When I was a kid, my parents taught me to never give out personal information, especially ID, online
Now websites will demand it
That will still be a huge ' NO! ' for me

In retrospect, one thing I kinda like in ATLA is how Zuko never tells the gaang how he got his scar.
It would have been cool to see their reactions to Zuko's story and see how their perspective on Zuko changed. And I have no doubt that he tells them about it at some point. But this way, it doesn't come off as emotional blackmail, with him trying to paint his actions as 'Yes, I hunted you across the world, but I actually had a really good reason."
If he did, he might have had a better chance of joining the Gaang, but he doesn't. In traditional Zuko fashion, he takes the most challenging route possible.
Zuko takes full accountability for his actions, even though they came from a place where he felt he had no choice. Because at the end of the day, he realized that even though his father put him on his avatar's path, he was the one who zealously attacked them at every opportunity. He isn't letting himself off the hook for anything.
#i used to go looking for fic where the gaang finds out about it#bc that is something ive always really wanted to see#but it really is a lot better that we don't get that in canon#atla

Just made myself so so sad thinking about Aang's marble trick because from a physics perspective, keeping dense spherical objects afloat on an airstream is not trivial, and he's doing it in a tiny little space without moving his hands. Bending is usually very gestural. So. Everyone in the era of the show is, at best, impressed THAT it is airbending. But Aang's an incredibly young master airbender. He wouldn't be acting like this was the bestest trick ever if it didn't take at least some skill; he's a goofy kid but he's also a prodigy. I bet other airbenders were absolutely blown away (pun fully intended) at the level of precision and force and minimalism of movement on display and now there's no one who understands at all why he expects accolades.

Artist Yudori musing on queer expression and queerness in fiction, diverging by cultural perception. [originally posted on instagram]
#the boundary between queer and normative in western cultures#has been a *lot* stricter the last ~200 years than it was before that#the boundary still existed in a different way from eg East Asian cultures#but it was often loose enough for some of that beautiful chaos to exist#certainly the lack of non-romantic/erotic homosocial intimacy is mostly a 20th century thing#and contemporarily a lot more prominent in the US than many countries in Europe#anyway super important lense to bring to interpretation!#the term 'queerbaiting' has really gotten away from people

I hadn't thought about this before, but COP 15 (2009 UN Climate Change Conference) probably affected my political development more than I give it credit for
It showed me:
1) The uselessness of big international conferences in adressing time sensitive issues
All that build up in the media and in my city for a thoroughly underwhelming result. This is probably reductive, but it felt like the sort of meeting where the main take away is the date for the next meeting. Definitely affected my lack of trust in official political channels.
2) Just HOW many people can show up for a protest
I walked in the procession with my dad for maybe half of the planned route and it is to this day the biggest protest I've ever taken part in. I think seeing familiar streets filled to the brim with people made an impact in particular.
3) Anti-terrorism law as a tool of political repression
The section of the protest behind where we walked was the ~radical~ section, som of them black bloc. They must haven spoken of it in the media beforehand, because I remember my mom being worried about my dad and I getting caught up with them.
In any case, the police surrounded and detained around 900 protesters, most of whom had done nothing whatsoever, a dozen or so who'd thrown rocks. They used "suspected terrorism" as the reson for this "preventative detention," calling upon then-recently introduced legislation. This was deemed to be illegal after the fact, but not before prominent figures had defended it.
4) Cops are evil
The detained were zip tied and placed on the cold asphalt in the middle of December, where they sat for 3-5 hours. They were gradually driven away in busses, where they remained zip tied and sat on the floor. All but 3 were released without charges during the night.

#i can't verify this so maybe it was just a rumor going around back in the day#but i remember being told one of the detained was a pregnant woman#certainly a bunch would have been teenagers#obviously bad regardless of who you do it to#i was confused for a while about the numbers#bc the number 178 kept showing up but that's just the number of people who sued for damages#also 5) lars løkke is a conman who doesn't care about anything but his own power and wealth

I truly truly believe that the most important thing you can do in fandom is be a cheerleader. comment on fics. reblog art and rave in the tags. support the people making the things you want to see. this is how you keep a fandom alive. this is how you get more of what you want. you never know: that person could have decided to make more just because you liked it.

the thing that is really living in my mind rentfree re: the caitvi kinktober rules. is the requirement to depict aftercare for subs but not for doms. like yeah yeah there's a lot of bullshit in there of "failing to understand that fiction is not reality" variety. but even if we were talking about reality. doms also (often) need aftercare
I am saying this as a sub. you are a bad sub if you do not make sure that your dom is okay after a scene, unless you have explicitly had a conversation that indicates otherwise. you should be checking ahead of time what your dom will need from you afterwards. doms are human people who have emotional needs and you need to be acting like it. safe kinky sex has to be safe for everyone involved. everyone needs to stop acting like the dom never has needs. jesus christ
#it's very revealing of how they understand link#not as play between equal partners#but as something the dom does to the sub

i feel like something that's missing from some people's understanding of kink fiction and fantasy is, like... in fiction and fantasy, everything is in-scene.
when real people do kink in real life, you gotta do all that good out-of-scene stuff like discuss boundaries, set limits and expectations, check in with each other, do aftercare, et cetera et cetera et cetera... but in fiction, everything can be in-scene!
the people in that fanfic don't exist any more than, like, the make-believe sexy football star and make-believe sexy cheerleader in a couple's roleplay exist. that couple doesn't need to get into character and then pretend to be a sexy football star having an important consent conversation with a sexy cheerleader, because that's a conversation that's already happened out-of-scene and out-of-character. (i mean, if you're into in-character negotiations, chase your bliss.) when they're in that scene, they can just pretend to be a sexy football star having sex with a sexy cheerleader. that's okay.
so like. when fiction does kink in a way that would be unsafe or harmful irl... just keep in mind that you're not watching actual people neglecting check-ins or ignoring their set contract or genuinely harming each other. you're watching a scene without the behind-the-scenes bits, and that's okay.
