âcan you really not keep any secrets from lesser lord kusanali?â
wanderer isnât even surprised by the voice below him, not anymore. he opens one eye and glances to the ground, knowing exactly the sight heâll see. and heâs right: a certain annoying desert-dweller, holding one hand up in a wave.
he closes it again. âshe could find out whatever she wants, but she has the decency to give me some privacy.â unlike some people, he internally adds on.
sethos laughs. âso, i could just go to her with all the questions you refuse to answer? will she tell me about your family?â
wanderer stiffens. âi donât have a family.â
he can sense the moment sethos realises he brought up something he shouldnât have. awkwardly, sethos speaks again. âh-hey, just kidding! i wonât do that!â
âwhy are you here?â asks wanderer, lifting his head and looking down at him. a chilly breeze blows through the branches of the tree heâs perched in. sumeru is a warm nation, so even the cold wind only makes the average person shiver a bit and nothing more. it doesnât affect wanderer, though, his resistance to temperatures higher than his peers. âor have you just come to pester me again?â
sethos grins once wandererâs gaze is entirely fixed upon him. âactually, i had a question! iâve known you for a while now, but i still dunno your birthday.â
wanderer scoffs. âpointless. does it matter?â
âyes! it does!â sethos huffs, hands on his hips. âcâmon, when is it?â
wanderer is silent.
sethos doesnât move.
wanderer sighs loudly. âyouâre so damn stubborn.â
sethos laughs at this. âso iâve been told.â
he has a difficult choice to make here. if he just keeps quiet, then eventually sethos will leave, though wanderer canât be sure how long that will take. and even if he does leave, he can always just go to buer to ask her, and sheâll undoubtedly tell him because sheâs always talking about how he needs to play nice and make friends.
damn it.
â...today.â
sethos sputters. âw-wait, really?! hey, come down here! actually, i havenât prepared anythingâŠer, iâll treat you to lunch!â he bounces on the balls of his feet, giving wanderer a pleading look.
wanderer rolls his eyes. sethos is like a little puppy. wanderer is not going to give in to that.
âŠhe gives in to it.
only because buer would scold him otherwise, alright? that would be even more annoying than sethosâs pestering.
âso, how old are you?â asks sethos, swinging his legs. they sit on a bench not far outside the cityâs port, watching the scenery while they eat. sethos had bought him some inazuman food, and it leaves a sort of bitter taste in his mouth.
he likes bitter things, at least.
wanderer stares at the fish in the water, two of them circling each other and jumping, like theyâre playing. âi donât know.â
âhuh?â sethos turns to him, head tilted, a bewildered expression on him. âwhat do you mean? how do you not know? doesnât lesser lord kusanali know, like, everything? she can tell you.â
wanderer kicks a pebble with the toe of his sandal. âi donât care how old i am. i never bothered counting. most peopleâd probably lose count by now, anyway.â
if the fall of khaenriâah was a little over five centuries ago, it would make him around the same age. heâs not sure how long after it that he was created, though, or exactly how many years itâs been. heâs five hundred something, at least. too old to celebrate pointless things like birthdays.
âaw, man!â sethos wails, tossing his head back in despair. âhow am i supposed to know how many candles to put on your cake?â
âi donât like cake,â wanderer reminds him, âand you wouldnât get halfway before youâd burn down the entire nation.â
sethos sighs, resting his arm on the back of the bench as he looks to wanderer. âugh, you really donât ever smile, do you? not even on your birthday.â
âiâd smile more if you were funnier,â wanderer retorts, lowering his head to hide a smirk under his hat.
âh-hey!â sethos protests, leaning towards him. âiâm funnier than cyno, at least, youâve gotta give me that!â
âthe mahamatra? at least someone laughs at his jokesâŠeven if itâs just him.â
âi bet i can make you laugh,â says sethos, and wanderer should have known from the glint in his eyes that this conversation is going somewhere very dangerous.
yet, he continues. he taunts. he canât help it, teasing sethos is actually kinda fun. butâ
âw-what the fuck?!â wanderer yelps, jolting away so forcefully he almost falls right off the bench. sethos stares wide-eyed for a moment before he bursts into laughter, doubling over and holding his stomach.
âi hoped youâd be ticklish, but i didnât think youâd have that strong of a reaction!â
âŠtickling. wanderer knows what it is, of course, but in his long life heâs never once experienced it for himself. a part of him is curious, wanting to learn more, but he shuts that little voice down immediately.
unfortunately, sethos doesnât seem to care about any of that. all he seems to concern himself with is that wanderer is ticklish, and tickling is a surefire way to make him laugh.
andâŠlaugh he does, as much as he tries to hold back. sethosâs hands latch onto wandererâs knees, squeezing playfully and it really, really tickles.
âs-stohohohop!â wanderer tries to growl, but between his squeaky laughter and steadily reddening cheeks, he doesnât think it comes across quite how he wants it to. âiâllâyohou! stop thihihis!â
he looks up to sethos, wanting to glare, but heâs met with a bit of an unexpected sight.
sethos looks absolutely entranced, eyes sparkling with glee. the wide grin upon his lips might just rival wandererâs own.
âis this why you never laugh?â sethos asks, almost teasingly. âno one will ever be intimidated by you if they knew how cute your laugh isâŠâ
the sentence, or maybe the tone he says it in, or probably both, sends a swarm of butterflies to wandererâs stomach, though itâs very quickly drowned out by a bunch of pokes and squeezes to the area.
âshuhut uhuhup! i swehear, iâllâŠ!â
itâs so unnatural for him to laugh so freely, and he wants to hate it. in a way, he kind of does. this entire thing is driving him insane and he doesnât know how much more of this he can take.
but when he manages to grab onto sethosâs wrists, he canât bring himself to push them off.
#happy birthday scara!!!! my favourite <3#tklfics#genshin#genshin impact#scaramouche#sethos#sethoscara#tickle fic

it's always harder to start a personal post than it feels like it'll be when i'm drafting it in my head while i wash the dishes. pushing through to ramble and navel-gaze anyway, thoughâ
i've been thinking as the new year gets its legs under it about the effort i put in last year toward the goal of not being single. i didn't call it that, obviously. the actual spelled out goal was to do one singles or speed dating event per month and one volunteering event per month, which to be clear i came nowhere close to (i went to three speed dating events and three volunteering events and did one month of weekly swing dance classes). but i did do more than last year. and out of those three speed dating events i ended up going on two dates (with the same person). overall it was, diplomatically, pretty disheartening.
i'm going to keep trying, though i haven't decided exactly what that's going to look like in 2025. going out and doing things is expensive, and putting yourself out there without much to show for it is draining. even trying to buy cute clothes as a fat person is draining. i like the idea of trying to cultivate a larger social circles of weak ties, but in practice i'm pretty reserved when i'm alone in a crowd of new people. i'm starting to get the sense that it's easier to meet someone when you're already dating someone, like getting a job is easier when you already have a job. is it worth trying the horrid apps again, because at least they're less expensive, even if they're more draining? is this just what it's like trying to not be single when you're fat? am i just emanating lack of confidence in my dating prospects from every pore?
i'm giving myself january off, to fortify myself emotionally and think about how i'm going to take aim at this this year and because i want to have a low spend month and this shit adds up quick. unfortunately, thinking about it means thinking about it. and thinking about it kind of sucks!
there's this big part of myself that i've never had the opportunity to know, and i've really felt it lately. i can only take a guess at what i'm like in a relationship, what i'm like when i share my life with someone to that degree. the older i get, the more keenly i feel having never known that, and the more i doubt that i can even find room in my life for it. where do i fall on the i don't want somebody in my house to there's someone in my house and they love me spectrum?
when i was home over christmas, mom said something about me having kids (not in a pushy way, it was fine) and i said that i don't want to undertake single parenting. she, not unfairly, pointed out that that's always a risk of it. and she's right, of course, there is always a risk of a partner dying or leaving or needing to be left. she didn't change my mind, or even particularly open the door to me changing my mind, but it did make me additionally sad for another part of myself i might never get to know.
i don't really know where i'm going with this. thinking about my gratitude to all the writers i've read over the years who've been so clear that there really are no guarantees. thinking that many people look for love for years and years and never find it. that others find it later in life. too late for some things, perhaps, but not never. that it's this huge, important thing that i can't really control much at all. i can make an effort (even though making an effort often feels worse than not) and ... that's basically it. i can work on my tendency to be reserved in a crowd and take myself out to places where people meet people and beyond that ... hope for the best? kinda sucks.
a dear friend texted me the other day asking for me to be there for some of her wedding day activities. she's older than me, and met her wife (who's my age) in fandom. it's both heartening and not, you know? most of my friends met their spouses in college (that ship has sailed) or in fandom (i'm open to it but it's probably a long shot). some fell for a friend. a lot of my friends are just as single as me (though many of them are more content to stay that way).
i want to wrap this around to some kind of conclusion, and i don't think there is one. i haven't even really learned anything from a year of this. feeling unwanted sucks (i knew that), meeting someone to fall in love with is a crapshoot (i knew that), going out and doing things is expensive (i knew that). i hope i can come back to this post someday and have a way to tie it all back together and mean something. it doesn't feel likely right now.

So I just went through 52 audiobooks in 2023 so let's see what recommendations I can provide. The first few are going to be historical dramas and kind of sad and filled with trauma because I started reading the books at the top of The Most Controversial Books lists BUT their narrators were phenomenal.
This is a very long list, I hope you find something you like from it. Good luck!
1. The audiobook for Bluest Eye is read by Toni Morisson (the author) and she delivers it beautifully. I'm convinced authors who are brave enough or picky enough to narrate their own books are built different and it shows.
2. Their Eyes Were Watching God by Zora Neale Hurston was a beautiful story of a woman and her journey of love in the 1800s(?) and Ruby Dee does a pheonomal job as the narrator.
3. The Color Purple by Alice Walker, another love story but with a queer twist, roughly in the same time period. She narrated it herself, and my god she does the widest range of accents for a while I was convinced that there was more than one narrator in this book. Or that was Ruby Dee? You'll have to excuse me my memory is very poor and the books were just similar enough that I get them mixed up.
So with my top three best suggestions out of the way I can offer more variety. If you have questions or looking for "similar to" books just let me know. These are listed in the order I read them, I'd recommend any of these but it depends on what the reader's style is to determine if it's a good recommendation.
4. Lolita by Vladimir Nobakov, read by Jeremy Irons (pedophilia is a very difficult subject to read about and it's representation in this is controversial already and Jeremy Irons is very good at narrating it's almost scary, so take caution definitely not for everyone)
5. The Chocolate War by Robert Cormier, read by Frank Muller (slice of catholic school life, coming of age, I found it fun and the narrator was very convincing when a character was talking on the phone while eating a sandwich and that tickled me)
6. The Once and Future Witches by Alix Harrow, read by Gabra Zack an (fantasy, story about three sisters I read cuz I thought it mirrored my family, it was a decent story but I'm not a fan of fantasy much but you might be)
7. Kite Runner by Khaled Hosseini, read by himself (it's about a kid and his father and the trauma of the history of Afghanistan and his childhood friend and it's very good, but very sad, so read it if you have the emotional space for it cuz it certainly drained me)
8. The Heaven and Earth Grocery Store by James McBride, read by Dominic Hoffman (it's technically a period drama but it feels less grounded in realism than the rest, that didn't stop it from being a damn good story)
9. The Iron Widow by Xiran Jay Zhao, read by Rong Fu (if you like fantasy and you liked Pacific Rim then this is the book for you, the sequel just came out and I plan on reading it also. I'm American and while I have issues remembering names in general, I did struggle more to keep all the characters separate because the characters are based on historical Chinese figures, most notably the only female Chinese Emperor but I mixed up the names constantly so I had to go back and read it twice which I didn't mind)
10. The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood, read by Betty Harris (I didn't particularly like this narrator but the story was good enough to read despite it. It's 1984 but better. I haven't seen the Amazon show yet but heard it was good. This book on its own is a bit of a heavy book, but it's made worse by the parallelisms to modern political climates intentionally and expertly done by the author because she based it on true news headlines form the 1970s(?) so it was good but genuinely shook me to the core)
11. The Ocean at the End of the Lane by Niel Gaiman, read by himself (it was whimsical and reminded me a bit of Wrinkle In Time in a way, would probably make a good movie, I didn't particularly enjoy it but I needed some not serious books on this list...)
12. Underground: The Tokyo Gas Attack and the Japanese Psyche by Haruki Murakami, read by Feodor Chin, Ian Anthony Dale and Janet Song (Welp back to the serious stuff...if you like documentaries I would recommend this book. It's an oral history which means it's less about the facts and more about the opinions and experiences of people, it's direct interviews with victims, it taught me a lot and was done well. My only regret is not knowing Japanese because the English version only translated half the interviews and I'd have happily listened to more.)
13. Babel by R. F. Kuang, read by Chris Lew Kum Hoi and Billie Fulford-Brown (period fantasy, language magic, I enjoyed it but wanted it to be more educational lol but that's just me, I do recommend it)
Uhhh I'm running out of energy to recall descriptions or comments for all these books so I'm just gonna go rapid fire on these and you'll have to figure them out yourself.
14. The Wife Between Us by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen
15. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society by Mary Ann Shaffer and Annie Barrows
16. The Book Theif by Markus Zusak
17. The Rose Code by Kate Quinn
18. Gideon the Ninth by Tamsyn Muir
19. The Women by Kristin Hannah
20. The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman
And finally, some books that do not have audiobooks (either because they were unavailable to me or the book is formatted in a way that reading it doesn't make sense, or would defeat the purpose of the formatting) but I would encourage anyone to read someday.
21. Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes
22. Piranesi by Susanna Clark
23. Breakfast at Tiffany's by Truman Capote (I read this with rose colored glasses because I love Audrey Hepburn so take this with a grain of salt)
any more audiobook recommendations ppplllleeaaassseeee đđđ„ș

I started getting YT recs for Sims 4, and this is the start of my downfall.
I checked on steam, and the base game is F2P. I download the game and itâs basically the only thing Iâve been doing for the last 3 days, despite the fans in my laptop being put on blast.
Like, games with skills to level and autoplay? I am absolutely watching my screen for hours on end, only to realize several hours just disappeared for my life. I remember playing (and still have yet to finish) Persona 5 Strikers, and I am still in the 3rd dungeon and I already went ahead to max all the available characters skills bc it bothered me that they werenât.
Seriously, I really should take advantage of cheats in the Sims so Iâm not starting at my computer screen (literally not even mulitasking a game on my phone or Youtube on the side) waiting for my Sim to get better at gardening for an entire day.
#desiree talks#my biggest mistake was accidentally getting my Sim pregnant#so instead of trying different jobs (I started with part time and was doing construction)#I have to max (even if I donât need to I will) my kids starts until they can do things themselves#sheâs a toddler and is two skills away from max#then i can age and probably keep her as a kid#like sheâs almost autonomous except she needs to sit at the high chair to eat#oh and bathe#and thatâs less time for them to work or level their skills#like my sim married Don(?) and working freelance is annoying since itâs a lot of small things to do#no i want to pick one option and speed through it#i need my sim or don to get a better job bc i need to expand the house#i wasnât expecting a kid so soon#so my simâs house is small af#i donât currently have space for a kids room#and i wanted to figure out how to make a second floor#or try a basement#(i am not a builder btw just a stat raiser)#my lot doesnât have a lot of outdoor space#and i really want to try to figure out building

shathann fucked up in so many ways with raising taash but she also makes me. so so SO sad. welcome back deeply flawed dragon age mother figures in various shades of 'well. I mean you tried. I guess' (from 'not at all' to 'I can see what you thought you were going for at least' as appropriate) we tango once more
#american masc rook's delivery of 'then why did you leave?' is so fucking good. felt that right down to my toes.#I personally find shathann much more sympathetic than leandra hawke because I do think she really is doing the very best she knew how#with the extremely limited resources and background she'd been given. learning a bit too late that raising a kid isn't an academic debate#where like. I think leandra frequently fails to do parenting stuff just as much because it's easier/more comfortable for her to not do it#and I find sheer emotional laziness being allowed to do that kind of harm just. infuriating!!!!!! maddening!!!#but I think this is uh. one of those that's probably going to depend on your own personal history and experiences big time haha.#no wrong way to feel about it just personal tender spots#caterina just fucking sucks tho she keeps burning these kids up basically for financial reasons lmao#(it's more complicated than that and I think she probably also *did* genuinely fear for their survival if she let them be 'soft'#I mean. how couldn't she be afraid after all that shit. but that does not make it better or less fucked up what she did. and keeps doing)#dragon age#dragon age: the veilguard#dragon age: the veilguard spoilers#dragon age spoilers#shathann#every time taash calls shathann 'tama' I curl up in physical pain for a while before I can be functional again

why does everything have to be a hecking issue with my sister
#she keeps getting on my case about the Theatre Boy thing which I would just like to hecking leave in the past#she keeps getting on my case bc I wear short shorts and spaghetti strap tank tops AROUND THE HOUSE AS LOUNGE CLOTHES#she's like DO YOU EVEN CARE ABOUT MODESTY and I'm like YOU WALK AROUND IN SHORTS AND A SPORTS BRA ALL THE TIME#(possibly bc I thought I could get away with wearing lounge clothes with a long shawl thing overtop the other day to worship practice#but I did in fact change my trousers after my mama pointed out that it wasn't super modest)#she keeps making comments about how I do inappropriate stuff on my phone bc I... watch one(1) sitcom?????#shows like that are IRREVERENT AS HECK like come on of course I'm not going to be totally open with my kid sister about them#I am an ADULT I can make my own choices about what content I will put up with in media#I can make my own choices about clothing if I think my mom's idea of ''anything more than an inch above the knee#is immodest'' is silly and restrictive for my body shape and comfort level personally#like... why does she have to act so high and mighty around me? she's in MIDDLE SCHOOL and I know I haven't always been the nicest to her#but I'm making the effort. I'm trying to get along with her and what I get is disdain on the daily in return :/#our mom said it's probably bc she was hoping I wouldn't move back in so she'd have our room to herself and now she's mad#that I'm back bc she has to share a space again and like I KNOW middle school ages SUCK I've BEEN THERE#but still I just. want to get along. but she picks on me and then I get frustrated and then I snap at her and it just doesn't end well#it's a nasty cycle tbh. I'm praying about it.#Lu rambles#personal#delete later

I think the thing that gets me about the LQG-LMY age gap is the implication that SVSSS martial sects serve to sever your ties from your family. This is admittedly skewed by our protagonist being SQQ, but at no point do we hear about any of the Qing Jing disciples getting visits from family members. SQH's family doesn't even get a mention. And so LQG is making a conscious decision to go back to meet this baby (a girl, even, in what isn't ancient China levels of misogyny but is still PIDW) and spend enough time with her that she chooses to follow him up this mountain away from everything she knows. I don't think it was For him but it was something that registered as desirable to her because he was there and able to tell her about it, you know? No wonder PIDW LMY is so ready to avenge him, when he clearly was the one to choose her first
actually, we do hear about the Qing Jing disciples getting visits from family members! Ming Fan mentions his family visiting during the fake jade fight, which is why he had his own little jade trinket to show off to Ning Yingying -- because his family brought it. I think he's the only one to mention getting visits from family though, so maybe that's just a Ming Fan thing lol
even still, it definitely seems like a big deal that Liu Qingge would have any relationship at all with his baby sister! I mean, he was head disciple if not peak lord when she was born, he was probably busy. he could've very easily responded to the news that his parents were having another kid by just being like cool đ and then moving on, but he apparently didn't since they have some semblance of a relationship! I mean, they're described as not super close but still having a good relationship, and she still ended up in the same cultivation sect at him, and still apparently teamed up with Bingge to avenge him in PIDW, so they definitely care for each other despite the age difference!
#asks#anonymous#i think if they were more central to the plot i would be absolutely crazy about them#give my tendency to be absolutely crazy about sibling characters#as it stands we don't know Much about them#but what is there is good!#i wonder if she grew up with stories of her brother being the bai zhan war god#and that's what inspired her to join cang qiong#i think them not being super close makes sense given the age difference and the fact that lqg is. kinda brusque lol#but they still have a good relationship regardless!#i wonder if he taught her how to hold a sword#also re: your first point#i think the cultivation sects definitely offer the Option to sever family ties!#it probably depends on the person#it's like. you have the option to sever ties bc now you have this sect to fall back on for support#that you are also supposed to be filial towards#but you probably don't Have to sever ties if you don't want to#or maybe ming fan is just an outlier lol#it could just be that he was still a kid at that point or that he's spoiled or something#i think i've seen it said that he came from a somewhat privileged family but i can't remember if that's fanon or not#it would make sense#okay i looked it up and he is described as a spoiled rich young master lol#and apparently his family makes tea. i forgot about that.#so maybe the members of the sect with more wealthy families tend to keep those ties#while orphans like lbh and sqq or people who apparently don't give a damn about their families like sqh#get the chance to get a support system through the sect#or at least. ideally they should get a support system. we saw how well that went for binghe at first#anyway. the liu family is implied to be pretty well off so maybe their family ties are closer?#this is all speculation#*banging on mxtx's door* hey can you give me more details about side characters from a novel you wrote a decade ago. please. im so hungry

Oh. So its a thing. With all the Robins. Is it tested out in the safety of the cave first in case the the cape/hood combo doesn't hold the kid's weight? Like the reinforced stitched gives out? Is there training for this?
A warning given from previous mantle holders that's dismissed out of hand until it happens to them in the field?
Is that Batman's version of a child leash/handle?
#all i can imagine is the handles on the back of my doggo's jacket that are supposedly to help keep the chest ties in place#because of her age we're also using them as a handle to hold up her hind legs and hips when she gets tired of standing but needs to continue#standing at the vet's or emergency care or as a redirecting handle when she's walking into the chair she hasn't seen. again.#because Bruce would probably need a Oh Shit Grab My Kid handle. and what better than a cape? because Edna said no capes for a reason

Itâs almost 6 a.m and I canât sleep because Iâm being plagued by thoughts of The Latest OC
#Kat and Nia and their multiverse of madness#Jia is genuinely making me lose my mind#right now the aftermath interests me a bit more because I live for emotional whump and angst#just.. imagine being her parents#you beg for your daughterâs life and your plea is listened to. sheâs released. having proved herself useless. you barely recognise her#sheâs nothing like the upbeat and cheerful girl you raised who loved working in this palace. who loved her lady#sheâs so thin. hollow cheeks and empty eyes. she barely reacts to anything but Lord Jusamahâs voice which makes her flinch#youâre afraid to even hug her in case she disappears like a ghost would. something is very very wrong with her#you remember the rumours that she was tortured for the information. she looks like sheâs starving#itâs clear she was hurt. she wouldnât act like this if she wasnât. âyouâre scared to think of what is hidden beneath her clothes#you want to lunge at Lord Jusamah and strangle him with your bare hands. inflict everything heâs done to your daughter on him tenfold#but you canât. heâs rich and you arenât. he has power and you donât. if you try.. none of you are seeing the sun ever again#you barely care. it would be worth it. but you have two other children to worry about. and Jia deserves her freedom#so all you can do is drop to your knees. press your forehead to the floor. and thank him for his kindness#you tell Jia that youâre taking her home. alertness returns to her for but a moment#âhome?â her whisper sounds so sad. so broken. you can barely stand it#you rush home as fast as you can. sheâs so skittish it hurts. she feels the sun on her face and doesnât move for a good 10 minutes#you canât bring yourself to say anything. one of you goes ahead to warn the family so the children wonât crowd her#you finally make it to your house and Jia looks at it as if it was a mirage. she touches the wall to ensure itâs real#the first thing you do is help her take a bath. the sight of her back fuels you with bloodlust. thereâs no untouched spot on it#your sweet gentle girl was whipped until criss crossing scars covered every last inch. it must have been hell#you bandage her wounds and take her to eat. she gorges herself on it as if someone would take it away. some light returns to her eyes#she always had a good appetite. at least that didnât change. after lunch you let her sleep in your own bed#instead of making her share with her siblings and cousins. she needs space. she passes out the second her head hits the pillow#you stay and keep watch. and when the first night terror occurs. youâre ready. her screams are impossibly loud#you wake her. calm her down and hold her hand as she falls back asleep. recovery wonât be an easy road#but you walk it anyway. and with time. she gets better. she returns to her old self. only some traces of that horror remain#sheâs happy again. smiles a lot. helps out. plays with the younger kids. sheâs the Jia you know and love#she has nightmares. her scars hurt. no one touches her back. sheâs paranoid about food. but sheâll be okay. youâre sure of it#(I reached the tag limit again but at least I said all I had in mind. but I could probably ramble on about this for agesâŠ)

Love the slight AUs where Bruce as Batman has been a member of the league for ages, but he's somehow managed to keep his assortment of children under the radar.
Because it sets up the wildest misunderstandings within the league. He routinely talks about his babies, his children who are all so sweet and kind and occasionally assholes yes but only because they are young (and traumatized) hell I don't think the league would even be aware that they're adopted. So they're all thinking literal children
Barry: Bats really loves his kids.
Hal: I mean they're babies, wait till they hit the angsty teens and I'm sure we'll be hearing the opposite
Which means the day they finally meet Nightwing they don't know wtf to think. For one thing, how old would he have been when he had this kid???? Should they be worried about that???? And for the other, that is not a baby, that is not a precious little thing.
He could break someone in half. Like a twig.
He won't, but he could. And they can see that. (He's bat trained, they have seen what the bat can do they are not fools)
And they're like, okay. Okay maybe he isn't the baby (he is). He's got younger kids right? He's never said how many, they have 0 clues. They've been expecting 1 child, maybe 2 because he'd said kid in the plural exactly once when comforting an older woman while they were searching for her children in the aftermath of a rough battle.
And then a week later they run into Red Hood. In his leather, with his guns. And he drapes himself across Batmans back with all the self confidence in the world and starts whining about the "Brat" breaking into his safe house.
To steal his dog.
And yet again. He is not baby. He is bigger than Batman. He could probably break Batman in half given the bat didn't put up a fight. But Batman looks at him with probably the softest expression they've ever seen on that mans face and tells him very earnestly that the kid just wants to spend time with his older brother, next time they should try a walk. Maybe go to the zoo.
But probably not one of the babies. They're kind, and gentle, and at least one just loves reading and Bats has been trying to encourage that!!!
And then a day later he mentions his "babies" going for a walk in the park and they all instantaneously lose their minds at the confirmation.

MAMA, A DIVA BEHIND YOU! â toji fushiguro sfw!
prologue. â toji loves his son, he really does. unfortunately, young megumi is less than receptive when it comes to toji's efforts to impress the pretty neighbour who just moved into the apartment down the hall.
or five times megumi actively made toji's love life worse. and the one time he actually helped.
pairing. toji fushiguro x afab!reader
warnings. megumi is his own warning. mild age gap implied. non sorcerer au, toji is raising megumi on his own. reader has she/her pronouns. nothing else, just shenanigans :) toji gets knocked down a few pegs by his son đ mildly ooc toji <3
word count. song inspiration. paper rings â taylor swift
a/n. this is sooo silly and for fun lol đ i feel like you can tell this just isn't my genre or writing style đ
mp3. i like shiny things, but i'd marry you with paper rings <3
TOJI FUSHIGURO didn't have a lot of treasures in life. he just wasn't that type of guy. treasures were for people with their lives together â the kind who budgeted for organic vegetables and owned matching socks. toji's list of prized possessions was short: a semi-reliable pay check, a fridge that kept his beer cold on a good day, and the one channel that aired late-night baseball games.
oh, and his kid. megumi fushiguro.
the little brat was the one thing in toji's life he could call a blessing without choking on the word. but lately? toji was seriously considering the logistics of international shipping. could you send a five year old punk to siberia? where was the paperwork for that?
everything had been fine. hell, downright manageable. until you moved in down the hall.
at first, toji didn't give a fuck. neighbours were usually either noisy or nosy, and sometimes the tragic combination of both. the last guy had banged on his door at least once a week, yelling about toji's late-night weightlifting sessions and muttering something about 'quiet hours.'
toji had pegged you for the same. maybe with a yoga met and too many scented candles.
but then, you showed up on his doorstep with a kind smile that could probably light up half the districts in the city. and a polite, sweet, "excuse me, but could you help me with my bed frame?"
and that was it.
the universe must've been real bored, because that was the moment it decided that toji fushiguro â self proclaimed expert on not giving a damn, was going to lose his damn mind like cupid has struck him with the painful arrows of a crush. and he was a goner.
take #1 â my neck, my back
spring in tokyo had come into full bloom, the kind of day where the air smelled faintly of sunshine, and the cherry blossoms drifted around like lazy, little freeloaders. below the apartment complex, the park wasn't much to write home about â a scrappy patch of grass, a couple of benches that looked like they'd seen some shit, and a swing set that squeaked like it had a vendetta against joy.
but for toji? it was good enough.
he'd figured this 'let me show you around because i'm so friendly' outing would be low effort. easy. casual and neighbourly, even. except now, he was leaning against a tree which was far harder than it sounded when his lower back was screaming at him louder than megumi had this morning about brushing his teeth.
but you stood nearby, smiling that damn warm and disarming smile of yours, gently plucking a stray blossom from megumi's messy hair. the kid, for his part, was pointedly ignoring you both, kicking rocks with the type of dedication usually reserved for a brat trying to avoid his homework.
toji cleared his throat, "so, uh, the area's not bad. quiet most of the time. that convenience store over there's open late. great for snacks. or milk. y'know, the owner's a bit of a bitc â"
"why are you standing like that?"
megumi's voice cut through his rehearsed tour like a rusty knife.
toji shot him a sharp glance. a look that screamed: keep your mouth shut, kid.
megumi just tilted his head, all faux innocence, and then delivered the killing blow with those sea-green eyes gleaming in what toji was certain was pure maliciousness, "dad, your back hurts again, doesnât it?"
toji froze, scrambling for damage control, but you were already pressing your lips together, trying not to laugh. trying. but he could see the corners of your mouth twitching.
"back's fine," toji huffed, straightening up too fast. something in his spine must have popped loud enough to startle a crow off a branch, "solid a rock, hah! good as new."
megumi glanced at his scuffed sneakers, and then back up, "you said it was hard getting off the couch this morning. didn't you say you're old now and falling apart?"
toji's entire soul left his body. the punk was a traitor to a family name. he should have just sent megumi back to the clan long ago.
"don't you have a rock to kick?" he hissed.
"already did all that."
and that was it. your laugh finally burst out, bright and loud, ringing through the little patch of a park. toji found himself staring at you like some idiot in a rom-com whoâd just realised he was completely doomed.
"kids, huh?" he muttered, throwing megumi a glare that promised revenge.
"kids," you agreed, eyes still sparkling as you excused yourself, something about leaving a pot on the stove. you gave toji one last look as you turned to go, warm and soft with that lingering amusement.
toji leaned back against the tree once you were gone, letting out a long sigh. megumi was still standing there, kicking the same patch of dirt, as though he were trying to discover unseen archaeological wonders underneath the earth.
"you're lucky i donât sell you to a circus," toji grumbled under his breath.
megumi didnât even look up, "you wouldnât get that much for me."
smart-ass kid.
take #2 â the liar's pants are blazing on fire
walking someone home shouldn't have felt like scaling mount fuji, but toji fushiguro was now sweating bullet. the evening was crisp, the air cool enough to keep him from outright drowning in these stupid nerves, but it helped little.
the streetlights flickered on one by one, casting a faint yellow glow over the neighbourhood. nothing fancy â just rows of small apartments with laundry dangling off balconies and the occasional stray cat darting under parked car. it wasn't exactly romantic, but in the soft glow of the spring, it didn't look that bad.
you walked besides him, laughing at some half-assed joke he'd cracked earlier. and damn, toji liked that sound. more than he should've. more than he'd admit to anyone, including himself. now though, the silence had crept back in, and he was left psyching himself up for the move.
just hold her hand, his brain hissed, it's not rocket science. come on, man. no! wait, give her a compliment, call her hot. ugh, idiot. don't say that yet -
his thick fingers flexed awkwardly at this side as he tried to look natural. a valiant losing battle when every nerve in his body screamed, you have one job, fushiguro. don't ruin this.
"dad!"
toji's head snapped up like a startled animal, and there he was. megumi. his kid. his little shadow. gasping, clutching his throat, and staggering toward them like a samurai dying in glorious battle.
"dad! i â i can't breathe!" megumi wheezed, voice raspy as he doubled over in dramatic agony.
toji blinked. what the â
"i think i'm dying!" megumi croaked, collapsing onto the sidewalk with all the subtlety of a boulder tumbling down a hill.
toji sighed, already pinching the bridge of his nose. shouldâve known. thid kid had been hanging around that white-haired freak downstairs too much. what had that gojo satoru been teaching him? shakespearean death monologues?
"what is it this time?" toji asked flatly, his voice like gravel.
"maybe, maybe it's the peanuts!" megumi sputtered, clutching his chest now, because why not? "the ones i ate at home! i think i'm allergic!"
toji stared at him, unimpressed. this was the same kid who could inhale salted peanuts by the handful, barely pausing for air, like he was training for some bizarre snack-eating championship.
"you're not allergic," toji deadpanned.
"i think i am!" megumi wheezed, dropping to his knees, his little hands shaking dramatically.
"oh my god!" you gasped, wide-eyed. "should we â i mean, do we need to take him to the hospital? i can drive â"
toji waved a rough hand, trying to salvage what little dignity he had left, "nah, kidâs fine. just go on home. i'll handle this."
"but â"
"it's fine," toji insisted, forcing what he hoped was a reassuring smile, even as megumi collapsed onto the pavement like heâd been struck by lightning.
you had hesitated, clearly torn, but eventually nodded, "okay⊠but call me if you need anything, okay?"
toji nodded, biting back the heat threatening to crawl up his neck. "yeah, yeah. go on."
the second you turned the corner, toji crouched next to his "dying" son, who immediately cracked one eye open and coughed weakly for good measure.
"what the hell was that?" toji grunted, "what did i say about huffing gasoline in the laundry?"
"don't do it."
toji flicked the punk's forehead, "mhm, so?"
megumi shrugged, sitting up and dusting off his pants. "thought i was allergic."
"to peanuts? that shit you eat everyday?"
"better safe than sorry, dad."
toji huffed, ruffling a hand through his choppy black hair. he glanced in the direction youâd gone, muttering under his breath, "you're lucky youâre cute, kid."
the next morning, toji opened his door to find a basket sitting on the mat. a pristine, gingham-lined basket packed with golden, buttery pastries and muffins that smelled like heaven. attached was a note:
for megumi! i hope heâs feeling better!
karmic justice demanded that toji sit down, scarf it entirely, and leave nothing but crumbs for the little brat. he'd earned that much.
take #3 â they didn't get my nose right!
toji fushiguro didnât get flustered easily. fights? He could eat a punch for breakfast. bills? well, avoidance was a valid financial strategy. but you, sitting on his couch, smiling at him like youâd never met a red flag you didnât want to rehabilitate, while unpacking groceries for him and megumi? that was uncharted territory.
terrifying.
the apartment was...presentable. which was more than he could say ten minutes before you arrived, when he'd barked at megumi like a drill sergeant to hide every suspicious stain and questionable stack of dishes. now, the faint sting of cleaning spray lingered in the air, and the tiny place almost looked cozy. not that toji would admit it.
"you didnât have to bring anything," he muttered, rubbing the back of his neck.
"oh, it's no trouble!" you chirped, beaming like some kind of saint. "i thought you and megumi might like some fresh vegetables. and i couldnât resist grabbing some sweets for him."
from the corner of the room, megumi's ears perked up at sweets. he dropped the crayon heâd been chewing (toji pretended not to see it) and padded over, all innocent wide eyes and suspiciously good behaviour.
"dad," megumi started, his tone way too angelic for a kid who regularly schemed like a demonic manga villain, âcan i show her my drawing?"
toji utterly froze.
megumi never asked to show off his drawings. usually, he just thrust them into unsuspecting hands like a nosy salesman who couldn't take no for an answer. this? this was premeditated.
"uh," toji grunted, squinting at the kid. "maybe later. sheâs busy."
but you, bless your overly trusting heart, smiled and said, "oh, i'd love to see it! i'm sure it's adorable."
toji didnât even have time to stop him. megumi whipped out a crumpled paper from his pocket like he was smuggling state secrets and handed it to you with an air of triumph.
you unfolded it carefully, and toji wanted to crawl into the walls.
there it was: a chaotic, technicolor mess of lines and smudges.
and centre stage?
a terrifyingly accurate caricature of him labeled "dad," locked in what could only be described as a life-or-death struggle with a rabid raccoon twice his size. above his head, a speech bubble screamed, "no!" while the raccoon yelled back, "mine!"
toji groaned so loud it couldâve registered on the richter scale, "kid. seriously?"
your laughter was instant and loud, the kind that made you clutch your sides and tear up. "this â oh my god, this is amazing!" you wheezed, doubling over.
"itâs not even accurate," toji muttered, crossing his arms, his biceps straining against his shirt like they were trying to leave this embarrassing moment behind. "i won."
"dad didnât win," megumi piped up, as smug as a kid whoâd just blown up his old manâs spot in front of a pretty lady, "the raccoon stole the chips."
"megumi," toji growled, pinning him with a glare that wouldâve made lesser beings tremble. the kid just shrugged, popping another crayon into his mouth like this was all part of his five-year master plan.
later, after youâd left, still giggling and promising to "treasure" the drawing, toji leaned over the kitchen table where megumi was innocently snacking on his candy.
'kid," toji said, his voice low and dangerous, "if you ever pull something like that again, iâll eat your crayons. one by one. and i'll make you watch."
megumi didnât even flinch, cool as a cucumber, "good luck. i hid all the good ones."
take #4 â take your broke ass home!
the neighborhood festival was the kind of event that came together with duct tape and misplaced enthusiasm. a few janky game booths, a cotton candy machine that looked like it ran on prayers, and a ferris wheel that creaked like it was auditioning for a horror movie. but toji didnât mind. he had a plan.
this was going to be his moment.
he invited you under the pretense of "fun time" for megumi, but really, it was to show you what a catch he was. buff, capable, ruggedly charming â he was ready to prove it all. what better way than with a little festival bravado? heâd win you a giant stuffed panda or one of those oversized bears that could double as a couch. easy.
you and megumi stood by a booth plastered with painted bullseyes, rows of rubber balls stacked neatly on the counter. toji rolled up his sleeves, flexing his arms just enough to catch your attention. he reached into his pocket, pulling out a wad of crumpled cash like he was buying the entire festival, "watch this."
from beside him, megumi crossed his arms. his eyes squinted with the kind of judgment only an six-year-old could muster. then, like a sniper, he fired off the line that would ruin toji's day.
"careful, dad," megumi said, voice loud enough to turn a few heads. "thatâs our grocery money for the week."
toji froze mid-reach for the first ball and his jaw clenched. slowly, painfully, he turned to face megumi, who was standing there with a look of angelic smugness.
"megumi," toji growled through gritted teeth, "let's remember who brought you here."
megumi didnïżœïżœt miss a beat, "oh, right. i'm just worried that dinner tomorrow is soy sauce soup."
"kidâs got jokes," toji muttered, rubbing the back of his neck, his cocky energy now entirely replaced by something closer to "please make this stop."
"oh, i donât think heâs joking," you teased, tears forming at the corners of your eyes from laughing too hard.
"yeah, definitely not joking," megumi deadpanned, "dadâs gonna start eating protein powder straight from the jar."
"megumi," toji barked, praying for divine intervention that would include his son being carried off by a stork, "youâre grounded."
"for what? telling the truth?"
before toji could escalate into full-on dad-mode, the game attendant â clearly desperate to avoid whatever domestic drama was brewing, handed toji a stuffed panda.
"here, sir, on the house," he said with a strained smile, like he was hoping toji wouldnât throw a ball through the booth.
toji grabbed the panda and shoved it into your hands with all the grace of a man trying to save face, "here. told you i'd win ya something."
you had just hugged the panda, still grinning ear to ear, "who knew you had a sweet spot? i'll cherish it forever, especially after hearing how hard you worked for it."
megumi, the little bastard, had already wandered off to scope out the cotton candy stand.
toji watched him go, then glanced at you, feeling oddly resigned, "iâm never bringing him to one of these again."
"oh, come on," you said, nudging him playfully, "i'm glad we came. this was fun. besides, he's a sweet kid."
he wondered if you were half-blind, but held his tongue. instead toji groaned, rubbing his temples, 'kidâs not eating for a week."
take #5 â brought the heat back!
it was a quiet thursday evening, the kind of night that lured people into thinking life wasnât a complete dumpster fire. the sky was fading into a smug sort of pink, and a light breeze was making it just nice enough to forget toji's apartment was a little too warm because heâd cheaped out on air conditioning.
youâd accepted his invitation for dinner, and now here he was, a grown man trying to pretend he wasnât about to impress the hell out of you with his cooking.
see, toji wasnât just some dude who could barely boil water. nah, this man knew his way around the kitchen â specifically around a bowl of spicy curry that could win hearts. but he couldnât let you know that.
toji liked to think that he had a reputation to uphold: rough around the edges, dangerously hot, and way too casual about everything.
so when you walked in, he scratched the back of his head like heâd just thrown the recipe together from a vague memory, muttering, "i dunno, figured i'd try somethinâ new. if itâs bad, thereâs takeout."
except this wasnât new. toji knew exactly what he was doing. his curry was legendary in very specific circles â namely, his own ego.
meanwhile, megumi was hanging around the kitchen like a suspicious little gargoyle, all quiet and sneaky-eyed. that shouldâve been the first warning sign.
and when dinner was served, toji had to admit it, it looked perfect. rich, golden curry with just the right balance of spice, heat curling off the plates like a victory lap. hah, an easy win.
you had taken a polite bite, smiling at first. until your face suddenly froze like you'd just been slapped by a fire demon.
"what, it's too spicy?" toji asked, as he watched you struggle to smile. your lips twitching like they were trying to run away.
"no, no!" you wheezed, "it's â it's really good. just got a lil' kick to it, that's all!"
kick? toji blinked. you looked as though you had been delivering a roundhouse to the face.
suspicious now, he scooped up a big bite himself. the moment it hit his tongue, he nearly choked. his sinuses exploded, his tongue went numb, and he could feel sweat instantly forming on his brow.
"what the fuck," he sputtered, slamming down his fork and lunging for his water. toji guzzled it like a man whoâd just escaped a desert, while you valiantly kept nibbling as though your dignity depended on it.
megumi, sitting way too calmly at the table, didnât even flinch. he was eating like the curry was perfectly fine, which made it even worse. this little freak.
toji squinted at his only child, "megumi. what did you do?"
"nothing," the kid said, wide-eyed and dripping with fake innocence. too fake, tsk, toji knew that look. "just...helped with the seasoning."
tojiâs stomach dropped, as his blood pressure rose, "how much seasoning?"
megumi shrugged, stabbing at his rice like he wasnât actively committing a felony, "i dunno. a lot. jus' wanted to be helpful, dad."
"y'trying to kill me? her? yourself?!"
you laughed nervously through the pain, "ah, toji. itâs really not that bad â"
"donât lie, doll" toji snapped, shooting you a look, "sweatin' like you ran a marathon."
"so are you!" you shot back, snickering. and you werenât wrong. toji's forehead looked like heâd just finished a full-body workout.
megumi leaned back in his chair, chewing slowly, and said with an infuriating amount of smugness, "i like spicy food."
toji pointed at him, wondering if it would be easier to pick up the kid and launch him out the window, "you better start liking ramen, âcause thatâs all youâre eating for the next week."
"fine with that," megumi said, clearly unbothered, "isn't that what i eat all the time anyway?â
toji groaned, dragging a hand through his messy hair, which now stuck to his forehead in sweaty, choppy strands.hHe turned to you, desperate for some kind of redemption. "this wasnât how it was supposed to go. itâs normally amazing. i swear."
"itâs fine," you laughed, even as you sipped water like your life depended on it. "honestly, i think itâs kinda cute."
that threw him for a loop. "cute? whatâs cute about this? i just served you a bowl of liquid hell."
you grinned, a little too amused for his liking. "itâs the effort."
toji, for once in his life, had no comeback. he just sighed, defeated, and grabbed his phone to order takeout. megumi, meanwhile, looked entirely too pleased with himself, even lifting the bowl to his lips to smack away the remnants of the soup that he slurped.
interlude: the peace talks
youâre standing outside toji's dingy apartment building, where even the cracks in the walls look like theyâve seen some things. youâre not entirely sure why youâre here. okay, thatâs a lie. youâre absolutely sureâ itâs because of him. that rough-edged, broad-shouldered man who can bench press your common sense into oblivion. but of course, youâre telling yourself itâs "just to check in."
totally innocent.
you knock. a few beats of silence, then the door creaks open just wide enough for a face to peek out. it's megumi fushiguro, toji's odd kid, and his expression already screams ugh. the kind of look that says, "what does this clown want?"
"uh, hi," you say, suddenly unsure if youâre allowed to be nervous around a first grader, "is toji here?"
megumi stares at you like you just asked if the sky was plaid, "nope," he says flatly, but doesnât move. he keeps the door partially open, like heâs either waiting for you to leave or deciding if youâre even worth his time.
"oh. okay, that's fine, i'll just â" you motion vaguely toward the stairs, already regretting this whole situation. but then the kid speaks up.
"why do you wanna see him?" his tone is casual, but his eyes? sharp like sea-glass. too sharp for someone so young. heâs leaning on the doorframe now.
you blink, mind going blank.
"i donât...i mean, i was just dropping by to say hi. thatâs all."
megumi tilts his head, scrutinising you like youâre a suspect in a crime only he knows about, "do you like my dad?"
you choke on what must be your last breath on this earth, "what?! no! i mean, what are you even saying, he's..."
youâre spiralling, and megumi's smug little smirk says he knows it. Heâs enjoying this way too much.
"sure," he says with a shrug, stepping back into the apartment. he leaves the door wide open like itâs an invitation â or maybe a saw trap. against your better judgment, you follow him in.
megumi plops down on the couch, picking up a laptop like youâre not even there, "youâre not the first," he mutters without looking up.
"whatâs that supposed to mean?" you ask, trying to sound casual but failing miserably.
he shrugs again, still not meeting your gaze, "just saying, dadâs got... fans." he says it with the kind of disdain only a kid can muster when talking about their parent, "but youâre, like... different."
"different how?" you ask, instantly regretting it. you shouldnât engage. this is toji's kid, not your personal gossip columnist.
megumi finally looks up, one eyebrow raised, "you donât seem as dumb as the other ones."
wow. compliment of the century. "that's way harsh. but thanks," you say dryly, crossing your arms. "and here i thought we were bonding."
thereâs a flicker of something else in the child's eyes. a glimmer of protectiveness, maybe, "look, i'm just saying...donât get your hopes up, okay? i don't think my dad's that type of guy."
you frown, perplexed at having this conversation with a child who barely comes up past your waist, "what makes you say that?"
megumi looks like heâs about to launch into a powerpoint presentation on why toji fushiguro Is a walking red flag, but then he stops. his petulant expression shifts, softens, just a little, "i don't anyone to be sad."
and there it is. the kid act drops for a split second, and you see it. heâs not just being a little punk â he's protecting himself. maybe heâs seen toji screw up one too many times, or maybe heâs tired of people coming and going from their lives. either way, you feel a pang of sympathy.
you sit down on the edge of the couch, careful not to invade his space, "i get it,â you say gently, "and i appreciate you looking out for me, and for your father. but...maybe your dadâs not as bad as you think."
megumi snorts, "yeah, right. i think he's a mess."
"well, sometimes messy people need someone to believe in them," you say, surprising even yourself with the honesty in your voice.
he doesnât respond right away, just stares at the laptop screen like it holds the answers to life. finally, he sighs, closing it with a decisive snap.
"fine. you can...hang out with him. or whatever. i won't pull any dumb shit,â megumi suddenly pauses at the slip of his tongue, âwait, don't tell him i said that word. but if this screws up, i'm saying âI told you so."
he sounds like heâs just agreed to let you borrow his favourite video game.
you smile, relieved, "deal."
just then, the front door opens, and in walks toji, all feathery raven hair, sweat-slicked muscles, and a duffel bag slung over his shoulder like heâs just conquered a small country. he pauses when he sees you, eyebrows raising in surprise. "hey, didnât expect to see you here," he says, voice rough but warm.
before you can respond, megumi pipes up from the couch, "we had important business."
megumi watches you leave, your footsteps echoing down the hallway. you turn back once, smiling at toji like heâs just said something funny â or maybe like heâs not completely hopeless. his dad stands in the doorway, looking uncharacteristically relaxed, a satisfied smirk on his face that makes megumi's stomach churn.
how disgusting.
the second the door clicks shut, toji sighs like some kind of romantic hero from the bad drama his dad loves to secretly watch, running a hand through his choppy black hair and scratching at the back of his neck.
"isn't she cute?" coming from a guy who once tried to flirt with a waitress by asking her how many push-ups she thought he could do.
toji disappears into his room, leaving young, burdened megumi stranded on the couch with his thoughts. his dad â the six-foot-four slab of muscle and bad decisions who calls protein shakes "wizard juice" â is clearly falling for you. and honestly? megumi doesnât hate the idea. youâre nice. you donât talk down to him like other adults, and you donât smell like motor oil and regret like toji's usual crowd.
but toji? his dad couldnât woo a cactus. if this is going to happen, megumi's going to have to step in. it's the responsible thing to do.
he grabs his laptop again, boots it up, and clicks on the email icon with all the gravitas of a general preparing for war.
to: [email protected] from: [email protected] subject: hey gojo i need help message: hey gojo i need help.
he hits send, satisfied. within ten minutes, thereâs a reply. gojo's always on his computer nowadays, swamped by senior finals.
to: [email protected] from: [email protected] subject: re: hey gojo i need help message: why are u emailing me. i feel weird emailing a six year old.
megumi rolls his eyes. heâs six, not stupid. he definitely thinks he's smarter than gojo satoru.
to: [email protected] from: [email protected] subject: re: re: hey gojo i need help message: i think my dad has a crush.
thereâs a pause. megumi imagines goji sitting in his weirdly pristine apartment downstairs, wearing those stupid sunglasses he insists are cool, trying to process what he just read.
the reply comes in two words.
to: [email protected] from: [email protected] subject: re: re: re: hey gojo i need help message: come downstairs.
then another one.
to: [email protected] from: [email protected] subject: re: re: re: hey gojo i need help message: letâs debrief. i got cookies.
megumi shuts his laptop, slides off the couch, and heads for the door. it's time someone with real intelligence got involved.
megumi fushiguro sits at the kitchen table, eating rainbow cereal and trying to ignore the way his dad is pacing the room like a stressed-out gorilla. toji fushiguro, a walking, grunting tank of a man, is mumbling under his breath about "women" and "bad timing" and something about his shirt being "too tight." not that his dad has any normal shirts â just those stupid gym shirts.
megumi, as the only person in this house with half a brain cell, knows exactly whatâs going on. his dad's got it bad for you.
not that he thinks that his dad would admit it. no, his dad's strategy for dealing with his obvious feelings is to act like a complete idiot whenever youâre around. last time, he dropped a dumbbell on himself while trying to show off. the time before that, he laughed so hard at one of your jokes he spat coffee everywhere. megumi had to clean it up.
so yeah, his dad was hopeless, and apparently, itâs megumi's job to fix it.
but megumi doesnât think of himself as a matchmaker. he thinks of himself as a tortured genius, forced to live among lesser idiots. and frankly, he doesnât even like the idea of his dad dating. because that's gross.
but the truth is, megumi's tired of toji stomping around the apartment like a lovesick rhino, and if getting you and his dad together means toji might finally stop asking megumi if his hair looks "cool," then so be it.
he starts small. when you knock on the door that afternoon, megumi answers and blocks the entrance like a bouncer, just like gojo told him to.
"oh, dad's not here again," he says, casual.
your face falls, and megumi immediately clocks it. bingo.
"you're in luck today, lady. wait here," he interrupts, darting inside, "i'll grab him."
except his dad is in there, muttering something about a broken pipe in the kitchen, while tapping furiously on his phone. megumi marches in, hands on his hips.
"i let her in," he announces, like a town crier.
his dad looks up, like a deer caught in the headlights of his own stupidity, "what? why didnât you tell me? damn punk," he scrambles for a shirt.
"i'm telling you now, dad," megumi says, dully, "also, youâre acting like a weirdo. just go talk to her. ask her out."
toji freezes, halfway into his shirt, "what's gotten into you, kid? gonna drop a knife on me, huh? what am i supposed to say?"
megumi resists the urge to roll his eyes so hard they fall out of his head, "i don't know. say hi to her. maybe don't mention the gym."
his dad frowns, "you're six, punk. what do you know? people like hearing about that shit."
"not normal people."
once toji is finally presentable â or as presentable as a man with permanent bedhead and a scar on his lip can be â megumi ushers him out of the room. then, like the misunderstood mastermind he is, megumi follows quietly, lurking behind the door to eavesdrop.
toji opens the door to find you standing there, fiddling with the strap of your bag. his usual dumb smirk creeps onto his face, "hey, didnât expect to see you here," he says, leaning on the doorframe like he thinks heâs starring in a cologne commercial.
"yeah, i was just...in the neighborhood," you say, sounding way too nervous for someone who claims this is a casual visit.
megumi winces. theyâre hopeless. this is your neighbourhood, too.
toji scratches the back of his neck, a nervous tick Megumiâs only seen when heâs trying not to embarrass himself, "well, uh, you wanna come in? i was just... doing some cleaning. we can...talk, or some shit like that."
megumi knows for a fact that there's a lie in toji's words. the only cleaning his dad's ever done is shoving everything into the closet and calling it "organised."
but somehow, it works. you step inside, smiling at him like he just offered you free ice cream. now, that would be a decent offer.
from his spot behind the door, megumi mentally pats himself on the back. phase one: complete. he decides to clock out, flopping back on his rumpled bed to pull his laptop back out, immediately logging back onto his game.
but by the time you leave an hour later, toji looks like he just won the lottery. youâre smiling too, waving awkwardly before heading down the stairs. and ugh, gross! you lean in and press a soft kiss to toji's cheek before you turn.
as soon as the door shuts, toji leans against it and lets out the most ridiculous sigh megumi has ever heard.
"hah, kid. she likes me," his dad says, grinning like a lovesick idiot.
megumi, standing in the doorway to the kitchen, crosses his arms, "that's foul. but no thanks to you."
his dad opens one sharp green eye at him, and scowls. "whatâs that supposed to mean?"
"it means," megumi says, feeling a lifetime of bribery for ice-cream excite him, "you owe me. big time."
tojiâs standing in the doorway, looking at megumi like he just asked him to join some cult. he scratches the back of his head, giving megumi that look â like heâs trying to figure out what the hell his kid is up to now.
"eh, you look weird today," toji mutters, a half-smirk tugging at his lips. he reaches down and ruffles megumiâs hair like itâs no big deal, making it stick up even more. his hair gets all spiky and untamable, and megumi scowls, smoothing it down, trying (and failing) to get his dark spikes to behave.
"yeah, whatever, dad," megumi mutters under his breath as toji turns and saunters off into his room. tojiâs probably about to do a hundred push-ups and gloat to himself. megumi can already hear the dumb grunting from the other room.
as soon as tojiâs gone, megumi sits back down at the table, shoveling a spoonful of cereal into his mouth.
for once, the apartment is quiet. no random phone calls, no weird people showing up, no random training sessions that sound more like a one-man wrecking crew than âexercise.â just peace.
itâs bliss.
he takes another bite of cereal, enjoying the calm and the fact that someone else is going to have to deal with tojiâs nonsense for once. itâs about time.
to: [email protected] from: [email protected] subject: mission accomplished message: it worked. my dad's in love.
a few seconds later, gojoâs reply pops up.
to: [email protected] from: [email protected] subject: re: mission accomplished message: that's great! wanna help me with the guy i like?
megumi squints at the screen, blinking twice. he closes his laptop with all the gravity of someone who has just solved world peace.
to: [email protected] from: [email protected] subject: re: re: mission accomplished message: no.

Thinking about the lifespans of Dungeon Meshi elves... The fact that they're completely unnatural alters my brain chemistry, because you can tell just how haphazardly the demon implemented their wish. They live five times the length of tall-men, so they age at a fifth of their rate. It's simple maths and the implications are terrifying. No wonder their birth rate and population are declining - their early development is so slow that at the age of two, they're still unable to stand.
They don't reach adulthood until their eighties. What does the infant mortality look like? How many elves succumb to illness or injury before they're fully mature? It only takes one accident to lose the child you've been raising for decades - and could you bring yourself to care for another? Add to that the implication elf culture has no idea how to process grief... just look at the way the Canaries treat Rin after the death of her parents. They're callous and insensitive and detached - part of that's racism, but there's also an element of pure cold ignorance. They don't even recognise the emotion on her face.
And that's just scratching the surface... does elven memory accommodate their extended lifespan? Once you reach two hundred or so, do the years start blurring together? Kabru mentions that their temporal awareness is remarkably poor.
Two years feel like a few months. Their lives are longer but not fuller. They're older but not wiser than the short-lived races, and most refuse to understand this. Those that do grasp it are interesting - namely Otta, who's ostracised for pursuing half-foot women.
A 30-year old elf is a young child; a 30-year old half-foot has entered middle age. Otta is in the equivalent of her late twenties. She knows that her elven lifespan makes her no more mature than a half-foot - but she also acknowledges that it creates a rift between herself and her partners, and not just in the eyes of society. 'She dumps them as soon as they pass 30', but probably not for the reasons Lycion assumes. For this to be a pattern, decades must have passed - it's possible Otta doesn't want to watch them die as she herself barely ages. No doubt some of her previous lovers have already passed away. In the end, all living 400 years accomplishes is leaving them out of sync with the rest of humanity.
Marcille's perhaps the best example. As a half-elf, she's got 95% of her life ahead and the thought terrifies her. She's going to lose everyone she loves, over and over and over again, and this cycle has barely even started. She runs at a different pace. This context adds so much to her dynamic with Falin in earlier chapters.
Marcille loves her! She's scared for her! Maybe even of her! She's grown attached to a short-lived girl who she met as a kid when Marcille was a teaching assistant! Biologically and developmentally, they're the same age, but chronologically she's twice as old as Falin! Considering what happened to her mother, is history repeating itself? Her feelings towards Falin are tangled and messy and fascinating. They're also more than a little homoerotic, which makes Marcille's infantilization of her friend all the more interesting. It feels like her way of resolving their power imbalance, of remaining a responsible (former!) authority figure... but it's also a coping mechanism. She's frightened by the ways Falin is maturing and changing - aging - and keeping her mental image of her friend as young as possible is her way of denying the march of time that's destined to sever their bond.
Marcille's dream of lifespan extension would remove the need for this obfuscation, render them equal... only, they already are! This desire is imposed onto Falin, but it's primarily for Marcille's benefit. Watching her fight for a world nobody wants, for reasons both selfish and altruistic... it's as tragic as it is understandable. I love this manga.

âcrawl home to herâ | 7.5k
old man!logan x f!reader
SUMMARY: Will he be able to control himself once he's near you? In this moment, he feels more animal than human. Creeping, on the verge of crawling, back to you. OR Like a sinner seeking absolution, he finds his way back to you after every absence, as if you're the only salvation he's ever known.
WARNINGS/TAGS: mdni smut 18+ cursing. drinking. dirty talk. some fluff. comfort. feelings. self-deprecation. miscommunication. sort of established relationship. age gap (reader's in her late 20s). petnames. religious imagery. logan's POV. chauffeur!logan. dom!logan. reader wears logan's dog tags and clothes. pussy pronouns. phone sex. oral sex (f and m receiving). 69. fingering. masturbation (he jerks off in the limo). one (1) single spank. sort of rough sex. unprotected p in v. creampie.
A/N: i wrote this as a part 2 of this story, but still, it can be read as a standalone (i'd recommend that you also read the first part as well đ you'll understand their relationship better). hope you like this one! <3
Logan is tired. Bone-deep, soul-crushingly tired.
He takes a slow, deliberate drag from his cigar, letting the smoke curl inside his chest, teasing his lungs. Doesnât even bother to crack the window openâwhy would he?âbefore exhaling, the haze lingering inside the limo like a fog.
One quick glance at his phone screen just to make sure his vision isnât screwing him overâno older notifications. A pang of disillusionment settles in his being.
Not only is he fighting to keep his eyes open, exhausted from driving the same family around for the past few days while they enjoy their quality time, but heâs also bored out of his mind.Â
Where the hell are you?
He adjusts his glasses, pushing them higher up on the bridge of his nose, preventing them from sliding down to his lap. When his phone buzzes, he jolts, nearly hitting his head on the roof of the limo due to his excitement.
His poor heart gallops as he fumbles with the screen, unlocking it with the same urgency as a man starved for contact.
But itâs not you. Itâs one of his passengers.
Weâre getting out in half an hour, the message reads. By we, she means herself, her husband, and their two kids.
Logan canât bring himself to type an actual reply, so he leaves her on read. She knows heâs not going anywhere, parked outside the arcade as if heâs rooted in place with no way out.
Family after family enters that hell on earth, kids of all ages bouncing on their heels, voices shrill with enthusiasm. He watches, half-heartedly, as parents get dragged by their little ones, who negotiate how much money they are allowed to spend tonight.
He almost feels bad for those parents. Almost. He hopes that at least they know how to say âNoâ.
All in all, heâs got another thirty minutes of solitude ahead. The radio has long since ceased to entertain him. Heâs been parked here for two hours, and his mind is starting to drift. He could stretch his legs, walk around, or maybe grab a drinkâbut damn it.
He wants to talk to you.
Youâd said he could call you after dropping the family off. That was three hours ago. The last message he received from you was still stuck in his head, replaying over and over like a lifeline. Logan knows you must be busy, probably taking care of Charles andâ
Okay, heâll get back to that later.Â
You: Just got out of the shower. Call me in five?
Right now, he could die a happy man. Were he a dog, his tail would be wagging furiously, anticipation already building for the simple joy of hearing you.
Logan: Got it.
The next five minutes feel like an eternity. He finishes his cigar, flicking the stub beneath the seat without giving it a second thought. For now, he doesnât care about being a messy fucker. Heâll deal with the mess some other time.
Priorities.
A quick spritz of some cheap air freshener he picked up from a gas station fills the car, masking the distinctive scent of smoke. God forbid the kids start whining about how âweirdâ it smells in the limo.
With a grimace, he sprays a little moreâfloral, of all scents? It feels insulting.
How kind of him to still be this considerate.
His thumb hovers over your contact, and he presses the call button with an agility he hasnât had in years (thanks to you).
One, two, three rings, and thenâ
âLogan,â you say softly, your voice a little breathless, like youâve been hurrying all over the place.
He stops grinding his jaw, the tension in his shoulders easing. He unclenches his fists, fingers uncurling one by one, as if letting go of some invisible burden.
Outside the vehicle, people stop dying, babies stop being born, and the world itself pauses just for him to listen to you.
You canât see him, but he smiles either way. âHey, baby.â
âGosh, Iâm so sorry. I lost track of time talking to Charles. We had dinner, and then I justâI felt so gross, you know? From cooking and all that. Took a shower, and it got pretty late.â
You end with a sigh, and he imagines you rubbing a hand over your face. âPlease tell me you werenât sleeping when I texted you.â
âNot even close. Still waiting for them.â
âTheyâre really taking their time, huh?â
âYou wouldnât believe it,â he murmurs, his fingers drumming a soft rhythm on the steering wheel. âHow was your day?â
âGreat! Iâm already in bed.â
âMy bed.â
You laugh, that sweet sound making his heart stutter. âWell, yeah. Where else do you want me to sleep if Iâm at your place? On the floor?â
If someone had told Logan a year ago that heâd let someone live in his space, let alone take care of Charles, heâd have scoffed. "Pathetic," heâd have said, rolling his eyes with that familiar growl in his throat. Pretty sure heâd also puffed his chest while saying so.
Because Logan Howlett wasnât one for accepting help. Heâs been on his own since the earth was still cooling down.
But for you? He made exceptions. Plenty of them. And if it werenât for your altruism, he wouldnât have accepted this jobâa job that pays well enough to cover Charlesâ meds and put food on the table. He needs this rich familyâs money.
âYouâve got a girlfriend now?â Charles had asked, when Logan explained heâd be staying with you while he went away for a few days.
âBig word youâre using there,â Logan had replied, placing two pills into Charlesâ palm. The old man gave him a death stare. âDonât play dumb. Itâs not like you donât know the drill.â
Mumbling something incoherent before swallowing the pills, Charles had taken slow sips of water between each one, sinking back into the mattress with a weary sigh. âIf sheâs not your girlfriend, then what is she?â
âA friend.â
âThatâs nice. Is that what theyâre calling it now?â
He shakes that memory away, forcing his mind back to the call. âTry not to be so kind to him. What if he falls in love with you?â he inquires, a mocking tone weaving through his words.Â
And thatâs when you drop the bombshell. âYou mean like you did?âÂ
You laugh, but Logan⊠doesnât. He canât do it. He makes sure heâs breathing on command: in and out, in and out, in and out.Â
The mention of love unsettles him. He doesnât feel safe anymore, doesnât know what game youâre playing. Whereâs the rulebook?
Is heâcould he beâfalling in love with you? Is that what youâre implying? And if so, do you feel the same?
In the long run, you mumble: âIt was a joke.â Only then do his lungs fill with fresh air, untainted by the weight of his unease. But he canât let it pass, the fact you sound disappointed. Defeated.
He promised himself heâd never hurt you. Though he doesnât intend to, it feels as if heâs just stabbed you in the back, twisting the knife further into your frameâunwillingly.
âRemember theââ he pauses a moment, throwing his head back in frustration, silently cursing himself. âThe pills. Youâve been giving them to him, right?â
âYes, Logan.â
âPlease, remember itâs onlyââ
âLogan,â you try again, cutting through the wave of his spiraling thoughts. He can picture you behind closed lids, looking at him through your lashes, your hand resting gently on his chest. âI have it under control, okay? Heâs doing alright. I swear Iâm taking good care of him.â
âI donât doubt that, honey.â Casting a glance at the rearview mirror, he feels an unexpected sense of longing for your presence there, like a ghost haunting his every move, confined to the limits of his brain. âCanât help but worry. Thatâs all.â
A soft hum reverberates through the line. He hears the rustle of sheets, the sound of you tossing around in his bed, and his pulse quickens at the thought.
âYou said youâre sleepinâ on my bed.â
âGood memory you have.â
âYou wearinâ my clothes as well?â
Thick silence, the kind he relishes.
âYeah,â you finally reply, shifting the phone from side to side. You take a deep breath, and add: âI forgot to bring mine.â
He hates how you easily find a way to get him riled up despite being miles away. It must be the power of words.
âI donât believe you.â He knows he shouldnât, hates himself for doing it, but one of his hands palms the half-hard bulge in his black slacks, suppressing a low groan. âThink you did it on purpose.â
A rush of heat, sharp and urgent, washes over him. Is he really about to do this? Get himself off in the very car he uses for work? Twisted, incredibly sick of him, he thinks.
Still, he craves more. âTell me what youâre wearing.â
You laugh at his demanding tone, fanning the flames of his desperation. âWhen did you turn into a horny teenager?â
âAlways been, baby,â Logan purrs, undoing the button of his pants, followed by the fly. His eyes flick upwards for just a momentâno cars, no one in sight. Heâs presumably alone. Itâs all the confirmation he needs to say: âCâmon. Tell your old man what clothes you stole from him.â
Heâs never done this beforeâphone sex. Heâs heard about it, sure, but never imagined heâd fall so hard for the idea. The thrill of it sinks into him, electrifying.
What are you doing? Is your lip caught between your teeth? Do your eyes wander down your own body? Maybe your fingers are already skimming over your skin.
âItâs just a random shirt,â you murmur. âPlain, white.â
âWhat else?â
âThereâs nothing else.â
Loganâs breath hitches as his hand moves to his cock, spotting the damp patch on his briefs where the tip has already started to leak. The moment he slides the elastic down past his balls, he fists his shaft in a slow stroke, going from the base to the head. âNo panties? And you expect me tâbelieve this wasnât planned?â
Your muffled whimper is like molten lava spilling into his ear, bringing him to full hardness. More shuffling follows on your end, driving him wild with the anticipation. âWhy do you do this to me if youâre not here?â
ââCause I want you touchinâ yourself just like Iâm doinâ.â He thumbs the head, hips jerking involuntarily at the sensation. He aches to feel your mouth there instead. âBet that pussyâs been cryinâ out for me, huh? Mustâve got used to me fillinâ her every other night.â
Your breathing grows more uneven, small gasps filtering through the speaker. âI need you here with me. This isâughânot enough.â
âWhatâs not enough, sweetheart?â
Thereâs a pause as the sound of your phone shifts again, and then he hears it clearlyâthe wet, needy sound of your fingers working between your legs, filling the silence with the loud squelching of your cunt. âMy fingers,â you blurt out, more distant than before, like youâre merging with the bed, dissolving with every touch.
Logan spits roughly into his palm, the slickness of his saliva easing the drag of his calloused hand along his length, good enough to make the movement more satisfying.
He moans aloud, eyes shut tight, your name slipping from his lips, a whispered prayer, as if saying it could somehow summon you to his side. âI spoil you too much,â he rasps, wedging his phone between his ear and shoulder, using every resource available to him, anything to feel something real. âSeems like youâve forgotten how to make yourself come.â
Your moans follow his, the breathy sounds a clear sign of how close you are, hanging on the edge, your release just a heartbeat away. But itâs not enough, and you need him. He wonders if you can feel his thoughts from miles away, becauseâ âWant your cock so bad, Lo. I m-miss you.â
He has to stop jerking himself to hold off his orgasm, stomping his foot against the pedals. âFuck, darlinâ. You keep sayinâ those things and I swear Iâll be back with you by morning.â
His sole focus now is youâgetting you to come. Driven by his growing frenzy, itâs the only coherent thought that claws through the haze in his mind. âKeep talking, please,â you plead, fingers still lost in the heat of your body. âTell me what youâll do to me when you see me.â
Logan picks up the rhythm again, his movements faltering as his chest heaves, ragged breaths spilling out while his hand works faster. âGonna fuck you slow and deep, just how you like it. Face to face, so you can kiss me as much as you want, âcause I know my girl loves that, am I right?â
My girl. Heâll regret that one the second the high fades and clarity sets in.
Word after word falls from his lips without thought, uncontrollable, as though heâs surrendered to the storm of desire raging in his beingâa storm in which your name is the eye of it all.
You are everywhere, and you take up all the empty spaces he thought were impossible to fill, sinking into the depths of his unconsciousness.
Not a single part of him is left untouched by you, by the power of your presence in his life, consuming him in ways he never imagined.
Your airy mewls ripple through the line, feeding his ravenousness, adding to the tightening knot of pleasure coiling low in his abdomen. His muscles strain, thighs tensing. Each stroke of his hand prolongs this sweet torture.Â
âCome for me, princess. Youâd make me so h-happy if you came right now.â
And you do, because itâs not just his touch anymoreâitâs his voice, and the way he commands you without force. How youâve become accustomed to him, nodding along to each instruction he mutters.
Beneath your fingers, your swollen clit pulses, and though he canât see it, he imagines it perfectly, having spent enough time worshiping it.
He knows, even from a distance, what your body must be doing. Your back arching off the bed, thighs quivering and clenching tight around your own hand. Those perfect legs of yours trembling as you reach your so-desired climax.
Loud and unrestrained, you moan, and for a moment, he wants to be with you so badly that he ponders if the theory of traveling across time and space sounds that far-fetched after all.
Logan doesn't need much after that for the thread to snap at long last, his groans dying on his lips as he stares in awe at the spurts of his seed landing wherever his eyes fall: a bit on the top of his pants, on his hand, his briefs. His cock twitches in his grip as he continues stroking himself through the aftershocks, gulping when it becomes too much to handle.
So phone sex is off the list now. Great.
âMiss you, too,â he mumbles once heâs caught his breath, tossing his glasses onto the passenger seat. His forehead feels damp to the touch, and he contemplates when was the last time he came this hard.
The elephant in the room hasnât been addressed yet. He knows you expect him to say more, something deeper and rawer, but thatâs all he can force himself to spit out.
Sometimes, he forgets that you canât read him all the time. Although you know him better than anyone else, there are certain thoughts and memories locked tightly inside him, things you'd never discover on your own. Secrets he admits he should share with you, but heâs at a loss for how. Words arenât doable when he needs them the most.
Maybe it's a matter of ageâyouâre a natural at voicing your feelings.
At some point, you ask: âWhen did you say you were returning?â
One thingâs clear: he canât afford to lose you. Heâd be an idiot if he let that happen.
âIn five days, I think.â Were he with you, he'd hold you in his arms, kissing your lips. God, how he misses kissing you. All of you. âIâll keep you updated.â
âItâs okay,â you respond, and in his mind, a blank canvas fills with the familiar image of you lying on your side, curling into a ball the way you always do. âI should go to sleep. Talk to you tomorrow.â
âSure.â Thank you for everything. âGet some rest.â Are you still in love with me? âBye.â Iâm coming back. You know how I feel about you, do you?
So much left unsaid, words he lacks the strength to speak. That, along with his come-stained clothes. And, of course, the limousine now perfumed like a flower shop.
Exhaustion clings to him again.
His luck has never been this good.
The next afternoon, one of the coupleâs kids falls ill. Must be something he ate, the woman tells Logan, her voice light, though he can hear the shuffle of urgency behind her words.
Her husband packs their bags in the background, the muted thuds of luggage hitting the floor. You know how children are. Their hands are always filthy!
What she doesnât realize is that Logan, in fact, doesnât know how children are, because how could he?
Heâs holed up in the hotel across the street, his only responsibility being to wait on their call, ready to drive whenever they needed him. Needless to say, his accommodations are nothing like theirs. Not that he minds itâheâs not one for luxury, has never needed it.
Truth be told, heâs no stranger to beds that groan if you shift slightly, clogged toilets that spit back water like theyâre alive.
Joy rushes through him when he hears the news. Heâs coming back earlier than expected, a thrill building in his chest. Twelve days heâs been away, his greed growing with each second in that desolate hotel room.
Now, the beating of his heart quickens, a faint thrumming as he stares out the window. He debates whether to let you know about his early return or keep it as a surprise. Would it be better if he just showed up?
How would you feel, knowing that, by the time the lights are out, heâll be yours again?
He knows he should feel sorry for the poor kid, but all he can muster is a look of concern that barely reaches his eyes. Each time they pull into a gas station, he listens to the hurried slap of footsteps as the boy rushes for the bathroom to empty his insides.
He watches in the rearview as the kidâs father shakes his head, clicking his tongue with disapproval. âDo you have kids?â he asks, his voice forced into a casual tone, like heâs trying to break the silence thatâs settled between them.Â
Loganâs only response is to turn up the radio, some pop song heâs never heard spilling from the speakers. The lyrics are a blur of nonsense to him, but itâs enough to drown out the manâs words and the boyâs misery.
Some things never change.
As the sun dips below the horizon, heâs finally free, no longer at anyoneâs beck and call. He contemplates the possibility of getting a speeding ticket, weighing his options. It hardly matters. The pull to see you, to feel you, is stronger than anything else.
Even though he tries to think of another time in his life when he felt such a raw need, no memory comes close.
When he does pull up to his place, he does it quietly. Parking the limo, he doesnât honk, doesnât announce himself. Fumbling with the keys ever so lightly so as not to wake you up, fitting them into the lock.
His wrist twists, and the door gives way with a soft creak.
Anxiety ripples through him as he steps inside. The smell of freshly cooked food hits him, but it only tightens the knot in his stomach, reminding him of how long itâs been since he last ate.
Later, he tells himself. After. Once heâs sated his true hungerâthe kind of hunger that can only be satisfied by sinking his fingers into something real, fleshy, malleable.Â
Hungerâyes, itâs animalistic, feral even. Will he be able to control himself once heâs near you? In moments like this, he feels more animal than human. Creeping, on the verge of crawling, back to you.
His feet take him to his bedroom, knowing the path to it very well. Fingers hovering over the knob, he takes a deep breath.
Itâs already late, past midnight, yet energy courses through his veins as though heâs just woken from a long, ethereal dream.
He finds you asleep, your body wrapped snugly in the sheets, clutching a pillow close to your chest. Your cheek is pressed into it, breathing soft and steady, lulling him in. Kneeling on the edge of the bed, he kicks off his shoes, then slips in beside you, mirroring your position.Â
A lamp sits on his nightstand, one that isnât his, and he figures you must have brought it from your apartment. There has to be a symbolism for that.
Itâs incredible how his entire world can fit into such a narrow bed.
The smart thing would be to let you sleep, to simply watch you for a moment longer. But he canât help himself.
His thumb lingers near your face before gently cupping your cheek, and the very first contact with your skin sends a shudder through him, the warmth of your skin grounding him. He trails his fingers down to your chin, holding it with just enough pressure to remind himself that heâs here.
Leaning in, he presses his lips softly against your forehead, your typical perfume wrapping around him like a welcome.
Welcome home, Logan.
For the first time, he feels that someoneâs been counting down the minutes until his return. Heâd always believed a person like him didnât deserve this. That he just wasnât built for it.
Countless years had he spent convincing himself heâd never be the kind of man who could inspire love. His life had already been written long agoâpredetermined by some cruel hand in the sky.
Destiny, fate, call it what you wantâonce the cards are laid out, thereâs no escaping them. Or so he used to think.
You had taken that pen into your own hands, rewriting his future. You, of all people, had changed his life. No matter what the future held for the two of you, heâd always be grateful. Grateful that youâd seen the dim spark in him that others had chosen to ignore.
Thoughtlessly, his fingers continue their gentle strokes along your cheek, your hair. You stir beside him, shifting in your sleep. Your eyes flutter open, close again, and then open once more, blinking in confusion.
âLogan?â you croak, voice still groggy and thick with sleep, coming to your senses. Before he can respond, you throw yourself on top of him, smothering his face with kisses. âWhyâhowââ
âSweetheart,â he says, attempting to hide his grin, but failing when your kisses shift to his neck, your nose nuzzling against his skin. A laugh slips out, warmth flooding his chest.
âYou didnât tell me you were coming home early!â
Home. Had he heard right? Had you used that word knowingly?
Peering into your eyes, he catches his reflection in your pupils, tiredness etched into his features. âWanted it to be a surprise.â
âYou couldâve told me,â you reply, fingers threading through his greying locks, massaging his scalp. You place a tender kiss on the tip of his nose. âI wouldâve waited up for you at least.â
âWell, Iâm here now,â he whispers back, gaze drifting to your lips, and you close the space between you, his sigh mingling with yours as one hand cradles the small of your back, fisting the fabric of his shirt. His other hand tilts your head, inviting your tongues to greet each other in an unhurried dance.
You move languidly on top of him, and he notices, breaking the kiss and pulling back. âYouâre gonna fall asleep on me, are you?â
The way your lashes flutter in response should be illegal. âI could use a human-size pillow.â
âI should shower first.â
âNo.â
âBaby, I smell like gas.â
âSo?â
A smirk tugs at his lips at your insistence, and he gently lays you back against the mattress. Drawn to your charm once again, he licks into your mouth, mentally scolding himself when he gets carried away, letting the kiss linger longer than intended.
âIâll be quick,â he promises, pulling the sheets over your body. Resigned, you simply nod, settling on your side.
Ten minutes later, youâre dozing off, teetering on the edge of unconsciousness when he slips into bed, wrapping himself around you from behind. One arm drapes over your waist, the other cushions your head, and thereâs not a patch of skin between you left untouched.
Fatigue begins to delve deeper into his bones the longer he stays curled around you, but before the weight of sleep takes him, and the silence steals his chance, he huffs: âI missed you.â His beard grazes your skin in a soft, unintentional caress.
You pull his wrist to your lips, pressing a short-lived kiss to the inside of it. âMissed you, too.â
How the roles have reversed.
In the quietness of this starless night, you leave him no other choice but to believe you.
3:34 a.m. Still hostage to the lack of light outside. The world remains submerged in the gentle tides of sleep, undulating between dreams, except for him.
Logan wakes up at 3:34 a.m. because heâs rock hard, and being flushed against your back wasnât helping him with his situation at all. If anything, it only heightened it.
He sits at the edge of the bed, his mind running in circles, debating whether he should jump to his feet and head to the bathroom for another showerâthis time, a cold one. Returning to sleep, at least in this moment, is not a viable option.
His gaze drifts to the moonlight spilling through the window, casting its pale glow across the room. Is this your doing? The question lingers, unshakable, in his thoughts. It remains as just that: a question.
When you quietly rest your chin on his shoulder, he stifles a sigh, biting the inside of his cheek. Your voice breaks through the quiet.
âWhatâs wrong? Canât sleep?â Wrapping your arms around him from behind, you circle his frame, in an effort to persuade him to sink back into the mattress.
âItâs nothing,â he says, pulse accelerating. Please, donât look down. âIâll be back in a second.â
âBut what isââ
He doesnât get to hear the rest of your sentence. You do look down, finding the outline of his hardened cock straining against his briefs, stealing your full attention.
âWow.â
âGo back to sleep.â
âAnd leave you like this?â One hand creeps toward his waistband, your breath warm against his ear. âWouldnât miss this for anything in the world.â
Your nails trace a path through the coarse hair at his navel, and Logan tenses. His legs feel like jelly as you cup his balls, fondling them gently between your fingers.
Behind him, your low chuckle stirs something primal in him, making his blood thrum hot beneath his skin. He should be the one doing this to you, not the other way around.
âDarlinâ, I donâtââ Heâs cut off by his own guttural groan when you fist his length, pumping him in rhythm with his uneven breaths. âI donât need this.â
âSeems like you do,â you whisper, momentarily halting your ministrations to place your palm in front of his face, hoping he takes the hint. You kiss his stubble, pausing just short of his mouth. âI want to take care of you. Always do.â
Your palm hovers before him, inviting. Grabbing your wrist, he licks it, coating it in his spit and guiding you back down to him. Together, your hands glide along his length, and his gaze locks onto yours, the intensity of it making his neck tense.
You beam with delight under his stare. That red organ caged within his ribsâa blood-pumping machine of passionâsurges back to life as he sees you.
He had won the battle. He had triumphed over his past; had lived enough lives, endured enough years, to arrive at this moment.
This had to be the purpose of his existence: to share this part of his stay on earth with you.
âYouâre so hard,â you say, twisting your wrist at the tip of his cock, reveling in every buck of his hips, each movement a reflection of his exaltation. âGuess you did miss me.â
With a quiet growl, he reaches behind, nudging your thighs apart until they find your mound, cupping you through your underwear. âIâm not the only one whoâs been missinâ someone.â He pulls the fabric aside, sliding his fingers through your wet folds. His nostrils flare as he feels how ready you are. âWhy am I not surprised?â
Your breath hitches, and you press yourself closer against him, your tits against his back, mouth teasing at his neck. âThatâs what happens when youâre gone.â Another kiss on his nape. âYou could take me with you next time.â
âCanât do that,â he answers, teasing your entrance. âNo work would get done.â
His movements cease to a stop. Yours do too. Turning his head just enough to glance over his shoulder, he scrutinizes your expression, pride swelling in his chest as he takes in your affected state.
âYouâre not goinâ back to sleep, are you?â
Thereâs the shake of your head. A single word escapes your lips, imbued with pure fervor: âPlease.â
He captures your mouth in an ardent kiss, tugging at your shirt (which is, in fact, his) to undress you, his wandering hands roaming beneath it.
As his mouth meets your neck, something cold brushes against his lips, drawing his gaze down to whatâs hanging from your neck.
His dog tags. The ones he had given you before leaving for that job, as his way of telling you Iâm coming back without having to say it aloud. And you, as always, understood; had even promised to keep them safe, though he hadnât expected you to actually wear them.
Now, with your shirt discarded, they lay against your bare skin, his name resting in the valley between your breasts.
âYou like âem?â His fingers grip the chain and give it a gentle tug, drawing you closer so he can breathe over your lips, his breath mingling with yours. âLike knowing youâre mine? You get off on it?â
You nod in agreement. Of course, you do. Though emotionally constipated and not the most expressive, Logan is a lover who knows how to awaken desireâa good lover, indeed. A decent one.
Which is why he agrees to any idea that crosses your mind, like the one you just whispered in his ear.
He may be older than you, but heâs always been more on the traditional side. You, on the other hand, are continually searching for new ways to innovate.
The round globes of your ass jiggle over his face as he spreads you apart, entrenched by how your skin moves above him, your glistening hole clenching around nothing, as if your body itself is calling to him.
With his head propped against the headboard, he watches you take him deeper, your saliva dripping down the wiry hairs of his cock. The slick heat of your tongue traces over his slit, back and forth, driving him to the edge.
When he hears you gag, it stirs something inside himâa deep need to return the favor, to match your devotion.
At the end of the day, heâs a man on a mission, and right now, that mission is you.
Right there, with his nose and mouth buried in you, he wonders why he hadn't thought of this sooner. If he could choose a natural end like any other man, he'd wish for it to be by suffocationâyour body his last breath.
Logan inhales deeply, like a man starved, working two of his fingers inside your throbbing center, his tongue flicking relentlessly over your clit, punching moan after moan out of you. Each thrust of his fingers, each stroke of his tongue, sends waves of pleasure coursing through you.
His beard, streaked with gray, leaves a trail of fire wherever your hips meet his face, pushing back against him. Every so often, you pull off his cock just to ramble, panting, about how good he's making you feel.
From where he lies, youâre a sight to behold, nothing short of divine. âJust what I needed, doll. You taste so fuckinâ sweet,â he blurts out, your frantic cries pouring into his ears as he sucks the swollen bud between his lips. âCanât believe you let me do this to you. You love makinâ your old man happy, donât you?â
He used to think he'd burn in hell for indulging in the desire to know you like thisâraw, ungraceful.
His judgment must be fucked up, because now, all he sees in you is heaven incarnate. You must be the closest thing to it heâll ever find.
âShit, IâŠâ you trail off, gasping as he replaces his fingers with his tongue, drinking from your arousal and tasting every bit of you. âI thought about you every day.â
âBet you did, just like that night I called you. You know how I felt when you told me you were wearing my clothes?â His hand comes down with a firm slap on your right asscheek, drawing a whine from you as your movements falter. âCan smell you all over these sheets. Makes me wonder how many times you made yourself come while I was away.â
You slip the tip of his cock back in your mouth, your hands and lips working in sync. His nose brushes against the plush skin of your thighs before his teeth graze your flesh, biting down just enough to leave a sting. His fingers curl inside you, hitting that perfect spot again and again, and you moan around him, your throat vibrating against his length.
He makes you come like this, knuckles deep inside you while his thumb circles your clit. Overwhelmed by pleasure, you let go of his dick, and it hits Loganâs stomach with a wet pop. His strong arms tug you closer to his face, eyes falling closed as you ride the wave of your orgasm against his mouth, palms pressed flat on his chest.
For a brief moment, he canât breathe, canât feel anything but you, your scent, your taste filling his senses.
Later, he rolls you onto your back and climbs on top of you, uncertain of how much time he has spent lapping at your wetness. His hard length glides along your folds, and he lines himself up without pushing in, looking right into your eyes.Â
âRemember what I told you that night over the phone?â he asks, his breath coming in quick bursts, and you nod, head lolling back as he pinches your lower lip between his fingers. âRepeat it.â
âLoganââ
âYou say it, and Iâll make it happen.â
Perplexity clouds your features. âYou said youâd fuck me slow and deep, just h-how I like it. Face to face, becauseââ. The words escape you, a sob tearing through your throat as he eases the first few inches of himself inside you, your walls instinctively making space to wrap around him.
Heâs home.
âGo on. What else did I say?â he teases, relishing in it. Heâs guilty as sin. âOr were you too lost in thought touchinâ yourself?â
âF-face to face,â you slur, nails digging into his scarred back, and he keeps plunging his length into your interior to the hilt. Your lips part slightly, craving the kiss that only he can give you. âYou said youâd do it face to face so I could kiss you whenever I wanted.â
He hums, low in his throat, as he gives the first thrust of the night, taking great pleasure in your expression: open-mouthed, eyes scrunched, and a slight crease forming between your brows.
Smoothing his thumb over your forehead, he tsks, pausing his movements. âNone of that, princess. Look at me, câmon.â
You obey, forcing your eyes open, and in that instant, he swears he can feel every tremor coursing through you. âLogan,â you coo, your voice aching as you stretch your neck toward his mouth.
The way you say his nameâseductively, charged with a fascination that riles him upâmanages to ignite a fire only you can kindle. Itâs all the invitation he needs.
âI know. Too much, huh?â His tone drips with condescension, teasing in a way that feels almost cruel. He canât help it, though: itâs in very his nature. âNeed to hear you say it. Need you to tell me how much you want this.â
Like everything else in your world, your patience begins to wither, hips instinctively bucking beneath him, seeking even the slightest bit of friction. But he still withholds the kiss you long for, dangling it just out of reach.
âPlease,â you beg, voice breaking as you plead. âFuck me, baby. Missed you so much while you were away. Please, please, pleaseââ
Logan enjoys hearing you beg. He wonât pretend otherwise. There's a satisfaction in knowing he holds this power over you, that he's the only one who can unravel you this way, your body splayed open beneath him.
The thought of others who may have once been in his place, making you fall apart just like this, sets his blood on edge.
Jealousy, sharp and corrosive, crawls up his spine, and it spurs him on, guiding the tempo of his thrusts.
He wonders if heâs ever fucked you this fiercely before, with a passion that pulses from every part of him. Youâre given no space for thought, no moment to catch your breathâjust his unforgiving pace and the sounds spilling from your lips.
He has a way of breaking you down, turning you into a trembling, whimpering mess beneath him, and you surrender willingly, craving each second of it.
So fuckinâ tight. Can yâhear her? How badly she needs me?
Sex had never felt like this before. Heâd grown accustomed to quick, meaningless fucks in poorly lit bars, fleeting encounters that left him questioning if this was all there was. If this wasnât the best heâd ever know.Â
For a while, heâd tried to solve that emptiness, searching in nameless lovers and hollow hearts for the very thing he feared most: love.
And yet, he wanted it, yearned it, guarding his desire like a secret he barely admitted to himself. Until one day, you stumbled into his life, and all the strength he thought he had wasnât enough to push you away.
He presses deep into the back of your thighs, bringing your chests so close they're nearly brushing. Claiming your mouth in a maddening kiss, all teeth and tongue, leaving no space for softness. As he nibbles at your bottom lip, he feels you tighten around him, your cunt pulling him under, clouding his thoughts.
âClose?â he murmurs, hips snapping against you with an utterly obscene rhythm that drowns out the world, better than any song ever made. âSuch a good girl. Gonna come, sweetheart? Let me see how gorgeous you look when you fall apart, making a mess just for me.â
The constant, steady drag of his cock doesnât seem to get old for you. Heâs leaving his mark within you, inside you, carving a space for himself. His tip keeps hitting all the right spots, prompting you to tilt your pelvis to meet him halfway, telling him there, yes, there. More, please.
His hand slides down, rubbing your clit with his fingers. Doesnât need any extra help when doing so, your arousal providing all the slickness he needs. He feels like a runner on the final stretch, the finish line within reach, so close he can almost touch it, savoring the euphoria and bliss of crossing it.
The way you sing his name never loses its allure, despite all the times heâs heard it spill from your lips. Especially at this moment, with him buried deep inside you, every thrust a promise to make you feel good.
You shamelessly come while he keeps driving into you, vigorous and untamedâlike a caged animal unleashed, tasting freedom for the very first time.
Ankles digging into his lower back, a trail of persistent kisses along his beard. You want him inside, that much he can tell. Itâs not like he ever finishes anywhere else, but the reminder doesnât bother him. It only serves as a reassurance: that you still want this, want him. You havenât changed your mind.
He sinks his teeth into your neck the instant he feels his orgasm tearing through him, hips stilling and sagging as a string of grunts abandons his being, dampening your skin even more. He loves to fill you up, it consumes him entirely.
Such an intimate, visceral act, and then he gets to see his seed trickling down your thighs. He realizes that he doesnât need much to be happy.
You keep kissing him, his neck, his face. It may seem absurd to say that every kiss feels like the first, yet itâs true.
Even after heâs traced all the contours of your mouth and committed every detail of your body to memory, he canât help but feel that same thrill of excitement he experienced months ago when he dared to push beyond the boundaries he had set for himself.
Staring at each other, naked, all the love in the world seems to fill these four walls. The compassion and tenderness in your gaze remain unchanged. Youâre a dream come true.
It canât end like this. He canât allow you to drift back into sleep without saying what needs to be said. Something has to happen, something only he can conjure.
âI thinkâŠâ He hesitates. Starting with I think carries an air of uncertainty. âI donâtââ
âLogan,â you interrupt, your hand finding his. âI know.â
Yes, you do. You always seem to know everything, but that canât be enough. He canât lean on your unspoken understanding of his feelings.
âYou still deserve to hear it.â
âItâs not necessary.â
âIt is.â
More silence. The moon is the solitary spectator of his upcoming declaration.Â
âYou were right,â he begins, drawing your intertwined hands closer to his face, pressing a soft kiss on the back of yours. His voice drops to a murmur. Itâs not just his body that feels completely exposed anymore; something deeper within him stands bare. âIâm in love with you.â
You scrutinize him as if heâs revealing the secret to eternal life. Again, you kiss his cheek, cupping it gently with your palm.
âIt wonât get any better than this. There are no more layers to peel away, okay?â He offers explanations you never even asked for in the first place. âThis is what I am.â Much to his dismay, you overlook his choice of words: what instead of who.
He glances away, his gaze landing on the dog tags resting against your skin. The same old guilt threatens to engulf him, as it does each time without fail, and that seems to be your cue to lower yourself to his eye level, eyebrows raised.
âIâm not with you because Iâm waiting for you to change. I like you just as you are, Logan. And I want all of you, both the good and bad stuff.â A gentle smile breaks across your face as you stretch your arm to retrieve his glasses from the nightstand. Placing them on your nose, your eyes twinkle with contentment. âDo they look good on me?â
âYou donât need them yet.â
âThat doesnât mean I canât pull them off.â
âCome here,â he mutters, sighing when you nuzzle his chest, cradling your head between his hands. He ponders what to say, what to do next, but no clear idea sounds promising.
And so it gives you the chance to speak up: âYouâre not getting rid of me that easily.â
I hope I donât, he thinks to himself as he brushes your hair away from your face, fingers caressing your temples. I hope I never do.
