I love every second of this scene. We often celebrate TK & Paul’s responses, but I could also watch Judd’s “No.” a thousand more times and be impressed. It’s simple, it’s emphatic, but it’s not overtly snide. He has no problem trolling his team to be open-minded about barbacoa, but Judd doesn’t know this woman. No insults, just no. So many good lessons and comedy here.

It's a rainy afternoon in New York, raindrops falling furiously against the pavement. You're looking out the cab window at the city and wondering what exactly you're going to say to Harry.

That you like him more than just a friend?, that you are in love with him?, that you can't forget the taste of his lips?.

Your hands sweat and you try to wipe them on the denim of your pants, maybe you should have waited until the rain stopped; but it would have been too long and you could no longer keep that feeling that was eating you alive.

Then you see the characteristic building where Harry's apartment is, right next to the Chinese restaurant.

Your stomach does its thing, because you feel a churning inside; as if you were about to vomit the pasta and salad you ate for lunch.

"Here it is..." You say in a calm tone, almost nervous because you know what's coming.

"Okay, that's $5.24." The driver turns to look at you and you hold out the cash.

You say thank you before getting out of the cab, then walk with the rain soaking your clothes and hair, you don't pay much attention to it. When you're inside the building, you greet the doorman and a 50-year-old divorced man. He gives you a warm smile that somehow gives you some confidence.

You make your way to the elevator and press the button with the number 7, then the doors close in front of you.

"Harry, I love you..."

"Harry, I am in love with you."

"Harry, i wanna be more than just friends..."

The little bell in the elevator makes you close your mouth, you feel your heart pounding hard in your chest and that at any moment it's going to burst out of you, run to Harry and stay with him.

Yes, that's exactly what you feel.

Your eyes wander over the numbers on the corridor doors.

122, 124, 126, 128...

Until you finally see the number in gold on the white wood of the door. 131 on the 7th floor. Your hands tremble, one of them knocks 3 times on it. Your breath catches a couple of times and you almost feel suffocated.

Suddenly it's hot, no matter that the weather outside is the opposite. You feel your body covered by a thin layer of sweat and that you need a glass of water because your mouth is so dry that it is difficult to swallow saliva.

Then Harry opens the door.

"Hey y/n..."

"Hi."

You have to speak, you know you have to say another word but the dryness in your mouth doesn't help.

"I umm, can I come in?" you ask him as you settle your bag on your shoulder.

"Uh, yeah sure. Come in." Harry opens the door further and steps aside to allow you access.

You enter after a deep sigh, your feet walk inside the apartment and inspect the place, you remember every detail and it's not because you've been there many times, but you like to observe.

"Would you like something to drink?" Harry asks

And thank god for that.

"Yes, please. A glass of water would be enough."

You see him walk to the kitchen where he opens the small wooden drawer and takes out a crystal glass; then he goes to the refrigerator and presses the small lever with the glass, the water begins to fill it and you feel anxious to feel the liquid pass you parched throat.

You stop looking at him to go and sit on the black leather couch, you once sat in that very spot. That night where you and Harry talked late into the night, you remember his sleepy eyes, the sound of his voice slightly deeper which was probably due to tiredness.

"Here you go." He's in front of you, looking handsome as hell and he's extending the crystal glass to you.

"Thank you" You say as you take it and your fingers barely brush against his hand. You bring the glass to your lips and begin to sip the clear liquid, your throat feeling cool and ready to talk as Harry sits on the other side of the couch, watching you drink.

"You were thirsty, huh?"

You look at him and notice that he is completely relaxed, the complete opposite of you. His hand is made into a fist holding his head and his tattooed arm is leaning back against the backrest, on the other hand, you are sitting up straight and almost tense. When you realize you're done with the water, you take the glass between your thighs and your fingers play with the border of the glass.

"So you came all the way to my apartment just to ask me for a glass of water?" Harry asks you graciously, he has a small smile plastered on his perfect face.

"No. I actually came to...umm." Great, your throat is dry again, or actually it's just a pretext not to confess to him that you're in love with him. "I came to tell you something, Harry."

Your hands clench the crystal glass, you know that if you don't measure your strength; you can break it and suffer serious injuries.

"Tell me what?"

"I'm kind of like..."

You raise your gaze to him, your eyes studying the details of his face and make the mistake of moving down to his lips, they look more appetizing than any other day. You move closer to him, at an extremely dangerous distance, that kind of distance where there is no turning back anymore; where distance is no longer distance because your lips are pressed to Harry's.

The crystal glass slips from your hand into a space that gets caught between the couch and his thigh. It feels good, it feels so good that you swear it can touch the sky with your fingertips and then you fall. You are falling into a huge void when you feel the hands on your shoulders pull you away from that glorious kiss.

"I'm in love with you, Harry."

There it is, you finally say it.

But now you swear if you're going to throw up when she sees the expression on Harry's face.

"Y/n...I-" You take your seat away from him again, staring into that gorgeous man's eyes. "I can't."

Your world is falling apart, it's crumbling in front of you and you can't do anything to stop it.

"Listen, I'm dating Beth and well we've been in a relationship for something like 5 years, I'm going to ask her to marry me."

You can't cry now, of course not. You feel that lump in your throat, it's choking you and you really need to get out.

"I can't leave her... I'm sorry, if I misled you about how I felt. I felt that way for a moment too." Then he felt it, for a moment Harry felt he was in love with you. "But I gave myself some time to think it through and it turned out to be a confusion, you know. Maybe it's happening the same with you, love."

You don't want him to call you that right now, you can't do it. Besides, you know you’re not confused, you're in love with Harry and you're sure of it.

"There are so many guys behind you, meet new people and you'll see there are better matches than me..." He chuckles, in a failed attempt to lighten the mood.

"Yes, I think so" You reply "I...I have to go now, it was a bad idea to come here."

From where you are, the door seems so far away, as if they don't want to let you escape from that place.

"Hey, let me take you home. The rain won't stop for a while and I can't let you leave like this " You hear him say.

Harry is about to approach you, then you react in a sudden movement that makes you fall and hit your forehead with the edge of the coffee table in the living room.

“Dammit.” You curse

“Are you okay?, here. Let me help you-” Harry takes you by the waist to help you sit on the couch “I’ll go get my aid-kit. Wait here.” He tells you before disappearing again and when you think you are able to run away.

You do, you bolt off the couch towards the door to run away from the apartment, your heart shattering in your hands and your world falling apart.

Harry doesn't love you like you wish he did.

Sun Wukong's 500 Years in Hell

Chapter seven of Journey to the West (Xiyouji, 西遊記, 1592) ends with the Monkey King being imprisoned under Five Elements Mountain (Wuxing shan, 五行山). Many people forget that this was only half of his punishment:

[The Buddha told the guards that they were] to feed the prisoner with [hot] iron pellets when he was hungry and to give him melted copper to drink when he was thirsty (Wu & Yu, 2012, vol. 1, p. 199). 但他饑時，與他鐵丸子吃；渴時，與他溶化的銅汁飲。

This hellish diet comes directly from Buddhist canon. For example, the Dīrghāgama (Sk: दीर्घागम; Ch: Chang Ahun Jing, 長阿含經; “The Collection of Long Scriptures”) states that these are respective punishments from the Hells of Hunger [Ji, 飢] and Thirst [Ke, 渴] (Howard, 1986, p. 131). For more info, see my previous article.

Shao (1997) explains that the term "Five Elements/Phases" (Wuxing, 五行) is used in JTTW and Buddho-Daoist doctrine to represent mortality. For example, Monkey complains to the judges of hell in chapter three that he is no longer subject to death since he has achieved the Daoist elixir, thereby breaking free of the five elements. His imprisonment beneath Five Elements Mountain and hellish diet are therefore clues that the Buddha is punishing Sun to a symbolic death and afterlife. [1] His subsequent release in chapter 14 can then be viewed as a symbolic reincarnation, which completes the cycle of:

death -> karmic punishment -> rebirth

Remember that the novel states time and time again Monkey was under the mountain for 500 years. Although internal story details suggest it was actually over 600 years, it's important to remember that 500 is used in Buddhist doctrine to denote a large number (Zhao, 2021, p. 126). So, maybe the novel was just implying that Monkey was punished for a really long time.

WIP Wednesday

18,000 words in . . . . oh hey, I think I’ve figured out what was stolen, and how, and most of why (have not yet figured out how to extricate everyone from the tangle I’ve left them in).  Now I just need several uninterrupted days to write it.

Have an angsty bit in the mean time.

His father follows him home though, and Carlos can’t remember the last time his father was here, at the townhouse, and he sees his father catalog all the ways TK has imprinted himself here - the new blanket across the back of the couch, because TK always gets cold when he watches TV; the row of vitamin bottles on the kitchen counter, because TK might not want to admit it, but he's his father's son; the plate left on the coffee table from where TK had eaten breakfast that morning and forgotten to put it in the sink.  If they went upstairs his father would find more evidence of a life shared - TK has drawers in his dresser, and probably more clothes in Carlos's closet than he does in the closet in his room at his father's house.  There are stacks of books on both sides of the bed, and chargers on both night tables, and a glass of water on TK's side because he wakes up thirsty.  TK's running shoes are on the mat in the hallway, and one of his hoodies is hanging on the rack by the door.

"You said this isn't how you wanted to tell me, but were you ever going to tell us?"

He swings around from staring at where the microwave is heating up leftovers from last night's dinner because the last time he ate was lunch and that was more than half a day ago.  "What?"

His father gestures around the condo, eye catching on a sketch TK had done of the 126 crew at game night that Carlos had put on the fridge over TK's red faced embarrassment.  "You've been dating him for a year, as far as I can tell he basically lives here.  Were you ever going to tell us you were dating him?  Were you going to get married and not invite us?  Have a family we never knew about?"

He turns back to the microwave, watching the time count down.  "I don't know," he says eventually.

He hears his father sit down heavily at the table, chair scraping across the floor.  "Was it something we said?"

He blinks and digs his nails into his palm to keep his voice level.  "What?"

"Mijo, was it something we said, your mother and I, that made you think you couldn't tell us?"

He turns sharply to stare at his father incredulously, but he seems sincerely upset and Carlos tightens his jaw.  "No.  It wasn't something you said."  The microwave dings and he pulls the tupperware out and hunts for a fork.  He stands at the counter eating out of the container, and gives up after two bites. "It wasn't something you said, because you’ve never said anything."

His father looks baffled.  "What?"

"You’ve never said anything.  Ten years since I came out to you and we've never talked about it.  You've never asked me anything, so I don't say anything because I assume you want it that way.  You don't get to be surprised now that I have a boyfriend if you've never asked me before."  He looks at the food and he's hungry but his stomach is a knot and knows he won't be able to eat anything and shoves it back in the fridge.

NURTURING THE CHRIST SEED WITHIN

Mark 4:26-29, "This is what the Kingdom of God is like. A man scatters seed on the ground. Night and day, whether he sleeps or gets up, the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.

All by itself the soil produces grain--first the stalk, then the head, then the full kernel in the head. As soon as the grain is ripe, he puts the sickle to it, because the harvest has come." Some have Divine seeds within their hearts they have nurtured for years, not knowing when their yield will come to fruition. What farmer would plant, without fully intending to see a mature crop as the fruit of his labor? The planter and the waterer can rejoice and anticipate the gathering, as in Psalms 126:6, "He who goes out weeping, carrying seed to sow, will return with songs of joy, carrying sheaves with him." Our great expectation is securely founded upon the promises of God. After all, the Scriptures proclaim God DOES make things grow, not God might make things grow.

Taking action ends dormancy, stirring up the life process hidden beneath their protective covering.

SOAKING THE SEEDS

Do we nurture Christ, the seed within us, realizing that as we are transformed into His image through affirming and meditating on His Word, and as the seed reaches maturity, we are the will of God "on earth as it is in Heaven?"

Or, does our flesh yet willfully contend for our own harvest?

Seeds soaked in hot water germinate very quickly.  After soaking in hot water, the sprouting and growth phase will accelerate. There can be a "suddenly" resulting from our yielding, to the ways of the Harvester.  The more we yield--the more we will yield (produce). And may we remember that purification often takes place in the desert where it seems dry and desolate. But, in truth, God is always "reigning" even in the desert where the Spirit may have led us. Rejoice, for "the parched land will be glad; the wilderness will burst into bloom." Isaiah 35:1 But as we go on our way, seeds can be choked by life's worries, riches, and pleasures, and they will not mature without soaking in the Living Water (Luke 8:14)..

WE NEED TO BE ASKING OURSELVES:

Do I really want growth?

Have I become dormant in the process of seeking my own comfort?

Do I remain inert, safe within my shell, because I know that growth most often creates tension? Remember, the enemy's purpose is to steal, kill, and destroy. Some seeds may be sluggish, complacent, or inactive, indicative of a slow death. The devil is coy and won't just kill the seeds instantly. Rather, he takes years deviously trying to mutate seeds of the righteous. However, the Good News promises Jesus has come to give life abundantly!

THE FIELDS ARE RIPE The Heavenlies are seeded with revelation on advancing God’s Kingdom NOW. The fields are ripe and harvest time is near. Are you parched? Do you feel dormant? The rain is coming--soak the seeds!

Turn away from anything that would take preeminence over God’s PURPOSE FOR YOUR LIFE. Allow Him to uproot anything in your garden that hinders the growth of your calling in Christ. Jesus provides water from His pierced side and again, as He promised, "You will be like a well-watered garden, like a spring whose waters never fail." Living Water, "reign" down on us!

Our Father promises in Revelation 21:6, "I will give to the thirsty the springs of the Water of Life--as a gift!" He says only to those who are thirsty will He give that gift. God never forces His Living Water on anyone. But, He does promise to fill those who are thirsty (Matthew 5:6).

Energy Drinks Are Surging. So Are Their Caffeine Levels. (NYT) It has been more than 25 years since Red Bull hit the market and introduced caffeinated energy drinks to the United States. While the company claimed its beverage would “give you wings,” it never said it was actually good for people. Yet as the energy drink market continues to grow rapidly, companies both new and old are trying to attract health-conscious customers with a wave of no-sugar, low-calorie drinks that claim to boost energy as well as replenish fluids with electrolytes and other ingredients. This new focus has helped the energy drink market grow, with sales in the United States surging to $19 billion from $12 billion over the past five years. But there are concerns that drinks being pitched as healthy are resulting in children and teenagers consuming caffeine in unhealthy amounts. A 12-ounce can of Prime Energy contains 200 milligrams of caffeine. That’s roughly equivalent to two Red Bulls, two cups of coffee or six cans of Coca-Cola. Some schools in Britain and Australia have already banned the beverages. In the United States, federal regulations say schools cannot sell or provide caffeinated drinks to elementary or middle school students, although many schools do not restrict what students can bring from home. “Not long after drinking them, the students showed up in the health office saying they didn’t feel good and that their hearts were racing,” said [one school nurse].

But last week, Arizona announced it would limit some future home construction in Buckeye and other places because of a shortfall in groundwater. A new state study found groundwater supplies in the Phoenix area were about 4 percent short of what is needed for planned growth over the next 100 years. Fun fact: I only know two things about my great grandad. One, he was from China, and two, when he met my great grandmother he said to her something along the lines of “you’re very fat.” Which from him was a complement. It got lost in cultural translation and her girlfriends threatens to kick his head in.

Your great grandmother told you the story.

You were young, probably four or five, when she turned off PBS and sat you down with all the solemn seriousness of some great tragedy.

Then she told you a story.

Pero Tovar, a mercenary— you had to ask what that meant— from Spain— you had to ask where that was— helped defeat nameless monsters at the Great Wall.

“The one in China?”

“Yes, sweetheart, that one.”

Something happened to him there, something beyond reason, a miracle or a curse— you asked how a miracle could be a curse— it has kept him alive these near thousand years— you still couldn’t count that high— and no one knows except for your family.

“Why only us?”

She booped your nose, “Because we were the only ones who noticed.”

When you got older, you learned that great grandad was the one who kept the story, but he told grandma before he left for war.

Everyone says he died on the battlefield, even though there were pictures of him back home after it was over.

You didn’t understand what that meant until later, and your heart still sometimes hurts for the man you never met.

For some reason the story stayed with you, even after only hearing it once. It lead to a somewhat obsessive phase with time traveling romances and history, your mother even joking that she didn’t just have you a bit late, but apparently centuries late.

You tried to slow down your rereads of Outlander after that.

Life happened, it stalled, you grew into a person via fits and starts, slowly chipping away at an AA until you suddenly had it but still had no clue what to do with it.

The bakery was supposed to be a pit stop, which insured that it would be anything but.

Grouchy four AM wake ups turned into tolerable ones, turned into excited ones. Your boss said you ran through the kitchen like a hurricane, but one that at least had the decency to pick up after itself.

You’d laugh and only slightly choke on the flour in the air.

Breads became muffins, then tarts, then pies, and occasionally even cakes. All of them simply presented but delicious nonetheless.

And time went on.

“I’m giving you first dibs.”

“First dibs on what?”

We are once again rubbing our gay hands all over Javier Peña, well not all over him, there’s some hand holding though.

Javier barely looks up from his files, “Thanks.”

“C’mon, you can’t catch any sicarros if you keel over.” Easily, you walk around his space, collecting papers and closing files, making neat stacks that don’t really have any system of organization.

The fact he doesn’t fight you is evidence enough that he needs to head home.

“Peña, when was the last time you slept?”

This close to him you can see the bags under his glazed eyes.

“When was the last time we fucked?” He has no concern for volume, just blurting out the question without any discretion, and you’re thankful that Steve has someone to drag him home at night.

“You’ve been running on coffee and cigarettes for three days?”

He shrugs, pointing to the opened bottle of whiskey on his desk.

“Adding whiskey to the list doesn’t make it any better.” Walking around you grab his chair and pull it back from his desk.

“Get up, we’re leaving.”

His continued lack of fighting just ratchets up your concern.

The taxi ride to the complex is quiet, and you tip the driver extra because he kept his opinions to himself.

“Gracias, buenas noches.”

The driver waves dismissively, more interested in the probably too large stack of bills you threw his way.

“You paid too much.”

Huffing, you begin walking to the complex proper, tugging Javier along.

“Probably, but you work too much.”

He just hums.

The trudge to his apartment is uneventful, but you keep your head low regardless.

“Bad for your back.”

“Hmm?”

You pat yourself down before remembering you handed him his keys, and instead of asking you just shove your hands in his pockets.

“Keeping your head down like that,” he lets out a small grunt as you manhandle him to reach his other pocket, “not good for your back.”

Not really romance, just a blurb that was rattling in my head the past two days.

“You aren’t what I was expecting.”

You raise an eyebrow, “What were you expecting?”

He’s pale and sweaty, the infection of his arm is obviously killing him.

“At best? Nothing.”

You nod along, death being a complete absence of all things is a common interpretation.

“And at worst?”

He huffs a laugh, and it sounds like it hurts, “The visage of all those I’ve wronged, a final conscious reminder of my mistakes before I suffer in the sulfurous plane of the damned.”

“You speak a lot for someone fighting a moving, necrotising infection.”

He laughs again, “My mind is loud and crowded, I need to make space for my thoughts somehow.”

You chuckle a bit, taking stock of the tent that doesn’t appear to be his, or at least it didn’t start that way.

“Do you look the same to everyone?”

“Hmm?”

“The face you wear, is it the same for every soul you reap, or do you change your looks to fit the circumstance?”

You shrug, because you really don’t know.

“I look how you need me to.”

He huffs another laugh, this one humorless, “Of course, what better salve then temptation?”

You tilt your head in confusion.

He laughs again, “My life to be taken by a creature so breathtaking.”

It’s an odd descriptor, but not unheard of. You’ve been described as bewitching, attractive, a siren for the damned, the list goes on. Rarely has the sentiment been expressed directly to your face.

“You aren’t dead yet, I’m here just in case.”

He makes a confused noise, eyes closed and head tilted back.

“There’s still some wind in your sails, and Free Will means so few things are certain, you might die here, you might not, there is still time for decisions to be made.”

“What are the decisions of a dying man?”

There is a flicker coming this way, frantic and flaring, bursts that steal your attention before almost vanishing back into the brush.

“Who said the decisions were yours alone?”

The spirit fades, taking a turn that leads it away from this tent.

Did you overreact? Yes, in hindsight you did. But at that moment you let slip that you’d seen him naked before, and the panic made running seem rational.

You’ve done more than just see him naked though.

Heat rises back to your face in shame as your mind decides to playback as many scenes of him as it can. Making you bite your lip as your stomach twists.

It’s some nondescript pool in the backyard of a house in an obviously well-off neighborhood.

The sky is clear and the sun is blinding, the light reflecting off of the small waves in the water caused by the breeze.

How you can see the flex of his arms as he heaves his own weight to the surface, the drops of water coming out of his hair, that second or two where the edge catches onto his waistband giving you an even better view of his happy trail.

Then he’s climbing out and walking out of frame as the title appears on the screen.

SO. you might have heard about the itch.io bundle for ukraine! which you can find here. the offer ends on the 18th (of march, 2022) i believe.

The proceeds for this bundle will go to two charities that work to help Ukraine, a very good reason to support it for just $10 already. but for that 10 dollars you'll also receive 992 games/a couple other miscellaneous things.

this post is me convincing you to buy it based on the exciting things in the bundle!

there are 573 'games', that is to say, digital games to be played on a device like a computer or phone (531 are compatible with windows, 291 compatible with macOS, 234 with linux, 30 with android and 20 are played in the browser)

now, since buying this bundle 4 days ago i've mostly looked at the other major category, 'physical games', physical here meaning you get a pdf or something of the sort and you use that to play the game. most of these are ttrpgs or can be used to enhance your ttrpg gaming experience. (ttrpg = games in the same category as dnd)

SO NOW I'LL GET TO THE MEAT OF THIS POST. the recommendations.

this game i've actually wanted for a little while, and seeing it in this bundle kind of solidified that i wanted to buy it. it's based on the powered by the apocalypse game rule thingies, which is a much easier system to learn than dnd, if my experience with monster of the week, which is based on the same system, is anything to go by. i've read the guidebook a little bit and it is very explicitly queer and anti-fascist and includes instructions for ensuring the mental safety of the players of the game.

on the search for a slightly improved Improved Disability Pride Flag

so. a couple hours ago @capricorn-0mnikorn answered an ask about the disability pride flag she made. it included an open request for people to try and make new images of this flag, fiddling with colour values and making more hi-res versions. i happen to know my way around a vector software, so i just spent some time fiddling and i have three things to share.

first off: the original in more pixels

i simply colourpicked from the original image and this is that. the dimensions are also slightly different, this is the dimensions that google tells me flags are typically in.

"Ivan Goncharov" this, "Nikolai Goncharov" that, when will you guys realize there's a reason we don't know his first name. the POINT is that we don't know. Goncharev is a family name and whoever Goncharov used to be totally went up in being the head of the Family. he doesn't HAVE a personal name to denote who he is outside of his mafia persona.
