Cecily Brown, British Contemporary Painter #PalianShow
I often avoid using the terms figuration and abstraction because I’ve always tried to have it both ways. I want the experience of looking at one of my paintings to be similar to the process of making the painting—you go from the big picture to something very intense and detailed, and then back again. Virtual event tomorrow! Come learn about women leaders in the Arts and Crafts Movement of the late 19th and early 20th century for Women's History Month thanks to the Long Branch Free Public Library! RSVP Here: https://bit.ly/artscrafts23
About this photo: Here I am in the Kent State University Special Collections Library with Clara Wolcott Driscoll's letters home to her family from New York back to Ohio in the 1880s and 1890s, the text of which is the basis for my one-woman performative lecture, BY THE LIGHT OF TIFFANY: A MEETING WITH CLARA DRISCOLL. Clara was the designer of most of Louis Comfort Tiffany's most famous stained glass lamps. Not only was she a talented artist and visionary, she was also manager of the Tiffany Glass Studios "Tiffany Girls". I'll be talking a lot about Clara and other important female leader's in tomorrow's lecture! Join us!
If you're a library or institution looking to book BY THE LIGHT OF TIFFANY, check out this link and inquire about availability, rates and scheduling! Cheers!

79 Mt. Pleasant. A mixed media ode to a stately old Victorian home in Gloucester, MA.. I had the pleasure of visiting close friends who lived in the upper story. From her high perch, we could see Gloucester’s inner harbor, and watch fireworks on Labor Day. I love old historic homes with their walled back-stories. I took artistic liberties with the representation, however, it’s a close resemblance. #mixedmedia on gesso board: 11 x 14” The background is a sanded stilllife painting. As an old landscape designer, I am proud of the landscape design along the front foundation! #victorianarchitecture #collageart #collagepainting #mixedmediacollage #fabriccollage #abstractrealism #victorianhouse #gloucester #pattern #africanfabric #whimsicalart #scissorsandglue #drawingwithscissors #cutandpastecollage #womencreatives #womensart #womenartists #womeninthearts #morriscountyartists #njartist #njarts https://www.instagram.com/p/CodmlnhMsdn/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

(1) Cecily Brown, Service de Luxe, 1999; Oil on linen; Rubell Family Collection, Miami
Cecily Brown (born 1969) is a British painter. Brown lives and works in New York. Brown left London to sign on to the Gagosian Gallery in New York City. She became known to the art world in the late 1990s through an exhibition of abstracted paintings of rabbits. The rabbits in the works are frolicking in bacchanalian landscapes. In 1995, the art world took notice of her work when she displayed Four Letter Heaven at the Telluride Film Festival; it was shown in the United States as well as Europe. The films consist of sexual and pornographic themes, which she explores in the majority of her work. Brown maintained a studio in the Meatpacking District of Manhattan, then in 2011, she worked from a studio at a former office near Union Square. Via Wikipedia

These whimsical ghosts and witches are far from scary👻☿🤍 Easily one of my favorite artists today, Robin Francesca Williams is interested in flawed, malicious, menacing, and wild female characters. “I want it to feel as though these women are getting the last laugh,” the artist explains about the toothy grins in her atmospheric portraits. She always renders her figures with a twist — a pregnant ghost, a kind troll hanging upside-down, or a dark angel as the embodiment of outer space. “None of my witches have pointy hats,” she laughs. “Sometimes I think about that test they did during the Salem witch trials — how they would throw a woman into the water. If she sank, then she wasn’t a witch, but she drowned. And if she floated and lived, then she was seen as a witch, and they would burn her. But I always thought if she was a real witch, she would constantly be a few steps ahead of them. She’d dive right in. She would just turn into water. Or turn into stone, sink to the bottom and walk out.” #robinfwilliams #brooklyn #artist #painter #wildwomen #art #femaleartists #womeninthearts #sunday #artspotlight #arttherapy #ppow #contemporaryart #fall #october #ghosts #nyc #sundayscaries #halloween #vibes (at New York, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CVJAvzWpfCA/?utm_medium=tumblr

NOTE FROM EDITOR // Read an excerpt from the December issue Letter from the Editor on the Beautiful Bizarre Magazine website today. Danijela Krha Purssey discusses why she chose @janabrike’s moving painting for the cover of this issue. How she feels it speaks to the beauty, strength and resilience of the feminine – which is particularly important during these times of escalating oppression and violence against women and female identifying people around the world. She writes: “As a 47 year old woman, I am devastated to see our hard won rights being stripped away. It seems the fight is not over, so we continue, even at the risk of their own lives - we can never not be vigilant, we can never stop fighting for our basic human rights - the right to bodily autonomy, to live and love as we choose, the right to education, equal rights in the workplace and in government, and the freedom to pursue the life we choose for ourselves. We stand, and we fight with all of our sisters around the world!” Read Danijela’s full blog today on www.beautifulbizarre.net {link in our profile].
