i’m gonna talk about this not for sympathy or to trauma dump on main but because i want society to get more comfortable with conversations about sexual violence. we can’t fix a problem we won’t talk about.

my rapist was my boyfriend. he was popular, talented, smart, and generally well liked. he was a gentleman and treated me so well. at school we were something of an “it” couple (listen, i went to art school, there weren’t a lot of people to begin with). he was the last person you would suspect to be a rapist.

and then he was. he didn’t threaten me or drug me, he just didn’t hear the word “no”. that’s all it takes. perfectly nice guys don’t hear the word “no”. you cannot tell someone is or will be a rapist by looking at them or talking to them or being their friend or dating them. the only way to know if someone is a rapist is to know if they’ve raped someone.

you didn’t “know the whole time”. you didn’t “get a weird vibe”. there were no signs, no clues, no foreshadowing. you didn’t know and neither did I. you are not wiser than the victims.

anyone can be a rapist, so stop acting like you can pick them out of a crowd.

the biggest reasons i hate the “all octolings in the military were hypnotized by their goggles!!!” thing is that it robs the octolings of their agency.

think about it. if all the octolings in the octarian military are hypnotized, then they have no choice but to follow octavio. they aren't even capable of doing something else. and then, callie and marie have to "save" them in order to give them even the option of leaving. they kind of have to not because of anything THEY did, but because no longer being brainwashed puts them in danger. them leaving is ENTIRELY caused by other goddamn people. THEY don't have a single goddamn choice in the matter. and that's boring.

this is why it's absolutely, truly, positively, genuinely, SO much more interesting if the octolings in the military AREN'T hypnotized. because then, them leaving is a CHOICE. sure, the inkantation may influence that choice, but they still decide, OUT OF THEIR OWN FREE WILL, to leave. they CHOOSE to defy octavio, they CHOOSE to leave everything they've ever known. they CHOOSE to think, to believe, to hope, that maybe inklings aren't all bad, that maybe they were lied to. and then they leave. BY THEMSELVES. and they have to contend with that.

i don't get it. why do the octolings have to be dragged along in their own story? why does octavio have to be a megamaniacal villain who brainwashes his own people? why don't they get to have a choice? if it's choice, then they have to make it. then, they have to deal with it.

* For the record btw a paraphilia by definition is just any sexual desire classed as "unusual" by the dsm, which can include anything from apparently getting horny about imagining yourself as a vampire (?) to being attracted to fictional characters, to being attracted to trans people. It's not an issue unless it has the capacity to cause real harm to yourself or others, at which point it becomes a paraphilic disorder
