I like to think that the Cocoa Puffs become the local cryptids in camp. Everyones making ghost-busting gangs trying to figure out the little guys for the first few months but then after that its just their friendly neighborhood ball of trauma. They scatter like dandelions across the camp grounds and it becomes commonplace to find one chilling under a bed or hiding in a boat or stuck in a tree. Sometimes they’ll steal food just for fun. They’re untameable.
There are exactly 2 ways to make a Puff go somewhere and thats by either a) having a really bad time with an emotion such as grief, anger, loneliness, etc and becoming enough of a catnip to the Puff embodying that emotion that they’ll follow you around like a storm cloud, OR, the more popular option, b) getting Will Solace himself to wolf whistle, which immediately prompts every single Puff in existence to scramble out of the woodwork like cockroaches and zoom towards him at top speeds. Nico doesn’t know if he should find it cute or be offended.

Creature (Both Haunted & Holy)
Vinsmoke Sanji/Reader - Chapter 28 - 4.2k
Two and a half months after the events of the last chapter, you adjust to Robin joining the crew, while coming to a decision after learning about exactly what your grandfather had done to Arlong.
ao3 | series masterlist | masterlist | next part
“Look me in the eyes, Luffy, where did all the fish go? They were set out on the deck to dry on the special racks I bought,” Luffy withers under your gaze, unable to meet your eyes, even when you squat to look at him. Sanji stands behind you with his arms crossed, angrier simply because you had explicitly told your captain to wait until they were fully dry. Luffy keeps his nervous stare firmly away from you and waves his hand in front of his face, trying to shoo you off.
“I have no idea what you’re talking about,”
“I can smell it on you, Luf. It’s not like I’m adjusting to my senses coming back again.”
Sea Mother, you sound just like your gram when she had caught Toha and yourself sneaking dried squid from the racks outside her hut. Sion had apologized fervently to her mother, while the old woman held both of you by your scruffs, looking almost amused by her mischievous grandchildren.
“That’s not fair-ayYE– Sanji! ” Luffy whines as he gets his ear pinched by your partner, and dragged off to help with chores to make up for this latest incident. From her spot on the deck, Robin laughs. Her giggles send a chill down your spine, and your ears flatten down to your skull, a warble unwillingly bubbling past your lips after you hear it,
You’re not certain why you’re so unsettled by her. You’ve shot up in height, gaining two inches, You’re looking more and more like a proper leopard seal every day, arms and legs growing thick with muscles. But something about Nico Robin startles you.
Maybe it’s her morbid humor. Or how she stares right through you. Sanji likes her well enough— something about her having “the vibe of childhood trauma” as he does. The only one who is as wary of her as you are is Zoro. So the two of you always tend to sit back whenever she says something, prickling like two startled cats as Luffy drapes himself over her shoulders. Which, speaking of… you hold one of the new crew cats tightly, enjoying the comfort he brings.
Chowder is an overfed tabby that had been one of the many parting gifts from Alabasta. That, along with three other cats named Curry, Miso, and Gumbo. All named lovingly by Luffy, who had insisted on being the one to name them, regardless of how you had been the one to request them, to deal with pests on the ship.
Not that you were complaining. At least they had some consistent theme. You just croon softly to yourself, while Roux lets out a squeaky meow. Zoro stands beside you, frowning at the archaeologist, who doesn’t notice, or doesn’t care, that you’re both wary of her. Luffy tries to hide behind her chair as Sanji barks an insult at him, and you watch as your poor captain is dragged across the ship by his stretchy ear, whining the entire way. Usopp just sighs and follows after, making a speech of what sounds like Luffy’s obituary.
The tanned ravenette makes eye contact with you and smiles, making your ears flatten to your head while Chowder lets out another pathetic mew, wriggling in your arms before settling himself half on your shoulders, laying like a baby waiting to be burped. Gracefully, Robin walks down to join you, closing her book as she does so, looking down at the two of you as she leans on the railing.
“Your captain is an interesting one, to be certain,” her mouth quirks up into a partial smile. “But a good one, nonetheless.”
“Guess you don’t have much else to compare to, besides Crocodile,” Zoro says dryly, and she laughs, covering her mouth with her hand.
“He was alright when it came down to it. Never forced me to do anything I didn’t want to.” She shrugs, and you shudder.
“That’s. Basic etiquette, I fear,” You mumble, and squeeze Chowder a bit tighter. The cat mewls, and presses a soft paw against your face, as if to say That was rude, Mom. “Sorry— I—”
And she just laughs again. Leaning over the railing with one hand on her chin as she watches you, before sauntering into the galley to likely watch whatever chores Sanji is making Luffy perform to make up for eating the only partially-dried fish. Zoro just gently grips you by your elbow, leading you away and towards the front deck of the Going Merry so the two of you can spar safely, and hopefully help you get more control over Tide as the two of you fall into a rhythm, fighting hand-to-hand rather than using your weapons of choice.
Tide groans from where it’s leaning next to Zoro’s katanas. You’re not sure if you imagine it, but two of the swords seem to rattle in response to it, distracting you just enough for Zoro to land a solid hit as he tackles you. The wind gets knocked from your lungs for a second, and it’s utterly freezing around you, too cold for you to just be winded—
The loud yelp from Zoro yanks you from your panic into an entirely new spiral. Half of the front deck is covered in frost, with several large chunks of blue ice pointing out to sea from where they’re frozen to the railing. And Zoro’s staring at you, not frozen, thank the Sea Mother , but still startled, with blue lips and frost in his hair and along his eyelashes.
“That’s,” he breathes out, and his breath forms a cloud in front of him, “Huh. That’s new, seal.”
And then he promptly slips on the ice, when he tries to step towards you, which makes you start to wheeze as you recover from being winded, causing yourself to slip on the ice. The thump of you both hitting the deck attracts Nami, who just stares at the two of you with a mildly concerned expression until she hears you both laughing. However, she is less amused by the chunks of ice on the ship, making it resemble an iceberg.
“As funny as it is to you, this is concerning,” Nami places a hand on one of the chunks, watching as it starts to steam from how warm the air around it is before she looks back at you. Tide shudders in your hand, while you frown down at it. “Your tuning fork has been acting weird ever since we left Alabasta,”
“It’s not a fork,” you blurt out, and Tide goes still, almost appreciative that you're defending it.
“ Threek , then,” Nami counters, grinning at you as you try to hold in another laugh before her gaze turns serious again. “You should call your grandfather on the ship’s snail. He could be able to help,”
The deck falls into silence, save for the sound of the chunks of ice starting to crack and fall from the boat. You’ve brought your knees up for your chest and held them there, gazing down. You seem to be refusing to look at your weapon now.
“I don’t wanna bother him,” you mumble out, “….he’s probably not able to call, being on the run and all.”
“He did that for you. I think he’d be happy to hear from you.” Zoro snorts, and you bite your lower lip.
This isn’t the first time this discussion has come up. Ace had been the one to bring up how ‘Pops’ had been grumbling over an old friend stirring up trouble, the flame-man just hadn’t realized who this old friend had been. One News Coo later, and you’d suddenly had a very odd day placed firmly in your hands.
On one hand, Arlong was dead. Shattered into pieces on the floor of his cell, terror written on his mangled face. He would never be able to hurt anyone again, would never be able to so much as breathe the same air as you because, well, he wasn’t breathing anymore.
But he still haunted you. The shadow you’d seen was mostly gone, yes, but that didn’t mean his touch was totally erased. A rather awkward session of dry humping with your partner on the galley’s couch had revealed that when you’d frozen up when Sanji went to suck a hickey into your neck.
You wanted to cry. To celebrate. To scream. The man who’d destroyed your life, who had taken away everything you once were, was dead. Dead and gone and likely rotting in a garbage heap, with your grandfather to thank. Pell had every right to do it, you supposed. He’d lost his daughter and her wife because of him. Lost four grandchildren, and countless old friends. Yet you’re conflicted. Part of you had wanted to be the one to kill Arlong. The other part wanted to curl up deep in a blanket and never so much as hear his name mentioned, or you felt like you’d puke.
How do you celebrate the death of your abuser when you can’t even bear to look at his face on old wanted posters without getting the strong urge to flee?
More so, how do you talk to the man who’d done it? How do you thank your grandfather, who you hardly know? Do you thank him?
“Or. You can continue to struggle with the threek,” Zoro’s bluntness startles you from your thoughts, and you scowl at him. “You have a chance to ask someone who wielded Tide before you, and who can help you control your other selkie issues. You’d be an idiot to not take advantage of it.”
Nami smacks the back of his head the moment the words leave his mouth, and you stare blankly at the swordsman just as Chopper scurries up the stairs to see what the commotion is about. He looks overjoyed at the ice on the deck, flopping down on it happily, and letting out the most adorable sigh, and effectively throwing off any serious discussion as you all look down at the little reindeer rubbing his face in the quickly melting ice. You look at Zoro, trying to decide how to answer him, before leaving to go give yourself some space in the storage room.
When you get down there, the calendar almost seems to stare at you. Next week, blocked out in bright blue highlighter, is your cycle. You huff and turn away from it, knowing it’s just a piece of paper on the wall, but at the same time, it’s more than that. You’re fully matured now, you’ve had a real cycle— this will help, with a more steady pattern to follow, but it’ll also be a nightmare, with… certain aspects.
The ladder creaks above you, and you rub your face, getting ready to tell Nami that no, she can’t use the money to buy more clothing when Zoro comes down, looking a bit embarrassed.
“I was being a dick.” He scratches the back of his head and refuses to meet your gaze. “You don’t have to talk to your grandfather unless you want to.”
“Thanks,” you stride forward and pinch his cheek, making him grumble, “I know it’s alot for you to apologize,”
“Yeah, yeah,” Zoro pushes you away by your face, but he’s grinning now until he looks at the calendar again, face falling. “Oh shit, that’s getting close again. You have like… two weeks?”
“Don’t remind me,” you groan, and sit against the wall, letting your head hit it gently against the wall. “Privacy would be nice.”
“So… you and the cook can…?” Zoro trails off, raising an eyebrow, before hissing when you smack him in the arm. “Ow! Okay– fine! You don’t fuck!”
“You’re a pain in the ass,” you grumble, before stretching out to start to sort out the shelves and looking back at him with a scowl, just as Curry winds himself around his legs, meowing pathetically before darting under one of the shelves, scurrying away with a rat in his mouth, which is followed by a familiar shriek from a certain cook, who appears to have finished whatever chores he’d set Luffy on.
“But not as big of a pain as your curly-eyebrowed boyfriend,” Zoro sighs, as the two of you make your way out of the storage room.
Sanji has the rat in his hands, cradling it to his chest while Curry meows pathetically at his feet, attracting Miso, Gumbo, and Chowder, all meowing to see what is in Sanji’s hands. He’s never hidden anything from him, not unless it’s their dinner, which then turns to the four cats trying to claw their way up his legs.
The moment you poke your head out of the door, and see what’s going on, you start to laugh, making Chowder turn to look at you, leaping off of his pants to prance towards you with a rather long mew. You scoop up the cat, watching as she sways slightly, completely limp in your arms, still meowing.
“Sanji? You take the rat from our boy Curry?” You tilt your head, gently pulling the aforementioned cat off of your partner.
“Yes— he nearly killed the poor thing,” Sanji peeks at the animal in his hands, cooing softly at it.
“That’s… what they’re supposed to do,” Curry and Chowder are both now crawling over you, the most recent rat-catcher of the two balancing on your shoulders, purring happily and headbutting against you. “That’s why I asked for them.”
“They’ve been hunting rats this whole time?!”
You blink in surprise at just how upset he sounds. “Yes…?”
The noise Sanji makes as he hurries to find Chopper makes you and Zoro share a glance, before you gently brush the cats off of you, following after him. When you find Sanji, he’s watching as Chopper is inspecting the little creature as you come up behind him. His worry about the little animal hits you through the bond, and you let out a surprised cough, to which Sanji turns to you with wide eyes.
“Are you okay?” You ask him, as you walk towards him slowly.
“Yeah— yeah, Parsley will be okay too,” Sanji says softly, and you pause.
“...who’s Parsley?”
“Our new pet,” Sanji gently takes the rat into his hands, and you hate how your heart squeezes over how it scurries to sit on the blond’s shoulder. “Usopp said he’d help me build a proper cage for him too! With enrichment and hammocks,” he gently scratches under the rat’s chin, and you again, feel your heart squeeze at just how cute the image is. “Isn’t he cute?”
But then the logic hits you, and you look from the rat, newly named Parsley, to your boyfriend. “...where’s the cage gonna go, Ji?”
It’s comical how blank his face goes, processing your question while Parsley manages to crawl up to sit on the top of his head.
“Because I’m not gonna let them go back in the storage room.”
“I didn’t expect you to,” Sanji mumbles, bringing his hand up to his chin, still thinking very hard about the problem he’s created for himself. “Hm.”
“.... would it count as the storage room, if you split it in half?”
Zoro’s input makes the both of you jump. On your part, you'd forgotten he'd been behind you when you went to find Sanji. Parsley squeaks in terror, from how the swordsman is holding Curry in his arms. The cat looks indifferent, having already been given a treat to reward him for his catch. Sanji scowls, and holds a now trembling rat in his hands.
“You could make it into a room. Then we don’t have to leave when the seal’s on her cycle,” Zoro grunts, and you both look at each other.
“I didn’t know you were capable of such logical thinking,”
“You were shocked that the cats were hunting rats! ”
"Don't you bring my innocent children into this! Curry is no murderer and I won't have you slandering him!" Sanji looks at the cat in Zoro's arms, cooing softly, "You didn't know, no you didn't, right my boy?" "Oh, forgive me, the cats that were doing their job, y'know, acting on their instincts,"
“How dare you say that, Mosshead, when the last two things that could be considered instincts are fighting actively for third place in your empty skull!”
You push yourself between them after that last insult, with a small sigh on your lips, leading them pair up to the galley where you can discuss the transformation of the storage room with the rest of the crew. When you present the reasoning behind the privacy for yourself and Sanji, it's a unanimous decision, to say the least.
Reorganizing the storage room is shockingly easy when you have someone who can spawn a near-infinite number of arms and hands, shifting the room around with ease, while also moving the furniture around the ship. Robin laughs softly, head in her palm as you watch her do this in a matter of minutes.
“You’re… mildly intimidating, do you know that?” You whisper, which makes the woman look at you again, an oddly warm smile on her lips. “And so are you, Enesidaon,” she leaves with a small pat to your head, who looks absolutely amazed by the newly created bedroom, setting his chin on your shoulder while wrapping his arms around your waist. “And here I thought we’d be working down to the wire,” Sanji mumbles, pressing a kiss to your cheek, before looking around the room, opening drawers, and looking at the newly built cage, with a very happy Parsley lounging in a hammock. You don’t miss the way he smiles at the rat, sticking his hands through the wire of the cage to stroke his head. Your stomach flutters, suddenly imagining him standing over a cradle with a gurgling pup in it.
He turns to look at you, with a raised eyebrow, a dusting of blush along his cheeks. “Someone has baby fever,” Sanji teases, and you let out a low warble of annoyance, flopping onto your bed with your hands over your face.
“It’s not baby fever— my cycle is coming up, so it’s making everything all hormonal,” You mumble, looking away from him as he crawls over you on the bed, grinning with amusement at your excuses. “So that little pinch in the bond…?”
“ Maybe it’s baby fever,” You admit, and he kisses your cheek playfully. “But not anything I’ll be acting on for a while.”
“I agree. We have a son to take care of already,” Sanji says rather solemnly, and you frown at him.
“Three sons, two daughters. You better include the cats, even when you’re mad at them,” You pinch his cheeks and he concedes, laughing and reaching to tickle your sides, quickly devolving into breathless laughter as the two of you squirm on the bed. The normalcy of it all appeals to you, especially with how Sanji looks at you as though you’re the most precious thing in the world to him. How he’d sworn he’d never let anyone hurt you again.
Pell would be happy to hear about that, you think. He’d want to know about how your life has changed since you’d seen him nearly seven months ago.
You come to a decision rather quickly after that, snuggling into Sanji’s arms with a contented trill.
Pell had never been one to read much. He’d keep track of the news, just to see if his old crewmates were up to anything. But he’s skeptical as to what exactly is true and what’s not. He’d started doubting the News Coo the moment that they’d changed Roger’s name.
And just as he’s sipping a warm cup of cider, the usual seagull drops the paper beside him with a squawk, catching the coin that he tosses upwards without so much as a second look at the old selkie. Pell sighs, and unrolls it all with his free hand, reading through the front page in a bored manner only to find your crew staring back at him.
The cider sprays all over the deck, the mug dropped on the wood as Pell tries to stop himself from choking, looking down at the front page in utter shock.
After his activity at Impel Down three months ago, infamous Gold Roger’s helmsman, Blackfin Pell, has returned to hiding. His current whereabouts are unknown but with the arrest of Portgas D. Ace, it’s thought that he’s taken refuge with the Whitebeard pirates. However, his bloodline appears to share the same sentiments for piracy, with his last surviving descendant, only known as The Blackfin Enesidaon, who is thought to have been a crew member of the Arlong Pirates. It is unclear if she has any ties to her grandfather, but she has been seen wielding her grandmother’s weapon and has inherited the rare Earth-Shaker ability that Rippled Coth possessed, as well as the Storm-Bringer ability that her grandfather was named for.
Along with those abilities, Blackfin appears to be in alliance with the Straw Hat Crew, gaining a bounty of 35,000,000 berries, alongside the crew’s first mate, Roronoa Zoro, 60,000,000, and captain, Monkey D. Luffy, 100,000,000.
The crew was last seen fleeing the Kingdom of Alabasta. It is unknown what part they played there, but it can only be thought to have been a part of the chaos that the former Warlord, Sir Crocodile, created. Any known whereabouts should be reported to the World Government for possible county collection. It is advised that no one under the level of Captain try to bring these pirates in.
You’re terrifying in the picture on your wanted poster. Tide is stuck in the ground, with a crack going towards the camera, and Pell can see the unconscious body of a…. sea-urchin-like woman tossed to the side alongside a man with oddly shaped…. nearly numerical, hair. Your eyes glow, and the scars on your arms seem to match the ethereal nature of it all. He can almost hear the rumbling of thunder based on the gray clouds hovering above.
The article doesn’t paint you as the rather awkward pup he knows you are. No, this is not the quiet selkie that had wandered into his hardware store, flinching when he moved too suddenly. It paints you as the next Storm King, and Pell doesn’t know if he should be proud or horrified about that.
A drought had been ended because of your anger. Rain that had stopped a civil war. Waves of rainwater sweeping through the streets of the capital city as you roared your anger for Baroque Works. And you’d passed out, he guessed, knowing how much of a toll that amount of work would have done on your still-recovering body. You’re alive, that much he knows, from the blurry picture of your crew’s ship in the distance.
Back to the camera. Left arm in the air. All next to your crew mates.
He wants to shred the newspaper and give Morgans a piece of his mind for claiming you were a part of Arlong’s crew. That bastard of a bird needed a reminder of just how seals dealt with waterfowl, for making up those facts. Perhaps he could even get a good meal out of it— pan-seared albatross breast with capers sounded lovely , now that he thought of it.
Should he call you?
He scratches at his beard, biting his lower lip just as he’d done whenever he was anxious about something. He’d wanted you to be the one to reach out. And he’s not entirely sure where you are at the moment– the paper made no mention of your current whereabouts, which is good! But the protective grandfather side of him wants to know where you are, and if you’re doing well. You look as though you’re doing fine— growing into a proper leopard seal, and learning how to wield Tide as well.
Whitebeard leaned over his shoulder to read the paper, using a giant hand to take it from Pell, who’s stopped reading it altogether, too lost in his thoughts. “Pah. They don’t mention where they put Ace. Bastards.”
“They also implied my grandpup was a willing accomplice in Arlong’s tom fuckery.” Pell grows, and crumples the paper, tossing it onto the deck. “I should pluck that bird.”
Edward reaches over and carefully uncrumples the paper ball, reading the article. He raises an eyebrow, looking at the picture of you, as well as the new wanted poster.
“But did you see her debut bounty?” Whitebeard cackles. “35,000,000! That's a fair bit more than yours was! Nowhere near Coth’s, though.” He sighs, leaning back on the deck. “What a woman she was!”
“Adjust to the inflation, you old bastard! And don’t talk about my wife like you had a chance!” Pell barks back, leaning against the railing as he looks out onto the open water. Coth would know what to do. She’d know exactly what to say to you, and he misses her now more than ever. The familiar pur-ru-ru-ru-ru-ru of his transponder snail interrupts his thoughts of his late mate.
“Hello?” He holds the little creature up to his mouth with a sigh, still looking out on the waves.
“Uhm. Hi…. Pop? It’s me.”
Pell nearly drops the snail the moment he hears your voice.

Last Bus to Everland by Sophie Cameron
Brody Fair feels like nobody gets him: not his overworked parents, not his genius older brother, and definitely not the girls in the projects set on making his life miserable. Then he meets Nico, an art student who takes Brody to Everland, a "knock-off Narnia that opens its door at 11:21pm each Thursday for Nico and his band of present-day misfits and miscreants. Here Brody finds his tribe and a weekly respite from a world where he feels out of place.
But when the doors to Everland begin to disappear, Brody is forced to make a decision: He can say goodbye to Everland and to Nico, or stay there and risk never seeing his family again. Will Nico take the last bus to Everland? - Storygraph
Everland is a place for the misfits, for those struggling to find themselves and need a release from the weight of reality and all its complexities. Brody, a bullied teen with a complicated home life, finds an invitation to such a place from Nico, a charismatic art student that shows him all the wonders Everland has to offer. Here, Brody finds somewhere he feels like he belongs, until he's faced with a decision of whether to stay or leave it forever.
This book totally resonated with me as a defining queer experience. It's about finding your people, those who you feel comfortable being your full self around without any barriers or masquerading. It's about discovering a place where you can test out parts of yourself, where you can discover who you are and what you're capable of. With Brody being gay, the significance of this only heightens that feeling, but the story doesn't solely focus around his sexuality or his understanding of it, which I found refreshing. There's more character development at work there, especially towards how Brody interacts with his family and how he views himself. It's a book that relishes and validates escapism, but also stresses the importance of coming back to reality when it truly matters.
The romance is a a slow burn, but helps culminate in a very emotional ending. I don't think Brody and Nico's relationship ever really landed for me, and it may be just because of how stretched out it is. Brody naturally has an instant crush on Nico after he saves his cat in the beginning, but Nico spends a good chunk of the book with someone else. I loved how this didn't evoke any feelings of jealously or mistrust between Brody and Dani, Nico's boyfriend, the two having a somewhat chill friendship with each other. There's no falling out between them all, as people simply move in different directions. Overall, it feels like a very maturing experience, as we see some people start to grow out of their need for Everland.
As a sort of Peter Pan inspired work, I think it's a great transformative take on the tale. It's not a one to one retelling, though it at least shares a mutual theme about growing up. Much like Peter Pan, there's a certain mystery around how the magic of the Everland works. There's no discovery of what exactly the place is, or even why the doors start disappearing. I enjoyed the magic realism quality of it all.
Throughout both the Everland and the real world, there's a great amount of diverse reputation pertaining to sexuality, culture, ethnicity, disability, mental illnesses, all of which are handled honestly and respectfully. There are moments that almost tip towards the side of melodrama, but I think the way in which they were handled kept it from going over the edge. This is a book that has a lot of different emotions: sadness, fear, anger, insecurity, loneliness, neglect, so at times it's a not so easy ride. But, on the whole, I found it to be such an affirming, encouraging read, imparting that while we may drift from those that love and help us grow, the effects are still there, always giving that slight push to go on.

As one of the people who strongly disliked TSATS, here are all the reasons that I think people felt that way:
- First and foremost, Mark Oshiro’s writing style and approach to the Riordanverse does not blend in well with the style that readers are used to. Rick Riordan usually takes a fast-paced action-packed approach, and within the first series, Rick was good at leaving vague/implicit/subtle findings that were open to interpretation. While this approach does have its flaws, it generally works and is one thing people really like. Mark, for whatever reason, can’t mesh with that style. Their pacing is very, very, very slow, their approach to action and battle conflict isn’t very interesting, and they’re very blatant/hamfisty with the themes and observations; very little is left up to imagination.
- During one of the tour stops for the TSATS (or maybe even on Twitter), Mark admitted to having read Solangelo fanfic. This is really revealing, because “It feels like fanfiction!” is one of the most common critiques launched at the novel, and personally, I think it shows. Even in the first few chapters, something about the world and the characters doesn’t feel quite right. There’s a lot of OOC moments, fanservice moments, cliche tropes and dialogue, humor that’s little more than pop culture references and themes that are just too in your face. All in all, it doesn’t feel or sound like a classic Riordanverse story; it feels like a poor imitation of one.
- Back to characters being OOC or not feeling in line with who they’ve been established to be: this book is littered with moments like that. Nico feels like he’s had a lot of off-page development, with some moments feeling more like Fanon!Nico rather than Canon!Nico. Will is unusually incompetent in this book and can’t seem to help himself. Mr. D is uncharacteristically nice and seems to be really publicly invested in demigod wellness all of a sudden. The boys go to Annabeth and Percy for advice, and you’d think a true ‘Wise’ girl would tell them something practical, like where to find Hermes’ shrine, which rivers they can drink from, getting through the House of Night, etc. But no, all she can offer is advice about being cheesy with each other. Nyx, for some poorly-explained reason, seems to be overly concerned with how Nico is choosing to live his life, despite the fact that she’s a primordial goddess who’s one of the most powerful entities in the mythos, who used to be Queen of the gods before passing the crown to Ouranos in some accounts, and who dwells in one of the most terrifying places that most demigods would never step foot into. Some little queer kid from a glorified summer camp in the mortal world shouldn’t even register on her radar, let alone require a whole scheme to lure him down into Tartarus. And yet, here she is, obsessing over Nico’s nature as if it has any bearing on her. She could have gone her whole existence without ever acknowledging who Nico was, and literally nothing would be different for her.
- The sense of stakes in this book were lacking. There were already moments where Tartarus didn’t feel as life-changing as it could have in House of Hades, and Tartarus becomes even more of a joke in this book. Very infrequently did Nico and Will actually feel like they were in danger and/or facing threats as serious as anything Percabeth went through.
- The pacing was absolutely terrible. The journey through Tartarus was used as the main selling point of the book, but yet, it takes the boys 32 out for 57 chapters to actually get into Tartarus. The fact that it takes them more than halfway through the entire novel just to begin the real meat of the quest is absolutely ridiculous, and I will never understand that writing decisions.
- Last but not least, the themes of this novel were poorly handled/not explored effectively, with Will being the biggest victim of this. There are many angles to approach the whole “not comfortable with death or darkness” arc, and I feel like Mark/Rick chose the approach that made the least amount of sense for Will. Not to mention, the conclusion Will comes to regarding the Underworld is essentially that “it’s not a bad place because living things can thrive down there”. This is not an offensive sentiment in and of itself, but it’s the wrong lesson for Will to learn. Will should have concluded that the Underworld is a neutral place not because of the presence of light/living things, but because death and darkness are not inherently evil concepts or phenomena. Death is a natural element of the world. Darkness is a natural element of the world. Though they are often associated with evil things, they are not intrinsically evil, and they have their place in the cycles of humanity.
There’s more I could say, but those are the most common arguments I’ve seen.
Miscellaneous PJO Post (7 of ??)
Ok, this question is for my fellow solangelo antis:
Why exactly is tsats so polarising? I mean, I understand the Platinum Principle of opinions and nuances, but tsats is so polarising that I was wondering what possible reasons are there. [Basically just give your answers in comments/reblogs. I’ll throw in my theory later (it’s kinda lame…)]

Another backstory theory post! This'll likely be the longest since I'm going to do more than 3, infact I'm just finishing off the characters I haven't written about.. So let's go wowowow
∘₊✧──────✧₊∘
Charles Cuevas
"If you forgot it, then it probably wasn’t important to begin with. None of those memories should ever be kept, anyway."
I've rambled about his backstory before, so you can go back to earlier posts/reblogs of mine to read. I'll only gloss over what we know about him as of now here.
He's been shown a few times to not know how to do basic chores. Like doing laundry or cooking. For a person who hates being looked down upon, it's pretty odd that he never bothered learning to do things as simple as those.
He mentions that his parents never found it important to teach him those things.. which is just weird? Parents *should* teach their children how to do basic chores, it doesn't help that Charles is currently an ADULT. So why is that?
Well, the most obvious assumption is that he had incredibly negligent parents. Not to the degree of straight up ignoring him, but perhaps they were just.. really busy all the time. They didn't have the time to teach him things that they deemed 'unimportant'. He could possibly have grown up around maids/butlers if he was *those* rich kids yk.
Charles seems to have a lot of repressed memories.. Especially with his hemophobia. To quote Veronika, "Trauma acquired in one's childhood can 'disappear' until it is triggered again years later. So someone can spend years unaware that they have trauma, only for it to be triggered and all said unpleasant memories come rushing back in."
So it fits with his HQ, the memory and event that made him how he (sorta) is now, is long gone and forgotten. It's a memory that shouldn't be kept, to be stored and hidden away somewhere. It's described as unimportant, which is *why* it should be forgotten.
Charles was probably always emotionally vulnerable, and that *event* worsened him even more. The arrogant front he has infront of others is just a front, it's likely he knows that he'll be mocked and made fun of again if he were to show how he really is.
Nico Hakobyan
"Why should I own up for the mistakes that someone else made?"
Nico is very socially awkward, afraid to speak up because he doesn't want others to hate or react negatively towards him. Yet at the same time, they've been shown to be brutally honest.
He comes off as.. a little selfish, despite being so shy. They tend to just go with the flow and following what others do. Like how in the prologue they wanted to talk with Teruko and Xander because everyone else did it, and if he didn't that would just make him weird.
His quote is probably related to the guilt/shame theme... (If you squint) Yeah, why *should* you own up to a mistake you didn't make? Well, maybe it's because it was his mistake. Maybe deep regret for what he did, very likely with another person, and he's just convincing himself he did nothing wrong.
He's never really come off as a pushover typa guy to me.. Because he can speak his mind if he wishes to, just super awkward. If he was forced into doing something he didn't want to do, and then a tragedy happened because of it, who wouldnt feel guilty though?
Xander Matthews
"survivor guilt(n): feelings of guilt for having survived a catastrophe in which others died."
Xander's quote is a little different compared to the rest, it's just the textbook definition of 'survivor guilt', but whatever. A lot of Xander's backstory was revealed in the bonus episode (sniffs) so let's go over that again shall we?
Apparently, somewhere in a place called Chariton during May, (took place when he was 14, so presumably 4 or more years ago if he's supposed to be 18 when DRDT starts) there was an infected river where a lot of people had gotten sick from it, and unfortunately died as there was no nearby hospital.
Xander feels guilt for not being able to stop something like that.. Why? Because he was busy studying for his finals, burying his face in books just so he could be someone his family could be proud of. So he could keep his scholarship and not get sent back home.
So Xander was a lot more diligent when it came to school and grades, considering he got a scholarship. He is similar to Min in a way, something that was brought up in the prologue and even Min's own Bonus Ep, but I'll talk about it later.
Why does he feel survivor guilt for it? Because he survived such a horrifying incident? Well, maybe if you look at it that way, sure. But he was never really *involved* with it was he? 'Visiting Graves' that's the name of the episode, whose grave is it though?
With how he suddenly brought up the incident, it's very likely that a person close to him died in that incident. Perhaps it was a death anniversary. No idea who the person is exactly, but definitely a friend or family member.
Xander feels as if he could've stopped that incident, he feels guilty for not being able to do anything, and because of that, many died. Though, I do agree w him not rlly being able to do much.. as he was just a kid.
Min Jeung
"I wanted to save you."
Of all the quotes, Min's one definitely stands out the most. Because it's what she said before she died. Now because of this, it brings up one other theory. Are the HQs what characters say before they die?
Some quotes, such as David's, Nico's, Eden's, and Hu's, do fit with this theme. But it does come off as rather inconsistent with a few other characters, like J, Arei and Veronika (To me atleast.)
Now what about Xander's? He's also dead, but what does survivor guilt have to do with it? Don't forget the rules of the killing game, killing someone and escaping means sacrificing the lives of everyone else. That's what it means to live in this game.
He killed because someone told him to, he really did like Teruko, but he followed orders anyways (odd, considering he's a rebel)
Min wanted to save Teruko, but that ended up killing Xander instead. She never wanted to hurt anyone, she wanted to keep Teruko safe. People making her out to be the bad guy because she's the blackened is understandable, but you gotta realise she is just as much of a victim.
Min also had a Bonus Episode, where it was revealed she isn't technically an ultimate. The title of Ultimate Student was given to her because she spent *her whole life* studying because of some test.
Min would've been around *5 years old* when she had heard of the Ultimate Contest. Her family was poor, and was offered to be sponsored by some big rich company. All they wanted in return, was for Min to pass the test and become the Ultimate Student.
Imagine being 5 years old, and being told to study everyday and night because some company asked you to, in exchange for offering to cover your family's expenses. Min is the Ultimate Student not because she's the smartest, but because she was their ideal student.
Even the smartest of students find the school system absurd. MANY students find the school system absurd. Min knows that everything she's studying for is useless, that it wont be helpful in the future. But she puts up with it anyways, because she wants to be *somebody*. She wants to be talented. That test was her only hope. (Haha get it hope)
At the end of the day, Min's quote doesn't fit in necessarily with her backstory. But I could propose the idea that she left out some parts in her conversation w her classmate. It was mainly centered around her Ultimate, and Hope's Peak. But perhaps an incident occurred where she failed to save someone? Maybe.. Because she couldn't save that someone, that's the reason she got sponsored?
Maybe her goal to becoming an Ultimate was a promise of sorts, she desperately wanted to save that person. But couldn't, so she's honoring their last wish instead. I don't really know, again these are all just theories..
And with that, I'm done! With all the participants, at least. :)

You can take this with a grain of salt given i havent re-read the HoO series recently, but Leo’s themes about being the odd man out among The Seven, about his mother dying and it being his fault, about powers that are /scary/ compared to other demigods, and the conversations we DID get with him and Nico all paint a really interesting picture of having more in common than people think.
Regarding the plot of this original post, I think there’s a lot to be said about Calypso’s relationships with the various young men who tried and failed to save her (i also think its a shit authorial decision to make Percy “betray his promise” but whatever) and i think she /does/ need a modern friend to help her navigate this world, but should not be romantically entangled.
However. Part of my leo/nico decision rests on the fact that in the final book of HoO, Nico has a very brief interactions with a guy that he has no real connection to either either in this series, or in the previous one, and somehow ends updating this dude, and then fandom spun up years and years of sunshine boy X shadow prince, based on aesthetics and their vague understanding of the frankly flat background character of “will” when it feels like such a half ass writing direction for Nico to go as a person / fleshed out main character. I know that recently a book came out that was solely devoted to the sunshine shadow duo, but going from HoO to ToA and seein them paired up was just. What??? I think the author realized he needed to do SOMETHING with nico and didnt know what, so rushed to his stack of “kids from the OG series who survived the battle of manhattan” and chose the most aesthetically pleasing combination knowing the gay-starved tumblrinas whove been corkboard theorizing nico’s queerness for years would immediately latch on to a viable partner that didnt break up his established ships. But insanely, he didn’t look at Leo and think “this kid has compatibility with Nico, maybe i should make him bisexual” when he could instead stick him with Calypso.
Hell, remember how Leo sent a “im not dead” scroll to his friends??? Remember that NICO kept the scroll, and he looks at it every time he begins to get angry at Leo.??? Remember that when Leo finally shows up, Nico organizes the campers to take numbers from him, so they could both welcome Leo back and punch him, and Nico himself punches Leo last? I think theres potential there. I think theres chemistry. I think it would be a creative way to move them both forward as people in a far more interesting way than “leo is worried about calypso meeting hot boys while she attends human highschool” and “nico is magically fixed by sunshine flat character boyfriend”.
I don't like Caleo.
I think in Heroes of Olympus, Riordan kind of just got really desperate to give Leo a girlfriend. The whole relationship with Leo and Calypso feels really forced/rushed.
Calypso is also rude to Leo for like, no reason, which is a huge change since we saw her interaction with Percy. I understand that she's bitter...but she didn't take it out on Percy, so why do that to Leo? And it's not like she stops being rude once she's free, either. No hate to her, I know she's been through a lot, I just feel like the writing was a little goofy.
I also think it's weird that she's immortal and then just ends up with a 16 year old kid. It makes me uncomfortable. I definitely think she should be free, but she doesn't need to stay with a teenage boy? Especially now that she has other people she could date? I think it's a little gross.
Anyway that's my rant thing, thanks for comin to my TED talk.

Hey! Anyone want some heavy platonic Loceit angsty headcanons I've extracted from the new episode? Well, too bad because it's happening regardless. :)
Yes, also some Unsympathetic Patton. You know what blog you're on. (This interpretation/headcanon shall not die. Not here.)
(Also, this is going to combine my observations and thoughts as well, so sorry in advance if this post turns out as a bit of a mess.)
Alright, so! Orange Side confirmation. How we feelin', Sanders Sides fandom, how we feelin'?
Honestly, the Orange Side theory wasn't something I was really all that into. It was a 'meh, could be cool' headcanon for me personally. But I have to say the way the reveal was handled made me jump in my seat with pure joy. No joke, I audibly gasped when Logan's eyes flashed orange.
It was all downhill from there, I was excited. Anyone who knows me will tell you I'm a sucker for character's eyes glowing when they've reached their limit or are displaying a power they've never shown before, combine that with an unexpected reveal and I'm sold.
Plus, glowing eyes have been a common theme with Unsympathetic content and Dark Side headcanons so you could imagine how the first peak into the Orange Side's existence (or, rather confirmation. we all saw the 'hello' hint, Orange, you cheeky little munchkin.) was his color in Logan's eyes made me feel. It was so cool!!! Ah!
Then Thomas had to tease us again at the end card with our boy Orange's eyes popping up in the darkness, waiting for his chance to be too loud to ignore. Like, the audacity. Who do you think you are, Thomas?! (That was a joke. Sorry, I'm just really pumped.)
Also, Remus got quite a few laughs out of me. Ah, I missed him.
Okay, headcanon time! We're going to do Logan first, then Janus, then combine the two. Sound good? Alright, here we go (Trigger Warning for discussions of alcoholism, please if anything I write here sounds insensitive or inaccurate, let me know and I will edit. Also, no need to read if you don't want to. Stay safe.) :
Logan
Logan knew where to grab for that alcohol bottle.
I mean, I guess that makes sense since he lives there and is naturally the most observant Side. But...that bottle's placement was a little too convenient.
Sure it was played up as a joke and it was funny.
But something about the way Logan threw his coffee into the sink and quickly replaced it with the wine stuck out to me.
I've joked about Logan and/or Janus having to "drink to cope" due to sharing the single brain cell Thomas has amongst all the chaos. But seeing that in an actual episode, even as a gag, is kind of...different.
Let me explain.
This may be a common thing for Logan that he struggles with.
He wakes up early to be the first one to help Thomas start the day, naturally. Logan goes to make his cup of coffee and there's always the lingering urge to take a sip of wine before anyone can see because he just...can't face everyone without needing just a little bit of it to cloud out all the gross, petty, negative feelings he experiences every day around them.
He's logic. He can't be drinking and risk any more harm to Thomas's function.
So, it's a constant battle with coffee vs wine, coffee vs wine, coffee vs wine-
Most of the time Logan is able to resist and go with the coffee.
It doesn't make him feel good in the slightest. If anything it makes him feel even worse knowing he'll be more alert that day.
Logan hates that was even a thought at all. He needs to be alert. Otherwise everything will fall apart. He is the rock in the system and without him everything will crumble.
Such a selfish mindset. He needed to focus.
Other days Logan just doesn't have it in him to discard the wine regardless of how much he wants to.
He knows what the day holds for him. It was all so repetitive at this point. Logan knew when he wasn't able to get through it despite it all.
That didn't stop him from shaming himself for caving. He should be able to handle this. He's made so much progress with resisting it up to this point but today he through it away again because he just had to, right?
Sometimes Logan finds himself "cheating" by hiding a couple drops of wine into his coffee on days when he chose the coffee but later felt particularly bad about...a lot of things, into his second cup.
Logan more often times chooses neither. The temptation for clouding out the others was just too strong and was a waste of time.
Logan is beyond tired of the others.
Every single action they have agitates him now. No matter how minor it is.
Roman's loud voice and constant references makes Logan's toes unconsciously curl beneath his shoes. Even a silent warm smile and wave from the prince fills Logan with an unpleasant tingle in his knuckles.
Virgil's neverending foreboding and unnecessary nasty remarks that he doesn't even bother to filter provokes Logan's new habit of biting his tongue. Any kindness he ever gives him makes his stomach twist.
Patton's nicknames, poking for for a laugh, his "sweet" way of shoving away any objection he may have, how casually he behaves as if he isn't part of any problems- how quickly he's prepared to "bounce back". Logan feels like every word, action from him something steps on a guitar cord in the back of his mind that makes the ugliest, loud, screeching sound. He feels this strange warm fuzzy ache he can't define. All he hears is that cord playing faster and faster the longer he stays in their presence. Logan no longer trusts himself alone with Patton.
Logan thinks if he just separates from the others long enough, the ugly strumming noise will go away.
But he's so wrong.
Logan can hear it even when he's all alone. When it's finally silent, he still can't get rid of it.
It's loudest when Logan is alone in his room. Logan has lost count of how many nights he's spent clenching his head, quietly sobbing, and praying for it to just go away already.
Logan often feels like he's losing it.
On nights where the sounds are particularly louder than usual, he swears he can see orange shadows creeping around him, lights of the color flashing on and off, he sometimes even sees it seeping in and out of the cracks of his door like a thick fog. At times he'll even wake to it glowing absurdly bright through his window.
It's just the sunrise. Logan tells himself. He has to believe that. Everything else looked normal, after all.
What's worse is Logan doesn't know how long he's been hearing this sound or seeing the strange lights.
Patton knows about Logan's late night and early morning struggles.
But surprise, surprise, he pretends as if he's nonthewiser.
If either Virgil or Roman asks about Logan, Patton will answer: "Oh, that silly billy's probably got his head in one of his astronomy books again! I wouldn't bother him right now."
Knowing full well he's having an emotional breakdown in his room that gets worse every day.
Knowing about the little sneaks of alcohol in his hot morning beverage. Might even speak about yummy drink combinations when they hang out in the living room, while Logan is present, specifically and even only on the days Patton knows he's cheating with his bad habit, while he's still drinking it.
The further Logan is to the edge, the better. Patton is still bitter about the events of Redux ending in his favor, after all. He needs leverage from somewhere.
When Thomas left to see Nico, Logan heard the cord again. His chest tightened and though he could feel the tears welling up, he kept them down.
Thomas hasn't been very happy lately. He had to let him have this.
No matter how loud those cords get.
Janus
I noticed that Janus was either unseen by the others or unacknowledged by them.
Janus was near all of them but far enough that he was separated.
He could've just popped up at the end without them noticing but...that's less angsty therefore less fun so-
Janus has been the instigator for bringing Sides that have been hidden away to be brought to light for a long time. If the assumption that Janus let Remus out is true.
He's always been hinting at upcoming events that are sure to come if Thomas continues to ignore certain aspects of himself.
He knows. He knows our Orange boy is getting worse and soon will be too loud to ignore. Janus wants to protect Thomas but that's becoming harder every day. Thomas is making it harder.
Janus will reveal the Orange Side eventually. And very soon. Hell, that's looking like less and less of a choice considering Logan's...outburst.
I think Janus has this painful awareness that he can be seriously hated for doing his job. After all, he's always the one who's forced them to acknowledge uncomfortable truths about Thomas.
He's the one giving them all of those hard pills to swallow and especially after Remus, it is definitely overwhelming and exhausting to be met with.
They question their roles more and more because of how used they are to the fixed mindset Thomas has had for such a long time.
That can't feel good.
Janus knows that his job may cause more hatred to fester the more that's revealed.
Janus is being kept at arms length and he knows that won't stop any time soon.
But he's a clever snake. That won't keep him from keeping an eye on Patton.
(Find it real suspicious that Patton was all mushy with Janus in that end card but still is at a big distance from him.)
Loceit
Janus will sometimes find Logan in the common room with his head in his arms, sprawled out against the coffee table. His glasses being discarded from half his face, unmistakable tears lazily dripping out of his lifeless eyes.
Janus would wordlessly go to the sink and grab a glass, filling it with water.
Janus goes over to Logan, giving him a gentle rub on the back. He urges him to sit up. It takes Logan a few minutes but eventually does.
Janus hands Logan the water, supporting the back of his neck as struggles to get it down, reminding him to take his time.
Janus takes his glasses and gently sets them on the table. He hands Logan some tissues.
Logan lifelessly takes them and tries to clean his face. But he always ends up crying into them.
Janus moves Logan unkempt bangs from his face before moving his head to his shoulder. Janus manifests a warm blanket over Logan and uses a bit of his abilities to soothe the shorter man's pain, tenderly putting pressure on his neck.
Janus and Logan have a talk. Logan always asks why he bothers to stop and comfort him.
"You've helped me through a lot, Logan. Not returning the favor is out of the question."
That was always his answer.
Janus and Logan do this often.
Janus opens up about sometimes needing a bit of a drink himself from time to time. Though mostly that consists of tea more often than not, he sometimes has a glass of wine or two to relax on days when it's particularly hard.
He feels ashamed of it. Janus has to be the strongest out of everyone, especially the Dark Sides. Allowing things to faze him was the worst case scenario. At least, to that degree.
But Janus understands that isn't his fault and urges Logan not to blame himself, either. While he hated that weakness he occasionally submitted to, he wasn't going to let the rare slip up to define the worth of his role.
Logan thinks that Janus really is the strongest out of all of them just for saying things like that and he's being too hard on himself.
On nights when things become too much Janus will sit with Logan and share a drink. They try to have as many conversations without wine as possible but sometimes Janus says "screw it" and sits with Logan with one or two drinks.
Just having Janus there helps Logan choose his coffee in the mornings and feel as if he's being heard even a little bit.
Now if only those cords could actually quiet down, that'd be even better.

tower of nero spoilers
i have just finished the tower of nero. and before i go searching for other people’s thoughts and art and more of the characters i love so much, i want to write down some of my own thoughts because i know as soon as i delve into that ‘ton spoilers’ hashtag there are going to be complaints and criticisms and so much that i don’t want to hear, or essays that’ll make me upset, or things that’ll change my perception on the book (because on this website people really love to hate the trials of apollo).
i want to start with: i loved it. it didn’t feel earth-shattering or huge and momentous like some of my favourite riordanverse books (house of hades, the blood of olympus, the last olympian and maybe some of the magnus chase books take those pedestals for me) but it was satisfying. and i think it was satisfying because it in no way felt like an ending. whether because eventually rick will write that will-and-nico-go-through-tartarus-and-save-bob novella, or because we (or at least i) will continue writing and imagining and creating for this world i don’t know. he didn’t wrap up the story in a perfect little bow like ‘nineteen years later’, he simply put it on pause. gave us a glimpse of where every character was at at the end.
the only thing that makes me so angry and upset is that i did manage to get some spoilers for moments that i know would have been so good to experience for the first time if i hadn’t been spoiled for them. the moment where rachel mentions penguins in a mansion near her house, nico getting mental health advice from mr d, the fact that will and nico were going to be in the book for so much of the story, but the big thing was literally spoiled for me two days ago, it was the reason i sat down to read it as fast as possible because i was terrified of getting more spoiled and not being able to experience the moments for myself, was that piper had a girlfriend. i know that reading that for the first time would have been so cool and surprising, and the fact that when it came up for a moment in the last couple pages all i felt was disappointment because it was spoiled for me and because it was now tinged with whatever that person was saying about her having a girlfriend.
but i still had some warm fuzzy moments, the two parts where apollo thinks he’s going to die but nico comes up behind him - so good. impeccable.
Leader Guy spat. ‘Now, I kill you.’
He raised his sword... and froze. His face turned pale. His skin began to shrivel. His beard fell out whisker by whisker like dead pine needles. Finally, his skin crumbled away, along with his clothes and flesh, until Leader Guy was nothing but a bleached-white skeleton, holding a sword in his bony hands.
Standing behind him, his hand on the skeleton’s shoulder, was Nico di Angelo.
and
Nero raised his hand, ready to give the kill command, when behind me a mighty BOOM! shook the chamber. Half our enemies were thrown off their feet. Cracks sprouted in the windowsand the marble columns. Ceiling tiles broke, raining dust like split bags of flour.
I turned to see the impenetrable blast doors lying twisted and broken, a strangely emaciated red bull standing in the breach. Behind it stood Nico di Angelo.
gods. poetic brilliance. i can’t believe i’m still a nico di angelo stannie in the year 2021. in five years i have not changed (ever since the tv show announcement last summer i have managed to morph into myself from 2017)
from here i’m not sure where to go next i kind of want to go through everything, except it’ll be more difficult than my tyrant’s tomb reaction because i wasn’t reading on a kindle and thus can’t just do funny little reactions to screenshots of quotes, so i’ll just skim through the book page by page and see what i can comment on (i’m not planning on doing analysis today, no thank you, just enjoying the end of my childhood and trying to squeeze as much out of it as possible)
i have an emotional attachment to mr. snake from the very first chapter, and am very upset that he’ll never get off on his baltimore stop and get to see his wife, lu had no reason to shoot and kill him like that.
that brings me to lu, i liked her, it was interesting to see how rick kind of brought in not only the overarching theme of abuse, but also people who let the abuse happen, i have more i could say on this i’m too lazy to right now, and i promised no analysis - or the fact that Lu had conspired to make the show non-lethal to spare Meg’s feelings rather than - oh, I don’t know - refusing to do Nero’s dirty work in the first place and getting Meg out of that house of horrors.
And are you any better? taunted a small voice in my brain. How many times have you stood up to Zeus?
Okay, small voice. Fair point. Tyrants are not easy to opppose or walk away from, especially when you depend on them for everything.
the parallels to meg and lester heading to percy’s apartment, and then to camp half blood to the hidden oracle was so cool to read, every callback to the hidden oracle just there to remind us readers exactly how far apollo has come and how he’s changed; the entire chapter with sally, paul and estelle just felt sickly sweet, it just didn’t seem real how wholesome and good that family is, like i get why apollo broke down and just sobbed in that shower.
also rick really saying acab again in toa, i thought he was done after that elf cop chapter in magnus chase (the magnus chase series is a masterpiece) but apparently not, with A ‘good cop’ is still a cop... still a part of the mind game.
the grey sisters, i forgot about them completely but this threw me back into was it the sea of monsters when annabeth summoned them? i’m not sure, it could have been the lightning thief either, they really remind me of the disney hercules movie. the whole ganymede paragraph was gold, i love gods being canonically confirmed lgbt in the riordanverse. i also love the whole eye-tossing part -
‘He will crush our eye,’ Anger cried, ‘if we don’t recite our verses!’
‘I will not!’
‘We will all die!’ Wasp said. ‘He is crazy!’
‘I AM NOT!’
‘Fine, you win!’ Tempest howled.
also, the explanation for why dionysus chooses to look the way he does was perfect, because it was something i often wondered about and wasn’t expecting to get an explanation for, and i imagine the whole mythological dionysus to look like.. well like a more feminine apollo i guess, beautiful in a gender non-comforming way.
Other Olympians could never comprehend why Dionysus chose this form when he could look like anything he wanted. In ancient times, he’d been famous for his youthful beauty that defied gender.
...
In retaliation, Dionysus had decided to look and act as ungodly as possible. He was like a child refusing to tuck in his shirt, comb his hair or brush his teeth, just to show his parents how little he cared.
every scene with nico at camp just BREAKS ME, i would throw in screenshots of every damn quote but unfortunately, as said above, cannot and would rather not type every one; we’ll start with, obviously apollo confirming to him that jason is dead.
He didn’t look angry exactly. He looked as if he’d been hit in the gut not just once but so many times over the course of so many years that he was beginning to lose perspective on what it meant to be in pain. He swayed on his feet. He blinked. Then he flinched, jerking his hands away from Meg’s as if he’d just remembered his own touch was poison.
ugh then will talking about how nico’s doing, confirming that he’s suffering with ptsd, mr d giving him advice, helping him sort though what voices in his head are real and which ones aren’t, then the paragraph that just recounts every horrific thing poor nico has been through, how will has to reassure him that he’s okay and ‘with friends’ when he wakes up after shadow travel
will’s kindness to apollo, buying him clothes, and apollo finding seymour the leopard’s head in his bed, put there by mr d aaaa AAAA A A A A A THE ORDINARY, EVERYDAY CAMP HALF BLOOD THINGS..
i could go on for years and years about how much i appreciate rachel having a big role in this book, and the visit to her apartment, everything, her art, the fact that she got what she wanted, she’s going to PARIS to study ART, she isn’t forced to be someone she’s not by her dad, and gets to be a big part of a demigod mission and not stand on the sidelines for once.
i love that her landscapes are still visions, that she still paints the quests demigods go on - the burning maze, jason’s funeral pyre, caligula’s ships; and how nico ~appreciates art~
‘And, hey, di Angelo -’ she pushed him playfully away from the canvas he’d been ogling - ‘don’t brush against the art! I don’t care about the paintings, but if you get any colour on you, you’ll ruin that whole black-and-white aesthetic you’ve got going.’
i. love. rachel.
WILL GLOWS!! THE HEADCANONS FROM LIKE FIVE YEARS AGO THAT YOU’D SEE FLOATING AROUND ABOUT HIM MANIPULATING LIGHT!! CONFIRMED!! CANON!! AMAZING
I AM OBSESSED WITH THE TROGS, I LOVE THEM, THEY ARE GREAT, not gonna lie, i was expecting something more dramatic and spooky with how worried will was and how dionysus was going.. visiting the cavern-runners isn’t ♫ good for your mental health ♫ but the little hat frog gremlins were a good addition. i like them very much and their funky little soup shenanigans. quoting the ghost king himself: trogs good. nice hats. (IM SORRY I KEEP MENTIONING HIM BUT I JUST) also how apollo starts wishing for breadsticks a s ajoke and theY STRAIGHT UP HAVE BREADSTICKS? HUH? WHERE DID THEY GET THE BREADSTICKS FROM??
yeah, i’m also still very much upset by every mention of jason grace, it’s funny how ever since his death in the burning maze i have grown to love him more and more and that’s not fun for me, for that boy to become one of my main comfort character’s and have his death and sacrifice and nobility mentioned every few chapters. i’m pretty sure i cried when he appeared to talk in apollo’s dreams, and this time the tears weren’t from the effort of keeping my eyes open and working for hours straight reading this book (i remember staying up until 2am to finish the sequel to beautiful, broken things, it was very much worth it)
‘All right, Jason. We miss you, though.’
ALSO. THE FACT THAT THIS KID. THIS CHILD. HAD TO THINK ‘BUT IF A HERO ISN’T READY TO LOSE EVERYTHING FOR A GREATER CAUSE, IS THAT PERSON REALLY A HERO?’ A KID ISN’T SUPPOSED TO THINK ABOUT THAT AND BE READY TO SACRIFICE THEMSELVES FOR THE GREATER GOOD,, i,, ugh,, he’s supposed to be finishing school and designing temples not being the perfect hero and soldier,, spain without the s,,
as @couldnt-think-of-a-funny-name said: ‘thinking about how ghost! Jason didn’t seem to understand why Apollo was so upset about his death because he’s been raised to believe a hero’s sacrifice is noble and his life doesn’t matter in the grand scheme and also if he doesn’t understand why the person who watched him get horrifically killed is so torn up over his death he probably doesn’t even realize his other friends are grieving him..’
IM SO UPSET THE ARROW OF DODONA IS DEAD D: IT WAS ONE OF MY FAVOURITE CHARACTERS ALL THE FUNNIEST MOMENTS WERE BECAUSE OF THAT ARROW AND IT'S DEATH WAS SO SAD WTH LIKE WE FIND OUT HOW USELESS THE ARROW FELT AND HOW THE GROVE OF DODONA ALL THOUGHT IT WOULD BE CRAP AND WOULD FAIL APOLLO AND THEN ONCE WE FEEL BAD FOR IT, IT DIES??
the entire python battle was pretty grim, there is a part of me that's like because this is the last book series i would have loved say the magnus chase and kane chronicles gang in a giant battle with everyone like the battle of manhattan but even more dramatic, but even so, i did appreciate that python battle and the whole almost-falling-into-the-depths-of-tartarus thing.
him talking to artemis was cool, but JESUS: 'I turned and strode out of my room, trying to recall how the god Apollo walked.' like that HURTS. it was such a huge culture shock for apollo to go throught this huge character arc and be so human and understand the pain of others, to be around gods again who are so.. apathetic. also, zeus. 'Interesting how he put that: I had done him proud. I had been useful in making him look good. My heart did not melt. I did not feel that this was a warm-and-fuzzy reconciliation with my father. Let's be honest: some fathers don't deserve that. Some aren't capable of it.'
OKAY OKAY SO THE END?? CHIRON TALKING TO A CAT (BAST) AND A SEVERED HEAD (MIMIR) ABOUT SHARED PROBLEMS WITHIN THE PANTHEONS!! WILL AND NICO RECEIVING A PROPHECY FROM RACHEL TO GO TO TARTARUS AND SAVE BOB!! THE HUNTERS OF ARTEMIS, INCLUDING THALIA AND REYNA BEING BEST FRIENDS (qpr.. qpr..) HUNTING THE TEUMESSIAN FOX!! PERCY, ANNABETH AND GROVER, THE ORIGINAL TRIO, GOING ON A CHAOTIC ROAD TRIP TOGETHER!! - SO MANY STAND-ALONE SET -UPS PFSJSJSJ
okay quick word on the reunions at the end: funny little elephant visitation program with livia and hannibal. love that for them. calypso and leo's relationship seems rocky and complicated, but that's to be expected, i think even if they do get properly back together again it might not last long, because it does pretty much feel like a teenage relationship where the two aren't very compatible, but we'll see. hazel and frank are so funny with their gold plated necklaces. lavinia - tap-dance icon. almost cried at the mention of jason's temple-extension plan again. percy not being sure about what he wants to do in college is accurate and i like that that's left to be up-for-interpretation (rick does THE MOST for the fanfic writers pfsjsj). i am OBSESSED with aeithales, like i hate deserts so the burning maze setting is not my favourite but GOD that HOUSE, the vibes are off-the-charts. i'd love a house made of living trees that's also a greenhouse filled with dryads. meg gets a unicorn. that is so great.
i kind of wish the book hadn't ended with 'Call on me. I will be there for you.' because every time I imagine the friends theme song and i don't think that's the vibe he was going for, BUT i do love him talking to meg, that was genuinely emotional - 'You'll come back?' she asked. 'Always,' I promised. 'The sun always comes back.' ; i really wish it had ended with that, but i guess apollo does tend to break fourth walls and talk to the readers, like a lot of the protagonists of riordanverse books.

Book Review: THE TOWER OF NERO (The Trials of Apollo #5)
***No spoilers until you go under the cut!***
After months in the human form of Lester Papadopoulos, the former god Apollo is nearing the end of his trials alongside the young Meg McCaffrey. All their adventures and misfortunes have landed them back in the place it started-- New York. Meg and Apollo must defeat the final, most powerful emperor of the Triumvirate, who also happens to be Meg’s manipulative stepfather. Meanwhile, Nico, Will, and Rachel have important roles to play as the final battle looms. Even if they can defeat Nero, a more terrible enemy awaits in the form of Python, Apollo’s nemesis. Still, if they can succeed, Apollo will finally be restored to godhood. But after everything he’s been through, going back to the way things were doesn’t sound so great anymore. Apollo and his friends will have to find a new way to make all the sacrifices and pain they’ve experienced and witnessed worth it. That is, if they can survive their final trial.
As both the culmination of The Trials of Apollo series and the Camp Half-Blood Chronicles, The Tower of Nero excels at bringing the complicated, moving themes of the saga into final, meaningful reckonings. Nero proves to be a chilling and impressive enemy who forces Apollo and Meg to put everything they’ve learned through their journey together to the ultimate test. New and old characters combine to see the story to its end, and long-time readers are rewarded with actualized development and a bittersweet farewell. The Tower of Nero is a fitting and robust conclusion that shines with all the heart, humor, and growth that makes this saga a worthy frontrunner in children’s literature.
SPOILER SECTIONS BELOW
Welcome!!!!!!!!! Y’all. Y’ALL. I am REELING. If you’ve been around here a while, you probably know I’ve been online here since 2012 (?????!!!!!) where I subjected by followers to weird takes and frantic excitement about the upcoming installments of Heroes of Olympus, then Trials of Apollo. Since I was ten years old, this story has been such a huge part of my life. Now I’m 22 (?????!!!!). So. How am I feeling? I’m feeling like I need to flip over every piece of furniture in my house. In a good way. Look. I gotta break this down into three parts because I’m the worst!
I. TRIALS & TRIBULATION
The Trials of Apollo, to me, felt like the inevitable conclusion to Percy Jackson and the Olympians & Heroes of Olympus. We went through two series where we intimately followed the lives of young demigods growing up through two brutal wars, dangerous quests, and personal reckonings. Gods certainly made appearances, and some were more helpful than others, but the message was always clear-- the demigods were on their own. Two wars fought, two wars won, and at what cost? For what change?
Bringing a god down to earth (both literally and metaphorically) is really the only way a story like this could be rounded out. Especially when the god in question is Apollo. He’s the son of Zeus, who punishes him by turning him mortal. This family set-up already has enormous implications in reference to the previous chain of mythological events: Zeus killed his father Kronos, Kronos killed his father Ouranos, etc.
Prophecy is also the scaffolding of this entire saga. Everything is dictated by it-- every quest relies on it, most of the demigods we meet are led by it, and the whole Greek/Roman world seems to build their lives around it. My point is, Apollo was a great character to use as the mouthpiece of this last series. He’s been present throughout the previous two series, and he’s relatively unaffected by the Greek/Roman divide. The enemy, the Triumvirate, is also an exciting antagonist-- they’ve fueled and funded the previous two wars, and their obsession with becoming “gods” is loaded with implications as Apollo races to return to his own status as a god.
Apollo himself is also a completely terrible being. From the first pages through his perspective, there’s certainly little sympathy or commiseration with our narrator. Apollo is many things: spoiled, petulant, selfish, and arrogant. He is not good, and now, he is no longer a god. Still, his voice and struggle remained compelling and engaging throughout the series.
His bond with Meg McCaffrey is, without a doubt, the emotional heart of the whole series. I think they both see aspects of themselves in each other, and it was a genius move to make her the stepdaughter of the enemy. Nero literally sent Meg to be Apollo’s controller and thought that she would easily bring him down; the fact that both these very troubled people cling to each other in the face of such manipulation and frightening circumstances-- and then repeatedly choose to fight their ways back to each other time and again-- is really what makes this series work so well.
With Meg and Apollo at the forefront, after The Hidden Oracle the series takes on something of a “tour” format. We discover new places and revisit old characters across the country, which was definitely exciting for long-time readers to see familiar faces undergo even more development. (This might just be me, but I don’t think ToA can really stand on its own without the worldbuilding/establishment of the first two series-- that’s not a knock on it, but so much of it picks up where the previous series left off, which might make it a disorienting read for someone new to the world.)
Of course, the obvious midpoint reversal of the series is the death of Jason Grace in The Burning Maze. A flip switches completely-- not just for Apollo, but for the whole cast. This is not an incident that just “happens” and is swept aside. In the final two installments, Jason is threaded throughout the story, showing how grief is never truly over. But his sacrifice saved everyone he loved, and had profound impacts on everyone he knew. As brutal as it was, I appreciated how Jason really changed everything through his choice.
By the time Apollo and Meg return to New York in The Tower of Nero, they are better, stronger versions of themselves. The things they once wanted-- godhood restored, or a father’s approval-- are no longer appealing. Their development (both individually and as friends) is utterly believable and hard-won. We see characters from The Hidden Oracle return changed, too. Losing Jason has dredged up dark feelings within Nico, Rachel is warding off the influence of Python in her mind, and Will’s healer heart is put to the test in yet another final battle. (Listen, this kid played instrumental roles in The Last Olympian, The Blood of Olympus, AND The Tower of Nero. The fate of the world really is in his capable, glow-in-the-dark hands.)
Together, Apollo and team venture into Manhattan for a very intense, exciting, and profound final reckoning with Nero. (CHAPTER 20, ANYONE????) Both Apollo and Meg, once and for all, come into their own and reclaim their power and independence. The pay-off is immaculate, and it’s jarring to remember the Apollo we once knew-- the easygoing one from The Titan’s Curse, the snobbish one from The Blood of Olympus, and the self-pitying one from The Hidden Oracle. His development throughout ToA is seamless and incredibly moving, and we’re left with a protagonist that we can truly, unequivocally root for and love.
II. HAVE YOU LEARNED?
When Nero is defeated, the real enemy still lurks. Apollo’s age-old nemesis, Python, has long haunted him. Their final reckoning is one-on-one, and after everything Apollo’s learned and been through, he goes into his last battle not necessarily caring whether he lives or dies-- he just knows Python must be defeated, no matter the cost. Don’t get me STARTED on his last conversation with Meg!!!!?????? (”Just come back to me, dummy.” I LOVE THEM)
So, yeah, I’m already crying at that point. Apollo (slowly regaining his godhood) goes into this completely by himself, assuming all risk and responsibility. He’s forced to sacrifice the Arrow of Dodona, and eventually chooses to sacrifice himself by flinging them both down to Tartarus. But we don’t stop there! Oh, no, we go all the way down to Chaos. The primordial soup of all the pantheons, all of existence. Python crumbles, and Apollo clings to the edge-- he clings to life.
This is it. This is the literal rock-bottom moment of the saga, and I’m completely unsure of how he’s getting out of this one. Who’s going to rescue him? What can he even do at this point? Genuinely, I had no idea where this was going-- and I never would have guessed that it would be the goddess Styx who shows up. She’s played an important, but also very minor, role in ToA. I was baffled at first-- I thought, what does she have to do with any of this? But then it ended up playing out in like the most breathtaking, moving way possible. It’s one of the most defining scenes of the entire 15 books to me.
She only asks him: “Have you learned?”
This is the goddess of promises and oaths. Since The Lightning Thief, we’ve seen how oaths are tossed around like confetti. Percy’s very existence (not to mention Thalia and Jason’s) is because of a broken promise. An oath to keep with a final breath is one of the revisited elements throughout the Heroes of Olympus series. Apollo makes willy-nilly promises in The Hidden Oracle, which he later regrets.
Then, at the end of everything, Styx only asks Apollo if he’s learned. All the talk of promises and oaths in this story doesn’t actually have anything to do with “keeping promises”-- certainly, so many promises are broken we can’t keep track. It all boils down to whether we learn from what we experience and use that to become better people moving forward. It’s about making sure we mean what we say and what we do. It’s about commitment and devotion to the people we love and the things we care about. Promises don’t matter. Only action does.
I can’t understate how thoroughly pleased I was that this was the final reckoning of the saga. It was an unexpected and completely profound moment, and such an important scene to use as the emotional climax of the book.
III. WHERE WE GO FROM HERE
After 15 years and 15 books, The Tower of Nero had to find a way to bring the saga to a close without nailing the coffin shut. More standalone novels are surely on the horizon (I’m looking at you, Nico and Will), but as a whole, this saga did need to come to a satisfying end.
Let’s pick up after Apollo is restored to godhood. He wakes up to his sister Artemis, and the very first thing he does? After finally returning to his true form, the thing he’s relentlessly yearned for the whole series? He just breaks down sobbing. He’s miserable. There’s no relief or joy in the realization that he’s once again an Olympian.
I’m always a sucker for the trope of “Character does everything possible to reach Goal only to realize that Goal isn’t actually what they want or need at all”, so of course, I was moved to see Apollo learn that he doesn’t actually care much about whether he’s a god or a human anymore. (In fact, he later remarks that he envies Lu’s new ability to grow old and age alongside Meg and her foster siblings.)
I was doubly-moved that Apollo’s restoration to godhood was not an action on Zeus’s part. From what little context we get (a lot happens “off screen” and even Apollo isn’t sure), it appears that Apollo either reclaimed his own godhood through sheer force of will to return from Chaos and reunite with his friends, and/or Styx aided him. But it seems obvious Zeus wasn’t involved, which has HUGE implications for the power structure of the Olympians moving forward.
A lot of us, myself included, had certain expectations for how Apollo’s inevitable reunion with Zeus and the rest of the Olympians would go. I, for one, was excited to see Apollo either tell off his father, or possibly assume a position as the new Camp Half-Blood director or New Rome’s pontifex maximus. Instead, we got a somewhat quiet, but incredibly tense interaction between all the Olympians. The closest thing to an outburst is actually between Hera and Zeus, as she tells him off for not mourning his son Jason, as Apollo did. (Dare I say....I liked Hera for a moment?) (ALSO, I’m fully on-board with the theory that Zeus did not intervene in Jason’s death as a punishment for Jason publicly calling him “unwise” in The Blood of Olympus.)
The whole scene reads as a powder keg. Already, it’s established that Apollo, Artemis, and Dionysus (and possibly even Athena and Hera) have no illusions of Zeus’s grandeur. They do not view him as family, or even as a leader. He’s simply just the one with enough power to punish the rest of them when they get “out of line”.
Apollo began naming Zeus as his abuser fairly early on in the series. Perhaps witnessing the way Meg thinks and speaks about her stepfather Nero made this clear for him. In either case, he begins to explicitly mirror the very same advice he gives Meg in dealing with her abuser: distance yourself from the abusive person/situation, and accept that tyrants do not change and it is not your responsibility to attempt to make them “see the light”. Thus, Apollo makes no appeal or argument to Zeus– he understands by then that it’d be fruitless. Instead, he’s concentrating his energy on doing everything he can do with what he has; he’s committed to being a protector and friend of demigods, and he sees that other gods are beginning to (if not already) see Zeus’s wrongness. (More on this here.)
Was it what I expected going into the book? Nope. But I have to admit that it was really exciting to see Zeus try to hide the very real fear of realizing that his son Apollo is no longer afraid of him, and is quite possibly more powerful than him, too. Apollo switches gears entirely away from Zeus, and focuses his energy back on the friends he’s made and the children he has. It’s a refreshing reminder that it’s often more productive to concentrate on helping others instead of harming those who harm us.
That being said, I would have liked a few paragraphs or pages discussing what practical differences there will be for the lives of young demigods in the wake of this change. I understand that might not have worked given the very condensed timeline post-returning-to-godhood (the story ends literally the same day or day after), but I do hope and believe that Apollo’s transformation is going to change the way demigods perceive gods-- and what they will expect of gods in the future. Just look at how Apollo is received by the campers at CHB. They’re ecstatic to see him. They think of him as a hero. Apollo is coming back just to help and spend time with his kids, his friends, and the campers, and he’s going to keep coming back. The other gods are certainly going to feel some pressure to follow suit.
Speaking of Apollo’s reunions...shall we?
I loved that we got to see all the main-players one last time. Mimicking the “tour format” of the series, we get to watch Apollo catch up with his loved ones, who helped him learn how to be a better person throughout his trials.
It was sad, but reassuring, to watch Nico come to terms with Jason’s death. I like how he outlined the differences between Hazel’s and Jason’s deaths, and why he isn’t interfering out of respect for Jason. Watching Jason appear to Apollo (ambiguously as a ghost or as a figment of Apollo’s dream-imagination) was another moving reminder of the stark differences in the ways that different demigods prioritize and think about what it is to be a hero. Jason’s idea and Percy’s idea, for instance, are super different because of the way they were raised. Percy would put anything on the line for his family and friends; so would Jason, of course, but he also has a much broader view of what’s worth sacrificing your life for...which is admirable in ways, but also painfully sad, since a lot has to change in order for Jason’s death to carry weight. Over the course of the last two books, I think it’s very safe to say Jason’s death did change just about everything for the people who knew and loved him, and even those who didn’t.
Whew. Okay, back to Camp Half-Blood. Nico and Will are clearly now very comfortable with each other, and it’s refreshing to see how they both watch out for each other and bring out the best in one another. I’m excited for their inevitable solo book, but regardless, it’s good to see Nico getting the help he needs (from his own experiences, from Dionysus, Will, etc), and for Rachel to get some distance from her terrible parents by living out her art student dreams in Paris.
Then, we drop by the Waystation. I simply cannot get over the fact that Calypso is at BAND CAMP. Anyway, it’s unsurprising to find out that she and Leo are still “complicated”, but I’m glad she’s experiencing the highs and lows of mortal life, and that Leo is working on helping out vulnerable youth (and has two mom figures in his life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!). Glad we get to see Thalia and Reyna both happy and healthy, too.
Next up, Camp Jupiter and New Rome. LOVE that Hazel and Frank have both reclaimed the curses that haunted them since The Son of Neptune. They really both did just...like...basically die to bring down the Big Bad and then come back better than ever. (Side note: I still obviously have issues with the fact that Hazel is SO YOUNG! There was no reason for her not to be 15/16 like the rest of the Argo 2 crew! Ugh.)
Anyway, then we say goodbye to Percy and Annabeth. Except for the annoying continuity error in terms of the timeline of them learning about Jason, I really really really loved this parting moment with them. I know some readers wanted Percy and Annabeth to stay in New York, but it always felt very natural and meaningful for me that they’d want to relocate to New Rome. That was always the Big Dream for most of Heroes of Olympus, and it makes sense to me that they’d choose to live somewhere designed for demigods to actually live and grow old and raise families. Besides, I’m quite certain they’ll frequently be visiting New York. I digress.
It was super bittersweet to see these two finally off on their own (and basically living together, as Apollo teasingly implies) going to college! Definitely a huge sigh of relief and satisfaction after following all their exploits since they were twelve. I’m so glad we get to see them (all things considered) happy and excited for their new life together. They certainly stepped back in this series, as they deserved. But they still lose Jason, and that’s something that weighs heavily on them and likely always will. Apollo calls Jason “the best of us”, and I don’t think that use of “us” is lost on Percy, Annabeth, or anyone-- Apollo’s identity and alignment is with them now, which will hopefully lead to positive change.
Then, simultaneously the saddest and happiest (?) reunion-- with Piper. This was obviously really heavy, since the last time Apollo sees her is in the wake of Jason’s death. For me, I’m very proud and excited by the fact that Piper is the only character who basically forges a whole new life (outside of the sphere of the Olympians) for herself. She’s far from other demigods and gods, and is committed to reconnecting with her mortal family and making a beautiful life. She has a new friend, too, which is absolutely awesome. (I mean, we all KNEW, right? But it’s really great to see this confirmed on-page.) When Piper told Apollo that he did right by Jason, I definitely lost it. And I also just really loved the final beat with her-- Apollo’s stammering a goodbye, but Piper’s already turned around to walk back to her new friend and her new life.
The final farewell, of course, went to Meg McCaffrey. She’s reclaimed Aeithales, and is now foster-sibling-extraordinaire by rescuing Nero’s other adopted demigods and giving them a new chance. Meg’s really matured and grown into such a kind and strong leader, but it was super bittersweet to see how much she still values Apollo. Their reunion just about broke me. They share a bond that no one else will ever understand, and they brought each other out of darkness that nearly ended them both. I literally can’t think of a better final dialogue than what they share:
You’ll come back?
Always. The sun always comes back.
I’m fine!!!
Anyway, this brings me to the closing lines of the story. Just as Percy opens The Lightning Thief by directly addressing the reader, Apollo closes The Tower of Nero by bidding farewell to us.
Call on me. I will be there for you.
On so many levels, this line works really well as the ending. For me, and I imagine for you too if you’re reading this, these 15 books are a pillar of our childhoods. We grew up alongside these characters, and found enormous excitement and identity and magic in these pages. The story may have come to a close, but it lives on within us-- it’s something we can return to time and again for enjoyment and understanding.
More than anything, this story pulled off something I didn’t really know was possible: it makes me feel genuinely and enthusiastically glad to be human, no matter how strange or hard it gets.
____________
My fifth-grade teacher assigned The Lightning Thief as mandatory reading when I was ten years old. I picked it up reluctantly, but from the first lines, I just completely fell into this story. Twelve years since that assignment, I’m now a traditionally-published author myself...writing about what else but mythology, of course. These books saw me from elementary school all the way to post-college life. It’s hard to imagine where I’d be without them-- certainly, I’d never have achieved my lifelong dream of becoming an author, nor would I have found such an incredible online community like the one I’ve found here. I consider myself extremely lucky to have grown up alongside these characters and their incredible story.
I know we’ve likely got more standalones in this world to come, but this is still the end of the saga. I’m sad to see it come to a close, but I’m so ecstatic with the send-off we got, and I’m excited to let the story settle and become a part of me-- something that will always affect how I see the world, something that reminds me of why I write, and something that’s always there to welcome me home.

Let Molly Punch Wolverine: Why I’m worried about X-Men appearance in Runaways
I want to preface this by saying that I have strong trust in Rainbow Rowell and while I am behind her series due to financial and pandemic related reasons, I trust her to deliver the best story she is allowed to. The worries I express below come from the fact I do not trust X-Men editorial and Jonathan Hickman enough to believe they will allow her to tell the best story.
The way I see it, Runaways are the quintessential Millenial comic in that it perfectly captures Millenial generation’s disillusionment with world and society built by Baby Boomers. A disillusionment that was to be expected in face of failiure of American defenses to prevent 9/11, the government and mass media wholeheartely embracing islamophobia and homophobia in it’s wake and American war crimes in Afghanistan and Iraq, on top of myriad other problems that were already present in the 00s and only got worse as we went ahead.
This is not seen just in the core premise of the original series, the idea that the parents kids are taught to respect and look up to are actively evil and damning the world for their own benefit. But also in the general potrayal of adults and adult superheroes in the series, who are mostly useless or outright malicious in case of Doc Justice. Sole exception being somewhat Spider-Man, who himself is portrayed as having gone through what Runaways have and so having insight and empathy other adults lack.
While that theme has become more gray over the years, as Runaways managed to gain a good footing with teachers and students of Avengers Academy alike, and Nico and Victor were on Avengers offshot teams, even then it was clear that the older heroes are not these perfect ideals too look up to, but flaved in their own way. Entire Avengers A.I. is about fixing one of Hank Pym’s screwups and A-Force’s premise is the team doubles as a support group, every member having gone through traumatic experience in the past and being on different stages of healing process (not to mention how it crashed and burned due to mistakes made by Carol in Civil War II). Even X-Men themselves started as outright antagonistic to Runaways under BKV. And then uder Yost went into the mutual “MAYBE they aren’t THAT bad” relationship with Runaways. Every meeting so far had Molly punch Wolverine.
In current series most of the team moved from teenagers to young adults and their experiences still reflect those of late Millenials. There is this feeling in current series of powerlessness, Runaways making it to the adulthood only to find all it gets you is more problems and all ability to fix the world have been systematically wrestled from your hands by the very people who broke it just so that you cannot fix their mess. It is a story about trying to live in a messed up world with that realization and how your found family can help you carry on whatever it will throws at you. I think in this way is why I can turn a blind eye on things like Nico in Strange Academy - it makes sense she would want to at least try to help kids who are going through what she did to not have as much a hard time. And, you know, Strange didn’t invite A NAZI WHO ACTUALLY WORKED AT AUSCHWITZ WITH MENGELE to help him run the school.
I do not beleive X-Men editorial can play along with that. Right now X-Men and their fandom are at the height of drinking their own kool-aid, portraying their stupid sex island as the msot perfect and best thing ever, to the point they ignore the blatantly fashy things happenning like making up new minority groups (precogs and clones) to oppress, or abovementioned inviting of Nazis, mass murderers and islamophobic crusaders who want to “take back Jerusalem”. They are so into the “mutants are a minority” metaphor that they outright demand that every other book touching on it portray negatively anyone who does not immediatelly bows down at their feet. Something we have seen in X-Men interactions with Fantastic Four, where Sue Storm’s legitimate complaints about X-Men’s current position are caricaturized to cast her in a “uniformed homophobic mom” stereotype just to keep the metaphor working. Even in Fantastic Four’s own book. In wake of this I can somewhat see why the infamous “Franklin is not a mutant” retcon took place.
I cannot beleive that current X-office could allow X-Men to be shown in a way that adheres to themes of Runaways. I mean for Pete’s sake, look at their treatment of New X-Men Academy X - another Millenial at heat series. And another one that tackles disillusionment of that generation with Baby Boomers’ run world with its own 9/11 equivalent in form of a terrorist attack that killed many of its students and traumatized the rest. It is a known secret editor Jordan White considers this a “mistake” because it made old X-Men look bad. And under him in particular X-Books had a history of undermining and derailing NXM kids to show them as inexperienced, dumb kids who never had any hardships and do not know what it really takes to be an X-Man, who see it as all the glamour and no work. All in spite of the fact they may have suffered more than all their elders except Karma, writers’ favorite punching bag. Now the books are outright lobotomizing the surviving kids while bringing back dead ones not to explore any stories with them or how such return could affect the ressurected and their friends alike and maybe allow a possibility to heal. No, this is done solely to erase that massacre from ever happenning because it make Jordan White’s heroes look bad.
I’m supposed to believe this editorial will allow Cult Sex Island to be shown as imperfect or not a place that would “obviously” be much better for Molly? That it will allow Runaways to not be cast as “bigots” for not wanting to handle Molly to “real family” (as determined by genetics) same way X-Men treated Fantastic Four? As things stand now X-Men, a franchise and fandom that is ever entitled to special treatment to the point it cried Marvel wants to bury them when having “only” four books a month. One that has demanded for Kamala Khan to be handed over to them and made a mutant just to spite Inhumans over some perceived slights. A fandom that has wished death members of every superhero team with a mutant who refuses to hand the mutant over and celebrated brutal murder of a kid with a reprogrammed Sentinel. This blind entitlement is not jsut a fandom thing but also infects creatives working on it. Need I remind you how Jason Aaron made a big deal out of making Firestar join the X-Men? He took a character who canonically didn’t care much for the team and wanted to do her own thing and retconned her to be a total fangirl who dreamed of joining but was never before truly “worthy” of this “honor”. Right now we have more and more evidence every franchise interacting with X-Men needs to bow down and play a secondary role to it. but the respect here is a one-way street, Jonathan Hickman outright complains about having to adhere to work of other writers. I have absolutely zero trust that editorial will not try to force the story in Runaways to also be worshiping the ground X-men walk on. Worst case scenario they insert themselves like they did with Fantastic Four, becoming recurring plot thread and casting rest of Molly’s family as evil for not wanting her to join what is effectively a cult.
I wish I’m being wrong here. I do not want Runaways to become a glorified advertisement to a bigger franchise that has become souless and vile and whose fans turned into bullies. I have faith in Rainbow Rowell but that faith is outweighted by my distrust in Jordan White and Jonathan Hickman and their egoes. I hope I’m wrong. All I want is a story that ends with X-men fucking off and Molly staying with her real family, the Runaways. And of ocurse, her punching Wolverine. Which I do not trust White and Hickman to allow either.
PS: Some of you are probably already typing some sort of “if you don’t like the X-men, just don’t read them” response. To you I say: I would be glad too. Too bad they keep forcing themselves into things I actually like. Like a mold. Which is a good metaphor for what this old, gross thing the franchise has become.

The Best Present - A Little Christmas Story
I wish we were kissing under mistletoe
The stars on the sky just can't match your glow
Now I can't wait 'til you're by my side
We'll be warm by the fire all night, oh
I wanna hold you while the bells are all ringing
Want you to be here while the angel's singing
Days are perfect when I got you near
My only wish is you here
Christmas Without You - Ava Max
The snow was slowly falling in big white flakes to the ground and covered everything with a beautiful thick coat. The streets were empty and everything was peaceful silent. Percy was shivering from the cold and pulled his scarf a bit tighter. He was running late as usual. Leo invited all of them for Christmas eve to his home like he did every year. He loved the tradition. And the food. And the decorations. And the fact that mostly everyone of their friends was able to come. It was far too seldom that all of them saw each other.
Percy went a bit faster which wasn't easy because the floor was icy and slippery and he was carrying his Secret Santa present for Annabeth in both hands and balanced the blue homemade chocolate chip cookies from his mother on top of it.
He almost made it safe to Leo's front door. Almost. On the path to the house was ice under the snow and Percy slipped, pressing the gift and the cookies to his chest, trying to catch himself. "Woah! Watch out!" Jason shouted before he grabbed him in the last second and made him standing still again. "Gotcha" he chuckled.
"Oh gods thank you. You saved me and the cookies." Percy said breathless.
"For the sake of the cookies look where you're going the next time." Jason joked.
"Yes... You're right. The next time I just fly to the door. No big deal." Percy replied sarcastically looking into Jason's bright blue eyes. They sparkled in the Christmas lights and reflected all the different colours. Percy can't help it and a goofy grin spread over his face which Jason mirrored. The snowflakes has covered Jason's blond hair, which made it look white and his cheeks where light red from the cold. This was one of these moments Percy got totally lost. He just want to take a picture and framed it that's how beautiful Jason looks in these light.
He was shaking his head to clear his mind, he was getting creepy again. He really had fallen for Jason in the last year. There were these moments when they looked at each other a second too long or when they touched accidentally. But it never happend more than this. They never cross the line that would end their friendship. Percy still waited for the perfect moment to confess his love. He was to afraid that he just interpreted too much in their interactions. Maybe Jason was just too dense to get the hints Percy dropped time by time. Maybe Percy was just wishing that Jason always seemed to making excuses to touch him or be in his near.
Jason cleared his throat. "Maybe we should go inside."
It took it's time till Percy realised what Jason said. " Yeah I guess so." But both didn't move. They still locked their eyes, smiling like idiots and no one want to look away first. It hit him like a sudden and blinding realization and it dawned to him. This moment seemed to be perfect. "Uhm, Jason? I have to tell you something." Suddenly he was getting really nervous. What if Jason didn't feel the same? Would he believe him? What if he even laugh at him? What if Percy was about to destroy their friendship right now? Maybe he should wait with it after the party. Then he wouldn't ruin it by make it awkward at least. He felt like a coward. He just was searching for excuses.
"What now? Say what's on your mind." Jason face turned serious.
He got an urgent feeling of throwing up. "It's freaking cold and I'm freezing. Let's go inside. Why doesn't the cold bother you too?" He said laughing. Hopefully Jason didn't hear that it was forced. Yep, he definitely was a coward.
They knocked at the with ornaments decorated door and Hazel opened it. The smell of pine, cinnamon and hot chocolate filled the cold evening air and Christmas songs are played in the background. "Ah there you are, we're finally complete. You two are late. What happened?"
"Nothing" Percy said a little bit too fast as he entered the house, hoping that everyone attributed his red face to the change from the cold outside to the warm inside.
"Percy's just being clumsy not more", Jason laughed and entered the house as well.
Both took off their thick coats and scarfs and hang them on the wardrobe. "Nice sweater Percy" Jason teased him.
"I can only give that back." Two years ago Jason had Percy as his secret santa and he got the ugliest sweater Percy could found. It was baby blue with lighting bolts on it which actually can blink. The next year Percy got his payback. Jason bought him a green sweater with tiny waves on it. There were also a button which caused an awful sung christmas song when it was pressed. Percy secretly loved it.
Hazel led them to living room. They were welcomed by 'Merry Christmas Everyone' that was blasted by Leo's sound system. Percy couldn't stop to be surprised how much efford Leo put in the decorations every year. And he tops himself year by year. There was a huge christmas tree with every kind of decoration you could put on. The whole room had it's own christmas themed light installation and Percy really become worried that all of this would end in a short circuit.
The whole crew was spread out in the room. Frank, Reyna and Piper were sitting on the couch chatting and eating from the with sweets filled plates in front of them. Leo and Annabeth standing in the corner bowed over some cables and it seems like he was explaining how he managed the power distribution. Grover, Will and Rachel were standing in front of the music system singing along. Only Thalia wasn't there. She was on the other side of the country and didn't make it this year.
Jason and Percy put their presents under the tree while Hazel took the cookies and put them in the kitchen. As she came back she shoved Nico in the room with the words "You can't stay in there forever." "But there I don't have to deal with all these happy people." He mumbled, but everyone knows that Nico secretly was enjoying the Christmas Partys.
"I'm going to grab us some hot chocolate" Jason declared and vanished in the kitchen. He came back with two steaming cups. Percy has joined their friends on the couch and so did Jason. As he recognized that there were only blue marshmallows in his cup, a smile stole on his face again. He was always smiling when Jason was around.
And so the time passed away with a lot of laughter, crooked sung songs and many happy faces. Even Nico smiled from time to time and everyone was filled with love for their friends.
After everyone had handed over the presents, Percy just leaned back and enjoyed the scene which was chaotic as usual. Annabeth already has started to read in one of the books Percy got her, while Leo was leaning over her shoulder and pointed at something in the book. His socks he got from Grover were flashing like a Christmas tree. Frank with his new purple sweater from Reyna was about to put a necklace around Hazel's neck. Jason gave Nico a new necklace as well and Rachel got a new sketchbook set from Piper and was about to draw her sitting under the Christmas tree. She was reading the voucher she got from Will and Reyna got a new pair of dog leashes and collars from Annabeth. Will was presenting his new shirt from Hazel which fits the one Nico was wearing. Rachel's gift for Grover was a new pair of shoes she has customized. Leo tried to get Thalia home for Christmas but it wasn't possible so he organized a video call for Jason as a compromise solution. And Percy has to keep himself from starring at Jason who was laughing with his sister. Little tears of joy in the corner of his eyes. He himself received new gloves and a matching scarf from Nico.
He was so happy that he can count so many people as his friends. No they were more than friends. This was his second family. And he knew that everyone was feeling the same.
After some time has passed, Jason ended the call and looked a bit sad for a moment, but quickly recovered. His sister was the only one left from his family and it was the first time he was supposed to be alone on Christmas and new year. Percy leaned over to Jason and whispered: "Don't tell anyone but remember me to give you your Christmas gift when we are leaving." Maybe it was against the rules of Secret Santa but he couldn't stop himself to get Jason a present as well.
"That's not fair! I haven't a present for you." He whispered back.
"Nah it's fine. It didn't cost anything so it's totally okay"
"So you made it by yourself? Now I want to know what it is."
"You will see." Percy made his troublemaker smile and looked into Jason prying eyes.
"Hey you two lovebirds, " Reyna interrupted their eye contact with a snap and both turned their heads towards her, "I've asked if you want to play charade with us but you seem to be busy."
"No no. I would love to play! What about you Jase?"
"I'm in!"
Laughter filled the house and in the end nobody knew who won.
It was late. Very very late. Well past midnight. Maybe Percy fall asleep once or twice, he wasn't really sure by himself. "Maybe I should go home soon", he declared with a yawn, his head resting on Jason's shoulder.
"Yeah me too." Jason shifted a bit, so he can look in Percy's tired eyes. "I drive you home. It's cold and dark outside and I don't accept a 'No'."
Percy knew he didn't have a chance to deny. Jason could be very stubborn when it come to situations like this. So he didn't resist and as a bonus he has time to give Jason his gift. After a lot of hugs they were driving to Percy's.
"So the present I was talking about... You still alone on Christmas?" Percy asked softly.
"Yeah but it doesn't matter I'm fine, just having myself a little Merry Christmas you know" Everybody would believe him but not Percy. Jason's voice was a tiny bit rougher than normal.
He could feel his heart nervously beating in his chest. "You can stay with us. I asked mom already and she said she would be very happy if you would join us."
"No I can't." Percy felt his heart stutter. He planned this since he knew that Thalia wouldn't make it. Nobody should be alone. Especially not Jason.
"Why not?"
"It's your family and I don't have any presents. I can't crash Christmas without presents."
Percy let out a released laugh. "That's what you are worried about? Well than you can come with me. I bought too many gifts anyways. We just change the tags. And for me it's really enough when you celebrate with us. How about that?"
A defeated smile stole on Jason's face. "Only if I can give you your money back."
"Alright. If you want to drive home first, you need to pack your things, you can stay at my home. It's already late and so you can't oversleep. " in the joy of Jason saying Yes he invited him spontaneously but regretted it right after saying it. He didn't want to overdo it so hopefully it wasn't a big deal for Jason.
"Unlike you I never oversleep but I would love to stay at your's"
Percy looked with a wide smile outside the car window. This was one was on it's best way to be the best Christmas ever.
As they were finally parking by Percy's mom it's started to snow again. Luckily they didn't have to drive anymore. His house wasn't decorated like Leo's but at least there were Christmas lights and one look at Jason was enough to be reminded of earlier this day. His eyes, it were always his eyes that made Percy fall in love with him a little more. And the way he was smiling at this moment brightened his heart. “You know this is one of the best presents I ever could get? I thought I would be lonely on Christmas." There were tears in his eyes and without thinking Percy hugged him.
"Nobody deserves to be alone if they doesn't want to. And I am so happy you are here with me."
"Thank you." Jason voice cracked and he cleard his throat. Percy let go and before he could start a second try to confess his love he pulled out his key awkwardly and said: "You don't have to thank me. But I'm freezing, let's get inside." At which point in his life he turned in this little coward? The problem was Jason was way too important for him and he didn't want to lose him.
"I guess my family already fall asleep, so we have to be silent." Percy whispered as he opened the door. They entered the house and walked as quiet as possible through the hallway till Jason suddenly stopped.
"You okay?" Percy turned around an looked at him. He seemed to be a bit nervous. Maybe he was afraid what his family could say.
After not answering his question Percy tried to calm Jason. "Hey, you don't have to be afraid or something. My family knows that you are coming with me. And especially Estelle is glad to see you."
"Yeah I know, that's not the problem."
"Then what is it?" Percy started to getting nervous too. What if Jason didn't want to be here and was just too polite to deny and now he regretted it? But Jason seemed so happy to be here a few seconds ago. So what was making him so nervous?
"Look up." He didn't suspect this reply at all and look at the ceiling in confusion.
A mistletoe. There was a mistletoe above him and while Percy still was wondering why it was there, because his mom never hung up one, Jason take a step towards Percy. Percy slowly look back to Jason. He could feel his heart beating in his chest. Jason was starring on his lips. He couldn´t breathe. He couldn´t think. With a glance in his eyes Jason made sure if Percy was okay with this and finally overcome the last few centimeters. Cross the line of their friendship.
And then he kissed him.
Once, twice and then a third time. They couldn´t stop and soon it happend that Jsaon was pressing Percy against the wall. It taste like Christmas and chocolate and it felt like finally coming home.
They only broke away from each other to catch a breath. Jason leaned his forehead against Percy's, while their hearts were racing, both with a big smile on their face and a little bit of disbelive in their eyes. Like this was a wonderful dream. "Merry Christmas, Percy." Jason whispered.
Percy was way too overwhelmed to reply but one glance was enough to know this wasn't just a kiss under the mistletoe. This kiss was the certainty that his feelings wasn't one-sided. This kiss was all he ever wanted. And this kiss was the best present he ever could get for Christmas.
#jercy#percy and jason#jason and percy#jason grace#percy jackson#and yes I still don't know how to use the tags correctly 😂#There is a chance that I wrote the first 1000 words in the end of May and yes I listen to Christmas music in the summer and I'm proud of it

Aspects & Fanfics Ep. 52: The Truth Is Revealed - Nico’s Reaction
I thought I wouldn’t have this ready on time, as for some reasons, this week has been kind of a torture for me and I found it really hard to find the motivation to write. Fortunately, I managed to overcome that sentiment and get in a better mood with enough time to finish this episode. We are slowly approaching the ending of season 2 of this fanfic. We’re not there yet, but we’re coming. I hope that the ending is satisfactory for everyone, when it comes. And with this said, I leave you with the episode. Until next time.
SYNOPSIS: Thomas has decided to tell Nico the truth about the existence of the Sanders Sides, as they need his help to save Dillon from the Paladin. However, he doesn’t know how Nico’s going to react and is afraid to lose him if he gets too scared of Thomas’ secret life with the Sides.
WARNINGS: A lot of romance and words of love, mainly from Thomas to Nico.
EPISODE INDEX
[Thomas is nervously looking at the door. Virgil is next to him, both are sitting on the couch]
THOMAS: I’m so scared, Virge… So scared…
VIRGIL: I’m sorry, Thomas, I can’t help it… I know what we’re doing is the right thing to do, but still, I can’t help giving you this nervousness…
THOMAS: Nico could be here any moment… And even though I’ve rehearsed and rehearsed what I’m going to tell him, something tells me that in the critical moment, my mind’s gonna go blank and I’m not gonna know what to say… For starters, I don’t even know if he’s angry at me over the abrupt ending of our date last time. He said he isn’t, but maybe he was just being nice… Maybe I’ve already blew it up and there’s nothing I can do already, so being so nervous would be silly in that case… and if he doesn’t love me anymore, my life is gonna be miserable, ‘cause I know I’ll never find a guy like him again, and I don’t know if…
VIRGIL: Whoa, whoa, Thomas, please! You’re going so fast in your nervousness I can’t even follow your rhythm! Seriously, what is my purpose in this Mind Palace if you already take all the work yourself faster than I do? Gosh!
THOMAS: Sorry, Virge…
[intro sequence]
[someone knocks at the door]
THOMAS: Oh, gosh, he’s here… Okay, don’t panic… It’s only Nico, your boyfriend… but for how long? Sush! Sush… Virge, you’re invisible for him, right?
VIRGIL: Yes, I am, but I’d wish to be invisible in your thoughts right now too… Good luck, Thomas.
[Thomas sighs]
THOMAS: What will be, will be… Let’s go.
[Thomas opens the door. Nico is there, smiling at Thomas]
THOMAS: Hi, Nico… Gosh, your sole presence already makes my day brighter. Come in.
NICO: Thank you, Thomas. I love you too.
[Nico kisses Thomas on the cheek and gets into the living room followed by Thomas. He sits on the couch… right on Virgil]
VIRGIL: What the… whoops!
[however, Nico goes through him as if Virgil was made of air, not feeling his presence at all. Virgil quickly stands up and sits down on another couch. Thomas looks at the scene a little nervous but quickly puts himself together]
NICO: You said you wanted to see me, and something tells me it could be important. What is it? Oh, but most importantly, how are you feeling today? The other day, I left a little worried. I kept thinking I should have stayed in case you got worse so I could take you to the hospital if need be.
THOMAS: Oh, I’m fine, Nico, don’t worry. It was just some feeling of nausea I suddenly had. It left me an hour or so later after I took a chamomile tea. It was a bummer that it ruined our date when everything was going so perfect.
NICO: Yeah, if I could have, I would have stayed all night with you. I was enjoying your company so much, I didn’t want it to end at all…
THOMAS: [silly smile] Me neither… It’s funny how we only met last Christmas, a few weeks ago, and yet it’s like I’ve shared my whole life with you and I couldn’t remember how I used to live before you came into my life. Does it happen the same to you?
NICO: Yes… yes, it does. But for sure you didn’t call me here just to tell me words of love, Thomas. I mean I could hear them and tell them back to you all day long, but you had something to tell me. What is it? Like I said, something in your voice on the phone made me think it was something important. What’s the matter?
THOMAS: [nervous] Yes… okay… Nico, you better sit down because what I’m gonna tell may shock you…
NICO: Thomas… I’m already sitting down. You are so nervous… and you’re making me nervous. Please, calm down. Whatever it is, I can take it.
THOMAS: You’re right, sorry… It’s something to be nervous about, because it’s something I’ve told very few people in this world. Which reminds me to tell you that everything I’m gonna tell you must be kept as a secret. No one must ever know. I count on your discretion.
NICO: Of course, Thomas, you have my word. Whatever it is, no one will know your secret through me, I promise.
THOMAS: Thank you. You see, it’s something that has happened to me since I was a little boy. I have… a gift, you might call it? Even though sometimes I’ve been tempted to call it a curse, I still call it a gift, because it has given to me a group of friends no one could ever be closer to. More than friends, they are a family, a family that has been with me, by my… side… since I was like three years old.
NICO: I don’t understand.
THOMAS: I know, it’s very hard to understand, so I’ll start from the beginning, although I fear I’m going to confuse you a lot. You see, there are some people in this world whose brain works in some particular pattern of brainwaves, a very rare pattern, that triggers a very special reaction, you could almost call it… magic. These people have the power of summoning the different aspects of their personality that normally reside in their brain as brainwaves and turn them into real people. Then they can sustain conversations with them about whatever is bothering them in their daily life, about any complicated dilemma… anything. Even more than that. These people have the power of creating a whole alternate dimension from these same brainwaves which act as a portal to said dimension, which hold everything that person is, has been or will be, in what regards to their personality, way of thinking and so on.
NICO: You are talking about “some people”, are you trying to tell me that…
THOMAS: Yes, Nico. I am one of said people. I don’t know why, I didn’t choose it or know how it works exactly, but I have that gift, and the aspects of my personality I summon, they are called the Sanders Sides, who live in the Mind Palace, the dimension I talked about.
[there’s a short silence before Nico speaks]
NICO: Thomas… are you drunk?
THOMAS: I’ve never been more sober in my life Nico. I expected you wouldn’t believe me, but I swear, for the love I feel for you, that what I’m saying is true.
NICO: This… I can’t believe all of this and you shouldn’t be surprised at all. All of this just looks like taken from a fairy tale, and I don’t believe in fairy tales. Thomas, please don’t take offense at what I’m going to say, but I think you may have spent so much time alone that perhaps you have started mixing reality and fiction. I have seen your YouTube series, Sanders Sides, and I recognize what you have just described to me as taken from that series. Yes, perhaps it happened to you as it happened to Alonso Quijano, who went crazy over reading to many chivalric books and thought he was Don Quijote de La Mancha and a vulgar woman from the next town a fair maiden named Dulcinea. That… or you’re playing a practical joke on me, I don’t know…
THOMAS: As I said, I didn’t expect you to believe me the first time I told you. No one I ever told this believed me on the first try… until I they saw proof. I anticipated I’d have to prove to you that I’m not insane.
NICO: Prove to me? What do you mean by that?
THOMAS: As I told you, the Sanders Sides are real physical entities surged from my imagination. Usually they live in my head, in the Mind Palace, but when they want, they can get out at will and wander through the real world, or as they call it, the “outer world”. They can make themselves invisible at will or shapeshift into any form, human or not, so as not to attract attention. Believe it or not, one of my Sides is in this room right at this moment.
[Virgil looks at Thomas]
VIRGIL: Should I, Thomas?
THOMAS: In a minute, Virgil, when I give you the sign.
NICO: Who are you talking to? Who is Virgil? You’re scaring me. Perhaps… perhaps I should go…
THOMAS: No, please. Don’t go, at least give me the opportunity to prove you that I’m not crazy.
NICO: [standing up, walking to the middle of the living room] Then what are you waiting for, Thomas? You said they can make themselves visible at will? [spinning around trying to find Virgil’s position to no avail, while Virgil stands up too and slowly walks towards him] Well then, Virgil, whoever you are and wherever you’re standing, why don’t you show up and end this entuerto once and for all. Show yourself!
THOMAS: Go ahead Virgil, show yourself.
[Virgil appears in front of Nico with his face right next to Nico’s face, his creepy music theme sounds]
VIRGIL: [tempest tongue] If you insist, nice to meet you, Nico.
[Nico only lets go a little gasp, then gets completely frozen, looking at the apparition in front of him. He doesn’t move a muscle]
THOMAS: Ni… Nico? Are you okay?
[with the same gesture, Nico collapses and would have fallen to the floor if Virgil hadn’t grabbed him midway]
VIRGIL: Whoa!
THOMAS: Oh, no! Virgil, perhaps you shouldn’t have appeared so close to him all of a sudden. And definitely, you shouldn’t have used your tempest tongue. Do you want to give him a heart attack?
VIRGIL: I’m so sorry, Thomas. You know, when I’m anxious, that voice can appear out of nowhere and I can’t control it. Now, will you help me or…?
THOMAS: Oh, yes, we’ll take him to the couch.
[Thomas and Virgil lay Nico on the couch]
VIRGIL: Well, now what, Thomas?
THOMAS: Perhaps you should step aside a couple of steps so as not to scare him again. I’ll try to wake him up.
VIRGIL: Okay…
THOMAS: Nico… Nico, are you okay? Wake up.
[Nico slowly opens his eyes]
NICO: Oh, Thomas… You wouldn’t believe the dream I just had, I… wait a minute, what am I doing sleeping in your house? Was it…? It was a dream, right? Tell me it was, Thomas.
THOMAS: I… I’m sorry, Nico… but it wasn’t a dream.
[Nico notices Virgil]
VIRGIL: Hello again, sorry about earlier. I didn’t mean to scare you like that.
NICO: [sitting down] Oh, my goodness…
THOMAS: Are you okay, Nico? I really didn’t mean to scare you. It’s just that… I thought we were having something good, something that I, at least, want to last for a lifetime… and I thought that, if we were going to be together, I couldn’t have secrets with you… [scared] because you still want to be with me, right?
NICO: I… I… I’m so confused right now, I don’t even know what to think right now…
[Nico stands up]
NICO: I’m sorry, but I need some fresh air to put my ideas in order. I gotta go, Thomas.
THOMAS: [sighs] As you wish, Nico… I understand.
[Nico leaves the house. Thomas looks at the closed door while a tear falls down his cheek]
VIRGIL: I’m sorry, Thomas. I’m sorry this didn’t go as we wished.
THOMAS: [trembling voice, trying to hide his feelings and pretend he’s okay] It… It’s okay. If this was bound to happen… it’s better that it happened this soon in our relation and not when I was too invested into it and someone got hurt… [bursting into tears] Oh, who am I trying to lie to, I was already invested and it hurts…
[Virgil hugs Thomas]
VIRGIL: If it serves as consolation… he still hasn’t broken up with you, not officially at least. Perhaps it’s true that he just needs some time to think.
THOMAS: [sobbing] I really want to believe that, Virge… but I’m not so sure of it…
VIRGIL: Well, there’s nothing we can do about it right now, so… [sweet voice, petting Thomas’ hair] Oh, hush, my friend, hush. It’s okay… It’s gonna be okay…
[Thomas keeps sobbing for some time, but slowly he calms down]
VIRGIL: That’s better. Now, would you like to play some video games here? It’s been ages since we had a good old game and at least it would help distract you, and me to ease up.
THOMAS: Thank you, Virge, for trying to lift my spirits up even when it is against your nature. You truly are a good friend.
VIRGIL: I’ll always be here for you. So, wanna play?
THOMAS: [sniffing and cleaning the tears with his hands] Of course, Virge, of course.
[Thomas and Virgil start playing video games. After about an hour or so, someone knocks at the door]
VIRGIL: Were you expecting someone, Thomas?
THOMAS: [pausing the game] No… Oh… do you think it could be…?
VIRGIL: There’s only one way to find out, Thomas.
[Thomas rushes to the door and opens it. Nico is there]
THOMAS: Nico!
NICO: Can I… can I come in?
THOMAS: Of course you can, Nico.
[Nico comes in. He notices Virgil]
NICO: Hello, Virgil. How… how are you doing?
VIRGIL: I’m okay, Nico, thanks for asking, and as I said, I’m sorry about earlier, I didn’t mean to scare you.
NICO: It’s okay.
THOMAS: So… you came back…
NICO: Yes, I did… To be honest… I didn’t go too far. I didn’t even leave the neighborhood, nor I got into the car, it was still there at the door. I just walked for a while, then sat down in the park nearby, thinking about everything, reflecting about all of this.
THOMAS: And did you get to a conclusion?
NICO: I did. After some time, when the scare wore off, I reviewed things in my mind more calmly, and I realized something. I… really didn’t see anything bad at all in you having Sides. Like, nothing at all. Of course it’s weird, but that isn’t necessarily bad. And on the other hand, I was certain of something I already knew before. Thomas, I love you. I love you… like I never loved a man before in my life. I don’t care if you have Sides or not. I love you and I don’t want to give you up. There’s one word you mentioned earlier, a word that, without me noticing it, got stuck into my mind and my heart as something I really wanted to have: a lifetime with you. I envisioned a lifetime with you and I couldn’t feel happier. You can bet that, if you let me, I’m gonna fight to make that lifetime with you work and I’m not ever leaving you as long as you love me.
[Thomas, imbued by a sudden passion, hugs and kisses Nico, while Virgil watches the scene with a heartwarming smile and his eyeshadow turns bright purple. After the kiss, Nico notices Virgil’s change]
NICO: Whoa, what’s that?
VIRGIL: What? Oh, this? Please, don’t’ mind me. When Thomas feels butterflies in his stomach, like you’re making him feel right now, I turn into a Glo Worm, it seems. It ruins my aesthetic, but to be honest, I feel so incredibly good when it happens that I don’t mind it happening at all.
NICO: [smiling at Thomas] Aw… that’s so cute.
THOMAS: [nervous giggle] Yes… it is, although I’m not so sure if I want anyone to rat my feelings out so easily…
VIRGIL: Well, sorry, Thomas, but I’m part of you as you know. He asked, I answered. Besides, with that kiss you have just given him, I think you made your emotions quite clear before he saw my purple eyeshadow.
THOMAS: You got me there.
NICO: Speaking about parts of you… how many of you, Sides, are there? I’m intrigued now.
THOMAS: Do you want to know them?
NICO: Yes, I would love to. And I would also love to see what you called the Mind Palace, that place must certainly be something.
THOMAS: If I could, I would take you to the Mind Palace, so that you could meet my Sides in their habitat. You would love it. Alas, that’s not possible yet.
NICO: Why not?
THOMAS: Well, I can only bring in and out of my Mind Palace people who have gone through a certain process. They must synchronize their brainwaves through hypnosis to make them compatible with mine. For that, we need my friend Talyn, but they’re out of town now. I can’t wait for that moment to come, though.
NICO: Gotcha. Still, I want so bad to know your Mind Palace. I imagine it to be such an incredible place. If I close my eyes, I can almost see it…
[Nico closes his eyes and smiles, rejoicing in his thoughts… then, out of a sudden, he sinks down and disappears]
THOMAS: [scared] Wait, what? Nico!
VIRGIL: [in shock, his eyeshadow turns black] Oh, my goodness! What has just happened?
THOMAS: I… I don’t know… Could he have… sank down into the Mind Palace?
VIRGIL: But he hasn’t been synchronized! That’s impossible!
THOMAS: And yet, there’s no other explanation. Come with me, Virge, we need to find him!
[Thomas and Virgil sink down, then they rise up in Logan’s room. Logan and Patton are there, playing Scattergories]
PATTON: Oh, hi, kiddos!
VIRGIL: Hi, dad.
LOGAN: What’s wrong, guys? You look concerned.
THOMAS: Have you seen Nico anywhere?
LOGAN: What? Nico? You have synchronized him without warning us to get into autopilot!? Thomas, how could you…?
THOMAS: That’s the weirdest thing, Logan! We didn’t synchronize him! He just sank down naturally!
LOGAN: Oh… and besides, Patton didn’t fall asleep as it happens to everyone but me when you’re hypnotized… That’s weird. Could it be that he has his own Mind Palace and has sank down there?
THOMAS: I… I hadn’t thought about that… Who knows…? But I don’t think so, otherwise, he wouldn’t have freaked out so much over knowing of the Sides’ existence. No, I don’t know how or why, but he must be somewhere in this Mind Palace. The question is where?
LOGAN: Don’t worry, Thomas, he can’t have gone too far. We’ll help you search.
THOMAS: Thank you, guys. Okay, you guys go to Roman’s room and I’ll go with Virgil to Janus’.
PATTON: Okay, kiddo. Good luck.
[everybody sinks down. Then Thomas and Virgil rise up in Janus’ room. Janus is touching up his snake make up and Remus is doing Remus stuff in the kitchen]
JANUS: Oh, hi, Thomas, hi Virge.
VIRGIL: Hi, Janus. Hi, Remus.
REMUS: Do you want to taste what I’m cooking? I just hunted it behind the counter!
VIRGIL: Uh… no, thanks.
THOMAS: We came here to check if Nico was here. But it seems you didn’t see him.
JANUS: Nico is in the Mind Palace? How?
THOMAS: That’s what I’d wish to know. He must be somewhere, but where?
VIRGIL: Well, we can rule out Sandersia, for sure. Unless you’re the Mind Palace owner, that is you, Thomas, from the outer world, you can only reach directly the rooms, and any other place must be reached once you are in the Mind Palace.
REMUS: And you can also rule out my room. It is protected by a barrier only Roman and I can cross as you remember, and the other door is through Sandersia, which is also ruled out, so.
[Logan and Patton rise up in Janus’ room with Roman and Ian]
ROMAN: They already brought me up to date. Nico isn’t in my room either, Thomas.
IAN: And we can see he’s not here either.
VIRGIL: Then there’s only one place he could have gone to. My room.
THOMAS: Oh, my goodness! Then, that means he must have met the ghouls that are living there! I hope they didn’t cause a shock too bad on him! We must hurry!
[everybody sinks down. Then, they rise up in Virgil’s room. Nico is there playing video games with the ghouls]
NICO: Oh, Thomas! There you are!
THOMAS: Nico! Oh, my goodness, you scared me so bad! Are you okay?
NICO: I’m fine, Thomas. I don’t know what happened I just closed my eyes, and when I opened them, your room had changed, and these guys were on the couch playing video games. They’re very nice, actually.
HEIGHT: Thank you. You’re very nice too, Nico.
THOMAS: Well, thanks guys for taking care of my boyfriend. I don’t know how he got here in my Mind Palace, but he just sank down in here.
NICO: Really? This is your Mind Palace? Wow…
VERTIGO: He just rised up in the middle of the room. We got a little shocked when we saw him, as it was clear he wasn’t one of the Sides, he didn’t look like you. But we just got along instantly. Are all humans so kind and fun to hang out with?
THOMAS: Nah, I just think that Nico is one of a kind, that’s why I love him.
NICO: Same, Thomas.
THOMAS: And now, how could this happen? How could Nico enter my Mind Palace barely without trying without going through the synchronization? Logan, have you got any explanation?
LOGAN: Well, if Nico could enter here, then that means only one thing: his brainwaves are naturally compatible with yours. He was born with the ability of entering your Mind Palace in particular.
PATTON: Awww, that’s so cute!
LOGAN: Why is it cute, Patton?
PATTON: Don’t you see? Thomas and Nico were born for each other! They are soul mates that were destined to be together, bound to meet and to be together sooner or later! So compatible that they read each other’s mind, or in this case enter each other’s mind.
[Thomas and Nico look at each other, then smile]
THOMAS: Do you think so, Patton?
PATTON: Yes!
JANUS: I don’t know if such thing as soul mates does really exist to begin with. To me it looks all a little… commercial, like St. Valentine’s Day.
ROMAN: Oh, shut up, Sulk Scales, I love that thought, it’s so romantic that it bums me I didn’t think of it first!
THOMAS: Roman, nicknames.
ROMAN: Sorry, Janus.
PATTON: Oh, Janus, don’t be like that! You know first hand that love is real. And that explains that huge force I felt the other day, so much so that it overwhelmed me and left me almost out of breath.
THOMAS: Wait, what? Patton, you never told me that! Are you okay?
PATTON: Yes, kiddo. I am now. I got accustomed to it. It’s just that your love for Nico is so strong it fills out the whole Mind Palace with its strength. That’s why the Core told me that Nico was needed to save Virgil and Roman’s son…
NICO: Wait, what?
[Thomas frowns at Patton]
VIRGIL: Great going, dad. Thomas hadn’t told him anything about that yet.
PATTON: [covering his mouth] Oh, I’m so sorry, guys. I thought you had already talked it out.
NICO: What does he mean, Thomas?
THOMAS: Well, I wanted to touch this topic later, when you got accustomed to the existence of my Sides, but as the cat is out of the bag now… You see, Roman and Virgil’s son, Dillon, is trapped by a malicious entity called the Paladin who has taken possession of his body. Patton has discovered that the only way to save him is by you going by my side into the Cave of Doom, where we have him contained, and help me take care of him.
NICO: That sounds dangerous.
THOMAS: It probably is. Inside the Mind Palace, I have power, and I would make sure to protect you from any danger we may face… But I’m sorry that my Mind Palace isn’t all sunshine and rainbows. It has its dark places and its malicious entities too. I’d wish to be, but I’m not perfect as that attests.
NICO: I don’t care if you’re not perfect. Is anyone perfect at all? I’m not perfect either, Thomas, and that’s okay. Don’t beat yourself about it.
THOMAS: Of course, Nico, I would never demand you to help us, especially if there is some kind of risk for you. Heck, I’m totally against you participating in this anyway because I don’t want to endanger you. [to Virgil and Roman] Sorry, guys, but I had to say it.
ROMAN: It’s totally fine, Thomas, we understand. And like we told you, there’s no need for Nico to participate. We’ll try to find another way.
THOMAS: Gosh, but it makes me feel so guilty… Dillon’s life is endangered… but at the same time… gosh, this is tearing me apart.
NICO: Thomas, I’ll do it.
THOMAS: What?
NICO: I know you want to protect me, because you always want to treasure and protect what you love, but I’m my own person to make the choice, and if you say that there’s one life endangered if I don’t help, my own consciousness tells me that I need to do my best to help. I’ll help you, in every way that I can, even if I don’t know what I am supposed to do, but I will. You can count on me.
VIRGIL: Thank you so much, Nico.
ROMAN: We can’t express how thankful we are if you’re willing to help.
THOMAS: Are you sure, Nico? I don’t know to what extent, but this could be dangerous.
NICO: I am sure. And as long as you are by my side, I won’t be afraid.
THOMAS: I love you. I love you so much, you don’t have an idea. Gosh, I know I’m acting so super sweet that I could cause diabetes on anyone passing by, but I can’t help yelling it to the world. I love you, Nicolás Flores.
[Thomas kisses Nico]
[ending card]
[some time later. Thomas has introduced Nico to all of the Sides and talked to him about their adventures]
VIRGIL: … and we also have another son, Chris. Well, his name is Christian Gerard Sanders but we call him Chris for short. He’s now in Sandersia, staying over in Roland’s castle for a few days.
NICO: What is Sandersia?
ROMAN: It’s a land attached to my room where all of Thomas’ characters and creations exist for real. I’m the Royal Prince that rules it, although Roland governs it in my place as regent. Oh, and Roland is my brother, by the way.
NICO: I see… Wow, there’s a lot to memorize here about this world, I hope I don’t get myself into a mess. So many people and places… and it’s all in your head, Thomas. How can you cope?
THOMAS: I’m accustomed already. I’ve been living through it since I was three years old. Don’t worry if you mess up here and there. We understand it’s not easy and it’s all kind of a shock coming all at once so suddenly.
NICO: So, let’s see if I got it right. You, Virgil, are Thomas’ vigilance and anxiety.
VIRGIL: Correct.
NICO: You, Roman, are Thomas’ pure Creativity, his romanticism and his ego.
ROMAN: Perfect.
NICO: Remus, you are Roman’s twin brother and Thomas’ not so pure creativity.
REMUS: Oh, I could kiss you. Can I kiss him, Thomas?
JANUS: [frowning] No, no you can’t, Remus.
NICO: You, Janus, you are Thomas’ deceitful nature and his self-preservation.
JANUS: Not impressed at all that you remembered…
NICO: Patton, you’re Thomas’ morality, his feelings and his inner child.
PATTON: Yes, kiddo, exactly.
NICO: You, Logan, are Thomas’ logical thinking and his acquired knowledge.
LOGAN: A+ for you, Nico.
NICO: You, Ian, you are Janus’ brother and encompass Thomas’ honest thinking. You two used to be kind of Siamese brothers sharing the same body in turns, but now are independent.
IAN: That’s right.
NICO: And then, there’s Chris, who, you said, is Thomas’ angsty creativity, and he’s Roman and Virgil’s son, as well as Dillon’s brother. I still don’t understand well how two people with the same reproductive organs could conceive a child, but the rest I got it right.
THOMAS: That’s easy to understand, though. As Sides are not human, they don’t follow the same biological rules as humans do and the laws of science don’t affect them. We’re talking about entities that can appear and disappear, can shapeshift, stretch their limbs as if they were made of rubber… it was only natural that reproduction didn’t work the same as with humans.
NICO: Gotcha… speaking about their son, there’s one thing I wonder. Each Side has at least one function in Thomas’ psyche. What does Dillon encompass exactly?
ROMAN: Well, to be honest, we don’t truly know.
VIRGIL: Yeah, we guessed that he encompassed Thomas’ hope, that’s why we named him Dillon, which means hope in Irish. You know that Thomas has Irish ancestors, right?
NICO: Yes, he told me. But you guessed he was Thomas’ hope? You’re not sure?
ROMAN: No, because that dang Paladin caught him even before he was born and we couldn’t identify him. Logan used to be able to examine us with an ability he had in his hands, he could have detected the Paladin’s presence inside Dillon’s body as soon as I delivered him. But he lost that ability in some unfortunate event we’ll tell you about some day, and couldn’t do it.
LOGAN: On the subject of my ability… guys, there’s one thing I gotta announce to you.
ROMAN: What is it, Logan?
LOGAN: Remember our latest adventure with the Core, how I had to stretch my arm to catch Patton before he was absorbed by the Core?
NICO: What?
LOGAN: Don’t worry, Nico, we’ll explain to you later. The point is that when my hand got closer to the Core… the Core’s influence touched it and its power imbued me without me even noticing in the turmoil of angst over saving Patton.
ROMAN: Are you going to tell me that the Core got you a gift, just like Patton now can heal us?
LOGAN: It got me a gift, but not a new gift like Patton’s. You guys, the Core has brought my examination ability back. We knew it was a matter of a long time that it was restored, but the Core accelerated that restoration. I can check you guys again.
THOMAS: That’s so great to hear, Logan! I’m happy for you! That ability was always very useful for all of us and it’s good to know that you have it back!
LOGAN: Yes, but not only it has restored it, it has removed the unpleasant side effect of electrification that I felt if I checked someone’s memories or that someone felt if I sent him mine. Now it’s all a more pleasant, totally painless process.
JANUS: Great, because I still remember that electric feeling and it wasn’t pleasant at all.
THOMAS: Okay, guys. Then if we’re all set, we need to start making a plan. There’s a Side in distress in the bottom of a cave that needs our help, a cave we also need to conquer back so that the ghouls can recover their friends and home. It’s time to face the Paladin once and for all.

A Different Kind of Magic For My Poor Heart
Prompt: Write about how magic is the norm. Some excel at it, some are only okay, and others are against it completely, despite being able to use it. Your main character is the latter.
A/N: I used SAGA instead of LGBTQ+ due to the fact that I once saw a post referring to how it should be the official name instead of LGBTQ+ due to the fact that it's all inclusive, and I personally loved the idea.
Nico di Angelo glared at his reflection, staring himself down. He noticed how his black eyes flitted across the mirror, taking in every little imperfection of his face.
He noticed the bags under his eyes, his extremely pale skin with majorly contrasting freckles, the way his chapped lips looked too feminine for his liking, how his eyes were such a dark brown they were almost black, and not to mention all the scars lining his bare chest and shoulders, the long-lasting bruise around his neck like a choker he can never seem to get rid of or cover up.
A hard knock at his door had him spinning around, quickly putting on his black Punisher t-shirt, pulling his black Joker themed beanie tighter over his long black hair before grabbing and adjusting his leather jacket.
He opened the door, gripping the strap of his Three Days Grace satchel tightly in one hand as he beamed at his crush, Percy Jackson.
"Hey, dude! You ready for our magical adventure?" Percy asked, his sea green eyes brimming with excitement.
Nico inwardly cringed at the word "magical". He hated magic, especially his own. He felt uncomfortable whenever his friends used their powers, even when Percy did.
Magic was a common thing in this world, but at the time and age he came from, it was looked down upon to use it in public. He still wasn't used to this time and age, his mind was still stuck in that time when magic users, people of color, and people of the SAGA community were all shunned and abused and used.
Nico nodded, exiting his cabin into the cold fall air, pulling his fingerless gloves tighter, hoping to cover more of his slightly exposed wrists.
Camp Half-Blood was a summer and year round camp for "disturbed" children and teenagers, according to the flyers and advertisements. In reality, it was a camp built to help young children and teens learn to better control their powers.
When he was ten, Percy and his best friend Annabeth had found him and his older sister Bianca and brought them here. Bianca instantly jumped on the train, and ended up abandoning him to join an all girls camp. He hated her for it for a while, but then he learned to accept it all.
Except for the fact that he was forced to use his magic everyday in order to keep himself from becoming homeless. That was the only downside.
He shuddered when he remembered how hard it was to survive without using his magic when he had ran away from camp.
He followed Percy to the borders of camp, where Argus, a mute man who has the magical ability to see everything around him, was waiting for them by the camp van.
He nodded at them, and Percy nodded back. Nico felt like a hundred eyes were staring down at him in disapproval, and due to Argus' nickname being the "Hundred Eyed Man" among campers, he wouldn't be surprised if it was the man himself.
He climbed into the back of the van next to Percy, only to have a pair of thin yet strong arms wrap around his neck.
"BABY BAT WINGS!" an excited voice shouted in his ear.
Nico rolled his eyes, "Shut it, Repair Boy," he said, turning to glare at one of his best friends, Leo Valdez.
He noticed that the others were already there, and Nico glared at Jason Grace, who was wiggling his eyebrows at him.
"Awee, but Neeeeeekssss~!" Leo whined, earning a light slap from Jason's girlfriend, Piper McLean.
"Leo, leave the poor boy alone. Look at him, he has depression!"
Okay, low-blow, McLean.
He groaned and sunk further into his seat, clutching his satchel to his chest.
Finally, the door to the front opened, and in a second, one Annabeth Chase became visible.
Nico hated her power most of all. Invisibility, one of the most hated magical abilities from his time period. It was most common among thieves and murderers back then. Worst part is, it's all of both Athena cabin and Hermes cabin that have the ability, and they're both filled with people most likely capable of committing these crimes.
He doesn't like Jason's or Piper's either. He doesn't mind Leo's and Percy's. It still bothers him, but as he knew Leo before camp- he met him when they had both ran away from their respective homes at the same time-, and he has a crush on Percy, it doesn't bother him as much.
But Annabeth... He didn't like her much. She was always nice to him, but he could tell she liked Percy too, and he disliked her for it, because although Percy may be bi, he tended to lean more towards girls than guys.
Not to mention, he knew she could murder him in seconds if she wanted to, so there was also that.
Nico huffed as Annabeth signed to Argus effortlessly, and he responded just as easily.
Miss Perfect, Percy's little Wise Girl.
He put his bag down at his feet and managed to pull his knees up to his chest, earning a strange look from Percy.
He smiled at him, a small smile, but a smile nonetheless, and Percy smiled back so warmly and brightly Nico swore he was from the Apollo cabin, with magical abilities as bright and pure yet dangerous as the sun.
Nico flinched and blushed a deep red when Percy swung his arm over his shoulders. Whether the older boy noticed or not, he didn't say. Nico had to fight the urge to snuggle up against him.
Lo and behold, he didn't have to hold back for long, because Leo- who knew about his crush on the water-bender- decided to be a very unwanted wing-man and climbed to the middle seats where he and Percy sat and sat down next to Nico, pushing him against Percy's side regardless of what his pride and dignity demanded of him.
He could feel Annabeth's grey eyes watching him from the rear-view mirror, and instantly cursed every single god he could think of for this cursed fate.
This... Was going to be one long-ass field trip.
~
Nico huffed as he face planted onto the bed of the hotel room in New Rome, the camp on the opposite side of the US.
He still didn't know who he was bunking with, because as soon as he saw the key-cards he grabbed one and ran, dragging his bag behind him.
He sat up and turned to face the opening door, only for his face to drain of color.
"No, you can not be my bed-mate!" Nico cried, glaring Percy down.
Percy looked taken aback, "But... Leo is staying with Frank and Hazel, Annabeth is staying with Reyna, and Jason is bunking with Piper. I've got nobody else to bunk with, and we only booked four rooms..."
"Who the fuck authorized that?" he demanded.
"Jason did?" Percy said, although it sounded more like a question.
"DAMMIT! I KNEW I SHOULDN'T HAVE COME HERE!"
"...Am I that horrible?"
Nico's head shot up at the cold, angry voice Percy was using. He's never used it on Nico or Grover, but he's directed it at everybody else, including Annabeth, at least once.
"What?" he asked, confused.
Percy's hands shook slightly, and Nico knew if he got anymore angry than he was, toilets and sinks and tubs would start exploding and flooding the place.
"Am I that horrible that the mere idea of me sharing a bed with you makes you wish you never came along? Do you actually hate me that bad? Do I make your skin crawl because I'm not afraid to use my magic? Is that it?"
"N-no-"
"Then what the fuck is it, Nico?!"
There went the sink, two more to go before instant flooding of the hotel room.
"I-I-"
"You, you? You what, Nico?"
The toilet exploded then. One more before doomsday.
So, naturally, Nico lost his shit, and went crazy-mad first.
"I DON'T WANT TO SHARE A ROOM WITH YOU BECAUSE I LIKE YOU, YOU STUPID MERMAID!" Nico finally snapped, wanting to get away. He could feel his own magic run rampant, the room temperature dropping to below freezing, shadows clawing at his clothes and the walls. He could feel the skeletons trying to break free from the ground, trying to come to him.
Percy froze, before making his way over to the bed.
Nico cowered, and put a hand out. Shadows shot from his palms, wrapping themselves around Percy's legs and knocking him down, "S-stay away. I-I know I-I'm disgusting. You like Annabeth, obviously, you always tended to favor her over me before. Sure, you've been really nice lately, but... You always fall back to her and Grover, a-and-"
He let out a hiccup, wiping at the tears he didn't even realize until now he had been shedding, and retracted his hands, the shadows retreating back into his body like clockwork.
The sink and toilet stopped flowing as Percy just sat there, sprawled on the ground still, staring up at Nico, who was now full-on sobbing.
"A-an' I know you don't want a... A pathetic k-kid like me... Somebody w-ho d-doesn't even like magic... And... I just wish you'd l-leave me alone because all I w-want is you but I can't have you and..."
Nico let out a light gasp as he was pulled against a warm, well-built chest.
Percy's chest.
'He smells like the ocean...' Nico thought, feeling all the strength he had leave his body.
He broke down, majorly. Wailing and all.
"Hey, hey... It's okay, Neeks... Come on, look at me..." Percy mumbled softly, rubbing soothing circles into Nico's back.
Nico let out a small sob, and managed to force himself to look up at Percy, who was looking at him with concern.
Great, now you're a charity case.
"W...Why are you still here...?" he asked in a small voice, trying to keep himself from falling victim to a panic attack.
"Because, Ghost King, I like you too," Percy replied, smiling softly.
Nico stared at him in utter shock, mouth opening and closing like a fish.
"I didn't tell you because I wasn't sure you liked me back, not to mention I'm older than you by three years, and..."
"You... No... I... What...?"
"Awe, I broke your poor little brain," Percy teased, and Nico let out a small laugh.
"In your dreams, Seaweed Brain."
"Hey, only Annabeth can call me that."
Nico instantly soured. "Sorry," he spat, "Mermaid-Man."
Percy's face instantly turned into one of apology, "I'm sorry, I-"
Nico laughed, "Now look who got fucked over! HA!"
"You little fuckin'-" He was suddenly cut off by Nico, who had pressed his lips against Percy's in a short, gentle kiss.
He was satisfied by the fact that when he pulled away, Percy was blushing madly.
"So ah... What now?" he asked sheepishly, and Nico grinned.
"One, be my boyfriend. Two... Go on a date with me?"
Percy nodded, "YES!" he shouted, only to seemingly mentally reel himself back in and say, "I-I mean, ah, yes, that sounds lovely."
Nico laughed again, smiling brightly as he wiped away the rest of his tears, "Great, let's go."
"Now?"
"Right now, yes. There's still daylight."
Percy smiled back, nodding as he stood up, helping the other boy to his feet as well.
He didn't let go of Nico's hand afterwards.
They went off, laughing and smiling and exchanging sweet kisses.
Nico may not like magic, but he enjoys how magical the trip turned out to be, he enjoyed how magical the sparks of each kiss he shared with Percy felt, and how magical the tingling of his fingers entwined with the older boy's felt.
He may not like the magic he's accustomed to, but the magic of Percy's hand in his, of knowing Percy is his, makes him hate magic a little less.
Just a little.

The Shamer's Daughter musicals are far better, though still flawed, adaptations of the books than the movies are, because the musicals fundamentally understand the source material they're adaptating, while the movies just went "oh, Danish fantasy? yeah I guess we'll go through these plot beats."
The heart of the first book is Dina finding self-acceptance through making friends. Yes, a lot of shit is going down, but the fundamental personal change that takes place is Dina making friends – and not despite of her Shamer powers, but because of them. She starts out the books friendless and wishing she didn't have her powers, and in the book we see how her powers are what allows her to know Nico's innocence and to help Rosa break free of the self-hate a lifetime of bullying has created. The two most essential scenes are Dina and Nico in the dungeon cell and Dina using her Shamer powers on Rosa.
The movie cut most of the first scene. In the musical, it's one of the central songs.
Another main theme, both in the first book and especially in the second and third, is how powerful people use scandal and propaganda to hide their wrongdoings and villainise their enemies. Shamers are well-respected figures in the first book, to the point where to discredit Melussina and Dina, Drakan has to make the argument that they are false Shamers, mere witches pretending, to discredit them. Later on, that justification has almost entirely fallen away as Shamers are burned throughout the lowlands and the practice keeps catching up with our heroes and forcing them to flee. We also see Drakan consistently positions himself as a friend to the common people while making no real other change in their lives than allowing them to die for him in his army.
The movies were apparently not interested in this theme, for it is not something they take the time to explore. Indeed, the first movie ends implying that rather than having fleed as such, the heroes have merely retreated with a bunch of allies, about ready to start a rebellion for Nico's ~rightful~ place on the throne. Not only do the heroes barely have any allies at this point in the books, this is a complete and utter misunderstanding of Nico's character. He had never and does never want that throne. He's a scared 17 year old gnc boy who drinks too much and would really be rather pleased if he never had to hold a sword again. In the books, he's actively uncomfortable with being expected to lead a rebellion.
The musicals, on the other hand, has song upon song exploring the aforementioned theme, and while Nico is still portrayed as more Standard Fantasy Hero than he ever is in the books, he is allowed the vulnerability that is central to his character, the ways in which he was abused and continues to be mocked for being gnc are carried over, at least in the first musical (whereas his arc falls a bit in the background in the second iirc, as a lot of it happens with Davin, whom the musical fumbles because it skipped the second book, which is absolutely essential to his character development and motivation).
But yes, it's not that the musicals didn't have issues (particularly the second one) but the movies seemingly had no real interest in understanding the story they were adapting and most certainly not with carrying over any of the subversions of common tropes found in the books.
