I'm re-reading the Discworld series for reasons, and honestly the most relatable part of reading these as an adult is how many of the protagonists start out being tired, used to their little routine and vaguely disgruntled by the interruption of the Plot. Sam Vimes wants to lie drunk in a gutter and absolutely doesn't want to be arresting dragons. Rincewind is yanked into every situation he's ever encountered, though he'd much rather be lying in a gutter too. (Minus the alcohol. Plus regretting everything he's ever done said witnessed or even heard about fourth-hand in his whole life.) Granny Weatherwax is deeply suspicious of foreign parts and that includes the next town over; Nanny has leaned into the armor of "nothing ever happens to jolly grannies who terrorize their daughters-in-law and make Saucy Jokes"

Only the young people don't seem to have picked up on this---and that's fortunate, because someone has to run around making things happen, if only so Vimes and Granny and Rincewind have a reason to get up (complaining bitterly the whole time) and put it all to rights. Without Carrot, Margrat, Eric, etc. these characters don't have that reason; they're likely to stay in the metaphorical gutter and keep wondering where it all went wrong or why anything has to change.

............well, that's not quite true. You get the sense that Vetinari knows how much certain people hate the Plot. And as the person sitting behind the metaphorical lighting board of Ankh-Morpork, he takes no small pleasure in forcing the Plot-haters specifically to stand up, and say some lines.

Columbo and the Knight (1984)

put me in the universe where Columbo ran through the 1980s and had a crossover episode with Knight Rider. I think they deserved it, and I am not just saying that because they're my two favorite Old Shows. @telebeast wrote a little fanfic blurb about it and I HAD to visualize it into a comic (which is also the longest comic I have finished thus far at five pages...), so writing credit goes to them.

you always go to support him, with him insisting he needs you there as some sort of “lucky charm” (he won’t actually admit he thinks those superstitions are bullshit), so imagine his shock when he finds out that your seat is empty on the day of one of the most important games of the season—the game that will decide who gets to compete in the german cup.

it’s ten minutes before the game starts and despite his coach’s pep talk to the team, all kaiser can focus on is your empty seat and the absolute betrayal you’ve bestowed upon him, your supposed “best friend.”

he hasn’t realized it—nor will he admit it if he ever were to come to such an epiphany—stubborn as he is, but the reason as to why he does so well in games that you’re present at is because of the fact it gives him more motivation to win and impress you rather than just solely being dependent on the faces of despair from his opponents. a unique sort of euphoria that he gets whenever he can spot you jumping up and down in your seat with his number #10 jersey on, that your praise belongs to him and him only.

so when he steps out on to the field and sees that your seat is still collecting dust, he seethes silently to himself, gritting his teeth, pissed that he even called you his best friend to begin with. because what sort of friend doesn’t show up to one of the most important games in germany’s football?!

he’s still planning to win, of course. he’s michael kaiser—he’s famous for doing so. and he plans to use all his rage that you’ve caused to do so, just in spite of you.

because he’s michael kaiser, number ten of bastard mündchen. he doesn’t need your help. he never did.

(see, what he doesn’t know is that you’re simply home sick with a cold and that you’re still dressed in his jersey, just also with a sweater and bundles of blankets on top to stay warm, but regardless, you’re still watching and cheering him on from behind the tv screen. you’ve sent him some texts and voicemails telling him so, but none have received a reply back yet and you can only imagine what this drama queen has in store for you once he wins the match.)

Daily reminder that James and Sirius were the smartest bitches at Hogwarts without even trying, to the utter dismay of all of their Professors and classmates. Like you can't convince me that literally all their classes wasn't them just messing around and producing results with concepts that were at least three years above their level.

Sirius waved his wand idly, not even thinking about it, and James’s entire uniform turned Gryffindor red and gold with a silent flicker of magic.

The class stared.

Fliywick sputtered. "Mr. Black, you—you realize nonverbal magic is meant to be taught in sixth year?"

Sirius frowned at his wand like it had personally betrayed him.

"Oh, is it? My mistake."

James just grinned. "Can you make my tie sparkle too?"

Sirius obliged.

McGonagall stalked through the classroom, voice clipped. "Human transfiguration is a complex and delicate art. It must be handled with the utmost precision and care -"

Sirius felt something prickling on his left hand and glanced down before yelping. His hand was now a lion’s paw.

McGonagall whirled. "POTTER!"

James smirked, twirling his wand. "Yes, Professor?"

Mcgonagall only huffed in annoyance. "You are not supposed to be this good."

Slughorn peered into Sirius’ cauldron, stroking his mustache with a mix of bemusement and awe.

"This is a highly advanced potion, one that even skilled potion-masters struggle to perfect," he said.

Sirius glanced at his cauldron, where his potion swirled in a perfect shade of amethyst. "Huh. Guess I got lucky."

Slughorn shook his head in pure disbelief. "I don’t suppose you’d care to elaborate on your process?"

Sirius, who absolutely had not followed the instructions and had just thrown in ingredients based on gut instinct, smiled charmingly.

"Oh, you know. Just followed my heart."
