Life hack for people with short attention spans:

WATCH DUMB VIDEO ESSAYS!!

I am so goddamn serious. If you have a short attention span, the best thing I've found to help with that is video essays. Please bear with me on this post, or read the tldr:

My attention span was, and still is, totally fucked from my years on the internet and my adhd. I would spend hours on tiktok, instagram reels, yotube shorts, etc, and could barely sit through a TV show episode without opening pintrest to get even more mental stimulation.

But fast-forward to mid-fall last year, where I got really into video essays. Started out with 5 minute "storytime stickmen" videos, then 10 minute explanations of game lore bits, then 15 minute videos on punk subculture stuff, etc, and even though I was still using pintrest and reels relentlessly outside of that, after a little while, I realized that I had stopped pulling out my phone mid-video. The videos were actually grabbing and KEEPING my attention, even if I had little to no prior interest in the subject.

And by now, I've finished multiple 2.5 hour long videos on totally random stuff like the characterization of king candy, the making of a now lost-media tinkerbell movie, weird random stuff in fnaf security breach, etc. Now I actually SEEK OUT these longer videos, and even find myself getting involuntarily disappointed when a video essay I'm watching cuts out at 20 minutes! I actually enjoy sitting through long videos now!

And sure, I don't always watch them in one sitting, but if anything that's even better! I can come back to a video I was in the middle of and STILL keep my attention on it!

This is all to say, you can't just cold-turkey your way out of the instant-dopamine-rush of shortform content. It's just not gonna work. But if you do it gradually, you will likely find yourself getting actually INTERESTED in just the act of watching a longer video. And maybe by extension, you'll find yourself being more engaged in things like your classes because you're already GOOD at being engaged with lectures on random stuff, which will likely make you want to find MORE of that class content (the coursework) because you're used to the information being given for even longer periods of time than the classes are.

Now, this won't work for every type of content, and it obviously won't completely fix your attention span. Hell, I'm still addicted to plenty of online shortform content. But it is undeniably helpful to have even just one facet of your attention span be over an hour.

TLDR (since this IS a post directed at people with short attention spans); I used to have a detrimentally short-as-fuck attention span, but I basically exposure-therapy'd myself into enjoying long videos, and it did WONDERS for my attention span. I want to help you do the same.

I love prehistoric planet so so dearly but i do wish that they made the animals a little less gray.

Especially in cases of animals that are theorized to have sexual display traits like frills or crests?? They put some color on them but compared to real life animals (especially reptiles & birds!) they are just sooo dull.

Nanuqsaurus was especially disappointing for me. Maybe it's just because it's normally depicted as some kind of white color, but i feel having the opportunity for such a unique color on this dinosaur and making it mostly the same grayish brown as so many other dinosaurs in the show was a missed opportunity.

Part of this is definitely the filter and lighting they put over certain scenes to make them look more 'natural' i suppose. I think the male hatzegopteryx's crest is actually very beautiful, but unfortunately due to the lighting of the show it often appears so much more drab and dull than it should be, even in broad daylight .

This is a major reason the corythoraptor design stood out to me, because they were just so bright and beautiful in comparison to everything else in the show! Every time they were on screen i thought it was amazing to get to see these dinosaurs in such vibrant color! This shows that they /can/ depict dinosaurs in this way at least.

And i feel as though the only reason they /were/ blue is because they were based off of the modern cassowaries (one of which i got to see in person recently, they are a GORGEOUS blue. So much brighter than you would expect, heres a picture)

I just feel like, even though i love prehistoric planet, its quest to be overly 'realistic' holds it back in this area at least. The only animals they were willing to make super vibrant were the ones they based on a living similar bird, instead of considering that if the bright colors of a cassowary are possible, there's nothing that says that other bright colors could be possible on other types of dinosaurs.

Especially considering the colors of other birds! If they wanted to base the dino coloring on real life animals, they could have been inspired by other kinds of birds. Just because cassowaries are more 'dinosaur-like' doesnt discount the fact that birds are an incredibly diversely colored and patterned group of animals. There is plenty of potential for other colors in dinosaurs when looking at modern ones.

In fact, i would argue that the fossil evidence we have shows that dinosaurs could have been more brightly colored and distinctly patterned than the ones in the show, at least. While there haven't been bright yellow or blue dinos found, there has been evidence of brighter reds and browns, some greens and purples, iridescent like feathers, and more distinct patterns like stripes on several dinos.

It kind of baffles me how they were able to make leaps like the dreadnoughtus air sacs, but they weren't willing to make the dinosaurs a little brighter? I mean, so much paleo art nowadays depicts dinos in vibrant colors, i dont think it would be too much of a stretch.

Tldr, i love prehistoric planet and i think it has done a lot for the perception and depiction of dinosaurs as real life animals, i just wish that it didnt associate looking 'realistic' with 'looking gray' as much as it does, especially considering the amount of potential traits for sexual display dinosaurs had, and the colors of living birds and fossil evidence of dinosaur colors.

Video essays you have to watch

Am I the only one not surprised that Sabine gave up the map? Like, I’m genuinely surprised at how many people are angry at her about this, because it was the most in-character decision she’s made in the show.

Let me break it down real quick. There was a throwaway line earlier in the episode referencing the fact that Sabine’s family died in the Purge of Mandalore—that being her father, mother, and younger brother. In Rebels, Sabine had been rejected by her family (as a young teenager, mind you) because she had left the Imperial Academy after having a crisis of morality (involving her creating a superweapon that could destroy Beskar). She’s feels very betrayed by them, so much so that she doesn’t talk about them for the first two seasons, and doesn’t reconcile with them until season 3. And then a few years later, they die.

Meanwhile, while she was on her own, she was taken in by the Ghost Crew, which Rebels is pretty dang explicit about being her adopted family. They were there for her when no one else was, they took her in, kept her safe, and supported her through everything, even reconciling with her blood family. But now they’re all gone. Kanan’s dead. Ezra’s missing. Zeb’s flying for the New Republic, who we know is shorthanded right now. Hera is a New Republic general, and of course has Jacen and Chopper with her, and from what Sabine understands at the time, is too tied down in rules and regulations to help her find Ezra. Sabine thought she had Ahsoka, but (for reasons we’re as of yet unaware of) she deliberately walked away from her.

Sabine quite literally has no one, her family is gone, and family is everything to her. She’s holed herself up in Ezra’s abandoned tower—somewhere she never even visited in Rebels, by the way—because it’s the closest she can feel to them. This poor girl is looking for any scraps of family she can find.

In that moment, everyone who ever cared about Sabine had either died, or left her. But there was one person left who she knew cared about her, who cared so much that he gave everything, and, unlike the others, was only kept from her due physical impossibility. Is it any wonder she gave in?

I did a photoshoot with my girlfriend in Chloe Price (from Life Is Strange) cosplay for my college assessment, and I love how grungy and gritty the photos turned out!! I have always been drawn to grunge aesthetics in photography, so getting to use that to showcase Chloe's aesthetics in this shoot was so much fun!

Apologies for the difference in editing styles, the first and second were the photos I used for the assessment, and tried to make the first one look grungier, and tried to emphasise the warmth in the first one (to match the atmosphere of Arcadia Bay). The other two have either really basic corrections or weren't edited at all 😅
