his head, curly brown hair flopped into his gaze.
âDamn, Y/N,â he said sympathetically. âThat sucks. Canât believe that jerk had the audacity to follow you to Russet. Sounds to me like he canât get enough of you.â
Ignoring this, you rolled your eyes. âBelieve me, itâs not that. Park Jimin doesnât care about anyone but himself. Itâs just Russet, you know? The most prestigious dance academy in the country. I just donât understand how I didnât know this,â you sighed, still troubled by the thought. âHow come I didnât know heâd be in the freshman class?â
âI donât know.â Finn shrugged. âMaybe he doesnât have a Facebook?â
Most of the freshman class had connected on Facebook, at least before someone made a Whatâs App chat for the group. Finn was probably right about Jimin not giving out his social media.
 âThatâs probably true,â you grumbled. âBut still.â
Finn laughed at your expression. Reaching across the table, he squeezed your hand in his. âHey,â he said gently. âYou beat him for what â four years? So, this is just another four years of putting him in his place. Youâll be fine.â
He was right, although in all honesty, Jimin had won about fifty percent of the time against you. It was one of the reasons youâd pushed yourself so hard in high school.
âYouâre right,â you said, somewhat mollified.
âOf course, I am,â Finn said, letting go of your hand. âYouâre talking to a man who put his loft bed together alone. By hand.â
You looked at him in alarm. âDid you at least use the manual?â
âPlease, Y/N. Men donât use manuals. We donât believe in them, much as we donât believe in cleaning, cooking, or coming in second.â
âGross,â you groaned, throwing a cherry tomato at him. âWorst ad ever for the male sex. Besides, itâs not true â I beat Jimin in dance plenty of times.â
âOh, come on,â Finn laughed. âHe doesnât count.â
Something about the way he said this made you sit a bit straighter. Finn resumed cutting into his steak, but you continued to stare at him across the table.
âWhat do you mean by that?âÂ
Finn looked up in surprise. âWell, you know. Itâs not like heâs super manly.â
You stared at him, bewildered.
âI mean, he wears tights, Y/N.â
At this, your eyes narrowed. It wasnât like you were Jiminâs biggest fan â you despised him, actually â but Finnâs argument was just stupid, even if he meant it as a joke.
âAnd?â You tilted your head. âHe also bench-presses women above his head for fun. Are you being serious? Just because he ââ
âWhoa, wait â I was kidding,â Finn said, looking stricken. âIâm sorry, Y/N. I just meant it as a joke, you know, since you hate the guy. Truce?â
You hesitated, still miffed, but ultimately deciding it wasnât worth it. Finn truly looked sorry and this was Jimin, after all. Not that this made it better, but sometimes you grew tired of lecturing your boyfriend. Sometimes, it was just easier to let things go.
âI â yeah,â you said after a long pause. âFine. Truce.â
âCome on.â Finn smiled and reached for your hand again. âYouâre not really mad, are you?â He looked hopefully at you from beneath his curls. âJiminâs the worst. Whatâs got you this upset?â
Sexism and toxic masculinity, you wanted to say, but he was right. This was Jimin and you hated that guy. It felt kind of weird to want to defend him to your boyfriend.
Still, though. Finnâs comment was annoying; it was one thing for you to insult Jimin. You did it based on Jiminâs merit, his talent, and the way he kept beating you. Youâd never once insulted Jimin because of his gender. In the oddest of ways, it felt like your boyfriend had insulted you when he put down male dancers.
âIâm just annoyed by the whole situation,â you said at last, settling on a half-truth. âI hate the fact that Jimin won our bet.â
Finn nodded in sympathy, settling back in his seat to eat the rest of his meal.
You stared at your salad, no longer as hungry as you had been before. Remembering the bet had thoroughly ruined your appetite.
The bet had been made Senior year, a consequence of years of competition with no real declared winner. Jimin had been the one who suggested it, albeit after you goaded him into it.Â
It had been your first competition of the season and youâd taken home the top trophy â First Overall in the Senior solo category. Jimin had come in second and when you met backstage, both holding your awards, youâd come to a stop to size one another up.
âNice trophy,â Jimin said, his tone dripping with derision.
âRight?â Turning it over, you examined it. âNot sure where Iâll put it, though. My shelves at home are pretty full.â
âI think youâll be fine,â Jimin said. âCompetition is pretty stiff this season. I doubt youâll win again.â
âAre you referring to yourself as my competition, Park?â
âWho else?â
âI wouldnât worry about me,â you said, stepping closer. âAfter all, I beat you today. I can do it again.â
âReally?â He smirked. âWhat competitions are you going to this season?â
You told him, listing them off one by one without looking away.
Jimin listened and nodded. âIâll be at four of those. How about a bet, then? Whoever wins First Overall at three of the five competitions declares themselves the winner.â
âHm. Whatâs the catch?â
âNo catch.âÂ
You paused, considering the implications of such a bet. âI donât get it, though. What does the winner win?â
âUh, our rivalry? Bragging rights for eternity? Pride? Take your pick, Y/N.â
âPride,â you said with a snort. âLike you have any of that.â
âI donât. Let me win it.â
You had to clamp your lips together to keep from laughing; it wouldâve ruined your image to laugh at your declared enemyâs joke.
âAlright, fine,â you said with a shake of your head. âBut hereâs what I want in return â are you listening, Park?â
âTrying to.â
âAt the end of this season â when I win â I want you to look me in the eyes and tell me Iâm the better dancer.â
Jiminâs smile widened. âAnd what if I win?â
âImpossible. But if you do,â you allowed. âIâll tell you youâre the better dancer. Deal?â
âDeal.â
And that had been that.
Shaking your head, you returned yourself to the present and took another bite of your salad.
âWe were tied,â you said, the same anger returning. âJimin had won twice and I had won twice. It wasnât fair that he just got to win because I forfeited the last competition. I was injured!â
Finn nodded in agreement, just as he had every other time youâd told him this story.
Feeling a little bit guilty, you pushed your tirade aside and tried to focus on dinner. A bet from Senior year wasnât really important in the long run. All that mattered was that you and Jimin had ended up at the same place.
Still â you couldnât help but worry heâd pop up one day to make good on the promise. You still hadnât told him he was the better dancer; itâd be even more humiliating to do so now, surrounded by all your classmates from Russet.
âAnyways,â you said with a sigh. âEnough about him. How was your day?â
Finn began a story about the supposed shower-caddy thief on his floor and you settled back, nodding and laughing at all the right times. Listening to Finn talk was comforting. He reminded you of home, of family dinners and long drives and date nights at the movie theatre.
Being in his presence felt like second semester Senior year â that invincible feeling of knowing where you were headed and feeling unstoppable. Having him in the city made the transition to Russet slightly less terrifying. He was your single known in a future of unknowns.
Well, except for Jimin. Jimin was also known, but in the opposite way. The thought of him was anything but calming; he made your jaw clench, blood pound and heart start to race.Â
Even in looks, Jimin was the complete opposite of Finn. Where Finn had floppy, brown curls, Jiminâs blonde hair was usually swept back from his face. Finn was a light-hearted guy, always talking with his hands and laughing at nothing, whereas Jimin was nothing but intense. Every time you saw him at competitions, he was either practicing or sleeping. There was no in-between.
Finn took things one day at a time, which was something you envied. You always felt you were hurtling towards something, the days passing by too quickly to do everything that you wanted. It was part of what made you a good couple, you decided. Finn took things slowly and you sped him up.
Aside from his major, Finnâs future was wide open. He had no real direction other than to learn and have fun, which you also envied. As much as you wanted to have fun at Russet, you knew there wasnât much time on your chosen career path. Each second counted and you couldnât afford to waste one.
Starting that night.
Finn walked with you back to campus, dropping you off at Grace Hall with a lingering kiss. It became more heated than you anticipated, each of you panting when you broke things off to head inside. It had been a week since heâd come to Redfield, which was the longest youâd been apart since you lost your virginity to Finn at the start of the summer.
The sex had been good as of late, but Noelle was inside and you had no desire to hook up with your boyfriend in the bushes outside your dorm.
Once youâd returned, you collapsed on your futon and groaned when you read the schedule for tomorrow.
Noelle laughed from her bed. âCopsonâs ballet class?â
âCopsonâs ballet class,â you agreed with a sigh.
Vlad Copson was known, even to the incoming freshmen. He was a brilliant dancer and choreographer, but utterly terrifying as a teacher. Rumor had it every freshman was assigned to him their first year just to lower the class number from eighty to seventy.
You didnât believe this, of course, but that didnât keep your insides from churning. As you tried to fall sleep later that night, you realized with certainty that this was a beginning. Everything youâd done before now, everything youâd once achieved no longer mattered.
Everyone at Russet was on the same foot and all that mattered was what lay before you. Not at all cheered by this thought, you pulled up your covers and eventually fell asleep.
Vlad Copson turned out to be exactly what you had pictured; an immaculate man with a stern demeanor, wearing the exact same dress code he expected of his students.
He stood before the class the next morning, next to the stereo with both hands clasped before him.Â
âWelcome,â he said, looking over his students. âIâm Vlad Copson, but you may call me Mr. Vlad for the duration of class. This is Ballet, Level 1.â
Approximately twenty faces stared back, caught in a mixture of certain awe and terror. You knew yourself to be among them, standing at the back of the room with Irene and Noelle. Youâd been relieved to find them both in your classes, since there were two other schedules they couldâve been sorted into.
Unfortunately for you though, prep school Sabrina and hellion Jimin were also part of your schedule. They stood at the front on the opposite side and you did your best not to look at them, knowing no good would come from it.
Everyone in class was dressed exactly the same. The women wore leotards, buns, ballet belts, tights and pointe shoes. By this stage in your career, you were expected to do the entirety of ballet class on pointe. There had been much rosin-ing and banging of shoes before the class had started.
âThank you to those who were on time,â Mr. Vlad said, casting a pointed glance at a boy near the front. Said boy had entered the room a few seconds after 8:00 AM. âFor today, Iâll be lenient and let everyone stay. From now on though, class will start promptly on the hour. Those who arenât ready will be asked to leave and come back when they can respect my time. Understood?â
A ripple of voices chorused yes.
âGood.â Mr. Vlad arched a brow. âYou may have heard Iâm a tough teacher. This is true. I am hard on my students, since youâre expected to be the best. Do you know how many applications Russet received this year alone? Nearly two thousand, and these were only from those who felt qualified to apply. Russet is a once in a lifetime opportunity, so I expect everyone who enters my classroom to act like it.â
Listening to him speak sent a bead of sweat down your neck. Although he didnât say it specifically, you knew what Mr. Vlad meant. There were two thousand qualified individuals waiting to take your place if you failed. And that didnât even include other students at the Academy, or even other dancers who waited out in the real world.
âFor those who make it to the end, this will be a life-changing event.â Mr. Vlad paused. âThere are teachers here who are far better than I â and Iâm considered to be one of the best in the world. Youâll be pushed to your limits, but youâll also grow at a tremendous pace. We gave you a spot because we believe in each of you. Prove us wrong, though,â he warned. âAnd that will be that.â
A lingering silence fell and in that quiet, you and Noelle glanced at each other. Again, you were glad for a friendly face. The entire speech wouldâve been unbearable without one.Â
The boy whoâd been late was as red as a tomato, clearly embarrassed at having been singled out. You wouldâve felt bad, except you knew it wouldnât be the last time Mr. Vlad put someone on the spot. The attention could easily swing to you before the end of class.
âThatâs enough chit-chat, I think.â Mr. Vlad turned towards the stereo. âWeâll start at the barre.â
No one moved and once heâd reached the music, he arched a brow. âWhy is everyone still standing in the center, gawking? Barre!â
Had you been watching from outside, it mightâve seemed comical how quickly everyone scattered. You and Noelle chose a barre near the front, setting water bottles down and moving to stand at the center.
Placing yourself in first position, you turned your head and surveyed yourself in the mirror.
âEyes on me, not the mirror!â Mr. Vlad called, forcing your gaze his way. âBefore we get started, Iâll assign your ballet partners for the semester. You wonât do anything with them until across the floor, but I hate to disrupt our flow later on. When I call your name, raise your hand.â
Your heart sank as you turned to face forward.
This was something youâd known was coming. Ballet partnering was part of the set first year curriculum, but youâd been under the severe misimpression youâd be allowed to choose your own partner. Information on the process had been limited and youâd heard conflicting accounts from upperclassman before your arrival. Apparently, the teachers did something different each year.
âAhn, Irene!â
Irene raised her hand, waiting awkwardly to hear her partnerâs name.
âOlson, Brian! You two are partners.â
The red-faced late boy looked at Irene in alarm, then nodded. Irene nodded as well, lowering her hand and Noelle winced.
âSucks,â she muttered beneath her breath. âAlready paired with trouble.â
Privately, you agreed. Itâd be unfortunate to be partnered with someone whoâd already been singled out. You could only hope your assigned partner would be better than that.Â
Mr. Vlad turned. âY/L/N, Y/N!â
Your hand immediately lifted, waiting for what seemed like forever, until â
âPark, Jimin!â

So, where do we go from here?Â
Camp Cretaceous Season 4 Prediction (LONG):Â
As much as Iâve argued that we need to stay on Isla Nublar the whole time, turning right back around after that final sendoff would be too much of a forced âReturn to Status Quoâ for a story that has propelled itself forward so much. The kids did it. They won. They got off the island. I feel like we've explored almost everything we needed to (what's left? The bamboo forests? The gardens?), and though we never saw Triceratops or Stygimolochs or got chased by Gallimimus, we can't just go back after everything's increased. The only Big Challenge remaining on the island is the volcano, and that's six months out.
But the storyâs nowhere near done, because we have four major plot threads that need to be addressed before the show ends:
1. Most immediately, we have the dinosaur in the closet. Is it a baby Scorpios? Blue? A Monolophosaurus? A Dilophosaurus? A baby Ouranosaurus? A baby Baryonyx? Jeanie? We donât know, but odds are that itâs going to throw a wrench into the kidsâ plans to return home.Â
2. The state of Sammy's family and the ranch are still in flux; what will happen to them? Did they get all the money they needed from lawsuits? Does Mantah Corp have dirt on them? Are they going to try to interfere with Sammy because she Knows Too Much? They were set up as villains for a reason.
3. Darius and Kenji's strained relationship is a setup for future conflict.
4. We need to see Bumpy again. This isn't something that âneedsâ to come up, but the fact is that she's one of the main charactersâbringing her back is essential to the story's quality, and we're not missing that thread. She either needs to get off the island, or we need to see that she lives afterwards.
Considering all of these things, I can rule out a lot of options: we're not getting chased right back by the Mosasaurus, and the creature in the ship isn't just going to wreck the engines and send them back. They're less than a hundred miles off of Costa Rica, so even if they're cruising at a cautious ten miles an hour, they should be able to see the shore within twenty-four hours, which means we're not going on an island-hopping adventure, either. You need dinosaurs, too, so nothing generic will happen.
Thus we can consider:
1: The kids are on the mainland of Costa Rica, and lost in the jungle or mountains. Just because they found their way back to mainland doesn't mean that they're going to find a port, and if their stowaway or the Mosasaurus causes problems, they can crash easily. If it's a Scorpios Rex baby, they'll have to hunt it and capture/kill it to finish their mission from this season. The problem with this option is that it just retreads the threat from the last season, which is boring; if it's a Monolophosaurus (or two), then it might not even impact things...so, I don't think the âkids in the jungleâ plot is going to stick. I give this one a âDâ.
2:Â The kids run into a patrol vessel before landing. Isla Nublar is under quarantine. While they're on the boat, their rescuers/captors unleash the creature (which could be Scorpios!), and now there's a tight opening adventure on the boat. Thrilling, but not much of a big season if it's just a navy vessel...which leads me to:
3:Â This is the only way I think we go back to Nublar, and that is if they meet up with a patrol boat, and then the creature in the hold (a small Scorpios???) rampages through the ship. They put it down, but the noise attracts the Mosasaurus, which wrecks the boat and puts them right back on Nublarâseparated and with a bunch of adults alongside them. With a cast of much-more-plot-vulnerable adults to care about now (perhaps including Roxie, who joined the crew?), the stakes are higher and the kids are guidesâmaybe even separated at different points on the island. Not a big fan of this idea, thoughâagain, it's retreading, and the number of excuses for âmilitary-trained adults can't radio for helpâ is slim. So, I give it an âFâ. But let's refine it a little further:
4: The kids get picked up by a patrol boat that is actually working for Mantah Corpâand they discover the dinosaur that has snuck aboard. Seeing an opportunity, Mantah Corp excitedly takes the kids to their secret base...on Isla Sorna. Though the dinosaurs on the island are mostly extinct and sick from disease, the abandoned island was perfect for a field laboratory. Specimens to study, buildings that already existed, a quarantine keeping prying eyes away...there's a whole organization here now. The kids escape from captivity (as they do) and find themselves wandering around a new island with new dangers: all around them are long-decayed skeletons of dinosaurs from the past, and hunting them are bizarre creations from Mantah Corp's labs. It's an island of ghosts now, and the kids need to escape...and perhaps, when they do, they find that they only have enough fuel to make it to one place: and it's the place they never thought they'd return to.
This plot covers pretty much every baseâthe stowaway, Mantah Corp, the relationships, and a chance to return to Bumpyâand gives them a proper, probable reason to go to Isla Sorna that isn't âFate decided that it would be fun if they went to a different islandâ. I give this one âB-to-Aâ probability.
However...
There is one other major option:
Three. Year. Timeskip.
There are only two things holding me back from leaning into this: one is that it would deny us the sight of the kids reuniting with their families. We need that. We need some sort of triumphant return home. The other, simpler, more obvious problem is the monster in the hold; that kind of cliffhanger seems like it should come up. Obviously both of these problems can be solved via flashbacks, or a prologue, but...the need for new models and such would be an issue, because âbudgetâ has always been a thing.
The other major problem, obviously, is the fact that the kids would need a reason to come back together. Maybe they all gather together for an anniversary and a dinosaur attacks them; maybe they're all being interviewed; but a far more interesting, compelling, and obvious motivation would be this:
Bumpy is alive and in danger.
Thus, all six kids (well...at least two would be adults now...) go running off to find and rescue Bumpy. They're bold and independent, rebellious and reckless: they each go to save their dinosaur friend, and they end up running into each other and ultimately facing Mantah Corp, who is one of the major power players in the prelude to Dominion.
This one has the ultimate story potential, in my opinon. You have Kenji and Darius meeting again with death glares because they left on poor terms. Ben has adjusted. Yaz and Sammy have had three years of yearning, notes, and problems (or maybe Sammy vanished...). And Brooklynn has had to forge a completely new life for herself, because she can't deal with internet fame anymoreâeveryone asking her about the island wherever she goes was just too much.
It directly sets the stage for Dominion, allowing glimpses of the world as it will be in the movie. Maybe the kids set more dinosaurs loose from Mantah Corp's (land-based in this one) laboratories as they free Bumpy. Maybe they become renegades and outlawsâforced to live in the wilds of California, Nevada, or Mexico. They're no longer looking for rescue, but for refuge. Maybe Claire has a sanctuary, a real one, that they have to get to. This would make it a full-scale adventure in a world filled with dinosaurs. Whatever they brought back with them is out there, too...and perhaps an old, scarred nemesis they never thought they would see again.
The biggest drawback to this is that the show hasnât been running long enough for kids who started it to connect with the grown-up forms of the characters, but also...at the same time...it could work? I dunno, I give it âBâ probability, A+ potential.Â
Other thoughts that could work in any of these:
Roxie is working for Mantah Corp. She's unemployed, combat ready, and bitter at InGen...also, she'd look great in a uniform.
Brand is involved in any mainland shenanigans.
Dodgson. Dodgson. Can we get Dodgson here?
#jurassic world#camp cretaceous#camp cretaceous spoilers#camp cretaceous season 4#mantah corp#look you don't give an organization that cool of a name without making them the focus#but I feel strongly like it's going to be the 'captured by mantah corp' option#gives the highest stakes#and a secret lab on sorna gets them there#because let's be real: them accidentally going to sorna would be stupid#it's not going to happen#BUT#if they're TAKEN there?#sure wonderful do it that's great#love it#but also you really can't have Sorna be what it was or the enitre lore of the Jurassic World franchise goes up in smoke#but also by GOING to Sorna#you can EXPLAIN IT for everyone#hence why I think this is the plan#but again: they're NOT JUST GOING TO CRASH THERE#that would be stupid and even if it happens I am GOING TO KEEP SAYING THAT#jw:cc

Sorry this is later than usual folks! Busy schedule, but Iâm determined to still post on Mondayâs regardless!
XXX
I couldn't have been more elated than I was when Madja officially lifted my period of confinement and bedrest. Another couple of weeks flew by since receiving the news of Eris becoming the new High Lord of Autumn, and things were moving fast. After initially sending out invitations to our allies; directing them on where to send their armies and encouraging them and their entourages to come and stay in Velaris, the last thing I wanted was to be restricted to switching from my place in bed or ambling around the estate with little else to do while Rhys, Mor, and Clotho worked seamlessly to create adequate accommodations for our guests. Though we didn't have a palace like Thesan's to host them as he did for our summits, we had more than enough space for them with the guest suites I drew into the blueprints for the estate. However, neither Rhys nor Clotho allowed me to do anything while still in recoveryâeven when the first of the High Lords and their entourages began to arrive.
Helion was the first, with Thesan following only a couple of days later. With them being the closest to our court, they wasted no time in gathering their numbers and were in Velaris within days following their armies. They both marveled at how far along I was now, and especially at the impressively large mound my belly had grown to. Helion had cracked a joke about my size, which earned a protective growl from my mate and an earnest laugh from me. Thesan had been rather stunned and actually worried that I might go into labor at any given second; so, whenever we were in the same room, he watched me with wary eyesâafraid that any sudden movement might bring about the labor pains. He had reacted the same way with Viviane when she attended our last summit; using whatever resources he had at his disposal, like having every available midwife in the palace, in order to make sure she was comfortable and in case of emergency.
As our plans continued to move forward, I slowly and surely regained my strength with faithful reassurance from our healer that my health was flourishing. Finally, after an agonizing two weeksâwhere I grew more and more antsy and eager to jump into some kind of work, Madja announced that I was fully recovered and that I had officially entered the final stage of my pregnancy. With approximately two and a half months left, ending this coup was our crucial next step in preparing for our son. The last thing Rhys and I wanted was to welcome him into the world while simultaneously trying to quell the civil unrest in our court. With the threat having loomed over us since the beginning of my pregnancy and causing my mate and I great periods of stress and nearly cost us our son's life, ending Keir's act of tyranny would grant us the peace that was long ago stolen from us. Now that the end was in sight, I couldn't help but feel a sense of reliefâknowing that our chances of a favorable outcome was just within our reach, and then we could shift our focus back onto welcoming our baby.
Madja's announcement had come just in time as well. Kallias and Viviane were due to finally arrive this afternoon, along with their newborn Eira. With Helion and Thesan well-adjusted and working closely with Rhys, Tarquin also having arrived just a few days ago, Kallias and Viviane were the last of our allies we would hostâTamlin and Eris remaining at their prospective courts for now but sending their contingencies of armies ahead of them. The Winter couple had wisely decided to wait the longest in order to allow the bond between them and Eira to calm. In her letters following Eira's birth, Viviane explained that while she was recovering from the ordeal, Kallias's mated instincts caused him to shelter her and Eira for nearly a month. They were also adjusting to their newborn daughter, and as mates, both of their instincts sent them into a frenzyâtheir innate urges compelling them to shelter their child. The first three months had been critical, Viviane explained, not only for her and Eira's recovery from the birthing process, but also in learning how to parent their daughter while their natural tendencies ruled them. Over those last three months, their compulsions slowly ebbed back into a sense of normalcy and they were able to integrate themselves back into civilization.
Rhys and I understood that level of vulnerability in a mated bond, having experienced it ourselves during my own convalescence. It only made us all the more grateful that they chose to side with us to end our dilemma, and it also provided a safe haven for Viviane and Eira. Viviane was nowhere near ready to fight three months postpartum, and since she and Kallias still couldn't be parted with each other for long, she and her baby would remain safe with me while Kallias and Rhys worked together with the other High Lords when the time for the confrontation finally came.
"Mind already abuzz this morning, Feyre darling?" Rhys purred in my ear; the arm thrown over my waist moving to pull me closer while we lay in bed.
I smiled, letting him bring me closer until my back was flush against the hard planes of his chest. I lazily checked to make sure my mental shields were intact, having just recently been able to keep them in place once again, while his lips drew a lazy line of kisses from my ear to the crook of my neck.
"How did you know?" I asked softly, turning my head into his.
"I don't need to read your mind in order to tell when you're excited, my love," he hummed.
My smile grew with a quiet laugh that quickly turned into a soft gasp as he rolled his hips into mine. I breathed his name, ready to reluctantly protest until he reminded me that with my lying-in suspended, we were clear to resume our bedroom activitiesâas promised between a private conversation with him and the healer. Another roll of his hips had me nodding eagerly at his silent request. Our joining was slow and gentleâRhys taking me from behind at a leisurely pace. We took our time enjoying ourselves, delighting in being unhurried and reaching our peaks at staggered intervals.
"Now we can both greet the day with a better sense of ease." Rhys said as he nipped at my earlobe afterwards, his voice still deep and husky.
I laughed and turned onto my back to face him, resting a hand on my belly as I released a deep and relaxed sigh. "We're really going to be okay, aren't we?" I asked.
He placed a hand next to mine, running it up and down the expanse of my stomach gently. "Are you having doubts?"
I paused in thought. "I've just...been afraid. I know the situation isn't as dire as it was with Hybern, but the stakes still feel so much higher this timeâŠ"
"That's understandable," he said as he looked at my stomach. "This time you're pregnant, and we do have more to lose."
I frowned, tears swelling and threatening to fall before Rhys pressed a reassuring kiss to my brow. "But we are going to be okay, Feyre. I have promised you from the beginning that we would make it through this ordeal together, and we have. We're so close, and Keir will be dealt with. Then in a matter of months we'll be holding our son in our arms knowing his world is safer," he promised.
I blinked away my tears, Rhys brushing his thumb along my cheek gently. "I love you," I whispered.
He smiled and pressed a kiss to my lips this time. "I love you, Feyre," he said and moved to kiss the top of my stomach gently. "And I love you too, my son."
I loosed another long breath, allowing it to calm the last of my nerves as Rhys moved back to his place at my side. "Are you feeling well enough to have breakfast with the others?" He asked.
I nodded. "Should I scare Thesan by faking a few early labor pains?"
He threw his head back with a loud laugh. "You might just scare everyone, my love, including our friends who also heed your condition at all times," he answered.
I giggled and sighed dramatically. "That would be a little mean, wouldn't it?"
"Positively cruel, Feyre darling."
"All right, but I still want to find some way to torture Thesan, just a little bit."
Rhys laughed again before climbing out of bed, pulling me along with him as we began our routine in preparing for the day.
XXX
Eira was the most beautiful baby I had ever seen.
She was technically the only baby, human or high fae, that I had ever seen; yet I couldn't take my eyes off of her. Viviane and Kallias arrived promptly after lunch; Kallias having safely winnowed the three of them to the main port in Velaris, where Rhys and I happily greeted them. A sleeping Eira was wrapped up in swaddling blankets, tucked into her mother's arms and I noticed this time it was Viviane who looked wary of her surroundings rather than her mate. At the summit, Kallias had been the one on high alertâhis feral intuition heightened as a natural reaction to protect his vulnerable mate. Now it seemed their roles were reversed.
While Viviane was more than glad to see me, and even delighted in how much my belly had grown over the months, she kept Eira close to her chest the entire time it took us to walk back to the estate. Even now, as the four of us were gathered in the largest guest suite we had, Viviane was perched on the settee, cradling the baby close as she nursedâKallias and Rhys in the adjoining sitting room to allow them privacy.
"She's so tiny," I breathed, marveling as I watched the small bundle in her arms.
Viviane brightened. "She's actually a lot bigger than when she was first born," she said, touching her youngling's pale rounded cheek.
I stared as Eira let out a small groan in response to her mother's touch, continuing to suckle quietly. Her hair, as white as her parents, was a smooth and thin coating on her perfectly round head; her eyes as icy blue as Kallias's, while the rest of her features resembled Viviane exactly. She reminded me of the female's sister, who I had only seen a handful of times since the war. After recalling a conversation where the two mentioned their looks came from their family's strong lineage, it came as no surprise to see that Eira was a carbon copy of her mother.
"Does that hurt?" I asked.
"Nursing?" She shook her head when I nodded, "Not really. It took some time to adjust at first, but it's not exactly painful."
I brushed an idle hand along the expanse of my belly. "There's so much I don't know yet," I sighed.
She smiled reassuringly. "Don't worry Feyre, I had no idea what I was doing either. Right before the summit, I received a long lecture from my team of midwives on what to expect and how to care for her properly. I'm sure your healer is preparing to give you the same lesson."
I cringed. "She did say that starting at my next appointment she would be bringing along the midwife, her sister, now that I'm in the final weeks."
"Then you still have plenty of time to learn," she said. "How are you feeling?"
I sighed again as I rested against the settee. "Still tired. I'm hungry almost every hour of the day, and my back is unbelievably sore by the end of the night."
She smiled empathetically. "Are you feeling more movements from him?"
I nodded. "All the time. He's very...energetic these days, especially when Rhys is in the room, which is often. He loves to kick and stretch," I rubbed a spot on my belly for emphasis. "He used to take naps, I think, but in the last week I'm pretty sure he's decided that he won't sleep again until he's born."
Her answering laugh was melodic, Eira's stunning blue eyes fluttering open in response to the sound. "He probably won't sleep then either. Kallias and I are lucky if we get a couple of hours now; it's gotten better in the last month, but at first it's rough adapting to her schedule."
I gulped as I stared at my stomach, wondering if Rhys and I would be tormented by lack of sleep. "I don't mean to scare you," Viviane giggled. "It just takes some time to become accustomed to a youngling that's all. Once you actually see him, hold him, and nurse him...your world will revolve around him." She explained, pulling Eira away from her breast and adjusting her top expertly before scooping the youngling back up into her arms as she patted her back gently.
I laughed as that patting elicited the tiniest burp I had ever heard. "I'm assuming that's part of the nursing process?"
Viviane nodded, "Oh yes. These little ones tend to get gassy, so we help them along."
I paused for a moment as I watched her kiss Eira's cheek, cradling her close, and I imagined how in only a matter of months I would be doing the same with my son.
"Since you're here...I know you said as much in your letters...but how bad is it really? Labor?" I asked timidly.
She smiled sheepishly before contemplating how to answer me. I knew the last thing she wanted to do was instill fear in me, but I also knew she would be honest.
"I'll tell you what my midwives told me: every female's experience is different. Just as our pregnancies might differ, so will our labor's. For me, while my cycles are less than pleasant and always excruciating, I managed to find a way to alleviate the pains over the centuries. Because of that, I thought my labor would be...manageable. Unfortunately, I was wrong. It was...the hardest thing I had to endure. The pain left me...disconnected, in some way," she paused as the memories came back to her. "But Kallias was there the whole time. He kept me grounded and helped me through it all to the very end. I don't know what I would've done without him,"
She reached over to grip my hand gently. "But Feyre, you shouldn't be scared. Your mate, your Rhysand, will be there with you every step of the way too. I've seen the bond between you two, the love you share, and I have no doubt that he'll guide you through it all no matter how smooth or brutal the process might be. Who knows, maybe with his daemati abilities he couldâŠ"
I shook my head. "I don't want him to numb me. I...I want to be able to go through it as every female has for centuries. His mother endured it twice, and I figure if she could do it, if you could, then so can I."
"Of course, Feyre, if that's what you want. You do whatever is right for you," she affirmed. "In all honesty though, with Rhysand at your side you have nothing to worry about, and at the end of it all you'll welcome your son into a safe home."
I squeezed her hand, "I hope so," I admitted. I didn't have to reiterate how unsettled the coup, the very reason why she and our other allies were gathered in Velaris, left me.
She, as a new mother herself, understood perfectly. "You will," she promised. "And then you'll get to hold your beautiful boy. Have you wondered what he might look like yet?"
The image of the Bone Carver came to mind. Of those violet-blue eyes that nearly resembled mine, while all his other features were completely and utterly Rhysand.
"He'll look like Rhysand, I just know it." I said as I caressed my stomach lovingly, earning a glimmer and kick in response.
Viviane warmed as she looked at Eira, who now peacefully slept in her arms. "I was so glad when I saw that she had Kallias's eyes. I had a feeling that with my lineage she would look like me, but I still hoped she might look at least a little like Kallias. She has his spirit too, at least so far," she smiled as she smoothed the hair on the younglings head. "And Kallias, he dotes on her so much already. She hardly cries; all she has to do is wrinkle her little brow and he scoops her up."
"They say you can't spoil them at this age, but I'm sure he will as the years go on," she said.
"As I should," came her mate's voice as he walked in the room with Rhysand at his side.
My mate winked at me as he entered the room, crossing over to my side at the same time as Kallias came to Viviane's.
"I doubt our friends in the Night Court will be any different, especially with their brood." Kallias said with a smirk at me, before checking on his sleeping daughter. I noticed his fingers twitch, as if he might pick her up, but Viviane's hold was unrelenting.
"Viviane's maternal instincts are very...formidable." Kallias suddenly said, realizing my mate and I must have noticed that he hadn't held his daughter at all since their arrival. "The midwives warned us that it relates to our primitive ways; that females tend to be overprotective of their younglings for the first few months."
I blinked, and Viviane smiled sheepishly. "Back at home I don't have a hard time letting him hold and change her, but I think it's because of the change in environment now that I'm struggling."
Rhys and I exchanged an astonished look and I shrugged. "Well at least you know I won't be purposefully refusing to let you hold our son," I offered.
He smirked. "Poor Mor will be doubly disappointed, as will everyone else."
"It'll only really be intense the first week, for both of you actually," Viviane said. "The mating bond will make you both sensitive to outside influence, similar to when the bond first clicked into place."
Kallias shifted uncomfortably at the mention of something so intimate, but Rhys nodded in understanding. "We'll be in the Cabin for the duration of Feyre's recovery, so that should help."
I nodded. "The Cabin is also where you, my sisters, and I will be going...when that time comes."
"Are there any updates on that end?" Kallias asked, and I wondered what he and Rhys had been discussing in the other room if not about the business of ending the coup. "What did Eris's last report say?"
"He's managed to keep Keir at bay, hashing out details and negotiations for their supposed alliance and dragging them out for as long as he's needed to replenish the armies affected by their fighting," Rhys began. "According to his latest report, we should be expecting his soldiers any day now, along with Tamlin's."
"And then?" Viviane asked, holding Eira impossibly closer.
"Then we will lift the wards on our numbers, and have them march on the Ironcrest camp," Rhys started.
"Where that coward, Kallon, will inform Keir, and summon him here?" Kallias finished.
Rhys nodded. "Then we put an end to this for good."
I shivered at the darkness that laced in the promise of his words, and he quickly placed a comforting hand on my shoulder.
"What will you do with them?" Viviane quietly asked.
"Rhys, Cassian, and Azriel will deal with the Illyrians. As for Keir, we'll be handing him over to Mor. She's free to do as she wishes with him" I answered. Viviane nodded in approval, knowing the history and relationship our friend had with both her parents.
"Are you sure we can trust all of this in Eris's hands?" Kallias asked, his demeanor having shifted to a harder one.
"Azriel is keeping a close watch with his network of spies," I answered for Rhys.
"Not to mention with his court being in such shambles, entering another war against all of us, would be an extremely foolish move on his end," my mate added.
I scoffed. "Plus, he's probably enjoying his new position too much to risk losing it."
Our friends shared a wary glance, their eyes conveying their own silent exchange. "We trust you," Viviane finally said, adjusting Eira in her arms.
Rhys dipped his head in acknowledgement before turning to Kallias. "We'll ensure Viviane and Eira are safe with Feyre and her sisters in the cabin. Since the attack on Velaris we've set up stronger wards on all our properties."
Kallias's tense shoulders seemed to relax a bit at Rhys's reassurance for his daughter and Viviane's safety.
"I guess this time around you two will have to do without us." Viviane joked half-heartedly, though I could tell she harbored the same desire I had to do more for this fight.
You are doing plenty, my love, I promise you, Rhys said through the bond.
By that you mean carrying Sebastian? I mused back.
That is the most important thing right now, and more than I could have ever asked for.
I smiled at him, squeezing the hand on my shoulder, but we both looked up as a knock came from the sitting room. I saw Viviane flinch, bringing Eira close again.
"It's just Mor," Rhys reassured before waving a hand, opening the door for her.
Viviane smiled sheepishly at me as Mor entered the room. The blonde brightened when she saw her friend, but wisely didn't rush over to embrace her after noticing how protectively she held her child.
"Sorry to interrupt, I know you wanted to wait to greet the rest of us at dinner," Mor said empathetically to Viviane and Kallias. "But Azriel's spies returned from the Autumn Court with a report from Eris," she said to Rhysand and I.
"What did it say?" I asked, my heart beating faster.
"He's finalized his 'plans' with Keir, and his soldiers just arrived at Windhaven," she replied, her dark eyes hardening.
"What about the troops Spring promised?" Rhys asked, voice equally serious-his dark shadows beginning to stir.
I noticed the room growing colder as Kallias's own powers stirred at the news. "Cassian reported they're set to arrive at dawn," Mor said.
"So, it's time then, to lift the wards?" I askedâmy words coming out more tense than I meant.
Rhys nodded stiffly. "As soon as the Spring soldiers arrive, we'll lift the wards. Keir and Kallon will surely meet us once we arrive at the Ironcrest camp."
"How long will that take, approximately?" Kallias asked, moving closer to his wife and mate-who rested her cheek atop Eira's head, still swaddled and sleeping in her arms.
"A day or two, at the most," Rhys answered.
We all exchanged the same strained, knowing, look and I wondered if they could hear the pounding of my heart as it settled over me that the time for this ill-fated encounter was at last about to reach its conclusion.

Series masterlist
Summary: Ben and (Y/n) havenât been together long when they find out their pregnant. But (Y/n) fears sheâll lose the baby after suffering miscarriages before with her ex, Gwilym who is making things complicated.
Enjoy.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Do you think she'll be happy?" (Y/n)'s voice was quiet and her eyes were half closed to try and rid herself of the headache forming behind her eyes that was trying to dampen her ecstatic mood.
(Y/n) had the urge to lean her head against the window to see if the cool glass would alleviate her headache but instead she turned her head to the right so she could look over at Ben. His eyes drifted from the road for a few seconds to look her way, a gentle yet somehow cheeky smile on his lips.
"I think she'll cry, she's an emotional person." The way Ben spoke showed (Y/n) that it wasn't a bad thing if his mother did end up crying, it was a normality for Ben to see his mother start to weep when she was beyond happy, even more so than when she was upset.
"Are you happy?" (Y/n) already knew the answer to her question but she thought she would ask him anyway. They had gone to a scan today and they were able to find out if they were having a baby boy or a girl. (Y/n) knew that this was almost definitely the only child she was ever going to have, this was a miracle baby and it meant she wouldn't have a boy and a girl, just one or the other. (Y/n) had no preference what gender their baby was, she could see herself with a boy or a girl.
But (Y/n) didn't know about Ben or his mother. This was going to be Ben's mother's first grandchild and she seemed like the kind of woman who thought about these things very deeply and fantasised and planned them out. As for Ben, if their relationship lasted he was only going to have one child and (Y/n) knew he was the kind of person who would want more kids. She didn't know if Ben had his heart set on a boy or a girl.
"Are you kidding? I've just found out I'm gonna have a baby girl to spoil, happy doesn't even cover it, sweetheart."
Ben gently took one of (Y/n)'s hands in his own, catching sight of the scan photo that was resting in her other hand. It didn't matter to Ben if they had a boy or a girl but finding out today that they were having a girl made everything seem so real and it made Ben's heart feel like it was exploding in his chest. He could already see himself with a baby girl, he was imagining what colour her hair would be, what kind of eyes she would have, if she would look more like him or be a double of (Y/n).
Ben was happy about this and he knew once they told his mum she was having a granddaughter, the flood banks would open and she would be crying tears of happiness.
"It's just... having her is like winning the lottery for me. I don't know if there is something wrong with me that means having a baby is hard, but I don't think I'd ever take the risk again after we have her."
(Y/n) put the scan picture back in her bag before she leaned back in her seat and slowly started to dance her hands over her stomach. Deep down, (Y/n) always felt that despite the doctors not finding anything, there had to be a reason that up until now, she couldn't get a baby past fourteen weeks. It was too much of a coincidence that six times she'd lost all of her babies. Now they were having their girl, this was a miracle (Y/n) truly wasn't expecting and even if this worked out, she couldn't try again.
This was the only baby (Y/n) was going to have because despite the fact that she would love more than one child, it was a risk she couldn't take. Each time she miscarried the stakes got higher and the effects got worse, trying again for another baby would be a huge risk and (Y/n) didn't want to put herself through any pain or turmoil again when she would already have a baby of her own.
"Sweetheart, truthfully I don't want you to get pregnant again, not when we both know how it could turn out. Our one and only girl is gonna be perfect."
If Ben had known how badly (Y/n)'s miscarriages had gone, they wouldn't be here having their girl now because he would have taken the precautions to make sure (Y/n) wouldn't get pregnant. He wouldn't want to put her at risk like that but after their girl, Ben didn't want to have another baby. He couldn't bare the thought of trying again and seeing (Y/n) lose the baby or see her health deteriorate or find her unconscious and bleeding like Gwilym found her.
He wasn't putting (Y/n)'s health and life at risk, they were having a baby girl and that was it and their family would be perfect and complete with just the three of them.
(Y/n) let her eyes fall closed as the radio hummed in the background like it was trying to soothe her headache. They were at twenty-one weeks now so they had just about four months left before they got to meet their daughter and that knowledge was unrealistic to (Y/n).
They could actually start buying things for the baby now, (Y/n) had never gotten to the stage where she could think about buying things and not worry that something was going to go wrong. The midwife said that their girl was fine, her heartbeat was fine and she was growing at the normal rate, there was nothing to suggest that anything would go wrong and even though (Y/n) was still a bit paranoid, she was much calmer than she thought she would be.
(Y/n) felt her stomach jumping when Ben pulled up outside his parent's house. She'd only met his parents twice and the first time was to tell them that she and Ben were expecting a baby, that had been more than nerve-wracking for (Y/n). It was so different with Gwilym's mother because she and (Y/n) got along, they had known each other for just over a year before her and Gwilym had to tell her that they were expecting a baby each time around. (Y/n) felt comfortable around her.
With Ben's mother it was more intimidating because she was getting to know her whilst she was pregnant, she was being thrown in at the deep end and being told to swim on her own.
Ben's mother was so kind and welcoming and (Y/n) could tell they were going to get along just fine, but it was working towards getting comfortable and getting to know her that was making (Y/n) nervous.
"Still have a headache?" Ben asked gently when they got out of the car and started walking up the drive.
"Not as bad, I'm okay." Reaching out, (Y/n) tangled her hand with Ben's when he got out his keys and unlocked the door, calling out to his parents as they walked inside. (Y/n) felt like she was walking into an exam hall, desperate to get all the answers right and make no mistakes or slip-ups. But she could also feel her stomach tingling with excitement at the thought of telling Jessica that she was going to have a granddaughter.
"You're here, how'd it go? What do we have, a boy or a girl?" Jessica headed out of the kitchen and hurried down the hall until she could wrap Ben up in a hug, having to pull him down to her due to the height difference. When she released Ben from her grasp, she turned to (Y/n) and pulled her in for a loving but gentle hug.
"Mum, we just got through the door. Can we at least sit down first?" Ben rested his hand on his mother's shoulder before looking towards the living room. He'd barely shut the door behind them both before his mother came in with her burning questions, it would be nice to sit down and tell her rather than rush to give her the answers right here in the hallway.
His mother sighed, pursing her lips before she nodded, beckoning them to follow her into the living room where James, Ben's father was sitting on the armchair in the bay window, smiling anxiously.
Ben sat down on the sofa and gently tugged on (Y/n)'s hand, pulling her down to sit next to him as his mother sat down on the chair that was next to Ben near to the door. He could feel his mother's eyes intensely watching him, waiting for them to tell her anything and everything about the scan today and Ben could already sense the smile on her face.
"It went well, everything's fine... we're going to have a baby girl." Ben smiled when (Y/n) handed him the scan photo which he passed over to his mum who was almost shaking and her smile widened to the point it must have hurt.
"Oh, that's so lovely! James, our first granddaughter." Jessica handed the photo over to James who didn't have enough words to form a sentence so he just smiled, brushing the tears from the corners of his eyes.
When (Y/n) notice the tears falling from Jessica's eyes she patted Ben's thigh lightly, silently telling him that he was right in his assumptions that his mother would be sobbing. The sight made something burn in (Y/n)'s chest but it wasn't really a bad feeling, it was a mix between joy and heartache. (Y/n) had never been able to give this kind of news to Audrey when she and Gwilym were expecting. They'd never gone round to her house and said she was having a grandson or a granddaughter, the most they had ever done was simply to tell her they were expecting a baby that never made it.
(Y/n) liked the atmosphere this kind of news created and the smiles it brought to Ben's parent's faces but it was foreign territory for her.
When (Y/n) leaned her head on his shoulder, Ben turned his head to look at her and when he noticed she was trying not to cry he immediately seemed to understand what was going through her mind. He pressed his lips to her forehead, smiling when her free hand wrapped around his upper arm like she was gluing herself to his side.
"Have you thought of any names yet?"
"Not yet, do you have any suggestions?" (Y/n) leaned around Ben to look at Jessica who looked like she was brimming with suggestions.
Half of the names she suggested washed over Ben's head and the ones he really didn't like he just laughed at but some of them started to stick in (Y/n)'s mind and she filed them away for later reference.
(Y/n) brushed the back of her hand under her nose but when she pulled her hand back and noticed a streak of blood. Her lips pursed as she looked down at her bag resting at her feet and rummaged around until she found a tissue. She hoped Ben's parents didn't realise, she didn't want to make a scene but when she looked over at them they didn't seem to realise, they were still running through names and talking about when the baby would be due.
(Y/n) didn't have nosebleeds very often but during this pregnancy she'd had more nosebleeds than she ever had in her entire life. The midwife kept reassuring her it was normal due to the different hormones and the imbalance in hormones due to the baby but (Y/n) didn't like this side effect. It meant she had to stuff loads of tissues into her bag whenever she went out in case this happened.
Pulling back the tissue, (Y/n) grimaced at seeing how much blood was soaking into the tissue. She scrunched up the tissue and pressed it back to her nose but (Y/n) could feel her heart picking up speed when she could feel the blood soaking through the tissue and onto her hand.
"Um... excuse me..." (Y/n) pressed her hand tighter to her nose before she stood up and walked out of the room.
Looking around, (Y/n) decided to head for the kitchen rather than drag herself upstairs to get to the bathroom. When she reached the sink she dropped the tissue into the sterling silver basin before she reached over to turn on the tap. Leaning over the sink, (Y/n) tipped her head down and tried breathing through her mouth as she watched the large droplets of blood jump into the sink and merge with the running water.
"Baby, you okay?"
"I'm fine, just a little nosebleed." (Y/n) waved her hand to try and get Ben to go back to his parents but she could hear him approaching her. "Ben I-I'm okay, it's stopping-"
"Let me see." Ben gently turned (Y/n) until she was facing him, her head ducked down a little to stop the blood from going down the back of her throat but when Ben pressed his finger under her chin and leaned down to look at her, his lips curled in distaste at the blood. (Y/n) looked like some kind of vampire. "Shit, alright come here."
Ben bit his lip, pressing his lips into a thin line when he saw the amount of blood streaking down her lips and chin. He grabbed a cloth and ran it under the tap before swiping at (Y/n)'s hands to clean the blood from them.
"Pinch the bridge of your nose, head back over the sink." (Y/n) did as instructed, feeling the headache both alleviating yet getting worse when the blood just wouldn't stop. Ben pulled back for a moment when (Y/n) spat the blood from her mouth into the sink, coughing whilst trying not to gag from the horrid feeling.
Ben ran the cloth under the tap again before gently wiping at (Y/n)'s mouth and chin so he could tell how badly the bleeding was and when it would eventually stop. He rung the cloth out before turning the tap so the water was as cold as it could be and when the cloth was wet, he pressed it to (Y/n)'s nose, hoping the cold water would help to ease the bleeding. His stomach tensed when Ben pulled back and turned around so she was leaning over the sink again. She rested her arms around the edge of the sink and dipped her head down that felt like it was going to explode.
(Y/n) spat what little of the blood was still in her mouth before rubbing her hands together under the water. She hated having any cuts or scrapes because she hated blood on her, every spec of the substance had to be scrubbed off her skin until it was gone.
"Do you need to sit down?" Ben gently pulled the cloth from her nose when he figured the bleeding was slowing down now whilst his other hand gently brushed over the side of her face. He could see the discomfort on her features and she looked like she didn't feel too good. Her headache was most likely getting worse after that blood loss.
When (Y/n) nodded, Ben guided her over to the kitchen table but he stopped when a whimper escaped (Y/n)'s lips. Ben barely had chance to look down at her to see what was wrong before her head fell into his shoulder and her knees gave way.
"(Y/n)? Oh fuck." Ben sighed through the words when he realised that she'd fainted on him. Moving his arms quickly, Ben kept one arm around (Y/n)'s back and the other under her legs, holding her tightly as he slowly went down on his knees, guiding her with him until she was leaning up against him. "Baby, what am I going to do with you?"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
"Baby, did you have another nosebleed?" Ben threw some tissue into the bathroom bin, grimacing at the thought of (Y/n) having another nosebleed that compared to the one she had at his parent's house last week. She'd already had a very small nosebleed again and Ben hadn't known her to have two in a day. But there were used bloodied tissues in the bin so it was a sure sign and when he looked in the sink he could see small dashes of blood speckled around the basin.
When he didn't get a response, Ben dragged his hand through his loose curls before he turned and headed out of the bathroom. As Ben passed the bedroom he leaned in to see if (Y/n) was in there and smiled when he saw she was.
Ben walked into the room but the smile on his lips faltered when he looked at (Y/n) properly. She was sitting in the middle of the bed with the tv on in the background, she had her legs crossed beneath her and her hands resting on her stomach. Ben could see a small smudge of blood under her nose telling him the nosebleed had happened recently but there were tears in her eyes which were worrying him.
"Baby, what's up?" Ben sat down on the bed with her, leaning his weight back onto his right hand as his left hand rubbed over her leg.
He couldn't work out why she was crying, she wasn't in floods of tears and she didn't look terribly upset or panicked but there was definitely something the matter. He brushed his thumb over her thigh, trying to coax her to tell him what was wrong.
Ben smiled when (Y/n)'s eyes met his own and there was curiosity in his eyes when (Y/n) reached for his hand that was on her thigh. She held his hand with quite a bit of force that took him by surprise but he was more stunned by her actions when she pulled him closer so that she could press his hand against the side of her stomach. Ben rose his brows, waiting silently for something to happen but his mouth went agape when he felt a kick against the palm of his hand.
No words passed between either of them for a few moments as they waited for the kicking to subside and disappear but when Ben looked back up at (Y/n), tears were falling quicker from her eyes.
"I- I've never felt a baby move or kick before." (Y/n) tightened her hand around Ben's that was still pressed against her stomach despite the kicking having now stopped.
(Y/n) had never gotten to the point of feeling the baby wriggling and moving around and she'd never felt a baby kicking before but it made her heart speed up until she was sure her heart was going to explode. She'd always wondered what it would feel like and (Y/n) had wished to get to this point, it showed her that she was doing something right and that their baby girl was okay.
"You've got another four months of her doing that." Ben's words made (Y/n) smile before she let go of his hand so she could cup his face and lean forward to press a kiss to his lips.

***The Top 10 Rap Albums/Projects of 2019*** are...
At the end of the decade, the rap music genre finds itself with a more splintered and diverse fanbase than ever before. What did that mean for 2019? A push towards different styles which was balanced out by a strong grassroots revival of jazzy, soul-inspired sounds that echoed back to the heyday of the mid-to-late 90âČs underground hip-hop scene.Â
In 2019, the lanes that travel more closely to what most would consider âmainstreamâ rap, struggled to find new inspiration without as much artistic direction to act as a template. This created a bit of a hole for some, as the absence of new material from Kendrick Lamar or Isaiah Rashad, or the disappointing reception to highly anticipated releases from the likes of Chance The Rapper, Schoolboy Q or Kanye West, left the gate open just wide enough to allow more Young Thug disciples, more aspiring Futures, and more cookie cutter âwant to be the next Drakesâ to flood your streaming platform.
But let us be clear: 2019 was still a great year for rap music because the underground feasted. Scroll further, and you will see that point made by my list of the best rap projects released in 2019 (and in some cases, releases that are amongst the decades best). I used the following criteria for this yearâs list:
- the album/mixtape/EP/project/WHATEVER you want to call it had to be released by Dec. 20th, 2019 (arguably still way too soon to craft a well-informed review of an artistsâ project)
- the project must have at least 6 songs (arguably still too small of a sample size to compare to lengthier projects)
- these rankings are a *combination* of my own personal preference, overall quality, and how the final product compares to other work from the artistsâ peers that occupy the same lane/âsub-genreâ of rap music
Regardless of how you feel about this list, I hope that you visit (or re-visit) any one of these pieces of strong work and find the same level of enjoyment that I did. I loved so much rap music this year and I could not be more excited about what the future holds. On a personal note, in 2019 I found myself even more in love with my wife, feeling luckier than I have in a long time, more satisfied with my hobbies and passions, and above all else, more in awe of my child (and anyone that ever raised a child) than ever before. I became a father for the first time in 2019, so as my baby daughter continues to fill my heart, I am beginning to wonder what she will think of her fatherâs love for this art form that has brought him so much joy over the years...I suppose time will tell.
Salute to these artists below and so many, many others. đđđ
Much love to all,
Jason, THE Rap Pundit
10. It Wasnât Even Close - Your Old Droog
Your Old Droog is a unique, stand alone artist - I want to make that larger point perfectly clear - but after I finished listening to Droogâs trio of terrific projects in 2019, and sat down to right this blurb, on It Wasnât Even Close, I thought of three people (and not the one you think Iâm going to say!): Royce Da 5âČ9âł, MF DOOM, and Joe Pesci in Goodfellas.
I thought of Royce because more than any other artists, I think Royce and Droog both get dismissed as âpunchline rappersâ because of their punchline-heavy rhyme styles, but both make incredibly personal, perspective-driven music (not their fault youâre not listening closely enough). I also thought of DOOM because YOD is able to create an insular rap world with his projects that incorporate fantastic production ranging from off-the-wall to bleak as hell, paired with hard rhymes that can be both dope af and laugh out loud funny - but without the gunplay and drug dealer talk. And why Pesci?? Because itâs not always clear when Droog is going to come off with a well crafted joke, or a painful reveal of the dark thoughts behind the man...but that is what makes him such a compelling MC.
Of his three 2019 albums (Jewelry is not being acknowledged here because in the holiday shuffle I havenât had any time to sit with it yet, but I like what I have heard thus far), the transportation themed and appropriately titled Transportation might show the most range as a song-maker, but itâs the relentless thump of It Wasnât Even Close that lands a top 10 spot on my list. His recent work with Mach-Hommy seems to foster a free-wielding spirit in Droog, from surprise project releases to unpredictable themes. The bars come in great abundance throughout IWEC, and most of the finest moments from Droog come when he his dropping brilliant one-liners over production that does indeed point to the world being about to end (perhaps all too appropriate for the bizarre news feed that was 2019).Â
Your Old Droog has too much to say, too many thoughts to simply dumb down his lyrical content to create a focused song that just addresses one singular idea, so he makes the right choice on It Wasnât Even Close to touch on as many of his manic thoughts as possible. Droog is like a great stand-up comedian that knows his audience and will do whatever he wants with his material because he knows that is one of the things that keeps his audience coming back, but within each joke is a revealing kernel of truth that should be taken seriously. Because whether you see it on stage or not, working stand-up comedians often dedicate themselves to comedy because there is no other way to harness all of the fast moving, often dark and uncomfortable thoughts in their head. I canât say if thatâs the case with Your Old Droog, but he is certainly an artist that raps with the sense of humor - and unexpectedly deep thinking - of a great stand-up.
9. Guns - Quelle Chris
Circling back to my comment about 2019âČs depressing news cycle in the above Your Old Droog post (canât be a coincidence, given that Quelle, Droog and Hommy are all frequent collaborators), can you think of a more to-the-point and overdue rap album title for this moment in Americaâs history than Guns?
Quelle Chris can stake a claim as having one of the greatest under-appreciated catalogues in rap history. The gifted rapper and producer has blessed us with many great projects over the years, and he tends to excel at making a point without sacrificing the enjoyment factor of his music. Much like last yearâs Everythingâs Fine (his brilliant collaboration with fellow dope artist and wife Jean Grae), itâs his use of satire on Guns that prevents the project from dipping a toe too deeply into the gloom of the subject matter. Guns is a wonderfully scored portrait of how the United Statesâ connection to violence fosters increasingly more violence, and the symbiotic relationship between violence and the tools that wield it. Quelle is not a gangsta rapper, and he does not support violence, but as a black man in this country and a rapper, he is pulled into a wide set of false assumptions. An artist like Quelle doesnât avoid false assumptions or challenging subjects, he tackles them with a great deal of thought and care. Sure, Guns has some light-hearted moments, but at the rate that people are being shot and killed by guns in this country (especially the rate of black men and women, as wells as members of other minority groups), a successful satire is often one that leaves the audience sitting in reflective silence rather than uproarious laughter.
8. Hitler Wears Hermes 7 [HWH7] - Westside Gunn
2019 was such a triumph for Griselda Recordsâ journey of doubling down on their sound rather than adapting, and reaching even higher profile success by doing so. While providing less controversial cover art on the 7th installment of his Hitler Wears Hermes series may be seen as a bit of a (increasingly necessary) compromise, the collective continues to sustain a steadily growing fanbase by keeping their music honest and gritty.
While not as grounded in the traditional as Westside Gunnâs FLYGOD, HWH7 provides a highly satisfying glimpse into the world of Griselda's impresario, the best example since Supreme Blientele. That means an indulgent dose of dusty soul samples, fashion trends, wrestling references, impeccable guest verses, and a general sense of fun-loving mayhem that could only be characterized by a representative of a shining underdog of a city with a scrappy chip on its' shoulder like Buffalo. Anyone that knows Buffalo New York knows that it's a city as filled with love as it is cold during frequently brutal winters. That's the type of town needed to shape a raw diamond like Gunn, who is as unpredictable with his rap cadence as he is respectful of the great MCs around him.
Westside Gunn and the whole Griselda gang provide a vibe that brings the best out of even the most experienced rap veterans (for example, I havenât heard Fat Joe rap this well in years). Whatever their secret recipe for success has been (besides a relentless hustle and fresh talent), Hitler Wears Hermes 7 is another great example of how the collectiveâs energy is so contagious that established artists are eager to fall in line with their vision, Griselda doesnât adapt to their guests. And can we finally end this ridiculous notion that Westside Gunn isnât a dope MC in his own right? Donât let the sharp rhyme skills of Conway and Benny distract from the fact that Gunn brings a real outside the box approach to how he attacks a beat, heâs as fly with his word choice as his fashion rep.
7. Eve - Rapsody
Rapsody is a great rapper.
Not a great âfemale MCâ, not a âgood for a womanâ rapper...so knock off that bullshit right now, itâs 2019 people (well, technically 2020 - but I meant to finish this whole post before the ball dropped, but I dropped the ball). :-/
Rapsody has been an underground darling for so long that I am not sure if you can technically refer to her as underground hip-hop artist anymore? Check the discography and you will see that the North Carolinian has quite an impressive list of good projects to her name - all of which helped build the revere that her peers feel towards her when they say her name. While she did not ask for cult status, she certainly inherited cult status as the MC that snippy underground heads like to point to whenever they feel like Nicki Minaj or Cardi B are receiving too much too soon. Of course this sentiment is completely unwarranted - and almost always driven by angst against a fanbase rather than the more famous artist his/herself - but it doesnât stop the conversation from coming up again and again...so why doesnât Rapsody have more mainstream success? Should she be mentioned in more conversations as one of the best rappers in the game? And should she be receiving more credit as a woman in a male-dominated genre of music that managed to build a fanbase without pumping more graphic sexuality into her music, or showing off her body?
Well, all the answers to these questions snake up to the same problem, because apart from gender, Rapsody, Nicki, Cardi, and Megan The Stallion all share something else in common: theyâre all just trying to get their piece of the pie in a sexist industry (more like society - but thatâs a much larger convo) and itâs 100% not their fault. Please try to understand that Rapsody is going to do what she does on a record, and Nicki will do the same, and to expect either artist to do the same type of record is as absurd as expecting Conway The Machine to make a Drake album. Whatever your gender identity may be, you are entitled to craft your sound to be as mainstream or underground as you want it to be, just do you.
So in a way, it would make sense that Rapsody would drop the best album of her career in a year where the mainstream rap scene was shallow, mostly unremarkable, and full of holes. Iâm not at all saying that thatâs the reason why she received more press off of Eve than on most of her previous works, but in a rare twist, industry trends did provide a bit of an assist in the publicity department. However, the acclaim for Eve has less to do with industry trends, and a lot to do with just how good the music is on this album.Â
Eve is a celebration of black women, but not as a âladies night at the barâ, one time only rap album gimmick, but as a personal and informative album where every track is named after an influential woman of color, and the star of the album just happens to be a black woman that also hopes to be remembered as an influential woman of color. Eve is as much a braggadocious claim for respect from a dope MC as it is a humble diary of a veteran rap artist thatâs still very much in her prime. The production choices range from intentional reinterpretations of the familiar, to fresh takes that successfully ride the line between what we would traditionally call âmainstreamâ or âundergroundâ. At the end of the day, Rapsodyâs Eve manages to start a conversation about the importance of black women in the history of the world, but while filling in the details with reminders that she deserves the respect of being treated as just another great MC.
6. Zuu - Denzel Curry
There may not be a more important album reflecting the sound of a specific city in 2019 than Denzel Curryâs Zuu.
His ode to the Carol City neighborhood of Miami, Florida was a long time coming. Zuu would not have been possible had he not experimented with different approaches in the past. He has dabbled in the same woozy, screaming raves of his fellow Floridian peers, and flirted with expressionism (especially on his previous album, TA13OO), but it all really came together on Zuu. A loose, more casual approach to song crafting on this album built a city on a clean slate. Much in the same way that Juvenile and Mannie Freshâs âHaâ painted as vivid a picture of the feeling of being in the Magnolia projects of New Orelans as any city homage in rap history, Denzel Curry deserves a ton of credit for collaborating with perfectly selected producers to capture a sound that feels as sweltering as Curryâs place of origin.
While Zuu could stand on atmosphere alone, Curry is also at his best as a MC on this album. His pen is hard at work here (even though he claimed this album did not come with much actual writing), and he showcases a control over his flow and a charisma that proves that he is a stand alone artist to stay glued to moving forward. While the production aesthetic may be providing the broad strokes of color, his lyrics are adding the finer details throughout, discussing his fatherâs life and in general, the anxiety of growing up in a Miami neighborhood where sunny days are never promised. Zuu is a great album start to finish.
5. Marcielago - Roc Marciano
Roc didn't technically *need* to drop an album this year. His 2018 was one of the most prolific in his career, and for his increasingly less niche core fanbase, the impact on his respective lane is crystal clear, be it by open shout-out from his peers, to more subliminal homages. But it's that last point that inspires Roc Marciano to suit up and dramatically emerge from the gate every year or two. He has that Jordan/Jay-Z gene that suggests that no matter how many accolades are racked up over the years, any internet troll has the potential to get Roc's blood up. Which is why it should come as no surprise by this point that the man that gave us Marcberg, Reloaded and a stack of other revered projects, still felt the need to remind his "sons" that he is one of the Masters of his art form.
As an exercise in word choice and turn of phrase, Marcielago is more of a flex than an attempt to push new boundaries. But as a display of Roc Marci's (somehow) still understated skill as a producer, it's so much more - possibly his best work behind the boards. While less experimental with his production choices than on his acclaimed Rosebudd projects, Marcielago finds Roc doubling down on his ability to color within the lines of a gritty, soulful soundtrack to a world of seductive criminal activity, occasionally swerving outside of the lines with great intention, like a record skip, reminding the listener that this world is part autobiography, part fantasy - but the imagination of the man at the center is scary real. The piano sample alone on "I.G.W.T." is enough to provoke a smokey zone out, and the beat switches on that track as well as others (such as "Tom Chambers") are captivating because the switch-ups drive focus, not a choice derived from an overindulgence in production or onset boredom.
Many rap artists can claim to have made a great impact on their respective lane of traffic, but not many can claim that they paved their own. Roc did not invent the New York underground sound by any means, but when most of the New York crew abandoned ship, the captain stuck with it. â
4. The Plugs I Met - Benny The Butcher
Let's make this perfectly clear: Griselda Records has been dope af for years now, and nothing changed about their game plan in 2019 except that they had significantly more press to help continue pushing their brand forward. That press helped them put a ribbon around a tremendous year of music for them, along with a rapidly growing bandwagon of websites and online influencers that were previously asleep at the wheel.
That all being said...in 2019, the rap world really learned about Benny The Butcher. The Buffalo lyricist and Griselda & BSF rap capo has been spitting for years now, but word has finally reached his peers that he is pretty close to untouchable when it comes to this game called rap. Benny took things to another level with his short but potent dose of an album, The Plugs I Met. Much like Pusha T (an appropriate guest here on â18 Wheelerâ), please do not dismiss Benny as just another street hustler rapping about cocaine dealing. Itâs not the subject matter thatâs special here, itâs the attention to detail. Bennyâs ability to describe the life he leads/has lead, and what he has been through with his writing is nothing short of brilliant, and he is able to rattle off astute observations/descriptions with his rhymes about the world he knows at a level that I would only compare to B.I.G., Nas, Jay-Z, Kool G Rap, Push, Beanie Sigel, and other legendary MCâs that have a unique way with words when it comes to tales of crime life.
But what more can I say about Benny the rapper/warrior poet that I havenât been saying for years? ¯\_(ă)_/ÂŻ

3. We Grown Now - Tree
Tree is a legend. If heâs not a legend in the conversations you are currently having about the best rap projects of 2019, then you need to remedy that. Perhaps you can downgrade him to âjustâ a Chicago legend, but I would disagree on the grounds that musically, heâs a legend when it comes to who he is as a rap artist, and I donât really care that this album isnât on anyone elseâs top best of lists, itâs AOTY worthy material...
Tree is a veteran rapper/producer that seems to have a love-hate relationship with the rap business (well, maybe itâs strictly hate when it comes to rap as a business, but he raps with too much conviction for me to believe that he doesnât love rapping - even when heâs jaded by it all). Why he isnât heralded as an icon across every rap website today isnât exactly clear to me (and I have already made too many assumptions on the intents of the artists on this list), but after being in a bit of a slumber, the purveyor of âsoul trapâ seemed to rise high once again in 2019, striking his fanbase with numerous projects that read as autobiographical diaries, including a dope collaboration with Vic Spencer, producer Parallel Thought, and this amazing album, We Grown Now.
Whether itâs attempting to find closure from fallen friendships, an ode to his sons, a declaration of his love for travel, or an olive branch to the past loves of his life, Tree touched on so many personal moments on his work in 2019 that itâs hard not to think that itâs all part of his final victory lap. It feels that way because Tree comes across as an old Blues man at heart, his greatest works of art often his most painful ones. While he may travel outside of music to get away from it all, put a mic, beat and writing pad in front of him, and he puts himself out there, warts and all. Give this one a spin in the New Year if you missed out:

2. Retropolitan - Skyzoo & Pete Rock
The definition of a dope New York album with no skips. Skyzoo shows that one can revel in nostalgia and positivity at the same time, that reflecting on how your home has changed can be a loving experience, even when it's clear that you would love to turn back the clock to an older, impactful time of your life.Â
Retropolitan is the sound of a music Mecca that thrives today because of its' past, and even when you don't hear that sound of the city within the city walls as often as you used to, itâs that sound that still propels it forward every day. By all means, you can criticize the sounds coming from "these kids today", but know that new sounds still trace back to their source material (whether you can hear it or not, the influence exists), and there will always be enough room for different rap styles to to co-exist, just as Classical music and Rock 'n Roll continue to inspire the world around us without any genre/sub-genre diluting the pool...in fact, the pool only continues to expand because of it.
Like Roc Marciano, Skyzoo is on a short list of NYC-based MCâs that kept developing a traditional east coast underground sound in their music for years, long after it was en vogue. As one of the genreâs most naturally gifted writers and storytellers, I donât know if any MC working today is as fit to write this album as Skyzoo, a relic that survived a purging of the old guard in NYC only to emerge as part of a resurgence of underground hip-hop, sounding as spry as ever (if not, even stronger). With Retropolitan, every bit of this ode to growing up in a culture capitol feels like a childâs observation from a Brooklyn apartment window rather than a forced exaltation of times gone by.
This pairing may be the most natural for Pete Rock since CL Smooth, and no doubt the music on this album would not exist if it wasn't for timeless records like "T.R.O.Y." that continue to breathe and sound as refreshing as the day it dropped. Right now I doubt many expect Retropolitan to have the same cultural impact (as the material clearly points out, both the world and the genre are so different nowadays), but the music that derived from these two NYC legends certainly packs a wallop of quality that belongs in rotation for years to come.
1. Bandana - Freddie Gibbs & Madlib
By now it's hard to imagine that folks were skeptical of the musical union between Freddie Gibbs and Madlib. But back in 2010/2011, prior to the release of "Thuggin" (the first single to be released from the fantastic project that would eventually become Pinata) the notion of Gangsta Gibbs finding a happy union with the man that was behind classic projects alongside underground icons the likes of MF DOOM and Jay Dilla, sounded more like a fish out of water tale. Today, it would be like hearing news of 21 Savage and DJ Premier dropping.
By the time Bandana finally dropped - the much anticipated follow-up to the Pinata collaboration that many consider a modern classic - the hype had long since buried the initial questions that fans had about what the chemistry would be like between the respected artists, who once climbed the rankings within two very separate lanes. What Pinata proved was that the hard rhymes from Gibbs, when paired with Madlib's chopped up jazzy soulscapes, yield a sound that feels as beautifully organic as many of the genre's purist classic records. The biggest difference between Bandana and its' predecessor is that their chemistry has only improved.
What 'MadGibbs' achieved here was a more intimate and diverse album than Pinata, and arguably a superior one. Bandana may lack the layers of dusty underground grit which came in abundance on Pinata, but Gibbs' flow and pen game are so sharp on this album that it gave Madlib a bit more room to experiment with some sounds that don't instantly point to Madlib as the orchestrator on first listen. Lurking behind the making of this project were Gibbs' very real legal troubles, and the threat of extended prison time that not only jeopardized the completion of this project, but Freddie Gibbs' own freedom. Throughout the amazing Bandana, Gibbs does not hesitate to remind fans of how his life could very well have gone in a different direction, and that's exactly what elevates an album of bars & beats to a gripping, album of the year experience. Even with Bandana still in heavy rotation for the foreseeable future, it's hard not to salivate over what the duo could accomplish next...

đ: run it ( 1:10~2:49 ) performed by đ sakura miyawaki! trigger warnings: some anxiety. mentions: @yuzurk, @rkxkikwang, @rkgray, @yienrk, @rkchoutzuyu, @rkmason, @hyojinrk, @rkyq
sakura likes to start with the good news first, sheâs got the call back to make it past the first round. sheâs stepped up in another territory, one she thought she wouldnât come far to at first but she was proven wrong. she shouldnât be storing disbelief to herself, but fill up with much more confidence if she wants to push through the battle. thatâs the hard part though is being separated from some of her friends like tzuyu and kikwang. she didnât cope up with letting go quite well as shown in her past mannerisms. she wishes that they could be on the same stage as her performing but sometimes, life doesnât always work that way.
lies didnât align with the australian gal, she wasnât one to display her anxiety thatâs written all over but sheâs practised generating the proper facial expressions when up on the stage. it seems silly but body language was essential when performing on the stage. she couldnât just be another body count, sakuraâs made them believe that she was a vocalist at the start but offered a different dish on the table with some rapping fire! in fact, she was more of a rapper than a high-note belting singer ( she wasnât at that peak at all ). so she spends most of her days, other than tending to the aquarium and her daily dose of school, she was working on what song she should perform next.
when it comes to rapping in front of a huge stage and the whole world watching then she best prepares to give it all sheâs got. most importantly, keep up the same energy and flow when on the stage! she couldnât break the chain of the words sheâs about to memorise, sakura ran trial through the verses a couple of times and tried out styles that complimented her vocal mixture with rapping and how the instrumental went. thatâs how her nights pass by until the bright lights and cameras are flashing all over the area. sheâs not coming up first in the short line of female rappers, sakura was one of the few last as her last name started with an m. thank god for now, it serves as a good excuse pass but she shouldnât rely on that too much.
she has to break the bad habits of letting anxiousness overwhelm her, she canât deliver that on the stage when sheâs meant to perform a rap thatâs the polar opposite of her physical epitome and markings! sakura wants to break the poor judgments about her, being called too soft and cute to even rap. the only way that she can cut through is by continuing what she loved to do. the assignment, from what sheâs been told is to showcase an ( ultimately, dominant ) skillset. sakuraâs prepared her resources efficiently. sheâs ( somewhat ) ready for the big day!
since facial recognition serves with influences on votes, she canât look dead. she rises from her bed with a decent amount of energy but it isnât enough to deliver a good verse. once she sips down her green tea, itâll wake her up eventually. she doesnât consume a huge meal in the morning as it takes some energy to muster eating a great portion but sheâs good with a blueberry muffin and her everyday tea. itâs time to at least look like a presentable human being, sakura needs to cover her dark circles that are formed over the past few nights as sheâs become obsessed with her work. she puts on some bb cream and concealer to cover it, lip gloss at the shade of light pink, natural to her colour. with her choice of attire, she fits something thatâs comfortable with the weather today, a light blue denim skirt and some high ankle socks, her top was an off-shoulder pastel purple blouse that was tucked in her denim skirt. sheâs wearing a pair of sneakers which wonât be too hard on her feet standing all day in long queues. when she leaves her house, itâs taking the commute down the building! she shoves her earphones gently in her ears and makes it to her desired destination.
after some time, sheâs reached the grounds and greets some of the familiar faces sheâs spotting right off the bat. hyojin makes her days better when it comes to this setting, sometimes itâs unsettling but she escapes that torment of anxiety when she sees his gorgeous smile. masonâs also there, she greets the older brother figure and stops by for a brief hug ( his presence was surely enlightening as sheâs known him for like forever ) before she turns her direction elsewhere then catches yuqi, a fellow rapper and one she doesnât intend to make an enemy out of. despite the mnet global auditions being regarded as a highly competitive stake, sheâs still able to manage the joy she finds in her friends. sheâll never toss anyone over a reality television show. she can only show support and thatâs about it!
hope for the best, after all? she pulls yena into a reassuring hug prior to walking out on the stage, the music playing as sakura makes her presence known. âhi guys! sakura again here and today, iâll be showing you guys something else!â she puts up two fingers, showing off a âpeaceâ sign, winking and holds the mic tightly closer to her mouth to start spitting out her lines. the instrumental plays, sheâs rapping over the beat.
ya hold up ê”ŹëŠë€ëŠŹ ꔎëŹê°ëŻ 돎ì ê±žìŽ ëë íë ê±°ëêč ëŒêł ë§í 돎ì±
ì ì±êł”ê°ë êłì ë€ìŽ 백Ʞ ë€ìŽ 백Ꞟ ìžì ë€ìŽ ê±žìŽ ìŒ ëșꞎ íì ì ëșêžž 걞 ya i know it big boy ì ìêžžìì ëčìŒ ya i know it big boy ë ìŽë§ì ëčì·ìŽ ë€ìł ì§êž°ë ì§ìłì ëë ë
žë„Œ ì ìì§ ê°ì ìŹêž° ì ì ê°ì ìĄìì§ make it boogie make it boogie switch move it make a movie
the beat was moving at a much faster pace, one thatâs at a higher tempo than she usually raps to but sheâs learned to adjust to this kind of technique. itâs all about breath control which sheâs learned a trick or two from her choir classes. sheâs jumping up on the stage, smiling but with a serious expression on her face as she couldnât be overflowing with aegyo with this kind of theme. sakura has to communicate with her charisma sheâs been taught by her mentors, gray. other influences like yien and luna keep her up to become a strong rapper. she only takes a slight break but then hits it back with another verse!
ìŒë íë žì§ ë°±ëŹžìŽ ë¶ìŹìŒêČŹ ëłŽêž° ì ì ë¶ì ìŽ ë ê°ëĄë§ìŒëêč ë 귞걞 ë¶ìŽ ëëČìì í€ëłŽëê° ë§ë ížêČŹ check it ëê”ŹìêČ íë „ìŽì§ ìłë°íŽë§ ëë í룚 ìŽë ëëš ìŽêČ ì ìëŠŹëĄ ëłŽìŽë ìżë°„ìë§ êł ìŽë ì€ ìčšìŽ ëȘ» ìŽêžŽ ëìŽ ëë„Œ ë°êŸžì§
sheâs led to the path of a singer for a couple of seconds but itâs a nice switch, smooth and the transition clean with her soft vocals complementing the track. before she hits the notes, sakura pulls the microphone away and releases a breath and pulls her control back together. the singing isnât going to overshadow any of her rap, hopefully. sheâs got some of her australian colours unveiling, the english part covered easily.
baby oh the world is yours i'll give it to you can you hear me tell me oh your visions you make them come true you know we run it run it
we run it yah ì±êžž 걎 ì±êČš ëë„Œ ìíŽ we run it yah ì§êžë¶í°ë ëì ìë we run it ì ìì í„íŽ boy where we at i just do it i just do it i just do it i just do it
it seems that the last few verses are much easier than the opening, she seems to catch her breath control easier when it comes to this time. sheâs not getting all tongue-twisted with the korean lyrics, sheâs able to enunciate it correctly along with the occasional english. she isnât afraid to show any of her foreigner roots off, sakura lets her australian accent emphasize on her rap when itâs switching over to english. it makes it a unique attribute and kind of a signature mark as there werenât many female australian rappers in south korea.
chasing dreams i got the feel ë©ì¶ ì ììŽ i love the thrill i'm a beast i got to kill ëë ”ì§ ìì i got the will ëŽ êżì í„íŽ ëŹëŠŹêł íŹêž° ë°ì ììŽ never no grind it out just lose control when it all falls down it's dominos you know i'll get up and try again i can see the light again ë ê°ë„Œ íŽêł fly again winning is my vitamin yeah run this game i just get it once i got it i don't lose it grinding through these bumps and bruises i'm the best and i just proved it
she wants to end the day with nothing but good vibes. but the last few lines take her back to when her hopeful friends dreams are shattered due to the process of elimination but sheâll strive and fight on for them. sakura can put her name out there on stage and not just be another cute face. once the song ends, the lights dim out and then the lightâs on sakura once more and all she can do is smile, âthank you guys for your time! thank you for your support and please support my friends!â she still wants to share generosity by involving the ones she cares for. before she takes the exit door, she bows to the judges and other contestants politely. âhave a good day everyone!â the cuteness aura catches up to her, for sakura itâs something she canât avoid.

THE GREAT CRUNCHYROLL NARUTO REWATCH Unleashes Sakura With Episodes 29-35
Welcome to THE GREAT CRUNCHYROLL NARUTO REWATCH! I'm Daniel Dockery aka That Dude That Won't Shut Up About One Piece, and I'll be your host this week as we make our way through all 220 episodes of the original Naruto. Last week, we covered episodes 22-28, and we continue this week with episodes 29-35.
 This week, the theme is Naruto Minus Naruto, as we lose our title character pretty early on. But despite missing someone shouting about how they're gonna be Hokage one day, this actually seemed to work out pretty well, as it gave our favorite boy Rock Lee and the consistently underrated Sakura a time to shine. Sasuke did some stuff, too, I guess. We also got some bad guy reveals and Gaara being as Gaara as possible. So let's dive right in and let the Crunchyroll Features team give you their thoughts on a batch of episodes that didn't have an ounce of quit in them.Â
 So, not a lot of Naruto in this set of episodes, huh? I mean, we've already gotten to know Sasuke, Sakura, Rock Lee, etc. pretty well so far, so it's not like they can't carry the story, but how do you like the show when the title character spends most of it unconscious?
Paul: I'm fine with it as long as the supporting characters have plenty of interesting things to do. Naruto's personal blend of lunk-headed enthusiasm hasn't really clicked with me yet, so I'm happy to see other characters take center stage now and then, and I like that Sakura finally got a moment to prove her mettle in these episodes.
 Peter: This was probably Sakura's biggest moment in Naruto... possibly including Shippuden. I forgot they combined her special haircut scene with the Ino flashback. The whole situation with the sound ninja was kind of a cluster but I felt like that sequence was particularly well-done. Episode 30 is easily the best in the series so far, I forgot how well directed the moment where Sakura realizes she's alone is.
 Danni: I've joked in my livetweets that I can't tell whether the main character of this show is Naruto or Sasuke yet, but that kind of became not a joke at all this time around, didn't it? That was kind of a shame, given that his material at the very beginning of this batch where he's chiding Sasuke is great. Luckily, the rest of the cast was great all around in this batch.
 Noelle: It is pretty funny to have the protagonist absent, but it's clearly not just wasting time. A lot of stuff happens while Naruto is out cold, especially the big fight where Sakura shines, and she needed to shine! A protagonist doesn't have to be there all the time, even if they are carrying the story, and these segments are proof of that.
 Jared: Having Naruto out for most of the episodes really made some other characters step up and gave them a time to shine like Sakura (finally) and Ino's group. You couldn't get away with having him be gone or KO'd all the time, but especially when the show just brought forth all these new characters, it worked.
 Kevin: It actually helped to up the stakes a bit and create space for more character development. Sakura hasn't needed to do much until now, since Sasuke and Naruto could fight instead. In this set of episodes, the boys were unconscious the majority of the time, so not only did she need to push herself to look after them, but she also needed to fight opponents that even seasoned Genin like Lee couldn't stand up against. Running or hiding weren't options.
 Carolyn: THIS is the Sakura I remembered and have been missing this whole time. I am fine with Naruto sitting out a spell so Sakura can rise.
  David: While I like that the other characters are getting the spotlight, I'm also not a huge fan of how they're getting it. Lee? He's allowed to be cool for a little bit, but still has to be undermined by his limitations that also define his character. Sakura? We have to square getting her development with her entire character revolving around Sasuke. Oh, and Sasuke? Got cool powers from the new bad guy, so the whole thing feels a little artificial by the end.
 Joseph: It kind of makes it seem like they just didn't know what to do with Naruto while other people have the spotlight, because knowing his character he would have to butt in no matter what, dattebayo! If it paves the way for more episodes like 30, which features out of this world choreography and animation, I'm all for it, dattebayo.
 Kara: I'm a Doctor Who fan - having the lead unconscious or straight-up missing for major portions of story is familiar territory. That said, I'm glad it was used to good effect here. I was hesitant coming into the Chunin Exam arc because there are Just So Many Characters, and a lot of them are completely new but clearly important. Giving Nart some down time while we get to know how they work (and how characters we've seen before are growing) was a good idea.
 These episodes are sort of bookended by two horrific reveals:
1) IT WAS ME, OROCHIMARU, THE WHOLE TIME
2)WTF, GAARA
How do you feel about these two? I've been playing a lot of Gaara in Jump Force, but I forgot that he pretty much opens his character arc in the show through intense murder.
Paul: I mentioned this on Twitter before, but although Orochimaru is clearly coded to be this big, scary, impressive villain, he strikes me as the ninja equivalent of that bad friend whom everybody kinda knows but nobody particularly likes. Orochimaru's the kind of guy who would get a little too drunk at the holiday ninja party, and then he'd awkwardly hit on your ninja girlfriend, and then he'd puke on your ninja couch cushion and then flip it over to hide the ninja vomit rather than tell you about it. Damn it, Orochimaru!
Gaara is just a comical murder-baby so far. Again, I know he's supposed to be frightening, but I just think he's a precious little sandy cinnamon roll.
 Peter: Given what Orochimaru's done so far, I'm actually curious if Kishimoto had a plan for him at this point. One of this lines in particular speaking with Anko is hilarious in retrospect. I have a new appreciation for Temari and Kankuro. The scene where they were trying to get Gaara to calm down was particularly good. You got a sense of how desperate and afraid they are of Gaara. Also I don't remember Orochimaru using so many... wind ki blasts? I think Kishimoto wasn't sure what powers he had yet.
 Danni: I'm a little disappointed that my perfect snake wife was just a creepy old snake man in disguise. I'm honestly more terrified of Gaara right now. Orochimaru seems like he actually has a plan. Gaara just seems a bit...unhinged...
  Noelle: I definitely agree with Peter, where Orochimaru in his introduction definitely wasn't as cohesive power-wise, as opposed to the snakes and more snakes that he becomes later. He is set up to be extremely threatening, but at this point, it's definitely more potential than it is factual. As for Gaara, Gaara is one of my faves, even if he starts out as a murder machine. The murder does not stop my appreciation for him. You go, Gaara.
 Jared: Now I want a redub of those scenes with Orochimaru except with the Higher Power reveal audio. They certainly make him seem to be a big deal, although it's still relatively shrouded in mystery. Gaara's showing fell incredibly flat for me. Unlike when we first saw him where he had this mysterious aura about him, this just felt like he was made to be the ultimate edgelord. Which if the folks above me are indicating, he gets better, so hopefully that happens sooner rather than later.
 Kevin: For both of them, I feel like their introductions worked well to establish them as serious threats. Orochimaru as a somewhat unknown quantity that even the adults are scared of, while Gaara is a coldblooded Genin that doesn't bat an eye at killing people, to the point that even his teammates fear for their lives when around him. For Orochimaru though, I can't remember any actual reason why he's actually in the Chunin Exam. We'll get to future events in later installments, but why bother actually joining the Genin?
 Carolyn: I remember loving Orochimaru the first time I watched the show and thinking he was a major villain. They certainly set him to seem that way. I'm interested to see if my thoughts on that change as we progress. I also remember thinking Gaara was quite impressive and mysterious, though he was never a favorite character of mine. Rewatching the show, they definitely hype up his skills.
 David: Gaara having a team that is scared of him is significantly more scary than Orochimaru's clear long-term threat foundation going on here. It's kind of cheating but I think this matters a lot for how impactful this ends up being very soon, whereas Orochimaru's threat is much more broad and lore-spanning in the grand scheme of things.
 Joseph: Between Orochimaru, cursed Sasuke, and Gaara, there's so much DANGER in these eps. I love it!
  Kara: Holy crow, things got dark. I'm not saying that as a negative, either. I'll be curious to see what happens with Orochimaru, because that's some high-stakes stuff that got thrown into the mix. I had a feeling Gaara was gonna make Sasuke look like a ray of sunshine by comparison, but I'm with Akamaru on that whole situation.
 If you had to get into intense anime battles in your actual, half-anime life, and you had to copy a Naruto character's techniques, whose style would you use?
Paul: I will continue to stan for my main man, Choji Akimichi, and his ability to transform into the boulder from Raiders of the Lost Ark. Also, they never kill the chubby comic relief characters, so my plot armor would keep me safe from harm but not from embarrassment.
Peter: I feel like the correct answer is Gaara since you can just stand in place writing poems while sand kills people. Practically I think it's hard to argue that Sasuke doesn't have the most "ninja-like" style incorporating the three "jutsus" and leaning heavily on misdirection and outmaneuvering. Each requires having a pretty particular thing though, so it's kind of a lottery by birth.
Danni: Probably Orochimaru. Less for his actual fighting techniques and more because his Mr. Fantastic powers could come in handy when lounging around the house.
Noelle: Gaara's, having sand do my bidding would be pretty neat, and it's not like I sleep much anyway.
Jared: Rock Lee's techniques are what basically what I imagined myself when I was younger when thinking of having anime type fights.
Kevin: I would probably go for the Sharingan, largely due to how versatile it is. It gives amazing kinetic vision, allowing the user to dodge more and land more hits, lets them copy any ninjutsu the enemy uses, can make [REDACTED], or [REDACTED] or even summon [REDACTED], and that's without even getting into the unique abilities from [REDACTED]! Basically, it allows for a lot of flexible techniques, and just with the slight drawback of [REDACTED].
 Carolyn: Ooh, can I redact stuff, too? My favorite hasn't happened yet. Have I mentioned how much I love Shikamaru?
 David: Is it wrong to want to be Sasuke just because he gets the most well-animated fight scenes? I want to be as cool as he is in those.
 Joseph: I've always been a fan of the Shadow Imitation Technique of the Nara clan. I think this is the first time we've seen it in the anime, but throughout the manga I always found it awesome whenever, BAM, someone found themselves ensared out of nowhere.
 Kara: Gonna have to say Ino and the body-hopping. I'm so clumsy, the only way I'll ever effectively beat someone up is if I project into them and beat myself up.
So, Sakura gets a few cool minutes in Episode 32. I especially like the reveal that it wasn't a substitution and that she was actually dropping on Zaku and gutting through those Kunai. However, it's kind of mired in a lot of flashback and a weird "How does my face look?" backstory. How did you feel about it? I will say, for a little bit, I got hyped. Bleeding Sakura descending like Batman on this goon is a dope visual.
Paul: I'm glad Sakura finally got a chance to shine, and I didn't feel that the drama of the scene was terribly undercut by her childhood anxieties about having such an enormous forehead. It contextualizes some of her earlier, snappish behavior, and I was impressed with her growth as a character when she expressed a genuine desire to protect Naruto and when she offered Rock Lee her heartfelt thanks.
Peter: I'm kind of two minds on this watching it for the second time. If anything I feel like her dramatic move was undercut by the fact that there were two more Leaf squads that could have stepped in acting as a sort of safety net rather than anything actually relying on her. That said, I think the balance between her efforts in the moment and Ino remembering the extremely dumb stupid kid reason they stopped being friends was great.
Danni: I adored it. A woman's body in media is often portrayed as a priceless work of art. It's an object whose fragile beauty is meant to be fawned over and protected. The slightest mark of imperfection is detrimental to the whole piece. This either leads to strong women whose bodies remain unscathed or weak women whose bodies exist to be tragically violated. Seeing Sakura use her own body as both a weapon and a shield in this fight was nothing less than refreshing. She cast aside the beauty of her long hair, took three kunai to the body in order to get closer than her target, straight up sunk her teeth into him like a wild animal, and took a beating without flinching or letting go. It was so incredibly refreshing to see a woman actually fight with her whole body rather than an objectified version of one.
 Noelle: This is Sakura's big awesome moment, and she nailed it. She doesn't have signature jutsu like Naruto's clones or Sasuke's fire - all she really has are perfected versions of the basics. That she's able to use her intellect to her advantage; setting traps, tricking her opponents, it works for her character. The fact that she is unyielding is fantastic, considering that in a lot of anime fight scenes featuring women it it's rarely conveyed just how brutal they can get. Sakura's desperately fighting, and she will take kunai and even bite her opponents if it means she can help her friends. It's rough, messy, and great. Let girls have brawls too!
Jared: I'm a huge fan of the "cutting your hair to signify a big change" trope, so I was incredibly excited to see it here. This moment for Sakura was essentially what I'd been waiting for this entire time with her and it delivered. I was kind of surprised how much backstory we got here, but I think it fit well with everything that was happening around them with Sakura and Ino. Everything about how she attacks Zaku felt like she was desperately doing anything she could to survive, which included things like biting and not letting go. Plus, I'm surprised they showed her bloodied up.
Kevin: To put it this way, Sakura faking out Zaku is both my highest and lowest point of the week. I love that we finally got to see her fight and even out think her opponent, and I was even okay with seeing Ino struggle with their history when deciding how to act, seeing her friend-turned-rival in trouble. They probably could have cut one or two of the flashbacks and lost nothing from the storytelling though.
 Carolyn: I actually loved the flashbacks explaining her desire for long hair to impress Sasuke and her rivalry for his heart mixed in with Sakura being an awesome fighter. We saw where she came from and we see where she's headed. Her cutting off her hair (epic) was not just a clever tactic, it was her moving past her fickle, shallow priorities and stepping up. (And incidentally, finally winning Sasuke's respect.) I liked that contrast and I thought it made her powerful moments more meaningful.
 David: I don't like how being feminine was presented so constantly as a negative thing in the lead up to her 'level up', especially because it got immediately followed up by a line from Shikamaru to Choji about how they need to be the 'men' of the situation. I also don't like how it didn't end up even really helping the situation, but Sasuke's unintentional powerup did. I do like how the story clearly realized how drastically it was underutilizing its main female characters and tried to rectify that as well as it could within the characterization it had already established for them. So, basically, I like that it ended up where it was, but I wish it didn't have to do that in the first place.
 Joseph: Sakura's moment makes up for a lot of her inaction in previous episodes. It made it feel like a much more significant turn, and I think it's another great argument for the power of anime adaptations in taking certain aspects of the source material to the next level. I would also be remiss not to mention how major of a role she played in stopping Sasuke after he awakened to some straight-up Final Fantasy IV midi cover music.
 Kara: Sakura's characterization grew three sizes this week! Normally I have nothing against romance or a crush being a motivator (people in the real world act that way sometimes), but I was getting second-hand embarrassment whenever everyone and their mother used her emotions against her because she was that much of an open book. She was seriously dope in episode 32, and I do like that she didn't drop her feelings so much as compartmentalize them. Was it perfect? No. Was it better than what we've seen for the last few weeks? Very much. Plus we've spent so much time being told she knows her stuff, it was nice to see it in action.
 If you've read the manga, how do you feel about the pacing of the anime at this point?
Peter: I appreciate they're not trying to draw things out, past a few recap episodes. The only real filler we've gotten was a few more social scenes that ultimately helped build up the individual Team 7 members more so I'm good with them. Visually the series uses the manga as a direct roadmap the majority of the time but the departures, like in Naruto's fight against Haku, were extremely good.
Noelle: It's definitely a little slower, especially since you can read the same amount content much faster than you can watch it. Different mediums lend to different speeds. At the same time, it's not significantly slower - not like One Piece - so it's pretty tolerable. I can't say I have much complaints with the pacing.
David: It's gotten slower recently, but it's still MUCH better than I expect from long-running shonen adaptations even today. I never feel like a half hour isn't used effectively, which is impressive.
Joseph: They've chopped a few minutes off the absurdly long flashbacks at the start of each episode, so it's much punchier now than when it was covering the Zabuza fight. The adaptation nails some of the big moments, so I think they do a fantastic job of making the most out of Kishimoto's story and characters.
Last but not least, what was everyone's high and low points for this week, along with anything else you want to shout out?
 Paul: My high point was the fight between Sasuke and Orochimaru in Episode 30. Pierrot's animation team really pulled out all the stops for that one, and I was frankly blown away by how well-staged it was, especially since the previous episode was so janky, to the point where it gave us the "Naruto, you look kind of cool" silly face meme. My low point was the reveal that Rock Lee's ultimate technique is just a glorified Izuna Drop. I was disappointed by that, because I was expecting something really far out there.
  Peter: I'd have to say everyone involved had a low moment against the sound ninja. Rock Lee could have actually just kicked the guys head off so I'm not sure why he pulled out his ultimate technique. The master strategist Shikamaru really handled the InoShikaCho combo poorly (why not just have Ino knock the paralyzed guy out then 3v1 the last guy?). Feels like there were too many cooks in the kitchen while Kishimoto was trying to let Sakura stand on her own. High point was Sasuke's epic fight against Orichimaru... or maybe Gaara being Goth Prime?
 Danni: If you can't guess already, the high point of this batch for me is Sakura's battle. Naruto snapping Sasuke out of his daze and the whole fight between Sasuke and Orochimaru are close runner-ups. I can't say there were any real low, low points for me in this batch, but I could have done without the whole prolonged tension of them debating whether or not to open the scroll simply for them to move on without opening it. I really feel like that could have been a lot more condensed.
 Noelle: It has to be Sakura's battle. She's the last member of the team who hasn't really had a moment of growth, as she's mostly been stuck fawning over Sasuke. Now she has a moment of her own, to show that she really can be one of their peers in combat, not just because she's assigned to be alongside them. Sasuke vs Orochimaru was also fantastic to watch. Low points would probably be the Sound Ninja fight when Sakura wasn't the highlight, it felt a little too long.
 Jared: The true answer here is Sakura finally getting her moment as the high point. The flow of these episodes just kept moving until the end where things really slowed down, but that makes sense. Sasuke pulling out a Canadian Destroyer (front flip piledriver) was something I absolutely wasn't expecting. Maybe my low points would be Gaara's fight and then Naruto wanting to open up the scroll since it felt way too obvious that he'd do that.
 Kevin: Sakura's fight somehow managed to be both the best and worst moments. The best moment was when she uses Substitution multiple times to trick her opponent into giving her an opening, even though she needed to take multiple kunai wounds in the process. It was awesome to see her thinking, and there might've even been a bit of Naruto rubbing off on her, given how brazen the plan was. Unfortunately, it led to the end of her plan... biting Zaku's arm and just holding on as he kept punching her head. Great plan, Sakura.
Carolyn: The squirrel and the hair cut were high points for me. Also, just seeing everyone have respect for each other. Sakura thanks Rock Lee, Rock Lee acknowledges Sasuke's ability. Good stuff.
 David: It might not sound like it so far, but Sakura's fight is my high point for not just this bit, but the entirety of the show - it's one of the defining moments of the series to me, something that has stuck with me for decades at this point. So, criticisms aside, that matters a lot to me. Low point is how even when the show is trying to make Lee cool is still undermines him just as quickly, making it hard to believe it really appreciates his struggle.
Joseph: Episode 30 is an all-timer, so that's gotta be my high point. The low point was probably the Sound Ninja. Their powers are cool, and I understand jutsu is a term encompassing techniques in a wide swath, but to me they just had prosthetics and weapons. Hey, check out my jutsu *pulls out a gun*.
Kara: Can't decide between Sasuka vs. Orochimaru or Sakura finally Doing Things as my high point. Really liked both. Low point was probably every time I had to see Naruto squiggling around in snake guts.

How The Mandalorian Season 2 Finale Could Give Us the Ezra Bridger Moment Weâve Been Waiting For
https://ift.tt/eA8V8J
This Star Wars: The Mandalorian article contains spoilers.
The Mandalorian season 2 finale is poised to be the seriesâ biggest episode yet. Mando and the cruel Moff Gideon are set up for a rematch, and this time, the stakes are higher than ever before, with little Groguâs life hanging in the balance.
Fortunately, Mando wonât be taking on the Empire on his own. Heâll have help from Boba Fett, Fennec Shand, and Cara Dune, but is that enough? Gideon not only commands a brigade of stormtroopers but also has the fearsome dark troopers at his disposal as well as the Darksaber. Even for the galaxyâs greatest bounty hunters, those odds may be too great. Thatâs why some fans believe the stage is set for one last big cameo that could turn things in Mandoâs favor.
Stream your Star Wars favorites right here!
Ever since Grogu used the Force on Tython to contact any Jedi who might be listening, fans have been speculating about which Jedi might answer the call. There are plenty of theories. The most obvious Jedi who might be coming to Groguâs rescue is Luke Skywalker since heâs the only Jedi besides Ahsoka Tano who we know for sure is out there. Fans of more recent Jedi characters have put their hopes on Cal Kestis, the young hero from the Jedi: Fallen Order video game. A more far-fetched candidate is Mace Windu, the Jedi Master from the Prequel Trilogy who met his end in Revenge of the Sith but who some believe is still alive somewhere.
While any of these Jedi could potentially break the internet on Friday, there is one other beloved Star Wars character who many fans hope will make his live-action debut in Chapter 16: Ezra Bridger, a hero who not only could still be alive during the time of The Mandalorian but who also has direct ties to other cameo characters like Ahsoka Tano and Bo-Katan Kryze. In fact, ever since the latter two animated characters were confirmed for the live-action series, many have wondered if they were paving the way for this third major guest appearance.
For those who missed Rebels during its original run or havenât binged it on Disney+ yet (shame on you), Ezra is the main protagonist of the animated series, a young, Force-sensitive freedom fighter who joins a band of rebels known as the Spectres in the years before the official start of the Galactic Civil War. Heâs one of the earliest rebels and a key player in the formation of the Rebel Alliance, and even brushes shoulders with many of its leaders, such as Mon Mothma, Bail Organa, and Princess Leia.
In the years just prior to A New Hope, Ezra also becomes one of the few Jedi left in the galaxy when former-Jedi-turned-Spectre Kanan Jarrus decides to train him in the ways of the Force. Together, the master and apprentice delve deeper into the secrets of the Force, the Jedi, and the Sith than any of the characters in the movies have. But while Ezraâs connection to the Force and his life as a Jedi padawan are integral to his role on the show, his storyline always goes back to being a rebel on his home planet of Lothal, which he tries to free from the Empire throughout the series.
Finally, in the series finale, âFamily Reunion â Farewell,â Ezra gets his chance to liberate Lothal once and for all. But it comes at a cost. While fighting Grand Admiral Thrawnâs forces, he and the Chiss Imperial are zapped into hyperspace to parts unknown, leaving the fate of both the hero and the villain unresolved. Two years since the Rebels finale, we still donât know where Ezra is.
Fans of Rebels undoubtedly perked up when considering the implications of Ahsokaâs return on The Mandalorian and how it might open the door for Ezra to come back, too. After all, the last time we saw Ahsoka (chronologically) was on Lothal, where she reunited with Sabine Wren (another Mandalorian) before heading out on an adventure together to find their missing comrade.
Ahsoka and Sabineâs reunion is actually an epilogue to the show set a year after the Battle of Endor and the fall of the Empire. Thatâs 5 ABY (After the Battle of Yavin). Meanwhile, The Mandalorian is set in 9 ABY, four years after that epilogue and not too long after Ahsoka and Sabine set out to find Ezra.
When Mando finally meets Ahsoka in âThe Jedi,â we learn that sheâs a step closer to finding Thrawn. In fact, sheâs on Corvus because the tyrannical Magistrate Morgan Elsbeth knows where the Imperial villain is. While the very mention of Thrawn on The Mandalorian could suggest that Disney is interested in retelling one of the most beloved post-Return of the Jedi stories from the old Legends continuity, itâs just as likely that Ahsoka needs to find the villain because he might know where Ezra is.
Fans who have been following executive producer Dave Filoniâs Star Wars work from The Clone Wars to The Mandalorian know that he loves to follow story threads from one series to the next. With so few years having passed between the Rebels epilogue and the start of The Mandalorian, the live-action series provides a very easy way to explore what happened next to Ahsoka, Bo-Katan, Ezra, Thrawn, and other characters he used for the animated series. But due to the toy box mystery nature of the show, itâs unclear just what chapter of Ahsokaâs journey weâre seeing in âThe Jedi.â Has she already found Ezra and is now out to end Thrawnâs reign of terror for good or is the Rebels hero stil missing?
Whether already back in action by the time of The Mandalorian or miraculously guided home by Groguâs call through the Force, the Ezra weâd meet in live-action would be a bit different from the young hero we last saw on Rebels. For one thing, he would be a bit older in 9 ABY. Born in 19 BBY (Before the Battle of Yavin), Ezra would be about 28 if he were to appear on The Mandalorian, paving the way for Disney to cast an older actor in the role. This would allow showrunner Jon Favreau and Filoni to reintroduce the character but in a slightly different way. And how have Ezraâs adventures after Rebels changed him? We could very well meet an Ezra who is much stronger in the Force than the last time we saw him.
Or, if Star Wars follows its long tradition of sending light side characters to parts unknown and bringing them back corrupted and evil, we could meet an Ezra whoâs given in to the dark side. Rebels season 3 teased that Ezra had a dark side, and bringing him back to Star Wars as a villain would really add some complexity and stakes to Ahsokaâs own story on The Mandalorian.
Regardless of what Ezra would be like in his late 20s, a story of this magnitude really deserves its own space to breathe instead of being shoved in as a sub-plot in Mando and Baby Yodaâs adventure. This might be where the newly-announced Ahsoka spinoff series might come in. A show focusing solely on Ahsokaâs search for Ezra, as well as her further adventures, seems like a more appropriate place for the young Jediâs return.
But thatâs not stopped people from hoping for Ezraâs return on The Mandalorian or from fancasting the character. Who is the front runner? The Haunting of Bly Manorâs Rahul Kohli, who has been the subject of many rumors over the past few months, chiefly that heâs been cast as Ezra in secret and is set to make his debut in Chapter 16.
While Kohli has denied being involved in any way with Star Wars, the actor has not been shy about his interest in playing Ezra. In September, he sparked a new round of rumors when he tweeted, âIâve gotten into that Lothal orphan, force sensitive, trained by Kanan Jarrus kind of shape. For no particular reason.â The tweet excited such a furor among fans that Kohli had to walk back the post, explaining that heâd made it in jest on his way to the gym.
Seriously, for no particular reason.
â Rahul Kohli (@RahulKohli13) September 24, 2020
But since then, Kohli has joined in on the fancasting, often retweeting fan art imagining himself as an older Ezra.
I got Bosslogicâd! đ https://t.co/XcznVUU8B8

At first light, on the fifth day. At dawn, look to the East. https://t.co/b2W7T59Uyf
â Rahul Kohli (@RahulKohli13) December 12, 2020
This hasnât helped dissipate the rumors, of course. Commenting on why heâs encouraged fans who want him to be in Star Wars, Kohli put it simply: âLemme set the record straight real quick, why do I fancast or engage with fancasting? Because unless itâs rammed down peopleâs throats, ainât nobody thinking of casting an Indian guy in iconic roles. If I keep pushing, maybe one of us gets through.â
Lemme set the record straight real quick, why do I fancast or engage with fancasting? Because unless itâs rammed down peopleâs throats, ainât nobody thinking of casting an Indian guy in iconic roles. If I keep pushing, maybe one of us gets through đ

Personally, as a Latino who has enjoyed watching actors like Pedro Pascal and Oscar Isaac play major characters in Star Wars projects, Iâm absolutely here for what Kohli is saying. I do hope he gets cast as Ezra.
Whether this has already happened in time for Kohli to thrash his way through Gideonâs forces in The Mandalorian season 2 finale remains to be seen. And what would happen next? Would Ezra decide to train Grogu? The two Jedi have at least one captivating connection: both of their lives have been devastated by the Empire (Ezraâs parents were killed by the evil government), and while Ezra grew up after the fall of the Jedi, his master was a padawan during Order 66. We watch Kanan pass on that history and many of the traditions of the old Jedi Order to Ezra throughout Rebels, so Ezra would understand where Grogu comes from and why heâs afraid to be a Jedi even after the fall of the Empire. In many ways, it would make sense for Ezra to become Groguâs master.
But even if Ezra is about to hit The Mandalorian, it seems very unlikely that heâd actually take Grogu away to train him. After all, Mando and Groguâs relationship is the core of the show. Why would Disney want to break away from the formula that has made the live-action series such a success?
Still, seeing Ezra in live-action for the first time would pack one final punch in a season full of exciting guest appearances. Star Wars has always strived to be one long, cohesive story, and The Mandalorian has truly excelled at connecting its gritty post-Return of the Jedi corner of the galaxy to the animated universe inspired by the Prequel Trilogy. And if Ezra isnât the final guest character of the season, thereâs a chance it could be Sabine?
Keep up with all of The Mandalorian season 2 news here.

Top 15 films of 2017
Yeah Twin Peaks: The Return was better than all of these but wygd? ¯\_(ă)_/ÂŻ
15. Good Time
A pulse-pounding neon-soaked descent into hell, Good Time has a classic setup of a robbery gone wrong, but itâs the breathtaking way the Safdie brothers stage it that truly sets this story apart. A completely unrecognizable Robert Pattinson stars as Connie Nikas, a demented, strung-out criminal searching for a way to break his brother out of Rikerâs Island only to be sidetracked by his own vices and incompetencies. You simply canât take your eyes off it.
14. Okja
Every film by Bong Joon-Ho has an uncanny ability to whiz by so effortlessly and his latest creature feature is no exception. Crafting a significantly more sympathetic beast than in his earlier The Host, Okja is a classic tale of human/animal friendship in the vein of E.T.. But make no mistake, Okja is a pointed satire of the giant capitalist racket that is the meat industry. It never sacrifices the good story whilst still delivering this message however, and Okja will tug at your heartstrings as well as thrill your inner action junkie.
13. Logan
In a year full of very fine superhero films (Wonder Woman and Thor: Ragnarok come to mind) Logan easily towered over the rest. Anchored by two excellent performances by longtime Wolverine Hugh Jackman as well as Patrick Stewart as an aging Professor X, James Mangold proved a good story told well eclipses the novelty of a cinematic universe any day. Itâs a stirring climax to a franchise that desperately needed an injection of pathos.
12. The Shape of Water
Guillermo del Toro has proven heâs the most versatile maker of monsters in this medium, and he returns on a smaller scale to tell this fantastic fairy tale about a webbed fish-man and the mute woman who falls in love with him. It may stick a little closer to formula than some might like, but it makes up for this with some brilliant performances from the entire cast, especially Sally Hawkins as protagonist Eliza and Richard Jenkins as her equally lonely best friend. Itâs a film that only Del Toro could make and he imbues it with his signature amount of heart to make it a lovely fairy tale.
11. Personal Shopper
Personal Shopper is a not a film eager to divulge its mysteries. A dreamy, creepy exterior covers the heart of this film thatâs really a gut-wrenching portrait of grief. Kristen Stewart is at her absolute best as a grieving sister moonlighting as a personal shopper for a member of the Paris elite. Her descent into paranoia and madness is both spine-tingling and mesmerizing and the ending will knock you out.
10. John Wick: Chapter Two
The original John Wick was a welcome and pulpy surprise return to form for action maestro Keanu Reeves, but its sequel goes for broke in a way that pays off in a way I doubt anyone could have expected. The action is bolder, the stakes are even higher, and Wickâs society of assassins becomes deeper and more interesting than it had any right to be.
9. Call Me By Your Name
A tender, beautiful romance set in the heart of northern Italy, Call Me By Your Name will make you long for the dog days of summer and pine for the caress of a lost love. Both Timothee Chalamet and Armie Hammer give Oscar-caliber performances as two star-crossed lovers who share one sweet summer together. The exceptional screenplay by James White makes it feel so authentic and the haunting songs by Sufjan Stevens will make sure this is not a film that will leave your soul any time soon.Â
8. Phantom Thread
One of the film industryâs most unique voices, Paul Thomas Anderson seems to challenge his own ambitions with every new film he creates and Phantom Thread is no exception. Set in post-WWII London, Daniel Day-Lewis (in his alleged final performance) plays dressmaker Reynolds Woodcock who falls in love with the young ingenue Alma, played to perfection by Vicky Krieps. To get too far deep into the plot would spoil the magic, but Phantom Thread is one of Paul Thomas Andersonâs funniest, quirkiest and most elegant movies heâs made in his incredible career.
7. Get Out
To harp too long on the timeliness and sharpness of Get Outâs societal commentary may be natural, but can do a disservice to just how tightly and expertly it executes as a thriller. Yes, Jordan Peeleâs script contains some of the sharpest barbs towards white society in the Trump era, but it would be just as thrilling without them. Get Out is one of the best horror films in years and the future is blindingly bright for Jordan Peeleâs directing career. Â
6. After The Storm
Hirokazu Kore-edaâs After the Storm is an incredibly endearing tale of an ordinary Japanese family, a relationship drama about a man trying to do right by his ex-wife, his son and his aging mother. Full of humor, incredible performances and a bittersweet melancholiness to the whole affair, this is the cinematic equivalent of a warm hug that will leave you misty-eyed. Donât miss this one now that itâs made its way to Amazon Prime.
5. Star Wars: The Last Jedi
What better way to characterize the year that was 2017 than failed resistances, distrust in old institutions and everything going to hell in a handbasket. If being that thematically resonant was all The Last Jedi was able to accomplish, it would still be a fine movie. But Rian Johnsonâs assured direction and script full of zippy and wonderful dialogue made sure The Last Jedi is of the finest entries in the entire saga.
4. Dunkirk
In many ways, Dunkirk is a film that Christopher Nolanâs entire career has been building towards. A ticking clock in three concentric circles, Dunkirk dramatizes the thrilling escape of one of the most pivotal moments of World War II by telling the story from land, sea and air. Dunkirk is much more than its narrative gimmick, however, as this is easily one of the most tense hour and forty minutes you can endure on the big screen. Its editing of each dramatic escape is simply thrilling and cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema makes us of every inch of detail the 70mm IMAX cameras can capture. Seek out a 70mm screening before itâs too late as it may be the best theater experience out there.
3. Blade Runner 2049
Even with people as talented as Denis Villeneuve, Roger Deakins and Ryan Gosling onboard, it was going to take quite a bit of quality for this to be a worthy sequel to arguably the most seminal piece of science fiction cinema ever. And yet Blade Runner 2049 is a stunning work. Rarely is a blockbuster of this size so hypnotic, meditative and thoughtful, and rarely does a sequel come so close to eclipsing its original.
2. Baby Driver
Thereâs no one making movies today quite like Edgar Wright does, and Baby Driver is but the latest shining example of a master at work. Wright made a movie for all of us who drum on our steering wheel too much, stay in the car a little extra to finish a great tune of air guitar, or need an extra "HEY" to pull out our earphones. This is a symphony of action, hilarity and pure filmmaking bliss set to a delightful soundtrack with editing that is head-spinningly frantic. Frankly you wonât have more fun watching a movie than Baby Driver.Â
1. Lady Bird
Coming-of-age films have a tendency to ring a little hollow if they donât mirror your own experience or the dialogue feels even just a tiny bit off. Lady Bird avoids every single one of these pitfalls and morphs into some universal while at the same time feeling so singular. Greta Gerwig also wrote the incredible Frances Ha and simply knocks you flat with this as her directorial debut. Each character has just the right amount of quirk while also feeling so authentic in their delivery. Saoirse Ronan is simply perfect as the titular Lady Bird and equally amazing is her mother played by Laurie Metcalf. Itâs an odyssey about youth and growing up that will make you both cackle with laughter and leave you misty-eyed with tears.Â

Why We Are Creating a Business Incubator for Our Kids (And How)
Table of Contents[Hide][Show]
Iâve mentioned several times on my podcast that my husband and I have created a business incubator of sorts for our children. Itâs a mini Shark Tank model that we will use to teach them business skills and life lessons during their high-school years.
Itâs easier to do this since we homeschool, and theyâll finish most traditional bookwork by age 14 and start this business program. Theyâll still take the SAT and ACT and get a regular high school diploma in case they decide to go to college, but entrepreneurship is such a part of our life that we want to equip them with the skills to pursue their own business endeavors if they want to.
If our children decide to go to college, we will fully support that, but inspired by the Thiel Fellowship, weâve decided to give them the space and support to pursue their big ideas early.
Since we are both entrepreneurs, this is also a way for us to spend time with them while passing along lessons weâve learned in our own business journeys.
Why a Business Incubator?
My husband and I both felt like we went through this process accidentally as adults when we started businesses and learned many lessons the hard way. Despite the struggles that come with running a business (and often through them), weâve learned so many valuable life lessons.
Yet, for us, these lessons were learned as adults when the stakes were higher. We have kids to provide for and monthly expenses to cover. We wouldnât trade these hard-learned lessons for the world, but we want our kids to have a chance to learn similar lessons while the stakes are a bit lower.
Our Deal With Our Kids
The business incubator led to a deal (a contract of sorts) that we have with our children. Specifically that:
Our kids must run a profitable business for one year before we will sign off for them to get their drivers license or have their own cell phone.
We chose those specific things because they are highly motivating for teenagers, but also because these are two things that require a degree of responsibility that they can demonstrate through the consistency of running a business.
Learning Life Lessons & Financial Skills
When we sat down and thought about all the values and skills we wanted to pass on to our children, we realized how many of them can be learned just from starting and running a business. To run a business (even one as simple as a pet sitting, lawn care, or a health blog!), a person would need to:
1. Find a Problem and Solve It
Weâve always explained to our children that an entrepreneur is someone who finds a problem and solves it. Or, to use the definition from Howard Stevenson, a longtime professor at Harvard Business School:
Entrepreneurship is the pursuit of opportunity beyond resources controlled.
Both of these definitions take into account the problem-solving and risk-taking skills associated with entrepreneurship. We especially want to help our children learn the value of finding a problem and solving it. Or put even more simply, how they could benefit from helping others in a meaningful and positive way.
2. Learn Self-Discipline and Motivation
Itâs often said that an entrepreneur is someone who works 80 hours a week for him or herself rather than work 40 hours a week for someone else. This has been true for us much of the time over the last 13 years. But it speaks to another important point of being a business owner⊠the need to be self-motivated and self-disciplined.
Types of businesses vary greatly, but often there is no boss telling a business owner what to do, or giving set hours. While this has many benefits, it also means that the person has to be disciplined enough to work when needed.
We try to stay as hands-off as possible. Once our kids have an idea and are working toward it, we donât remind them what they need to do or what hours they need to work. Theyâre responsible for keeping up with their own responsibilities and schedule related to their business.
3. Be Consistent
My husband often says that being successful requires three things:
Doing the right things, long enough, consistently.
Running any type of business is also a great lesson in consistency. It teaches our kids (and has taught us) that success is not about showing up once, or being good at something one time. Rather, it is about the consistency of doing the things necessary for success over the long term. And, we remind them about finding a way to help others and solve a problem consistently.
4. Learn Interpersonal Skills
There are exceptions, but most businesses require some type of interaction with people from all walks of life. I remember pet sitting and baby sitting businesses as a kid and how I had to interact with the pet owners and parents. Through this, I learned skills like negotiation and customer service (as well as many of the other skills listed here). Even something as simple as a lemonade stand requires interpersonal activity and interaction.
At a time when texting and email dominate conversation, we wanted to find something that would challenge our kids to interact face to face with other people, especially adults.
5. Understand Basic Accounting
In order to show that their businesses are profitable, our children have to track their financials. Iâm grateful to my own parents for teaching my brother and me personal finance from a young age. We managed our own checkbooks that we used to pay for school activities and any expensive clothing or any expenses my parents considered unnecessary.
That background in personal finance made it relatively easy for me to learn business accounting as we started a business, but we wanted to give our kids this skill from an early age. We teach them how to use accounting software to track expenses and income, and how to create a profit and loss statement.
6. Set and Measure Goals
We talk about goal setting often in our family. Our kids often set personal goals in their own activities (like reaching a certain height in pole vaulting or a gymnastics or music milestone). In business, goals are just as important and necessary for a business to succeed.
Yet, a goal without a plan is just a dream.
In starting a business, we help our kids map out monthly and yearly goals and then work backward to create a plan to achieve them.
7. Think Outside the Box
In his fascinating podcast episode, Opher Bayer explained that those who succeed in a world that is increasingly automated and controlled by technology will be those who do things robots canât do. Specifically, those who connect the dots where others donât. People who see patterns where other people canât. And those who maintain creativity and critical thinking.
Weâve found that starting and running a business is one of the best teachers of problem solving and thinking outside the box. New problems constantly pop up, and there isnât an instruction manual. Solving them requires creative and critical thinking, often on the fly.
8. Learn Through Struggles and Adversity
One of our family mottos is that:
You were made to do hard things.
But the real value is the lessons learned and character that is achieved doing those difficult things. Or, as Marcus Aurelius said in the quote that became the inspiration for Ryan Holidayâs book The Obstacle Is the Way:
The impediment to action advances action. What stands in the way becomes the way.
Entrepreneurship and parenting have been my best teachers in this lesson.
9. Work Through Failure
Teaching my kids a high tolerance for risk and failure is very important to me. Itâs something I had to learn as an adult and it was extremely uncomfortable at times. I loved school and it came pretty easy to me, so I never had to face failure there. Until I started running a business, I didnât have to face any really uncomfortable situations involving risk and failure.
As Henry Ford said:
Failure is simply the opportunity to begin again, this time more intelligently.
10. Research
Starting a business requires solving a problem or âpursuing opportunity beyond resources controlled.â As such, thereâs often no clear path or checklist to follow. In most cases, starting something new requires researching and understanding a problem and figuring out how to solve it.
Depending on their age, we provide some help at this stage to point them in the right direction and then let them take it from there. We also encourage them to test their ideas through in-person conversations with people who experience the problem they are trying to solve.
11. Take Advice and Ask for Help
In my own work, Iâve occasionally run into roadblocks that I wasnât able to solve through my own effort or research. At these times, I reached out to others who had encountered similar struggles and asked for advice. I also found business mentors who were ahead of me in their businesses and who I could ask for advice.
For most of my life, Iâd been fiercely independent and these times taught me the value of asking for advice and accepting help from others when needed.
12. Be Involved in Community
In many cases, especially for small businesses our kids are starting, there is an element of having to work within a community or build a community. Iâve talked about this so many times on the podcast, because I strongly believe that fostering solid community is one of the most important things we can do.
As an adult, some of my closest friends have come from my business community, and I want to give our children the same opportunity to build community at a young age. As an example, our oldest son is writing a kidsâ cookbook with some of his friends (who are children of business friends of ours).
Our world is increasingly digital, so this community is even more important but often even harder to find. In my own experience, Iâve had to create the community at times when it wasnât naturally there, and business can be a great shared interest as a starting point.
How the Business Incubator Works:
Now that Iâve explained all the reasons we wanted to have a business incubator for our kids, hereâs a basic overview of how it works:
Brainstorm
We work with the kids to come up with a viable idea. We wonât think of ideas for them, but help them think of things they are interested in, problems they see and can solve, and ways they could do something in a new or unique way.
They donât have to have a business that makes a lot of money, just one that is profitable, so it could be something small to start with. So far, even though they arenât at the ages to have to start businesses yet, theyâve started local businesses, blogs, and even written the cookbook I mentioned above (coming soon!).
Create a Business Plan
Once the kids think of an idea, they have to work on a business plan. Itâs a short summary of what they plan to do and how they plan to do it.
This includes the mission and purpose of the business, who the customer is, how the business will serve the customer, the costs and projected income, the marketing plan, and the goals of the business.
Talk Investing (If Needed)
If their business idea has a start-up cost that they canât fund on their own, we then talk about investing. We have guidelines for how we will invest in our kidsâ businesses and how much. Though hopefully much less stressful, they get to âpitchâ us for their business much like a company would on Shark Tank.
Learn Legal and Tax Implications
At this point, we work with them to research the legal and tax implications of their business idea. Do they need a corporate structure of some kind? How much will they need to set aside for taxes when they start making a profit? What do they need to track to make this easier?
They get to attend and ask questions at meetings with our lawyers, bankers, and accountants to learn the ropes as they go. In fact, even before they start their own businesses, we let them tag along to our meetings with these professionals so they can start to understand these systems (since we had to learn much of them as adults).
Tracking the Business
At this point, we help the kids learn how to track the business income and expenses though simple spreadsheets or Quickbooks. This is a crash course in accounting, and Iâve found that actually managing a business taught me so much more than any class about businesses ever did.
Through this, we help them generate profit and loss statements and determine if their business is profitable.
Responsible Saving, Giving, and Investing With Profit
At the point at which the kids start generating a profit, we also start to teach them our own personal systems for saving, giving, and investing. We set up extra accounts so money automatically flows into them to save, give, and invest each month. This automates our own personal savings and also makes sure that we are setting aside money for these things before it ever hits our own personal accounts.
How We Lead Up to It:
This isnât just something we introduce for the first time when they are teenagers. Learning about business, finances, accounting, economics, and entrepreneurship has been a part of their childhood, and weâve found a few things especially helpful in teaching these lessons:
TED Talks: Most mornings, we watch several TED talks with our kids, upon the advice of podcast guest Naveen Jain.
Access to continuing education and resources: Education isnât something that just happens in school. We value life-long learning, so giving our children access to continuous educational resources is a priority. We use everything from Code Academy so they can learn to code, Udemy for all kinds of new skills, and courses on how to start a blog if they so desire.
Free time and boredom: We believe that children are born natural learners and we try to make sure our kids have lots of time to explore their own interests, try projects, and be creative long before they start a business.
What do you think? What important skills do you work to pass on to your kids?

Chewy founder Ryan Cohen on its fast-approaching IPO: âItâs like seeing my baby graduateâ
Ask any venture capitalist about the most important ingredient to success in startups, and theyâll tell you it centers on founders who can persuade not only investors to part with some of their capital but, more important, who can convince people to leave what are often more stable jobs in order to build a company from scratch.
Ryan Cohen certainly fits the description. It goes a long way in explaining why Chewy, the online retailer of pet food and supplies that he cofounded in 2011, sold to PetSmart for a reported $3.35 billion in 2017 â and why itâs also expected to stage a successful IPO this Friday, when PetSmart spins it off (though PetSmart will continue to hold a majority stake in the company).
Just today, the expected IPO price range, originally planned at between $17 and $19 per share, was raised to $19 to $21 per share, with the IPO advisory firm IPO Boutique saying the guidance it has received is that the deal is âmultiple times oversubscribed.â
Cohen stepped away from Chewy last year, nearly a year after its all-cash sale. Naturally, heâs still excited to stand on the balcony of the NYSE as the companyâs shares begin trading publicly on Friday. We talked with him earlier today about his path, beginning as a baby-faced founder without a college degree or any kind of network â and what, at age 33, heâs planning to do next.
TC: Your company sold in what was called at the time as the biggest e-commerce sale in history, yet most people still donât know who you are. Who are you?
RC: [Laughs.] Iâve been an entrepreneur since as far back a I can remember. My father was a glassware importer â so a businessperson â and I saw what it was like to be accountable and responsible and to have your own employees and from an early age, I just knew that I wasnât cut out for a traditional job, that entrepreneurship was the right path for me.
TC: Were you coding away in your bedroom like 90 percent of the founders we talk with?
RC: I was building websites at [age] 13, 14, then I moved on to affiliate marketing . . . My cofounder, Michael Day [who became Chewyâs CTO] and I met each other in an internet chat room, back when they were pure and bad things werenât happening [online]. It was [centered around] website design computer programming, and we just hit it off.
TC: You get together, and then you settle on creating a retail pets business. Why?Â
RC: We were doing affiliate marketing and we wanted to own the entire customer experience and were looking for big categories that were underpenetrated. In fact, we thought the jewelry space was ripe for disruption, so we started going to trade shows and building the site and the back end.
We even spent a few hundred thousand dollars on jewelry and we were a few weeks away from launching the company, but I have a poodle, Tylee, whoâs now 12 years old, and I would go every couple of weeks to buy products from this store owner who knew me and who I really trusted and who was a pet lover like me. And I had this epiphany; I realized Iâm so much more passionate about this category. So we sold the jewelry and luckily got back most of our money and started Chewy.
TC: Obviously, youâd heard of the terrible fate of dot.com high-flier Pets.com. Why didnât that dissuade you?
RC: The world was full of business models back then didnât make sense. People werenât online. They were using dial-up. They werenât comfortable putting their credit card online. But over time, so much changed, including that the pets market had moved up into high-margin, higher-retail price points. You could also suddenly ship 30-pound boxes from most of the country overnight, thanks to shipping density.
TC: You were living in Dania Beach, Florida â not exactly a tech hub at the time. Did you think about moving?
RC: I had family here, growing up. I also knew it would be really expensive to build customer service in a big city. So it ended up working our really well. But youâre right, from a financing standpoint, south Florida is not a popular tech hub. We also had the fact that we were going head-to-head with Amazon, that I have no college eduction, and the demise of Pets.com, and so when we talked with VCs, it was like, âWeâll pass.â
TC: Without outside help, how did you get started?
RC: We contacted a local distributor who worked with a [third-party logistics] company that was next to him, and we started buying product the same day. Then we started marketing to cities and states near fulfillment centers, using all direct response marketing that we were able to optimize on the fly. Weâd buy the inventory as we sold it and we were doing almost everything ourselves, so if an order came in and we didnât have inventory, Iâd go buy the product and ship it out from a local Kinkos.
For the first couple of years, it was three guys and a call center.
TC: When did that change?
RC: We hit an inflection point where three [third party logistics companies] we were working with [were getting overwhelmed]. Weâd give them weekly or monthly projections so they could plan ahead and have warehouse space, but they didnât fully believe our growth and by the end of 2013, we had these 3PLs that couldnât scale any more, so we had to bring fulfillment in house.
We didnât know anything about this, so we hired a bunch of people who were experts in fulfillment and we flew to Mechanicsburg, Pa. to lease a 4,000-square-foot space, and within nine months or so, we became expert at doing fulfillment. It was risky. It was totally outside of our areas of competence. But by August of 2014, after breaking everything first, that center was humming along, and then we launched another in Reno, and at that point, we went national.
TC: How would you describe your hiring process?
RC: A lot of it was intuitive. I believe in the Warren Buffett model of treating people with respect and being honest and transparent with them. A lot of these people would come from Amazon and Wayfair after I went home at night and reached out to them after finding them on LinkedIn. Weâd jump on a call and weâd talk about this vision to build the largest pet retailer in the world, while focusing on delighting customers and being category experts. And all of my management team, they came from amazing companies and stable jobs, and they pulled their kids out of school to come to south Florida because they believed in me.
I was grateful they took that leap of faith, but it was also a huge responsibility, so I was going to fight even harder; I wasnât going to let them down.
TC: You say VCs werenât interested. How did you reach out to them, and how did you go about it?
RC: Almost from the beginning we reached out to investors, but I knew nothing about raising capital. I have no network. I come from a middle-class family. I donât have a rich uncle. We just started cold-calling VCs and I learned the hard way thatâs not how it works. [Laughs.]. I got turned down basically every single time, until Larry [Cheng of Volition Capital] invested, and it was not a competitive process.
TC: What convinced Larry to write you that first check?
RC: Weâd reached out to Volition six to nine months earlier and spoke to an associate who took down our information that went into a Salesforce database, and they followed up with us in late 2012. Weâd given them our projections and we were crushing our numbers. Larry was doing to Disneyland anyway with his family, so he decided to make a pitstop to meet with us. I remember he was like, âWho is going to take this company to $100 million in sales?â and I was like, âMe! Who do you think?â I looked very young at the time so I think I was easy to underestimate. Iâve been slightly aged now from Chewy.
But he gave us that needed credibility. Then Greenspring Associates â theyâre investors in Volition â came in to lead our Series B.
TC: Did you want to take the company public or were you hugely relieved when Petsmart came knocking?
RC: We were building a big company that inevitably was going to go public. Especially in those later years, weâd become âpublic company ready.â We built up our finance and accounting team; we had audited financials. Weâd raised a lot of capital â $350 million â we had a lot of discipline. We also had a lot of revenue. We went from $200 million in sales in 2014 to $3.5 billion in sales by 2018, and weâd burned through $130 million, but that cash burn was going to new customer acquisition and future fulfillment centers.
TC: So when you got that call from Petsmart . . .
RC: It was very fast. From the time I had a conversation with Raymond [Svider, the executive chairman of Petsmart] to the time he gave us a term sheet â and I was looking for an all-cash deal â the entire thing happened in 30 days, on our terms. We werenât going to go and open up the kimono unless we got comfortable, and we were comfortable with the entire transaction. TC: You stayed on for bit, though I gather you werenât locked up.
RC:Â I wasnât locked up at all. I could have left a day after the deal. I stayed but I felt like the teams were built and the systems and strategy were in place, and it felt like a fine-oiled machine. The business was at a significant scale. I just felt like my job was done. Iâd been at it for more than seven years, going 24/7. I gave my life to this thing. But I have a two-year-old today and just being with my family and being able to return to civilian life was [too irresistible after a point].
TC: Iâm a Chewy customer but Iâm not even sure why, except that itâs easy for me to re-order. Why do you think Iâm a Chewy customer?
RC: Because Chewy is the best in the business. It has the best selection, competitive pricing, fast shipping, excellent customer service and we know the product better than our competitors. If you need a weight loss product for your dog, weâll tell you which to buy. All Chewy does is sell pet products, and thatâs a big differentiator. E-commerce can feel like a series of faceless transactions; we wanted to recreate that feeling I use to enjoy at the pet store, shopping with a pet parent who I trusted. And we did that at scale, which is hard, but we stayed focused.
TC: How are you feeling about the IPO?
RC: It feels like my baby is graduating from the college that I never went to.
TC: There are concerns over the fact that Chewy remains unprofitable. Do you worry that, as a publicly traded company, Chewy might have to charge for shipping, for example?
RC: Itâs not profitable because itâs continuing to execute on scale and market leadership. If you reduce your marketing and decide you donât want to grow as much, the could have been profitable years ago. The underlying company is profitable.
TC: What about the fact that Amazon and Walmart are expanding their own pet product offerings?
RC: Amazon made us fight really hard. Obviously, theyâre a fierce competitor. But I donât think it was the category that made us successful. I think it was delighting our customers. You focus on that and youâre doing to do just fine.
TC: Youâre a young guy. Are you retiring?
RC: Retirement is overrated.
Iâm lucky. Iâm talking to a lot of different entrepreneurs and business and looking at corporate board opportunities. Iâm going through that exploratory process.
TC: Would you partner again with Michael on a different e-commerce business or maybe a venture outfit?
RC: Weâre really close. It needs to be the right opportunity obviously, and we need to be picky. But I have no plans to sit in retirement, thatâs for sure. Iâm 33 and Iâm competitive and I like consumer businesses and I like to win.
