the fact that ofmd isn’t trending on the day of season 2’s finale speaks volumes. everyone is mourning at the loss of the soaking wet chihuahua new unicorn
#our flag means death#our flag means death spoilers#ofmd spoilers#ofmd s2#spoilers#lemme say: it’s sad#it’s very sad#but it’s also bittersweet#i personally found it satisfying especially since there technically hasn’t been a renewal for season 3#‘you find the family you’re willing to die for when yours are long dead’ and he did that#he was ready to go#they were foreshadowing it all season#in the very first scene of the season stede dreams of killing him#he begs for death when his leg was shot#he literally tried to off himself at one point#i know this is the website that can’t handle permanent character death#but this was the only way for his arc to end

Okay, so in season 4 episode 8, Janai starts talking about two of those twin-tailed inferno tooth tigers and the two she is talking about have the color palets of turquios and brown (Embertail), and gold and red (Aegis) (both seen in teaser images for season 7). And Janai says that "Embertail thinks Aegis is cute, but won't admit it yet" so in conclusion, not only will Sorvus be canon in season 7, but Corvus has thought Soren is cute for three seasons, but hasn't admitted it to himself yet.
#the dragon prince#soren tdp#corvus tdp#sorvus#its all in the color palets and symbolism#insert image of guy looking wild in front of red string board here#I feel like a conspiracy theorist#I aint reading too much into it#and the writers knew what they were doing manifest#they add too much foreshadowing and little things#even in season 4#for it to not mean something#(<- 🤡?)#or perhaps (<-🕵♂️) (meaning “onto something”)#we shall see i suppose#okay byeeeeeee!!!!#lesbian symbolism never lies#also the wiki says aegis means “protection” in latin#which is Soren's character so.....#these creatures are just sorvus fursonas I guess

redditors have the slightest amount of media comprehension challenge (impossible)
the amount of people who still cannot grasp that the Stranger is Gandalf truly baffles me. they have given us every visual and narrative clue possible and nerd ass fanboys are crying in the comments that he’s definitely a Blue Wizard because the actor has not yet turned directly to the camera and said: “I, Daniel Weyman, am playing the character of Gandalf in Amazon’s The Rings of Power.”
“but it doesn’t happen that way in the books!” they sob. No one cares!! it literally does not matter!!! this is the middle earth cinematic universe for god’s sake! it’s middle earth-616! it’s different from the books just like the PJ trilogy were different from the books!! go outside!!!
And then worse than that, they whine and cry about it being a “mystery box” or a “guessing game” - brother it can’t be a mystery box because it’s not a mystery!!!!! they already told you who the character was in the first season!!! they expected you to have the two brain cells needed to figure it out from the obvious narrative clues!!!!
i know it’s my fault for being on reddit in the first place, but i am genuinely going to lose my mind!!!
#the sisyphean task of arguing in reddit comments#rings of power#the rings of power#trop season 2#trop spoilers#OPEN THE SCHOOLS#hey did you ever wonder why your english teachers made you write all those papers about symbolism and foreshadowing and narrative structure#this is why#daniel weyman#the stranger#and then someone complained that they were being too heavy handed about it#THEY HAVE TO!#also cannot begin to describe how much i hate the term mystery box#the characters are trying to figure something out!!!! that’s called a plot!!!!

Rewatching Gumball is knowing that while there is no actual real overarching plot the episodes are still so amazingly interconnected.
I love how they do foreshadowing, how they build on little moments that we see through out other episodes. It's Banana joe's mom's future paintings being a small joke in "The Shell". Rob being in the deleted place with all the forgotten things in "The Void" after we see that Gumball and Darwin have a hard time remembering him and then completely forget him once Darwin kicks him into the sewers a whole season earlier in "The Pony". He then literally still has parts of the void ingrained in his design when he comes back. It's the fact that Penny and her family being hollow shells with something inside was being played as haunting jokes for episodes before the one based entirely around it. It's the fact that characters like Sarah have always been a little fourth wall breaky and so an episode like "The Fan Fiction" is so completely in line with her character that it's unremarkable in context, hell there's an episode where she sings the ending song to end the show and avoid an awkward conversation her being able to take some control of the show feels like the natural evolution of that.
The background characters in gumball have such distinct personalities that have been pretty consistent and built upon since season 2 which is completely insane and unprecedented for an episodic 2010 children's cartoon. The show might not have had an arc but it has always been continuous.
You do really get the sense that this is a world where everyone is very hyper-aware of the rules in which they operate. The show might reset at the end of the episode but the people don't
#and I say foreshadowing because some of this like rob was definitely thought out previously give the way the showrunners speak about it#also penny has so much personality she's not just a blank slate which is so unique for a main character's side character crush#Amazing world of gumball just does not get enough flowers for me#it is so funny and is such an example of meta humour done so right#some of the concepts of these episodes are so ground breaking to me no other cartoon was doing it like them.#like come on the void the episode where they change the voice actors the joy episode. the dream episode.#the season 2 finale where they have to pay for all the damage they caused through out the season.#nobody was actually doing it like them and nobody has done it since. never mind that the animation is just so insane and genuinely impressi#This refular show and adventure time were all on at the same time what an absolute era of cartoon television.#KC watches#the amazing world of gumball#amazing world of gumball#tawog#tawog rob#gumball watterson#darwin watterson#the wattersons#penny fitzgerald#banana joe#banana barbara#the amazing world of elmore#meta#cartoon#animation#2d animation#cartoon characters#cartoon network

no major fic updates just yet guys TAKE MY WOY OC I MADE LIKE. April of last year IM PLUGGING SOME INFO ABOUT THIS GUY IN THE TAGS.
I may also redesign her soon or something. Make her more bug-like with some stuff. I can cook guys let me cook !!!
#THIS IS VAL !!!! dubbed her as a he/she er..#I have lore about this guy and his homeplanet Amore and the Lovebugs..#all that’s really important to know is that ive based the worldbuilding for Amore around svtfoe’s mewni#design wise mostly. I’ll emphasize.#in terms of the societal parts of Amore the kingdom kinda flourishes in the arts of all sorts and trade within the kingdom it goes crazay…#they were pretty closed off from the rest of the galaxy though. like their tech and stuff is pretty outdated compared to most of the other-#planets with atleast escape ships and all that fun stuff.#foreshadowing#ANYHOW lovebugs are silly guys I think of them as like weird hedonistic freaks of sorts#they have very big dionysus worshipping energy to them just to give a perspective#and of course they prioritized relationships and the different forms of love#romance actually wasn’t even the big thing that built the kingdom#it was more like a love for community and friends#which is also kinda silly because of the monarchy aspect to Amore and all that#OH ALSO these guys go absolutely crazy with fashion and makeup. gender isn’t a major thing in the kingdom in my eyes#you WILL serve cunt!! /silly#WORLDBUILDING ASIDEEE Val was the prince to the kingdom and was set to be the heir to the throne#the designs are like three different route ideas ive had for Val#the first is just a baseline design so like. pre amore‘s destruction from dominator#the second is like a good ending design of sorts to my ideal lineup for a season three for woy with val continuing to embrace the lovebugs-#history and culture even with Amore gone and a good portion of her people#and the third. is a bit hard to describe because it’s more of an au but it’s just a concept idea I had of Val teaming up with Dom#(it would be short lived like probably a few months max so dw)#and silly note i joked about the idea of val being an ex to peepers BUT I WANNA DEVELOP THAT MORE BEFORE I SHARE.#tap into that this may be cringe but i am free mindset or something slash silly TEEHEE#BUT YEAH Val’s just a silly gal in my heart and soul no matter what. ive missed her a lot i wanna work on fics with him and especially to-#develop more stuff for Amore and the Lovebugs before Dominator’s destruction of the planet#BUT YEAH i wanna Val post more. go into depth for their dynamic with the other characters and all that#I may cook some more stuff with him once I get these stargazing fics all set and whatnot SO WE’LL SEE!#also /nf but if anyone would wanna ask questions about val/amore/lovebugs ask away I’d love to answer any questions! 🥺

I do find it interesting that ATLA managed to use a very black and white narrative (stop Evil Empire) to tell several character stories with some nuance, while TDP claims it has a nuanced conflict and flattens everything to try and make up for that, ultimately leading to protagonist centred morality more than anything. And if they didn’t want me to compare the two then they should have let go of the ATLA references right away.
you're right and you should say it.
the constant and shoehorned references to ATLA do not really do this show any favors. honestly might be part of the problem (why are there 7 primals with color-coded elves? to follow ATLA's pattern of marketable separable elements. why is it an adventure story with a core crew? because ATLA was like this too. etc etc.)
but anyway. yeah. ATLA had a very simple main conflict to provide a constant source of tension throughout the show (even if they dropped the ball at the last season re: the plot), and this structure allowed for episodes that explore other aspects of the setting and characters while still making everything feel relevant and tied together by said conflict. it's not some arthouse show by any means, but it has good compelling story work into it. genuinely great show.
tdp immediately opens up with the nuance and it never really delves deeper. you'd think that opening with characters being aware of the cycle of violence stuff would be interesting and the show would explore that more, but it just... flatlines there. there's no progression or graduation or exploration of themes as the seasons go on like in ATLA. very rarely are there new questions being asked or arcs that feel sensical.
honestly the main characters having to be perfect in every situation is the biggest problem with tdp. the mains are not allowed to have shortcomings or mistaken judgements or anything to meaningfully interact in any way with the nuanced set-up. they emotionally exist entirely outside it, which ends up making them the Messiahs of Peace Who Can Do No Wrong. good for fandoms i guess, people bitched and whined about bato and the water tribe for years. but it's not very good for storytelling.
and also, they're just bad characters and the writers can't put two and two together while still asking you to take their world very seriously.
anyways i'm just rambling at this point. good observation.
#tdp#tdp critical#for the tag filterers#ezran is legitimately a fucking awful character#callum is pointless and doesn't make sense within the larger world of the show#remember that <<path to darkness>> fear in season 4? no build-up#no exploration. nothing. just signposting for a Dark Arc because all the cool kids are doing it#like unless you were stupid it was clear that both viren and callum struggled with feelings of insecurity and wanting to be great#like really. no reason except extremely shitty foreshadowing and honestly a waste of screentime. like i'm sorry#but the fart jokes were unironically more characterful. claudia is emotionally immature#never got over her childhood. and her poopoofarty humor is a legitimate way of portraying that. viren realizes this. see i can be nice.#but like. for the mains? the human rayla joke may be funnier but does rayla's prejudice against humans ever play a role in her character?#oh no she's not allowed to be bigoted. neither are her parents. they have to be Good All Along.#and like the sad thing is the characterization of claudia like this is most likely not completely intentional.#devon giehl is like oh claudia likes terry because she thinks he's special in only a way *she* can see.#and not the more obvious nuanced explanation of claudia generally believing things about elves + dragons#but having the sense to realize that this doesn't mean every single individual is evil. but no she's just IRRATIONAL. ok then.#writers shut up and not ruin something that accidentally worked challenge level: impossible#asks#ask#anon#good ask honestly.#just rambling at this point

horror 🤝 historical dramas, having the audience know right out the gate that something bad is coming and there's nothing that can be done to stop it or change it
#personal#guess who's rewatching the tudors season 2 ladies and gents!#this show was a fucking masterclass in the way it did its foreshadowing#it really does feel like waching horror at times#and i've said before but the anne downfall episode is so good at conveying dread in a way you don't really get outside of horror#but literally if you are adapting any historical event#you're able to do something a lot of other genres really can't#which is build up that hitchcockian style of suspense for almost your entire story#like for anyone following the cicero newsletter: remember when that letter came where he mentions octavian#and goes 'he is neither here nor there'#and we all instantly were able to clock that as 'oh no this is about to get all kinds of bad for you'#it's that same vibe that really only works with these two formats

Finished umbrella academy season 4. What the fuck
#there were... decent parts at the start? but it definitely felt like it should've had 10 episodes#and it didn't even really feel like the last couple tried to rush through tying up loose ends#it was just a bunch of stuff that didn't feel like it really... added anything at all#plus a couple short scenes hastily trying to explain away what's left#instead of uhh. using that time to actually tell the story..?#like a. certain relationship. i felt like it was being ship teased back in s3 but honestly WHY#why was this such a huge chunk of this season when it got reduced to SIX EPISODES#there was way too much screentime NOT dedicated to the main cast when the show didn't really do that in any other season#and the twist with who was doing all of this came out of fucking nowhere.#the justification makes sense but there was no foreshadowing and it was explained w no fanfare quietly in like 30 seconds#plus an unnecessarily long speech earlier that was just kinda hard to rewatch#i only started watching this show for the first time a few weeks ago and I'm so so sad that the final season was... this

#i just finished watching the atla live action#as an avatar fan#I thought it was a wonderful adaptation!#the original is still the best#but this live action was still great#(esp when compared to that... OTHER live action)#i only had two real complaints#1. i didn't like how Bumi's intro was handled#it would've been way better if they stuck to revealing him as Aang's friend AFTER the fight tbh#like they did in the original#they didn't take advantage of the foreshadowing#instead he was just kinda like “yep i'm your childhood friend Bumi btw you're an asshole” right off the bat#2. it was too short 😭#c'mon i binged that shit in two days#even though they were ~1hr long#8 episodes wasn't enough#bonus mini complaint: I needed more Momo and Appa#but all in all#i was very impressed with how much ground they were still able to cover in such a condensed format#the casting was A+++#the references were done very tastefully#the things they did change didn't detract from the show at all#and in some ways added to it#it made me just as emotional as the original#anyways... eagerly waiting for season 2#(it's happening... right??)#def excited to see my girl Toph#tragic clowning#avatar the last airbender#atla live action

remember being like 9 and i saw that ninjago episode that revealed zane was a robot and i was never the same
#i feel like if u know a single thing abt ninjago you probably know zane's a robot but back then that was fucking mindblowing#it was something that was foreshadowed but never directly stated and came from a season long arc of him feeling out of place#and i remember seeing the reveal and being like ''HOLY SHIT THE SIGNS WERE THERE!!!''#but it wasnt obvious bc it felt like a far cry from what the show was about yknow? weall just took for granted that they were all human#echoed voice

i'm watching game of thrones for the first time -- read the books ages ago, just never watched the tv show -- and i've just finished the red wedding and like, you always kind of hope, oh maybe it will turn out better this time but no! it never does!
#it has been a lot of fun to see all of the foreshadowing leading to it#that's probably the wrong word but seeing all the clues! and they ignore them! aaaaa#anyway one thing i will say is that these early seasons do feel quite fast paced like they might have benefited from being twelve episodes#like they're tightly written but there's that faintest feeling of rush#which could be because i'm able to watch them a lot closer together than once a week#but knowing how it ends it feels like there were warning signs early on#game of thrones#got#red wedding

im gonna be honest i think the "adrien being a sentimonster was randomly thrown in season 4 with no planning on the writers' part" theory is really funny. like the writers of this show are just so bad at their job and so stupid that they tripped and fell in season 1 episode mr pigeon and accidentally spilled "a strange relationship to feathers" all over adrien by accident. they stubbed their toe on the coffee table and accidentally set up a mystery surrounding emilie's relationship to a feathery miraculous in season 1 volpina before we even knew what its powers were. then they spilled coffee all over their favorite shirts and at the same time spilled more white feathers around adrien in season 2 episode gorizilla. while writing the same episode someone had a really nasty sneeze and got boogers all over the script that said "use the imagery of two twin rings intertwined as the opener for the film of adrien's dead mother". they forgot to look both ways before crossing the street while writing the season 2 finale and were struck by a truck labeled "the peacock miraculous gives life" and then by a second truck with the license plate "it does so using white feathers identical to the white feathers that surround adrien in his ads" at the same time. they plummeted down an open manhole and hit the ground with a loud whack that sounded like "sentimonsters like bugette are just as real as any human..... and isn't bugette so...... perfect?" in season 3. on their way to the hospital they slipped on ice that had frozen in such a way to perfectly resemble the sentence "the word 'perfect' is consistently used throughout the series and by the creator ominously to denote how characters like adrien and kagami are 'different from everyone else', ever since season 1 episode simon says". during season 3 someone on the team got food poisoning and when they threw up felix came out instead and started another whacky series of comedic errors. the answer to the mystery of "how and why did emilie die? what life did adrien's loving mother create that she was willing to die for?" was originally gonna be "idk maybe she just exploded or somehting" probably, but then there was a really painful rock in one of the writers' shoes while walking to work that put them in a mood so bad that they forgot their original plan and instead made some bullshit up that somehow ended up being something that made sense with what we knew and put all the puzzle pieces together and actually made the show even more interesting and impactful on a rewatch because it put a lot of shots that at the time seemed random into a new and logical perspective as clear foreshadowing. it's actually impressive how stupid these silly clown writers are that they put strangely specific things so consistently throughout the entire series that resembled foreshadowing while never actually having intended it a single time! like........... really.......... really impressive............... i think..............
#i am so sorry that this is a horrible wall of text#i honestly didnt think it would end up this long. this is just stuff off the top of my head lol#ml fandom salt#kind of?

Plot holes/crappy writing in TUA 4
• Five, the guy who spent 45 years in an apocalypse and went back specifically to save his siblings from the same fate, ended up betraying Diego with such lightness and unjustified hatred and almost left the whole family because he got rejected by Lila?
• Five and Lila together just because Five needed a love interest when up until a season ago they had a sibling dynamic and Lila was madly in love with Diego
• In the end they decide to sacrifice themselves to destroy the Marigold but then they all reincarnate as Marigold flowers? and there is literally half a bottle of Marigold left intact in Diego's van?
•why in the hell was Lila shooting laser from her eyes? where did that power come from?
• Luther regains his powers and gets his monkey body back even though it has NOTHING to do with his powers since he morphed into that after Reggie saved his life by injecting him with a serum in season one
• in the end, all the past villains are shown together in the correct timeline when they all should be from completely different times
• Five feels like a COMPLETELY different person, the decharacterization was unreal.
• Klaus' new powers are shown for a second and then for the rest of the season he's basically reduced to a prostitute, ruining all the anticipation of seeing his true strength that has been building up since season 2 and nullifying all of his self improvement
• why was Jennifer in a fucking squid?
• in the end how are the children alive if their parents never existed?
• Ben and Jennifer were completely USELESS. and they were supposed to be key characters of the season
• Abigail's storyline made NO sense at all, she was supposed to be one of the most important characters in the show since the foreshadowing of her presence starts in season 1 and then she is reduced to two scenes in which she basically goes "fuck you Reggie for destroying the world, now I'll destroy it too as punishment" ???
• when Five meets the other Fives in the diner he doesn't show any symptoms of Paradox Psychosis
• Ray and Sloane are cut out of the show with two lines without explaining anything
• Diego dies without saying goodbye to his children
• Jean and Gene barely have a role in the whole season
• Allison sacrificed everything and everyone for Claire and their relationship is reduced to 3 scenes?

*stumbles in*
Hi, I’m tired but gonna watch the last couple episodes of the third season of DD and I just made another Born Again vague nod. I wouldn’t call it a homage, but just like in the comic, Kingpin finds out Matt is Daredevil through Karen. In a roundabout kinda way. In the show it’s because she reacted to Fisk’s leading question, in the comic she traded the information for heroin, and the dealer sold it off to Kingpin. I know which version I prefer, even if neither were great, like. Sometimes Karen could be so head strong and idealistic in the series to her fucking detriment. Which is great! Which is good! I have a complicated relationship with Karen as a character, because she’s a really wonderful example of a truly fucking flawed character of any gender, but lord, sometimes she was a lot to take.
#i still think the choice of waiting so long to tell her back story#i read somewhere that Deborah was clued into Karen's whole deal from season one and I can see it in her performance#unfortunately with verrrrryyyyy little foreshadowing in the first couple seasons of DD and Punisher and Defenders it was#frustrating you know because there were all these little details that didn't make sense about her#and it was played like we should totally know why she's being this fucking pill#and ahhhh in retrospect it's really brilliant but also a feel bad because I didn't always like her very much#and it's stupid but I feel bad when I don't like female characters#meta

CALL OF THE SEA / PART TEN
pirate poly!141 x reader tw: NSFW, MDNI, brief mentions of death/blood, gaz being a little shit, foreshadowing idk but we gettin into it masterlist
When a group of unhinged pirates invade your small village, you're whisked away from your peaceful home and thrown on to a voyage out at sea. Forced to obtain a new role as their medic, you have no choice but to accept your fate as you join their forces and aid them in their treacherous travels.
“You need new clothes.”
You glanced down at the loose fabrics swallowing your body.
You’d grown a routine of wearing various pieces of the men’s clothing apart from Ghost, given that your own clothes weren’t much to wear at all. They were old and dirtied, practically useless against the changing seasons of the chill that began to shift in the wind.
“We’ve got to stop on the Mainland, gather a few things for travels,” Gaz continued, eyeing the lousy clothes. “Would you like to shop for somethin’ new?”
“Really?” you asked bashfully.
It would be nice to have something of your own, something that was yours. While you weren’t doused in riches and gold back in your village, you had clothing that was to your own comfort and liking.
Men’s clothing was itchier than you liked, even with finer cotton.
“‘Course,” he assured with a warm smile. “Not that it’s not a bit humorous seein’ you wear our clothes for the time bein’, but I’m gettin’ sick of washin’ double the clothes.”
You smiled back at him, feeling a comforting warm burn through you. Gaz may have had his reservations in the beginning, but he was certainly becoming the most welcoming.
At the start, you thought he was cold, just as the rest of them. He was crude with the way he spoke, voice full of venom whenever he’d spoken to you, which was rare. Now, there was an underlying comfort, as if he felt the need to watch over you.
It wasn’t unwelcome, and was rather preferred. If you were going to be willed into this life of deadly chaos by no choice but Price’s own, then having somebody watching your back was certainly something you wouldn’t refuse.
“Clothes would be nice,” you sighed. “Thank you, Gaz.”
“No need,” he dismissed with a hand. “Consider it a loan. I get you new clothes, you owe me next time.”
“Next time?” You deflated, shoulders dropping. “I have no money to return to you, Gaz. Nor anything of consistency.”
Gaz laughed lightly, a hearty laugh that you always found contagious. It was full of life, lovely even.
The brief memory of him mentioning being a prince in his previous years always seemed to make its way back into your mind when you heard it. It wasn’t loud or boisterous like Soap’s, nor quiet and gruff like Price’s. There was a something more proper, more articulated when he laughed.
“You expect clothes for free, dove?” he teased. “I may be a gentleman in practice, but I’m still a pirate. Perhaps we can come up with a negotiation.”
“I have never been good with those,” you confessed with a heavy sigh.
“Mm. Let me think, then.” Gaz’s finger tapped mindlessly at his bottom lip, eyes narrowed in false concentration. As if a light bulb popped in his head, he snapped his fingers, pointing at you. “I will gift you coins for clothes as well as a few for our agreement. Once we’re on the Mainland, you go off and find me somethin’ I’ll like. If I don’t like it, then you must owe me for the clothes.”
You gawked at him, eyebrows furrowing. Gaz only smiled at you cheekily, a glint of playfulness in his eyes.
“That sounds less like a negotiation and more of a game that I am bound to lose,” you said flatly. He snickered.
“C’mon, birdie. Don’t you like games? Everyone does.” He leaned in close as if to mock you, hunching down to your level. You could feel his warm breath fan over your nose and cheeks.
The sudden proximity made you tighten up at the abruptness, taking a step back. His eyes flickered to your feet before back up at you. Something mischievous oozed from him, and it felt like Soap was the one teasing you rather than Gaz.
Why were you so flustered? Was it due to the absence of light-hearted mockery that you’ve now forgotten what it felt like?
“Okay, okay. I will find you the most brilliant gift on the Mainland,” you bragged, attempting to come off aloof.
Gaz’s smile grew, though he didn’t step away from you. “Excellent.”
You watched as he finally moved, straightening up. He radiated a boyishness, one you didn’t see often, so you allowed him the advantage. The two of you were growing friends, or at least that’s how it felt. You didn’t want to lose that feeling.
“Don’t let her out of your sight,” Price ordered his men. He said it with such warning, as if you weren’t standing amongst them.
It made sense, though you felt like a child with a leash on. After all, the last time you joined them on the Mainland, you ended up in a heated game of hide and seek with the soldiers you so stupidly entrusted.
Ghost stood silent, eyes peering over the side of the ship and to the faint view of the bustling town sitting several hundred yards away. He seemed on edge, more than he normally was, but you could only tell so much from his stiff body language.
You followed his view, squinting. The Captain decided it was best to dock the ship on a farther pier, away from the crowd. Out of sight, out of mind. Nobody would notice them unless they went searching.
“Aye, Cap,” Soap and Gaz synchronized.
Price glanced at Ghost, who shifted his focus off of the land and to his Captain. He gave him a curt nod, and seeing that Price was satisfied, the five of you began to head off.
Ghost was in charge of you this time, much to your dismay. It was evident Price was still weary of you running off, and it seemed Ghost was his most trusted candidate for the job.
The walk towards the busy town was quiet apart from Soap and Gaz speaking quietly behind you. You tried to listen in, but it seemed Soap had a keen sixth sense because before you knew it, his hands cupped over your ears, shielding you from the chatter.
You could very faintly hear Gaz snickering, so you frowned to yourself, disappointed.
You always wondered what they all spoke about when you weren’t around. It always felt like there was this lingering whisper in the air that spoke a language you didn’t understand.
The maps, the poem, none of it made sense to you and nobody was offering answers. Even when you tried to shush it in your mind as it played on replay, it never quite left. It was always in the corner, waiting to return once things got too quiet.
Glancing at Ghost from beside you, he gave no indication of… anything, really. Even after all this time, he was still an impossible read. He stood tall as always, walked with an edge to him, and kept his eyes forward.
You’d never met somebody so confusing yet utterly frustrating at the same time. One moment, he gave you hopes of a bright future on the ship—getting along, finding solitude in one another, empathizing understanding.
Yet as quickly as those feelings would come, they’d be squashed with a mere glare. A burning fire. Something reserved.
You didn’t think he understood himself, either.
When you came to the bounds of the town, Price stopped you. He glanced up at the sky, eyes squinting at the brightness on his retinas, before looking back.
The sun blared down on you from directly above.
“Return here when the sun falls to the west. If anythin’ happens, and I mean anythin’,” he paused, meeting your eyes before shifting back to his men, “then you run back to the ship and signal the bell. Am I understood?”
You really hoped Ghost was good with directions, or at least had a compass. You weren’t sure how to read the time through the sun’s positions. It was never a necessity before when you knew that it was nighttime when the moon came out to play.
You looked back at the ship that was now in the distance. It floated mindlessly along the lapping waves, bobbing back and forth as if saying hello.
The men confirmed with Price. Just as you were about to join them as they trudged on forward, Price stopped you with an arm held out, blocking you from walking.
“You aren’t goin’ to run off on me again, are you?” he asked quietly, though there was that familiar touch of authority to his tone. It wasn’t malicious, but you knew the implications—he wanted to trust you.
“No, sir,” you assured with a shake of your head. Out of the corner of your eye, you dared to look at Ghost, who was impatiently waiting if the tapping of his fingers on his crossed arms meant anything. “I won’t do such a thing.”
The Captain kept his arm up for a moment so he could look at you. His eyes searched yours, so much so it made you flustered.
“Good.” He nodded. “Go along, then.”
He dropped his arm, letting it fall to his side. He looked as if he wanted to say something more, but he simply cleared his throat and gave you a farewell with a nod.
You watched him leave, disappearing into the swarm of shopping townsfolk. Curiosity festered you like a tick, itching into your skin, but you knew it was best to leave it be for now.
“You comin’?”
Ghost snapped you out of your spell. You quickly came back to reality, offering a quick nod before jogging to catch up to him, sticking to him like glue as you entered the town.
It was loud and overwhelming as you followed Ghost around. He made haste with purchases which ranged from stock for food to new knives that glinted tauntingly at you in the light, all of which were shoved into the bag thrown on his shoulders.
You knew people were staring. Even if they were directed towards Ghost and his eccentric appearance, it felt like they were watching you for even being associated with him.
The whispers between women about it being scandalous, the chatter between men who felt imposing threat from Ghost merely standing there.
You didn’t know why, but a part of you felt more defensive than humiliated. Your image was one mocked for the entirety of your lifespan, but Ghost had done nothing to warrant it. Not to them, anyway. To you was a different story.
None of that mattered now, though. You were growing increasingly irritated at being looked upon like a circus act.
“Ignore it,” Ghost muttered. You almost didn’t quite catch it. “I can feel you gettin’ huffy.”
You scowled, crossing your arms and turning your head. Ghost paid you no mind, continuing to browse in the small shop you were in.
“I am not huffy,” you mumbled.
Ghost paused, turning his head towards you. He stared, eyes flickering over your face—first to your furrowed eyebrows, then to your narrowed eyes, then down to your lips tugged into a frown.
He snorted quietly through his nose, returning to his browsing.
The sound made you turn your head. Dare you say it sounded amused, though it could be your ears deceiving you.
You decided to ignore it. The last thing you wanted was to bring it up and have him reserve back to permanently scowling.
Ghost straightened up from the various knives he was looking at, uninterested. He adjusted the bag on his shoulder.
“Need anythin’?” he asked, sniffing.
You perked up, hand coming to rest on the small pouch resting on your hip. It contained the coins Gsz gifted you for clothing, as well as the surprise gift he requested of you.
Nothing came to mind on what to get him. You were clueless, and really didn’t want to owe him.
“Gaz was generous enough to give me coins to buy my own clothes,” you explained, shaking the pouch. Coins within the bag clanked together.
Ghost glanced down at the pouch. “I see,” he hummed, a touch of confusion in his words. Almost as if he was surprised.
He gestured with his head to follow him. The two of you left the quaint shop, stepping back out on to the dusty road. Ghost didn’t move from the entrance, and when you looked up at him, he was already looking at you.
A silent question. He was allowing you to make the choice on where to go.
Looking around, you realized you knew close to nothing about shopping for clothes. Not of these kind, anyway. You were used to the muted, colorless fabrics that never seemed to fit quite right.
You decided on a shop that displayed a variety of different clothes and colors in the windows. Some looked too delectable for your taste, and much too expensive, while some were more simple.
Stepping inside, the sight was positively overwhelming. Colors of all kinds lined the walls. Stuffed mannequins were pinned together with dresses.
Ghost seemed severely uncomfortable. You were elated. A taste of your own self was hidden somewhere within these walls, and you were going to find it.
“Go ahead,” Ghost gruffed from beside you. He shifted on his feet, eyes averting to nowhere. “Not my thing.”
You hummed in response, leaving to browse on your own accord. If Ghost didn’t seem to mind, then you wouldn’t rush yourself.
You took your time. You went through everything you can think of—greens, blues, purples, reds. None seem to fit you. Or more so, you wouldn’t fit with them.
Neutrals were their friends. Browns, grays, anything above the stars. So, naturally, that’s what you went for. Something to fit in and not stand out. You were facing that enough as is.
Once you focused your preference, you found quite a few options and went with what felt best.
Ghost watched you with muted curiosity as you fluttered around the store with a heap of clothes in your arms. He only looked away once he was caught.
As you were about to call your search a success, a glint of gold in the corner of your eye caught your attention. A beautiful miniature telescope sat locked away in a glass case, made from dark wood and detailed with an exquisite gold design.
The sight of it instantly reeled you in.
It was the perfect gift for Gaz. You came to learn that he had a love for the moon and stars, often leaving the room late at night to ponder beneath them. You knew you wouldn’t lose your game if you got it for him.
The only issue was that the price was hefty.
You looked down at your strew of clothes, contemplating. The coins in your pouch would be enough for your clothes, but not for the telescope as well.
The telescope called out to you, like a secret siren’s song pulling you into captivity. It chose you, and you chose it back.
Ultimately, you graciously returned some of the fabrics back to their original areas, leaving them tidy and neat. You approached Ghost with nothing more than a few clothings items, enough to get you by.
You were never materialistic anyway.
Ghost stood, silently observing but feigning disinterest as you made the big purchase for your clothes, then requested the telescope. He made no comment, eyes following your every move as you emptied the contents of your pouch, the coins clanking along the counter.
The merchant was happy to sell it to you, claiming that nobody seemed interested. You were pleased to hear that, and with a quick and easy exchange, the clothes and telescope were yours, placed carefully into Ghost’s bag.
“Is that it, then?” Ghost huffed, shifting the weight of the bag on his shoulder.
You nodded, satisfied with your purchases as you set off along the old roads to return to the rest of the crew.
As you walked, your eyes ventured along the way, taking in the varying crowds. Some mothers, some fathers, some alone on their own journeys. None paid you any mind.
Until one did.
A man. Not as tall as your crew, but certainly as threatening. His entire aura would be misty black if it was visible to the naked eye. His hair was a cropped mess on his head, brown like the dirt beneath your shoes.
His skin was scarred and tainted, dark eyes piercing into you. Even from a distance, you feared you’d combust into a bloodied, explosive mess just from the sheer look he gave you.
The worst was his smile. Cocky. Arrogant. Evil.
If death were a man, this would be its vessel.
His lips were moving, though you couldn’t hear him. He was too far away. It wasn’t until the wind bristled, rising goosebumps along your skin did you hear it. His voice traveled along the breeze until it whisked to your ears, flooding through.
“I’ll be seeing you, dove.”
