Ngl I thought the writing was fire. I know we all wanted a kiss but I’d argue we got something way better, here me out

Going from this decade long power imbalance to a relationship built on mutual trust and respect (with the last thing Nandor doing in the series is prove to Guillermo that he is seriously committing to a 50/50 work load) is a really good story arc and I think the logical next step WOULD have been romance

I thought the writers were sending “HEY we love the idea of them getting together but we don’t have enough time to show that in a way that feels satisfying (they’d probs need another season of them crime fighting and building on that trust cause they got some baggage but that’s a fanfic for another day)

And that’s okay!

If we learned anything from this show it’s that, despite patterns, the vampires genuinely do grow. I feel like the implication was “they’ll get there, we just won’t be around to see it”

The only thing I love more than cheeky fan service is realistic well written character arcs and this finale gave us BOTH (idk what the other endings were but I got the sitcom one)

Listen I’m not saying I wouldn’t have loved a big romantic kiss and a “what does this mean for us” stumble into romance from the finale. I would have LOVED a final gentle hand holding shot but I also think the Guides monologue was almost a direct message to the fans “hey guys listen Nandors gotta a lot more work to do on the romance side of his mindset and we don’t have the episodes to get there so”

I mean they basically said “no matter what, they’ll head back to each other” and if that’s not canon idk what is

Honestly this gets at my chiefest complaint/frustration/discomfort with fandom as a whole. Which is: in their rush to defend the artistic merit of fanworks I think a ton of people have really valorized transformation and remixing and reinterpretation in and of themselves, when imo those are all quite neutral actions. When done well, they can expand and build upon and subvert meaning in really powerful and thought-provoking (and fun!) ways. When done poorly, they are just as likely to flatten and oversimplify and decontextualize and completely erase meaning. The simple act of changing something does not imbue the choice to do so with creative validity. It is entirely possible for a cover song to be bad (or just boring!). To exactly the same degree that it is possible to transform a pretty shallow and straightforward work into something deeper and more nuanced and subversive, is possible to transform a work into a vastly shallower and less interesting shadow of itself. As with nearly everything in art, it's all about the execution!

But the second you voice this position (which should honestly be a pretty uncontroversial one imo), you get people shrieking at you about being gatekeep-y and pretentious and betraying the sacred fandom etiquette of Don't-Like-Don't-Read.

And like...listen. I was not raised in a barn. I am 150% capable of quietly back-buttoning out of a fanfic I think is bad or boring - which is exactly what I do when I encounter them - and I am obviously not advocating for stupid ships wars or any kind of harassment or leaving hatemail in people's AO3 inboxes. (Which some people will also accuse you of the second you say anything less than lavishly positive about fandom, in true piss-on-the-poor fashion.) Literally all I am saying is that you can't have your cake and eat it too - that if fandom and fanworks (in the broadest sense) have artistic merit then fandom and fanworks (in the broadest sense) are fair game for artistic critique. Which means, in practice, that I can go on my own blog and make a post exactly like this one - critiquing broad trends, or stating that some interpretations are bad actually, or pointing out that subverting or talking back to or reading against the grain of canon is very different from simply ignoring it, or saying "fandom's culture of collage/remix/fuck-canon-I-do-what-I-want can lend itself to to really creative and interesting art but also to a lot of really bland homogenized cut-n-paste art, not to mention some pretty troubling decontextualization." And that if you feel this rains on your personal parade, you are then free to DLDR by back-buttoning out of my blog and/or blocking me so you never have to see my hot takes again, rather than clamoring in my notes about how I should let people enjoy things.

I love that In Stars and Time gives the nonconsensual kiss a proper horrified reaction, by the way. Most media where a character can kiss someone out of no where either make it a funny thing or the "romantic" thing, but here Siffrin kisses without permission out of no where and Isabeau reacts correctly! He pushed them away! Because thats surprising, and fucked up to do to someone with no lead up and no permission! Isabeau had no context, and at the time when the kiss happened, was under the impression that Siffrin didn't like touch which can have a variety of horrible reasons for it. Not only that but... We don't know what face Siffrin was pulling and I don't think it was a nice one. Which, again, means that we don't have all the context either! This is a horrible event that has horrible consequences and I love that it does. Because it's something that is horrible and objectively one of the worst things Siffrin did to one of the others in the loops, so I'm just!!! So excited it had bad consequences!!!

Geralt hasn't been sleeping in weeks. Okay, so he's clearly nodded off a few times to stay alive and sane, but he's trying his best to never sleep again. Every time he closes his eyes, he dreams of him and Jaskier. The first dream he had was innocent enough. It was him and Jaskier eating at an inn. The next dream was them in a forest, during the sunset. Jaskier leaned on Geralt, and wrapped himself around Geralt's arm, before pointing to the sky. The next dream was when the problems started. Geralt was coming back from a hunt, he didn't dream the hunt, but he knew he had hunted. Geralt walks into their camp, and Jaskier runs to him, leaping at him with an embrace. Jaskier hugs him close, as to not drop him. Jaskier looks at him, and suddenly Geralt can pay attention to nothing but the fact Jaskier's lips are on him. They're kissing. Every dream after that is romantic, and Geralt can't handle it. Jaskier and him are eating outside - Sure, fine, whatever - But then Geralt says something and Jaskier laughs and then pulls him into a kiss. Geralt play-chasing Jaskier around their inn room before they both fall into bed, laughing. Jaskier looks lovely in his nightshirt, and Geralt can't help but want to see it ride up and expose his midriff. Jaskier singing with Geralt's head in his lap. Geralt can't remember any of the words. Despite knowing he can't write songs, thus his subconscious shouldn't be able to, he still feels like it's one of Jaskier's songs, and the fact it's lost forever pains him in a weird way. Jaskier braiding flowers into Geralt's hair. Geralt feels especially guilty after waking up from this one. Real Jaskier has stated multiple times his want to do such a thing, and Geralt always vehemently denied. Jaskier sobbing in an inn room, only to turn and embrace Geralt with joy. "Oh, Geralt! You're alright! Why are you so late!?!" Geralt has no idea what's going on, but he feels horrible. He apologizes to his bard, and kisses his temple. And then the damned dreams started getting... Even harder to deal with. A memory of Jaskier bathing in a stream, but instead of turning his head like he did at the time, Dream Geralt walks into the water and- Nope. Nope. No. Jaskier on his knees, looking up at Geralt through his lashes, as Geralt reaches for his belt- Nope, nope, nope, nope. Jaskier dressed up all pretty for him. Geralt wants to take his stockings off with his teeth- Nope, nopenopenopenopenopenope! These were highly inappropriate dreams to be having about his best friend. His best friend he's going to meet back up with tomorrow. Fuck.

my least favorite thing some people in doctor who fandom do is try and argue that, because of spin-off non-tv media released years after a character's last appearance, a particular trait is immutable canon and you're a bad person if you say otherwise. eu writers are doing just as much after-the-fact interpretation as the rest of us and the only difference is they're getting paid for it.
