Because it feels like it makes a chara particularly close to a neutral character and potentially being unfair for other charas duo that others may like idk how to explain it

Im kinda curious as to your thoughts on this, or more specifically ace and yuu's dynamic over the course of the story from their first meeting up to now. Cuz yuu feels like a person or place where ace turns to for reassurance and protection/comfort in a way, like their very existence gives him courage to push forward

d hi issgusJkaja I-I haven’t been scrolling on socials the last few weeks so I had the chance to see much fan art (other than what friends have shown me) 😭 but I’m sure it’s very tasty content!!

Yeeeah, I was waiting on the devs to finally get around to addressing Ace’s insecurities. in book 5, we had a brief mention of being being shocked Deuce got his UM before he did, then he was out of commission in book 6, and finally early in book 7 he deflected from the idea of Yuu going back to their original world. Suffice it to say, they addressed both the UM and the Yuu issues so well; it was really heart wrenching to see Ace in denial in his own dream and then struggling with his self confidence in Riddle’s dream. No more cocky attitude and brazenness, ahahah… only vulnerability 😈

Yuu is the one to calm him down when he’s panicking. The one giving him encouragement, the one holding his hand/shoulders (you get an option for this), the one talking him through this overwhelming feeling. That’s so powerful… It says a lot about their bond with their friend.

I love that Ace gets his moment. The first NRC student we met is the final one to get his unique magic—a magic he is able to take hold of, despite his doubts, thanks to Yuu’s reassurance and coaching. The first encounter was the domino that led up to this. First enemies, then friends. Through thick and thin, trials and tribulations, together until the bitter end. And when you think about it, they’re similar in their insecurities too. Worried that they’re not enough, that they’re ordinary, that they don’t contribute as much as they should, that they can’t protect the people they care about. It’s a great parallel, and that really slots in nicely with Twst’s recurring themes and imagery of characters mirroring each other.

Mmm… I think I understand what you’re getting at? Because Yuu is a self-insert type of character, you’re saying it is odd that Ace specifically has been getting a lot of screen time and bonding with Yuu compared to what the other characters get with Yuu. And that it’s giving Ace stans (and yumes) more fanservice than stans of other characters, so it may feel a little unfair? If I’m understanding you correctly 😅

I think that’s kind of hard to judge, honestly. Ace got like zero involvement in book 6 and was not that important for the latter half of book 5. One could argue all this attention in book 7 is just making up for what he didn’t have in prior books. You could also say that it makes sense for Ace to get more of the spotlight given his importance in the prologue, how “the guy that begins it all also ends it all”, and his well-established relationship with Yuu. To go even further, some might point out that other characters like Malleus get this “special treatment” too. Yuu barely gets any time to bond with the OB boys one-on-one, but they get to be Malleus’s secret buddy for most of the main story (even if they technically only physically meet around 5 times total). I don’t take issue with how Ace was handled; this was a long time coming and he deserved it. It’s not like other characters didn’t also get their moments in other parts of the game or events or what have you 🤷‍♀️

While I definitely think Yuu’s friendship is very precious to Ace, I wouldn’t go so far as to say “Yuu feels like a person or place where Ace turns to for reassurance and protection/comfort in a way, like [Yuu’s] very existence gives [Ace] courage to push forward.” I think that’s stretching it a bit. Maybe it’s somewhat true for book 7, since Ace centers his happiness around Yuu’s presence and seizes the courage to charge in with his newly acquired UM after Yuu cheers him on. However, I never got the sense that Ace thought of them as a source of comfort and courage prior to book 7. For a large part of the main story I just got the sense he was a misbehaved idiot with a heart of gold.

Ace bullies Yuu at first and then becomes a reluctant ally when their interests align (ie not getting expelled) in the prologue. Yuu grants him temporary housing in book 1 and supports him as he tries to earn his way back into the dorm and then even as he resists Riddle’s rule. Ace goes pretty far to defend his own stance, but arguably also Yuu’s honor, as I believe he rushes in to punch his dorm leader when he insults Yuu’s lack of education. He joins the investigation but doesn’t really help much in book 2. The he assists in fulfilling Azul’s deal to save Ramshackle and the anemone’d students in book 3. There’s also the infamous scene where he jokes about sleeping in the same room together. He is gone for most of book 4, but makes a long and tedious trip back (with Deuce) to address Yuu’s SOS message. Ace is a VDC/SDC participant and has that whole dilemma with Deuce getting bis UM before he does. In book 6, he is knocked out fighting Ferrymen and tearfully reunites with his friends at the end of the book. Early in 7, he is quick to dismiss the idea of Yuu going back to their world—and then this culminates in his own dream and his actions in Riddle’s, which I already discussed earlier. A lot of other small moments occur as well, showing Ace eating with Yuu, going to class with Yuu, etc.

A majority of the behaviors I recall are either Ace and Yuu casually hanging out or Ace rushing to protect them from something, be it insults or physical/magical blows. It’s not a ton of Ace overtly depending on Yuu. I don’t even think I could find any implications of him depending on Yuu in his dialogue or through more subtle cues. He certainly gets emotional when Yuu is involved, but this by itself doesn’t necessarily mean he looks to them for reassurance. Ace has always been pretty guarded, even expositing that no one at NRC would offer you a helping hand as late as Lilia’s farewell party. It’s only when we get to late book 7 that Ace starts changing his tune.

Hii!! ^w^ I adore OoT Zelink because I love doomed romance (Idk why but I headcanon that Zelda dies young 😭), and the story of Ocarina of Time enraptured me even though it was Totk that got me into the fandom. Also my fav characters are the Fierce Deity (if it wasn’t obvious ahaha) and Sheik, so that tracks >v<

And I don’t mind any ships, but what I can’t stand is when non Zelinkers invade Zelink spaces (this only really happens on Twitter and Insta from what I can see?) I see this ESPECIALLY with Malink people, and they always try and argue saying Malink is canon for some reason, and genuinely, there really and truly isn’t enough evidence to say Malink is even remotely canon. Saying that it is relies heavily on confirmation bias. And Zelink for sure is not canon, but Nintendo gave us a lot more Zelink food than anything else implied. The non-canon comic is *chef’s kiss* and in it Link outright ignores Malon because he’s so focused on Zelda. Idt Nintendo would allow the comic to be published like that if Malink was canon ahahah. But I just find the arguments really unnecessary and tiresome imo!

Sidlink people are always cool, and I can vibe with Midlink ppl bc I ship Midzelink 🥰 But Malink people are oddly determined to try and say it’s a canon ship, which is quite goofy imo ahahah 😂 Malon as a character is wonderful, although she’s rather empty and isn’t important to the narrative, so she lacks dynamism and depth. (I prefer Peatrice in terms of a romantic “rival” for Zelda, bc at least that has a bit of ground! 😆☺️) Midna and Sidon are so precious and are actual fleshed out characters, you know? But I enjoy all kinds of ship art! It’s never Malink artists that are the ones starting arguments, it’s always a random man for the most part 😂 And they’re sometimes very aggressive too- so if I had to say there was a ship I disliked, it would be Malink, probably 🤣

Alright, time for my opinion on Solarballs ships

I’d like to start by saying that no matter what fandom I join I tend to only support the official or canon ships. The reasons for that are:

1. I’m not a fan of romantic stuff as a whole, even makes me terribly uncomfortable sometimes

2. I just can’t imagine relationships in my head, so I need something to guide me like a text or better some type of imagery which is usually non-existent or poorly executed when unofficial. So the canon ships are easier for me to understand by default

3. I’m too into friendship or family dynamics, when I see characters who aren’t a couple I already imagine them in those types of settings, so the ships with them don’t make sense to me anymore

But even with all that I can say that I’m not really against most of the ships. Some of them even seem cute and a few of them I even ship myself, tho it’s rare

So today in this post I wanna state my unwanted opinion about the most popular ships in the Solarballs fandom.

Let’s start with the +- canon ones

1. Astrodude x his wife

Literally one the cutest married couples on media that I’ve ever seen. They just support each other all the time no matter what, and you can see how they care about each other. And even when so far away they still keep in touch and love each other

2. Ganymede x Europa

No matter how badly they behave in the story and how awful some of their decisions were, they still seem like they’re made for each other. They seem more like a “long-term relationship” couple to me and I like it a lot, the way they’re not as lovey-dovey and actually accept each other the way they are is very refreshing tbh. I like how Europa doesn’t try to make Ganymede change his beliefs just for the sake of her own and vice-versa, just reminding him sometimes that they’re together ahahah

3. Pluto x Charon

Alright, this one is my favourite in the whole show. They are VERY cute and I like how Charon tries to cheer up Pluto and support him when he feels awful. And even when they don’t understand each other, they stay nice and open minded usually (except when Pluto is ranting about himself and planets). They’re like a couple that grew together and it’s awesome

4. Titan x Titania

I don’t know how I feel about this. They just seem quite too different. And too awkward. Titania probably liked how confident Titan seemed and now has a crush on him in the show, but Titan just doesn’t strike me as a person ready to be in a relationship. He’s too invested in the whole system’s politics rn. I can picture him awkwardly frendzoning anyone who’s gonna confess to him. Maybe in the future this might work in a way like: “we accomplished everything we fought for and now can be together”. Also I think Titan would be too demanding for Titania to feel comfortable, she needs someone more gentle

Now moving on to most popular unofficial ships

Here besides my opinion on the ship I’ll also tell how I personally see interactions between these characters

5. Jupiter x Saturn

This actually seems very nice and cute in a way. Like a married couple maybe? At least when they bicker in the show they kinda give off that vibe. They could work as a couple. Saturn is very sensitive and protective and Jupiter needs support and seems like a patient guy, so they match well!

Personally I picture them more like old friends that rarely gather together anymore but are still close and supportive

6. Callisto x Triton

Maybe that could work? Both of them seem like adults with strong opinions on life and stuff. They might have something in common, but they are too different in my opinion still. Triton strives for freedom and lack of responsibility, while Callisto wants someone to lead her so she won’t have to be responsible. And even if some might say that Callisto changed in the show, I really don’t think so. Also I don’t think they’ll do great with long-distance relationships. For both of them it will be too much unnecessary work to maintain such relationships

I think that Triton sees Callisto as his first friend and that’s why he cares so much. It just doesn’t seem like he knows what to do and how to act. Callisto could also think of Triton as a friend, although maybe just a good acquaintance for now

7. Mars x Earth

It could work? I mean they are best friends and Mars clearly cares about Earth a lot, so he tries to not be too judgemental or put too much pressure on him. Earth also cares about Mars. I’ll just remind you how he made the whole tournament just so Mars will get back to him. So yeah, this seems like a bromance ship in a way, which means it works fine. Friends to lovers shift could happen in this case, although I don’t think they’ll be all lovey-dovey like many people portray them

I see them as best friends just as in the show

8. Earth x Venus

This doesn’t work imo. Venus is too aggressive and communicates poorly. By that I mean that Venus in the show doesn’t seem like a person with a lot of social skills or even experience. The fact that he didn’t know how to play asteroid dodgeball until the tournament tells us about how he didn’t communicate with Earth and Mars a lot. He doesn’t seem like the guy to understand romantic love. Earth on the other hand doesn’t care about Venus much and is too dominant. Even if he confessed to Venus and Venus agrees (not exactly knowing if he actually liked Earth), they would get irritated with each other as they’re both too stubborn and closed off.

I see them as acquaintances at the moment with a lot of actual friendship potential

9. Uranus x Earth

Just no. Even if you’re going to reason that by telling how it’s “canon in mythology”, it doesn’t have anything to do with the actual show. Even if they seem cute enough together, like a shy x confident dynamic and even knowing how similar their current problems are (too afraid to say something wrong/be themselves), it’s just too out of their comfort zones. Uranus is an introvert, maybe even with a sprinkle of sociophobia and he’ll feel very awkward in any relationship. He’ll say some stuff he doesn’t mean and will feel terrible about himself afterwards. Earth in those situations would probably want to push it and sometimes could embarrass Uranus even more. Also I’ll remind you that Earth and Uranus barely know each other. Long distance relationships also would be hard as Earth can’t leave the Goldilocks zone and Uranus probably wouldn’t want to go through 3 other planets’ orbits just to visit Earth.

I don’t see them interacting much.

10. Luna x Titan

This could work. Seems like a pretty serious ship with them both being very thoughtful and pragmatic. Maybe sometimes flirty, but not much. They share some of their opinions. Luna is also very, VERY patient and supportive and Titan needs that as he tries to reach his goals. However, I think right now they have other stuff to worry about. But in the future? I think it will work nicely.

I personally see them as friends

11. Mercury x Sun

Too toxic. It has the vibes of Boss x helpless employee which I’m very uncomfortable with. I don’t think that Sun could seriously love one of his planets romantically and Mercury wouldn’t want to date someone who literally hurts him all the time and demands constant attention. Just no. I don’t understand nor do I want to understand this one.

I see them only as friends. Maybe a bit one-sided with Mercury questioning this friendship

YES, YES YES YES YES THE COAT ROOM SCENE, THE COAT ROOM SHIT 🤡

(Apologies it took me so long to answer this ask, wanted to take my time with it because I fucking LOVE this episode and the Kennedy House Party scene and I have much to say about it 🤪)

Although I regard the draughts scene in the finale as the moment I ACTUALLY started shipping Townhull, I started to notice their subtext earlier in season 4 which is what eventually made me start shipping them, and the point where that subtext became SO OBVIOUS to me was THIS FUCKING EPISODE. 🤡

I could talk all about the heated glares they shoot each other in Rivington’s and the undertones you could pick up from some of their conversation and how hilarious that scene plays if you imagine they ARE in a… ehem, what do people say now, “situationship”? But the real shit is definitely the Kennedy House Party scene, which Rob litERALLY INVITED HIMSELF TO WHEN HE WANTED TO GET ABE ALONE THERE. HELP.

So yes, Abe is already nervous but when Robert walks in you can tell he’s even closer to losing his composure, and the way that whole scene is framed and they stare at each other in surprise, is, as many people have pointed out before me, framed like an actual Romeo & Juliet knock-off. Quite literally. And after all of those meaningful stares, and the sheer MANNER in which Robert looks at Abe as he walks by and then talks to Arnold instead (and it is hard to see unless you zoom in but you can just barely see a very tiny Rob in the background of that shot as Abe approaches him because HE DID NOT STOP LOOKING AT HIM), it’s implied that as they’re both putting on a mask, a performance for all the redcoats and loyalists around them as they try so hard to appear “normal” once again, Robert is basically keeping an eye on Abe the entire evening before he actually appears again after the coat room debacle but let me get into that specifically!! That scene:

So of course, as we all know, it’s actually Cicero who wrote the “cloak room” note (so tempted to make the Stranger Things joke I did on my first watch like “MEET ME. BATHROOM. STEVE.”) so we don’t get a scene of them both in a dark enclosed space sadly. (Who else was half convinced they were gonna make out in the coat closet lmaooo.) But, on your first viewing, the AUDIENCE is definitely under the impression (as is Abe) that Townsend is the one who wrote the note, and is trying to have a private word with him in the coat room, and if that doesn’t read like implications of a liaison I don’t know WHAT does.

And you’re right, I didn’t even think of that, but it is really wild that the audience was led to believe they were going to meet in a CLOSET. HELLO. (And even if it’s not a traditional coat closet because the only actual use we see it get is as a “restroom”, I would still call it one.) God I wish they had in fact ended up in there after his talk with Cicero ahahah. 🤭

[But at least we have fan-fiction for that 😌]

But anyhow, after Abraham opens the coat closet, already bickering with Robert (“do you really think this is the place—”) before he realizes it’s Cicero, the immediate moment he walks back out, Townsend is already staring at him and instantly seizing his attention as he advances on him, so much so to the point where it almost looked like they were about to bump into each other before the two of them stop themselves.

And as Townsend is acting more assertive as he so often does with Abe, you can easily interpret double-meanings from some of their ensuing dialogue (“didn’t stay in New York to sit still,” “tonight, outside the coffeehouse,” etc etc, it is all very easy to take out of context if you ask me), and I also noticed it really looks like Abraham glances down at his lips or something as they’re talking? Like his eyes go down but he doesn’t seem to be facing the floor, he’s looking higher than that…?

Just food for thought, and after some more very heated stares and their talk in the hallway, again I think they laid the subtext on THICK in this scene.

Even the way it’s shot, which is significant in many of their scenes— it’s implied they’re in a hallway where they can be overhead, and yet they look so physically close to each other, and the space looks so small and enclosed as Robert properly glares at him. I don’t think it’s subtle.

The meaningful looks & typical glaring, just that way they look at each other, the implication that they could have met in a literal closet after all, how it’s all framed, the simple fact that they’re both putting on an act until they’re alone with each other… It’s something to contemplate.

What might be perceived as an incidental stare means a lot more when viewed with the history of their relationship, and with how very much tension and chemistry I’d say is woven into all of their interactions. The undertones are THERE.

I ultimately believe that, as much as so many of their scenes are laced with double-meanings, this one is particularly special as it really caught my attention the first time I saw it, and makes me think it was no accident that these two behave the way they do together. Overdramatic as it sounds, I think there is, truly, an inherent homoeroticism to the way they’re framed and portrayed in scenes like this, and how contrasting yet endlessly similar they are. There’s something so beautiful about it. Fucken love them. I may cry.

As per usual, this is not as eloquent as my language can potentially get, but I find this scene so amusing and I was so excited to do this ask that I can’t be scholarly about this right now. 😂

I usually don’t say this, but I really appreciate anyone else interested sharing this around since I spent way more time on it than was necessary. ;D
