Ash, at a sleepover with Johnny and Meena: Spanish is my first language. Like, the only thing I’m grateful to my bio parents for is teaching me Spanish.

Ash:  But when I got to that age where in school where we had to take a foreign language and I found out that I could take Spanish class in school... all of a sudden, “yo no habla español”.

Meena, who signed up to take ASL while being fluent: *giggling and giving Ash a thumbs up*

 Ash, pointing to Meena: Right!? I wanted to get that easy A! But my grammar was trash so, and I never understood the imperfecto, so... C+’s  all around if you know what I’m saying.

Johnny, who’s been struggling to understand Ash’s Spanish for months: Oh that makes so much more sense.

Meena: I know, right?!

Ash: I really need to teach you two slang. Anyway! But Lance used to make fun of me for this like “Ash, how do you get C+’s in Spanish if you speak Spanish?” And I’d be like “Oh. Oh no Lance. How the fuck do you fail English, huh, when you speak English? Pendejo.”

My deaf spiderwoman OC, Marisol 🕷

Miles knows ASL and even tho it's the Insomniac version of him Imma headcanon all versions of Miles know ASL because that cool asf!

Marisol communicates solely in ASL. She's Italian-American and LOVES pastels and hearts.

In deaf culture they use light to alert and get others attention so I wanted to incorporate light into her fighting style. She uses flash bombs and the main part of her suit, which is based off of the Mirror Spider's reflective back, can blind temporarily enemies. The eyes of her suit allow her to see in the intense light and are very expressive (an important part of signing).

She's not fully flushed out yet and this is only the 2nd iteration of her design so she will definitely change in the future. But for now I want to figure out what her face looks like and draw her with clothes over her suit because she does so all the time.

I do think it is obviously harder for Vee to communicate without a face, like you said, even with ASL expressions are an important part of communication-!

That being said:

I think Vee themself doesn't express many emotions because as a vessel they don't HAVE as many emotions(?) The scene where they ripped limbs and body parts from other vessels to fix up their own shows that :]

Compared to Sprite, who's also faceless but still finds ways of showing their emotions and expressing themself even without their notebook or ASL!

Vee Is a very hard-to-read person, even if they had a face they'd usually look stoic or neutral. You'd usually have a better chance of picking up on their mood from their physical tells like scratching their head when confused or barely moving if at all when sad

Ideas:

I liked the idea of Vee's highlights changing slightly depending on their mood! I'm not sure if it'd be just noticed by the viewer or by people who've been around Vee for a long time tho-

2. With their gift of determination, Vee *can* conjure a very crooked mouth or even "eyes" (even though they can smell, hear, and see just fine and don't need to eat) that resemble a certain someone ;]

I feel like they'd do that whenever they maybe want to eat something in a more ''human'' way or have been pushed emotionally too far

Then again- these are just some silly ideas that I got :3 They may change and I'd honestly love to hear other ideas/thoughts on this!!

I saw on a recent post that you are accepting headcanons in your asks. Heres mine:

I have a hc that speedsters get temporary hearing loss and/or tinnitus when they break the sound barrier. The West family even uses ASL and certains signals to show the others that they cant hear. An example would be: Wally decided to take an extra lap around the world on his way to Barry and Iris’s from school. He accidentally broke the sound barrier and now everything is muffled. He enters the West-Allen home and signs to the couple “cannot hear, ran too fast” and they both instantly start signing. Wally talks about his day while they all wait for his speedster healing to heal his eardrums. Wally starts to hear loud ringing before he can hear again.

Bonus: Barry and Wally never really told anyone about this and sometimes during mission debrief he has to lipread. Miscommunication ensues.

This hc comes from a medical condition I have. It caused me to go through “episodes” where I get really loud ringing in my ear or complete silence or both. This can happen to either ear at any time (sometimes both ears). These episodes last anywhere from 30 min to 3 days. Recently they’ve been around 2-4hrs tho. In that time I rely on lipreading and sign language. And in typical rainy-day707 fashion, I felt the need to project my life onto my favorite characters. Hence speedsters getting temporary hearing loss.

Immediately absorbing this into my own personal canon. Will be thinking about it for the next 3 hours

— i think he would start with asl (american sign language) since it’s the most widely used

He signs the phrase again, and you watch him. He’s slower this time, just a little. But still, it’s easier for you to pick up Hobie’s hand motions.

You knew how good Hobie was at sign language, and it was pretty impressive to you. He was almost self-taught, besides some guidance from the people he's known and met. That's why you trusted him to teach you.

With slower movements, you can make out some signs easier than others.

You realized what he was signing, a small tint of red crossing your face that you cover with your hand as you sigh. He chuckles, tilting your chin up to him.

Some silly lil LuciBen hcs/facts(kinda) cause I love them and y'all seem to enjoy em too 🫶 -Pt.1:Camp Cretaceous/The Beginning

(Under cut because long-def gonna make more parts with current hcs, since a lot of these ended up being about life on the islands)

-Lucien is older by just over a year (he was 15 when they got to the island)

-Lucien was absolutely tiny when they were younger, hiding behind Ben at times, even before his "Island Man" transformation.

-Ben is/was Lucien's comfort person, they just clicked on the first night at camp and from that point on they were attached at the hip.

-As Lucien uses walking sticks, he usually ended up being at the back with Ben, which they both secretly appreciated (even tho being at the back of a group while being chased by a dinosaur is,,, not fun)

-Both have asthma, and both use an inhaler, Ben lost his after the monorail incident and no matter how Island Man he became, he still had asthma, so Lucien shared his (Sometimes they refer to it as their "First kiss")

-Lucien has selective mutism, in which he will become nonverbal for periods at a time that can last anywhere from a few minutes to months, he uses ASL or writing to communicate at times like this. Due to his mental state upon joining CC, he spent the first six-sevenish weeks like this. Ben and Brooklynn were the only one who knew ASL on the island, so they did a lot of the "translations" for him and talked with him the most.

-Lucien took the monorail incident hard, to the point where he hated the other campers for a bit afterwards, specifically for not bothering to look for Ben after. He ofc understood afterwards that it would be stupid to go looking for him all things considered, but it did definitely dampen his trust towards the other campers for a bit.

-Once Ben came back, he would put Lucien on Bumpy's back most of the time, using the excuse that it was to help with his disabilities (which it was! Buuuut it was also because he liked feeling like his knight in shining armour/being close to him), because of this, Lucien also grew close with Bumpy, ofc not AS close, but pretty damn close.

-The more Lucien came out of his shell the tougher he got, turning his walking sticks into makeshift spears, Ben thought this was cool as hell. One of Ben's "core memories" from the island is the time Lucien scared away a pteranodon from him, this being one of the first times Ben really saw him stand up for anyone, and the fact that it was him really solidified his crush on the other boy.

-Speaking of core memories, another one of Ben's was from the first night after the dinosaurs got loose, before the monorail incident. At some point while running, Ben tripped, cutting up his hands and knees pretty bad, this brought all the fear of what was going on to the forefront, triggering a panic attack. He was terrified of the dirt infecting his cuts, repeatedly saying that he was "Contaminated" and such, Lucien, who knew how to treat and dress a wound, as well as deal with panic attacks, quickly took control and dealt with the wounds, signing "I've got you, you're okay." To Ben once he was done, that was when Ben first felt a "spark" about Lucien.

-Their first major fight was when Ben wanted to stay on Nublar, Lucien absolutely refused to "abandon him again" like he did after the monorail. Lucien tried telling him he was going to stay on the island with him if he didn't come with them, to which Ben told Kenji he absolutely could not do, so Kenji ended up having to drag/carry a screaming/fighting Lucien onto a boat that he really did not want to be on, that was the only time Ben heard Lucien tell him he hated him. The second Ben came back to the boat, Lucien yelled at him for that and told him to never do that again, all before holding him tight as hell despite him being soaked.

-Lucien absolutely despised Ben's carob bars/drinks but ate/drank them to make him feel better, this habit still happens as they've gotten older.

-The two are opposite when it comes to body temps, with Ben being a human heater and Lucien being constantly cold, they spent most nights cuddling because of this (literally how did they think they were subtle)

-Ben was there when Lucien got his face scar, and held his hand while Mae stitched it up, not caring that if Lucien's grip tightened anymore he'd probably break Ben's hand. He just wanted to be there for Lucien the way Lucien was there for him on that first night.

-Ben absolutely adores how good Lucien is with dinosaurs(well- the ones not out to murk them), the fact that he still cares so much about them despite all they'd done to them amazes him.

-Lucien is the same with Ben, seeing his growth as a person is honestly what gave him a lot of the strength it took to survive on the islands.

-Once Lucien's father passed, Ben's mother took in him and his little sister, she and Lucien's father were acquaintances from JW, so once their kids became best friends they ended up becoming somewhat of friends as well. Ben's mother had always wanted more kids, but was unable to have more, and even though she could foster, she was always afraid that the other children would treat Ben poorly, so when it came to taking in two children she knew got along with Ben perfectly she was very willing.

-The other Campers always knew the two would end up together (maybe aside from Darius and Kenji at first- they were somewhat clueless tbh), they honestly knew before Ben and Lucien did, since neither of the two knew the other also had a crush on them.

I wanted to know your thoughts on the cass knowing/using sign language?? I personally don’t think it would make sense given how she struggles with learning english and all its ins-and-outs and people usually subscribe to the ‘she uses sign language’ as a link to her body language reading abilities even though sign language has its own complexities and rules to follow or/and use it to explain away why she’s not talking/gives 1/2 word responses even tho finding her voice and being able to articulate things in a clear way is a big part of her/her character, sorry for rambling i just wanted to know your thoughts given you know more about her character and if you think it would make sense for her

hiya! yeah you're completely right. i think fandom played some kind of extensive game of telephone wrt cass & sign language to the point where large swathes of people are convinced that cass communicates exclusively through asl. it just doesn't...make a whole lot of sense when you look at canon and her actual journey to learning english. cass isn't mute, she can speak. there's nothing actually wrong with her vocal chords. lots of people have pointed out that assuming cass would learn sign language as an 'easier' alternative to english is kind of an ableist way of thinking. asl is a language, the same way spoken languages are language, and cass's disability would still apply. cass's language disability isn't specifically that she has trouble speaking & vocalizing, it's language processing in general- because she was raised without language of any kind. asl wouldn't be any easier for her to grasp than english. i think people are well-meaning when they headcanon cass as using sign language because of how it connects to her ability to read body language, but like you said, it's...kind of ignoring a lot of her development to do so.

I actually really like this episode. I have a lot of issues with On a Roll with how they talk about Hedda that I don’t really think Sound and the Furry have. The whole “Hedda isn’t disabled, she’s just differently abled” message is just ew to me. Idk maybe 90s disability activism was different but at least to me, the differently abled thing is mainly only really used by the non-disabled to just sorta like gloss over that the person is in fact disabled. Like guys trust me you can use the word disabled, it’s not a dirty word. I definitely think that that episode would have aged better if the message was like Yeah I have difficulty doing things at times but that doesn’t mean I can’t do anything or that I’m just a fragile little baby rather than what we had. In contrast, this episode actually feels like they did talk to the people they were portraying and how to portray them. Like especially with the whole Yeah she can lip read but even tho she’s good at it, she can’t tell everything that you’re saying by just that because I feel like a lot of hearing people hear that some deaf people can read lips and then just say that their deaf character can read lips so that they can act just like a hearing person so it’s nice to see acknowledgement of that lip reading isn’t the most reliable way to communicate to a deaf person and that sign language is the most reliable way to have a full conversation. Idk it feels like it has more thought into if that makes sense.

I also liked that Cat approached April by himself to ask for sign language lessons. Idk to me it felt nice because the Queen only wanted to learn to not feel left out while Cat more feels like he asked because he was genuinely interested. Tho this would immediately get ruined after a few lessons later where he asks if asl has curse words, April responds with yes, and then Cat asks to be taught all the ones she knows(it’s every one).

Add to that the fact that he is well versed in the darker aspects of driving and yeah. Paranoid KO.

Starscream would be a funny outlier to add to this as well. Like, dudes casually in a coma then POP he's in Unit Es base, with the other cons, and wide awake. How would flight-withdrawal affect him I wonder.

Shockwave would immediately be trying things out with his new form. Once done, he would throw himself into fixing the Squishy Plague.

Soundwave has a pet birb. African Grey Parrot maybe? It's Laserbeak. He's his usual quiet kid self. Maybe Bee teaches him sign? Human sign ofc. He totally knows CSL already.

Knockout is absolutely uneasy, he knows very well humans are fragile [Silas was a fun little test of how fragile] and so, he is indeed a bit of a nervous driver, because while he could buff out a scratch as a bot, he can't replace anything in a human body as easily. And he absolutely made sure everyone has an impeccable wardrobe, i feel sorry for whomever is paying for it though--

Shockwave surprisingly ??? Creates a bunch of cures??? For human illnesses that tend to frustrate people, and he simply shrugs when asked how he did it. Cybertronian science apparently made the cure for the common cold easy.

Soundwave is indeed now with an entire menagerie of pets, because he now has adopted 2-3 birds, 2 cats, a lizard, and somehow, a bat. In his defense, he didn't know bats weren't normal human pets, but the little one was doing no harm, being a fruit bat.

He has also kindly taken to the ASL lessons, but has also received a phone from Raf, which he uses a Text to Speech app on. Alternatively, he's resorted to using social media audios to express certain emotions.

The kids cannot stop laughing.

Megatron had...some issues adjusting, his fighting instincts indeed manifesting into what humans would call ADHD, for which he has taken to mild sparring, if only to calm his nerves.

Optimus has offered him to perhaps spend some time, and talk. After all, for them all, it has been a very overwhelming experience.

Ok so I told you most of my thoughts already lol

I was recently thinking about maybe how they first met. I think them meeting because Gordon got lost in the vents trying to help Kleiner with getting into his office would be really funny. Gordon wanted to be helpful and Kleiner mentioned how some guard named Barney would go in the vents and help so he tries and gets lost. Barney goes in the vents after and Gordon accidentally scares him and they get to Kleiners lab together. Then after this encounter they slowly become friends and the next time Kleiner loses his keys Gordon is able to get them before Barney since Barney showed him the way, and their races in the vents become a thing they do.

I still can’t decide if I prefer that they dated pre res-cas or not cause the office romance is sooo cute BUT the idea that they both had what they thought was an unrequited crush and neither being able to get over it. Barney because everyone kept insisting Gordon was coming back, hard to get over someone when everyone’s talking about them and you’re wondering what could’ve been. And Gordon because for him it’s been like 2 weeks (idk the freaking timeline) so he’s still got it bad. The idea that they both confessed their feelings and then like, didn’t start dating or didn’t talk about it properly is also just mmmm drama. Still adore all the pre res-cas stuff people come up with tho so freaking cute.

I also love the idea of Barney only knowing a tiny bit of sign language when he first meets Gordon, then taking time to learn it properly so they can talk easier. Barney still knows ASL after the combine and everything cause being able to communicate without talking is very helpful for a rebellion that doesn’t wanna be discovered. Since most of the rebellion leaders worked with Gordon they all knew at least some sign language, but Barney was the one who was the best and maybe got fluent in it? I’d imagine they’re all pretty fluent/good with it by hl2

OH I didn’t say much about post-canon ideas cause I don’t have many but basically Gordon and Barney are just fun uncles to Alyx and they hang out often. Alyx definitely overdramatically like gags or goes “ewww” when they kiss or whatever as a joke lmao but they know she’s just messing with them.

I really love Gordon being like an older brother to Alyx btw they’re friendship is sooo well done in hl2 specifically the episodes.
