Cooking like a Sailor - Admiral's Flip
A small drink fresh from the galley today. Readers of the Aubrey Maturin books will already be familiar with this one, as he sent poor Pullings to the land of dreams when he had a few too many after learning of his promotion to Master and Commander (Treason's Harbour, 31-2). We are talking about the Admiral's Flip.
Today, a flip refers to a group of cocktails made with fortified wine or brandy that contain egg yolks or whole eggs. Unlike eggnogs, however, neither milk nor cream is added. In the 18th century in North America, a flip was understood to be a slightly different group of drinks: This was always based on rum, mixed with beer or cider and drunk hot. The drink became unpopular after the American War of Independence, when rum lost popularity in the United States. The modern flip probably developed from this group of drinks. Beer or cider was omitted, egg was added instead and the sugar content was increased.
The North American flip, which played a major role in North America for over a century, was first mentioned in 1690. To make the drink, a large jug was filled mainly with strong beer. Ingredients were then added to sweeten the drink. This could be molasses or parts of a sugar loaf, but sweet fruit was also used. Around a quarter of a litre of rum was added. The mixture was neither stirred nor shaken. Instead, a small iron with a ball about the size of an onion at one end was heated in an open fire until it was red-hot. The red-hot iron, a so-called "loggerhead", which was also used to heat pitch, was then dipped into the jug - the mixture not only became hot, but also began to foam strongly. It was then divided into smaller glasses and drunk hot, as mentioned earlier.
The Admiral's Flip works slightly differently and is also drunk cold. It is not known when this type of drink first appeared. However, it seems to have emerged at the end of the 18th early 19th century and was more likely to have been drunk in the Navy.
But let's get to the recipe (Lobscouse & Spotted Dog, by Anne Chotzinoff Grossman and Lisa Grossman Thomas)
Mix 1/2 cup of chilled brandy with 2 tablespoons of sugar until the sugar has dissolved. Then pour in 1 1/2 cups of champagne and flavour with 1 whole nutmeg. Pour into ice-cold tankards and enjoy.

TOXIC_RAP.mp3
All the bros have had a go on this flow
So I thought, no, it's my turn
I'm gonna give someone a chance to strike a pose
On this beat like Jojo's
God only knows when this beat feels right
Oh, but it still goes hype when played at night
And now I could cut the tension with a knife
Bottle of absinthe on the shelf
Take a sip. Or twelve
Slip into alcoholic dove and fill the slick and shit
Let's drink till our blood levels turn toxic
Bust out the Bacardi and rum
Drink shots to the sound of a starting gun
Slam drinks back a little hardy and run
What bar should we start at for fun?
So here we are, back again
Will this guy put down his pen?
I have a phone. It's terminology
2023, we have the technology with the new LP
Us boys are all running free
Who the fuck are we meant to be?
A man who's on a legacy?
So I'll make this easy
Nice and speedy
No drinks here with antifreeze
No drinks to sneeze at
Only squeeze in my glass, please
Till I feel queasy
Shot, shot, shot, shot
Cans and bottles, that's your lot
Drink till you lost the plot. Brain rot
Drink till the fives out of ten look hot
Give her the sex, don't call me a miser
She drinks apple cider, came inside her (note: FUCKING WILD)
Back in the room making noise
For gangs of people who enjoys
Acting like tough men, one of the boys
Whilst packing heat at the treat like toys
Arrive on the scene with my team
Looking mean
stacks of green
Feeling preen
We careen to the bar
Smooth like a dream
Dressed up smarter, cash pro rata
Back to the tinnies, crack her lager
Make some bread, not stored in a larder
Spend on brands, devil wears Prada
Committing sins, corporate greed
Take lunch money, mouse to feed
Pop a lock, finally freed
Fuck the lager, grab the mead
Downing honey, busy bees
Send that bottle, what a breeze
Twenty percent proof I'm on my knees
I think I'll try another bottle of that, please
So give me the vodka, that's not what I meant
But a label says that it's forty percent
Would've drank that until the same gents
Started kissing threes whilst pitching a tent
So moving on
Brandy next
Had two shots for the flex
Already looking round for the next
Throw that money, bounce some checks
Cards maxed out, I'm resigned
So let's see what other drinks can I find
Hey there, babe, if you're inclined
Buy me a drink if you don't mind
Rap to the beat on the edge
You see I'm making a splash like Latino heat
So lie, cheat, steal, for real
Grabbing snacks for the main meal
Hidden agenda, big reveal
Cost quite dear and I don't mean veal
Take my chances on my own
Life switched on, not monochrome
We'll take one more for monotone
One last drink before crawling home
Sorry if this topic's over the line
But I like to sit down and write some time
Take some notes
Filling some blanket back with a nice little hobby of mine
After party, rinse and repeat
Wobble around as I find my feet
Party spills onto the street
Now where the hell did I leave my seat?
[Interlude]
Search continues
Bottles fizz
It's around here somewhere
Oh there it is!
Back into it while the beat still goes
Why is it silent?
God only knows!
This song keeps you on your toes
I (should?) see the rapping to the pros
I'm going to woo with flair.
Rick, get me in there
DJ Eric, Eric, death stare
Never mind I don't care
Glare at the back of my head
Wishing the beat was dead
I'm going to invite another guy
Instead of the shit Brit with wit
Looking round for street cred
So hello. Hi.
I'm the one whose lexicon is next to none
Because I'm sitting in a quiet corner
Bouncing off the walls like Yak and Warner
From episode one on TV screens
Across the West and scream dad jokes loud from the chest
The only one in the smoking section
Using a party blow that he kept inside his vest
Objectives announced the fleece
Will this nonsense ever cease?
Feeling relief on the brand new release
Making a move so I'm off now, peace
#seekL#mikeyoungVO#idk if thats a tag lol#odxny#xyx#i am genuinely obsessed with this#its embarrassing how often i listen to it#i srsly i love his voice sm#the talent is everything#its really just xyx's fault tbh#p.s. im not a drinker or a night out gal AT ALL so i didnt know like half of these drinking related terms jsdhfjsh#ALSO i wonder how long it'll take until someone make an animatic of xyx and/or od to this cause that'll be gold

rocket smells nice. (headcanon whatever)
in my head, all the rockets i write for (and the ones i don't) have a scent. if you wanna make me real happy lmk your own rocket-smells-like headcanons or give me another rocket to dream up fragrances for. i'm happy to give any rocket (canonical or not) a bouquet
headcanons & imagines masterlist | main masterlist
"canon" rockets ~
eidos-rocket ~ i'm not technically writing for this guy (yet??) but i headcanon he smells like cedar & black pepper (he stole beard oil from some spartoi douche one time but it made his fur so healthy and glossy that he hasn't stopped using it), spiced caramel rum from mantlo's, iron, engine fuel, and gunpowder. burnt everbloom 'cause you know this guy smokes (i imagine it smells gingery).
universe-killer rocket ~ i don't write for this guy yet either, but i think about him way too often. burnt metal and high-iron-content meteorites. something like menthol ~ it activates your cold receptors, like you're breathing in the breeze right off a glacier. star anise & fennel. you'll be tempted to take a deep whiff of his fur but even if he decides not to kill you, you're probably still risking a lungful of toxic vibranium laser dust.
general mcu rocket ~ some kind of evergreen and foresty smell, petrichor maybe; something metallic like iron or copper, and something burnt and smoky. in the earlier years, he always smelled like some kind of cheap alcohol; in later years, a leatherlike smell from his armored-fiber uniform. i don't think this guy reads a lot of paper-books, but he definitely smells like 'em. (i use this as a template for a lot of "my" rockets)
general comics rocket (especially ewing) ~ angargal's limited batch of course (i suspect it smells like a combo of spiced bourbon and rich dark-caramel rum, once the overpowering scent of pure fuckin' alcohol has evaporated out). black-black-black coffee. dark chocolate. amber. vetiver. that burnt, gingery everbloom again.
skottie young's rocket ~ sweet almonds (see cicatrix-rocket's marzipan smell) and banana (from some kind of cousin to nitroglycerin). whatever he's using for jet fuel these days, which doubtless has a hefty dose of benzenes (sweet-smelling and actually intoxicating ~ though since we're talking about a sentient anthropomorphic raccoon i'm gonna go ahead and say the intergalactic space-faring community has figured out how to make 'em non-carcinogenic). you will get some sort of low-grade contact high if you huff his fur like you know you want to. probably also smells like some kind of alien hops, too (maybe acanti blubber ale if he's gotten any good contraband lately, though i imagine that smells like burnt tire).
"my" rockets ~
space pilot & sweatshirt girl ✩°。⋆ rocket - campfires, strong coffee, and evergreen. amber and smoke. rich dark hot chocolate and yummy bourbon, when he's with you.
blackmail material ✩˚₊‧ ♡ rocket ~ sandalwood, oak, gunpowder. the undertones of some sort of alien citrus-fruit you've seen him eating (something between a plum and an orange), and what you think at first are mulling spices but later you realize it's just where your own Xandaran body oil has rubbed off onto his fur.
window across the galaxy *:・゚✧ rocket ~ blue spruce, fallen leaves, oakmoss, ozone (or maybe that's just electricity). iron and copper, engine fuel.
florescence❀ rocket ~ campfires, wet stone, the peppery-resinous scent of the kind of machine grease he prefers (his own concoction). a faint hit of vanilla-mint-honeysuckle from groot's flowers, and the clove-like spices from your cider.
⭑˚.⚘𖡼𖥧𖤣 windfall 𖤣𖥧𖡼⚘.˚⭑ rocket ~ juniper, blackberry, and something like leather. a sharp and smoky scent, like laser-carved wood. on some occasions, a hint of yaro-root wine (which is basically a peachy hard cider, with a dangerously subtle alcohol flavor).
cicatrix .⋆☁︎ :・꧂ rocket ~ blue spruce, burnt wood, and a strong, rich, buttery-sweet marzipan from the broken-down components of his C4-adjacent explosives. petrichor, labdanum and camphor, and faint whiffs of engine fuel.

I wanted to ask this since yesterday but i kind of forgot to do it. Thank for your hard work! And congrats for updating the game!!! I hope you don't overwork yourself too much and take as many breaks you need.
Spoilers, maybe? Since my question is related to Day 2 and mostly, directed towards you dearest creator. 😋 I loved that wholesome moment where Garret invites you to his house and prepares a mug of... HOT CIDER for you? I didn't know that a drink such as HOT cider existed... All my life I only ever consumed sparkling cider (and it's the only drink that has alcohol in it that i tolerate), it piqued my interest! I don't know anyone who has ever tried it and i wanted to ask you that, would you recommend it? To drink, I mean. 😌 OH, and it has CINNAMON??? I never, never, NEVER tried something like that in my life and thanks to Garret I want to try it. I'm asking you since most of the writing and dialogue is based on your own knowledge and experiences, is that right? I'm not from North America, im from a whole different continent so I'm not sure if it is a well-known drink!
Also this is unrelated but THANK YOU for letting me curse at Teagan... This new update is my favorite of the moment! I was in love with Rita first... Now, Garret too. POOR RITA THOUGH, she really needs some love, i kind of understand why she seems so surprised when someone REALLY and genuinely cares about her. 💜
Thank you so much for your kind words! I’m so so glad you enjoyed the Day 2 update! It was a lot of work and it’s so reassuring to know that you enjoyed it as much as you did!
That’s a really interesting and great question! Since Crimson Hydrangea is based off of my experiences in the north eastern coast of America it’s really cool to hear learn that someone from a completely different continent is interested in learning more about the area!
I’m more than happy to explain the joys of hot apple cider to you! Granted I’m no expert, but I have sipped on a few different kinds and have enjoyed all of them.
So there are a few different versions of apple cider in the north east. The cold, carbonated, and alcoholic ones that you’re familiar with is usually called Hard ciders over here.
Then there’s local apple cider that you can really only get during the fall season. They’re usually made by pressing fresh apples and making juice from them. The consistency is usually a little thicker than normal apple juice and the color is also a lot darker than normal apple juice.
They also add spices to really compliment the flavor and make it taste even better. You can drink it hot or cold depending on preference. Though hot apple cider is a perfect drink to warm you up after being out in the cold all day long.
You can also add rum into it if you wanted to add a bit of alcohol as well
Personally I would highly recommend it! It’s one of my favorite drinks to have during the fall both cold and hot. I also really like hard ciders too during the summer! So if you like the taste of apples and don’t mind slightly thicker/pulpy drinks I think you’d enjoy it!
Haha! I’m more than happy to have you yell at Teagan any time you want! After all they deserve it after everything they put you through. ;)
I am glad that you’re starting to warm up to Garret, it’ll be fun to see everyone’s reactions when day 3 comes out!
And don’t worry, Rita will eventually come around to accepting she isn’t completely alone soon. ;)

i can't remember if u drink but nog is a great mixer if u do! i usually have it with spiced rum but im sure other liquors pair nicely with it too. another #noghack is to sprinkle some nutmeg on top before u drink it
Ooh, #noghacks!
I do drink*, and I was thinking about getting something to add to it. I'm a fan of a hot toddy in the winter, so I was leaning whiskey, but I know rum is a traditional nog pairing.
*for future: mostly beer, less frequently wine or cider; I don't really do liquor or mixed drinks, generally

October 21st
pairing: Marcus Moreno x fem!reader
warnings: fluff, allusions to spice
words: 1.5k
a/n: Prompt for today is "painting a pumpkin date night" from this list by @novelbear. Ooo Marcus and reader are really getting somewhere!
Directory, previous Marcus blurb, Day 20
🎃🎃🎃
About a week after going to the apple orchard, you were over with Marcus and Missy again, this time to paint pumpkins. You had been accosted as you got out of the car after grocery shopping one day and Marcus took over taking in your groceries while Missy went over the finer details of the plan with you. Since you weren’t busy and did want to spend more time with the two of them, it was an easy yes. Especially when Marcus came out of your house, biceps extra prominent after carrying in your reusable bags, and asked if you were going to join or not.
They had asked you to come over early for pizza and you had brought a salad and garlic bread for sides, which were both greatly appreciated. Then the three of you got started, Marcus bringing out three stained aprons for you to put on so you wouldn’t dirty your clothes.
“These are our craft aprons, we have other ones for cooking,” Missy informed you seriously. Then she brightened again, “Can you tie mine?”
“Of course,” you told her, slipping yours over your head so your hands were free and tying it in a neat bow.
You were reaching behind you to tie your own apron strings when your hands bumped into Marcus’ hands that were already holding them. He leaned forward to murmur in your ear, “Got yours, sweetheart.”
Dammit if his low voice and the brush of his breath against your neck didn’t give the shivers. But then he was moving away and saying, “Alright, kid, you’ve gotta tie mine now.”
Missy made a big show of tying his, doing it too tight at first and looking over at you with a grin and mischievous giggles.
As you painted, Missy explained that while they had made their jack o’lanterns a while ago, one of her friends had shown her pictures of a purple glitter pumpkin, which had given Missy the idea for a pink and blue cotton candy glitter pumpkin, and so she had begged Marcus to get more to paint until he gave in. Then she stage-whispered to you, “He gives in super easy.”
Marcus scoffed and threw a pom pom at her, which only served to make her smile bigger and laugh harder. He rolled his eyes but the two of you shared a fond look over the tops of your own pumpkins.
You ended up staying late, helping them clean up, then watch an episode of Missy’s favorite show while you had ice cream for dessert. You would’ve left then and given them family time, but Missy wanted to show you her room. Which turned into you promising to come back soon so you could race her pink RC cars. Then you really would’ve left so she could get ready for bed and Marcus could have time to himself, but while Missy was busy brushing her teeth, he told you that he’d really love it if you were able to stay. So you said goodnight to Missy and went back to the living room to wait.
And then you felt too awkward in there alone and went to the kitchen to make sure there was nothing else you could clean up for them. There wasn’t, so you just looked at your pumpkins that were drying on some newspaper on the kitchen table. Missy’s glitter cotton candy one was super cute, you had opted for one with many eyes painted on, and Marcus had done a pretty detailed rendition of Frankenstein’s monster.
Before long, Marcus joined you in the kitchen, turning off some of the lights as he walked in, making the light more cozy.
“Want anything to drink? I was thinking something warm, it’s getting a little chilly tonight,” Marcus asked, reaching for two ceramic mugs from his cupboard.
“That sounds nice, what do you have?”
“About six kinds of herbal tea, hot chocolate, hot buttered rum (which I can also make virgin), and apple cider I can heat up,” Marcus offered.
You laughed, “How can I choose from a list like that? Whatever you want, it all sounds great, honestly.”
Marcus chose but made sure you were really okay with it and then started making your drinks, telling you to wait in the living room and how to turn on the electric fireplace if you wanted.
A little fire sounded perfect, so you headed in there and followed his directions, only putting it on low because you wanted it more for the coziness than the warmth.
Marcus joined you a couple minutes later, commenting on your seat on the floor by the fireplace instead of on the couch, “Not making it easy for my old man joints, I see.”
You laughed, “Oh please, you’re only a couple years older than me and I’d say in very good shape.”
It was hard to tell if there was a bit of a blush on Marcus’ cheeks or if it was the firelight, but he did quietly thank you for the compliment.
He had grabbed a tray so you had somewhere to put your drinks and you set yours there after taking a sip and declaring it perfect.
Conversation lapsed for a moment as you didn’t know exactly what Marcus had wanted you to stay for. You had gotten to know him a lot better last week on the drive back, but by now you were used to Missy filling in the gaps when you were together. Who was he and what did he want with you besides a father indulging his daughter’s friendliness towards a new neighbor?
You figured the best way to find out was to ask, even if it was awkward. But after yelling at him over Halloween decorations, you figured this couldn’t be more embarrassing.
“So… you wanted me to stay?” you prompted, perhaps it wasn’t as easy to be forthright as you thought.
“Yeah, I did,” Marcus said. And he was looking at you head on, but he still seemed distracted.
“Okay. Why?”
Marcus’ gaze drifted down to your lips and then back up to meet yours. You felt your body get warmer, not from the fireplace.
“I wanted to ask you on a date,” Marcus said plainly. Your eyebrows went up in surprise. He continued, “I haven’t mentioned it to Missy and didn’t want to ask you in front of her because one, her friendship with you should be separate from anything with us, and two, if she was there, she’d invite herself along. And as much as I love spending time with her and you, I’d love to spend more time with just you.”
His explanation was so thoughtful for you and Missy both that your heart ached a little in your chest that there was such a sweet man and dad right in front of you. You smiled softly, “Marcus, I’d really, really like that.”
Marcus’ relieved smile was the most endearing thing you had ever seen and he was so handsome when he smiled too that you couldn’t help yourself and leaned in to kiss him. He was caught off guard, but quickly kissed you back, his arms wrapping around you to hold you close to him. His lips were soft and plush against yours and when you teased your tongue at the center of them, he parted them willingly. However, you suddenly realized that you were on his living room floor and his daughter had only gone to bed twenty minutes ago.
You pulled back, “Sorry, I guess we shouldn’t be doing this right here, right now.”
Marcus shook his head, his eyes already dilated and looking at you with an eagerness that made your blood run hot, “No, it’s okay. The hallway has the creakiest floor in the world, we’d hear her.”
You thought back to when you were walking to see Missy’s RC car collection and had winced at a particularly loud creak right outside of her bedroom door. Seemed like good enough insurance for right now, at least. You threw caution to the wind and kissed Marcus again.
It gave you such a delicious, heady feeling. The drag of your tongue against his, his big hand cradling your jaw, how it felt to nip at his full lower lip and hear his moan. Not to mention something stiffening between you.
This time when you broke apart, you were both breathless and panting, and it was because your grinding was threatening to turn into something a whole lot riskier. You climbed off of his lap, sorry to leave him and yourself high and dry, but at least it was a short walk home to your bedroom and toys.
Trying to keep from getting pulled back into you by his desire, Marcus changed the subject. Not that you had been talking. “So, what do you want to do for our date?” “I don’t know, but I think you should get a sitter that can stay late. You know, just in case,” you said with a sheepish look. You lifted your mug to take a sip and hide your face. But it wasn’t what you were expecting, “So much for warm drinks, these are fucking ice cold.” Marcus just smiled and laughed, reaching out and entwining your free hand with his, “Don’t think I’ll have to worry about feeling cold now, sweetheart.”

Where would the Newpaper Club and Zhao fit on the list? (And Jian, don't think we've forgotten about the hot detective)
wiz goes in rum, mephisto in absinthe, alecto in beer, and astaroth in his own "vodka-based cocktails" category!
zhao is a more of a cider guy, but will occasionally have a shot of maotai - even though he hates the taste and it makes his entire face crumple like paper - and jian enjoys a fruity liqueur, but will settle for scotch as well!
as a bonus as well: prof kaz is a brandy man, prof magdalene indulges in champagne, and prof elderflower generally doesn't drink but likes being watered with anything fruit-based (that isn't fizzy) as a treat
#zhao is a very poor drinker so he tends to avoid it (cider is usually the safest choice for him)#jian also doesn't hold his alcohol too well but is unusually well-behaved when drunk#so people don't tend to notice until they try to hold an extended conversation with him#as for the newspaper club: astaroth has yet to get truly drunk off of anything while mephisto seems to get tipsy purely off of fumes#(this isn't great for him because absinthe is EXTREMELY strong)#wiz gets giggly very quickly but then holds out a good while before going a little crazy#alecto gets very cheerful and loud after two pints and then rapidly gets sleepy and conks out at five#(also anon i have to let you know that you referring to jian as 'the hot detective' delighted me immensely)#answering asks#anon asks#newspaper club#!zhaotouying#!detective jian

Wassail - A Holiday Drink to Good Health
Wassail has a long history in Europe and winter holiday celebration. It was a drink commonly made and served at celebrations and feasts. To ale, crab apples and assorted spices would be added and allowed to steep. This drink would be heated and served in a large bowl so others could fill their cup.
Every house hold made their Wassail a little different. Partly due to what was available, and partly due to personal tastes. But despite being drastically different, Wassail may be the grandparent of Eggnog. Just another case of people getting access to better ingredients and culinary knowledge.
But Wassail is still drank to this day, though it's fallen a little out of the main stream. Each person makes it their own way still, but now it's more like an apple cider. You can make your own for the season, too. The word Wassail means "To Good Health" and is what people would often say it as part of the toast; which is how the name came. So when you make your Wassail, try to imagine the people partaking having another year of good health and prosperity.
Making Wassail
I make mine in an Electric Cauldron (Slow Cooker) but you can make yours on stove stop too. This recipe focuses mainly on Apples (Longevity, Luck, Rebirth) Oranges (Solar Energy, Happiness, Health) and Cloves (Protection, Kinship, Prosperity).
Need: -1 Gallon Apple Cider -1/2 cup Orange juice -1/2 cup Brown Sugar -1 Orange -Whole Cloves -1-2 Apples, diced -1 Tbsp All spice -1 Tbsp Ginger -2 Tbsp Nutmeg -3 Cinnamon sticks -1 Apple Sliced Widthwise (Optional) -1/2 cup Spiced Rum (Optional)
Combine everything into your crock pot/slow cooker, except orange, cloves, and sliced apple. Cover and let simmer on med/low for about an hour.
After some time has passed, retrieve the whole spices. You can let them simmer for longer for more intense flavour, but be aware if they are left for too long, the whole spices can leave a bitter taste.
Slice the orange into wheels. Stick the cloves into the fruit. Have some fun and arrange the cloves to look like symbols important to you. Spirals (a symbol of life) are commonly done. But you can do your initial, your zodiac sign, a sigil you made, or just poke them in randomly.
Place the Orange wheels with cloves on top of the Wassail. If you want some additional variety, you can add some apple slices. When you slice into an apple, it naturally leaves a star shape. This star shape can add a lot of spiritual energy to your Wassail. If you are worried about seeds but still want the star, try cutting out the middle with a small star shaped cookie cutter.
Continue to let your Wassail simmer on low until hot and people are ready to drink.
Tip: You may want to consider keeping the alcohol separate and just add right before serving. This way you can leave it out for anyone who may not want it.
And feel free to experiment! Check out your cupboard and see what kinds of whole spices you've been holding onto. I honestly do it a little different each year. The warm winter spices are your best bet. All spice, Star Anise; I might try throwing in some left over pumpkin spice this year. Do what feels right and hope it tastes half way decent :P

Hello! For the Christmas ask game: 6+8 for Marigold, please?
🎄 Christmas asks! 🎄
6. Six geese a-laying: What are some of the character's favorite childhood Christmas memories? What traditions did they pass on to their children?
The Gamgees were not a wealthy family, and did not have many possessions when Marigold was growing up, but when the Gaffer brought home the Yuletide tree every year, it was a festive occasion, with mugs of hot cider passed around, festive singing and dancing, and decorating the tree with cotton wool, sprigs of holly, and handmade wooden ornaments. The Gaffer, being quite the accomplished whittler, made a unique ornament for each of his children and grandchildren, as well as the in-laws when they joined the family. Eventually, it became a tradition: when a young Gamgee got to be five years old (ostensibly an age when unique traits and preferences became known), they were presented with their special Yuletide ornament, which they would keep and place on the Yuletide tree every year. Then, if they moved away, they would take their Yuletide ornament with them, and start their own family tree and collection of ornaments.
Marigold naturally continued this tradition when she came to live with Frodo at Bag End. She brought along her own childhood Christmas ornament, a small white sheep, and Frodo received his ornament as a gift from Gaffer, a red book, while their children each got their own when they turned five -- though their ornaments came from Sam rather then the Gaffer, because the Gaffer was deceased by then.
8. Eight maids a-milking: What are some of this character's favorite Christmas recipes? Do they do any of the cooking/baking, or are they just there to eat (and hopefully help clean up afterwards)?
Marigold's favorite Yuletide recipes are many (she is a hobbit, after all), and at Bagshot Row she does a good deal of the cooking, (along with her sisters, sisters-in-law, and nieces), while at Bag End she does essentially all of it. Once she becomes the town doctor, she has less time for cooking, and Frodo steps in to manage the household, but around Yuletide, she makes it a point of pride to do most -- if not all -- of the cooking herself.
As for her favorite recipes, there is the Gamgee "Everything Salad," which comprises a salmagundi of shredded cold cuts, peas, roasted onions, carrots, potatoes, and other odds and ends: all of it minced into tiny pieces, and slathered in a sauce akin to mayonnaise, a rich and decadent dish that sticks to the ribs and allows no scrap of food to be wasted!
The Everything Salad is always the opening course, and it sets the tone for the celebration, usually topped with florets of sour cream, cleverly cut carrot rounds, and a sprinkling of parsley.
And then, for the main course, there is invariably the prize goose or turkey roasted to perfection, homemade sausages, roasted potatoes with cheese, and for dessert, the star of the show: a Christmas Pudding made of moist, delectable dough peppered with plums, nuts and candied berries, and allowed to marinate in rum such that it makes everyone who eats it a little tipsy! (There is an alcohol-free version for the little ones, of course, but every year some teen or tween will sneak a slice of the "adult" pudding, with predictable results!)

I’m prepping early for Samhain and I don’t care if it’s too hot for mulled drinks. We need more Halloween season, not less. This is my mulling spices recipe and yep, it’s going into the Hekate ritual kit. When the first cool day of October rolls in, I’m making a batch of mulled apple cider in my slow cooker, spiking it with rum, and reveling in the only decent season we have in north Texas. It makes extraordinarily good mulled red wine too, and how could you not offer some up to Hekate during your autumnal dark half of the year rituals?

Long tag game!! Thanks @nova-leaf @lilrobinbird for tagging me💖
How many tumblr accounts have you had before this one?
Just one! I made it in 2012 to look at Walking Dead and Supernatural gifs and eventually it just turned into a personal blog. I met two of my best friends there!! Unfortunately I'm locked out of it for now because I decided to be a responsible internet enjoyer and changed all my passwords and I uhh. I can't remember what I changed it to. And the email I used to sign up 12 years ago is long dead. So that blog might be gone forever. Life is a highway I'm gonna ride it all night long etc. etc.
How long have you been in fandom?
I had really intense Supernatural and MCU phases back in the day, and binged TLOK and ATLA in 2015 after the Korra finale (I watched Korra first and then atla, and I maintain that's the best way to do it😌) but I never really participated in the fandom, like I never talked to anyone or made anything. So I'm gonna say I've been in fandom since summer 2023 when I made this blog to post my tlok fic (couldn't post it on my old one. My face is/was all over it. You understand.) Everyone I've interacted with here is like. Shockingly nice. Idk why I expected to be beaten with hammers but umm it didn't happen so thank you all for that💖
Your favorite trope in fiction?
AND THERE WAS ONLY ONE BED!!!!! Also rivals coming together to fight a common enemy and then maybe coming together in a different way.....? That's good too.
Your favorite random fact?
There are vast, delicate fungal networks in the earth beneath our feet right now as we speak :) They wrap around tree roots and spread far and wide, connecting multiple trees with each other and allowing them to share water and nutrients. This is especially helpful for saplings, which often aren't able to get enough sunlight to make their own sugars. The fungal network helps ensure the survival of young trees, and in exchange it gets a share in the nutrients being passed between the trees!!!
Your favourite game or kind of game?
Saw trap.
A place you’d like to visit? (If carbon emissions, logistics and money weren’t in question)
Oh god literally anywhere. I want to get marinated in every culture and environment I think that would blow my mind in the best way. I do want to make it to Italy specifically at some point in my life because apparently I have cousins there? But then again what if they're weird and I don't actually want to meet them.....
An animal you’re irrationally afraid of?
I can't really think of any? As a kid I was terrified of big dogs, but that fear is like 99% gone now. Sometimes other people have their dogs off leash in the woods and I gotta say. I Do Not Like It when they come running up snarling barking jumping with their hair raised at me. But the vast majority of dogs are I encounter are nice, and when they aren't I just try to ignore them and keep walking lol.
What’s your favourite season?
Autumn 10000% and then winter. Then spring. Then summer. I hate being hot.
A smell that brings you nice memories?
So maybe this is weird but I really like the way horses smell? I was a farm girl growing up and always loved horses....a horse bit the top of my head once...a different horse broke my arm......still love them.
(If you’re ok talking about food. If not, delete this part) What’s your favorite food from where you were born? And what’s your favorite food from some place else?
My mom's Italian so it was all pasta all the time growing up...lasagna😭 Also chicken cacciatore but the pasta isn't the main event there. But yeah. Pasta tomato garlic basil.....I'm there babiee.
I'm also obsessed with Indian food and there's a place near me that has a vegetable korma that makes me cry.
What’s your favorite drink (if you drink alcohol, alcoholic and non-alcoholic)?
I don't drink alcohol anymore but I loooooooved rum & coke. Also hard cider.
As for regular drinks. I am 75% fruit juice by volume at all times.
Do you give your pets random table scraps?
My cat is a huge freak who turns her nose up at human food like she's literally too good for it. Sometimes I'll offer her a piece of cheese and she'll lick it, but that's it.
I don't know who has and hasn't been tagged already so if you want to do this. Do it🫵

Trying a little something different: Hades' cocktail recipe notes
