"In the name of love, you may perform acts so unforgivable that you may never forgive yourself."
This quote is fascinating because it shows Viren knew exactly how Harrow felt on his last day. He was going through the same thing.
But instead of showing understanding and empathy, Viren likely thought he needed to "get a grip", to be Harrow's unwavering pillar, especially after Sarai's death; he thought that should he happen to show any sort of doubt or weakness or crack whatsoever, Harrow, that is, the whole kingdom, and the whole of human realms, would collapse.
And it's so sad because had Viren not been emotionally constipated, the king might have felt less alone, and therefore less likely to end his own life.

we need to discuss soren's suicidal tendencies, this is not the first time he tries to sacrifice himself.
saying he's ready to die for king harrow. jumping into the ocean for one of the baby glowtoads. letting elmer beat him up over and over. and now asking viren to use his heart to save the people of katolis... he needs so much therapy

Viren was such a guy, he killed so many things, he’d do anything for his children except invest in therapy, he went after two kids because they dared to be in line for the throne, he gave his literal heart for Katolis, his son’s self esteem is in the trash and it’s his fault, he loves brutally and completley, he gave his HEART for his kingdom, he locked four people in coins for eternity, he’s easily manipulated, all he ever wanted was power, control, and his daughter’s happiness, he’s insane, he is all for genocide but draws the line at transphobia, he’s dead, his last words were “I am a servant”, he doesn’t know what a cell phone is
the most guy ever

Am I the only one who thinks that Callum will need a lot of therapy once everything is over? Because, seriously, that guy has been through so much and S6 Ep6 showed that he would’ve been completely broken if he found out the truth about the pearl he and Rayla brought to the Starscraper. And even before that point, he was having nightmares and trouble sleeping.
I dread to think what he’ll go through in Season 7, and how that may further affect him. In Kosmo’s vision, Astrid called him fragile and told Kosmo that telling him the truth about the pearl broke his spirit. Which I took to mean that he was already one step away from breaking and finding out that the pearl was fake pushed him over the edge. So, seeing how his home Katolis has been destroyed and Aaravos is now free, will Callum break next season or will knowing his deep truth keep him from going over the edge?
I just want him to get a big hug and lots of support, because it looks like he really needs both.

my crack canon quartet timeline bc @jelzorz did one and it's useful bc there's a decent amount to juggle
as always said quarter is Rayllum, Corvus/Terry, as well as aged up!Soren/Opeli and aged up!Ezran/Claudia. Y'all know the drill by this point
Relevant ages:
Opeli is 11 years older than Soren
Ezran is just under 7 years younger than Claudia
There's a rough alternative in which Claudia stays working with Aaravos for likely longer than she will in canon (aka for another 3-4 years) but for the sake of canon compliancy as its own interesting route...
Post-S7
Operating under the assumption that S6/S7 is wrapped up within a year / it takes about a year for everything to be somewhat stable (and that Opeli survives S6/S7...)
Ezran is 13, Callum is just shy of 18, Rayla is shy of 19, Soren is 21, Claudia is 19, and Opeli is 32.
Claudia and Terry's relationship did not survive all the upheaval, and after a short stay where they're both at the castle as friends, Terry departs for the western Katolis border for a fresh start (and to meet other, more open-minded humans). Claudia and Soren (taking a leave) go to Del Bar to reconnect with their mother and her family; the relationship is established, if perpetually strained.
Callum stays on that year as high mage, but he and Rayla know they'll be happier long term in Xadia / he can do more good studying and teaching the arcana to others by leaving. They move to the Hollow Wood (just magic-y, human friendly, and Moonshadow-y enough for them), a bustling Moonshadow city that isn't far from the Silvergrove (which let Rayla back in, but she likewise wants a fresh start). Callum teaches/studies manual connections to arcanum, and Rayla learns physical therapy and eventually teaches it, apprenticing in the city. They also appreciate the Anonymity that comes with a life away from court/Katolis. [ 20k oneshot detailing this first year away is outlined in my head ] They make sure to visit regularly though
Having a vacant High Mage position, Claudia and Soren come back, and she tentatively takes it up, at first more informally and then in title. (She has the Sun arcanum and it suits her). She brews a lot of remedies to help her body heal from the dark magic use over the years, as well as ones for Ezran as king and Opeli (stuff to ward off carpal tunnel and sore throats from talking a lot). Also plenty of hot brown morning potion. Claudia apprentices with Mavi, the castle physician.
Soren and Corvus start dating (Soren is like 22, Corvus is 24) and Moonshadow elf reintegration at the border starts, particularly in Ellis' town thanks to the Moon Nexus. Upon invitation, she comes to live at the castle as a veterinarian and Lujanne's Moon arcanum protege. Rayla and Callum get married (aged 20 and 21 respectively). Soren asks Corvus (and Opeli) to dance at the wedding
Wanting ultimately different things from life, Corvus and Soren break up a couple years later. Soren is 24 going on 25, and begins to take more notice of Opeli, as Corvus leaves to do more inter-Pentarchy reconnaissance for Ezran at the western border of the kingdom. He flirts with her, half-jokingly, and Opeli flatly shuts him down, and they become closer friends as Barius grows older and less likely to attend council meetings, and with Corvus as a buffer (as Opeli was always closer to him and more like minded)
Ezran is around 15 and strikes up a courtship with Ellis, but it is short lived. They stay friends, he introduces her more formally to Queen Aanya, and the two girls take an interest in each other. Soren (25-26) and Opeli (36-37) become quite good friends, often addressing each other affectionately as Captain and Cleric, respectively, Soren helping her learn how to defend herself (thank you jelly for the headcanon), and sharing snippets of poetry with each other. When Opeli has to travel home after her father's death to help put her estranged family's affairs in order, Soren accompanies her for safety reasons
Ezran is 17, and begins to develop some burgeoning feelings for Claudia, who still sees him as a young friend / more little brother figure. He and Soren go on a trip round the Pentarchy for about half a year for diplomacy reasons, and then come home when he's 18 going on 19. The time away and shifts in looks/personality allows Claudia to start seeing Ezran as more of an adult, but not totally as a love option (yet consciously anyway). Soren suspects there's been a shift on Ezran's end
Terry (24-ish) and Corvus (29-ish) meet at a pub and think the other person looks Strangely Familiar. However, there are plenty of elves and humans of all sorts out here at the borders, especially since Katolis and Duren's western borders open up the rest of the Pentarchy, and more elves are returning to their abandoned Nexuses / travelling to sell wares and help remove the spaces that dark magic previously filled. They become good friends, even if Terry is far more close-lipped about his past, and are dating for a little while before realizing why/how their pasts are intertwined. After a good laugh, some questions, and even more tears, they keep on going
Soren, who is 27, begins flirting more openly with Opeli (38) again. She finds herself surprisingly flustered, although they don't court plainly, it does eventually get there emotionally to the point there's Something going on, but Opeli firmly keeps it in limbo / is convinced that Soren will lose interest (we shall come back to this theme)
Ezran is 21 and helps officiate Ellis' and Aanya's wedding. He asks Claudia to dance; she accepts (under Opeli's hypocritically judgmental eye, tbh) and Soren likewise begins to think there's something persistent there on both sides. Callum and Rayla roll back into the Pentarchy for it and stay for a few weeks afterwards at the Banther Lodge with everyone; Callum is able to be civil with Claudia. He and Rayla (26 and 27) are pregnant with their first child.
Around 22, Ezran confesses to but is turned down by Claudia, who cites that she is too old/broken/damaged for him and that it'll pass, in spite of the fact she's fairly certain she is 1) mutually in love with him and 2) this is permanent on her end, not wanting to ruin his life 'again'.
A few months after, there is an attempt on Ezran's life from a pro-human anti-reunification extremist; Claudia's remedies save his life and the distance between them dwindles further. A concerned Callum and Corvus return from the castle, although Callum is doubly stressed as Rayla is 7-8 months pregnant back at home (the freed from coins in-laws have come to lend some help as well).
It becomes apparent that Claudia and Ezran are courting, quietly, to Opeli and to Soren, although most of the rest of the staff remain oblivious. Claudia is fearful of what everyone will say, and Ezran doesn't want to scare her off, so they keep it a secret. Opeli is greatly disapproving, partially due to the age gap but mostly due to Claudia's history, but Soren steps in to defend his sister and make sure Opeli doesn't spoil their happiness. Unhappily, she backs off
Corvus, visiting in the castle for the first time in a while, notes the changes between both pairs, and also discusses his relationship with Terry to Claudia and to Soren, who are happy for them (if find it mildly weirdly awkward/hilarious that their former partners are together). While Opeli, Soren, and Ezran make a trip to Xadia to go visit Rayllum and the new baby, Claudia goes to visit Terry, and the two renew their friendship properly; she encourages him and Corvus to get married, as Terry is beginning to plan for it
Shortly thereafter, Soren (29-30) and Opeli (40-41) start a physical thing, although Soren knows that it's More than that even if Opeli won't quite say it out loud. She subsequently backs off her disapproval of Claudia and Ezran, leaving the two confused and delighted respectively, although Claudia puts the pieces and respects her brother's privacy. Opeli tries to put up some more distance, fearing she's grown too attached / being quietly jealous when Soren has another woman interested in him, she eventually fesses up and the two are fully a couple. Opeli steps down as High Cleric but remains on the Council
At 23-24, Ezran proposes to Claudia (29-30), who full on panics, and flees to her mother's home in Del Bar. Ezran follows, and Lissa is very dryly aware that the King of Katolis is on her doorstep, but gives the two time to talk and her daughter some marginally helpful advice. A letter from Terry likewise helps. Claudia gleefully, tearfully does accept the proposal and goes back home, even if she's nervous about finally telling Callum (and Rayla's had some suspicions for a while now)
Callum and Rayla comes home for Soren (31) and Opeli's (42) winter wedding and stay a few weeks with their firstborn son, Raeven, who's around 2-3 years old. Rayla is pregnant with their second child. Ezran explains that he and Claudia have been courting for just under 2 years and that he intends to marry her. Callum does not take it well, for a variety of reasons, and it's one of the biggest, if not biggest, arguments the brothers have
Rayla and Callum leave, and the brothers don't speak to each other for 4-5 months, till Rayla needles that he wouldn't want Ez to meet the birth of their baby, and Callum folds and apologizes. He's not happy about it, but it's Ezran's choice and he can't stop him
Soren (32) and Opeli (42-43) are unexpectedly pregnant with twins (Opeli being a future sister-in-law of her king is not something she ever suspected, never mind that her children would marginally be in line for the throne and cousins with said heirs). Claudia and Terry swap ideas for their weddings (because Corvus beat Terry to the proposal punch) even if she's a bit more overwhelmed by a Royal wedding and mildly amused she's still having one, it's just not to Callum the way she'd always assumed it would be when they were young
The Sorpeli twins (Briella, she/her, and Brynn, she/they) are born in spring pretty close to the second Rayllum fanbaby, Juni (she/her). The births both go smoothly. Ezran (25) and Claudia (31) are married.
Callum remains civil but still a bit colder with Claudia until she (now 32) and Ezran (26) are having their first child, and there's complications in the birth/pregnancy due to prior dark magic use. He warms up a lot, seeing first how worried Ez is and how continually loyal/devoted Claudia is to his brother, and the fact they named their baby Sarai II doesn't hurt either. A few years later Claudia and Ezran have their second and last son, Daryenn. They take trips every once in a while (alongside Soren and Opeli sometimes) to go visit Corvus and Terry and their couple of kids as well
Assuming everyone here 1) lives throughout the show and 2) an epilogue doesn't show who anyone else is married to except Rayllum (in which case for Claudia in particular I will have the time of my life writing a Clauderry divorce fic) this is my canon, this is my endgame, no one can take it away from me, Thank You Goodnight

JUST BINGED DRAGON PRINCE SEASON 6 SO SPOILERS!
Viren taught his kids two different extremes. Do anything for your family. Do anything for the greater good.
The first is quickly addressed in the first 5 minutes of the 1st ep, "it should never be the other way!". honestly one of my favorite lines. While the other is addressed later in the season by Soren who is quick to order Viren to use his heart for the spell in order to save everyone; "Use my heart".
I love those lines, I really do, this one...this one is had me crying. "I am a servant. I am a servant". It is an answer to both of those extremes. A parent's role is to serve their child. They are a servant a lot of the time. To be high mage of Katolis is to be its servant. To do things for the greater good is to be a servant.
I loved that scene because my Dad often says that his job as my dad is to serve me and my brothers, he is to serve his children as their father.
Now moving on! How the hell did ice freezing veins blood magic become child's play in this season??? how the f*ck did they immediately top that in the first 3 minutes of the first episode
And will they for the love of god give me Terry's and Claudia's love story?! Why and how does this man love this woman like she hangs the goddamn stars and moon when so far I've seen a bit of onesided comfort and love giving. Not hating on Claudia, I get it, she needs some goddamn therapy and loving but I still have questions!!

Rayla: *to Soren after interrupting another Rayllum date* Why are you like this?
Callum: We have a saying in Katolis: ‘he was probably dropped on his head as a baby.’
Soren: Ha! I know for a FACT that didn’t happen because you have to be held to be dropped!
Rayla: Oh, Soren, no...
Soren: ......
Soren: ....This is why I need therapy?
Callum: This is why you need therapy.

the dragon prince has... a lot... of writing problems, but the easiest one to spot is probably the exposition the show has.
and it’s hard to succinctly explain why the exposition of the dragon prince so negatively impacts the show, because exposition by itself isn’t bad. the more complex your setting/plot is, the more of it you’ll need--sometimes, the audience needs stuff explained to them. normal.
but there are good ways and bad ways to deliver exposition, and tdp often exposits when it doesn’t really need to. these bits are very short--so they’re hard to spot--but it most often comes up when characters just explain what’s going on in their heads, even though it would be eminently clear with clever editing.
two easy examples that come to mind are a) when callum sees thunder’s corpse and just explains to rayla that he’s conflicted about it (in very uninspired words), and b) when soren explains to callum that the reason he bullied him about being a step-prince was because of his insecurity about his own father.
both were things that were particularly sour to me as a viewer, because a) real people don’t act like everything’s a 24/7 therapy session and b) you could easily use fairly typical cinematic language to convey both these ideas. in callum’s case, you can simply have a shot of him looking up to thunder and juxtaposing that with ezran, maybe even paste a bittersweet smile on his face and have him weakly hold rayla’s hand, whatever. in the second, all you needed to do was have soren apologize with an already-weird apology (”sorry for calling you the step-prince all these years, it was wrong.”) and maybe cut to viren and claudia. when people say “show, don’t tell,” this is the kind of thing they mean.
“it’s for kids.” yeah, kids don’t need this stuff. plus, the demographic that the dragon prince is ostensibly for has presumably grown up on a visual-media-heavy diet, and they understand better than perhaps any other generation the cues of editing.
but another bad piece of exposition is actually the very first scene of the show, where aaravos explains how the elves+dragons ethnically cleansed the humans. the problem with this scene is that i was immediately able to guess the logical course of events by the first two episodes of season 1:
1. humans were persecuted by the elves+dragons for not having magic
2. one guy “invented” dark magic
3. the elves and dragons don’t like that and wanted to exterminate the humans
4. for some reason, they just settled on relocating them instead.
all of this, by the way, turned out to be basically correct. season 3′s cold opener between ziard and sol regem confirms #1, aaravos is implied to be behind #2, and recent writing interviews basically confirm #3 and #4. basically, everything i ever wrote about the elves and dragons was... right?
this one exposition scene contains the entire meat of the conflict between the humans and the elves--and it communicates all this very well. maybe not well enough for some viewers, but i’m a fairly shallow media-consumer, so if it got the point across to me, it did good. so why am i saying that it’s bad exposition?
well, this one’s complicated. the main root of the problem is that the show proper (aside from another flashback in season 3) never addresses it. no character has any opinions on it, except viren, who vaguely references humanity needing to return to its ancestral homeland and wanting humanity to be free from chains. it’s a non-factor to literally everyone else--in three fucking seasons, not one character--not even a side character!--has any direct feelings or opinions re: the historical events that got them there.
And for a series that had “it’s not that simple, there are multiple atrocities from both sides!” in the first few episodes, you’d think that... part of the main conflict of the series... would be to grapple with the history... and move past it... instead of never looking at it, and naively ignoring history with nonspecific platitudes like “we can’t punish people for the crimes of their parents.”
and that last sentence makes sense only if tdp wants to ditch most of its backstory and keep it just between the royal families of katolis and xadia--but that’s not it, either. viren’s motivation has to do more with this history of dark magic and the results of the ethnic cleansing that followed than it does with punishing people for the crimes of their parents! which only works with the zym/ezran parallel and literally nothing else.
so as a viewer, knowing all this from the get go makes this series hard to watch. but i think there’s also a problem with the history being given to us as exposition the characters don’t interact with--and that’s the characters don’t interact with it. like imagine if this information was revealed to us at the same time it was brought up to the characters--it would mean that the audience would also be on a similar journey to the characters, and it would mean that the characters actually have to interact with that history.
like imagine if a human, instead of being a HUR DURR STUPID PEASANT WITH PITCHFORKS!!! actually said something like “the elves and dragons would have exterminated us, you think you can make peace with them?” or something like that, and that was the first hint of what would be going on. or maybe sol regem straight-up tells callum he’s a lesser being instead of that also being shoved into a flashback, maybe be like “ah, you remind me of the first of your kind!!! talk of peace but smells of death!!!” once he realizes callum has practiced dark magic before or... something!! then the show could actually grapple with what history means to the present instead of awkwardly handwaving it.
the fact that the history is more-or-less unimportant to the main characters also means that the setting and worldbuilding become less interesting and less relevant. aaravos, the Big Mystery Guy i’m supposed to care about, means jack shit to everybody except viren. and khessa, but she was racist and she died and she actually doesn’t matter. all the “ultimate villain” of the show has is... people being thirsty for him... and people who like making headcanons about him, which just isn’t really compelling plotting or writing.
anywas, imma end this tangent before it gets truly out of control. the more i think about it, the more i realize that front-loading such important aspects of tdp’s lore into the front was a mistake that let the writers be lazy with it and really... just throw most of the plot’s potential in the garbage. on a smaller level as well, the tendency to explain shit to the audience that doesn’t need to be explained kind of rips away the advantage of having a visual medium.

Mmm, okay.
There has been absolutely no indication that Claudia disagrees with anything that Viren is doing, even deep down. The most we’ve gotten from her is that she didn’t want to leave Soren to die, and that she didn’t (initially) agree with Viren’s decision to kill Callum and Ezran. When it comes to dark magic, she’s either gung-ho about it (her own spells) or ambivalent (she didn’t care what Viren had transformed their army into). Saying that Claudia disagrees with what Viren does “deep down” is a headcanon and nothing more. Unlike Soren, Claudia is happy to go along with what Viren wants, to the point of gaslighting her brother right along with her father earlier in the season.
I was abused pretty severely throughout my childhood and adolescence. As someone who survived that, I feel comfortable in saying that being an abuse survivor is an explanation, NOT an excuse. Can Claudia’s behavior be explained by how Viren has raised her, as well as her parents’ divorce? Sure. But does any of that excuse it? Absolutely NOT. Soren, too, is a victim of child abuse, and in fact was pretty severely emotionally abused by Viren (with Claudia’s help earlier in the season as I mentioned) in this season in particular. But he still saw what was going on, and still had the strength to stand up, say no, and walk away. He even offered a hand to Claudia when he left, explaining to her exactly what was going on, pointing out that she was going down the same path, telling her that it wasn’t too late for her and that she could leave with him . . . and Claudia turned him down. Whatever her reasons for it, Claudia knew what she was doing, and she made her decision. She has continued to make her decision, over and over again. Different people respond to abuse in different ways, yes, but that doesn’t change the fact that Claudia is still perfectly aware of what she’s doing when she decides to hurt others. She knew what she was doing when she ordered Runaan to be tied up so he could be used for “practical uses” in season one. She knew what she was doing when she said she wanted to take the red dragon back to Katolis “in pieces” in season two. She knew what she was doing when she chose to believe Viren and patronize Soren (thereby playing along with Viren’s gaslighting) early in season three. She knew what she was doing when she chose to stay with Viren in season three. She knew what she was doing when she tried to lead Ezran to his death at the end of season three, and she also knew what she was doing when she murdered someone to bring Viren back to life at the end of season three. Claudia’s actions, regardless of whether it’s because she wants to please Viren or not, hurt others. And when your behavior leads to others suffering, saying “but I was abused!” doesn’t excuse what you’ve done. It can be hard for abuse survivors to break the cycle and to not let the trauma from their abuse negatively impact others around them. I’ve got diagnosed C-PTSD from mine, I’ve gone to therapy, I know. But it being hard still doesn’t excuse the damage done. It’s up to Claudia to make the decision to break away and to do better, just as Soren has done. Until she does, she will be held accountable for her actions, as she must be, as everyone is. TL;DR: As an abuse survivor myself, I’d really like it if people would stop using “she’s a victim of abuse” as a way to excuse away her behavior, because those of us who have survived abuse are still fully functioning people capable of making our own decisions, and the trauma we’ve undergone does not at all excuse us from the consequences of our behavior when said behavior negatively impacts (or in Claudia’s case, hurts/kills) other people.
To all of you who keep shitting on Claudia for knowing what’s happening is wrong and still “choosing evil”, here’s a reminder that
It’s really fucking hard when you love someone and so badly want to support them unconditionally through anything but deep-down disagree with what they’re doing, no matter the healthiness or specific type of relationship (friend, family, loved one, etc.)
Claudia is a victim of emotionally abusive, scapegoat-model child parenting and likely has to live with a constant pressure to comply with her father’s demands in fear of slipping through the cracks and falling out of favor somehow (as model-children often do)
#the dragon prince#claudia#meta#also her sense of ''familial obligation'' doesn't seem to stretch to her brother when he tries to get her to go with him#but OK#(and no - i wouldn't)#(like Soren I'm a Gryffindor)#(I don't think sticking by family is Right when they are so clearly doing Wrong)#(that's a Slytherin's take - a.k.a. Claudia's - not mine)

Headcanons for ptsd nightmares for each character post season 3?
rayla’s are canon but here’s the headcanons for the main five kids anyway (tw for trauma, ptsd, etc.?)
rayla
seeing her loved ones entrapped in the ice and being unable to save them (her mother, father, runaan, and callum, per canon, but honestly ezran, zym, and ethari too as hc)
drabble of a nightmare rayla has about the first time she met callum
dreams where she keeps falling off the pinnacle and dies with viren / the wings don’t work and callum dies too
tends to be more related to anniversary trauma but her having nightmares about katolis somehow Ghosting her too (so she literally has no place to go)
like just basically everything that happened to her in “through the moon” in her dreams and in the portal itself tbh
she tends to wake up with aching pains in her wrist that had the binding on for longer
ezran
his nightmares tend to feature either the egg prominently, since he felt so responsible and attached to it right away, or his father’s death and how he had no real clue it was happening but in reality was just in the courtyard outside
frequent nightmares as king of assassins coming for him again finishing the job this time around that makes him wake up in cold sweat
all three of the trio have dreams that feature drowning but ezran and callum in particular
ezran only processing how terrifying being in the dungeons was well after the fact and a lack of sunlight featuring in a lot of his dreams (sometimes tied in with the drowning)
don’t even get me started on the nightmares related to viren in 3x09
bait doubles as a therapy toad
after nightmares if soren’s on guard duty, ezran will go out into the hallway to sit with him and often falls asleep leaning against the crownguard
callum
he tends to have panic attacks over nightmares, but the latter are still fairly common
he’ll often be transported to post-s1 when he didn’t have the primal stone, but ezran (under the ice) and rayla (falling or by soren and claudia) die while or because he’s “helpless” to do anything about it
drowning and falling for obvious reasons
having his magic taken from him - also plays into having his voice stolen by viren again, sometimes warps into having his breath stolen (the way he saw in the 3x08 flashbacks) which all feed back into the anxiety over breathing thing
a lot of his nightmares have him trapped, somehow, unable to move and spring into action
yelling “dad” in the tower in 1x03 comes back often, although his feet are sometimes encased in ice or tar or chains
his first ever nightmare was imagining how his mother died and it’s the most reoccurring one
soren
his only nightmare is really about stabbing viren, as nothing could horrify him more than that
sometimes, though, the dream will shift and he’ll have let viren stab ezran, blood spurting, and his father looks at him and smiles, teeth sharp. “i’m proud of you, my son.”
he hates those dreams most of all, and has a hard time looking at ezran the next day, and inevitably stress eats jelly tarts at least a little.
claudia
her worst nightmare is a memory, of finding viren’s corpse with his head smashed open on the rocks, limbs bent at wrong angles
dragging the dead body somewhere safe and then finding a barely alive soldier (or luring an injured one in) to murder is a close second
sometimes she dreams that soren stabbed her, instead
(she still doesn’t know how to feel about those)
