Welcome to my Radiostatic/Voxal Fic Rec List! ^_^ This will include romantic, platonic, and/or queerplatonic Radiostatic fics (and admittedly probably a couple of Radiosilence fics, too).
I will keep updating this periodically as I read more fics, so feel free to check back every once and a while! I'll reblog it when I update it, plus make a note with the date at the top. Trust me, this is by no means a complete list; there's fics I still want to add to this that I just haven't gotten to yet. I just decided to go ahead and post it anyways, because if I kept waiting until I ran out of fics to rec I'd probably be working on this forever.
These are not in any particular order; I'm going by both my Bookmarks list on AO3 and my memory of fics I forgot to bookmark. I also tried to make notes on what fics were written before season 1 released, but I might have missed some, so keep that in mind.

Radio Healed the Video Star by Aspiring_Forest_Witch
Summary: Alastor comes across an unconscious and battered Vox while out on one of his strolls. He feels compelled to bring him back to the hotel.
Notes: 98% of this fic was written before season 1 was released, so keep that in mind, because there's obviously going to be inconsistencies with canon. It's nearly finished (at least according to the author's notes in the latest chapters, I think). I suggest pacing yourself with this one - it's nearly 700k words long. I ruined a good sleep schedule staying up to get through it. (So worth it though.) There are quite a few OCs in later chapters, but they're such good OCs. You fall in love with them just as much as the canon characters, I swear. I would die for Verity and the Trio.

Summary: Ever since he met Alastor, Vox has been having raunchy dreams about the deer. Those dreams suddenly stop when Alastor disappears. For seven years, he's free of the guilt, of the shame brought on by his unconscious desire.
Until Alastor comes back, and Vox is plagued by a new dream the same day he finds out about the news. This time, however, something is distinctively different about how the deer is acting.
Notes: Author tagged for light angst, but ngl the ending did not feel like 'light' angst to me lol. Hurt in a good way.

Technically features Staticmoth but it's not the focus as much as Radiostatic (which honestly has a relationship status of ??? not romantic but also not friendship or even strictly enemies...just...Alastor and Vox). When Asmodeus stops by the Pride Ring to visit the Morningstars, the Vees are able to make a deal to host a pop-up shop of the incredibly popular Lust Ring establishment, Ozzie’s, bringing it to the Pride Ring for the first time.
When Vox and Alastor both attend the restaurant’s opening night, long repressed sparks fly, forever changing their relationship.
Notes: Because of the pacing of this (sex first romance later), I feel like this is the Radiostatic equivalent of Femalefonzie's Freak-A-Zoid (a really good Staticmoth fic). This is hands down one of the most romantic Radiostatic fics I've read. ^_^

Summary: Post-Finale. The Hotel finds Alastor right on the front lawn, unconscious and bleeding, still injured from Adam's blade. While he recovers, all of Hell scrambles to find out who his mysterious rescuer is.
Meanwhile, Vox tries not to freak out that he might have accidentally made a soul bond to save that deer asshole's life. All he had wanted to do was to scope out the ruins of Alastor's radio tower. Fuck him for being curious, he supposed.
Notes: This fic has me in a CHOKEHOLD. I love the characterizations so, so much. Manages to fit in humor alongside the angst. One of the best fight scenes I've ever seen put into words. Curtailed really took Vox and Alastor as characters and planned out a cool fucking fight scene using their unique abilities. I automatically love anything tagged with "one fell first but the other fell harder" lol.

Summary: “I say, good fellow, what are you doing on the ground like that?”
The voice was perky, cheerful, and bright. It had a crisp mid-Atlantic accent, the kind Vox remembered being all the rage for stage and film performers back when he first entered the broadcast industry. The diction was crystal clear with every sound enunciated separately to maximise clarity, the consonants clicked and the vowels were broad. It was a performer’s voice.
A voice for radio.

... Five times Vox and Alastor danced and one time Vox and Alastor didn't.
From their first meeting through their friendship, to their enmity and fighting. From infatuation to yearning to animosity. Dancing is a partnership, is it not?
Notes: Each chapter so far has been a different type of dance, which is really neat. Especially chapter 2. ^_^ That said, there's a feeling of impending doom, knowing what happens to their relationship eventually... Not saying that as a deterrent but just a comment on how I felt while reading it lol. It's very sweet, which is why it hurts to think of future chapters. 🙃
Days Long Past by Momo52
Summary: All sinners of hell bore some physical marks of how they lived and died. Some physical manifestations were more obvious while others were subtle. Vox was not an exception to this rule.
While his television head was an obvious indication of his life while on Earth, the mark he bore from his death was far more subdued. Luckily enough, his shame was easily concealed behind a high collar. Unfortunately, he is just as well known in his afterlife as he was in his life. As such, trying to make everyone believe that he is so much stronger than what his death implies is a constant battle. He only wished that he wasn’t the hardest one to convince.
Notes: I think platonic Radiostatic is the endgame here. Still pretty early in the story, but I'm really liking this author's depiction of Vox and Alastor's pasts. Heed the tags. There are heavy subjects such as suicide (very big theme for Vox's pov) and period-typical racism (in Alastor's past) present in the story.

Summary: In the aftermath of Alastor and Vox's electrifying on-air showdown, Vox finds himself unusually rattled. His usual suave demeanor is slipping, much to his cohorts' amusement – and concern. Velvet can do little more than roll her eyes at his antics. Valentino, on the other hand, is convinced that all Vox needs to do is get fucked and relax.

Nun-thing Like You've Ever Seen Series by A_Cypress_Coffin
Summary: Alastor, the feared radio demon with more blood on his hands than most of hell combined, wasn't always as we imagine him. There was a time where instead of a dapper suit and smile he donned a simple vow and habit. That didn't last of course, but the journey is quite something.
Notes: This author has a great sense of humor, lmao. I enjoyed the unique headcanons for Alastor's backstory. The tag that hooked me: "Accidentally becoming a better person through bad domming and found family".
Empathia by The_Oblivious_Swallow
Summary: Creating new technology is boring, sex is physically unappealing, the other Vee’s are so annoying, annoying, annoying! Even Vark, his baby, his pride and joy, doesn’t stir the same joy in his heart like he should.
So, Vox had concluded that it had to go. For his sake.
Notes: Contains Staticmoth, but Radiostatic seems like the endgame (I write this as there is one chapter still left). Really interesting idea. I love Vox.exe so much. ;-;

as homestuck gets older and becomes more and more of a period piece i think it’s really interesting to see how continuations and fanworks take different approaches to maintaining that or not.
and i don’t want to outright say one is superior to the other. i think if you can find ways to introduce aspects of more contemporary pop culture or politics or technology into homestuck as a framework and still make it an interesting intentional choice then that’s a big achievement and not something to be scoffed at just by virtue of it being divergent from homestuck proper.
i think in a lot of ways it can keep it fresh and add a layer of relatability to the fans that grew up on it. after all, i think hussie was intending to make (or perhaps just coincidentally happened to make) homestuck relatable to his particular demographic of young adults on the internet in the late 2000s / early 2010s. i think rereading homestuck in my 20s really solidified this to me that homestuck was not intended to be a story about kids for kids but rather a story for adults about childhood and growing up. it’s funny that it wasn’t more obvious to me back then, or maybe i did pick up on it but i just didn’t really think about it all that much? because it’s so obvious. there’s so much 80s and 90s kid nostalgia in it and the tropes that the characters portray were already outdated or at least didn’t even really exist like they used to by 2009. and in many ways the characters themselves outgrow their own tropes and then later acknowledge it in the work itself both as time progresses and the narrative develops into something more complex and the characters become increasingly multi-dimensional.
i guess it’s just an interesting question to me. is having content in a story that will indefinitely age the work a “good” or “bad” choice? and several years down the line, will we be able to tell what choices were intentionally made so that it would one day be reflective of the state of technology / political landscape / pop culture at the time?
artists who set out to make their work as timeless as possible do kind of miss out on the opportunity to be a time capsule later on. or just generally representative of the climate it was created in, which is something that i think a lot of us can both appreciate but also find pretty unsavory about homestuck proper (cough dancestors cough) but then can i really say i wish those unsavory parts of homestuck didn’t exist? idk. they aren’t fun to read but i like that they make me think critically about the flaws of that particular part of internet history.
politics aside i think the fact that there’s a homestuck panel that incorporates vine is so cool. because it sort of inadvertently swallowed up a piece of internet history that would come to disappear into its already massive time capsule of media and pop culture and hussie didn’t even know. it’s just cool to me idk.
at the same time i think younger artists and writers that really prioritize keeping homestuck grounded in its era of internet and even going so far as to honor the nostalgia of an older generation is something i really admire and appreciate. and this is something that is becoming more common as homestuck ages (and becomes more of a period piece etc etc). i often find myself at a crossroads between exploring contemporary elements in my work and trying to emulate homestuck’s original tone and time period for the sake of preserving that integrity. like man. i could go on about this for such a long time because i feel like it’s just a really interesting discussion to see what we weigh as a meaningful divergence and refreshing change from homestuck proper vs what compromises the (for lack of better phrasing lol) “feels like homestuck” factor.
i think the discussions about sexuality and gender identity towards the end of comic and then further in the epilogues is an obvious example of this. hussie didn’t necessarily shy away from nuances of gender and sexuality but he didn’t really address them outright with labels either for the majority of homestuck proper until the end when other writers got involved. in early act 6 dirk is explicitly stated as gay (insert disney diversity win meme blah blah blah) but the character himself, which i feel like is an interesting reflection of hussie and homestuck’s general feelings about the topic of identity and labels (if i may speculate lmao), considers the act of labeling his sexuality as sort of this out of date, irrelevant thing in the grand scheme of things. whether that be in reference to who he is or what’s going on in the comic or a more metanarrative choice of hussie’s. some people interpret this to be a kind of admission of shame or maybe dirk just being pretentious but i personally interpret this as hussie kind of just being like. i don’t really want to spend too much time Talking about characters being gay i just want them to exist in the story and Be Gay. similarly to how the trolls don’t have a concept of sexuality in the same way the human characters do. it gives hussie an opportunity to have characters do Objectively gay things, from the reader’s perspective, without having to spell out their relationships to their own sexualities by real societal standards in the work itself when he was clearly more interested and comfortable talking about the trolls’ relationships to their fictional societal ones. and i think as a writer i find that pretty fair. (and yeah yeah i know another aspect of dirk’s whole deal is that he’s from the future so of course he would say that / the trolls are from another planet and all of this is in comedic foil to john i am not a homosexual egbert as the protagonist but i digress. idk i’m really only speculating here and maybe projecting lol)
bc tbh i also kind of shudder at the thought of writing gay characters who are always expected to spell out their identities to the audience when i’d rather just have them Do Actual Gay Things. (using gay as an umbrella term for lgbt+ yada yada). personally i’d rather have a scene where a character binds their chest to reveal an aspect of their gender presentation rather than feel obligated to spell out their relationship to their identity in words and explicit labels and also describe exactly how they Feel About All That. not because i want to cop out on representation and have their identities be totally open to interpretation necessarily, but more-so because i think it becomes exhausting sometimes as a gay person myself to have to keep acknowledging a character’s State of Differentness as obviously as possible every time i put a gay person in a piece of art.
not that i don’t find narratives that exclusively or heavily talk about and center themselves around identity and being in a State of Differentness in very outright ways important. to me that’s something very different and meaningful in completely different ways that can’t be accurately compared here. there are plenty of homestuck fanworks that make discussions of gender and identity a large priority that i think are extremely meaningful and one of the biggest reasons why i came back to homestuck after all these years and still really love the community of artists and writers that engage with it in this way. i think it’s an extremely wonderful thing, especially because with the homestuck community so niche, it really feels like a group of people spreading art that is, by a large majority, by gay people and for gay people. but in narratives that are not specifically centered around that, or has not centered themselves about that previously (like homestuck several acts into the comic) i can totally see how it comes across as off-putting. i think sometimes there’s a slippery slope with bigger projects with a large audience where the existence of gay characters in the work start to read as teaching tools for non-[insert identity here] or virtue signaling. i.e. it stops feeling like media that the reader can identity with as a gay person and more like media that is trying to represent gayness “accurately and positively” for a straight reader (or perhaps a gay reader who is completely new to their identity and appreciate this kind of easy-to-swallow and comfortable introduction). i find that in cases like this, the “representation” more often than not falls into the pitfall of being extremely generalized and sterilized or even stereotypical. which is a whole conversation in itself. bc when an identity is always easy to digest and understand, it risks reducing this character to the identity itself. water is wet i guess lol. idk it’s just a tricky balance. but definitely something i think about a lot when i’m engaging with contemporary homestuck fanwork.
long aside but. all of this to say. i just find it interesting to see how homestuck, as a kind of specific multimedia form of art and storytelling online that seemed to set a new precedent for the webcomic format at large, has taken on a genre of its own like any piece of art does that is unique and off the beaten path in its execution. idk it just makes me think of art history in general. like it’s fascinating to me to see something like homestuck which was once very new and fresh to me become a piece of art that has aged enough to open discussion about approaching the framework of homestuck in either a traditional or contemporary way. as a continuation or a fanwork or an homage. i guess the only point i’m trying to make here is that i don’t think one is better than the other and there’s something i appreciate about both.
i feel like i’m kind of avoiding the elephant in the room here which is that there’s a lot of discussion going on right now about maintaining consistency with homestuck proper in the current continuation with homestuck2 and that’s sort of a whole other can of worms i don’t really want to get into. but i would like to acknowledge how interesting it is that these discussions really obviously highlight how fast memes get “stale” nowadays in the current state of social media and everything seems to exist in a perpetual state of blink-and-you-miss-it virality. i really sympathize with the homestuck2 team who i’m sure are feeling a huge amount of pressure to strike a balance between making something refreshing / relatable to the current homestuck audience and also maintaining the “feels like homestuck” factor. all the while attempting to fulfill as many reader wishes as possible within reason. (not to mention the standard of “reason” being extremely subjective) it’s not an easy thing to do and definitely a hugely different creative process than the one hussie went through during early homestuck days. each with their own complicated hoops to jump through in terms of Making Art People Will Engage With.

I could never say how these two get together but in terms of what I like to read (and don't get enough of) I always ALWAYS want Arthur rescuing Alfred so that would be fun to think about...
Also, it kind of goes against any previous "Arthur badly courting Alfred" headcanons that I've previously talked about but recently my mind has flipped to a different relationship scenario between Arthur and Alfred.
Arthur is still a horndog who has way more sex than anyone expects (except Francis, who has been accidentally Arthur's best friend for many years).
Alfred, on the flipside, is either a virgin or someone who has sex very very rarely. Exclusively into men (does he know?), very demisexual. Doesn't have much interest in sex, but this is because he's either never been a good match with the men he's had sex with or, if he's a virgin, it just doesn't seem like it'll be that interesting.
Arthur has never seen Alfred as someone to be sexually interested in BECAUSE he's so busy living in the past aka wishing for the times that Alfred was a child.
Alfred is the one who has been in love with Arthur since before his revolution. I like the headcanon people have that his bid for independence was his attempt at getting Arthur to see him as an equal. (It doesn't work.)
It's near-modern times. Maybe late 90s or early 2000s, Alfred is VERY used to unrequited love. He and Arthur are... cordial, but they have different circles.
It's something that hurts Alfred a lot. How Arthur was never interested in Alfred when he grew up. Arthur only ever wanted a colony - and apparently Alfred wasn't even a colony Arthur considered important. He knows Arthur and India were together for a long time, and Alfred sees the longing looks they still throw at each other. She tells Alfred she's completely over Arthur, but how can you date someone for 50 years* and look at them like THAT and have it be "nothing"?
Then we have one of the bits that changes for me, depending on what fic I want. Something needs to happen to get Arthur to see Alfred as he is. I've talked about this before, but in previous posts I've always gone: friends -> fall in love -> get over revolution hang ups -> end up together. NOW, for England, I want to change it up to: get over revolution hang ups -> friends/fall in love (these two are interchangeable to me for England) -> lovers. Meanwhile, Alfred's journey is: fall in love -> everything else (I find his journey can be more flexible).
SO what can make Arthur get over himself? I think it would need to be something big that'll shake him up a little. Alfred-in-distress is one way. Arthur realises how much he wants to save Alfred-the-Nation, and not just who Alfred-the-Colony ended up being.
OR, with the jealousy theme we've been having: another Nation starts pursuing Alfred, and Arthur is forced to see Alfred as an object of desire for someone else, which then jiggles something loose inside him and allows him to see Alfred as someone who is incredibly desirable.
Alas, in the new ... dynamic? Timeline? that I have for these two, Arthur doesn't do any wooing - even when he does fall for Alfred, or becomes jealous of others wanting Alfred, he'll desperately want that shit HIDDEN, and will be glad Alfred's oblivious.
Them actually ending up together needs to somehow happen without planning. At this point in time I've thought myself into a corner with these two. The world might need to be near-ending before the feelings get squeezed out in the open.

BL and it’s Shoujo grandma
In the last few years a lot of people have entered the fandom from different pathways and don’t know its history and origins. This post is an effort to clarify some of the whys and the hows of how the genre and industry came to be in the way they have. In this post I want to talk about BL and its connection to Shoujo manga through their tropes.
We all know to some degree (and if you don’t you will now) that BL came from the more traditional romance manga genre: Shoujo. 
Today, BL is its own independent genre, so many people might not know that a lot of what is characteristic of BL, is an evolution or a trace from its Shoujo grandmother. After all, romance is romance, and our hearts flutter very easily with the same tropes over and over again. 
We must also take into consideration that everything in this life influences each other so the limits between genres will never be cristal clear. There is no clear line between Shoujo and BL... but the ambiguity is part of the charm. 
Please be remiended that this is my own thoughts on the matter. It’s a hypothesis I have come up with based on my readings but do not take it as gospel. Anyone and everyone is welcome to add to this post and correct any errors, or comment their own takes on the topic.

Shoujo, as the Romance Manga Genre by definiton, comes from Japan. Even though it is not the only source of romance content, I believe that it has had one of the biggest influences over the mainstream asian romance media. Which, I believe, has a lot to do with the recent history of the region.
First, a little bit of history and context (and some speculation) 
The after effects of  WW2 
Well, Japan’s imperialism and war against the west makes it occupy a big part of the countries of southeast asia and “during this period, GDP in most Southeast Asian countries fell by half; 4.4 million civilians died prematurely; severe shortages of food and goods affected almost all Southeast Asians; and many lived in fear of draconian military rule” ( World War II and Southeast Asia Economy and Society under Japanese Occupation, by Gregg Huff) yes this post has citations people
Overall, Southeast Asia faces economic difficulties, social and ethnic unrest, and political struggles through much of the mid-twentieth century. By the 1980s, conditions have improved, but the “Asian financial crisis” in the late 1990s is a serious setback for the region (source)
All of this to say, that it makes sense that, in such a landscape, it was Japan who, after the American Occupation was the one country with the means to produce and eventually export entertainment. The US wanted to successfuly avoid any resurgance of imperialism and a base in the east on their side for the cold war, and other subsequent wars. This special attention helped the stability and economy of Japan in the long term (compared to all the other countries that had been under its rule).
Manga and Shoujo 
More or less at the same time manga as we know it today started (with Osamu Tezuka, aka the god of manga) around the 50′s. 
First made by men then by women around the 60′s, Shoujo was the genre “for girls” in opposition to Shounen, that was “for boys” (these labels just inform of the content and tropes of the stories you read, there are many other genres but I’m trying to make this short). Women authors took control of the stories that were being told to women audiencies, taking into account what interested them at the time: gender roles, sexuality and romance, among others. 
To me, the most interesting time period for Shoujo after the initial 60′s/70′s (ie, The Rose of Versailles) is the 90′s/early 2000′s (ie, Sailor Moon, Magic Knight Rayearth, Ouran High School Host Club, etc... My favorite shoujo manga come from this time, really really recommend reading some). Which coincidentally happens around the same time as manga’s worldwide boom and expansion. 
How has Shoujo influenced asian media? 
The 80′s/90′s was when manga arrived to the US, and subsequently to the rest of the world. Depending on the country manga became popular at different times, however by the end of the 90′s it was a success worlwide.

Why I think shoujo manga has had one ot the biggest influences over romance media in Asia
Shoujo manga has been adapted into live action so, so much. Many memorable doramas were mangas first. Boys Over Flowers being the most prominent example of this (we will come back to it later). 
Imo, Shoujo was able to explore a certain amount of themes that interested women at the time, and through manga’s popularity and expansion, those themes came with tropes and ended up becoming the backbone of the genre, influencing other romance media in general. But it has also been influenced by the mainstream trends of tv and interests of the public as it evolves according to the demand. The name does comes from its target demographic. 
Some of the most typical themes we find in shoujo are: 
Interpersonal relationships between characters concentrating on the interaction of their emotions and a lot of inner monologue, aka romance
Gender
Sexuality,
Fashion,
etc...
One of the interesting things here -- going back to the historical context I gave before -- is that Japan’s Constitution (1947), that was made which the US’s supervison, enabled a bigger equality between men and women. Which might be one of the reasons why “characters that defy traditional roles and stereotypes surrounding gender and sexuality have been a central motif of shōjo manga since its origins.” 
General Romantic tropes we find in Shoujo
Romance being one of the main themes of Shoujo, it is inevitable that a lot of what we consider romantic will also be a Shoujo trope. Many of these are just inherent to any romantic theme. What influenced Shoujo or was influenced by Shoujo?  It is hard to tell. Nevertheless, I will do my best to do some sort of categorization. 
General romantic behaviour tropes: kabedon, accidental kiss, feed me, sucking on wound, temperature check, indirect kiss, lap pillow, shirt tug, hair kiss/touch, monster-in-law ...
Other tropes include, not limited to romance but pretty common: we got together kiss/sex, drunken acts, I can’t control myself/I’m a man too, overnight trip, miscomunication, physically hurt/sick moment where they get taken care of, ...
Here are some of the most typical shoujo tropes:

How many times have we seen a scene under the rain, where the use of an umbrella was made very romantic? Or an icy, emotionally closed off man being melted down by a warm woman’s love?
Others shoujo specific tropes: sponge bath, drying hair with a towel, snuff cheek kiss, indirect kiss, unconscious kiss, kiss them to make them take their medicine, bitchy girl rival (because mysoginy), violent defense of loved one, he belongs to everyone (mysoginy and girl rivalry again), accidental meet cute (library/street corner), gender bender, woman dressed up/mistaken as a man, ...
How many shows came to your head (queer or not) while you were reading that list of tropes? A lot of them you know or have seen many times in kdramas, jdramas, cdramas, thai dramas, etc... Probably some of them you didn’t know were a common trope.

To exemplify the influence of Shoujo Manga on the Romance Media...
Let’s talk Boys Over Flower/ Hana Yori Dango/ Meteor Garden/ F4
Boys Over Flowers (or Hana Dan) is the best example to see the influence of Shoujo tropes in Asian romance, since it has been adapted many times, and is still being milked to this day. 
Contrary to popular belief the taiwanese Meteor Garden did not come first, the manga did. Followed by: the japanese live action movie (1995) >> the anime (1996) >> taiwanese series (s1&2, 2001-2002) >> japanese series (s1&2 + movie, 2005) >> korean drama (2009) >> chinese Meteor Garden (2018) >> japanese spin off Hana Nochi Hare (2018) >> F4 (2021). 
We find all the tropes in BOF: 
love triangle, popular x unpopular, umbrella under the rain, cold ml x warm wl, rich x poor, trapped in an elevator, sick boy, accidental kiss, unfortunate accident that brings you closer, monster-in-law, I leave you because I love you, he belongs to everyone... and many others. 
The overwhelming success of BOF, and it’s many reboots and adaptations made the shoujo tropes a staple of the romance genre (at least in Asia). 
 How does BL appear in all this?
Shoujo and gender and sexuality
BL (or Yaoi or Shounen-ai) started as one of the subgenres of Shoujo (others being Josei (more mature), Horror, Teen’s Love(erotica), Moe, etc). It was a variation on the hetero notion of romantic love, hence the clear paralelism with the gender binary. It slowly started integrating actual queer dynamics later on. The genre in itself has evolved a lot as it has broken free from the Shoujo mantle. It was very very different in the 70's (when it started) to the 2000's (when the hetero style of relationships and dynamics was at its most popular in QLs) to now.
The particular thing about Shoujo is that, besides creating a subgenre about exploring homsexuality, they explored gender and gender roles a lot. Women disguising themselves as men, or characters that did not identify with their assigned gender were and are still very common. Starting with Princess Knight to The Rose of Versailles to Ouran High School Host Club. We see this trope a lot in live action dramas like: Hana Kimi, Coffe Prince, Bromance, Secret Garden, You’re Beautiful, etc...,  And all the historical k-dramas with women disguised as men (Sungkyunkwan Scandal, Scholar Who Walks the Night, Love in the Moonlight, The King’s Affection). Besides it being a theme that clearly interests female audiences, other possible influences on the growing of media exploring this theme might be: the Takarazuka Revue, the newfound equality of sexes thanks to the japanese constitution, and trying to break free of gender roles and societal expectations through media. 
I kinda see it as an accident that shoujo manga authors ended up making queer content. They were questioning social expectations but I don't think they even knew that there were queer people out there to be appealed by it. 
As a quick recap of BL themes through its history, we went from:
the tragic and traumatized european pretty boys (Kaze to Ki no Uta) of the 70′s to
the gay for you, hetero like uke/seme, with problematic content for the sake of drama but with happier endings (Junjou Romantica) of the 2000′s to
the more realistic, featuring characters from the LGBT community variety of content we have now (Given)
BL also eventually gave birth to Bara/Gei Comi (gay comics, by gay men for gay men. Check Gengoroh Tagame’s works to know what I mean), and in some way GL (or Yuri).
BL tropes
Do we find the general romantic tropes in BL? Yes, we do. However there are some that are inherent to BL. Also, as Thailand finds itself at the head of the current BL boom, we also find these tropes to be influenced by thai culture. 
Bishonen boys (beautiful androginous men), uke/seme, rape, gay for you, age gap, psycho boys, ...
I leave here ABL’s posts on the BL characteristics by country, other bl tropes, and Thai BL and tropes. Honestly, they’re the expert on all tropes BL. 
As I have consumed all types of romance media, I can hardly tell what tropes are inhenrent to what genre. However, tropes that are inherent to BL would be:
Many of these are related to sex, which is one of the main themes of BL. There is a lot to be said about sex in BL, particularly in its relationship to violence. There is also a lot of BL that features intentionally toxic relationships and unhealty dynamics. Which is the darked side of the genre, to be explored in another occasion.
Coming back to our main theme, here is an example of the connection and evolution of a shoujo trope into a BL tropes.

Rooftops belong to the gays now and it should be known. It is a very well known trope used all over genres, but it is has become an very significative one in BLs.

Final Toughts
While preparing for this post I decided to research a little about SE Asia’s recent history, as I have been made aware recently that not only thailand is rising in it’s entertaiment production, but Cambodia is rising in the music sphere. All these industries that are sprouting from Southeast Asia, made me wonder why. And my elation when I realized there was a reason why! It all started to get into place in my head.
I have wanted to make this post for a while. In a lot of the conversations we’ve been having in the fandom around shows recently made me realize that a lot of the new fans get into BL without having encountered Asian dramas before or just partially. Lots of the analysis made and the questions posed around BL shows have a partial answer in the context of how the genre came to be and how its intertwined with every other piece of Asian media. 
The purpose of this post is to give more detail into how BL is influenced by a lot of the general romance genre, which a lot of the fandom might not know in depth. I hope this clearifies some things for those who search to understand why this or that trope or action happen in a show where it might not make sense, or it might be out of place, or just strange. 
As Thailand media is growing, we see how they use what is popular in their favor, while adding a bit of their own personal culture to it. It’s interesting how we can see the kdrama or manga influences. And talking about it and questioning them makes me excited for more. 
This will be a series of posts. I have decided to make a post about the general history of BL. Which will be accompanied by another, smaller post where I want to talk about the Yaoi Debates (Yaoi Ronso) and the use of trauma and rape in BLs, as it has been a topic of conversation recently.

what happened to high school?
When I was young, I thought high school students were so cool and grown up. I watched as they started driving, dating, having sex, and going to parties and I couldn't wait to be that fun age. Now that I am in high school, where has the fun gone?
As people have realized, generations are starting to look younger and younger. When you imagine a senior in high school, you often don't imagine the people that I go to school with. Their baby faces haven't gone away and the growth spurts have not hit yet. Part of the appeal of high school is the feeling of adulthood and maturity, not only in the classes you take or your social endeavors, but in the way you look. I don't know if it's because there isn't as much of an age gap between myself and a senior in high school now, but when I was little, they just looked so old. I don't see that anymore. 
Also, technology is nowhere near new and exciting. It's a part of our everyday lives and I will resent that for the rest of my life. While it comes in handy for teaching and grading, and Google is a major plus, it shouldn't be our only source of school these days. I rarely get assignments on paper and honestly, I wish they were. I want physical copies and mementos from my high school days. Not to mention, I don't even have a real school identification card. It's in an app. 
When social media and technology was new and exciting, it acted as a third space for teenagers. Like malls and roller rinks in the eighties and nineties, Tik Tok, Instagram and Tumblr are the "hang-out spots" for teenagers in the late 2010s and 2020s. In the early to mid-2010s, teenagers still went to malls and roller rinks to hang with friends while also adjusting to the new online world. It was a place for teenagers to communicate their ideas and express themselves. Now it has become a part of everything. I almost never have conversations where someone doesn't whip out their phone mid sentence
Also, we have no defining trends for our generation. Social media has brought forth something called the microtrend. A song, make-up look or body type will be a trend for two weeks before out short-attention spanned peers decide it's not interesting or cool anymore and move on to something else. While the nineties had grunge and glamor and the eighties had acid wash denim and big hair, the 20s has....leggings? And Utah curls? What I mean is, when you think of the 1990s, a specific image comes to mind. Grunge music and dark eye make-up. When you think of the eighties you picture big curly hair and neon spandex. When you think of the 2020s, nothing in specific comes to mind because we can't decide on one thing. Nothing is interesting or cool enough anymore. We live in such a capitalist, consumerist society that once we engage in something too much, it becomes boring and we have to find something else. Social media and influencers only amplify that. I don't know if it's Gen-Z's push-back on being categorized or defined by anything, or if nothing is good enough anymore. 
And don't even get me started on the music. In the 20th-century, different music trends came and went. In the 70s hair metal and power ballads became huge. In the 80s glam metal, synth, and pop started to materialize and in the 90s alternative rock, grunge, nu metal, and boy-bands made their breakthrough. This overbearing control of the music industry made music a novelty and allowed teenagers to be a part of a subculture. When punk came about in the 70s and goth in the 70s and 80s, it allowed teenagers to interact with another and create relationships because of the subculture they identified with. This made high school the stereotypical version we see in 90s and early-2000s movies. The goths sit over here and the popular kids sit over there. Even in the 90s with grunge and the 2000s with emo. Though to come it seemed “clique-y”, it made making friends and self-expression more cohesive and less stand-out. Even into the early 2010s, those who liked pop punk, didn’t hangout with the kids who like mainstream pop or trap beats. 
With the rise of the influencer and easy access to higher paying or earning jobs, anybody can make music, even if they’re horrible at it. Content creators online put out singles or albums that sample the same beats as everybody else and have the same dense and shallow lyrics, where it is obvious they’re trying to sound deep and meaningful but they’re fully missing the mark. It’s hard to want to claim a genre or use a specific sound or style of music to identify your generation or simply the people you hangout with. New music doesn’t have that power anymore. New major music genres have not been pioneered since the 90s with grunge and nu metal. People that are making music aren’t creative and the creatives aren’t making music. 
The things people listen to and the way that they dress says a lot about them. For teenagers, it has said everything about them. However in the last ten years, social media and technology has ripped those ideals away from us. Nobody wants to be perceived as one thing. They want to be everything and nothing is good enough to define anybody anymore. Tik Tok has ruined the essence and the glowing aura that once was the teenager.

I’m gonna be real the TF2 fandom has a weird tendency to make posts where it’s like “(two characters of your choosing) kissing! Scout looks on in disgust in horror!” And it’s like. Weirdly uncomfortable, like it just feels like the same “being gay is gross and weird!!!” Humor that “peaked” in the late 90s early 2000/10s (and before that obviously, but was weirdly everywhere during then)
Ehh I don't actually think it's That big of a deal and I think ur really drawing a false equivalence. I think an important difference between "Scout looks on in horror at heavymedic sloppy makeout" posts now and "being gay is gross and weird!" jokes from the 90s is that in the latter, the gay people are the butt of the joke, while in the former, Scout is the butt of the joke. I do think at some point "homophobic Scout" can become a bit of a tired joke, I do hope we get over that soon, but most iterations of what I've seen that ur talking about will fall either into a "I hope this doesn't awaken anything in me"/"Scout is sexually repressed" type of joke OR a joke type similar to "kids being grossed out seeing their parents kissing", which is unrelated to anyone being gay (think "Scout is grossed out by the photos of Spy with his ma" as being the same kinda joke as "Scout is grossed out by heavymedic sloppy makeout" jokes from people who do the "Heavy and Medic are Scout's Gay Dads(tm)" thing). I think you're reallyyyyyy interpreting these kinds of jokes in bad faith lmao there is absolutely nothing similar in my opinion between idk. "Scout's entire team except him is in a polyamorous relationship and he didn't know" and "gay jokes from the 90s".

Heroes and Harmony AU
It's been a month since Leonardo, now known as L-Velvet, left his blue mask behind to pursue his true passion - a thriving R&B music career. With his smooth, soulful vocals and heartfelt lyrics, L-Velvet was quickly making a name for himself in the industry, much to the surprise and mixed emotions of his former teammates, the Mad Dogs. His debut album "Shattered Heart" had just dropped, showcasing his incredible vocal range and R&B sensibilities, drawing comparisons to the likes of Brian McKnight, the late Jesse Powell, Johnny Gill, Ginuwine, Tyrese and many other R&B singers and groups of the late 90's and early 2000's. The lead single "Don't Make Me Wait" had become an instant hit, resonating with listeners who connected to its themes of heartbreak and the agony of a crumbling relationship. L-Velvet's influences were evident in the track's emotive delivery and the lush, atmospheric production that enveloped his voice.
The Mad Dogs' first battle without Leo was a disaster, the team struggling to adapt to his absence and the loss of his strategic leadership. Donnie, Raph, Frida, and Mikey felt disjointed, missing the cohesion and harmony that Leo had provided. As L-Velvet's fame began to grow, so did his distance from his brothers and sister. They would occasionally video call him, but the conversation always seemed strained, L-Velvet's focus pulled in a hundred different directions by his burgeoning music career. The other 4 Mad Dogs felt abandoned, unsure of their future without their second oldest sibling to guide them.
Frida, the long-lost sister and former assistant of the villainous Big Mama, stepped up to become the new leader of the team. With her hint of sass and emphatic mind, she whipped the remaining Mad Dogs into shape, developing new battle tactics to compensate for Leo's absence. However, this also sparked a sibling rivalry between Frida and Donnie, the two would constantly butt heads over strategy and decision-making, their disagreements often leaving Raph and Mikey caught in the middle. Meanwhile, the villainous duo of Hypno-Potamus and Warren Stone continued to wreak havoc, their schemes becoming more elaborate and dangerous without the Mad Dogs operating at full strength.
L-Velvet was now living in a luxury hilltop home in LA, which according to him, is 10 times better than living in the sewers. With a home studio, a living room with a widescreen TV, and a breathtaking view of the LA city where he can see the Hollywood sign, L-Velvet had fully immersed himself in the glamorous world of the music industry. No longer tethered to the Mad Dogs and their battles, he could focus solely on his craft, crafting hit after hit and planning the next steps in his burgeoning solo career. Though he still cared for his siblings, L-Velvet had made the choice to leave that life behind, determined to make his mark on the R&B scene and cement his legacy as a true musical icon.
As for the Mad Dogs, they were struggling to find their footing without Leo's guidance. Donnie, Raph, Frida, and Mikey were all talented in their own right, but they had grown accustomed to Leo's strategic leadership and his ability to bring them together as a cohesive unit. Without him, they felt lost and disjointed, like a machine missing a crucial part.

First, I know you don't have a lot of knowledge on Adventure Time lore (at least I think..) so I'll probably be going on several smaller tangents and explanations of things so that the rest of what I explain makes sense. :3 If I get off topic, that's proooobably why. Second, the first "arc" of Reader's (my oc for anyone new here) story is heavily inspired by this fic, though I am currently rewriting it to be a bit more separate, and all of the later arcs are completely original. I like giving credit where credit is due, however.
OKAY! So now back to the actual question LMAO
In Adventure Time, there is a great war among humans somewhere in the 90's-2000's. It's a nuclear war that wipes out most of humanity and leaves a lot of radioactivity around, essentially creating an apocalypse for any surviving humans. In my au, this war takes place sometime in the late 90's. The seeds for Reader and Simon being in a relationship exist as early as the early 90's, though circumstances regarding the both of them being unable to further their education together prevent it from ever really going anywhere. Reader (who is still female presenting) struggles to keep up in the very male dominated field of anthropology and archaeology in the 90's while Simon easily finds his footing in doctorate programs. (He's cis in this au sorry Simon.. it just makes the most narrative sense.) Reader eventually loses contact with Simon as they drift away from each other and this is around the time that Reader goes missing, finding an ancient shrine and making a deal with a deity to survive the upcoming war. This is about 3 years before the nuclear fallout from the war. Meanwhile, Simon and Betty have met and the canon events of Fionna & Cake / Adventure Time are playing out for them! They find the Enchiridion (a magic book Simon was looking for to prove his studies on magical relics isn't bullshit), fall in love, get engaged, and this is around the time Simon loses contact with Reader. And then Reader's family reaches out to Simon. Reader has been missing and no one can find them. Betty comforts Simon during this time, but there isn't really much anyone can do. Eventually Simon finds the crown and becomes cursed, and Betty time travels 1000 years into the future to help save him like in the show. And we're back with Reader! Who accidentally overslept surviving the war by 800 years. They wake up and realize very quickly that they are (1) no longer human and (2) definitely not in the 20th century anymore... After a while they also learn they are immortal. About 200 years later, Reader is a successful healer, using 20th century medical practices and whatever they can find in centuries old texts. They've gotten quite the reputation as many families have been using their practice for generations, and rumors have spread that they can cure even curses (much to Reader's chagrin). This is when Betty, who is now going insane desperately trying to save Simon, visits their shop. Of course, when Betty learns that Reader can't, in fact, cure curses, she's pissed. They get into a big fight and Betty is banned from Reader's shop. The two don't interact again by the time Betty actually does save Simon from being cursed as the Ice King, and Reader never puts 2-and-2 together. To make a very long explanation a very short one, Betty saves Simon by fusing with a chaos deity named Golb, becoming Golbetty. She then returns to this void between universes, leaving Simon once again mortal but now all alone. 12 years later, Simon and Reader reconnect! They slowburn fall in love, but Simon isn't really over Betty, esp when it comes to wanting to save her. Simon is trying to reach Golbetty through an ancient shrine, but Reader is completely unaware of this. Reader is left in the dark when it comes to a lot about Betty, actually, but respects Simon's privacy. The two of them settle into life together after reconnecting after 1000 years, both having long accepted the other died in the 90's, and things seem okay for the most part...
WE'VE HIT ARC 2 WHO CHEERED
Okay so things aren't all that okay. Turns out becoming a weird pseudohuman fucks with your self-image and connection to humanity, who would have thunk! This isn't anything new for Reader, who already associated their being nonbinary/transmasc with being turned into a creature shortly upon settling in the Land of Ooo (tho: author's note, they were always nonbinary, it's just hard to accept that when you're already struggling to make a life for yourself in a male dominated career in the 90's. Reader is mega-coping.) But reconnecting with Simon kind of made it... worse. Sure, Simon was cursed for a while but he got out of it mostly human, where Reader is very much not human. They find themself comparing how they once were to how they are now and feeling inadequate for Simon. Simon tries his best to help, but there's only really so much he can do. Things only get worse when a witch comes along who claims to know exactly what kind of creature Reader is. Reader is a golb-beast, a rare (often only thought to be mythical) creature created by being cursed, or in some interpretations blessed, by Golb. Reader is the only one of their kind known in existence, and this witch worships Golb. Knowing magic, she is able to manipulate Reader's curse so that they attack Simon, almost killing him, and in the chaos of everything she kidnaps Reader. The captor (I need to name her..) has a mansion that is decorated with statues and artwork of Golb, think Catholic cathedrals, and she initially locks Reader in the basement where she has a dungeon of sorts. She's kind of really fucked up and treats Reader like an exotic pet she tamed rather than a sentient human and even goes as far as to only let them eat raw meat it's crazy. Reader keeps up hope that Simon will come for them but the captor tells them (a lie) that Simon ran away from them when they attacked him. He's scared of Reader being a beast and won't be coming back for them. While Reader doesn't believe this at first... the longer they're trapped the more doubt starts to set in. Meanwhile Simon is actually losing his mind trying to find Reader after healing from his wounds, but to little avail. It takes months before he even gets a real lead. Eventually he is able to rescue Reader but in the chaos a fire starts. A statue of Golb falls and crushes the captor, killing her instantly while Reader watches. It should feel good but... Reader is emotionally crushed. It takes them a long time to get used to being back in the normal world again. There's a lot more I didn't cover here bc it isn't too important to Reader and Simon specifically, but there's a lot Reader has to overcome. This entire situation really sets them back on feeling human and accepting themself as they are. This time, Simon can't even seem to really help them when they're at their worst.

Things to keep in mind when writing works set in other decades PART 2!

Culture
This part is a potential minefield, but it does bear commenting, so here goes.
Culture has shifted a lot between different decades. Especially the last fifty years.
A lot has happened in the past ten/fifteen years that would be unthinkable in the early 2000's, let alone the 70's, 80's, or 90's.
So, just keep in mind that we—as a society—are different now than we were then.
So, onto a less fraught topic: Pop Culture!
Make sure certain Pop culture things actually existed in whatever time your work is set.
E.G. social media (I consider this more pop culture than tech).
Prior to the late 00's, the only major "social media" was MySpace. Facebook wasn't a big thing until just before the 2010's, YouTube was brand new in 2004, our beloathed blue hellsite(affectionate) didn't exist until 2009, and Twitter(I will never call it anything else) 2013, and TikTok didn't spawn out of hell until 2016. Ergo, any works set before certain years should not have different combinations of these.
One should also check to see if certain books/movies/games/songs/tv shows were out too.
We fans can often know a lot about a LOT of things, and nothing is more jarring than seeing someone in a work set in the 2000's talk about watching a movie from years later.
Slang is something else to consider.
Unless it's part of a catchphrase or particular speech pattern, it can also be a bit jarring. That's why I often avoid using slang, when possible, because it is the quickest way to date a work.
This happened to the 2007 film Juno.
BONUS ROUND—Fashion!
Fashion is also part of pop culture and I gotta say, you really need to double check this too because it has fluctuated the most!
For example, with all the 80's nostalgia, I have to rain on parades because I've seen pictures of 80's fashion from family albums of the era, and the neon stuff they like to push as "totally 80's" was toward the END of the decade and overspilled onto the early 90's.
Again, Tl:Dr—Do the research if your work is set in our world, but not the current day, because it can really show in a bad way.

Week 6 (February 5th - February 12th)
Album: BLOOM by Troye Sivan Play Count: 4 Top 2 Tracks: Bloom (Track 4) Plum (Track 5)
Another library save for week 6 and it was a VIBE! I’m not new to this album, I’ve known and been into several tracks since it came out, but getting back into it and finding new stuff to enjoy was well worth it. He knows how to make people dance and fall in love with what he’s doing, but maybe even him. It’s enticing for sure. On that note, Seventeen (the opening track) makes me want to protect him from all the harm in this world.
PS: My CD player was iffy about when it would let me play this one, so I had to use Spotify for a few of the listens. That being said Spotify has the album tracks out of order, so to play it in order, you might want to queue them up instead of just pressing play.

Week 7 (February 13 - February 18th)
Album: Fortress (2000) by Sister Hazel Play Count: 4 Top 2 Tracks That Aren’t “Your Winter” Cause That Always Been A Favorite: Thank You (Track 3) Shame On Me (Track 7) Your Winter is one of my favorite songs of all time, shout out 10 Thing I Hate About You, so I was excited to dive into the actual album that song comes from. Now I knew they were country but Fortress drove that point home, especially the country of the late 90’s and early 2000s. It’s definitely giving high-waisted mom jeans, but also conversations on back porches with a guitar. I love the sound, it made me happy to listen to it and continues to prove how much I do like country music. Yoncé is Yoncé but this is where home is at.

Week 8 (February 19th - February 25th)
Album: From The Bottom To The Top (2000) by Sammie Always Play Count: 4 Top 2 Tracks: Crazy Things I Do (Track 4) I Like It (Track 2) When we talk about what is actually a throwback, this is the one for me, every single time. I remember being in elementary school and being so in love with Sammie because of this album. When I put it on I get that hint of nostalgia and all the words come back to me instantly. I have so much love for this album, however in my 30’s after so many listens, I just wanted to put on some GROWN FOLK music lol. There was also lines throughout different songs that I thought were repeats of one another and with it being almost a full hour long record, I might have just been getting lost. Again this album makes me so happy and any time I put it on it just works for my mood, but I don’t know that I could do this much binging of it again, at least not for a long while. But hey Sammie is still making music for me to crush on, so maybe that’s where I need to spend my time.
Side Note: I absolutely believe that tweens need more tween crush music and just more tween ish in general, cause there’s not enough of it and that solid in between stage is fading quickly. As long as they realize you can, not spend “every dollar to your name” on somebody at 10. Lol!

Week 9 (February 26th - March 3rd)
Album: Alright Still… (2006) by Lily Allen Play Count: 5 Top 2 Tracks: Littlest Things (Track 8) Not Big (Track 5) Alright Still… is like watching OG British Skins or even a little bit of the the BBC show Misfits. I think a lot of that came 1) from having seen both shows and 2) the music videos themselves. I didn’t even have to revisit the videos because when the song would play, the images would already be reeling in my head. I’m not gonna forget creepy puppets or smashing his vinyl records or even giving him laxatives lol. The full album listen was fun and only a little over a half an hour so it wasn’t a struggle getting to 5 listens, which I haven’t done in several weeks. It’s poppy with a little bit of that crude edge, so if you missed out or just want more from that era, go take a listen and tell me what a good time you had.
PS: The Littlest Things plays during one of my all time favorite romantic comedies and if you haven’t seen Celeste and Jesse Forever, I can’t recommend it enough. The first time I watched it, as soon as it ended, I immediately started it over. I loved it that much.

I dropped the show a long time ago but stumbled across this photo the other day and I can't help but find it amusing.
Back then in the late 90s-early 2000s there was a teen magazine published in Turkiye about college life, experiences, education etc. And I think this photo might be the perfect fit for the cover page. 
Just to give you an idea:

Or you know, those huge bilboard advertisements about health or insurance I don't know. *lol* This really have a poster value.
They had always this potential but with these lazy writers, you can never have that. The highschooler, youngster part of this show was one of the things that made them different from the other melodramas. The young actors have amazing chemistry for the messy group dynamics. (we had frenemies, enemies-to-lovers, a duet bonding, a family of choice) But they ruined this part and replaced it with an exaggerated and outdated sibling rivalry. Even the school set design seemed so casual. Before, the school was a lively place and used as a story tool. And now they are planning to write season 4 in which the characters will go to the university but this probably only means for the writers that they can write early marriages and stuff. Like, the only thing they can think about. Or you know, never ending money problems, 32846th work experience that goes wrong for the characters...They don’t even bother to write lines worth pondering for a while. The show turned into a big meaningless joke about three adult men and their weird love lines and deceptions...
I remember how the plot revolved around some characters, their relationships and the secrets that threaten their lives. I loved even with their sloppy writing style how they gave us some dialogues between Asiye and Doruk that mean something. Like the famous school bench scene where Doruk tried to comfort Asiye about Ömer’s birth secret. Or when they fought passionately like in the 22nd episode, they argued with the actual words that had an impact on the other. They were constantly evolving into their better selves but also still making mistakes. 
The writers aren’t very talented but I also think creativity has a limit when it comes to writing a 120 minutes length episode for 70+ weeks. Nobody can pull off it. It’s sad because one way or another the story they promised to give us is long forgotten and left aside.

Now That's What I Call Music! 49 2001 Pop / Teen Pop / Adult Contemporary / R&B / House / Hip Hop / UK Garage / Trance / Dance-Pop / Pop-Rock / Pop-Punk
Finishing out the week by continuing this little UK journey that I've been on recently with a trip back to the middle of 2001. Here we have a double-disc dispatch from the incredibly prolific and pervasive Now That's What I Call Music! series, which is an enterprise that Americans have been deeply familiar with since the late 90s, but Brits have actually known for far longer, since it originally exclusively launched in the UK in 1983, and proved very successful since jump.

Now, as you could probably guess, there are definitely similarities and differences between the US and UK versions of Now. One, UK installments from the main series are double-disc affairs, but US ones are only single-discs; and two, plenty of hits manage to chart in both places, but a lot of songs also never end up crossing the pond in either direction. And a good portion of the UK hits that don't make it Stateside tend to be electronic and dance tunes. Pretty much since the advent of the acid warehouse parties that took place in the UK during the late 80s, Brits have been far more receptive to that kind of stuff than the US has.
And that brings us to the first song that I really wanna highlight today: British duo Zero 7's totally blissed-out vocal downtempo classic, "Destiny," which features the voice of the one and only Sia. If you're an American, the first time that you were probably ever exposed to the facially-obscured South African superstar was when she dropped "Chandelier" in 2014. But other parts of the world had known her for a lot longer than that, and maybe if you had on the right adult alternative station in the US, or watched MTV2 at the exact right time, you would've caught "Destiny" too, but I think if you had asked 99% of Americans back then if they knew who either Zero 7 or Sia was, they'd have absolutely no idea. This tune is a simply terrific piece of smooth, acoustic guitar-led late 90s downtempo beauty, though, and with some dubby effects on it too, it makes for a real, immaculately melty, sink-into-the-bathtub kind of vibe 😌.
And on the pure dance tip, we've got a few sweet cuts, but nothing really quite hits like Roger Sanchez' "Another Chance." I gotta admit, I kind of somehow forgot about this jam altogether, but it's such a nice slice of early 2000s house, and I'm really thrilled to have been reminded of it again with this comp. Sanchez crafts a lot of this tune by sampling from Toto's 1982 soft rock power ballad, "I Won't Hold You Back," and that includes the voice of the group's lead singer, Steve Lukather, too, whose calm and reflectively plaintive words are made shimmery by Sanchez himself here 😎. "Another Chance" managed its way all the way to the top of both the UK singles and UK dance charts, but it did absolutely nothing in the US, which is a total shame!
Almost everything else that's good and/or fun on this album was also big in the US too, though, and those tunes in particular should give any American who remembers 2001—before that big, main event, of course—a very sweet nostalgia rush indeed. We have one-hit wonder Wheatus' "Teenage Dirtbag," blink-182's "The Rock Show," the different version of U2's "Elevation" that was on the Tomb Raider movie soundtrack, OutKast's "Ms. Jackson," Destiny's Child's "Survivor," Dido's "Thank You," Janet Jackson's "All for You," and Nelly's "Ride Wit Me." So a really fine array of classic, poppy bangers there.
But, folks, we also have to talk about the complete and utter schlock that's on here too, because despite how many enjoyable tracks that are on this thing, there sure are quite a lot of plainly bad ones as well. And most of it appears to be just straight-up British pop, which is not to be confused with the often very good rock genre of Britpop. To be clear, there are definitely superb British-made pop tunes from this early 2000s era, but this 49th installment in the Now series doesn't have any to offer; and I have no idea how or why Geri Halliwell aka Ginger Spice's totally limp cover of The Weather Girls' "It's Raining Men" ever got to be a #1 hit in the UK, but that shit is really e m b a r r a s s i n g, man. And a lot of the rest of this pop sounds like music that was specifically targeted at nine-year-old girls too, so, diabetics, beware, because this stuff is *really* treacly.
Always love to sift through these UK editions of Now because they tend to be a lot more eclectic than their US counterparts, and while putting up a double-disc with every installment increases the chances of getting more good tunes, I also understand that it also naturally opens the door for more crappy filler as well. But at the end of the day, I really can't resist a good chunk of the electronic and dance music that gets put on these things, so if I have to endure some uninspired Spice Girls solo singles along the way, then so be it 😅.

Had a dream that there was apparently a vampire dies ova back in 2012, but it honestly looked more like something that aired in the late 90s/early 2000's You might be thinking, "Didn't the manga start in 2015?" and yes. it did. But judging by the style of the ova, it was most likely the first attempt to revive a beloved manga from the 90s for a 10s audience. So in this dream universe, the vampire dies we know is actually a reboot, and this ova preceded the 2015 manga (essentially serving as a test to see if it would work for audiences nowadays)
The opening sequence had all the characters dance in place all across the screen with the castle as a background. the vibe of the castle was completely different though, because they weren't using purples for the dark yet, it was all done with black which made everything look more horror-esque Which was fitting, because the first 1/3 of the ova was actually a horror au short about Draluc coming home to the castle and his parents acting... off. After the opening (before the short started) there was a wall of text from the original creator addressing long-time fans and apologising for any inconvenience caused by out of characterness, lmao. The short was like. legit horror. it was actually fairly scary because the castle looked more like underground catacombs, and it was dark as hell in there, no windows anywhere.
I don't remember what the other part of the ova was about sadly, but the reason it was so different was because it was adapted to be for anyone, regardless of their knowledge of vampire dies. So they chose accessibility over accuracy. It was also a bit more serious overall, I'm guessing they toned down the humour for a broader appeal, or the reboot was kind of like... a teen titans go equivalent to the original
Everyone's designs were pretty much the same, just a bit less saturated (though that could've just been the video quality). The only one who looked marginally different was Manner who had reallllyyy long hair. like reaching up to his ankles long. It alternated between blue and pink and went down in a spiral (like a hair drill) maybe there was a bit of yellow in there too? and he had one of those 90s fluffy scrunchies in around the middle as well (a very big one)

hii love! so i've been thinking about what type of life i want to manifest and i literally can't decide between 2 so i wanted to ask someone else for their opinion: option 1: a ghibli-movie like life (especially like howl's moving castle if you've ever watched that) where i'm bascially a witch. this would be set in like the 19th century and in an european country (probably like switzerland or smth) option 2: a life in a big city. this would probably be in tokyo since i already live in japan anyways. i was thinking that this would be set in the early 2000s/late 90s. i was thinking it would kind of have the vibe of these teen/coming of age movies. i used to want to manifest option 1 and the switched to option 2, but now i'm starting to like option 1 again. the only problem is is that depending on what i chose, my whole persona (df, personality, vibe, etc.) would change. so, what do you think i should pick?
wait it'd be so fun if you combined the two! you know how in howl's moving castle there's that door and that kid pulls the lever and where the door opens up to changes? so you could have both, and you could just switch between the two whenever you'd like! so if you're feeling bored of option 1, you can just pulled a lever and go to option 2!
and maybe when you go through the door, your persona changes as well? kinda like how sometimes sophie looks different in different settings in the movie! i think that'd be super cool

Top 5 non-big three mecha (Gundam, Getter, Mazinger)
oh shit I forgot to answer this in a timely manner! Assuming you mean shows/games as a whole, not individual mechs? If thats not what you meant just tell me and I'll try and make a list of those as well. Anyways:
5) Martian Successor Nadesico: one of the first mecha I ever watched, and something I'll always respect for its ability to run both comedic and dramatic stories so intertwined without much unintended whiplash for the viewer. I ended up never finishing it due to IRL circumstances
4) Armored Core: While the settings are universally pretty dark by my standards, FromSoft's usual storytelling leaves things vague enough for me to tolerate it. Gen 2 AC greatly influenced how I feel a mech "should" move in a 3d space when I imagine one.
3) Patlabor: Like Nadesico, is a fascinating premise able to run both comedic and dramatic storylines, though Patlabor keeps them largely separated. A lot of the designs have that elusive "just unrealistic enough to be fun" quality to them that makes me find Real Robots so interesting. The soundtrack has quite a few hits as well. Didn't finish the TV series due to streaming services changing, but love the OVA and first 2 movies.
2) Macross Plus: A part of me wants to put the whole franchise here, but considering how variable the musical style, animation quality, and overall tone can get between different entries, I chose the one I'm most familiar with. Its mysteriously nostalgic to me, something about the music, something about that late 90's early 2000s era its from, I'm not fully sure.
1) Super Robot Wars Original Generations (Games, Not Shows): It almost feels like cheating, putting this here. SRW OG has a little of everything the mecha genre has to offer while remaining both legally and tonally distinct from all of it. But an aspect I love it for that I rarely hear talked about is how well it Gradually Escalates from a reasonably grounded (for a sci-fi) setting to the Rule Of Cool Shenanigans its more well known for without the player really feeling a big disconnect until more than a few games into the saga. And for something that is still technically a crossover, that is no small feat. Also the soundtrack is consistently incredible, especially comparing the GBA versions to other games on the system.
(Honorable mentions to the Front Mission series and Dai Guard, FM doesnt make the list because every game I've played has some irksome mechanic that annoys me, Dai Guard doesn't make the list because I've only watched like 3 episodes so far)
