murder time trio but they have different weapons
because only using an axe(/hatchet/bone thigh thingy) and knife is sosososo boring. and no magic doesn't count (looking at YOU dust.)
obviously dust would use a gun if he wasn't a lazy piece of shit. what type of gun he uses? idk bc im not gun fluent so for fhe sake of coolness (and convenience for me) he use all guns. hed probably take care of them like his babies. whenever he feels stressed hed be like "im going to my gun room" (WHAT. sorry im writing this at 4 am my brain isn't working right) horror and killer know hes pissed if they hear gunshots outside the house. hes not even hunting anything or wtvr hes just shooting to blow off steam
also i think that swords could also fit for dust too. but hed be too damn lazy to use a goddamn sword but lets ignore that for now. i just think it would be cool to see him use a sword. like imagine him doing a geno run with a sword and hes so sad and stuff but the sword is elegant as shit. and then when he sees rhe human he starts popping off and the sword gows crazy and RAAAAAAAHHHHHH hes so sword coded (what)
this is a really random idea but like... giant pickaxe killer. i was thinking about a mallet/hammer but i was like naaaahhh thats not killer enough. so sharpen the ends DUH. he would also use a ton of bombs because yes. i feel like he would have brass knuckles. ALSO ALSO idk if it works for him but a chakram would be siiiiiick for killer. bro spins around and immediately slices a bitch up is that NOT cool???? and imagine all the tricks he could do,,,,,
now for horror im not gonna say some bullshit answer like a greatsword because a. he would never use one and b. i just don't think it fits his character. instead may i get the change to bring up,,,, a chainsaw. A CHAINSAW. duuuude that would be so cool and it gives off the same vibes as an axe BUT MORE DERANGED. like imagine you're a tiny human who fell from the surface into horrortale and horror's hunting you down to bring to snowdin and in the forest all you can hear is the faint hum of his chainsaw. and it would be much gorier and bloodier and cooler (horror does not like all the blood. but in this hypothetical horrortale its the only weapon he has in the underground without wasting his magic so he has to suck it up)
also something i think would be cool for him is a chain. like just a straight up metal chain he uses. probably to choke people out and restrain them and break their bones by sheer blunt force, putting them into weird poses, or just flinging them around. no its not a whip he does not use it as a whip (he will choke you if you call it a whip) but i do think it would fit him (and be incredibly cool. me when horror sans pulls out the chains). also another short one but A CROSSBOW???? hunting parallels once again (bro is NOT a hunter (he was forced to be (he fucking forced himself to hunt humans?? tf are you on)))
#killer sans#horror sans#dust sans#murder time trio#is this a dumb hc or a random rant#thanks to honkai impact 3rd for sponsoring this post#i stole that chakram idea for killer from hi3#and the chainsaw and chains. im not creative#tricule rant

Yandere Big Brother Akaza x Child Reader | Human Mafia AU
“Uhm…Akaza?”
“Yes (Y/n).”
“Why is there a dead guy on the basement steps?”
You clinged on the railing staying on the last steps. Never before had you seen the dead, evil people outside the basement. This was new and kind of annoying. It was blocking your way! You had to get your lunch before an important-someone came to pick you up.
“Oh he’s not dead yet, he made a good attempt though.”
“Can you…please. I have to go.”
The man reluctantly dragged the bloody man back down the steps. Skipping over the blood streaks you grabbed your lunch from the table and bowed to the shrine in the nearby cupboard.
“Bye Muzan-sama.” You waved to the statue, before running out of the house and down the block. Standing in front of a random house you waited for the familiar sleek black car to come up and the door to swing open. You step in being sure to sit opposite to the blonde and redhaired man, Kyojuro Rengoku. For a while you didn’t speak, you waited for the detective. He was an adult after all.
“(Y/N)-CHAN! YOU’VE BEEN MEANING TO TELL US FOR A WHILE, HAVEN’T YOU?
“Y-yes.”
The man’s volume was definitely louder than what you were used to. Even Douma had never been incredibly loud when teasing but such is expected when you have no reason to hide.
“Uhm. Can we wait until we get to the cafe to talk? You’re kindof hurting my ears.``
“OF COURSE YOUNG ONE!”
You smiled as you looked out the tinted windows. You could never ask anyone that in the Kibitsuji meetings. You wanted to enjoy this forever.
____________________________________________________________
“Fu-fu-fu-” The upcoming teasing from his superior wasn’t unfamiliar. “-Oh Akaza-chan~ Guess what I saw?”
Akaza wanted to ignore him but the presence of Kokushibo and Nakime glaring at the interaction advised otherwise.
“What did you see, Douma-san?”
“Your little (Y/n)-chan at a cafe with some detectives. They were sat on one of the higher-ranked membes too~”
“W-what? Where?”
He grabbed his clothes and headed to the cafe Douma so eagerly giggled out. Why would you be skipping school? When did you start defying him? Do you know what you’d gotten yourself into?
__________________________________________________________
“He isn’t that bad, promise!”
“But he kill-” “Inosuke!”
“Fine, he does bad things to good people.”
“W-well I’m sure it was for a good reason. I-I know he really loves Muzan-sama but they don’t-”
“SORRY YOUNG ONE BUT THE TRUTH IS YOUR BROTHER’S A MURDERER! He may care for you but not about others. All his other friends are like this too and you should come with us to avoid coming in contact with them again.”
“But there my friends–I thought–maybe–”
“They won’t be, after you told on them. They’ll do the same thing that they did to the others.”
In astonished horror you covered your mouth and buckled down to rest your head on the cool glass of the cafe tables. You didn’t think it was a secret because everyone you ever spoke to thought it was normal. You weren’t normal, afterall.
____________________
Arriving at the cafe just in time to watch a detective drive off with you in the cop car. He puts his punch knuckles on and approaches the remaining training detectives. He swings to sock the one with red hair and the hanafuda earrings only to be blocked by the fiery-haired detective.
“YOU’RE BATTLE IS WITH ME, DEMON!”
“Did you abduct (Y/n)?! What the heck did you tell them?!”
“Everthing!”
“...I usually would have given you the choice to join our ranks but now I just want you to die!”
______________
“Uhm…Miss Cop?”
“What is it kid?”
“That was the turn for the police station…Are we going somewhere else?”
“Uh yeah–yeah–sure kid.”
“Uhm what branch did you say you were a part of?”
“You’re asking a lot of questions kid…Best you keep yer mouth shut.”
“But I don’t feel safe. Can I please leave or borrow your phone?”
“SHUT UP AND SIT STRAIGHT” Keeping one hand on the wheel she slaps your hand away from reaching for her phone on the dashboard. “You’re so lucky–and for such a little trash bag it seems everyone just wants you…”
“What are you talk–?”
“Why Can’t He Just Look At Me! At least I’d want to see him! I wouldn’t be running away like you!”
You shrink into your seat, fighting the urge to cry. She was being so mean.
She pulled up to the wall of the Douma residence blocking peering eyes from the massive japanese style compound. She didn’t bother to get you from the other side of the car instead she just latched onto the scruff of your shirt hauling you over the console and out of the driver’s side. She continued to pull you past the armed ‘welcomers’ and the attendant that guided the female cop dragging you through the maze of hallways. Finally stopping at an adourned doorway to fix her hair and police outfit before entering. There on a throne surrounded by pillows and offerings was Douma, a familiar but now-horrifying face.
“(Y/n)-chan!!! We were all so worried! Even your brother ran to save you right away!” He had opened his arms to welcome you, bending down slightly.
You didn’t want to go but the not-so-subtle shove from the cop pushed you to stumble just before the throne. Slowly stepping over the gifts and pillows you hesitantly come close to his grand chair.
“Uhm am I in troub–”
He easily wedged his hands under your armpits, hoisting you into his lap, cradling you like a baby.
“It's been too long since I’ve seen you darling!”
You tried to speak but everything was muffled from the smothering that was being done by the minor cult leader. During his rubbing of your faces together he looks to see the irritated skin of your hand; he also notes the scarring on the heels of your feet. Holding you tight, back to his chest, he calls to his attendant.
“Would you mind giving her the gift, for all her hardwork?”
“Of course sir.” The attendant grabbed the arm of the enamored police officer moving the other hand to something behind her belt. You tense, and Douma notices that. So you know now.
“In the foyer. Go.” The attendant stopped their movement bowing before escorting the woman out. You two sat in the silence of the room. You unknowingly started to tremble, turning to face Douma.
“Ah–will I have to die too?”
“You’re so smart, you would’ve figured it out eventually.”
He seemed to ignore your question, as stubborn as you were, you were going to ask again. He stopped you with his hand wrapping around your face, he smiled seeing you struggle to look properly at him.
“Usually you would. But lucky you, your brother fights loads harder when you're involved.” He manuevered his hand to squeeze your cheeks, continuing even as your little hands tried to push him away. “Not to mention, Master’s favorite little investment.”
“Whas an invwestmen?” You tried to speak despite the pressure on your mouth.
“A good thing for you.” He moved his hand to hold your little face. “I’m in charge of your re-training.”
“Retraining?”
“Yup! You flinch and react to the death of unchosen ones.”
“What do you mean?” As if on cue the sound of a shot rang out followed by a scream then another shot. You couldn’t stop the tears that bubbled down your chubby cheeks, the involuntary jumping of your body with the muffled sound of the shot; looking up at Douma who seemed to be smiling even wider than before. You would be perfect by the time he was done.

It was scary when the lights turnt on in the middle of the night - the first night. Then it got old and it got old fast. After staying in your first starter home for less than four days you’ve come to realize that your real estate agent omitted some key factors in selling you this house. It indeed was too good to be true, and you now know never to skip out on the inspection just because you’re eager. To be fair most of the issues are quick fixes.
One: There’s a faucet leak in the bathroom.
Two: The weakness in the floorboards.
Three: The backed up toilet that constantly overflows.
Four: The smell drifting from the locked room behind the kitchen that the agent said she didn’t have the key to.
Five: The draft coming from all areas of the house.
Six: The fucking ghost in the house.
At first the negative energy that would seep through every step you took in the house was easily ignored, but slowly it became more overbearing. Like a thick and uncomfortable weighted blanket suffocating you. It felt like the more you lived in your home the less oxygen you were able to take in. Like a pressure sitting upon your chest with no intentions of being removed.
When you would wake up to get a glass of water, your spine would tingle as if somebody was breathing in your ear.
The air is always uncomfortably humid and hot despite it being only March. You woke up in pools of sweat, always hot. You run fans constantly to drown out the wet air with coolness from outside, you run fans in order to drown out the sounds in the night as well.
After taking a shower you swore you saw somebody standing near the mirror as you dried your hair, sometimes you’d hear laughter when you watched TV. Once you swore you were tripped, and the evidence kept mounting. Your food would go missing, a shoe misplaced, your wallet once emptied of its’ contents yet nothing missing. Just cards and cash spilled in the entry way to the front door.
You weren’t scared, more annoyed than anything. You figured your ghost was a very rude little boy.
The screams are getting louder this week. Before they were a low, rattling hum throughout your skull but now it’s auditory around your home.
“Alright, Ghost-kun. It’s 3 AM and I have a presentation tomorrow. Cut it out or go to hell.” You bitterly grumble out loud as the offensively noisy crash in your kitchen gets even harder to ignore. It’s like this fucking ghost is messing up all your shit just to get on your nerves. You’ve stopped doing more than putting up the bare minimum since every 3 AM it’s the same song and dance.
The chaos follows into the room, as if somebody slipt while running and fell in the hall. Your door slowly creaks open as you toss in your futon. It’s still so damn hot!
“Ghost-kun?” You hear a voice call out in the air of the night. “That’s not my name...and it’s not like I want to be here still! If I could, I would’ve left by now.” You can’t see who’s speaking even with the lights now turned on.
If those ghost hunting shows could hear this shit they would be a million times more popular. This is the first time he’s actually spoken back to you, so you jolt up in surprise. As you do this, you phase through his incorporeal figure. The sensation was akin to dunking your head underwater, cold and unable to breathe.
“Whoa!” You shout, as he laughs obnoxiously. “Heheh, didn’t think I was real huh?”
With all of your emotional strength maxed out you do not scream. Instead you try to focus on the spirit floating above you. “Ah, I must be dreaming.” You say quietly, thinking back to the medication you took that night. “That must be it.” You say snuggling back into the futon. This feels so real, but dreams often do in the moment.
“Aww, don’t go back to sleep! I’m so booreed!” The voice whines, pulling the blanket off of you.
Instantly feeling cold once more you thought, ‘motherfucker!’ but refrained from cursing out loud.
“C’moon, wake up! You can skip work tomorrow, right? This is the first time anybody’s talked to me in a long time! Hey, let’s get to know each other better!”
You groaned, of course ghosts have to be real! Of course they're also needy and annoying.
Eight months, you’ve been putting up with this shit for eight months and tonight is the night Ghost-kun actually answers? Maybe you should have listened and paid the extra fee to have the house blessed.
Your eyes barely make out a translucent figure floating above you, you move to throttle him and your hand feels like it’s been doused in cold water. Is this the ectoplasm people talk about?
“Ne, what do you say? I’m really lonely you know.” He continues to whine and you’re already irritated with both yourself and him.
“You’re lonely?” You ask, unable to shake the bitter attitude in your question. “Yeah, of course! I’ve been here by myself for a while now.” His voice sounds jokingly pained until he seriously follows up with. “You won’t move, right?”
“I’ve been here for almost a year putting up with your shit.” You tell him harshly, you can’t sell this place even if you wanted to. You don’t plan to die with a mortage and rent either.
“Yeah, but I’ve basically been asleep right? That’s what it feels like at least. Or maybe I took a big shit and when I got outta the bathroom everything was different. Either way, I missed a lot of stuff.” The ghost explains and you want to correct him, no Ghost-kun has been a nuance since the get-go. From the day you moved in until now.
Ugh...what are you gonna do? Should you set boundaries now or later? He seems very lonely but you have work!
“Listen, Ghost-san.” You began hoping to be respectful.
“Osomatsu.” The ghost corrects, and you sigh. “Osomatsu-san, I have work tomorrow. It’s a very important presentation and if I don’t get a good night’s rest I won’t be able to afford to live here anymore. Do you understand?”
You feel like you’re dealing with a spoiled child, but he seems to get the message loud and clear.
“Alright! I’ll let you sleep, and tomorrow you’ll come home and we’ll talk more. You have to promise not to move though!” The air begins to feel notably cooler as if dependent on Osomatsu’s mood.
You think it over, and maybe it’s the exhaustion of not being able to sleep for almost a week but you nod. Every night the crashes were ecalating which was disrupting your REM cycle. “Okay, I won’t move. UNLESS you let me sleep when I lay down! We’ll be sorta like roommates.”
Osomatsu cheers loudly, and the lights flash on and off with his rambunctious energy.
When you woke up the next day, your eyes drift open to see a figure breathing next to you peacefully. He looked ethereal with thick eyelashes fluttering with each breath. Your mind slowly wondered, ‘If he’s dead then why does he breathe? Is he really asleep?’
Still half asleep you reached out to touch him for no reason other than wanting to. To feel if he’s real, or at least lying. When your hand is freezing and wet again, Osomatsu wakes up with a sleepy and incredibly adorable grin.
“You must like me, huh?”
You felt yourself flush at this accusation. “Hey, do you have a boyfriend?” Osomatsu asks sitting up but his voice is still tired.
“No.”
“Lucky!” He cheers for himself once more, “I can be your boyfriend!”
You take a moment to really study Osomatsu, he’s wearing a red hoodie that seems to have a mysterious stain coming from his chest, a hair cut only a mother could provide, and is actually pretty cute. Your friend’s voice pops in your head telling you, “bitch what are you doing?”
Boundaries, you think. “Let’s get to know each other first.”
“That’s not a no!” Osomatsu hops out of the bed just as you’re getting up to stretch.
“What’s your name?” Osomatsu ask sweetly, “Y/N.”
“Y/N, I was just wondering why you’re not more weirded out by all of this? I’m a ghost after all. Shouldn’t you be scared?” Osomatsu floats around your head as you make your bed.
“I was never very easy to scare, I guess.”
“Oh really?” Osomatsu mischievously asks, before getting closer to you. He pulls a face that in your line of sight that would have been scary if you weren’t expecting it, but the mirth in his voice beforehand clued you in. “Ah, very scary.”
You say, glancing his way before leaving the room. You start your day with Osomatsu on your mind.
Having Osomatsu as an undead roommate isn’t too terrible. He’s actually very pervy and will absolutely make a mess of your pots and pans when he’s bored. Like a destructive dog. But he isn't the worst person to live with.
You get to know him better when you came home that day, and that’s how your unfortunate relationship with a dead man-child began.
The crashes coming from the kitchen were explained as, “I was just trying to get your attention.” With a cackle and a finger under his nose, “Guess it worked!” They mostly stopped after that day aside from the occasional thrashing sound that happens everyday at 3:49:23 AM. You timed it everyday for a week, and when it’s over Osomatsu comes to your room. It doesn’t stop escalating, not until your 11thmonth living there.
Like he needs comfort. It takes you awhile to realize that’s what he needed, with his stupid positive attitude and loud laughter. You’re piecing together that he’s not being completely honest with you when his laughter begins to sound strained and ends abruptly. You shift your sleeping schedule around him, one of Osomatsu’s many accomodations in your home.
“Osomatsu, are you okay?” You ask one night after he comes into your room silently. “Yeah.” He says with a vast loneliness in his voice. That scream you heard just now made you flinch. You could feel the pain from it radiating from your ears down to your chest. It felt as if a knife pierced your heart, it twisted.
“Do you want to talk about it?”
“No.” With the same exact tone, “I-is...is there anything I can do to help?” The lights flick on, and the negative energy fills the room like a heavy burden. “No.” Osomatsu says with such animosity you can barely comprehend it. The imaginary wound bleeds as your heart pumps blood.
He floats in the middle of the room, clutching his chest as if he’s in pain. You mirror his actions, it hurts. Why does it hurt?In his translucent form you can see the stain looking much more saturated and real than anything else. In your own coporeal form you can feel the warmth of blood staining your hands, you can feel the cold handle of the knife extending past your ribs. Within seconds he laughs, it sounds fake again before saying, “Why don’t we go to bed?”
All at once the pain is gone. You don’t want to react outwardly because it’s only been three minutes, your hands aren’t stained red like they should be. You’re disorientated but lucid. You don’t need to think about that further as your vision clears and the knife is pulled out.
You frown, and make room for Osomatsu in the futon knowinghe doesn’t want to talk about this issue. But this isn’t your problem, and you want to support him but you can’t be his therapist. Osomatsu crawls into place before speaking in a quiet voice, “This was my home before I died.”
You try not to audibly gasp, of course it’s impossible for a house that wasn’t a new construction not to have at least one death in it. Still, to imagine that Osomatsu must have died here is depressing. The people who sold you the house seemed very nice when you signed the paperwork. Maybe too nice, you think suspiciously. Maybe they killed their son. Maybe they let him die here.
Maybe he died alone, maybe he died surrounded by others. Was it an accident, was it on purpose? Was that knife literal or figurative? Was that his or your own death? You have questions. Osomatsu has answers.
“You don’t have to talk about this if it’s too hard.” You say, moving closer to him. You’re afraid to touch him or else you’ll get more of that wet sensation. You’re looking at him from your profile, staring into his brown eyes in a way you hope is supportive. You’re not even sure if you want to hear about his grizzly death.
As if reading your mind, he smiles, “Don’t worry, I won’t talk about how I died. I just want to…” You wait for him to continue, “I just want to sleep in the same futon as somebody again. Ahh, how lame right?”
You shake your head in the dark, "No it isn't."
After a moment you add, “Besides you’re next to me right now.” Osomatsu’s smile is light and genuine, he almost looks as vulnerable as a child.
“Thanks Y/N, I really like you.”
You feel your anxiety bubble over into a much sweeter emotion. Thinking about the time you’ve spent with Osomatsu over these past few months, you’ve grown to like him as well. It’s only at closer to 4AM than not that Osomatsu makes you nervous. At almost all other times you’re so calm, he brings you a great sense of comfort in multiple ways.
Watching TV with Osomatsu, playing games he can interact with, telling each other jokes and just generally being good friends has not only fixed the oppressive fog over him but also has helped you a lot too.
Your presentations have been going a lot smoother, you’ve been sleeping easier, and have just generally been happier since moving in and making contact with Osomatsu. You don’t want to fix his pain, you just want to acknowledge it’s existance. You enjoy spending time with Osomatsu and would not mind sharing the burden of trauma with him if he needs you to.
“I think I like you too,” You giggle lightly. “Huh? Really?!” You nod, minding your hands so you don’t get flushed with the wet goopy feeling again.
“Yaay!” He cheers, kicking off the blankets. “Whoa!” You gasp,
“Can I kiss you? Please, please?!”
You pause for a second, wondering if it would be worth the sensation to kiss Osomatsu. Your romantic heart wins, and you nod and sit up. Osomatsu hovers over you in his excitement before planting a...surprisingly normal kiss on your lips.
No cold sensation, you can breathe, and your face doesn’t feel like it was just hit with the slime from Double Dare.
“Osomatsu, we can kiss?!” You pull back, causing him to cackle. “Yeah, of course. I can be solid if I really concentrate. Isn’t that cool?”
You go to shove him while laughing when your hand feels his shoulder, “I guess so, now keep concentrating.” You kiss him once more, still giggling.

HELLO. MAY I PLEASE HEAR MORE OF YOUR VAMPIRE AU…. 👉👈
OH MY GOD I'M SO GLAD YOU ASKED THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU
Okay, SO. BUCKLE THE FUCKLE UP 'CUZ here's what I've got so far:
Nishiki and Kiryu are still orphans at Sunflower. They come from a tiny village just a few kilometres west from the orphanage. It's a very close and closed-off community. The boys' parents died in a fire when they were very little (which is a common theme for the kids at Sunflower and isn't that a crazy coincidence? *smiles mysteriously*), however the Nishikiyama family house wasn't as badly damaged as Kiryu's so it's just sitting there, waiting for its former residents to reclaim ownership as soon as they're able to (I imagine Kazama would help them with that).
In the next years it becomes a home for Nishiki, Yuko and Kiryu (and Yumi, too, though she feels like a visitor for the most part) in everything but name. It's their hangout spot, their "base of operations", their not-so-secret meeting place. When Yuko's health deteriorates so much that she can't stay at Sunflower anymore, the siblings actually properly move in to make arranging the doctor's visits easier.
It's Nishiki's 17th birthday and all three of them are celebrating and playing games and eating cake and having a good time at the edge of the woods not far from the Nishikiyama residence. They're young and loud and stupid (and ignoring the fact that several people went missing over the course of the last few months) and if Nishiki's heart beats a little too hard in his chest when Kiryu gives him his gift - a beautiful, heavy silver pendant on a slightly-worn leather cord - he doesn't think about it too much (and if he notices that Kiryu stares at him just a bit longer than usual without saying a single word but his gaze is so, so, SO fond-- he doesn't think about it either). (he leaves these kinds of thoughts for restless nights because thinking about his best friend in that way during the day... it hurts. the hurt is good sometimes but it's overwhelming).
They're drunk on the cheap beer they've smuggled from Gen-san's fridge and high on happiness. Unaware that the very same night it would all go crashing down.
At some point they all quiet down and go a little further into the woods than they normally would but no one pays any mind to that. And when suddenly their trio turns into a duo with the sudden absence of the birthday boy himself no one immediately starts panicking. He's been gone for ten minutes, twenty, half an hour. Kiryu tells Yuko to go back to the village, to gather everyone, make them start a search party or something while he keeps looking for her brother (the only things he'll find are the pendant he's gifted to Nishiki with the leather cord torn and the broken shards of his own hope). They never find him.
A year goes by and they hold a funeral for Nishikiyama Akira. Even though there's no body for them to bury. Yuko doesn't cry (she doesn't believe he's really dead). Neither does Kiryu (he used all of his tears up that night, the guilt choking him, and the night after that, and the night after that, and the night-). Yumi does, however. And the nice old lady who gave both Nishiki and Kiryu money for helping her do chores around the house. And the man who gave Nishikiyama a part-time job at his shop (to put at least something towards the cost of his sister's treatment, he felt so indebted to Kazama, and that debt weighed down on him). And a few of the girls and boys from Sunflower too.
Another two years pass. Kiryu moves away to the big city at the behest of Kazama. "It's important for you to continue your education," he says. ("It's important for you to move on," he keeps these words to himself). Kiryu really tries his best. Even makes a few friends (although he's still on the fence about whether he can actually call Oda his friend). It goes as well as it could have considering his circumstances. They say that time heals but Kazuma Kiryu never finds out if there's any truth to those words because he recieves a very short letter - an invitation, actually. To another funeral. But this time it's Yuko they're burying. This time they actually have a body to bury.
Tachibana offers his condolences. Oda offers him a ride to the village and back. Kiryu accepts both.
He can't help but compare this funeral to the last one he's been to. There are fewer people. Fewer tears, too. More flowers. It's quieter and feels something like closure (in truth, it's anything but). Yuko also left behind a will (more like a bunch of wishes since it wasn't an official document but the community decided to honour them anyway). Almost all of her possessions went to the kids from Sunflower, except for the Nishikiyama family house (which on paper actually belonged to Shintaro Kazama) which she left to Kiryu. He can't quite believe it when he hears it and feels his heart break under the onslaught of childhood memories. Still, he goes there later that evening. He finds that little has changed in the time he spent away from the house, from the village, from... all of this, really. There are the same pictures on the walls collecting only slightly less dust. The same books on the shelves and under the broken legs of the old pieces of furniture. The same medicine bottles and equipment in the bedroom, though doubled in quantity. Kiryu's not as devastated as he thought he'd be when he walks around what he used to call his home.
He goes through all the rooms, taking notes of every single thing he finds and every single thing he doesn't. He probably misses a bunch of things (he's not as good at that sort of thing, Nishiki's always had a much better eye for details). Once back outside, he looks for the secret stash they made back when they were teenagers. It's like going through a time capsule. There's a pack of cigarettes he and Nishiki once stole from the teacher's bag, copybooks filled with ugly doodles, dreams for the future and dried flowers and leaves, caps from soda bottles, rocks they thought looked cool, photos and birthday cards damaged by time and weather... the pendant Kiryu gave to Nishiki the last time they saw each other. And a small notebook Kiryu's never seen before. A diary of sorts, a recounting of their days together and their days apart. The handwriting is unmistakingly Yuko's.
It fills him with nostalgia, tears welling up in his eyes, unshed. His heart sinks when he finally reaches the pages where Yuko recounts the last few weeks before she-
She writes about her brother, which is understandable. What's less understandable is the fact that she speaks of him as though he was there, with her. Physically present. Kiryu could chalk it up to the girl being delusional in her dying moments but it doesn't feel right to do so. It's stupid, it's absolutely impossible, he's confused, he's hopeful, why would Yuko hide her notebook there?
The last page. A message. For Kiryu. "Please, Kazuma-kun, help my brother".
Against his better judgement, Kiryu decides to spend the night in the house. Sleep doesn't come to him but that's fine. He sits in the living room, trying to make sense of everything. He sits there until it's way past midnight, until the distant barking of the dogs quiets down, until the rustling of leaves stops, until the very air around him grows still and silent and somehow charged with strange energy. And then he hears it. Three uncertain taps against the window. Kiryu turns his head. It's him.
"Kiryu... Let me in. Please."
He does, without thinking. (He could never very well say no to Nishiki. Even if it got them both in trouble. Even if he's not real.)
The quiet is deafening. It really is him. His best friend (whom he thought dead). His kyoudai. Before Nishiki could say anything, Kiryu wraps him in a tight hug. The only heartbeat between them is Kiryu's own, thundering against his ribs. Nishikiyama doesn't let the hug last, putting some distance between them. He looks guilty, tired; looks at Kiryu with sadness, with longing and something else that he can't quite decipher yet (and it makes him scared but why?). Nishiki also looks older than Kiryu remembers. Not a 17-year-old boy anymore, no. About the same age that Kiryu is now.
Has his gaze always been so sharp? Have his fangs always been this pronounced?
They talk until their throats are hoarse. Until Nishiki pulls out a bottle with some liquid that smells strongly of iron and drinks from it and in that moment Kiryu believes everything his friend has told him. It's crazy, but he does.
Nishiki was abducted that night. Taken from them. By vampires. They hurt him. Forced him to fight other humans (just like him then) for his survival. They fed on him.
It went on and on and on... Days turned into weeks, turned into months, turned into years. Only thoughts of Yuko, and Kiryu, and Yumi kept him going. He wanted to see them again. He hoped he would. That hope was crushed when Nishikiyama met his match in the arena. No, not his match. Someone far stronger. He lost and was tossed out to die. But another vampire saved him. It was a woman, whose face he saw often among the spectators of his fights. She stood out from the crowd, since she never cheered for any of the humans. Never put any bets. Only looked at all that madness with quiet horror. "Reina" she said her name was.
She gave Nishiki blood. Her own blood, and the blood of the vampires that were much stronger and more powerful than her (but not wiser), and human blood.
He turned and it was even worse than the years of anguish he had experienced. The pain and constant thirst almost drove him mad until he was taught to deal with them.
Nishiki was given a second chance. He escaped. And ever since that moment he's been trying his damndest to help other victims of those monsters. Both, the poor imprisoned souls and the villagers who might have shared his fate otherwise.
THAT CONCLUDES MY MAD RAMBLINGS BECAUSE I HAVEN'T THOUGHT OUT WHAT HAPPENS NEXT THAT WELL
also i don't remember the last time i wrote this much in one sitting and i'm tireeeeeed. i'm not cut out to be a writer and it shows nghghghhhhhh
but! but! but! i have a couple thoughts on where the story goes:
kiryu decides to stay in the village and help nishiki
they uncover the vampires evil plans and recruit a few other characters to fight on the side of JUSTICE (i.e. kazama, who up to that point has been kind of in cahoots with the vamps - hence trying to atone by means of creating the Sunflower orphanage; kashiwagi; yumi; reina; tachibana and oda; majima, and yeah he was actually the one that defeatead nishiki and unknowingly caused him to become a vampire, also majima himself turns into a vampire later in the story thanks to a certain mad simp nishitani)
yuko comes back as a vampire
at some point the scene from my fanart happens; something along the lines of kiryu and nishiki being found by the evil vamps and being attacked. then of course nishiki saves kiryu (who's still baffled that this shit is happening to them and vampires are REAL) and tells him to run which he doesn't but it works out fine in the end
the scene of nishiki drinking kiryu's blood is a MUST because i. love. that. shit. (it's also extremely horny dfjvhsdkfhiasdfhisd)
nishiki's personality is somewhere in between his ykz0 and ykz k*wami self (like, he's much colder now but he still cares about others and does things not just for the sake of his own ambition)
idk about the end but immortal boyfriends? sounds nice?
#i'm so sorry anon this took so long#i went to bed and slept for like 12 hours and then my neck and back were really bothering me ghjklkjljfkjg#i had to take a few smoke breaks along the way#writing shit is hard#OKAY I'M DONE WITH EXCUSES SORRYYYYY#nishikiryu#yakuza#vampire!au#ask

pirate king (45) || atz
The stunned silence brought on by the ludicrous request is broken by Commander Kang actually adding on to that preposterous behest. Even in your own stupefied daze, you somehow manage to hear the next words that leave the commander’s mouth.
“I also want my son, Kang Yeosang.”
Every thought flees your mind all at once, leaving only a barren mental landscape behind, a mere deserted wasteland. Time seems to slow down for you, air turning liquid as the words drift over to you gently like a fallen leaf swirling and eddying on the surface of a still lake. A moment of eerie calm is all you get, before the actual meaning of the words, with all the force of a sledgehammer, smash into you harder than a battering ram.
You’re terrified.
Numb, predatory fear prowls into your mind, nestling and rooting itself there before you can finally register its presence. It’s tormenting you, torturing you. Your base instinct screams at you to flee as fast as you can possibly run before this man can get his hands on you, but your legs are frozen to the deck. You can’t even scream if you wanted to, let alone run, and even if you could, where would you run to?
Your mind is pulled and twisted by fear and anxiety in all directions, but as much as you hate to admit it, doubt wells up in you.
Yes, you know that the crew think of you as one of their own. Yes, you think that they truly do care about you and that they would, under some of the harshest circumstances, never sacrifice you for their own interests.
But in response to this deal? The reward is too enticing, as alluring as fresh nectar to a honey bee. How do you even refuse an offer like this? Hell, you’re tempted to take the deal yourself, even if it means sacrificing yourself in the process. One crew member of the ship for the safety and security of the entire crew? When will you ever get another offer like that?
However noble you may want your intentions to be, though, you know that you’re selfish.
Because deep in you, you’re desperately wishing that your captain turns it down.
No matter how selfish that makes you, no matter what your crew has to give up, part of you is terrified of dying. It’s more than a mere survival instinct, more of a deep seated desire rooting in you. You can’t die, not now, not when you’re nowhere near the end of your journey-
At your own trail of thought, something claws at your heart, so painfully you actually feel it in your body. Shocked panic runs through you at the words that have just passed through your mind, because when you try to figure out exactly what they mean, the pain in your head grows more and more, from a mere throbbing to an agonising pounding of your mind.
Journey?
But before you can think your brain into a catatonic state, your captain speaks up, his voice trembling with fury, knuckles white around the handle of his cutlass as if he can’t wait to slice the man before him into a million tiny pieces. Even if it’s not aimed at you, the incensed, red hot rage is all too clear in his words, sending a shiver down your spine as your survival instinct screams at you to bolt.
“What. Do. You. Want. With. Them.”
Every syllable is shaking with vengeful fury, as if he can’t wait to rain hell’s wrath upon the Commander, but Kang Yongsun merely stands his ground calmly, eyeing the captain with a cool, collected gaze.
“I want my son back with me for personal reasons-” He begins, but San finally snaps, lunging forward furiously before Jongho catches him by the arm, yanking him back even though you can see from the battlemaster’s furious expression, he wants nothing more than to bludgeon the man before him to a bloody pulp as well.
“How dare you call him your son that after you were the one who abandoned him in the first place?” San screams, writhing against Jongho’s grip, his usually calm demeanour completely shattered into smithereens. For such a lithe man, your master is surprisingly strong, nearly wriggling out of Jongho’s hold before the young battlemaster catches him once again. “You f*cking destroyed him when you betrayed him like that! You’re a heartless liar!”
You too, can feel anger rising up in you even through your numb shock. From the little you had glimpsed of Yeosang’s memories, the navigator had truly looked up to his father, loved him dearly though he’d gone years without seeing his face, idolised him, even. When he had been given over to the Pirate King as the object of a deal, you had felt everything within him shatter like glass.
Yeosang had truly almost been destroyed beyond repair.
“It is not my problem that Yeosang was foolish and believed that I loved him.” His father states dispassionately, as if he doesn’t care the least about his only son. Horror and disbelief runs through you as you stare at the man. How can any human being be so… inhumane? “I never told him I loved him, so I’ve never lied to him in the least.”
Your heart drops in your chest. This man…
“Let me go, Jongho, let me kill that bastard! He thought you loved him!” San continues howling in rage, thrashing against the younger battlemaster. You’ve never seen your master in such an uncontrolled manner, and he’s not even drunk. “Yeosang almost starved himself to death the first few months he was on the ship because of this shithole, I’m going to kill him-”
“Mingi, bring San to my cabin and help me keep him there for now.” Your captain says coldly, obviously noting that Mingi’s barely restraining himself from swinging that huge axe and chopping Commander Kang right in half, seething with white knuckled fury. The quartermaster, clearly knowing that he’s going to do something reckless if he stays here any longer, merely grabs San around the middle and hoists him into the air, carrying him away from the main deck to the captain’s cabin, San screaming and swearing the whole way.
“And don’t you dare touch my apprentice! I’ll hunt you down to the ends of the earth and destroy you, you asshole-”
The cabin door slams shut, effectively cutting off the sounds of your master’s fury.
Then your captain turns back to the commander, who looks completely unruffled by San’s accusations and screams. For a moment, you’re actually terrified at how stony this man’s face is. His facade is as cold as ice, to the point it almost unnerves you. It’s nothing like the silent calm Yeosang possesses, but he instead has a far more menacing, emotionless demeanour, as if he’s more golem than you are.
You imagine yourself like that, briefly, for a moment. A body of clay, with silent, unblinking, dispassionate eyes. More soulless than any human being around you.
The mere thought of it scares you.
“And what do you want with Chin Hae?” Your captain then adds on with gritted teeth, barely managing to cling on to his own facade of calm. At the sound of your name, your hands start to shake from fear, but then Yunho takes your hand in his, gripping it tight.
You turn slowly to look at him, knowing that you probably look like the day you had first met, terrified of the death that was ever so imminent in that alley back in Raguza, except this time your fate lies not in your hands, but your captain’s.
Yunho meets your eyes with a nervous, uneasy gaze, but when he speaks, his voice is full of surety.
“Hongjoong-hyung would never give you or Yeosang up, no matter the price.”
And you believe him. Your captain had already endured so much for you and the crew, if not him, who else could you possibly trust with your life? His actions spoke louder than words, with his body he had already shown you his dedication to his crew back in Nassau. With the determination he had plunged straight into the sea witch’s den, you knew he was willing to give up so much for you.
Yes. Your captain would not accept this deal. You believe that, at the very least.
“I cannot answer.” Commander Kang answers calmly, but from his words alone you can tell he’s not lying in the least. “My superior officer has ordered for it, so I obey his orders without question.”
“Like a obedient dog cowed into mindless submission.” Jongho snarls mockingly, grounding the end of his mace against the deck. But Kang Yongsun doesn’t react to the sneer at all, instead nodding in agreement with the statement.
“I do my job as required of me.” He replies, his voice completely devoid of emotion, before turning back to look at your seething captain, his one eye now a bright, venomous green. “But even if you do not give the woman Chin Hae up to the Royal Navy in a deal, we will still be forced to hunt her down anyway. She has a bounty on her head as well.”
At that, Hongjoong actually flinches in shock. You yourself are confused, why would you of all people be targeted specifically by the Royal Navy? In comparison to all the other members of the crew, you’ve not committed as many crimes as they have, so why you?
“How much is it? The bounty.” Your captain demands tonelessly, and Commander Kang opens his mouth to answer.
And with his next words, you feel your mind melt into a puddle of incomprehension.
“One thousand gold pieces.”
You nearly spit blood in shock, and from the way Yunho’s body goes entire rigid, he’s just as stunned as you. One thousand gold pieces, you imagine blearily, as if you can’t think straight anymore. You must be going crazy.
It can’t be possible. You’d heard from Yunho that the bounty on the captain himself is five hundred gold pieces, wanted alive by the Crown. How can your bounty be twice the price of your captain’s?
That’s it. You’re either dreaming, drunk, going deaf or crazy, because you can’t be hearing any of this. None of it makes sense.
Commander Kang continues calmly, as if he hasn’t just dropped the biggest bombshell of the century on every person on board this ship simultaneously. “And our orders are to take her back alive, so you needn’t worry about her being killed in our hands-”
Hongjoong lunges with his cutlass faster than your eye can see.
There’s a clang of steel against steel as Commander Kang raises his blade just in the nick of time to save himself from being split from head to toe by the edge of your captain’s sword. Even for a man well past his prime, the Commander must obviously still be fighting fit, because his arms only tremble slightly when he holds his sword steady against your captain’s overhead slash.
They stand there for a moment, locked in some sort of stalemate, before the two of them pull apart, swords levelled at each other.
You realise that this is the first time you’ve seen your captain in action. Not the playful mock duels that he, Yunho and Jongho have on deck with the crew cheering them from the sides, betting on who would win, but an actual fight in which your captain’s eye is completely cold and calculating, reading his opponent’s every move, predicting every strike. Adrenaline floods your veins from the sheer tension in the air, but you’re frozen with numb shock.
Nobody moves as the two captains exchanged dark looks, charged to the brim with unspoken meaning.
“I should kill you where you stand.” Hongjoong hisses, lips bared in a snarl. But Commander Kang simply smiles through gritted teeth, keeping his blade at the ready for another surprise strike from your captain.
“But I’m the only one who knows why the Royal Navy wants the woman.”
You don’t think you’ve ever seen your captain so incensed.
“Her name. Is. Chin. Hae.”
Whirling around, Hongjoong lunges forward with a flick of his wrist, the cutlass darting out like a snake’s tongue, ready to cut at least some part of his opponent’s sword arm off, but then the hooded man from the side slides between your captain and the commander in the blink of an eye, the longsword in his hands stopping the cutlass dead in its tracks.
The hood falls from the man’s head, revealing soft brown curls, soft, sweet features and a gentle nose, deep brown eyes that seem all too familiar to you even though you’ve never seen the man before in your life.
Why are they so familiar?
Because you’ve seen them on someone else before.
There are three rings braided in his hair, brushing his temple lightly.
Next to you, Yunho freezes, eyes going wide as if he’s seen a ghost. The spear actually goes clattering from his trembling hands to the deck, the sound unnaturally loud in your ears, his face turning white as a sheet as he manages to utter just a single word in disbelief, barely above a whisper.
“Gunho?”
On a ship somewhere in the middle of an ocean, a man sits silently in the cabin with his eyes closed.
He’s so still he might just be a statue, completely motionless. If it weren’t for the slight rise and fall of his chest, he could have been mistaken for a dead body. A minute passes, then two, the water clock in the corner making soft noises as it keeps track of the time.
Drip. Drip. Drip.
Suddenly, the man’s eyes slide open, a sinister smile curling on his lips as he breathes in deeply, resting his chin on his fingers, the picture of calm and composure. However, his eyes dance with a terrifying, maniacal light, his deep blue eyes glowing ever so slightly in the dim room with some sort of unearthly gleam.
“The prophecy is finally coming to pass.” He sighs in pleasure, the dangerous purr of his voice like silk dragged across skin. “I knew you would do me proud... my son.”
There’s a knock on the door and he rises to his feet, stepping across the room. Soon, he will be free of all of this, he deserves more, so much more, he’s going to be the one with dominion over the-
“Captain! We’ve caught its trail!”
Twisted, depraved glee rises in him as his fingers dance on the hilt of the silver knife at his side excitedly. He pushes the door of the cabin opening, the sun’s rays crushed under his feet as he steps forward to the main deck, watching the sea of blue all about him.
He drags his tongue against the blade, a deranged grin on his lips as he seeks out his next prey. The sirens are easy targets, but they don’t yield nearly enough.
“Let’s go kill the hafgufa.”

Duo x male reader
a/n: oh gods this is so. anyways this was meant for day thirteen of the @gundam-wing-pride event but certain circumstances have caused me to be unable to post in time for it. the tears prompt was kept in mind for this, i hope it suffices.
word count: 2,059
summary: horrific battles never made you cry, so how did a joke from Duo manage to do it?
warnings: reader is in an active war at first, brief mentions of reader becoming deaf to loud sounds after the battle, reader has a very dry way of thinking, i haven't seen the entirety of the show in ages so i think my timeline is a little messed up
reader pronouns: he/him but comes off as gn
How’d you end up here?
You’d woken up to the extremely jarring sounds of the space station’s evacuation alarms. Considering the immediate panicking masses of people that then flooded the streets, it wasn’t the best way to wake up. Especially when you factor in that your first evacuation drill since the ‘safe space’ had been rebuilt, relocated and refortified was supposed to happen next week. Though to be fair, there were absolutely no signs that you knew of that would signal a a war erupting on your colony.
Honestly? You never were impressed by the Gundams. All you knew about them was that they were starting a war with what a few of the colonies had begun to call the “colony rebels.” The White Fang. Maybe the White Fang had started the war, but you could care less. No matter who’d started this, the colonies- your colony- was caught in the crossfires now.
And it wasn’t like you could trust the Gundams, either. It wasn’t that long ago that Gundam Pilot 04 almost blew up an entire colony because their father had been killed. If that was how the Gundams handled personal loss, your colony could only speculate on the ways they’d deal with the political difficulties of a war. And unsurprisingly, it turned out that they handled it absolutely terribly.
The scariest part was the absolute absurdness of the whole war. Two sides that claimed to speak for the colonies. The White Fang pressed attention on the colonies, while the Gundams remained an absolute mystery. Plus, the individual power struggles claiming the colonies, the Treize Faction war against Oz that was reportedly occuring back on Earth... everybody was misinformed about absolutely all of it, and the best you could do was try to make sense of the chaos unfolding and hope it never touched your poor colony.
But wishes don’t always come true. And certainly never the wishes you make.
Like the wish you’d been repeating back to yourself for the last hour- to be able to come out of this unscathed. Your arm had some thoughts on that.
As it turns out, trying to run through an active warzone to the safe space you didn’t know the location of was extremely dangerous. So dangerous that your arm had been hit with a stray bullet. Right now the main dangers were the footsoldiers firing at each other, but not that far off in the distance you could see two of the Gundams fighting a swarm of Taruses. The fact that they weren’t close was anything but comforting, since you’d seen the speed of the Gundams before on T.V.
Oh.
“Hey- get outta the way! Ya try’na get killed?” A White Fang footsoldier shoved you to the side, presumably trying to help. Instead you stumbled facedown into a very large pile of scrap metal. Which very much hurt your arm and effectively trapped your leg as well.
Fun. “The fuck kinda horror movie is this?” You muttered to yourself. Of course, of course you ran directly into the fray. Because of COURSE that was safer than the opposite direction (which in all fairness had been covered in sharp-looking rubble). That’s fine. You could work with this. What did your uncle usually tell you- take inventory in terms of crises?
You hadn’t brought a backpack with you, so, all you could take inventory on was what was in your pockets. One elastic, a single outdated coin, and fuzz. Plus, a bleeding arm and the bullet you figured was still in there, a possibly twisted and hopefully not broken foot, ringing in your ears... and the clothes on your back. Ok.
So this is how you die? Fine. That’s fucking fine. You had plenty to live for, but fine. Who cares?
“Woah-hoh, what the hell? Hey- hey handsome, you awake?”
A very neon green light pierced your consciousness. Out of habit, you tried to raise your arm to block it out- and then an even more painful, piercing feeling jolted through your whole body. “Ahh-huah- ‘m. ‘m awake now. Ohhh gods. Yeah. ‘m- yeah. Fuck. Who’re you and are you going to help me or kill me?”
“Kill you? Man, I might be the god of Death and all but I’m not going to kill you! You related to Heero or somethin’?”
“Don’t know- ow- who the fuck that is. What’s up with that green light shit> ‘M gonna be blinded if I open my eyes.”
And there the light went. Nice. If this guy didn’t kill you, you might actually survive. Sans your arm. Nobody on your colony could help your arm. You figured that life would be interesting from now on. “Great, thanks man. Fuuuuck. You- you see my arm? Yeah- I’m taking your silence as a yeah. This bitch’s fucked and moving at all is very very painful. So hey random stranger. You strong enough to carry me to the nearest amputator?”
Apparently you were just being dramatic. Your arm would 100% be still attached and your foot would survive. Your ears were… fine. After waking up in a hospital on an entirely different colony station, you learned that apparently, there exists a kind of deaf in which it was hard to hear things that were too loud. Which. You now had.
No more concerts. Meh.
The most jarring of everything was when you discovered that a) you were likely to have either trauma or ptsd and b) the guy that carried you to the hospital in his Gundam- was a Gundam Pilot. 02. Duo Maxwell. He’d brought you to Colony 14 Blue and was now reportedly “chillin’ outside until you get discharged.” with the promise that he’d bring you to the Peacemillion afterwards.
Oh. And almost everybody you knew closely had “likely” passed away in the attack. The therapy for that was going to be interesting when you consider that nobody of your family was on the colony at the time of the attack. Honestly the way they were pressing for you to be evaled made it feel like they were planning to make an example out of your supposedly poor mental state. Unsurprisingly the hospital was being run by the White Fang.
Discharge went quickly. The ride back to Duo’s Deathscythe went quickly. The ride in Duo’s Deathscythe went far, far too slowly. And adjusting to life on the Peacemillion went poorly.
Every now and again, Duo would look for you and, if he hadn’t immediately come from a fight (he passed out on your carpet once due to blood loss after being in a gunfight. Zechs was less than appreciative.), he’d bring you to the nearest colony. Being able to enjoy a day out on occasion was a rarity you usually only got to experience with Duo.
“Ooooi, Duo. Check these out. Tell me these aren’t the coolest gloves you’ve ever seen.” You held up some black fingerless gloves for him to inspect. He’d brought you to a new colony, where apparently a special holiday (complete with fun sales) was happening. Admittedly, some of the people on this station were giving you and Duo some especially strange looks whenever Duo would tug on your shirt or grab your hand to get your attention but like. Fuck them.
“Hey, those look pretty awesome!” he grinned and bounced over, snatching the gloves from your hands to look for a price tag. “To steal or not to steal, that is the question.”
You raised an eyebrow. So maybe the crush you’d developed on this overgrown child of a thief was growing. So what? It’s just a crush. Everything’s going to be fine. “Is the price tag expensive or something?”
Duo shook his head. “Exact opposite. There isn’t one.”
“Let’s just leave ten gilla and bolt, then.”
“...wicked.”
Normally the rides back home were silent and awkward, but after the rather exciting day you’d had, you were feeling especially chatty. Which wasn’t to say that there weren’t still awkward breaks in the conversation. It was quiet, sure, but a lot of things had been quiet lately. Being deaf to louder things tended to do that to a person.
Duo drew you out of your thoughts with another tug on your sleeve and pressed one of the gloves into your hand. “Here. Figured we’d both look badass with just one glove. Plus we match!” He held up his gloved left hand with an air of confidence. He wasn’t wrong, honestly. Wearing his braid the way he did, he already cut an impressive figure, but the gloves really sold the look.
You pulled on the glove he gave you, flexing your fingers to test it’s flexibility. After all, if you couldn’t engage in you and Duo’s elaborate handshake, you might have to ditch the glove altogether. Luckily the glove fit you well- functionality and style alike. Ten gilla spent well.
“Not bad. Y’think Zechs’ll get jealous?” Duo laughed at the idea.
“Doubtful, doesn’t he have Noin to get him cool stuff? Plus, I think his mask and that hair are defining accessories, what else does he need?”
You shrugged. “What gay wouldn’t love these? ‘M already enjoying mine ‘nd yours look more worn in than mine do. Solid fuckin’ proof right there.” Not like you could confirm or deny that Duo was gay. Honestly, you didn’t really care for his specific labels, but Zechs was definitely gay so it just helped further the joke. With his demeanor and his lesbian best friend? Could the flags get any gayer.
“More like pansexual on my account. Good to know your take on gender preference though. This mean I’m allowed to openly flirt with you now?” He leaned back into his seat, throwing his feet up onto the table in front of you and resting his head in his hands.
You raised an eyebrow. “Only if you promise not to ‘no homo’ me afterwards.” Duo pretended to fall backwards, clutching at the nonexistent pearls and acting offended. You two giggled when Sally came in from the cockpit to assure herself that somebody hadn’t just gotten a concussion. To which Duo immediately pretended to have a head wound of some sorts (you suspected he was being purposely vague) in hopes of attaining the candy that Sally sometimes had on hand.
Once she left (leaving you and Duo with strong warnings against fooling around more, lest Duo’s “head injury” get worse; to which you had saluted and replied, “absolutely no promises, ma’am!”) you shared a look with the brunette and tried to keep from dissolving into a fit of laughter. To your chagrin, it was a fail. You were laughing so hard that your stomach was starting to genuinely hurt. Duo was doubled over on the ground, wheezing unintelligible words and trying to hand you the lollipop that Sally gave him.
By the time you had managed to calm down and breathe, Duo was getting into the chair beside you and clutching his side. “I think I pulled a muscle from laughing so hard.”
“Yeesh, ‘m crying from laughin’ so much. Aah, this is what y’do to me.” You joked, wiping away tears from the corners of your eyes.
“Y’know, I don’t think I’ve ever seen you cry before,” Duo paused to think. “like, at all! Now that I think about it, didja even cry when I rescued you?” You shrugged again. The battlefield was pretty terrifying and if you hadn’t found it in you to cry from fear… well, you were feeling a lot of emotions during the whole ordeal. Who could really blame you? “Pretty tough that a fuckin battle didn’t even make you cry. Hey- my bit musta been pretty damn good to make you shed a tear!”
“Yeah, don’t let it get to y’head. ‘S just because ‘m crushin on you.” You mentioned casually, testing the waters.
“Full homo?”
“Full homo.”
Well, would you look at that. Now Duo was crying. What was with you two and tears today?
BONUS:
“You’re so cheesy.” You muttered to Duo, who was proudly holding up your guys’s fingerless gloves- which he had sewn a rainbow patch onto the back of.
He smiled, tugging your glove onto your hand. “Mhm. You love it though.”
Sighing, you returned the favour and pulled his glove onto his right hand. “You’re right. I love it. I love you.”

Something You Can’t Deny
A/N - wow this has taken me ages to write and it’s a lot longer than I intitally planned it to be! Sorry 😬 I always get carried away with oneshots and this Mingi one just got me! I’m a little (or very) whipped for him 😂 but I hope you enjoy!
When someone asks what Mingi is to you the first word that comes to mind in enemie. He’s your rival, the reason for your anger, the person that drives you completely insane. Most people don’t understand the pure hatred you have towards each other. Your fued seemingly coming out of nowhere. At first even you were confused as to why Mingi didn’t like you, but then, after numerous attempts at trying to be friendly, you gave up and decided to hate him back. You can live with the fact that not everyone is going to like you.
“Do we really have to watch a scary movie? I won’t be able to sleep tonight.” You plea as Yunho selects the horror genre on Netflix, shooting your best puppy eyes around the room in an attempt to get any form of sympathy.
“Quit being such a baby and get over it.” Mingi snarls, causally throwing a piece of popcorn in the air in an attempt to catch it in his mouth. He looks so unphased by the premis of a horror but everyone in the room knows as much as he does that deep down he isn’t keen on the idea either.
When the popcorn bounces off his nose and ends up on the floor you smirk, feeling satisfied that he hadn’t managed to look suave and cool. It’s instant karma for his uncalled for remark.
“You’ll be ok, I’m right here to protect you.” San scoots closer to your side, protectively wrapping his arm around your shoulder and pulling you into his chest. You let out a quiet chuckle as you accept his hug, your arms making their way around his body so you can snuggle comfortably into his side.
“I think she has a better chance of getting through this movie if I protect her. With you, (Y/N) risks getting jolted around at every jump scare.” Jongho teases, laughing heartily as San whines and turns to complain to Seonghwa like siblings with their parents.
“Stop making a fuss, I wanna actually watch this.” Mingi snaps, throwing a pillow at San as the movie begins playing. He seems grumpy, a deep frown on his face as he glares in your direction, glancing between you and San momentarily before launching the pillow.
It ends up hitting you in the face, your cheeks turning bright red in embarrassment as Mingi snorts with laughter. He looks pleased with himself as you sit up, moving yourself away from San’s side. It’s like that’s what he had intended to happen.
“Oops.” He states with a mocking twinge in his tone, earning an elbow and glare from Yeosang next to him in return.
~
“I’ve left the pillow and blanket on the sofa for you, and there’s a charger for you to use on the coffee table, ok?” Seonghwa informs you as you enter the kitchen after getting your pyjamas on; an old T-shirt that you stole from Yunho and some pink spotty shorts. It’s your go to lazy outfit when you have a PJ day at home.
“Thank you Hwa.” You cuddle into his side, nuzzling your head into him affectionaly as he envelops you in his arms, laughing at your actions.
“It’s alright. See you in the morning.” He pats your head and you feign annoyance, forever adamant that you don’t like it when he does that. But deep down you both know you do.
“Goodnight.” You respond, turning around to grab a glass of water to take with you to bed.
You don’t want to acknowledge Mingi as he enters the room and let’s out a grumble upon seeing you, but you’re tired and can’t be bothered to put up with him right now. Your temper worn thin over the course of the day.
“What was that for?” You defensively question, a scour replacing the contented smile that was previously on your face.
“None of your business princess.” Mingi condescendingly mocks.
“Then why’d you have to snarl at me.” You’re trying everything in your power not to seeth at him, but it’s too difficult when Mingi makes your blood boil just from the arrogant look on his face.
“Because I’m always so happy to see you, can’t you tell?” His sarcastic laugh is enough to send you over the edge of anger, it makes your whole body feel like it’s going to explode.
It annoys you to no end how he treats you, particularly because he has no reason to be so rude all the time. He just goes out of his way to treat you like trash. To mock and belittle you. It’s infuriating.
“You know what, I’m done putting up with you! I can handle the fact that not everyone is going to like me, but when you act this way for no reason, it’s horrible.” Your explosion of anger takes Mingi by surprise, his whole expression shocked as he watches you with wide eyes. He had never thought you would become this angry in front of him, let along blow up in his face like this. But you have and he doesn’t know how to react.
“Don’t even try to excuse yourself.” You quickly cut in as you notice Mingi open his mouth, about to speak.
“Just leave me alone from now on.” You’re seething, bluntly putting him in his place before deciding you don’t even want to stay for the night anymore. You’ve had enough.
“Woah, what’s going on? Is everything alright?” You almost crash into Hongjoong on your way out of the kitchen. You look as though you could simultaneously punch a wall and burst into tears.
“I’m going home, I can’t stand Him.” You shudder bitterly, throwing your shoes on and brabbing your bag.
Hongjoong just stands frozen, confused and upset by your anger. He watches as you leave, odd socks stuffed into your shoes and oversized pyjamas, the door slamming shut behind you.
“I heard a bang! Is everyone alive?” San comes running into the hallway, followed my Wooyoung and Jongho.
“(Y/N) left, the bang was the front door. She was pretty pissed off.” Hongjoong informs the guys as they nod in understanding.
“Why was she pissed off?” Jongho questions, voicing the question that even Hongjoong wanted to know a proper answer to.
“I think I have a good idea...” San narrows his eyes in suspicion before heading off.
~
You wake up the next morning to your phone going off with numerous messages and missed calls. But it’s what you get for storming off without informing anyone as to why. They’re probably worried sick and desperate to get through to you.
With that thought in mind you reach out to grab your phone off the bedside table before unlocking it and swiping through all the notifications. Each of them have sent though multiple texts, along with a few missed calls from Seonghwa and Hongjoong. But there’s one that catches your eye. It makes your breath hitch as you read the message.
It’s apparent it’s from Mingi, although it’s displayed as from an unknown number; you’d never bothered keep him as a contact because why would you ever want to message him anyway? But you must admit his message is kind of sweet: I didn’t think I upset you that much... I hope you’re ok.
You’re not sure why but it seems to fill you with some sort of weird feeling, finding yourself staring at the message in a daze.
Maybe it’s not real and you’re just imagining, hoping, that Mingi actually cares about you... maybe one of the guys stole his phone and sent the message for him.
Or maybe he really does care.
It’s a strange thought but one that you can’t seem to shake off. Your mind still thinking about the message as you hit call on Seonghwa’s number and wait for him to answer.
“Finally, it’s about time you answered one of us.” He scolds as soon as he picks up, tone unimpressed and you can just imagine the disappointed look he would be giving you if he were here right now.
“I’m sorry, I’ve only just woken up.” You mumble, voice hoarse and throat dry.
“You sound awful, how’re you feeling?” Seonghwa’s voice instantly softens when he hears you speak. Come to think of it you feel very sluggish, a headache brewing and eyes aching, still feeling sensitive from all your crying last night. There’s no doubt Seonghwa can sense this through the phone.
“I feel crap.” You dryly chuckle, trying to make light of the situation at least a little, but your laugh comes out half-assed, like you are forcing yourself to seem more fine than you really are.
You continue your conversation with Seonghwa, answering all his questions about what happened last night, both of you unaware of the prying ears that listen in carefully.
Hearing your voice alone makes Mingi’s heart clench in pain. He hates that he is the reason behind it, although he would never admit that to you.
Your relationship with Mingi is complicated, one that he would struggle to explain if asked to. You see, Mingi’s mean and spiteful attitude towards you isn’t because he actually hates you, it’s more because he gets a kick out of your reactions. He loves the attention you give him when you are mad, and even more so when you are sassy. It drives him crazy, making his head spin with how much his heart races anytime you argue. So much so it’s not healthy. But it’s the only way you actually give him attention and so he has found himself looking forward to teasing you purely for that reason.
He never realised he had taken it too far the previous night; with all the snarky comments throughout the movie and then his general attitude afterwards, it sent you over the edge.
Mingi holds his breath, hiding himself from view as soon as he hears Seonghwa begin to hang up, telling you to be over as soon as possible.
But there’s one prevailing thought in his mind as he begins thinking about what to do next. He can’t miss his chance.
~
“Do you mind if we go somewhere more private, I just don’t want to face anyone.” You mumble as you are pulled by Seonghwa towards the living room.
He stops mid way, turning to give you a glance and when his eyes meet yours he reads the anxiousness and sadness that they hold.
“Sure.” Seonghwa meekly smiles. He had hoped to get you and Mingi to cross paths so you could finally resolve your differences, but now that doesn’t seem likely.
“What do you want to do?” Seonghwa casually questions as you fall onto his bed and cuddle up into the duvet.
“I want to stay like this for the rest of eternity.” Your voice comes out muffled by the sheets which makes Seonghwa laugh, a fond smile on his face as he stands at the foot of his bed.
“Unfortunately that’s not an option.” He chuckles, watching as you complain and turn yourself to lay on your back, eyes gazing up at the ceiling as if it’s the most interesting thing you have ever seen. “I really think we should get your mind onto something else... what about we cook something?” Seonghwa suggests.
“No...” you whine, moving your focus onto your friend as he huffs. “All I want to do is hibernate in here with you and some movies... and lots of snacks.” You state, sitting up so you can gage what Seonghwa’s reaction will be.
“You know what, let’s do it. But you need to go buy the snacks.” He smirks, pleased with himself that he has found a loophole in your plan to stay hidden away.
You roll your eyes, feigning annoyance, though your smile gives away how you truly feel.
“Fine, I’m going now.” You push yourself off the bed, trudging lazily out of the room to grab some money before leaving to complete your task.
~
“What do I choose?” You mumble out loud to yourself, so deep in thought that you haven’t realised other people can actually hear you.
“I would go for the cheese flavour, it’s the best.” Your head snaps to the left, the voice having made you jump. You didn’t even realise anyone was in the same isle as you, let alone standing by your side.
But your heart begins to race when you realise who the voice belongs to, your mouth falling open so you end up gawking at Mingi beside you.
“I don’t need your help.” You flatly respond as soon as you regain your composure. Mingi watches you in amusement, taking great pleasure from catching you off guard.
When he saw you enter the shop he thought he must be hallucinating. His guilty mind playing tricks on him as he becomes increasingly desperate to see you, to have a chance to apologise. Then he realised that this was his chance to approach you, clear the air of tension between you, or at least that’s what he was hoping for.
“Alright, I was just trying to be nice.” He holds his hands up in defence, though his smirk only makes you increasingly more annoyed.
“You, being nice pft.” You scoff, rolling your eyes as you begin moving away from Mingi.
“It is possible you know... here, let me get them for you.” He reaches out to grab the bag of chips, gaining your attention once again.
“Oh no, that’s not gonna happen.” You shake your head, folding your arms defensively. You can’t allow this to happen purely because you know this is Mingi’s way of clearing his conscience. He doesn’t really care about you.
“Too late!” Mingi suddenly makes a run for it, dashing over to the register to pay, a cute little squeal emitting from him in excitement. You catch yourself genuinely laughing at Mingi, finding his behaviour highly amusing and quite endearing.
“Here, all yours.” You wipe the smile off your face before Mingi can notice as he approches you holding out the bag of chips for you to take.
“I told you I don’t want them.” You shift your gaze away from him to look unforgiving. Truth is you don’t want to see the disappointment on his face.
Mingi lowers his arm back to his side, bag of chips still clutched in his hand as he stares at you, saddened by your coldness. He’s aware that he deserves it but he was really hoping you would find some part of you to forgive him.
“Please accept my peace offering (Y/N), I really am trying to ammend things between us.” Mingi’s voice comes out delicate, his sincerity making you feel guilty.
You glance up at him, sighing in defeat as you see his eyes becoming glazed over with tears; you’d be heartless to not forgive him.
“Fine.” You coyly smile, reaching out to accept Mingi’s gift. “But you’re joining the movie marathon I’m having with Seonghwa tonight... as a thank you.” You continue, finally letting your guard slip away, a small smile tugging at the corner of your lips when Mingi’s face lights up.
~
“Finally! what took you so long? Oh, I see...” Seonghwa begins to playfully scold you, only stopping when he sees Mingi appear behind you, a knowing grin teasing his lips.
“Mingi bought us some snacks so I invited him along.” You attempt to keep a straight face, wanting to play down the fact that you are trying to start again. It’s no big deal right? Just one of those casual suddenly becoming friends with the enemie scenarios.
“Alright.” Seonghwa’s mind is filled with a dozen questions as to how you managed to get to this point in such a short amount of time, but he doesn’t voice them. There’ll be time soon enough.
“What movies have you picked?” Mingi causally questions, picking up the remote to scroll through the playlist on Netflix that has been lined up.
~
You aren’t sure what time it is when you suddenly jolt awake. It takes you a minute to gather your surroundings, the room blanketed in darkness and tv no longer on.
Seonghwa must have switched it off after you’d fallen asleep, it’s happened many times during your past movie marathons together. It’s like a sequence of events that happen every time, you both begin watching a movie and then around halfway through the film you doze off, leaving Seonghwa to finish watching it alone.
This time, however, is a little different from normal. For starters you are cuddled into someone, head resting on their chest as it calmly rises and falls. Their arms are wrapped around your waist, keeping you close and secure. But what has caught you off guard the most is that as you slowly lift you head away, you realise that it’s Mingi who you have fallen asleep on.
Never in a million years would you have thought this could happen. And yet you aren’t repulsed.
You catch yourself staring at him. He looks so peaceful, ethereal, as he sleeps and you have to stop yourself from admiring him too much. He could never like you. Even up until today he has always gone out of his way to be rude and make fun. You’re stupid to even think you have the slightest chance.
Feeling your heart sink you decide to distract yourself and look around the room in search for Seonghwa, to see if he is awake or not. It quickly dawns on you that he is nowhere to be found.
“What time is it?” You feel your heart rate quicken upon hearing Mingi’s groggy voice, shuffling away a little erratically to create some distance between you as panic overtakes your body. How long has he been awake? Does he know you’ve been staring?
“What’s wrong?” He tilts his head in confusion, pout resting on his lips as his arms reach out to draw you back in a little, though not too much. Mingi can see the panic written on your face and he doesn’t want to scare you off, but at the same time he wants to wrap you in cotton wool and keep you safe forever.
“I... need to go.” It takes you a minute to respond, suddenly jumping out of Mingi’s reach and rushing out of the room.
“(Y/N)! Wait up.” Mingi rushes after you, stopping when he finds you stood in the middle of the living room, face buried in your hands. “Why are you acting so strange.” He softly questions, his arm gently placed on your shoulder to try and provide some comfort.
“Me, strange! No no no, I’m not strange. What’s strange is this! Us, cuddling together and acting like we haven’t hated each other for years.” You blurt, your mind running wild in a frenzy as you can’t seem to calm down.
Mingi stays silent, watching you as he is deep in thought. He can’t help but find your reaction to falling asleep cuddled up together really cute. And truth be told he’s glad that it happened, being close to you has always been something he’s wanted. He’s seen it between you and the others, making him act out in jealousy. He’s always taken it out on you and that’s what’s pushed you away all this time. But watching you freak out now makes him think that maybe it could be because you have the same feelings for him that he has for you.
You fall silent when you realise Mingi is just staring, finally meeting his gaze as he looks at you. He looks deep in thought, a flicker of contemplation sweeping across his face when you notice his eyes glance at your lips before retracting back to your eyes, then back to your lips again.
You aren’t sure what to do, time seemingly slowing down as you watch Mingi move closer in slow motion. You feel a hand on your waist, the other caressing you’re cheek as it tilts your face up, his eyes staying firmly trained on your lips.
He stops when you are millimetres apart, your lips agape as you become breathless. It’s a dizzying sensation, being this close to Mingi. You’re frozen. You don’t want to resist in case he backs away, but you also don’t want to be the first to make a move in case that’s not what he’s intending.
His eyes glance up from your lips, meeting your gaze and staring deeply into your eyes in search of any reluctance. And when he finds none his head dips, lips connecting to yours tenderly.
You respond instantly, eyes fluttering shut as your hands move to grip onto his arms tightly. Your legs feel like jelly, whole body becoming distant as you indulge in this moment. It’s filled with affection and care, a tenderness that you never thought you would see from Mingi, yet here you are. Just you and him, alone in this moment.
You break away gently, heavy breaths mixing and foreheads resting together. Your eyes meet Mingi’s as he watches you nervously, a smile of relief overtaking his face when he hears you giggle.
“What was that for?” You whisper, acting coy as you feel a deep blush rise up your face.
“It felt right.” You feel Mingi’s thumb rub over your cheek as he watches you fondly.
“Alright love birds, can you be quiet now? Some of us are trying to sleep.” Your attention is diverted onto Yeosang as he stands in the door way along with Seonghwa. You can tell they aren’t really that mad for keeping them awake, but you do still feel a little guilty.
“Hey, let us have our moment! Do you know how long I’ve waited for this?” Mingi complains, mock annoyance in his tone as he tries and fails to hide his smile.
“Believe me when I say we do.” Seonghwa chuckles teasingly. You roll your eyes playfully before turning back to Mingi and reaching out to take his hand. Your fingers interlace with his, making his attention fall back to you.
“Come on, we should get back to bed.” You raise your brow, smirk playing on your lips as you pull Mingi back to bed. Mingi complies with a wide grin, shaking his head as he laughs at your teasing behaviour.
Although you had spent so long hating each other, you’re glad that things have finally changed. I guess there’s just something between you that is bigger than all of that. Something you can’t deny.

hearing // katsuki bakugo
[in which you were under the effect of a quirk that made your hearing hyper-sensitive]
Finishing the last lap of your morning jog, you smiled, panting. You saw the huge gate standing tall, sheltering the UA building. Just before you wanted to enter you saw a child, assuming she was 5 years old was your best guess. She was alone, which was unusual for a kid that young to be wandering off without a guardian, and in front of a high school building.
You approached her. “Um hey there, are you lost?” You asked the little kid with a gentle tone. “Y-yeah,” she whispered unsurely while eyes close to tears, you’re a stranger after all. “Well, want to search for your mom and dad together?” Your hero duty instinct was kicking in, you feel a need to help the child. You held out a hand.
She hesitantly reached your hand. The second she touched you, your heart winced loudly making you thrown aback.
It happened again, again, and again, like some kind of rhythm. With the familiar beat blasted over and over again, you slowly came into a realization that you’re hearing your own heart thumping. Not only that, you heard footsteps but didn’t really see anyone coming. You looked at the ground –where the sound was coming- roughly 2 meters from you, you nearly fainted, after acknowledging that you were hearing an army of ants walking. Another sound, was the grass always making that noise tickling sound? Another sound came, after another, another, then another.
It all became very overwhelming very swiftly, being able to hear everything at once. It was as if they’re fighting against each other, your mind had a trouble focusing on which one to process on.
Birds, chatters, rustles of leaves, your blood rushing through your veins.
Panicked, you covered your ears wanting to reduce the whirl of sounds threatening your eardrums. Yet it didn’t help, the waves of volume kept on coming, clashing, changing every microsecond. You fell to the ground feeling your consciousness fading. A moment before your vision turned black, in haziness you saw that the child wasn’t anywhere to be seen.
-
You jolted up; eyes shot open. “Hey, easy.” The familiar voice you’re used to hearing from a quite distance now felt so close to your eardrums. Noticing the uneasiness on your feature, Aizawa lowered his voice, “You’re currently under effect of someone’s quirk, it makes your hearing hyper-sensitive,” he explained expressionless as always. You groaned quietly, knowing how troublesome your day is going to be ahead.
“Recovery Girl had treated you, but she was just able to reduce the effect to a minimum, she couldn’t actually wipe the quirk off you,” the black-haired male continued. You shot him a horror look, “This is reduced?” You immediately flinched at how loud you could hear your voice.
The ticking of the wall clock somewhere was unbelievably noisy. You started to comprehend and processed more voices in that room. But it wasn’t as horrible as it was before, thanks to Recovery Girl and the usual atmosphere of the nursery room, it was kind of quiet.
“This wasn’t anything life-threatening, but still for precautions, do you have any idea who put the quirk on you?” Aizawa asked, requiring some information so no students would fall into the same circumstances such as yours. “I think.. it was a child, I had just finished my morning run, and I stumbled across her at the front of the gate, and the moment she touched me it was like I was suddenly under a spell,” you explained with a small voice.
“A child?” He raised an eyebrow slightly, somehow amused if thought twice. You grunted, “Ugh I know, lame and incautious. Will you vouch for me if I explained it to my friends that I just got bitten by a radioactive spider instead?” A hopeful feature colored your face. The pro hero didn’t budge at your expression having used to your idiotic antics, letting out a flat, “No, it’s your own fault for being careless.”
You booed at his expected response, but immediately shut up at his glare. “We still don’t know how long the effect is going to be, but are you feeling well enough to go to class? Your classmates had been waiting for news about your condition,” he said, giving you a choice.
As much as you wanted to just wrap yourself with a blanket in somewhere peaceful, which you wouldn’t be getting in class 1A- you knew that if you didn’t even go to one day lecture you’d be far behind on all the subjects. That’s UA for you.
“Yeah, I think so.”
“Okay then, clean yourself up, then meet me at the class corridor.”
-
“Holy hell those guys are loud,” You brought up a hand to your head that was throbbing, you had a problem processing everyone’s voices. Their words were mushed together, it was like thunders on your poor eardrums. And you haven’t even reached the class yet. I think this is the part where you regret all your life choices.
“Now you know how everybody besides you little brats feel,” The pro hero stated flatly.
Aizawa turned the doorknob over, opening the door. Suddenly the whole class was quiet, their attention dead on the teacher they’ve been waiting for. When you also went in exposing yourself to your classmates, a barge of questions came right at you. Your poor, poor eardrums are in need of a new pair.
Will this be how you die, by your own friends’ hands?
The class turned still after seeing the red threatening gaze from Aizawa. “Good grief, right off the bat the first thing you all should know is that (y/n) was under someone’s quirk effect, it makes her very sensitive to sound. So. Be. Quiet.” He finished, keeping a steady eye contact to Bakugo. “What the hell are you staring at me for?!” He raised his voice, you winced at the volume, and at his stupidity. “There, that’s why,” Aizawa said with a glare.
Iida, being the responsible guy that he is, raised a hand. “Yes?” Aizawa nodded, gesturing for him to proceed with his question.
“Sensei!” He started, you hissed at him faintly, “Too loud,” You made a motion for him to lower his voice. “Ah sorry. Sensei, do we know the said person who did it?” He said now with a normal voice. You cursed to yourself, regretting that you’re about to be verdicted lame this early. You looked at your teacher, who now had a grin plastered to his face. “(y/n) has said it herself that it was because of a child touched her, I assumed that the young girl had no idea how to control her quirk yet.”
While everyone was hearing intently, you heard your boyfriend Bakugo muttered under his breath, “Lame,” while smirking. “Bakatsuki, I heard that!” You said, nearly forgetting that yelling will kill you at this point. “Good, I meant for you to!” He said with a grin, this time in a normal voice. “You heard that?!” Jiro who was sitting next to Bakugo claimed, surprised. “What did Bakugo say?” Kaminari chimed in excitedly out of curiousity. You flinched as his loud tone.
While on the different part of class, Kirishima claimed loudly. “Isn’t that kinda cool though?!” A sharp pain coursed through you once more. More and more chatters joined, your head felt light. Sometimes you forgot most of your friends were airheads, and you realize it was because most of the time you were one who started the boisterous parade. You sighed, somehow in fondness looking at all of your friends that seemed like already forgot your condition and just do things as they want.
“Yep, I’m going to die today.”
-
“Izuku, write your notes slower,” you whined, getting really really annoyed on the little sounds you were noticing. You weren’t usually this easy to be irritated but the scratches of pencils against everyone’s paper was seriously driving you mad. “A-ah yes, sorry (y/n)-san!” He whispered, being the considerate sweetheart that he was. You gave him a smile as a response, then turned your head promptly hearing the crisp of plastic wrap being opened, but quickly smirked at the opportunity,
“Sensei, Kaminari is eating a candy!” Kaminari froze, his hand mid-way on putting the sweet to his mouth.
“You snitch!” Kaminari pouted and threw away the candy. Aizawa sighed in exasperation before continuing the subject. You wrote a quick note, and made your friends passed it to the yellow-haired student.
I know you still have some in your pocket, Kami. I could hear them.
It was meant as nothing sort of a threat, you just wanted to see his usual funny reaction. Kaminari read it and stared at you in disgust. He wrote you back;
The quirk changed you, (y/n).
You chuckled quietly at your little banter. The dizziness aside, it wasn’t really a secret anymore that the quirk had some nice side of it as well. A low an irritated grumble caught your attention, ceasing your train of thought. Bakugo.
Does he always do that? Grumbling out of nowhere? I mean, you had to assume yeah, he does, being the grumpy guy that he is. So, you decided to let it slide.
A sigh of exasperation escaped you.
“Kirishima for the love of god, stop rapping under your breath, you think you’re the only one who had to listen to that?”
-
You know the thing where you said that the quirk had a nice side? Well, that did not age well. Lunch time came, it was like a storm rumbling, a mixture of hundred feet walking, running. A wave of people talking crashed into you, you almost thought that you weren’t going to make it out alive.
Again with not much hope, you put your hands over your ear, mentally finger-crossing that the students will quickly went to the cafeteria. Your head felt like it was splitting open, your eyes shut tight, until you felt someone put a noise-cancelling headphone over your ear.
You looked up, seeing Momo with her usual angelic smile. Still in distress, you managed to mouth out a thank you. She nodded as a response, then made a gesture for you to look at the classroom door.
There was Bakugo.
Though you couldn’t really hear him very clearly, it was obvious that he was yelling based on well, his raging face. He was shouting something and pointing over the students that are on the corridor still with the same expression, then they’re immediately rushing, leaving only a handful of students going out and about.
You took off the headphones, whispering, “What just happened?”
“Well, as soon as lunch break started he told or rather rudely ordered me to make, this” She touched her own creation, the headphones. “Then he went off and yelled at the other students to go to the cafeteria faster,” she explained, letting out a chuckle.
“Well, I’m off the cafeteria, later, (y/n)-san” She waved, making her way outside. You started to laugh quietly to yourself, feeling the affection building inside your chest. Only that fearless spiky blond would yell at random people offhandedly, and this time for your sake.
You stood up, looking around. Seemed like everybody had gone to eat their lunch, leaving only Bakugo, leaning on the doorway of the classroom while his gaze was settled on the corridor, perhaps ready to bark at someone that was too loud, or too slow. You saw that the poor Aoyama had been evicted from his usual eating spot as well. And you might have to agree, the sound of his fancy metal utensils would be a bit much to process at that moment.
The male perked up and turned his head at your footsteps.
You stared at him lovingly, smiling from ear to ear.
“What?” He said subtly, cheeks painted with the slightest pink, one look away and it will be gone for sure. A little giggle escaped you, then you went for a hug, resting your head on his shoulder.
“Thank you, Katsuki,” you whispered, silently hoping there are more words to express gratitude because what will you do with all these overflowing feelings in your chest?
He let out a content sigh putting a hand on top of your head, “Yeah, yeah, be more careful next time, clumsy idiot.”
“And whose clumsy idiot is this?”
You felt the weight of his head on you, using you as a chin rest. Bakugo grumbled under his breath, pleased.
“Mine.”

He would never forget when it happened. The memories wouldn’t even leave him to dream peacefully. They would come crawling and wake him in cold sweat with a shout stuck in his throat.
You were someone he held dear. You had been there for him when he needed support. Never mind how many times he refused, how cold he used to be, you never left his side and stubbornly clung to him. You had overheard his story during his confrontation with Midoriya at the Sports Festival and you weren’t afraid to tell him after it was all over and to once again offer him your support and friendship. He was grateful and before long, his feelings manifested into love. He loved you unconditionally. He didn’t know how to express himself though.
When you got burnt by Dabi while your little group was trying to save Bakugou and Tokoyami during the Training Camp incident, he got so angry with both the villain and himself for not confessing his feelings earlier. The thought of something happening to you and him not being able to tell you that he loved you scared him. So during that night, at the hospital, he held your hand, as you struggled to not fall asleep due to exhaustion, and confessed. It was awkward but also cute and it made you smile and laugh which was more than enough for him. He was happy that he made you happy. And that’s how you started dating.
Everything was so perfect when you moved into the dorms and you two got to spend every minute together.
But the Universe always has to put people through challenges. To test them. And it happened so suddenly that it took your breath away and swept you off your feet.
The news had been blasting about a dangerous villain who managed to kidnap people easily. Nobody knew how or what Quirk he had and it was causing big trouble. What was even more troublesome was that his victims were very young girls, obviously virgins. Rumors were that he was a crazy Satanist using virgin blood to summon demons. Perhaps a bit farfetched but it wouldn’t be surprising if it was the truth considering that the world was full with insane psychopaths.
Your Quirk was powerful – very powerful. It allowed you to manipulate earth and Kirishima often joked and compared you to Toph. Speaking of Kirishima, you were very good friends. Your quirks were compatible as well. He was the best defense and you were the best offense. That’s why the two of you decided to intern together, choosing Fatgum.
“Hey kiddos, what do you say we go out tonight and eat some takoyaki?” grinned the hero and you and Kirishima nodded vigorously while Tamaki only smiled softly in agreement. And the four of you ended up walking and chatting while eating, inhaling the aroma of the street food and absorbing the lively atmosphere. Even though it was night time there were many people out.
“Oh, I’ll go buy some ice cream!” you exclaimed when your eyes landed on the colorful, creamy texture of the ice cream and the boys nodded, telling you their favorite flavors.
“Why don’t you guys go buy some waffles and other sweet things while I get your ice creams? I’m dying for sweets tonight,” you offered and they laughed before walking away. And that’s when you heard it – the most melodic, soothing and beautiful voice.
“Beautiful, sweet girl, come to me,” it swayed on the wind and tickled your ears, beckoning you to follow it. And you did.
“Hey, little lady, where are you going? I’m still not finished with your ice cream!” exclaimed the seller but his voice got drowned. Everything got drowned, fading in the background in the shape of a dull lull as your brain concentrated only on the man calling you.
“There you are. I knew you would come,” came in the voice from your right and you slowly turned your head to look at the man. He was young, tall, very handsome with his sun-kissed skin and light blue hair tied in a low ponytail. Even under the fancy suit the muscles were visible.
Your legs moved on their own. You weren’t sure if you even felt your body at this point. You were completely entranced. You came to stand right in front of him, leaning your head on his chest and closing your eyes, allowing yourself to sink into him when his arms encircled you.
“What a good girl. No resisting whatsoever,” he chuckled and it sent pleasant shivers down your spine.
“Let’s go home.”
。☆ ❅ ★━━━━ ❅ ━━━━★ ❅ ☆。
“What do you mean gone?” whispered Shouto and Kirishima sniffed, looking at the ground. “What do you mean gone, Kirishima!?” shouted the boy this time and the redhead grit his teeth, letting the tears fall.
“I-I don’t know! She was with us a-and a few seconds later s-she was just gone!”
When they had returned to the ice cream parlor, you were gone. They had asked the seller but he had been able to only point at the direction you had gone towards. They had run immediately but there had been no sight or sound from you. Nothing. They had immediately contacted the police. By now it was obvious that you had been kidnapped by the same villain that was terrorizing the town.
Shouto was numb. He stared at his classmate before his eyes moved to the floor, hands clenching so hard that his nails dug into his skin, forming crescents that bled. He was both freezing with fear and burning with anger.
“I have to find her,” he muttered but when he tried to pass through Kirishima, the boy stopped him.
“Are you out of your mind? You can’t do anything! Nobody can! Because no one knows anything about this villain!” cried out the redhead and Todoroki grit his teeth.
“Move,” he grit out as he attempted to pass but Kirishima held him again.
“Todoroki!” before he could say anything else, Shouto threw him the iciest glare. Kirishima and the others, who had been watching the display with tears in their eyes and shaking forms, didn’t even have time to be shocked when Todoroki encased all of their feet in ice.
“That’s not cool, man!”
“Don’t do that, Todoroki-san! It’s dangerous to go out!”
Their shouts fell on deaf ears because at the moment, Shouto’s mind was clouded with the thoughts of finding you and killing the bastard who took you.
He barely got past Aizawa and the Hound, leaving UA grounds and going to the place where everything happened. He narrowed his eyes as he rattled his brain about the possibilities of this villain’s quirk.
“What do you have so far?” he asked himself quietly as his brain brought up all the news he had read so far. Many of the cases were mysterious because nobody was there to see what happened. But there were a few cases when there were witnesses and all reports stated that the girls were going on about their day when all of the sudden they stopped and switched directions, walking towards something or someone as if in a trance. From what the ice cream man had told Kirishima, you had reacted the same way.
“Walking towards the source as if in a trance, huh? Is it like Shinsou’s Quirk then? Mind control?” he mused, rubbing his chin. “But if it was mind control there should’ve been some form of contact. She was surrounded by crowd. What kind of contact can one create in a crowded area. Even if his quirk doesn’t require an answer like Shinsou’s, or eye contact like Aizawa-sensei’s, there still should be some sort of cont-“ he gasped lightly. But of course. It has to be his voice. His right side grew colder and colder, frost seeping from his feet, covering the ground gently and baring footprints.
“Hold on a bit more, Y/N. I’m coming,” he vowed quietly, cold, smoky breath sipping through his lips.
。☆ ❅ ★━━━━ ❅ ━━━━★ ❅ ☆。
You hissed, the stinging pain causing you discomfort. It was one thing getting hurt while fighting because the adrenaline was not letting you experience the pain, at least at the beginning, and completely another when someone was slicing at your body with a blade.
“That’s right, princess. Bleed some more for daddy,” he smirked, licking his lips impatiently as he squeezed your wrist, causing the blood to flow harder and making you feel dizzy. How much did he bleed you? Two, three, five times? You didn’t know. But he made sure to do it often because you couldn’t use your quirk in such condition. That and it gave him immense pleasure. You couldn’t understand him. Did he enjoy drinking blood? Was he offering it as a sacrifice? Was it part of his quirk or something? At this point you didn’t care. You knew that you were going to die. Nobody knew anything about this villain. There were only speculations about his quirk. No one would walk through these enormous mahogany doors and put an end to this.
“We’ll continue later. I have something else to do now,” he grinned at you as he left the golden goblet on the cabinet next to you before he moved to the bed and laid down next to what you assumed was a girl. You willed your vision to clear. Yes, it was a girl – probably his previous victim – and she was dead, chest torn open as if the bloody eagle was performed on her, drenching the sheets in red.
“Isn’t blood beautiful? Don’t you want to be surrounded by it all the time?” he asked you and you barely managed to shake your head, a scream of horror trapped in your vocal cords. “Don’t worry your pretty little Y/H/C head. You’ll be joining her soon,” he laughed and a tear slid down your cheek.
And at this moment, the doors burst open, getting completely shattered by sharp shards of ice. Splinters showered the occupants of the room, causing the man to shout enraged.
“Who has the audacity-“ he didn’t get to finish because more ice came towards him. The man evaded gracefully to the left, only to be engulfed in flames, making him scream. Before he could get serious burns, the flames were extinguished and he was quickly encased in ice from head to toe.
“Shouto,” you whimpered and smiled shakily. The boy’s head snapped, eyes widening. He had been so insanely worried but thankfully you seemed to be alright. When he actually reached you and took a good look at you, he realized that, no, you weren’t really ok. You were covered in slices and bleeding. He saw red. He twirled sharply, fully ready to shatter the ice alongside the person trapped in it when your voice stopped him.
“Please, Shouto! It’s not worth it! Don’t put a bad name for yourself before your career has even started!” you pleaded and he gulped, lowering his hand and turning to look back at you. You shot him an encouraging smile, trying to signal him that you were alright. He didn’t say anything as he burned the ropes and scooped you up in his arms. The police and other pro heroes were swarming the place for investigation and arresting the villain. Shouto was angry with himself for taking so long to notify the police of what he found and to formulate a plan. And you could see that he was blaming himself, that he was angry and disappointed with himself. You wouldn’t have that.
“Hey, look at me,” you whispered as you cupped his cheek. That made him stop. The two of you were far from the beeping sirens and the bustling cops. “I’m ok. Nothing happened to me. Just a couple of cuts that Recovery Girl can heal. You did well, Shouto. You saved me. You are my hero,” you told him gently as you snuggled into his chest, hearing his rapid heartbeat that was slowly beginning to calm down. He pressed a kiss to your temple and tightened his hold on you.
“I’ll never let anything happen to you again. I promise,” he murmured and you encircled your arms around his neck, bringing him closer and kissing him on the cheek.
“I’ve no doubt.”
。☆ ❅ ★━━━━ ❅ ━━━━★ ❅ ☆。
You were accepted with happy cheers and a cake from your classmates. They literally threw you a party and it made you so happy. They were truly a blessing. Poor Kirishima blamed himself and you had to smack him over the head a few times to get it through his thick skull that he was not to blame.
It was the first few nights that were the problem. The very first night, you had a nightmare and you snuck into Shouto’s room. He had had a nightmare too and gladly accepted you into his embrace.
“I can’t get this girl out of my head. That was… the most horrifying scene I’ve seen. I dream of myself in her stead,” you sniffed and Shouto hugged you tightly as if imagining you melting into his embrace so he could protect you from the world.
“I dream the same,” he admitted quietly and you looked him deeply in the eyes.
“We are going to be ok. As long as we are together, it’s going to be ok,” you whispered hopefully and he gave you a smile – that little pretty smile he had reserved only for you.
“Together then.”

Please Assist Me (Chapter 4)
Chapter 1 Chapter 2 Chapter 3
He Said
Not long before Christmas my focus was very much on Sophia. We’d been spending lots of time together planning Christmas gifts and she was managing my social diary, helping me avoid the worst of the invites and be available for the ones I wanted to attend. I told her that in previous years, I’d often commit to something and then find it clashed with a far preferable one that arrived just days later. She was a genius and doing the holding note so I could politely bow out if I chose to without offence.
One Friday Sophia was busy wrapping Christmas gifts at my house and I was out at a script read through. I returned after lunch and as I was pulling into the drive, Sophia nearly knocked me flying as she was reversing off it, going like a bat out of hell! I scrambled off the bike and went to her car window to see what was going on. She was clutching the steering wheel, shaking from the shock of the near miss. She was barely making sense, but I got the gist that Miguel was in hospital after a fall and she needed to get Eva and then go there.
It clearly wasn’t safe for her to drive so I offered to drive her there. The Porsche wouldn’t do so we took her car. Before we set off, I got her to explain in proper sentences what had happened and where we needed to go. She was teary and I tried to comfort her patting her leg and squeezing her hand before I set off as fast as I could safely.
Once we had collected Eva, Sophia sat in the back with her and the little girl told her in graphic detail how Miguel had been climbing on top of a playhouse and lost his grip, slipping down onto the ground and smacking his head backwards. There had apparently been quite a bit of blood and Miguel had been screaming. Sophia did her best to reassure her and I resolved to play the role of stoic, calm protector even though I didn’t know if I was right to be so reassuring.
Once at the hospital, I carried Eva into the ER so we would get there quicker and took control at the reception desk. We were quickly ushered into a side room where Miguel, looking pale and wan was sleeping. Miguel’s teacher informed us that they had done an x-ray and his ankle was broken – they were waiting for someone to come and take him to have a special boot put on. In the meantime they were keeping watch over him because of the bang to his head. Standing by the bed, Sophia stroked his little hand, staring at him glassy eyed. She told me later that it was the horror of what had already happened and how much worse it could have been that sent her into shock which manifested in her knees suddenly buckling. Instinctively, I supported her, breaking her fall by throwing my arm around her waist to stop her from falling.
She Said
It was seeing the blood matted in Miguel’s hair and realising how much worse it could have been that made my legs give way. Keanu’s arm was quick to grab me and stop me crumpling to the ground.
Then he carefully turned me to face him and took my face in his two big warm hands and held my gaze. It was as if everyone else melted away and I just focussed on him as he reassured me.
“Listen, Sophia, everything is going to be OK. Miguel is in the right place and he will be O K” he emphasised each letter, his eyes sincere and calming “OK?”
I nodded and he pulled me into his arms and held me, stroking my back, not seeming to mind me wiping my tearstained face on his t shirt”
Eventually I pulled away.
“sorry about your shirt, I got it a bit wet”
“No problem, now sit down there with Eva and you’ll be the first thing he sees when he wakes up, I’m gonna go see how long the boot is gonna be”
From then on, I felt calmer, like someone had taken the burden of worry away from me. Even though we didn’t yet know if Miguel had a concussion, Keanu’s words had soothed me and made me ‘get my shit together’. I cuddled Eva on my knee and waited for Miguel to wake which he did shortly after, proclaiming it ‘pretty cool’ that he was in hospital and telling me how brave he had been.
“Hey little man” Keanu greeted him warmly as he returned from making his enquiries.
“You OK? They’re gonna come soon and take you to put your ankle in a special boot soon to help it mend.”
“Cool”
Keanu grinned at me and mouthed “told you!”
I blushed and rolled my eyes knowing maybe I had overreacted a tad.
Once Miguel was discharged, we all agreed that Pizza was what we needed to round off the day and after picking some up on the way, we headed back to my place so we could get the kids in bed soon after dinner.
The kids were excited to have Keanu there at bedtime but the trauma of the day had exhausted them and so they were out like lights moments after we shut their doors.
In the kitchen we poured some wine and cleared up together
“Keanu I can’t thank you enough for today. I really don’t know what I would have done without you, my mom is out of town and Javier’s not nearby anymore as you know so………”
“Stop! stop!, it was no trouble … anyone would have done the same”
“Oh no they wouldn’t!”
He just shrugged and blushed a little.
He was going to head home and called his car service but it was quite late on a Friday and they couldn’t help. He said he’d get an Uber but that idea filled me with dread so I offered to put him up for the night and run him home in the morning. It was the least I could do and I had a spare room. It would be a nice way to thank him.
He Said
That night, and the morning after Miguel’s accident that I spent with Sophia and the kids, can only be described as one of “cosy domesticity”
In the evening, after we’d decided I’d stay, we’d shared a bottle of red and chatted about how she’d manage with Miguel who would have to stay home from school until after Christmas. Then we’d just chatted about our festive plans, movies we wanted to see over the holidays and, as always, books. She remembered that she’d finished “The Brothers Karamazov” and had loved it, returning the book and wanting more Dostoyevsky recommendations. I had to confess to not having started “Normal People”, a book she’d loved and loaned to me after I’d given her the Dostoyevsky.
“I will get round to it, I promise – probably in the new year - I’ll have more down time when I’m in San Fran. I’ve been kind of tied up lately”
Sophia raised her eye brows and I could feel the flush rising up my neck rapidly as I realised what she was thinking
“I didn’t mean!......”
“None of my business if you did mean that Boss” she teased making me chuckle.
“Well I think I’ll be back to the single life soon anyhow?”
“oh?”
“Yeah – I mean I’ll be away a lot next year filming – maybe 6 or more months and…..” my voice trailed off as I wondered how or whether to articulate to my PA why I just didn’t see my relationship with Anja going anywhere.
“And” she pushed, well she didn’t push she just left the space for me to speak
“And the connection, it’s just not there you know, much as I like her and we have so much in common…. It won’t ever be more, be enough”
I remember letting out my breath hard and Sophia ,who had been looking at her hands in her lap, suddenly looking up and smiling softly.
“Feel better to let that out?”
I nodded and squeezed her hand in thanks.
“Thanks, for listening”
“no problema” she smiled. “come on, I’ll go check your room is tidy and we can get some rest – I’m pooped”
In the morning, Sophia made pancakes with bacon and maple syrup, the best I’d had in a long time. I told the kids how I’d stayed in a hotel in Austin once and they had a machine that made pancakes in the shape of the state of Texas! Like I say, it was cosy, domestic and fun. I didn’t really want to be dropped home to my empty house but eventually that’s what happened and we returned to our usual routine until Christmas.

WIG REVIEW: HILLBILLY ELEGY
I ACTUALLY WATCHED THIS MOVIE Y’ALL. I promised I would watch some Oscar movies instead of prestige TV shows with bad red wigs so I sorta did that: I watched Oscar bait. Because lordt knows this movie is not winning any Oscars (and if it does, it is truly the asterisk Oscars). THIS YEAR YOU GUYS. There is so much to discuss in this movie. Yes, the wigs too. Also there are lots of spoilers but here’s the thing: THIS MOVIE IS AWFUL AND YOU SHOULD ABSOLUTELY NOT WATCH IT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES AND INSTEAD JUST READ THIS REVIEW. I WATCHED THIS HORROR SO YOU DON’T HAVE TO! YOU ARE WELCOME!
We begin in Kentucky 1997. AND EVERYTHING IS JUST SO KENTUCKY 1997. All landscapes/cars/people are beige and broken and depressed. We meet JD who is good at biking and saving turtles and spending the summer with his messed up family. HE IS ALSO A TERRIBLE ACTOR AS IS THE OLDER VERSION OF HIM. Important note: I did not read this book and the real JD is an awful Libertarian asshole and nothing about his story, his book, or this movie should be supported. I AM HERE FOR THE WIGS, Y’ALL. MOVING ON!
As promised, Glenn Close as JD’s grandma MAMAW (YES THAT IS HER CHARACTER NAME) looks exactly like Gene Shalit. A friend of mine made this comparison and I cannot unsee it. Amy Adams, straight off (ok maybe several years off?) deglamming for Sharp Objects is just completely frizzed (and kinda strung) out. These wigs are truly abominable as is this film. Anyway, they leave Kentucky and go back to Ohio where they live and where it is somehow more depressing than Kentucky.
But ok the wig, y’all. Amy Adams hair is is as shitty and unmanageable as her character which might have been a choice? Still, this wig is a tangled, dried out nightmare that cannot be defended (nor can this character’s child abuse and drug problems). Within moments of returning to Ohio, Amy Adams scolds her child for allowing a gifted dog to pee on her wall to wall carpeting and then the cops have to break up a car slap fight (of her slapping her child!) that spills out into a neighbor’s house. SHE MIGHT BE THE WORST MOM IN HISTORY BUT SHE SHOULD DEFINITELY BE ARRESTED FOR WIG CRIMES.
ONTO GLENN CLOSE - SHE LOOKS LIKE GENE SHALIT. THE END. Whoever approved this wig is a huge fan of American film critic Gene Shalit sans mustache. It is the only possible explanation. AND THIS PATCHY MAKEUP. I CANNOT YOU GUYS. I realize that everyone was aiming for deglam Oscars but they went too far.
ANYWAY. This film flashes between 1997 and 2011, where older JD (again also a terrible actor) is somehow in law school at Yale (OK?) and dating Freida Pinto who this film claims is normal law school age (FUN FACT: she’s 37). Older JD kind of has his life together other than the fact that all the snobs of law school cannot deal with this hillbilly kid who doesn’t know what a salad fork is. And then JD’s sister (played by Haley Bennett aka offbrand Jennifer Lawrence who I actually prefer more) calls and says that MOM IS IN TROUBLE PLEASE RUIN ANY LAW PROSPECTS AND COME HOME EVEN THOUGH MOM IS ABSOLUTELY THE WORST. AND HE DOES YOU GUYS!
Amy Adams’ 2011 wig/makeup/everything is probably the visualization of 2020? I assume this wig was made from leftover parts from Glenn Close’s Gene Shalit wig grafted onto a Halloween fright wig. It could very easily work for a swamp witch costume if you didn’t care about the quality of your swamp witch wig. IT IS THE WORST AS IS SHE. So she was in trouble because she overdosed on heroin...of course she did. After driving all night to get to Ohio, JD gets a call for a second interview at an important law whatever and just HAS TO GET BACK TO NEW HAVEN in the next like 6 hours which still feel like 600. The whole time he’s dealing with Amy Adams and her fright wig, it is a race against time to see if he’ll make it back and secure his future. I guess this is the plot of the movie? I could honestly not tell you. Basically the whole film (if you can call it that?) is strung together vignettes of strung out Amy Adams and yelling Glenn Close that never really add up to anything? BUT THERE IS SO MUCH YELLING ALWAYS. It’s like the opposite of a slow burn - it’s just constant flames and not the cool gay kind.
In any case, we flash back to the ‘90s where Amy Adams’ wig is basically everything Tonya Harding ever hoped and dreamed for (other than that Olympic medal...also Amy Adams would have been a much better casting choice in I, TONYA which had vastly superior wigs BUT I DIGRESS). We see how this drug habit developed - Amy Adams was a nurse and hoarded pills! This leads to the most truly outrageous film sequence I have seen in a long time where high as hell Amy Adams roller skates through the halls of the hospital where she works in her damn nurses scrubs and obviously immediately gets fired. Also her dad dies! Also she tries to kill herself and ends up screaming bloody murder (also covered in blood) in the middle of street and then goes to rehab (rehab doesn’t work). And then gets married to some rando. And then she gets some new job and needs JD to lend her some pee so she can still be a nurse. This all happens in the course of like 10 minutes. Like I said, this movie is constant insane vignettes - it’s like 100 plots at once and also no plot at all.
And then JD - definitely out of nowhere - develops a gang of terrible drug addicted teenage friends (sure!) who steal/crash cars and make everyone super pissed at JD. ALSO! For reasons unknown or ever explained, Glenn Close ends up in the hospital herself and then has the realization that only she can save JD from his effed up life AND TEARS ALL THE IVS OUT OF HER ARM AND STORMS OUT OF THE HOSPITAL WITH NO CONSEQUENCES OR EXPLANATIONS AS TO WHY SHE WAS THERE IN THE FIRST PLACE! YOU GUYS.
Also! JD tries to steal a graphing calculator for school from Radio Shack (this is for sure the most 90s sentence I’ve written in a while!) AND GLENN CLOSE IS PISSED! She lays down the law and also buys the graphic calculator herself even though that means they have to live off meals on wheels. BUT! Then he gets the best grade of the entire class on his math quiz and I DEMAND TO KNOW HOW HE KNEW HE HAD THE BEST GRADE IN THE ENTIRE CLASS AS THIS IS NEVER EXPLAINED OR SHOWN AND I NEED ANSWERS! Regardless, the graphing calculator not only saved JD’s grade point average but maybe set him on the path to Yale??? The concept that consumerism is the only thing that will help you as a “hillbilly” is really troubling and bespeaks the issues with this work of non-fiction as a whole. Anyway this movie really want you to know that GRAPHING CALCULATORS SAVE LIVES!!!
There is also a wig battle royale between Amy Adams and Glenn Close wherein there are absolutely no winners (but we, the viewer, definitely loses most!) It is honestly unclear to me how this fight ends (or how any fights end in this movie) because every interaction turns immediately into a fight and when said fight reaches its zenith, the movie cuts away to another vignette! Regardless, the wigs are complete garbage AS IS THIS MOVIE.
Back in 2011, Amy Adams refuses to be admitted to a rehab facility and older JD drives her back to her druggie boyfriend’s house which looks like this and I was like...hold up where have I seen this house before?
The answer is: 2010′s THE FIGHTER ALSO STARRING AMY ADAMS DEGLAMMING HERSELF FOR AN OSCAR SHE DIDN’T WIN! Ok actually in comparison, these houses aren’t that similar other than they are depressing houses with multitier front porches BUT STILL.
Anyway, JD leaves Amy Adams and her sad swamp witch wig at some random motel where nothing is resolved between them at all and then he drives all night back to New Haven whilst talking to Freida Pinto on the phone (SHE NEEDS TO SLEEP TOO, DUDE! HOW DO YOU THINK SHE IS PLAYING 14 YEARS HER JUNIOR! SLEEP!) And then...he does get to the interview and....the movie ends!! WHAT!TRULY AND FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART: WHAT DID I JUST WATCH AND WAS IT A MOVIE? I STILL DON’T KNOW!
There is an epilogue of pictures of the real people and you guys: MAMAW LOOKED NOTHING LIKE GENE SHALIT. Also why do I even care about these real people???? Yes the real JD made something of himself....he wrote the book on which this movie is based and became a Libertarian asshole and worked with Peter Theil?!?! OK??? I guess the full story is in the epilogue? But this movie absolutely begins and ends nowhere and in between we are treated to a lot of nonsensical yelling and terrible, awful, no good wigs. I IMPLORE YOU: DO NOT WATCH THIS MOVIE!!!!!! MAYBE WATCH SOME YOUTUBE CLIPS OF GENE SHALIT INSTEAD!
VERDICT: DOESN’T WURQ

Be a Better Me Ch3
AN:I know having Kaito's robot self have more or less biological functions is a little weird. But someone, even Kaito, woulda noticed him not eating. Or bleeding. Or sleeping. So weird almost biology it is.
Chapter 3
Surprisingly it’s Hakuba, not Jii, who barges into the room first.
His hair is a mess and his sleeves are rolled to his elbows with stains on his shirt that can only be ‘blood’. There’s something fragile in his expression like he’s expecting to find Kaito on his deathbed and a deep relief when Kaito meets his eyes with an impassive stare.
“You’re okay,” Hakuba says.
“For a certain value of okay, sure,” Kaito says.
Hakuba scowls. “Don’t even start. You almost died in my arms.”
“I didn’t know you cared that much,” Kaito says, only half sarcastic.
“Of course I care,” Hakuba says. “I might want to arrest Kid, but I never would want to see you dead.”
“Funny,” Kaito says drily, “because that’s what an arrest would get me.”
Hakuba bites his lip, tense as a riled cat. Kaito half expects to be pounced on like a mouse, but Hakuba takes a breath and settles. “Are you in pain?”
“I have a leg that got vivisectioned and reconstructed, a bullet hole in my shoulder and a chest full of dented ribs,” Kaito says. “What do you think?”
“I don’t know,” Hakuba says, “since I don’t know how much you feel in the first place.”
“What, the screaming didn’t make it clear?” It’s cruel to say that probably, and Hakuba goes grey-white, looking sick.
“Right,” he says. “That was a foolish question.”
“It hurts but not unbearably,” Kaito says, taking a bit of pity on him. “Like a deep bruise so long as I’m not moving. I don’t know if I’m on a painkiller or if my system’s just…filtering it out for the moment. I don’t know if I can even be affected by pain killers.”
“You can,” Hakuba says, still pale. “Some. The Professor—you can.”
“Ah.” Kaito doesn’t want to know what Hakuba saw. Well, he knows some of what he must have seen. “I haven’t taken anything since… I wasn’t sure.”
Hakuba swallows, shaking off horrors of Kaito in pieces. “You weren’t always like this,” he says.
“A robot? No.”
“When… How…?”
“Before you met me. As for the how… I can’t exactly say I get the science of it.”
Hakuba’s face pinches. “The whole time.”
“The whole time,” Kaito says tiredly. “I didn’t know for a long time, so don’t feel bad about not noticing. So far as I can tell, the whole point of…whatever it is I am was to mimic human life as close as possible.”
“You didn’t know.”
“Imagine my shock,” Kaito says, “when I found my own corpse.”
Hakuba pales impossibly further looking like he’s going to be sick. He sits heavily. “Corpse.”
“I have all the memories of Kuroba Kaito,” Kaito says as detached as he can make it. “Up to and including the moment of his kidnapping. I don’t have any memories of how he—I died.” He takes a breath. “The body’s in the basement of this building actually. His body. My body. However we’re framing it.”
“Why?” Hakuba asks horrified.
“Kuroba Kaito’s just fine,” Kaito says in a flat, dead tone. “He’s right there, going to school, living his life. Surely the body’s a mistake. It’s not like there could be two of him.” Or three. He still doesn’t know what happened to the remnants of the other robot. He doesn’t really want to look either. More honestly and openly he adds, “I don’t know what to do with it. Him. My mind says I’m him, but he’s dead and I’m not human so who the hell knows.”
Hakuba shakes his head.
“The person who made me and killed him is dead,” Kaito says. “There was another robot, a less…human… robot. It killed the doctor. Tried to kill me. I think something went wrong with its programming or maybe it wasn’t meant to mimic a human like I was. I don’t know. I know I don’t have skin that peels away or rockets in my elbows.” He sees skin peeling in his nightmares often enough.
“It feels like… there should be something…”
“To do?” Kaito gives him a cool stare. “There isn’t. There’s no justice here. There’s a corpse and there’s me, a poor replacement with a dead man’s face.” Doubly true with Kid.
Hakuba’s face twists. “You’re the only Kuroba I know. You said you didn’t even know the difference so how the hell does that make you a poor replacement?”
“Because I’m not him,” Kaito says, voice breaking, mask shattering. “You found me and you saved me, but why? The wires had to be obvious.”
“How could I not?” Hakuba says. “You were dying and aware and bleeding out in my arms, how could I not do everything to keep you alive? You might be mechanical, but you still have breath and a heartbeat and a sharp, human mind.”
“What does it say that a person can be reduced to numbers and code?”
“What does it say that emotions are just collections of chemicals and thought and memory just electric firing in the brain,” Hakuba shoots back.
“I took his place.”
“From what I can tell it sounds more like you keep him living on,” Hakuba says boldly.
Tears well up and Kaito stubbornly doesn’t shed them. “Why does everyone keep acting like I’m human?” he asks.
“In your mind are you any different?” Hakuba asks, like it’s a genuine question.
“I don’t know,” Kaito says feeling small. “I just know that physically I am.”
“Well,” Hakuba says, “I for one can’t believe a mere robot could possibly outthink the entire Japanese police force.”
Kaito snorts bitterly. “Like bots haven’t been beating humans in strategy for ages. Chess masters weep. Try again.”
“Fine,” Hakuba says. “I don’t think a robot would cry from fear and pain and express terror over dying. Or do magic tricks just to see Aoko-chan smile. Or give a damn about whether it can run circles around the Japanese police force, but we both know you have an ego that loves to be satisfied doing just that. You’re as human as can be given the circumstances.” Hakuba boldly sets a hand on Kaito’s good shoulder and Kaito stares at the point of contact. “Regardless of how your current existence started, you’re as alive as I am so far as I can tell, Kuroba-kun.”
It’s profoundly weird to be touched by Hakuba’s words, but Kaito is. It’s almost like they’re friends at the moment, not rivals. Kaito has to look away. “Thank you for not letting me die,” he says after a moment.
“There wasn’t any other choice I would have made,” Hakuba says seriously.
There’s a cough from the door, Jii standing there with a phone in hand and a tense expression. Hakuba looks at him and draws back.
“I should go,” he says. “Now that I know you’re going to survive.” He nods to Jii and walks toward the door, and a tiny part of Kaito wonders if he’ll go looking for Kaito’s body or not.
But that’s not really something important. Hakuba seeing it or not can’t bring back the dead. Jii takes Hakuba’s place at Kaito’s bedside with a sigh and slow, heavy movements that make him look every bit as old as he is.
“You’re not arresting me?” Kaito calls after Hakuba.
Hakuba glances back with the familiar expression of disdain on his face. “Kuroba, if I catch and arrest you, it’s not going to be because you’re bleeding out and vulnerable.” Like it’s obvious that he won’t take advantage of what he knows and yet also isn’t going to stop chasing Kaito. Kaito blinks. Well, Hakuba always has had his own system of honor. Kaito can’t say he understands it though.
He waves and leaves and Kaito looks at Jii to see him watching Hakuba vanish with a conflicted expression.
“Jii?”
Jii shakes his head. “I’m glad you’re okay,” Jii says quietly. “I should have been there last night, ready for anything that went wrong.”
“I’m the one that told you I’d be fine on my own,” Kaito says. “And they hit me six blocks from the heist, it’s not like we were expecting that.”
“Still. I should have been there for you.” Jii passes a hand down his face. He’s old enough to be Kaito’s grandfather, looks every year of that age, worn down and exhausted. “I spoke with your mother.”
“Oh.” Kaito tries to curl into himself but can’t and so just hunches his good shoulder and ducks his chin.
“You didn’t talk with her.”
“I… I meant to eventually.”
“Kaito-bocchama,” Jii sighs, a reprimand and exasperated care all in one.
“It’s not really something to bring up over a phone call,” Kaito says. “I was hoping…” Chikage hadn’t visited in months. When he was sixteen she’d come back every other month for a week or so, but since he turned seventeen… It was a conversation he’d hoped to have in person, or perhaps never at all if it could be avoided, no matter how much it was a needed conversation.
“She’s coming home,” Jii says tiredly.
“For Kaito,” Kaito says, meaning the real Kaito.
“For both of you,” Jii says. “You could use your mother’s support.”
There’s no point in protesting that she isn’t really his mother. Kaito just nods. “Is she… Will there be a burial for him?”
“It’s too soon to say.”
They can’t just keep Kaito in a glass box, forever preserved like some messed up Snow White tribute. It’s not what he’d have wanted. It’s not what Kaito wants. He’s not sure what he does want, but leaving his body in a box like a specimen isn’t it.
“The Hakuba boy has a surprising amount of medical and chemical knowledge,” Jii says after a moment. “There were some things he cleared up from the doctor’s notes last night. He might be able to understand them better than Hiroshi-san.”
“Are you suggesting making Hakuba a proper ally?” Kaito asks with brittle humor. “Hakuba. Hakuba whose father’s the head of Tokyo’s police forces Hakuba.”
“Hakuba-kun isn’t his father,” Jii says, “and he’s proven to care enough to ignore the legal scope of right or wrong.” He sighs again. “Kaito-bocchama, the fact of the matter is neither Hiroshi-san nor myself is an expert in this field, and you’re likely going to need more than what our knowledge can provide long term.”
“Hakuba,” Kaito stresses.
“If he’s willing you might as well take advantage of it. Otherwise we’ll have to start looking elsewhere and it’s harder to be sure who you can trust.”
Trust Hakuba or trust a stranger? Well, irritatingly, it’s pretty clear who he’s more likely to trust. It’s some kind of cosmic irony. The world, Kaito’s learning, seems to have a sick sense of humor or he wouldn’t exist at all.
It’s a scary thought though, the idea of handing over what made this body work and letting Hakuba study it. It might be more trust than he can give to anyone. With Jii he didn’t have much of a choice. “I’ll think about it,” he says.
o*O*o
It takes three days—an astonishingly fast time—for Kaito be up and walking again. In part this fast recovery is thanks to the fact that he doesn’t actually have to heal a bone; a bonus for metal bones he guesses. But on the other hand, the internal healing is taking time. The Professor had tried to explain his understanding of how Kaito’s bio-mechanical processes worked—the synthetic blood, tissue, and skin all having a self-replicating and repair process to keep him operational without needs for frequent major repairs. The technicalities go in one ear and out the other, and Kaito will have to do a lot of reading to get a better idea of how his own body works.
In the time Kaito’s stuck at the Professor’s home, Hakuba visits every day, somehow managing to be far less abrasive than normal, and maybe even verging on friendly. It’s kind of creepy and Kaito will be relieved to get on with their usual bickering banter the moment Hakuba gets over whatever weird combo of guilt and pity he seems to have for Kaito at the moment.
Most of his visits also lead to him studying Kaito though, so maybe Hakuba’s just got science on the brain instead of detective-ing. It had been more than a bit uncomfortable to have him on his knees, examining Kaito’s leg and knee joint.
Kaito’s still not sure if it was because it was Hakuba doing it, or if it’s the implications of having someone on their knees at his feet that was the bigger discomfort, and he’s not going to examine that too closely. The last thing he wants to do is find out how this body might differ on hormonal levels. He’s spent this long pushing those sorts of thought out of his head, he can keep doing that.
His leg’s in a light cast, just to ensure that everything heals up correctly, and Kaito’s already finding it obnoxious. He’s broken bones before, but every time it’s a hassle to deal with. He hobbles in circles on crutches, resigning himself to a week of this at least probably, knowing it could be a lot worse.
Most of all he just wants to go home. No offense to the Professor, but he misses his house and his bed and his doves. He’s always hated being a guest and he wasn’t exactly an invited one this time.
There’s a soft knock on the door to the guest room Kaito’s using and he sighs. Probably Agasa again. He keeps double checking Kaito’s healing and Kaito gets it, really, it’s all experimental and new, but it’s annoying and he’s vibrating out of his skin with how he can’t even literally climb the walls.
“Come in,” he says, less graciously than he should considering he is, of course, a guest. But if Agasa had a problem with Kaito’s attitude he could take it up with Jii because Kaito’s been through so many emotional rollercoaster moments lately he’s done. Just done.
There’s silence and Kaito glances up from trying to see if he could get the crutch to work more comfortably with his still healing shoulder and looks straight into familiar blue eyes. “Kaa-san,” he says numbly.
She stares, doesn’t come closer to hug him or say anything and Kaito remembers; he’s not her son.
“…I didn’t think you’d be back so soon,” Kaito says to break the silence.
“I’d have been here sooner if I could,” she says. There’s nothing in her voice to let on what she’s thinking and Kaito can’t remember ever seeing her so closed off. It’s her version of Toichi’s poker face and it’s an iron wall.
The silence stretches and the guilt rises back up in his gut. “I… should have said something as soon as I re—”
“What did we do for your last birthday?” Chikage asks, cutting him off.
Kaito blinks. “We… went out to dinner with Aoko to that Korean barbecue place. We shared bulgogi and you took me to get a tailored suit because you said it was a good time to have nice formal wear that actually fit.” She’s almost cried because he looked so much like his dad when he was younger.
“When did you lose your first tooth?” Chikage says, showing no reaction.
“When I was six and a half,” Kaito says immediately. “I lost both my front teeth because I messed up a flip and landed on my face.” It had hurt and he’d cried, terrified that he’d lost them for good until his mom explained he was going to lose them anyway. They hadn’t even been very loose, just starting to wiggle. “I drank from the gap with a straw until they started to grow back in.”
Something in Chikage’s shoulders loosens, but her face still remains a wall. “Why are you afraid of fish?”
Kaito flinches, instinctively trying not to remember one of his childhood traumas. “C-can I not answer that? F-finny things are evil and whoever created koi ponds is a sadist.”
“And what wat your first magic trick?”
“Vanishing coin,” Kaito says. “Only I had trouble with it so Oyaji had to show me about four different ways to do it before I was able to get one I could make work. Of course then I had to get all of them right over the next month.”
Chikage closes her eyes and lets out a slow sigh. “Kaito.”
“Yes?”
She shakes her head. “No, you don’t understand. You’re still Kaito.”
He realizes she was testing him. Testing how close to Kaito he was and he curls in on himself. “I’m what’s left of him.”
She shakes her head again, but finally crosses the room to pull him into her arms. “I’m sorry.”
“Why are you sorry?” Kaito asks, off balance and vulnerable, feeling like a child in her arms. He has the memories but technically he’s never been a child. Or, well, technically he isn’t even a year old yet.
“I wasn’t here when you needed me,” she says. “You’ve always been so self-sufficient that I forget sometimes you’re not an adult yet.”
“I’m not a kid.”
“Well you’re my kid, and I haven’t been a very good mother.” She holds him a bit tighter. “I’m going to try to do better.”
“But I’m not your Kaito,” Kaito says.
“You’re not,” she says and it’s almost a relief to hear it even as it hurts, for someone to acknowledge that he isn’t the same. “But I’ll mourn him in my own time and you’re him in every other way that matters. You’re not a replacement,” Chikage whispers, voice shaking, “but you are a part of him.”
“Have you seen…?”
“No. I wanted to see you first.”
And make sure he really is her son, in a way. Kaito closes his eyes. He can feel her shake, crying silently, but he makes no effort to move from the embrace. He needs this too. This is a situation where there is no winner. Her son is dead, and there’s an identical false copy in his place, like Kid pulling of a jewel heist. Kaito just isn’t sure what his flaws are yet, apart from the physical, that mark him out as the fake. He’s lucky that they seem to love him anyway.
Chikage pulls away, wiping her eyes on the back of her hand. “Thank you. I know it’s been you I’ve talked with for months now, but…”
“You had to be sure,” Kaito says, understanding.
Chikage nods. “Are you well enough to come home or are you still under observation?”
Kaito pouts. “I think I’m fine, but Jii and the Professor want to do another day of tests just to make sure my leg is healing right.”
“Jii mentioned it was bad.”
“Well, they replaced the fibula in my leg and had to fix all the connections and my knee joint so…”
She looks a little paler, glancing at his walking cast with new understanding. “You shouldn’t be walking at all.”
“I don’t heal like a human does,” Kaito says with a grimace. “It’s…faster. You’d think I wouldn’t need to heal at all but the bastard that built this apparently liked realism.”
“That’s probably for the better,” Chikage says after a moment. “If you functioned too differently…”
He’d what, stop feeling human? Kaito’s already there, feeling like some unholy science experiment most of the time instead of a robot, but that’s honestly not really better. He’s not going to say that to his mother though. If he was a little more robot he’d hurt less, probably feel less… and possibly end up exactly like the other robot. Shit. Okay, yeah, maybe the realism is for the best.
“Jii said you haven’t had lunch yet,” Chikage cuts into his thoughts, “and that it’s important that you do.”
Kaito grimaces again. “Yeah. Funnily enough, my system processes food for fuel just like a human’s. It’s no wonder I never noticed anything was different. But they have me on a weird diet because apparently the fake skin and all,” he gestures at his leg, “it can self-repair, but it needs certain building blocks to do it. If I see another kale protein shake I am going to throw it at them.”
Chikage laughs, wiping the last of her grief from her face. “I’ll have to see if I can put together something that tastes better.”
“Please. Also I haven’t had sugar in days. I’m having withdrawal.”
“…Can you get withdrawal?”
“I have no idea, but I’m craving chocolate like crazy.”
She snorts. “You always have liked chocolate.” Her hip bumps his good side gently, like the times growing up when he helped in the kitchen. “I’ll see what I can do.”
While Chikage works her magic in the kitchen with help of the Professor and Jii, Kaito gives in to the restlessness and hobbles back and forth around the wide open living area. The Professor, for all he’s an inventor and scientist, seems to also be a bit of a mystery and romance geek. He has a collection of hard-bound novels on a bookcase, and while there’s a few science books in the mix, most of it’s fiction.
Kaito would like to be playing with a deck of cards, or spending some quality time with his doves, but since his cards were ruined along with his Kid suit and he doesn’t have any of his birds on hand, a novel isn’t the worst way to pass time. Although Kaito’s never been a huge mystery fan. He wrinkles his nose at the Sherlock Holmes collector’s edition. Hakuba’d like that.
Kaito has just started in on a romance instead—very tasteful cover full of wistful stares and absolutely no nudity—when his mom wanders out of the kitchen with a blender full of something that looks chocolatey. Jii follows with his hands full of kale like he expects Kaito to choke that down raw. Gross.
“Well, I couldn’t get a concession on the shake, but this will taste a lot better,” Chikage says with a grin. “Plus, chocolate.”
“Heck yeah,” Kaito says.
“You really should,” Jii starts, but Kaito’s mother waves him off.
“One meal isn’t going to hurt.”
So Kaito puts down the book, hobbles over to get a glass, and that’s when the front door opens without even a knock, and a child wanders in with a scowl behind oversized, thick rimmed glasses.
“Hakase, I need a breath of sanity and some help with the watch,” the child says, not looking up as he kicks off shoes like he lives here. “It keeps sticking when… I…” He catches sight of the group standing in the hall between the kitchen and living room. His eyes flick from Chikage’s pitcher, to Jii’s handful of kale and land on Kaito’s crutches, following up to his face where the gaze freezes. “What the hell?”
“Well,” Kaito says, “that’s the first time an elementary student’s sworn at me.”
“Aoko-chan swore at you all the time,” Chikage corrects.
“That was when we were both in elementary school. There’s a difference.”
“Hakase?” the child calls a bit louder, uncertain.
The Professor bustles out of the kitchen. “Ah, S-Conan-kun, I didn’t know you were coming over!”
“What’s going on?” Conan asks. Kaito realizes this is the kid he saw from the Professor’s roof that one time. Clearly he’s pretty close to Agasa, but it’s not like Agasa’s going to go around spilling secrets to a six year old.
Agasa looks between Conan and Kaito’s group. “Ah, I have a few guests at the moment, Conan-kun, and I’m doing some work as a favor for a friend.”
“A friend,” Conan says, his shock turning sharper.
Kaito shivers as those eyes pass over him again. It’s like he’s being dissected by a laser beam, and Conan’s weirdly interested in his face.
“Yes.” Agasa laughs awkwardly. “Jii Kounosuke is an old friend, and the others are…”
“More or less his extended family,” Chikage cuts in cheerfully. She glanced Conan over. “He looks just like you did when you were that age, Kai-chan,” she says. “Well, a bit neater than you ever were.”
“Are you saying I was a slob?”
“Kaito, honey, your hair has never laid flat a day in your life. Add that to your tumbling and getting into trouble…”
Kaito scowls. The kid looks like someone stuffed him into nice clothes like they’re trying to make him a mini adult, what with the blue suit jacket and tiny bow tie and how his hair’s carefully combed. Can’t help having a cowlick though. And those shorts… What a dorky sense of style. Conan catches him looking and scowls right back. Defensive little guy.
“Who are they anyway?” the kid asks, his voice tilting up like he’s trying to sound younger than he looks, which kind of fails with his entire body language, but Kaito’s not going to be the one to give him acting lessons. It probably works on some people, but that’s because a lot of adults barely look twice at children. “He looks a lot like…”
“Ah, this is Kuroba Chikage and her son Kaito,” Agasa says. “And that’s Edogawa Conan. He’s—”
“Related to the Kudos isn’t he?” Chikage says, looking at Conan intently. “He looks so much like their son Shinichi did as a child.”
Conan blinks rapidly. “Uh. Shinichi-nii-san is my cousin,” he says. “Wait, Kuroba as in the magician Kuroba Toichi?”
Chikage grins. “Exactly the one. You remember Yukiko don’t you, Kaito?” she asks tilting her head in Kaito’s direction.
“Uh.” Yukiko, Yukiko… He had a vague recollection of an actress and a smiling woman with ringlets in her light brown hair. “Not well.”
Chikage pats him on the shoulder. “You were five, so I’m not too surprised. You were such a charmer, giving her a flower and everything.”
The memory comes into focus, handing off a flower to a beaming woman because his father had said that’s what you do when you met a pretty girl; you were polite and gave them flowers to leave a good first impression. He’d done the same to Aoko not long after too. “Oh yeah.”
“Well, it’s nice to meet a relative of theirs at any rate,” Chikage says. She finally hands Kaito a glass of protein shake and he almost fumbles it before holding it with his bad arm and keeping his good one for the crutch.
“Yeah,” Conan says, flicking Kaito yet another look.
“Is it the injuries?” Kaito jokes, “because I assure you it’s normally my charisma drawing attention.”
It’s both hilarious and cute how Conan’s nose wrinkles for a split second before he covers it up again—definitely needs acting lessons—and shrugs. “You just look a lot like Shinichi-nii-san.”
Chikage laughs. “They would wouldn’t they?” she says, and Kaito doesn’t get the joke really, but fine. There’s apparently a guy running around with a face that could be his own. At least this time it’s not another murder-bot so he’ll take it.
Of course, face doubles make him think of the corpse downstairs, and that’s… Yeah. Yeah, no, not thinking too close about that. At least this double must be running around alive and well he supposes.
Well as interesting as being confronted by a child half his size is, Kaito has other things to be doing. Namely eating, sitting, and trying to convince his mom and Jii to take him home. “Right,” Kaito says. “We were going to have lunch, but that’s taken care of.” He mock toasts with his glass as much as he can with his arm in a sling. “It looks like you need to talk, so we’ll be in the kitchen.”
Conan shuffles like he’s feeling a little guilty for barging in, but it’s not like he interrupted anything actually important. However he’s feeling, it isn’t enough to keep him from gripping the Professor’s sleeve and pulling him off to have a private conversation.
Kaito sinks into a kitchen chair and takes a sip of his shake. Mm, chocolate. “This tastes ten times better than what they’ve been feeding me.
“It’s not nearly as healthy,” Jii says with a sigh.
“You know, you absorb more nutrients when you enjoy what you eat,” Kaito shoots back. Humans did anyway. But since there's no way of knowing if that applies to him, he’s just going to claim that factoid as valid.
Jii sighs like he’s the victim. It’s not even his taste buds.
Chikage snorts and pours herself her own glass. “He’s always been picky,” she says to Jii.
“I’m not picky.”
“You cut most seafood out of your diet and you live in Japan.”
“I’ll eat ffff—seafood,” he grumbles. “But only the kind I like. Shrimp and crabs and clams are fine. And it’s not like I boycott anything that has finny things as an ingredient, it’s just the less it resembles them the better.”
“See?” she says to Jii. “Picky.”
Kaito rolls his eyes. The chocolate shake, whatever else is in it aside, helps. Sitting here with his mom helps. He hadn’t realized how much he missed her actually being there, but it’s calming. Even though he knows it doesn’t work that way, having a parent present makes him feel a bit more like things are going to be okay. Like somehow Chikage will fix things even though he knows full well that’s not how it works. She can’t just sweep in and fix the Kaito downstairs or make Kaito actually human. She can’t wipe away any new traumas either. Couldn’t when Toichi died, can’t now. Parents aren’t all powerful and don’t have all the answers. But it’s pretty nice to let her take over being the adult for the moment.
He’s tired.
The last swallow of shake is rich on his tongue. He could probably pick apart what’s in it, but he’d rather enjoy it. Especially because life keeps reminding him how fleeting the good moments are lately.
“So, could I go home if I promise to let Hakuba look me over every twelve hours or something? Pretty sure I’m not going to fall apart at this point.”
Jii looks heavenward like he’s asking for patience. Chikage pats Kaito’s shoulder. “One more night,” she says. “I’ll talk to Agasa-san about what we can do to keep track of how you’re doing at home.” Her smile slips a bit. “I have a few arrangements to make before we move you anyway.”
“Ah.” Right… “Do you want me to come with you to…?”
She shakes her head. “I’d like a bit of privacy if that’s okay.”
“Yeah.” Kaito looks at the empty glass in his hand. “He’s your son so…”
Jii coughs softly and takes their glasses to wash them and Chikage stands to go face her dead son. She gives Kaito a wan smile and he wishes he could keep her from going and looking. She needs to look, but if it haunts Kaito, it’s definitely going to haunt his mother.
Kaito flees for the roof for lack of better places to go. He takes the romance book with him but he kind of doubts he’ll end up reading it.
It’s another beautiful day. It feels like the weather should reflect such heavy things like dead sons and imperfect copies, but nature doesn’t care what the piddly beings scrambling around on the earth’s surface are experiencing, it just does what it always does.
He ends up pulling out his cracked cell phone, now with a strip of clear tape across its front to keep from breaking worse until he can get a new one. There’s an unread message from Hakuba that goes on and on about the chemical properties of Kaito’s blood compound. Apparently Hakuba must have borrowed his grandfather’s lab space again. “So glad I’m providing you entertainment,” Kaito texts back sarcastically.
“You should know how your body works,” Hakuba sends almost immediately. “I’ll be over tomorrow to go through more research notes.”
It’s Hakuba who’d eventually hacked into the doctor’s personal computer. Kaito doesn’t doubt that the facility upstairs had been full of even more detailed information, but there had been enough filed in the remains of the living area and foundry for everyone to work with. Agasa might have been able to use the synthetic blood from the chest freezer and patch Kaito’s skin with similar samples, but it’s Hakuba who’s intent on understanding how they work and can be reproduced. It’s just weird how Hakuba’s not hounding him about the Kid thing at all.
“I might go home tomorrow. I’m trying to make it today, but they’re not budging.”
“Kuroba, don’t be an idiot. Your leg is still in a delicate state and we still don’t know if the loose wire in your head he fixed was the only one.”
“Vision has been working normal and no brain problems here. Besides, my mom is here and she’s going to be watching closer than Jii probably.”
“It’s good for there to be another set of eyes,” is all that Hakuba sends back and Kaito scowls at the message.
There’s a few from Aoko, worried about him, but he’d made it sound like he had a bit of an accident and was fine but not really up for visitors. It would only work for so long, so that is another reason to return home. Kaito’s life is a mess these days. Just one lie after another.
Although… less lies at the moment than there have been. He wants to believe that’s a good thing, but less lies mean more people hurt with the knowledge that Kaito’s dead. It’s a tossup whether it’ll be a relief long term or just another problem.

The Report Card – Fantasy High Sophomore Year Ep 2
Boggy the Froggy!
Welcome back, ya’ll! We jump back in with our Bad Kids (or 4/6 of them anyway) the very next day. Fabian sends Gilear out on a coffee run on the threat of bodily harm. His mom–who, if you remember is low-key a total badass–tells Fabian that if Gilear doesn’t come back from the quest alive, she’s going to duel him to the death on top of the house. Yikes. At Chez Thistlespring, Gorgug’s parents give him another very detailed sex talk and then remind him that he lives in a world where magic is very real so any and all dreams he remembers should be treated as omens.
At the haunted house, Adaine wakes up having had portentous dreams like everyone else which is doubly concerning I have to imagine considering (1) she is the eleven oracle and (2) as a full elf she’s supposed to trance, not sleep and dream. Luckily for her nerves, she cast Find Familiar the night before and summoned an emotional support familiar which she gave the amazing name Bogariel Frogariel aka: Boggy the Froggy.
Meanwhile (and I needed to switch paragraphs because Kristen is doing the D&D equivalent of playing Twister while everyone else is playing Checkers as she is wont to do) Kristen is talking to Tracker about changing Yes? again because she is filled with doubt about her god of doubt but the one thing she clearly doesn’t have doubt about is her relationship with Tracker because it’s been less than a year and she already sees wedding bells in their future. Wild. She also invites Tracker on the quest, rectifying what I thought was a wild oversight last week.
Everyone meets up and they realize Fig and Riz are missing. They (specifically Fabian) can’t get Riz on the phone (which has never happened before) and all of Fig’s stuff is missing. They head over to Riz’s office to see if they can find him but, before that, Tracker cancels the church of Yes? because, sure.
There are signs of a struggle at Riz’s office, but no blood. They find a picture of Riz’s super-spy dad (Pok) with his arm around someone who appears invisible to them (though the spot is circled in red). They also find claw marks going up to a mirror. Adaine stops Gorgug from touching the mirror which would have driven him insane and had him attack the group. She sees a twisted version of Riz in the mirror which no one else can see until she describes it (suspicious). Then, she dispels magic and the Riz appears in the room…and attacks them (roll for initiative baybee)!
Fabian is flipped the F out. Kristen decides to chill out and drink Riz’s coffee–much to the incredulousness of everyone else (she’s on those chill existential dread vibes). Adaine and Gorgug are stricken by fear but they’re able to snap out of it quickly. Once they’re sure it’s not Riz (the doppelganger is going full creepy horror movie monster with the head twisting and biting and junk), they start going full throttle but Kristen gets a clutch roll and lands a banishment on Nightmare Riz (who was invisible at the time). Also, Adaine finds a gun but no one is down with her packing heat without proper firearms training so she reluctantly puts it back. They confer with Sandra-Lynn and they find out Fig has, for some reason, gone to Bastion City (the capital) and Gorthalax is missing. Also, because Emily is Emily whether she’s present or not, they find out that Fig has decided to multiclass and she is now a bard/warlock with her demon dad as her patron. Those might be connected because, as her patron, Gorthalax can now find Fig at all times.
Sklonda, in the meantime, has been investigating a robbery at the mall. They end up there too because Gilear (who is back from his coffee run) said he saw Fig’s bus in the area. They tell Ragh to meet them there and then head over (Gorgug in the old family car which he buys from them for 30 gold (the cost of a pony)–the amount Adaine suggests after the Thistlesprings reject his insane offer of 1000 gold). Also, Kristen leaves her brothers some gold secretly which is sad and also I think not the best way to handle that, but the intention is good. The robbery was of a gem–non-magical I believe–called the Devil’s Heart. [Edit: And apparently Fig’s doing.] Fabian shows up, tries to be helpful, and then eats glass. Normal stuff.
The group tries to figure out what’s going on with Fig by calling the hotel she’s at and basically doing a straight improv comedy routine, each passing the phone around with a bad story until Adaine just hangs the phone up. Then, they find out from Sklonda that Pok’s partner is a tabaxi (cat person) named Kalina and she is in the empty space in the photo. Sklonda and Sandra-Lynn can see it even though the Bad Kids can’t.
With that information gathered, the group leaves Elmville for the first time on the way to the Hotel Cavalier in Bastion City and, hopefully, Fig.
Detention
Fabian for Intern Abuse
Poor Gilear. Fabian solicits increasingly complicated coffee orders from his friends to make Gilear’s job harder and tries to get them to threaten Gilear on their behalf. Even Sandra-Lynn was like, bro. Lay off the guy. Bad form, sir. (Hilarious, but bad).
Honor Roll
Adaine for Rocking Her Portent Rolls
Adaine had a 19 and a 4 for her portent rolls this session and she used them very judiciously. The first was her 19 which she gave to Gorgug who was about to fail his saving throw and touch the mirror which would have led to him attacking everyone (she has a vision of his beheading her in a rage–sidenote love that Brennan makes her portent rolls actual visions instead of just having the mechanical effect of changing the roll happen). The second was a 4 which she gave to Brennan who was rolling for concentration on Nightmare Riz’s fear spell. What a power move to stare your DM in the face and say, “You roll a 4.” Amazing. Portent rolls are so good you guys. Also, bonus points for coming up with the name Bogariel Frogariel.
Random Thoughts
Fabian’s response to his mom’s ultimatum that she will fight him if Gilear doesn’t return alive? “Damn, guess I have to fight my mom.”
“MAGIC IS REAL AND SO IS MY FROG.”
Brennan describes Boggy as just the most archetypal looking, round, squishy frog and I want a plush of his yesterday. Or a stress ball! It would go with his whole emotional support thing in game. I love that Siobhan picked not the potentially “useful” or “cool” animal. She went full Marie Kondo and was like, “What’s gonna spark some joy?” Boggy also can give her the help action, which is great!
The episode was great even 2 cast members down, but they were missed. On more than one occasion, I was like, “This is more quiet than usual. I wonder why–ah Emily.” We better get her reaction to Boggy as soon as she’s back.
Kristen brings up the concept of patenting a god which is wild. We also get an answer to the question I had last week about Tracker’s cleric status–she still is a cleric of the moon goddess. The moon goddess is just chill with her followers not being exclusive.
Fabian sans Riz is a hilarious mess. For anyone who likes them together as friends and/or romantically there was a lot of Content. Fabian being like, “Idk about Fig but something is def wrong with the Ball because he always answers on the first ring when I call him.” Him canonically forgetting that he has a name other than The Ball (that’s the name in his phone, obv). And, the coup de grace, him investigating RIz’s office, but only for signs of his name. Him trying to Investigate like Riz, rolling a nat 1, and literally eating glass (“I thought I could taste fingerprints!”).
“Coffee’s ordered, is the Ball dead?”
Adaine as everyone is clowning on Fabian for possibly making out with the Hangman: The Hangman is much more human than my bitch sister.
Nightmare Riz, who they still think is actual Riz at this point, pops out of the mirror and Fabian and Adaine’s reactions respectively are, “You can’t do these things!” and, “It’s like 60% of our grade.”
The idea of Gorgug going from a terrified scream into a barbarian rage scream is very funny. Where are the animatics people?
Oh, speaking of people, Fantasy High was trending on tumblr the morning after this stream. Nice job, guys!
The talk that Gorgug’s parents give him about all dreams being significant is something I always say in movies/books/shows like this. You have protagonists who *know* they live in a magic world and they have weird dreams and it’s not until 2/3rds of the way into the story that they’re like, “Wait. My dreams…mean something?” Bitch, what?
Gorgug’s initial coffee order is Hot Chocolate with a shot of decaf.
Everyone is very chill with Tracker coming onto the quest. Adaine just has one rule: No sex in the tent while they’re also in the tent. Kristen asks like she’s offended Adaine would feel the need to say that but like…come on.
At first, I thought the invisibility in the photo was similar to the non-Adaine bad kids not being able to see Nightmare Riz until she described him but they still couldn’t see the woman in the photo after Sklonda described her so not sure what was going on with the mirror.
I went back to the episode where Riz finds the photo of his dad (First Kisses and Last Words at around 1 hour, 27 mins in) and in that photo it’s of his dad and his mom. So either (1) it’s a different photo, (2) Brennan forgot/retconned something, or (3) something seriously screwy is going on. I will also note two observations here. Sklonda mentioned that Kalina doesn’t drink but was holding up her hand in a toast like she was drinking in the photo. That seems too specific a detail to not mean anything. And the second thing is, last ep, we did learn about a servant of the Nightmare King called the Shadow Cat and Kalina (if that is her real name) is a tabaxi so that’s something to think about.
With all the complicated coffee orders flying around, Adaine just changes hers to a black coffee to try and make Gilear’s life a little easier (her original order was a Peppermint Mocha–sans the threat of violence to Gilear Fabian was offering). I do really love that Adaine seems genuinely concerned about the guy. SOMEONE should be. And it’s consistent with her characterization of just being generally well mannered and empathetic.
Kristen getting the banishment on Nightmare Riz is something she did after Ally asked for it and Brennan was like, “lol, sure on a 19 or 20.” Boom. Rolled a 19. Just like in the prom fight. So the lesson here folks is don’t give your players a conditional yes and then expect the dice to bail you out.
Kristen’s existential crisis is so crazy to me because she’s having, like, a prototypical Crisis of Faith™ (and pretty realistically) except, unlike in real life, she has certain knowledge about the existence of gods, life after death, and the means to communicate with those deities in the present day like…I feel like you’re crisis-ing wrong, girl. She’s crisis-ing like she just deconverted from Christianity when I feel like what actually happened is closer to, like, quitting a sorority or realizing you hate your major or changing political parties.
the nature of humanity is just that every so often someone accidentally invents homestuck helioism again
Ragh had a dream matching up with Gorgug’s (but he didn’t realize it was Gorgug in his dream) which means something and I’m sure we’ll figure out what soon enough.
The Fabian eating glass scene is another one where you truly need to see it to understand how great it is. Lou is equally game to have Fabian be the coolest person who ever lived or a huge baby and Fabian running away crying because he has glass shards in his tongue is incredible. Hilariously, he runs into Ragh in the food court who has also eaten glass in the past (“Glass is literally invisible.”) and they bro bond over it so hard (“That’s my boy!”) that Tracker and Kristen are like…are they a thing?
The other crazy scene is the gang passing around the phone trying to convince the hotel receptionist to give them info about Fig. Kristen comes up with the name Teddy Guyger (and Zac and I at the same time are like, “Did you get the name Teddy because you have a teddy bear in your inventory rn?”). Fabian tries to drop his dad’s name. Their first move for some reason isn’t to give the phone to Gorgug who is also a part of the band. Adaine just hangs up the phone like Peppa Pig. Exquisite comic timing.
“I cast bane on Gilear.”
I love the running joke of Adaine having visions throughout the day of her friends in the process of doing dumb BS.
Nightmare Riz going after Fabian’s good eye was big gross. Thanks Brennan, I hate it.
I wonder if what’s going on with Fig is completely different than what’s going on with Riz. Just because they’re gone for the same reason irl, doesn’t mean they’re gone for the same reason in game. Nightmare Fig could be a fun fight though.
As someone whose fave thing in D&D is not combat, I thought the fight in this episode was great. Interesting concept, good chance for in-character reactions, not too long .
Ragh upon meeting Tracker: Check it out: I’m gay. (Tracker: Tight.)
Fabian, who has known Cathilda his entire life: Do maids dream?
In this ep, Kristen and Adaine rolled 2 nat 20s each (Kristen rolled one for initiative also but it was lowered by her modifier), and Gorgug and Fabian each rolled 1. Fabian also rolled a nat 1 (which, again, led to him Eating Glass).

sly san who sacrifices (v) || c.s (atz)
➳ pairing: reader x choi san (ateez)
➳ word count: 3849
➳ genre: badboy au; fluff; angst
➳ synopsis: to the school, he may be a bad boy, the worst of the worst, but to you, he’s choi san, father of three cats, your best friend and ultimately, the boy you’re in love with.
>>>
Phone in hand, you run for the club as fast as you can.
Your feet slap against the wet pavement, little ripples in the puddles of rain left in your wake as you rush towards your destination, eyes glued to the glowing screen of your phone, fixed firmly on that tiny blinking red dot. Your legs are burning from the expected strain of them, but you don’t let up till you’re at the main entrance of the building that San is at.
Neon strobe lights hurt your eyes and you can already hear the raucous timbre of the disco music being blasted inside, the sound reverberating out onto the street outside. You spot the to be party goers mingling behind the red rope, chattering excitedly and dressed to the nines in killer outfits that shine brighter than your future and probably cost more than your college education.
This is definitely not your scene.
Swallowing, you glance down at yourself… you hadn’t really been thinking straight when you’d left the house, you’re dressed in a simple pair of shorts and a tee, nothing too scrappy but definitely not anything suitable for a night out at a club. A groan leaves you and you stare at the daunting sight before you once again, chewing nervously at your bottom lip as you contemplate turning back… and maybe just confronting San another day…
But then you snap back to your senses and give yourself a little slap, because what if this is your last chance? What if after tonight, San tells you he doesn’t want to speak or see you anymore? As unrealistic as it sounds, as irrational as your fears are, if there’s even the slightest chance it could happen, you’re not taking it – Choi San is worth more than your pride.
So you gather your courage, square your shoulders, and march to the main entrance at very front of the line.
Instantly, the mindless chattering all around you falls silent, so silent you could hear a pin drop on the wet asphalt. Panic and just sheer awkwardness crawls over your introverted skin, you weren’t made for places like this! But you force your unease down and meet the bouncer in the eye, he’s a hulking mass of steely muscle with a glint in his eye that almost scares the shit out of you literally (and probably would have if you hadn’t remembered that you had a mission to accomplish here).
He looks you up and down with a dismissive eye, barely needing to incline his head, he’s so tall. Then he leans down the slightest bit to look you directly in the eye with a near frightening stare, muscles in his neck rippling. “The end of the queue is over there, little girl.”
You swallow involuntarily, a bead of sweat running down the back or your neck and sliding down your clothes, the weight of everyone’s gazes on your back is highly uncomfortable but you ignore it in favour of keeping your gaze even and your voice steady. “I’m here to find a friend.”
“I don’t care what your reason is, in case you didn’t hear me the first time, the back of the queue is there.” The bouncer enunciates more slowly for you this time, as if you’re the one who’s drunk. “I can’t let you in unless the queue is gone, kid. There are plenty of people who want to get into this club who’ve been out here waiting since dusk.”
Your fingers twist in the hem of your shirt from nerves as you desperately try to think of a way out, unsure of what else you could do to make the man let you in. Glancing back at the queue, you’re horrified to see that it stretches around three blocks and disappears down a street, further than your eye can see. Waiting isn’t a viable option, but you don’t really have another choice unless it’s…
You force a polite smile on your face to mask the sheer panic you feel and meet the bouncer in the eye; he does not look the least bit amused. “I’m looking for Choi San.” You manage to say without bumbling like a complete fool, but using San’s name does seem to have its intended effect.
The bouncer’s eyes widen imperceptibly in surprise, just enough for you to notice up close. Then his eyebrows pinch together and his mouth pulls downwards in an unamused scowl. “It’s impossible for a person like you to know Choi San. Don’t lie to me, kid.”
You dig the bracelet out of your pocket and shove it in his face, from the way his lips part with a little intake of breath you know he must have seen it before and part of you is… happy... that he recognises it, for some strange reason. “I’m here to return his bracelet to him and then I’ll get out of your hair. Now, are you going to let me in or not?”
You’re not used to being so confident and out there, but there’s a rush of adrenaline flowing through your veins right now from the anticipation. The bouncer’s eyes narrow and for a long moment, you hold his sharp gaze evenly, unwilling to back down till he lets you in.
He backs down first with a sigh, moving towards to the rope that holds the door closed, unhooking it and ushering you inside. Behind you, you can hear angry protests of the people standing in the line, but you ignore them in favour of stepping into the club, eager to get to where San is.
The bouncer grabs your wrist with a warning glare and you whirl around to stare at him in confusion. “If something happens to you in there, missy, it’s not on me. Don’t get into any trouble and get out as fast as you can.”
You grin at him. “Thanks.”
Then you duck inside before he can say anything else.
Immediately, all five of your senses are assaulted by loud noises and bright lights coming from every direction. Bright purple neon juxtaposed against cool black leaves your eyes reeling from the colour contrast, the smell of smoke, sweat and even more alcohol so heavy and thick in the air you can taste it on your tongue. Biting on your lower lip in an attempt to remain calm in the midst of a mass of sweaty, gyrating human bodies, you stand on tip toes and try to search the dark, flickering room for San.
It proves to be a near inhuman feat. Groaning, you pull out your phone and search the map once again, sure enough, your little blue dot has overlapped with San’s red one to form a blinking purple circle, indicating that he is indeed here at this club… but where is he?
“Hey, little missy. This doesn’t look like your scene.” A voice comes from behind you and you jerk in surprise, whirling around to see someone standing there against the wall, exuding such an air of casual confidence that you can’t help but be blown away by it. His hair is blond and tousled into waves, held away from his forehead by a black bandanna to show off beautiful, dark eyes that remind you of sweet, sweet danger. Every instinct goes on high alert instantly and you actually find yourself taking a step back to take him in, he’s dressed in an all black ensemble that’s simple and stylish at the same time.
He meets your eyes with a smirk that you, for some reason, don’t find sleazy and cocks his head to the side playfully, teasingly. “What are you doing here dressed like that, darling?”
You’re on guard around him, tense, and he can see it, he enjoys it. He hasn’t moved an inch but you feel like you’re the one who’s been backed into a corner like a trapped animal, dangerous tension sparking between the two of you as you meet each other’s eyes.
“I’m here for a friend.” You spit out, suddenly desperate to get away from this man that practically oozes danger and appeal all at once. There’s a look in his eye that makes unease bubble in the pit of your stomach and when he takes a step forward, you actually flinch, every muscle in your body getting ready to run.
“Oh? Where is he then?” The man continues stepping closer and closer, and you practically freeze on the spot when he comes within an arm’s length of you. You can feel his hot breath against your cheeks, smell the slight scent of cologne and smoke clinging to his warm skin, feel the heat radiating off him. You don’t even realise you’re moving backwards till you’re backed into the wall, so completely taken by the sheer intensity of his gaze.
He leans in close but never quite touches you, only letting his words brush your bare skin as one hand comes up beside your head, he’s too close for your liking, too seductive than what you can deal with. “Why don’t we leave this place, darling, just you and me– ”
You’re about to cut him off mid-sentence politely, saying that you really need to look for your friend, but he never gets a chance to finish his sentence.
“Get the hell away from her, Wooyoung!”
Your eyes fly open in surprise at the sound of that voice and in the next second, the man is ripped away from you violently and thrown against the wall to your side. Your hands fly over your mouth to prevent the shout of horror from escaping you, but the blond doesn’t seem the least bit fazed at the sight of your best friend pinning him to the wall by the neck.
“What the hell were you doing to her?” San snarls venomously, digging his forearm into the blond’s throat. The blond simply looks down at him with a cocky grin, completely unrepentant as he shrugs. “What does it matter to you?”
San’s face twists in fury at those words frighteningly quick, you feel every drop of blood drain from your face when he raises a fist–
“San!” You cry out, running to his side and yanking on his arm as hard as you can. You’ve never seen San like this, so dark and filled with rage that it almost scares you. “He wasn’t doing anything to me! Stop it!”
San hesitates, fingers clenching and unclenching as he considers your words, the impulsive white hot rage burning behind his eyes simmering ever so slightly. Then he rips his hand from the blond and storms out of the club, leaving the blond rubbing the bruises on his throat with an exaggerated sigh.
“I’m sorry!” You bow once quickly and turn around to chase after San before he can disappear before your eyes again.
The blond sighs at the mess around him and gestures for all the onlookers to get back to their business, making his way over to the bar counter and seating himself on one of the seats there. “Some ice please, Mr Bartender.” He fingers the bruise at his adam’s apple with curiosity, an amused smile tugging on his lips. “I haven’t seen San-ie this worked up since we got expelled from our old school. It’s rather fun to watch him, isn’t he?”
“You shouldn’t have provoked him like that, Wooyoung-ah.” A smooth baritone tells him dryly as he slides a mojito over to him with a disapproving frown. Wooyoung merely grins as he scoops out two ice cubes and holds them to his throat, feeling the cold numbing the ache there, but the adrenaline he feels rushing through his body right now makes it so worth it. “You knew who she was to San, don’t lie to me. It’s like you’re trying to get yourself killed.”
“If I hadn’t done that, that coward would have tried to escape the club. I saw him moving towards the back doors when she came, so I just put on a little show for him to watch. It worked.” Wooyoung shrugs, raising the glass to his lips and taking a mouthful of his drink. Then he yelps and spits it into the potted plant next to him as fast as he can, mouth puckering uncontrollably. “That was the sourest thing I’ve tasted my entire life! What the hell, Yeosang? We’ve been friends for four years and this is how you treat me?”
Yeosang snorts as he wipes his glasses down with a clean cloth, shaking his head. “It’s precisely because we’ve been friends for four years that I’m doing this. You need to stop living so on the edge, it’s going to get you dead in a ditch one day.”
Wooyoung simply shrugs. “I’ll be fine.” Then he winces and presses the ice cubes a little more firmly against his skin, muttering under his breath. “If that little shit doesn’t get back together with her by tomorrow morning, I’m going to wring his neck for him, the fool.”
Yeosang looks over at his friend from behind the counter and rolls his eyes, but there’s a good-natured smile on his lips.
“San!”
Outside, you chase after San into a dark alleyway behind the club, before he can take another step you grab his wrist firmly with both hands and yank him backwards. He nearly stumbles at the force of your insistence, unbalanced from drink and alcohol, but finally turns around to face you, head hanged and not quite meeting your eye, clearly uncomfortable.
“What were you doing here?” San mumbles, words slightly slurred and barely loud enough for you to hear. “Weren’t you supposed to be studying at home with…” He falters for a moment and you frown in confusion, how has he forgotten the name of his own friend?
“Seonghwa and I were studying, but you were acting weird this morning so I went over to your house to ask you what was going on! Claude told me you weren’t at home so I came over to find you myself, only for you to almost get into a fight with someone else–”
San snorts, slumping against the wall with his eyes closed as he rubs his temples. “Wooyoung will be fine. That little bastard knew what he was doing the whole time, edging me on… it was a smart move, I’ll concede…”
You pause for a second. Wooyoung, Wooyoung, Wooyoung… the name sounds familiar… then it hits you. Your eyes widen and you stare at San in shock. “Isn’t Wooyoung that best friend of yours? Are you drunk? You nearly killed him! He didn’t even do anything to me!”
San’s face darken at your words, rising to his feet and lurching forward to stand dangerously close to you. But unlike with Wooyoung, you don’t feel the least bit of fear – San would never allow himself to hurt you, drunk or otherwise. “What the hell were you doing in a place like this, you idiot? What would you have done if Wooyoung wasn’t just playing around and if I weren’t there? Don’t you know you could get hurt?”
“But you were there.” You fire back, insistent. “That’s why I went there. I want to be where you are, is that so wrong?”
San groans, dragging a hand down his face. “The kind of places I go to are the places you shouldn’t be going to! Stay away from me, alright?”
But you’ve had enough of his nonsense and yank the bracelet from your pocket, shoving it in his face. His own eyes widen at the sight and he tries to snatch it from you, but you jerk it out of his reach and shove it back in your own pocket fiercely. “Is that why you took it off, San? I thought we had a promise! Best friends forever, remember?”
You’re furious, but every trace of anger evaporates in the next second, you’re completely stunned when you see a tear escape San, one at first, than two, then more and more, until San’s head is hung and you can’t see his eyes anymore, tears streaking down his cheeks and dripping to the ground. Horror overtakes you and you step forward, gripping his arm tightly. “San! San, what happened–”
Before you can say anything else, San yanks you into his chest and buries his face into your shoulder, trying to stifle his sobs. You’re still upset with him, but for now you just wrap your arms around him, the charms on your own wrist jingling. It’s not like San to be this emotional, you think worriedly… he must have had a lot more to drink than what you had thought. Then he speaks.
“I can’t belong to you anymore.” He mumbles into the crook of your neck brokenly, warm trails running down your shoulder. You utterly confused at his strange words, but then he continues and then you finally get it. “Seonghwa’s so much better for you, such a better person, he’s nice, he’s sweet, he’s kind… I want the best for you, I really do, but why can’t I stop selfishly loving you and just give you to him instead?”
Oh.
Oh.
You don’t know what to feel for a second, every thought has fled your mind and you don’t know what to say, left wordless. San likes you. Choi San actually likes you. And he thinks you like Seonghwa.
This fool.
Your lips work to form words that you’re not even sure of, but before you can, you feel San slump against you, his weight resting on your shoulder and it’s all you can do to keep him upright, you can feel his snores against your skin. You don’t know whether to laugh or cry, instead you settle on doing both, a happy, weak chuckle escaping you as a single tear rolls down your cheek.
“Tell me that again when you’re sober, pabo.” You press a kiss to his temple and turn towards the mouth of the alleyway, pulling San along with you, his warm body pressed against yours. You hear San mumble drunkenly “morning?” under his breath, half asleep and completely knocked out, but you take another step forward, heart overflowing with emotions in this dark night.
Just until next morning.
You can wait that long.
The next morning, San’s eyes blink open, only to be pummeled in the face by a massive headache.
“Ow...” He groans, hunching over on the bed as he presses his fingertips against his forehead, it’s throbbing, alright. Just exactly how much did he drink last night? He clearly had one too many... had Claude driven him back?
Squeezing his eyes shut, he tries to remember the events of the night before... he recalls drinking at the bar with Wooyoung and Yeosang, his shock at seeing you enter the club, searching for someone who could only be him... He remembers trying to run away, seeing Wooyoung brazenly flirting with you and making you feel uncomfortable, red filling his vision and then...
What?
What had happened?
You.
Where were you?
Panic crashes into him and he jumps out of bed as fast as he physically can, bare feet touching the wooden floorboards of your room... your room... San’s brain stops working altogether as he gapes at his surroundings... a vase of spring daffodils he had given you a few days ago at the desk... framed photographs of him, you and Seonghwa on the walls... your biology textbooks on the shelves...
A jingling noise catches his attention and he raises a hand to stare at his wrist in complete and utter shock. It’s his charm bracelet, the one with a bell, around his wrist.
How did that get there? He clearly remembers leaving that with Claude before he left the house... unwilling to look at it again...
He looks down, and he’s shirtless. He looks around. It’s your room. He looks down at himself again.
He’s still shirtless.
San screams.
“What happened?” You burst into the room, holding a spatula menacingly and wearing a worried expression on your face. San only screams louder, yanks the blanket up to his chest and wags a shaking finger at you, looking positively horrified. “I... We... Room... Bed-”
“No, we didn’t sleep together, idiot, I took the sofa.” You roll your eyes and step over with three quick steps to gently press a kiss to his cheek. San immediately halts all movement altogether, becoming as still as a statue with comically wide eyes and a mouth hanging wide open. He doesn’t even move when you step out of the room, and a little part of you feels satisfied that you’ve finally managed to get him back for all those times he’s teased you before.
When you finally return with a tray of warm soup, a glass of warm water and some Advil, San is still standing there, blankly staring into space with one hand pressed to his cheek. You tell him to sit and he does, staring at you in shock the whole time.
“Here.” You pass him the cup and the pills and he swallows them with a gulp of water, shaking his head to regain his bearings. When he looks at you once more, you smile warmly at him with a little, knowing glint in your eye that honestly frightens him a bit.
“How did I get here?” San manages to croak out, his throat raw from the alcohol the night before. You grin a little cockily at him and his heart stutters in his chest, you seat yourself opposite him and take his hand in yours.
San’s eyes widen slightly, you’re behaving uncharacteristically forward with him today. It takes him by surprise but you don’t seem the least bit fazed, instead leaning even closer to meet his eyes with the biggest, brightest grin on your face.
Everything is going into overdrive, he thinks, slightly dazed.
“Someone confessed to me last night.” You whisper confidentially into his ear, eyes so bright and smile so positively radiant that he can’t help but feel happy for you, even though he absolutely despises what this means: Seonghwa must have confessed to you yesterday while the two of you were studying... and he... and he...
You continue rambling with a grin and San allows himself to wallow in his own grief for a moment while you’re distracted. “I’m so happy, you know! Because I’ve liked him secretly for such a long time, but I thought he didn’t like me back... Hey, San! Are you happy for me?”
San snaps back into reality, forcing a smile on his face that he hopes passes for genuine as he nods slowly, eyes downcast. “Yeah...” He can’t meet your gaze right now.
Then, all of a sudden, you smile at him, intertwining your fingers with him and raising your interlocked hands for him to see, your bracelets touching. Your eyes find him, determined and burning with intensity, and his breath leaves him for a moment at the latent fire in your gaze.
“San, would you be mine?”
San chokes.

Mannnn I haven't blogged blogged since I was in high school (I graduated in 2004, I'm an ancient and "wise" millenial/geny). Was I on blogger or blogspot? Obviously the background was black with purple and red comic sans type because Edgytm, it was super punk-goth-"don'tcallmeemo". It started out as a place to share my poetry and essays but quickly turned into where I shared Quizilla quiz results, surveys and other things that probably would have fit better on deadjournal.
The last time I checked the comments on that blog after ignoring it for years was someone asking why a blog called satanicelephant contained nothing satanic or zoological whatsoever. My response was just that a satanic elephant was the most ridiculous but wonderful creature I could think of. I had long switched over to MySpace but really only checked it enough to remember my password. My internet activity fared better on Deviantart but I stopped posting "work" there after the copyright scandal of 2007 (maybe?). A college friend convinced me to join Facebook the same year and I fell into the TMI vortex. I was only saved from the FB abyss when my aunt showed up in my comments. But those aren't really blogs.
I once published the first chapter of a phanfiction before losing interest. I mean I had the outline finished but I liked to think that I had "something called a life" and wanted to watch Inuyasha on megavideo during my downtime instead of researching 1800s Paris details and flexing my perfectionism in Word.
I enjoy lurking on Reddit. Memes are still awesome. New Grounds is still pretty cool but I miss YTMND. Not that I ever bothered to make one. I look at FB and Instagram once a month.
Sure I have a WordPress but it's "work-related" (photography) but that's boring and requires reponsability and I keep forgetting my password. I fair better with my Vimeo account because it's not really a choice.
I've been aware of Tumblr for years but have only joined up now.
Ok, now let's be honest: my habit of starting something and not finishing isn't going to change, so really I'm just here to lurk with further ease on fandom blogs and mbti memes. I'm an INTP going through some stuff at the moment (breakup and Ti-Si loop/major avoidance and procrastination) and have an embarrassing crush on Frank Frink from TMITHC: the character, not the actor.
No really: Hellboy is one of my all-time favorite movies and I forgot he was even in that. To be fair it's hard to notice anyone other than the giant red dude with horns. Selma Blair is gorgeous and stole the rest of the show. Now Rupert Evans as Frank Frink? I'm obsessed. With the character, not the actor (that would be creepy). I did however discover the Hacy ship recently and I'm so on it, late though I am to the party. I'm late to everything.
I have a less embarrassing crush/profound appreciation of Eva Green from Penny Dreadful and The Dreamers. The actor, not the characters. She's a freakin' goddess.
I like Harry Potter (I'm a Ravenclaw, what a shocker... I made a character as a teen called the Ravenclaw Slacker and drew some comics with her. She has a crush on Sirius Black but pretends not to), Supernatural, Doctor Who, NightWatch/DayWatch/TwighlightWatch, Community, His Dark Materials, True Blood, Penny Dreadful, the Charmed reboot, Lucifer, TMITHC, Phatom of The Opera, Evil Dead, Big Bang Theory (I am Sheldon), HIMYM, Good Omens, South Park, Studio Ghibli, anything by Taika Watiti, David Lynch, Kubrick, Ed Wood, the Cohen Brothers, Monty Python, Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman, Watership Down, film noir, horror movies, comix and comics, and musicals. All of the musicals.
I do art and study cinema. Pop culture is a drug. I sometimes read tarot using Mother Peace cards.
Tldr: I miss the old user-run Quizilla ... I'm a hazel tree.
