My Hair-do, My Choice, My Voice Many years ago I made a conscious decision to maintain my hair in a natural state. I was doing 2nd year at varsity when one day I woke up and decided natural short hair is the way to go for me. I cut my hair to brush cut level. I married 2 years later with the same hair cut. End of that year I twisted my hair - and that turned into 16 years of dreadlock. In 2014 when I transitioned to another chapter of my life and I removed the dreadlocks and went straight back to brush cut. In the past 2 years I gradually became creative with my hair and used it to express myself and what I stand for. I chose to go to eccentric..Last year I met a hair dresser who was creative and bold enough to help me express my self through my hair. I believe in a more open approach of allowing people to fully express themselves, and I do exactly that. I get noticed, and sometimes criticized for this: especially how I dress and my eccentric hairstyles, but I feel expressing myself is a form of freedom that I can’t trade for anything. I have a free-spirited and open-minded outlook on life; authenticity and freedom to express myself are critical to my personality. So that is fully reflected in how I show up everyday. I also use my hair style to transcend beyond cultural and societal beliefs surrounding age and women. Especially in this era where you can still hear a woman saying to another woman, “a married women don’t dress like this”, “you are too old to do this”: the list goes on and on..😂😂😂😂😂According to who? Yesterday’s hair style is one of those that’s going to get people turning heads, some inspired, some gossiping and some judging. But hey, who cares? I love what I see on the mirror, and I appreciate my hair dresser’s creativity and dedication to his work. Together we are shifting mindsets, transcending limiting beliefs and shattering the norm.
