AI Generated Misinformation: Republican Video Shows the Dangers of Unregulated Technology in US Elections

🤖💻 The Republican National Committee’s recent use of artificial intelligence (AI) to create political campaign advertisements has raised concerns about the potential misuse of advanced technology in US elections. With the increasing availability of AI products, experts warn that misleading information in political messaging will become even more sophisticated and faster than ever before, leading to widespread confusion among voters.

In many ways, the use of AI-generated images and messaging does not represent a departure from the imagery and rhetoric common in US campaigns. However, the technology has the potential to supercharge pre-existing campaign practices, and there are virtually no checks on the use of this technology in a campaign setting.

The issue of deepfakes, which are videos or audio that falsely depict an individual saying or doing things, is a particular concern. Federal efforts to legislate the issue have seen little progress, and the risk of bad decisions being made is high.

As the use of AI in political campaigning becomes more widespread, voters may be unable to distinguish real news from deepfake news. The risk of widespread confusion highlights the need for oversight of AI-generated content, ensuring that the technology is used in a responsible manner.

ALORA MACKINLEY A WIP of a new D&D character I’m playing. Meet Alora MacKinley, Life Cleric. And yes, she does have a rifle. This campaign is a homebrew by my DM, set in a fantasy version of the Wild West — with the excellent addition of dinosaurs. I had the pleasure of doing a brief one on one session with my DM to set up Alora’s backstory, and I can’t wait to explore her character in the campaign. Long story short, the goddess of life was killed, so Alora is tracking down the killer and seeking out a new god, all the while with her magic on the fritz. I’m excited to see what happens. And I’m very excited to play D&D in person again for the first time since July.

Personal post: have been trying my best to merge my two lives into one this summer. This photo today reminds me that my art and my love of hats have had to converge. The stains on my arms are from silver nitrate, one of the chemicals that create the images I take using the wet plate collodion process invented in 1851. My current series of tintypes and ambrotypes is for the local county’s historical society archives, and is meant to draw attention to the history of the northwestern frontier. My hat profits help pay this project, as the grant I received @theartspartnership only paid for my equipment. By August of this year, I will have paid about $2k of hat earnings to complete my collaboration with @bonanzaville So long live the hats, helping to keep history alive and for funding my dreams.
