Side Note : Twst Theory/Headcanon - The Causal Loop (Refined Time Loop Theory)
⚠️WARNING⚠️
⚠️CONTAINS SPOILER CHAPTER 6⚠️
This is a side note and a little bit of continuation to "Crowley the Mad Hatter" from "Twst Theory : Analysis Based on Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass" but this is more of a hc rather than a theory, even though you can still call this as a theory as well. It's basically time loop theory but now it uses science, mainly theoretical physics as its reference.
Before I continue to part 5 I decided to write something related to part 4 (Crowley's part in my twst analysis) here as a side note so I won't need to explain too much next time. Besides this part isn't actually based on Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass but still have some connection so it's best to write it separately.
If you read part 4 in my "Twst Theory : Analysis Based on Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass", you'll know why Crowley is twisted of Mad Hatter. In "Alice in Wonderland" , Hatter murder/upset time and later he (as Hatta) is being imprisoned in the sequel "Through the Looking Glass". The consequences after murdering/upsetting time is that Hatter stuck at tea time and can't move pass six.
Now I want you to imagine a scenario : What if in his original timeline, Crowley upsets time by turning back the time and then travelling to the past to prevent disaster (overblot Grim)?
Alice in Wonderland was published in 1865 and even though this looping in Mad Tea Party refers to Hamilton's attempt to find Quaternion, the four number system in mathematics represents 4th dimension before he added "time" in it, this looping in Mad Tea Party (Mad Hatter scene) can also picture the consequences of time travel the best. Those consequences are what's called "Time Paradox", a paradox which if you violate it, the time travel or turning back the time wouldn't be possible.
Example of time paradox : Imagine you want to prevent war. You know it's caused by one single person and so you do time travel back to the time before that war happens and kill that person. That person dies, thus the war never happens, and you don't have the reason to travel back in time because your purpose was to kill that person to prevent war, because the war itself never exist.
If you go back in time, everything will be reversed. If you travel to the past, that pasts will becomes your future, and your former presents becomes the pasts, which cannot be changed by your new future.
In one of the tweets, Yana said :
“It's completely coincidental, but this is a spring of eggs bursting open in various places, with an egg exploding in Twisted TheCOMIC in GF Magazine, in an illustration for TheNOVEL and being broken in Master Chef…🥚🥚🥚. Eggs are a good symbol of things that can never go back to how they were, once they have been broken.”
Why would Yana said something like this in her tweet? We will never know, but remember the words colored in blue will be the key to this theory.
There are many types of time paradox and all of them are essentialy the same but I'll only explain predestination paradox which is called "The Causal Loop" since most version of time paradox stem from this causal loop and it is easier to understand.
In the mid-1980s, Igor Novikov, a Russian theoretical astrophysicsist and cosmologist said time paradox could be avoided if the time travel fulfill a principle called "self-consistency principle". This principle by many scientists is pictured as this billiard ball.
A billiard ball enters time machine, the billiard ball appears in the past and then collides itself before it enters time machine. If that collision makes it can't enter time machine, that would be paradox.
But if that billiard ball collides itself in a trajectory where it enters time machine, the events would be consistent, and there will be no time paradox. This theoretically permitted in certain solutions of Einstein's general relativity that contain what are known as closed timelike curves, but the consequence is this events will end up in a loop.
A causal loop is a theoretical proposition. Wherein by means of time travel, an event is the cause of another event. In a book titled "Time Travel and Warp Drives : A Scientific Guide to Shortcuts through Time and Space" by Allan Everett (2011), Everett gives the movie "Somewhere in Time" as an example involving an object with no origin: an old woman gives a watch to a playwright who later travels back in time and meets the same woman when she was young, and gives her the same watch that she will later give to him. However, causal loop creates another paradox, and that paradox is : we don't know who gives that watch first. The old woman? Or the playwright? It is as if that event has no origin.
Backwards time travel would allow for causal loops involving events, information, people or objects whose histories form a closed loop, and thus seem to "come from nowhere." The notion of objects or information that are "self-existing" in this way is often viewed as paradoxical.
Based on the analysis I did previously in which Crowley is the Mad Hatter who upsets/murder/turn back the time, there are two informations of him which is essential to determine his existence in Twisted Wonderland but are unknown. Those informations are his age and homeland, as if he is just someone who comes from nowhere and live in Twisted Wonderland, just like Yuu and Grim.
A 1992 paper by physicists Andrei Lossev and Igor Novikov labeled such items without origin as Jinn, with the singular term Jinnee. This terminology was inspired by the Jinn of the Quran, which are described as "leaving no trace when they disappear". Lossev and Novikov allowed the term "Jinn" to cover both objects and information with reflexive origin; they called the former "Jinn of the first kind", and the latter "Jinn of the second kind". They point out that an object making circular passage through time must be identical whenever it is brought back to the past, otherwise it would create an inconsistency.
Jinn of the Quran is almost similar like ghost. Normally you can't see it with your eyes, unless if you're gifted. And they're not in our world (the same dimension) either.
We know in the prologue Crowley transformed as a ghost in twistunes tutorial using transmutation potion, but if I remember correctly, Jack said transmutation potion is illegal, unless if it's in special case like the merman of Octavinelle (Azul, Floyd, Jade) and because of this fact, people start to speculate if Crowley did something sus again. But based on this theory, what if he is also a special case like trio Octavinelle? His "human" form is the effect of a transmutation potion, while his true form is his ghost form.
Besides, we all know the ghosts in Ramshackle dorm is based on Disney Mickey - Lonesome Ghost, but there are only 3 ghosts in Ramshackle dorm while Lonesome Ghost has 4 ghosts. So the question is : where or who is (supposed to be) the 4th ghost?
The term predestination paradox is used in the Star Trek franchise to mean "a time loop in which a time traveler who has gone into the past causes an event that ultimately causes the original future version of the person to go back into the past." a time traveler goes back in time to try to prevent some event in the past, but ends up helping to cause that same event.
Based on "causal loop" and "self-consistency principle", something that happened will always happen no matter how much and how many times Crowley goes to the past to prevent something from happening. We can say the moment when Crowley turns back the time, that's also the moment where he "dies". Crowley as a "ghost" can mean both literally or figuratively. If literally, that means he really is a ghost who has no origin or isn't from Twisted Wonderland/from another dimension (Jinn ) and he only appears at the moment when he turns back the time, going back to the past and move forward in time to the moment where he turns back the time again. This is what is called "Closed Causal Loop".
But if he does have origin before he turns back the time (say like, if he is originaly from Briar Valley), he will becomes the ghost figuratively. This is because at the moment he turns back the time he will become the loop itself. This is what is called "Open Causal Loop".
He is still alive, but his existence is no longer valid in Twisted Wonderland because he is no longer a "person", but rather, an "entity" that cause the time to loop. Just like a cardiac transplant, imagine that time is the heart of Twisted Wonderland and this heart is stop beating because of disaster (Grim). Crowley operates Twisted Wonderland by turning back the time with his magic. In exchange, he becomes the heart of Twisted Wonderland replacing the original heart (time) belongs to Twisted Wonderland. Now Twisted Wonderland isn't dying but rather, move in a loop. But because of Crowley has become the heart of Twisted Wonderland, once he dies or cannot use magic anymore, Twisted Wonderland will also dies since there's nobody who can turn back the time and make the time move in a loop anymore. If he do something else, it'll change the course of time and create time paradox, thus reversing/looping time will no longer be possible. And this is why Crowley needs Yuu's help to save Twisted Wonderland. Crowley summons someone who is not bound to the time and law of nature of Twisted Wonderland, who is from another dimension, Yuu. Since Yuu aren't from Twisted Wonderland, they aren't bound to the timeline and fate of Twisted Wonderland and thus they're able to create another reality where Twisted Wonderland is saved.
So it's not that Crowley has been so negligent. It's because he is stuck in time paradox and can't do anything anymore to save Twisted Wonderland. And this is also why he doesn't want to let Yuu wandering outside school by themselves and offers a place to live in Ramshackle dorm. Because he needs Yuu's help.
There are some informations in game which I found interesting :
The traces of powerful spell on Grim in chapter 6 will take 100 years for S.T.Y.X. super computer to finish analyze it. (Explained by Idia in Chapter 6)
NRC is built 99 years ago before Yuu and Grim becomes NRC student (based on how many times NRC lose to RSA which is 99 times since its establishment and never win even once). Watchman of Island of Woe (Idia's family) become S.T.Y.X. about 100 years ago from the time when Grim and Yuu become NRC student. (explained by Lilia in Chapter 6)
The magic on Grim is ancient, about 1000 years old.
Lastly, we know Grim wants to become the greatest mage so much. The ribbon on Grim is what he wears from a very long time ago(it looks quite identical to NRC uniform tie). He doesn't remember his family. It was cold, and he waited for someone to come get him for ages.
I don't know how or what happened in the timeline because of course I don't know Twisted Wonderland main story from beginning to end (only Yana knows) so this is only a hc so what if chronologically it's like this :
-Long time ago, Crowley cast blot cleansing spell on Grim and other ancient spell. Reversing time while also travelling back in time. He arrived at the time before he build NRC. (1st loop)
-Crowley entrusted to build NRC by a chairman
-Crowley build NRC in one year and then choosing student with dark mirror
-99 years later Grim got summoned inside a cofin by Dark Mirror
-Grim creates trouble with Ace and Deuce, goes to Dwarfs Mine and eat his first blot stone
-Grim proves his worth and becomes prefect who reports and cleans up the mess of blot (this is where he got his ribbon) while Crowley is the one defeating the overbloting student while looking out for him (beast tamer) However Grim eats the blot stone without Crowley knowing it.
-Grim overblotted, Crowley turns back the time and cast cleansing spell on Grim which the process of the spell would be completed 100 years later
-Crowley travelling backwards in time with Grim (Grim also travelling back in time as side effect and this effect was actually happened in the 1st loop because time in Twisted Wonderland is reversed. Crowley didn't know it then but he knows it now) but Crowley and Grim end up in a different place and different time frame. (2nd loop)
-Crowley arrived at the time before NRC was built
-Crowley entrusted to build NRC by a chairman
-Crowley build NRC, choosing student with dark mirror, but this time he summons Yuu before finishing the timeline
-99 years later Grim snuck inside Yuu's cofin and arrived in NRC
-All goes according to the twst main story in game, including becomes the prefect (replacing Grim's role) and the one who will save Twisted Wonderland (replacing Crowley's role) with the exception of waking up and seeing the mirror in their room.
-Grim overblotting and knocks out Yuu. Crowley turns back the time and casting blot cleansing spell on Grim and send him to travel backwards in time. Crowley sending Yuu to travel backward in time as well while holding Yuu's hand through the mirror (3rd time loop) This is where the checkpoint was created (the scene we see at the very beginning of the game)
-Crowley ends up in time before he build NRC
-Grim and Yuu end up in the same time frame, with Yuu inside the carriage in the cofin.
-The Twisted Wonderland main story as we know it in game where Yuu meet Mickey
Mickey said he had this same dream three times so if Mickey's dream is a representation of how much Twisted Wonderland has been looping in time, this seems reasonable.
Let's say that Jinn (something without origin), Crowley, only appears at the very moment the time of Twisted Wonderland is about to end because of Grim (apocalypse). This is why I start the chronology from the time loop itself (1st loop)
You will also see that even though in the 2nd timeline (before the 3rd loop) Crowley did something different, it didn't change what should be happen in order for the time travel and time loop to work, because Yuu, who's previously not part of Twisted Wonderland which means not part of the timeline take place of Grim's role to become prefect and Crowley's role as the one who save Twisted Wonderland, which fills "self-consistency principle".
The term "time loop" is sometimes also referred to as a causal loop, but although they appear similar, causal loops are unchanging and self-originating, whereas time loops are constantly resetting. Here, after Crowley upsets time, he becomes the "causal loop" so that time itself can reset and create time loop.
Some people might be wondering : if the reason for Yuu to be summoned to Twisted Wonderland is to stop overblot and eventually to stop disaster (Grim), what if Yuu fail?
The answer is, they'll go back to the beginning again. That's when they meet overblot Grim and is defeated. (The overblot Grim we see at the very first time we play the game).
End Note : Lilia said S.T.Y.X. was founded as non profit organization 100 years ago at the time when Grim and Yuu becomes NRC students and we know Shroud family are around since ancient times at the Age of Gods so I'm sure S.T.Y.X. might have some connections but at this time the theory is written we don't know anything about it yet. I'm looking forward to see Idia's role in Diasomnia chapter or even additional Ramshackle chapter if it exist.
