we somewhat try to avoid each other just for the sake of not making any more messes but in doing so we fail to check behind us and so we end up backing into each other anyway😭😭😭 and that's when he's just like fuck it . so he just apologizes while loosening his tie (😵‍💫) and is like "would you like to go and grab dinner with me?" and he catches me so off guard but he doesn't take it back either and he's so like . HOT? hsdahgghadghasga he's funny and handsome at the same time it takes me a second to really realize what he's asking of me but then i agree anyway bc why the fuck not yk? aaaaand so our first date takes place at like 9pm at some random fast food place where we stuff our faces with some noodles while getting to know each other. the connection is really good btw. like there isn't a single moment where it's awkward or anything we're constantly talking and laughing and we keep on sitting there even after we're done eating too. it feels very comfortable<3333 he compliments my smile and i tease him for being a lawyer lmao telling him that he's very Fancy but he obviously doesn't take it into heart and he just offers to show me his office some day to kind of prove me wrong hehehhee we exchange numbers and we keep in touch by sending each other pics of our cats and yeah it goes veeery very smoothly from there on out!!!!!

THE TRANSFORMATION OF THE MINISTRY HAD TAKEN HER BREATH AWAY WHEN THEY'D ENTERED. The atrium had been blanketed in snow that never melted despite the warmth of the entrance room, a path carved down the middle which led the way to the room the annual Christmas party was being held in. And whomever had overseen decorations had done a splendid job.

Above them is a canopy of evergreen; red berries, pinecones, baubles, and twinkle lights nestled throughout, giving the room a warm glow that's enough to light the room but keep the mood. Hermione had been entranced from the second they'd got there, dragging @3katanas from sight to sight amidst their mingling. From the dancing ice sculptures, right through to the fountain of eggnog they're now stood before.

"Grab a glass," she says, her good mood practically beaming off her. "I know where we can find some good stuff to spike our own."

You suddenly weren’t sure what was contributing more to the heat in your cheeks: the sun pelting down on both of you, the way Rora’s thumb was delicately brushing the dirt away from your skin, or the way her nose was only an inch or so from yours. The cicadas let loose another tidal wave of their noisy song as the breeze plucked at the rusty wind chime on the back porch, reminding you that you were not, indeed, frozen in time, both of you with your knees in the garden soil for eternity.

Not that you would have minded, you thought absently. Rora still didn’t move, however, her eyes sliding languorously over every one of your features as though she wanted to pore over them at all hours. More than that, even — there was something dark coiled in her familiar fathomless green, something you could just catch. You were vaguely aware of a sensation creeping across your exposed skin; something still more... present than the usual goosebumps you got when Rora was around. Like there was something in her skull that wanted to hoard the image of your face. When you couldn’t stand it any longer, your eyes flicked from hers down to her lips - faintly parted, curious - and back. “…Aren’t you forgetting something?” Rora blinked, seeming to come back to the surface of herself. “I… no.” She searched your face anew, as if looking for something she missed before. “Why?” You felt your lips pull back at the corner even as your brow furrowed. “I… thought you were going to kiss me,” you said, unable to help the uncertain little laugh that punctuated the sentence. “I mean, you don’t have to,” you added quickly. “Obviously. I just…“ “No.” Rora’s thumb moved higher up your wrist, causing you to trail off. But she didn’t change her distance from your face, still imperiously close. “No, you’re right. I am.” “Oh. …Okay.” You waited for a moment more, then giggled softly, unable to help the instinct. She tilted her head slightly, as if considering the angle of the light in your eyes. It was another full moment before she spoke again, and you were left waiting there still, your curiosity starting to stretch into nerves. “You’ll forgive me if I linger, sweet pea,” she said, sighing even as she spoke. She reached up now to your hair, gently stroking part of it with her fingertip as though it were made of something impossibly fragile. “There was a time I never thought I’d get this close to someone as pretty as you…” Her eyes met yours again, something in them changed. Softer now. “Much less get to kiss them.” Her smile was wry, but still noticeably brittle. “Or have them ask me to.” Her tongue darted briefly out over her lower lip - was she… nervous? “So I tend towards… savorin’ it, you might say.”

I've had Rora on the brain a lot lately - there's something about her working out her own queerness as an isolated, damaged living girl, and only finally getting to be herself now that she's been dead already that's been really speaking to me, idk. she's been kind of talkative in her own way in the back of my head the past couple weeks, so we'll probably see more of her soon.

I mean, just for a start, have you taken a good look at her fantasy creatures lately? A whole bunch of them are straight-up based on malicious and dehumanizing stereotypes about actual people.

Remember the werewolves? And being a werewolf was made into a kind of metaphor for having AIDS?

And you know how AIDS was first associated with gay men? And how conservatives back in the day were claiming gay men were preying on children in order to convert them to gayness?

Remember how Fenrir Greyback preyed on children in particular? Yeah, she put that subtext in there. She was an adult in the 90's. She knew damn well what she was doing.

Remember the house elves? Remember how most of them loved to serve and needed to have a home and a master or else they just wouldn't know what to do with themselves?

Did you know that's literally what slavers in the American South said about the Black people they kept enslaved? Go look up the happy slave myth.

Do I even need to get into the goblins and the antisemitic tropes they're based on? No, folkloric goblins were not gold-hoarding bankers waiting for their chance to stab humanity in the back.

"But the characters are so good!"

Are you kidding me?

Most of her characters are pretty one-dimensional, including Harry. Her idea of making a morally complicated character is giving a tragic past to a bully. Numerous characters are little more than stereotypes. (Looking at Fleur right now.) Literally anybody, including you, can easily make dozens of characters just as good, if not better. (It doesn't exactly take a lot of character designing skill to go, "hey, actually, having a sad backstory doesn't make it okay to bully children" or "hey, maybe I should not base a character on the first stereotype that pops into my head.")

"But the rest of the worldbuilding!"

Sorry, but her worldbuilding is just as basic as her characters. Magical castles and secret passages are stock tropes. Magical people who keep their true nature secret from humanity is the premise of pretty much every White Wolf TTRPG. Most of her fantasy creatures are just common European fairy tale and folklore creatures with shitty stereotypes projected onto them.

I'm not saying "basic worldbuilding bad." I'm saying, you could do just as good, if not better, with minimal effort.

Also there's her magical bioessentialism, where only Harry's abusive blood relatives could provide him with supernatural protection from Voldemort. Rowling thus effectively declared that non-biological family isn't quite real family, and that abusive biofamily can give you some essential thing that a loving, supportive family that isn't related to you just can't.

The Hogwarts houses are one of the most insidious elements of her worldbuilding. The idea of being sorted gives you a little dopamine hit because wow now you have a li'l niche where you belong!

But the actual function of the houses and sorting system and the House Cup is teaching children to see each other as rivals, and ensure that the most toxic views of the upper class get passed on to every new batch of kids sorted into Slytherin.

Hogwarts effectively prepares children for a dystopia where magic serves to distract its citizens from how nightmarishly awful it is. Economic inequality is so bad that people like Arthur and Molly Weasley can barely afford to put their kids through school, casual sadism is just an accepted norm in everyday society, and non-humans are second class citizens. Rowling sorta acts like she thinks this is a bad thing with certain lines she gave to Dumbledore, but in the end, her special boy protagonist becomes an auror; IE, a defender of the status quo. So.

If you've never seen it, Lily Simpson's video goes into even more detail on how the worldbuilding of Harry Potter is actually incredibly fucked up, and how it betrays small-minded attitudes on Rowling's part. There's no separating the art from this artist, because Rowling's rotten values pour out of nearly every page.

Yes, there are many things in Harry Potter that evoke feelings and inspire people, but there's absolutely nothing in it that this series has a monopoly on. You can find those same experiences in much, much better media.
