Hi, I'm new to the fandom and unsure who to ask my questions. I recently joined Tumblr and came across your posts while browsing the Hannibal meta tag. I have a few questions: What are Hannibal's feelings towards Bedelia and Alana? I remember Mads once said that Hannibal is in love with everyone on the show to some extent, so what exactly does love mean to him? Also, I'm having trouble understanding the line by Will: "You will only do that if I rejected you" (sorry, I paraphrased). I apologize if these are too many questions. Thanks in advance!

Hi anon! I am in a yapping mood so here we go.

1. What are Hannibal's feelings towards Bedelia and Alana?

They are absolutely women that he appreciates and respects to some extent. Hannibal does not engage with people he doesn't respect. Bedelia is his colleague and...friend? Depends who you ask cause Hannibal did say that he considered her his friend. He doesn't love her, but she matches his freak to some extent. She is a beautiful woman and she is intelligent and most importantly, she probably knows him better than anyone (up until the point he meets Will at least).

He was also very genuine towards Alana. He did use her as an alibi but I stand my ground when I say that he offered her to run away genuinely because he cared about her. She is also intelligent and beautiful, what's not to like about her? (i won't start ranting about Alana now, I have many thoughts ahhhhh). Tbh his feelings towards Bedelia are deeper. Alana did not see him for who he was. She didn't know him intimately enough. He has never wanted to eat her. Hannibal wants to eat people if 1) they are rude and 2) they mean the world to him (because how else to express your adoration). Bedelia did end up for dinner in the end. What he had with Alana was not that deep but it was enjoyable for sure. Alana is more submissive than Bedelia.

So I guess to sum up, both Bedelia and Alana were very convenient both as partners and as pawns for the bigger picture. But his feelings toward them are nothing compared to what he feels for Will.

2. What does love mean to Hannibal?

My take on what Mads said is that Hannibal is an individual who is genuinely in love with life. With every aspect. Life gets complicated? That's entertaining to him. Will did something unpredictable? Entertaining too. Rude people or people he loves are having dinner with him? Wonderful. Murder? Mesmerizing. He loves suits, he composes, he draws, he cooks, he is so full of life all the time. He is a little bit in love with everyone because he finds everyone a source of entertainment and that's really important to him.

Will actually making him suffer is however something he did not find so entertaining. Even if he did find some beauty in all that pain, I am sure he wasn't very entertained. It was a rare occasion where he was really in pain. He is not the same as in the first two seasons. He is more reckless, more impulsive. His little happy narrative was shattered because of a situation where he had no control over. Part of his life satisfaction and entertainment are explained by his need to control how all the subplots develop.

3. What did Will mean when he said "you'd only do that if I rejected you"?

Honestly this is one that I struggled with for a long time and I guess you can interpret it in many nuances. It's meant to be interpretable.

You can either see it as a) "I manipulated you to surrender and you fell for it. I knew which buttons to push. You can't handle rejection. You did exactly what I expected you to do" or b) (my favorite) "I had to say all those things because it was the only way to make you surrender. I knew that you wanted me to know where to find you. While what I said back then does not reflect my true feelings, I had to make you surrender."

Hmm so it turns out many people consider Ava a bad protagonist and find her annoying??? And that the show is slow??? And that it endorses disability erasure???

I hardly ever fall in love with main leads especially 'the chosen one' types and yet Ava was so easy to get behind and even relatable and I love her so much. And god I wish the show was even slower and it had more episodes like I wanted to see the dynamics between the sisters in depth, Ava and Bea's relationship progressing, little lost moments, their quiet times, their training sessions, them joking around and being normal idk. It still went by too fast?

And I might be wrong here but to me it wasn't disability erasure. Ava's disability is very much a part of her throughout. It's why she spends half the season running away because she hasn't lived yet. It's why she can't give up the halo either. It's why she can't drain the halo too much or can't fight as good as other warrior nuns (minus not being trained yet of course). It's her deepest fear. And it is so fundamental to her and Bea's relationship too like Bea touching her after that fight with Crimson, Bea reassuring her, Bea understanding her fears and hesitance....her disability is a very much constant presence throughout the narrative even though under the surface and ahhhhh I want to scream so bad rn.

I'm straight up not having a good day today and then finding out about these shitty opinions about this beloved sunshine of a character—

You dont understand how happy that just made me, I literally giggled and jumped up and down like a little girl.

Ok so it's this show called SKAM, or Shame in norwegian (and I'm deep in it rn). So it's basically this Norwegian teen drama but there's a ton of remakes around the world (so far I've seen Skam France and WTFock which is Skam Belgium, but there's a ton, like Skam Italy and Skam Austin). But the cool thing is when it aired it was in real time and random, so basically if there was a clip of an episode that took place at 5:30 on Monday, it would air at 5:30 on Monday and then at the end of the week they would release the whole episode. But ALSO, they would randomly release texts between the characters AND all the characters had Instagram accounts run by the show that would post randomly. And so basically each season follows a different character and the OG only had 4 seasons but some of the remakes have many many more, and the remakes have to follow the same characters and general storyline of the first four seasons, but then they can do whatever they want and it's really cool.

So basically everyone's favorite season (and the reason I watched) is season 3 because it's about these guys Even and Isak who fall in love (and we love queer romance) and it's actually soooo good. Basically Isak is gay but super in denial and has all this internalized homophobia that goes out the fucking window when he meets Even, a raging pansexual with enough charisma to make a lesbian fall for him istg (ok maybe not a lesbian but at least a straight man I'm sure). But, mild spoiler, Even has bipolar disorder and has this intense manic episode around Isak which fucks everything up and his ex is like super toxic, but then they get over it and have some of the cutest scenes I've ever seen in TV history.

I've really onyl watched season 3 of Skam France and WTFock, and just clips from the other ones, but from what I can tell, Skam France is very similar to the OG, and WTFock is a little darker (like at one point they get beat up on the street by homophobes). But I really like the remakes because the characters aren't exactly the same even though the story is. So like Robbe (Belgian Isak) is super adorable and little tiny baby and like Isak is too but not in the same way. And like Eliott (French Even) has more of a temper and he's a little more "cool guy" and yeah idk.

I also love love love season 5 of Skam France because it's about Arthur who is the love of my life (dear lord he's so hot) and he goes deaf and I think it's a really great story. I also really like television that focuses on a sense (or lack thereof) especailly hearing because you can do some really cool stuff with it. I think the show did some things about it really excellently and some things I would've done differently just to evoke a different or stronger emotional reaction but I still think it was really cool.

Idk I just love it sm it gives me so much dopamine and just like. joy. ahhhhh thanks for letting me rant even if you don't read it I love talking about Skam and my friends are probably so happy I'm talking about it here and not to them anymore haha.

911: Lone Star Season 5 Countdown - Beginnings

(1) Which 911 Lone Star season premiere is your favorite? Well, since it was the only premiere I watched live, I guess I'm going to have to say Season 4 😅. I would not call it my favorite, mostly because I hated having to wait those first few weeks to complete that Tarlos story arc and get the resolution! But I had just joined Tumblr again with my new tarlos account, so even though I wasn't active like I am now, I did enjoy seeing others speculate and talk about the episodes, and make gifs and new fics based off of things! People's engagement here is what I'm really looking forward to with season 5!

(2) Which character do you think had the best introduction or first scene in the show? I will say my favorite character introduction was TK's! His first lines were, "I'm going to ask Alex to marry me" and them using a gender neutral name was smart because then later when I realized he was talking about a man, I was like, "Ahhhhh, he's a gay character on a Fox show and starring side by side with Rob Lowe!" I am so into this and in love with him already!

(3) What is your favorite moment of 1x01? Ooooo, but there are so many to choose from! TK's overdose and Owen finding him, them doing the interviews with Paul, Marjan and Mateo! Making us think Judd was going to be a stereotypical red neck and he turns out to be this sensitive, giant teddy bear who loves and misses his family! My favorite though is probably the Honky Tonk scene and everyone coming together and of course Carlos sidling up to TK and me realizing, "Oh my, this hot man is hitting on him!" I am so far gone on them already!! And I miraculously did not have anything from season 1 to 3, spoiled for me, so I had no idea just what their relationship would become 🥹

(4) When did you first start watching Lone Star and how did you find out about it? I started watching Lone Star in October of 2022. I remember because that's also around when I started my current job 😆 I remember specifically seeing FB clips of the 1x02 racist lady scene and also the 1x03 shielding Marjan when she loses her hijab in the silo scene. Hearing TK's "I am a homosexual" and Paul's "I am trans though", and then seeing a Muslim woman, I was so unbelievably interested in this diverse cast of characters! Oh and I had the Hulu trial at the time and had just finished bingeing Modern Family and I saw Lone Star was on there, so I decided to start that while I still had it. Needless to say I started paying for Hulu monthly because of LS 🤣

(5) What is one wish you have for the season 5 premiere? Hmm, many, many wishes. But hopefully a simple, realistic one is I need to see at least one instance of Tarlos being in love and happily married! Just give me one happy thing between the two of them, and then I will gladly take the weeks of angst, I just need something to hold me over until we get whatever amazing resolution they have planned for us, as is tradition!

Hope im not bothering you and I dont know if this had been talked about before on your blog but I was really really curious about your opinion on something. I know we have to take a grain of salt when it comes to actors interview cause they don't write the show but what are your thoughts on Ryan using neutral gender pronouns when talking about Eddie's possible futur relationships? (Using partner and themselves instead of girlfriend or herself when he has been until the marisol break up very much explicit with using lots of femal pronouns concerning Eddie's love interest and relationships)

Like I said I know Ryan most likely isn't aware of much for season 8 but its very likely that some stuff must have been talked about and I dont want to be that buddie shipper but to me it's screams that it has been talked about, and I'm not saying it has been confirmed among themselves but with him using gender neutral it screams so loud that at least buddie has been talked about. I haven’t finished the series yet (I keep having to tap out because the writers keep referring back to episodes that they think they’ve written rather episodes that I actually watched), but I think the big disconnect between their writers and the audience have with regard to Steve is that the show *insists* on treating Steve’s character development as if it’s a “Redemption Arc”, when it is in fact a fairly standard coming-of-age story.

He starts season one coasting through an almost cookie-cutter existence, moulded by the people that he hangs out with. By season four, he’s the lone jock in a group of nerds and geeks of all stripes (Lucas is getting in there though) and has found his soulmate in a weird theatre kid (whose love life he’s arguably more invested in than his own). He has his own tastes and interests, but he’s open to those of his friends as well. He’s the unofficial “adult” of the group and has a leadership position, not because an adult has left him in charge, but because again and again he chooses to take responsibility for The Party’s safety.

[Side note - the way Steve chooses over and over to take responsibility, above and beyond what was asked of him, leading to him being more comfortable in his own skin and sure of who he is VS Jonathan having responsibility thrust upon him at such a formative age that he starts to experience an identity crisis in season four as they’re stripped away from him.

Just. Why didn’t these two have more of a relationship onscreen? Why does this show do so *little* to explore how Jonathan feels about his parentification? Or the ways in which this has hurt him over the years? W H Y ?]

As you’ve pointed out elsewhere(?), the worst of Steve’s actions in season one are the result of him lashing out in anger. But he’s shown to regret these actions, and takes ownership and responsibility of them in a way that feels genuine. Jon and Nancy aren’t there to see him help clean up the graffiti; he didn’t know that Nancy was there when he went to apologise to Jonathan; as far as we know Jonathan still doesn’t know that Steve is the one who replaced his camera.

They didn’t write a stock Stephen King bully - they wrote a male, messier version of Cher Horowitz.

Steve's just a guy who was sort of a shitty teenager but then made the conscious choice to Do Better. He just wanted to apologize! Make things right! and that seemed to lead into making sure his town isn't infested by monsters and that a group of annoying thirteen year olds don't die also doing that. And yet they try to tell us he was a giant mean bully.

honestly I'm going to put the lack of character interaction and development (especially with a cast of the size Stranger things has) on Netflix. If they could have a regular season or even a 12-15 episode season a lot of the inconsistencies and dropped character elements and explore dynamics way more.

Jonathan being thrust into responsibility when Steve actively chose it!!! makes me scream!!! Jonathan needing to figure out who he is, but at the same time not wanting to and avoiding it, while Steve had to figure that out before. Steve might be a bit directionless, but he knows who he is. Jonathan at least thinks he knows what he wants at first but he doesn't know who he is outside of his family. Especially now that Will is growing up and not needing him the same way as before. I think him and steve interacting would be so interesting and i WISH they let us see something other than animosity or ignoring each other. They've got similarities but are soooo different. Just. AHHHhh many thoughtssss

So I've been thinking about Daniel's arc in the books and how they kind of jumpstarted it by already turning him into a vampire at this point in the story. afaik, in the book, Daniel leaves Armand not too long after the QoTD events and ends up going insane and in the care of Marius for a long time. Marius seems to really care for him and they seem to be (romantic) companions? Ofc at the very end we do learn that Daniel goes back to Armand (thanks for the single sentence, Anne).

If you look at the perceived setup now: Armand in the wind, Daniel maybe looking for him but they don't seem to be on good terms...I wonder if they'll have Daniel and Marius meet and get together first before they give us a proper Armand/Daniel romantic resolution? Thinking about it from a dramatic standpoint, they could turn it into this chaotic love triangle kinda thing (I mean, the show has proven it's not afraid to turn up the relationship drama to 11). Delayed gratification, make the audience wait for what they want to see. It's an old trick. Especially if you're looking at 5+ seasons, you need to give people enough reasons to keep tuning in.

Then again, they may choose not to make Daniel and Marius romantic at all, and maybe it'll be more of a platonic teacher-student or caretaker-patient (if they work in the insanity plotline) dynamic.

How do you think they'll do the Daniel-Marius-Armand dynamic?

I‘m not sure how yet. But as you said, shortly after QotD Daniel ends up in Marius‘ care and then as his companion for a while. Eric recently let slip that it would be easy to fall in love with Raglan and if my gut feeling is right and rhat is actually Marius?? Then there we have it.

Of course they could also just add spice to Raglan and Daniel, and prepare the Body Thief plotline that way, that would also work.

But it too interesting a detail wrt Armand, Marius and Daniel to pass up, imho.

It will be very interesting, imho. There are parallels in the Marius/Armand and Armand/Daniel relationships that this older Daniel could definitely call out. It is also debatable if an older Daniel who knows would fall for Marius.

But what if he doesn’t know… you know?😅

Ahhhhh so many possibilities. I don’t think we can tell before we know for sure who will be Marius. And how dark they will go for him.

I am sure they won’t cuddle Marius. But I‘m also sure he’ll get nuance, just like Armand.

S6e15 thoughts:

Ahhhhh the anniversary, and the implied night of hot loving. Something I’ve considered though, is that Charlie says “it’s our anniversary” vs “it was our anniversary” yet they went out (or stayed in) to celebrate the night before. In my mind this could possibly mean that there were additional anniversary plans that got interrupted by Charlie being tapped to guard Fulford that night. That’s just an alternate take to explain his cringe face when she asks him to come back to the hotel. It’s more likely that he just wanted to be out investigating rather than on bodyguard duty, but the alternative might make its way into a fic.

Looks like they blew the remainder of the season’s budget on the explosion.

I most definitely didn’t have a good suspect list the first time around. They kept me guessing on this one.

Continuing the thread of “that’s not how the Canadian political system works: Mr Campaign Manager Guy wanting to be Chief of Staff to the PM as if that’s some kind of prestigious thing…yeah, no, this isn’t Veep.

I caught more of the snippets of the story that led time-travelling guy (sorry, I’m not looking up names) to his conclusions on the second watch. I actually missed so many details the first time around. There was a lot going on in this episode.

Oh Charlie. Your poor noggin.

It initially felt like an odd choice to leave Charlie with his phone but then it made sense that the bomber half-assed the communications system the way she half-assed her assassination plot.

Okay another detail I missed was that rehabbed addict guy’s brother-in-law was apparently the one who helped his mother get the explosives.

Ohhhhh the looks on Charlie’s and Sarah’s faces when she walks in and sees the vest on him. So good.

Bomber “Does she want to stay?”

Charlie “No”

Sarah “Yes”

I’m sure there was other plot stuff happening past this point but apparently I short-circuited once Charah were together with the bomb.

The unbroken eye contact between Sarah and Charlie…*sighs happily* John and Mayko play off each other so well.

I really wish we’d gotten the scene with the bomb being taken off Charlie. Don’t worry, it’ll make its way into a fic.

Anyway yeah, this was clearly meant to be the season finale, so I’m not expecting a ton next week, but as I’ve already said, I’m satisfied.

Now give us another season so we can get the resolution of the “not yet.”

AHHHHH I WATCHED MIRACULOUS AWAKENING TODAY AND BELOW ARE SOME OF MY THOUGHTS (SPOILERS OF COURSE!)

I was so taken off guard by the fact that it was a musical?!? Bruh 😂 At first, I thought it would just be that one song then they kept going. We’re not going to talk about the change of voice actors lol. I liked some of the songs but some were a bit cringe haha. Especially the one in the tune of the theme song with Marinette and Tikki but maybe I need to listen to them all more.

But my FAVOURITE was the song Chat sings after he falls in love with Ladybug ahhhh it absolutely confirms that Adrien is a Disney princess 👸

I liked how nervous they made Marinette and how obvious it was that she had no friends and was being bullied and ostracised by the rest of the school. In the series, back in Origins (I know they also cover it well in a Season 5 episode but ngl that was a while into the series), I did get the feel that Marinette was being bullied but more so solely by Chloe. I could tell that she didn’t have any friends until Alya came along but it didn’t seem like people didn’t like her per se. In the movie, they make it really obvious that the rest of the school avoids her like the plague because they think she’s weird. I mean, even Adrien thought she was weird when he first met her lol. Edit: Just to clarify this isn’t because I don’t want Marinette to not have self-confidence but I do think that it expressed how many people do feel at school: lonely, like they don’t fit in, and also many do struggle with bullying. And then she gets magical powers and gains more confidence (albeit a bit rushed but still).

I absolutely love how they portrayed Ladybug and Chat Noir’s relationship. The teasing (“watermelon”) was really fun to watch. And the fact that Chat called her the sidekick was just so funny. But the main thing was how Ladybug said they were partners and then they truly showed that they were!! Chat deserves love!! Although, at the end when Ladybug fixes everything, the crowd is only cheering Ladybug. I get that Chat had just found out his father was Hawkmoth so he was probably taking him to prison or something but he should have gotten some cheers as well.

Also, I don’t think this is the same in the show but the movie kind of hinted that the Ladybug and Chat Noir Miraculous often ‘fight’ a bit. I always love a bit of enemies to lovers so that was a little interesting thing I noticed they added to the lore.

They sort of did Plagg dirty here. Especially with the fart jokes and trash cheese lol (I know children apparently like fart jokes bit still). I mean, he was still funny but I didn’t feel the same emotional connection between him and Adrien as I do in the show. I guess they didn’t have enough time to develop them but we could have at least had one serious moment with Plagg or one moment where he actually gives Adrien some heartfelt advice. I think he did give him some love advice but it wasn’t that good haha.

Gabriel progressively getting weaker and haggard while using the Miraculous is what we needed to physically see in the show. Also just generally movie Gabriel has my heart. I was so scared when he recognised Chat as Adrien that he would just carry on trying to get his Miraculous etc but the fact that he broke down and detransforms, makes me empathise with him. This is what show Gabriel should have been 😭

THE REVEAL?!? I was not expecting this. I didn’t think they would go that far. But they did!! And it was so sweet. The way she puts his mask on her and her voice becomes confident as she says she’s Ladybug. Ahhhh!!! And the cut before the kiss!!!

Finally, it seems as though they might make a second one as the final scene with Nathalie seems to suggest Nathalie will become the next big bad?? Ngl though, if Nathalie becomes the next villain (with Gabriel’s encouragement) that kind of ruins his character arc lol. But it might be that he wants Nathalie to get rid of that corpse (hide the evidence, girl, hide the evidence). Idk we’ll see 🙈

Overall, this movie had me squealing, awwing and glued to my screen!!

I want to ramble on SO much about how absolutely brilliant the rtd 1 seasons are and how much I LOVE Rose Tyler but I’m gonna contain myself and just say that when you need fic recs, PLEASE hit me up. D/R has one of the greatest fic fandoms ever 💖💖

AHHHHH the fics!!! it didn't even occur to me!!!! that's actually such a balm to my spirit to know about, because right now i'm avoiding watching too many episodes at once out of just utter sadness that i will eventually get to a point where there's no rose tyler (please i'm so emotional even typing that). so knowing that there are amazing fics out there that can make the story last forever for me is 💖💖💖

and seriously I am SO HERE for the rambles, I just know there are so many spoilers you'd have to avoid 😆 but like!!!! idk dude! I finished the Daleks s1 episode last night and then the one after it today (the one with Adam, which, ew, glad he made a fool of himself, Rose my girl please why are your standards in the toilet) and there are just these moments with her where I'm struck by how different and special she is and I can't even put my finger on how to describe it! but I think their episode with the Daleks is one of the best written episodes of dw i've watched. SO much nuance. and it's all cause of her! and then in the next episode they get onto the top floor with the bad guys on it and Nine is like "you should go back downstairs" and Rose basically says, "pchaw" and keeps following him -- it's not just the way he kinda smiles to himself at this, it's the way that she does it with no pizzazz, no showing off, not even really being coy or something. she's just going to do it because she's going to do it. i mean, he really only takes the best. and he's got Rose. 😭

(also PLEEEAAASE I couldn't even handle the way they opened the episode with this little shenanigan between them, where they get Adam to believe Rose has all this knowledge about alien life/history herself, and it's so inconsequential but also somehow not, i dunno, i was (am) just a little obsessed with it.) (not to mention at the end when she tells Nine to stop snapping his finger to make Adam's dumb brain open up, just for her to do it in the next instant 😂 I LOVE HER)

1. Listening to music!!

Recently I’ve been really getting into music, I think it’s because I’ve had so many assignments lately but still. I listened to Billie Eilishs new album today, SO GOOD!! I’m not usually a Billie fan, but I’m so obsessed with this album. I’ve honestly been getting into Chappell Roan lately as well!

2. Journaling

I started to journal again this week (I’ve been so busy with assignments it’s impossible 😭) but doing it again makes me so happy, and honestly let’s me express my feelings in a really healthy way. It also lets me yap without bothering my friends.

3. READING

I’m a massive reader, and I haven’t been reading as much as I used too (I read 141 books in 2021, I will never peak like that again.) recently I’ve been rereading the shadowhunter books, I’m up to city of lost souls!! I’ve always been wanting to read some classics (I say read but really audiobooks). Currently listening to The castle Otranto and I’m also going to be starting persuasion soon!

4. Watching TV series

I’ve really gotten back into watching TV shows. I’ve definitely been watching a lot of Kdramas. But I’m also planning on binge watching house of the dragon soon, season two is coming out soon and I am SO EXCITED. Literally been waiting for this the moment the show finished. I personally really enjoyed the segment of the dance of the dragons in fire & blood, so I’ve really been liking the show (except for someeeeeee criticism)

5. PINTEREST

I just love Pinterest. I think everyone likes Pinterest!!! I don’t think this is something that needs to be expanded on! Pinterest is love, Pinterest is life 🙂‍↕️.

Ilsa, I’ve seen you posting a lot of Trigun and well I’m intrigued by it, to say the least. But just for giggles, would you try to convince me why should I watch it? 😆🤚🏻

AHHHHH!

I didn't think Trigun was going to worm its way into my brain so much but here we are. There is so much to love about it and I adore so many of the characters for a billion different ways. The character type of someone who is made into a killing machine and then is slowly convinced to accept love and forgiveness is my favourite and is all over trigun. So many characters see themselves as monstrous but choose to do what they see as right for the sake of / with the help of their friends. There are moments of silliness and of tragedy, all with an incredibly interesting setting which slowly gets revealed.

Because of the recent release of Trigun Stampede, the community is really active rn (esp on Tumblr!) and it's really cool to see so many incredible fanarts, comics, fanfics and discussions being made. It's very fun to be part of a very active fandom, but also one that is 25 years old and has fanworks that are older than I am.

I really love it, and I would recommend it, but unfortunately I also have some caveats which I gotta mention.

What you gotta know before getting into Trigun is that there are 4 different canon versions and each one has its problems. I wish I could recommend X version as the definitive and best, but that just doesn't exist which is very annoying.

1) Trigun Maximum: the manga

Good: incredible nuances to characters like Wolfwood, Knives, Livio/Razlo. Vashwood subtext is off the charts and their dynamic is incredibly fascinating and central. This is the most detailed and complex story of Trigun and has lots of themes, characters and plot points that don't exist in other versions. Has elements of sexism and sexual violence, but (imo) to show how shitty the world is, rather than to revel in the misogyny. The tone is tragic, with equal mix of hope and pain.

Bad: the female characters of Meryl and Milly get massively sidelined in comparison to their depictions elsewhere. It's a very long manga and has (imo) pacing issues that limit the impact of emotional moments. The art style is beautiful, but notoriously difficult to follow, especially in the many long fight scenes (particularly bad in volume 5). There's lots of disagreement about 'correct' translations and it can be hard to tell which character is doing/saying/thinking what at points which can make it confusing and frustrating to read at times.

Overall: 7/10, I would recommend but maybe not as your first bit of exposure to Trugun

2) 1998 anime Trigun

Good: the silliest of Triguns with some great voice acting. The friendships between Vash, Milly, Meryl and Wolfwood are very sweet and engaging (although it would have been nice to see more of the four of them together). It's a fun overview of the Trigun story and has a very entertaining mix of comedy and serious emotional moments. Lots of hijinks and lots of fights. Milly and Meryl are core characters and get time to shine (it is impossible not to love Milly). This is personal preference but the animation style is kinda goofy in the way it changes styles to exaggerate characters' feelings which I love. The first 12 ISH episodes are very Saturday morning cartoon vibes without being too inane and childish.

Bad: because it only had the first couple of volumes of the manga to adapt from, the mid-season tone shift and later fights feel rushed, a little confusing and ultimately lead to a less satisfying conclusion than in trimax. The misogyny is noticeable, especially in the first couple of episodes, though is limited to a couple of comments in some episodes and doesn't (I think) make it unwatchable. The antagonists are rushed through and it's hard to work out who the 'main' villain is. Tone change is quite abrupt. Wolfwood is a less developed character with a less intense (back)story, Livio/Razlo doesn't exist at all etc

Overall: 7/10, this is what I'd recommend you start with. It has pacing issues and uncomfortable sexist comments, but I think they're outweighed by the strengths of the main casts relationships and the pure entertainment value of it. Not the most satisfying ending, but they were constrained so :/

3) Badlands Rumble (film)

Good: animation is SO crisp. Wolfwood is at maximum chest exposure and actually his character is pretty interesting here. Milly and Meryl are back, but in limited roles. Some interesting world building and Vash and Wolfwood go thru their divorce arc TM which is dumb and funny and angsty.

Bad: Wolfwood is far too pale. The first half an hour is made almost unwatchable by the decision to make sexism and sexual harrassement a way to pad out the runtime. Vash is such a creep it just makes for uncomfortable watching.

4/10 don't watch if you're not already invested, and honestly do yourself a favour by watching the opening scene, then skipping to the 30 min ish mark and watch knowing that Vash has some very tough dried meat in his front coat pocket.

4) Trigun Stampede anime

Good: really cool 3D animation and music. Has Wolfwood's manga backstory and some manga characters like Livio and Crimsonnail, but with very different characterisations. I really liked the episode looking at the childhood of two orphans and how their love for each other was manipulated against them both. Much bigger focus on Knives than the original and more elaboration of his motivations and plans. Zazie is SO much better here than in the original anime. No uncomfortable sexism yay!

Bad: I... don't like tristamp very much. The characters are watered down from their manga versions and Knives is just kinda evil because he was en evil child, rather than the much more nuanced version in trimax. Milly doesn't exist (yet) and they added in a new character Roberto whose role in the story is (or at least was to me) obvious if you know the basics of the hero's journey structure. Everyone has been twinkified and Wolfwood doesn't even have his tits out smh. Vash just comes across as having less agency and his motivations feel weak. I really just dont like a lot of the character decision here BUT to be fair, that's because I'm comparing them to the manga. But also, a main plot point is someone taking over his brother's body so that his sisters can get pregnant and it definitely still feels weird in context. The focus on the two brothers makes other dynamics a little weaker, and has led to a lot of incest-y fandom things which is ehh.

5.5/10 there are some things it does very well and it's very popular for a reason but I personally think the characterisations are disappointing. It's trying to strike a weird balance between being its own, new thing and also nostalgia for original elements, leading to some questionable pacing and plot choices. It doesn't even have Midvalley the Hornfreak.

I would love to be able to talk about Trigun with you and be passionate about the elements of it I love, but also I don't want to recommend it without giving you a fair picture of the parts I'm more critical about. I genuinely love the world building and characters, which are expressed best in the less accessible form of the manga but are also found in the animes. What I'd recommend is watching the original anime first, but also you might need to give it the benefit of the doubt for the first couple episodes which is where the dodgy 90s sexism is most obvious. I'd be super interested in hearing your thoughts and reactions to it if you did watch it, and also please bear in mind that my complaints about tristamp are personal and there are many who love that version so don't take my negativity as fact.
