have been in a qijiu/qiyuan mood lately, and i was thinking about an au where shen yuan, upon transmigrating, actually loses his memories. he wakes up and has no idea who he is, where he is, who the man at his bedside is. not a clue. the only thing he has is his muscle memory, his sharp recognition senses (he's experiencing a lot of déjà-vu), and blurry fractions of memories that he can't quite make out.

thing is, the memories of both shen yuan and shen jiu aren't actually gone, they start to intermingle, to mix up, a little sister in princess pajamas beside an older brother wearing dirty rags, a bright screen that displays mountain peaks and glittering caves. he's kind and generous the way someone who has never had to worry about food or money is, but he gets vicious and defensive when someone gets too close. sometimes he says cruel things and doesn't even understand why himself.

neither identity fits anymore, both names right and wrong at the same time. it's just... shen qingqiu.

and while everyone else might adjust to this just fine, yue qingyuan does not. because that is shen jiu, but it isn't, but it has to be, but not always. he gets flashes of his childhood friend when shen qingqiu gets viciously defensive over nothing, when he scowls and scoffs and rolls his eyes when he thinks people can't see, but then he smiles, and laughs, and tilts his head in a way that is completely foreign. he likes beasts. shen jiu never liked beasts. but he loves tanghulu, like shen jiu. sweet sugary things. the first time xiao jiu cuddles up into his hug, he cries.

the way he sometimes clings to yue qingyuan when he has a bad day can't be him, but then he says "qi-ge" exactly like shen jiu would and damn near snarls at anyone who gets too close, and he's aggressively possessive the way he was when they were kids. but then he pulls away and apologizes, like shen jiu would never do.

and he never demands anything, scrubbed clean from roughness and filth and selfish want, will act perfect and smiling and pleasant, never burdensome. like he's completely forgotten where he came from, what he was. like the pampered nobleman's son who could afford to be kind. the only time his old self comes fully back up is when he feels threatened or scared or angry, like a trauma response that kicks in to protect himself. and then yue qingyuan starts to wonder if maybe it is. maybe the shen jiu he knows was only ever fear and self-preservation, and the one he is now is a shen jiu without the chains and shackles and scars.

yue qingyuan doesn't know if he's happy for him, if it's for better or for worse. he does know that he feels protective and responsible for this new version xiao jiu has become.

meanwhile shen qingqiu, even when he regains enough of his memories to realize he was once a different person, doesn't know who he is anymore. both, maybe. or neither. he feels bad for taking away yue qingyuan's friend, but in his heart he can't help but think qi-ge is his brother, and no one else's. when he manages the peak he feels like he's taking credit for another's accomplishments, but he remembers suffering for it, he remembers what it took to get there.

Yue Qingyuan loved his martial siblings, even if it was fairly chaotic all year round (half the time, it was because of a few certain individuals—)

His heart was very full of fondness whenever he sees young disciples playing around during their break time or when the older disciples come around to give the little ones advice.

He knows that outside of the mountain, there’s bound to be more horrors, but for the moment, he’s extremely relieved to see joyful children.

Admittedly, he’s more distant to them than he would have liked, being the sect leader and all, he has to focus on his responsibilities and reputation before being just Yue Qingyuan. Yue Qi.

These days, it’s more peaceful, he’s able to feel the weight in his chest lift slightly after Shen Yuan revealed who he truly was.

Yue Qingyuan was severely devastated, but… for the past few years, deep down, he had known that it wasn’t amnesia that plagued his martial brother. It was a sort of closure to know who what had happened to the real Shen Jiu instead of suffering in wait, wondering if Shen Qingqiu would ever remember their past.

After a few months, he’d created a makeshift grave for himself to visit.

Eventually, he realised that Shang Qinghua was probably a soul just like Shen Yuan, what with his informal (and shameless) behaviour and the foreign language he often spoke with Shen Yuan

Eventually, he found out that he was the one who had written his, and Xiao Jiu’s suffering.

He… well… he avoided the man for a long while.

Yue Qingyuan was not exactly the type to emotionally express his fury, not like Liu Qingge. In the end, he decided, it wasn’t fury he was feeling anyway.

Maybe he was far too tired to feel fury.

Looking back on it now, it was quite obvious, he was ashamed to admit that he should’ve probably have listened to Shen Jiu’s wariness towards the man

Though he supposed it went for the better since Shang Qinghua did help with the peak’s success in not being destroyed.

He was also little downtrodden at the realisation that he hadn’t known the small man that well at all.

Yue Qingyuan remembers one time, he was carrying a fevered Shang Qinghua to Qian Cao Peak. Shang Qinghua was quite delirious the , murmuring things he couldn’t understand. It was probably the world he came from, but Yue Qingyuan hadn’t known that at the time and rushed to the peak quickly and placing him gently on the bed.

Since Mu Qingfang hadn’t been there yet, his brotherly instincts took over and he takes care of his martial brother, trying to ease his furrowed brow and stop him from squirming. He brought him a cup of water and coaxed him to drink.

“Shh, Shang—shidi, it’s okay.” He hummed, remembering a tune from when he had sung to his Xiao Jiu a long long time ago.

It took a short time for the peak lord to settle, so he waited till Shang Qinghua’s eyes were fully closed to leave.

Surprisingly however, the man had caught onto Yue Qingyuan’s sleeve with wide and tearful eyes that made his heart sting.

His next words had made his stomach churn more.

“Baba… you told me you wouldn’t leave…” Shang Qinghua sniffled. It was obvious that he was still delirious from the fever and hadn’t recognised who he was talking to but… for a moment… Yue Qingyuan saw his Xiao Jiu. Yue Qi couldn’t muster up the courage to leave now.

Yue Qingyuan pursed his lips.

“W—Was I too much for you?”

Yue Qingyuan’s eyes widened before he finally rushed to his martial brother’s side, he couldn’t let Shang Qinghua think this way at all.

“No, of course not, just rest…Huá’er.” He brushed the loose strands behind his ear.

“You’re lying—!!” he cried, Yue Qingyuan only held him a little tighter, feeling terrified of what to say and not to say, “Huā’er won’t be annoying anymore, so please don’t leave, Baba!”

Yue Qingyuan could feel his heart shattering the more he listened.

Years later, Yue Qingyuan sits by his shidi’s table listening to Shang Qinghua admit to being this world’s creator.

One day, he asks mildly curiously. “Huá’er doesn’t have to answer, but this one was wondering. What was this lord’s old family like?”

Yue Qingyuan squeezed Shang Qinghua’s hand.

“Ahh don’t worry gege, it’s been so long, I’m over it now.”

YQY only smiles when he reminds him, “the family that you’ve found in this sect, in your husband’s winter palace, we will be here for you.”

He created Yue Qingyuan after his dad because he wishes that his dad actually had an excuse not to see him, he wishes that it wasn’t his fault that Shang Qinghua was left alone for so long, he wishes, but he knows that in real life, it’s not so simple. He knows that he’s unloved.

He sees his happy half siblings and he knows. He knows in every family reunion where he’s the odd one out, even when he tries to hangout with his half siblings. He knows it all.

So he pushes it all into Qi-ge and Xiao Jiu.

Eventually he realised that he bared a little too much of his soul to the world, so he scrapped their backstory.

I always always have a miscommunication trope (since most of the main ships suffer from it-)

Sun WuKong and Macaque have the most disgusting miscommunication.

Sun Wukong goes off to meet people and gets trapped. Dragged onto a journey and goes radio silent to his closest friends and Allies. Macaque is worried and they are constantly defending their home from demons and hunters.

Sun WuKong is having a not so bad time with the pilgrims. Exploring and fighting. He doesn’t think to check or even request a check up on his home and friends. He just assumes everything is fine.

Macaque cant get in contact with WuKong. He’s probably worried sick and thinks he’s suffering. Demon monkeys have been treated lowly, what if they’re hurting him??

Macaque didn’t know Sun Wukong wasn’t being hurt. Sun Wukong never knew the severity of what Macaque suffered. Even when he returned to find their home destroyed but slowly being built back up.

When they finally get the chance to talk it out, LBD has already been dealt with. Wukong has to corner Macaque into opening up. Their at a stalemate until a disgruntled MK and Mei yell out their respective insecurities. (SWKs: Need for affection and LEMs: Abandonment issues)

The initial conversation is extremely painful. So much that could have been avoided put out in the open. They can hardly look at one another at first. Macaque glaring at his feet while Wukong has found his tail rather interesting. The first sorry Macaque ever gets is so soft he thought he imagined it. Until he turns to see SWK staring at him. Genuine and heavy regret settled on his face. He meant it.

This fuckers getting teased by MK and Mei later.

Shen Jiu is a walking trope.

He never tells his feelings fully and just shuts down his irritants. People assumed he was a noble son. Arrogant and pompous. His skills were greatly affected by his scarred core and no one ever knew. The ones that did know never asked, knowing Shen Jiu wouldn’t open up about it.

Yue Qi assumed everything was okay, despite Shen Jiu almost killing him and having to kill his master for Yue Qi to live. He never addresses the Main issue between them. He gives a half assed apology that does nothing but upset Shen Jiu. Causing more of a rift between Shen Jiu and other disciples. They think he’s being rude to Yue Qi when that boy did nothing but corner and bother Shen Jiu without giving him a proper conversation.

It takes years for them to recognize that Shen Jiu was never the assumptions they had for him. It takes a near death experience and a distraught little girl to wrench the peak lords out of their own ass.

Ning Yingying wasn’t the only small child he had cared for. There was a child born from one of his old brothel friends. A kind young woman that was murdered by a jealous wife, sneaking in a demon. Her daughter had been hidden for safety, no one cared who the father was, they just wanted to keep her little flower safe. This baby had grown to be an exceptional child. She had been aspiring to join her uncle in his peak when she caught wind that the Peak lords were responsible for him being comatose after a botched mission.

The distraught cries of what they presumed was his daughter spurring on more nonsensical rumors that she quickly shut down.

“Baba is not my father you incompetent fools! He raised me after your lack luster protection KILLED my mother! Instead of gossiping like a gaggle of husbandless old crones do your JOBS! Baba has held in so much because of you repulsive quacks I’m amazed these peaks can even run properly!”

The little one airing them out was astounding to the disciples. Unsure whether to admire or admonish her. It wasn’t until Yue Qingyuan knelt down and bowed to her as an apology that the peak lords knew this was a serious offense.

“Don’t tell me your sorry apologies when you don’t even know what you did wrong. Baba loved you and stayed in this disgusting place for you, to make sure you were happy… I despise you for abusing my baba’s kindness. You and that muscle brained barbarian that harassed my mother when Baba came down to play music! You are all sick! You don’t deserve your titles! You don’t deserve my Baba!”

They would 100% only listen to the tears of a third party before they understand that Shen Jiu was never their enemy, until they made him one.

Sally Face:

Travis.

Lmao jk, he and Larry have probably the worst miscommunication. He genuinely can’t seem to understand Larry’s mind. Some jokes Larry makes have Travis in tears because he thinks it’s true.

Larry is a faithful man, but Travis thinks he’s not good enough and Larry has found someone else. Larry just thinks Travis is trying to impress him by acting more and more like the people he hangs out with. He doesn’t notice Travis breaking apart because this isn’t him. He’s not some edgy, punk rock person. He’s soft and still emotionally fragile.

Travis keeps trying until Sal physically separated them and pries the answer out of Travis. Earning a pained cry as Travis just begs Sal not to tell Larry. He just wants to keep his boyfriend. He doesn’t want to be abandoned because he isn’t good enough. Larry neglecting to talk with Travis lead up to this. Sal made sure Larry heard the entire conversation.

Larry would wast no time in consoling and correcting Travis. Explaining himself and even addressing his problem with communication. They were just two broken boys with a lot to work through.

Shen jiu? the Origianl Shen Qingqiu!?!?

They have a meeting with all the peaks, Shen Qingqiu can't go two feet before he feels the younger Shen Jiu grab his robes and yank so now he has to carry the little brat.

So Shen Qingqiu is guessing that maybe this Shen Jiu was plucked from his past and placed here?

Right until he see's Yua QingYaun and screeches in fury!

He wiggles out of Shen Qingqius grasp and points yelling "You two-faced liar!" He yells tears streaming down his face "Isn't it enough you left me not once but now twice!? Yue QingYaun I curse you! And you-" He turns to Shen Qingqiu aggressivly pointing at him making Luo Binghe's hackles rise.

"Stupid Imposter! Taking over my life- making a fool out of me and everything I've worked for that cultivation is mine I earned it myself and you just -take take take!" He yelled and Shen Qingqiu came to the realisation that not only did Shen jiu was not brought from the past- he knew everything that happened to him- he was consious of the whole thing!

"So why-" Shen Jiu stopped, an adults mind and memories trapped inside a child, unable to process and hide it- his sobs growling louder.

"Why do you like you more!? Why did no one care that I was gone- why did Yue QInghua not find me- do you all hate me that much?" Shen Jiu shut his eyes tight.

"Whats wrong with me- why do you do everything better? it's not fair!" Shen Jiu cried covering his face, and Shen Qingqiu was weak to tears.

He leaned close "Shizun." luo Binghe hissed, expecting this possibly demon child to stab his husband.

"Shh, nothings wrong with you." Shen Qingqiu hushed placing a hand on Shen Jiu's head and surprised when the kid grasped onto him.

Even if this was the orginal villain, he was still a child.

So the story goes as Shen Qingqiu taking responsibility of little Shen junior, Luo Binghe is against it, until later on he see's that Shen jiu only hates Shen yaun because people just like him, that Shen Jiu can't communicate well and Shen Qingqiu ends up explaining what he means, why is it that Shen Qingqiu just does it better?

Ends up with a rivalry with Luo Binghe but still calls him beast, both vier for Shen Qingqiu's attention, Shen Jiu gets the childhood he missed out on.

"Even thought I hate him- he stole me life, did it better just to mock me but..." Shen Jiu shook his head "he took my punishments too, he paid for crimes he didn't even commit." That was a fair enough price for stealing someones life, you steal their wrongs too. It wasn't fair.

"Even when you hurt him- his diciple he is still kind..." Shen Jiu doesn't understand, why he can't get along with anyone, why no one likes him not even the lil- well big Beast, but Shen Qingqiu cares for him...strangley enough.

"I'm sorry for stealing your life, believe me I didn't choose to-"

"Of course who would want to steal the villains body?" Shen jiu sneered then paused. He had to stop doing that.

"I'm not mad at you Shen Yaun," Shen Jiu sighed rolling his eyes as he bit into his apple. He heard Shen Qingqiu snicker and scowled, making the other laugh more.

"I'm mad that others said the complete change of personality was caused by amnesia...and they refused to tell you the truth because they liked you better this way...docile...naive...stupid." Shen Jiu scowled almost breaking his apple in two.

"That Yue Qinghua would abandon me once then pretend that he hadn't left me- betrayed me and acted all chummy to my face."

Shen Qingqiu hummed "You know the reason why he did that right?"

Shen jiu tossed his apple with a vicious throw "So what if his life was tied to his sword- he should've told me!"

Goddammit he's crying again!

He felt Shen Qingqiu hold him and felt even more resentment that he couldn't control his stupid emotions!

"You had to fight your way out of everything, but you don't have to do that anymore, you have me and Cang Qiong and all it's diciples as your family. You're not alone anymore."

"oi, little brat." Luo Binghe greeted with a smirk and Shen Jiu's eyebrow twitched it's been a few years but he still hated him.

"Beast." Shen Jiu greeted back with a smirk. Luo Binghe's smile faded "What are you doing?" He asked as Shen Jiu was practising sword formations. "Practising! I want to get stronger." Shen Jiu said, although it was a pain to start all over again- Shen Yaun should be in his place and earn that cultivation core of his that he's oh so proud of!

"Stronger? What for?"

Shen Jiu smirked glaring at Luo Binghe "Stronger so I can marry Shen Qingqiu."

Thanks to Shang Qinghua and Shen Qingqiu both were able to help Shen Jiu deal with his truama and better communicate with his pears, because they knew of his entire story, and he knew theres by sitting on the side lines was finally get therapy and deal with his problems.

Shen jiu just rubs people the wrong way without trying so it's worse when he's trying to be nice.

He hates Luo Binghe even more, for one instance when a group of demonic cultivators attacked their peak, Shen Qingqiu was in trouble and Shen Jiu had to find Luo Binghe and yelled at him to move his ass, and in the heat of battle yelled "You're the only one who actually saves him when he needs it!" He was mortified, admitting that.

Once the fight was over and they all shared a meal, and Luo Binghe teased him Shen Jiu hid his face with his cup "Quiet beast, I will admit to what I've seen during my...seclusion." They agreed to call his moments as a vouyer to his life being puppetiered by a better competant version they decided to call it 'seculsion' "That you were the only competant one who can actually save this idiot, I wouldn't trust anyone else with Shen Yaun."

It was his weird way of giving his blessing.

As the years went by, rumours went by that Shen Jiu was the son of Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu, both his elders teased him, but any response had Shen Jiu howling and promptly kicked those people bodily off the mountain.

"How can men become pregnant! And to add insult to injury that I'm related to that beast!" He howled, instead of being insulted Luo Binghe just laughed at his misery, pointing in Shen Jius direction until a ton of leaves began to attack him.

"Ow- Ow Xia-Jiu stop attacking your old man!" He laughed, enraging Shen jiu further.

But still now that he's older, almost Luo Binghe's age when he returned from the abyss he still feels awful- he won't even be in the same room as Yue Qingyaun.

"Why not forgive him, let it go- you've seen what happens when you hold onto your pride." Shen Qingqiu said and Shen jiu sneered "forgive? Be complacent of what he's done as if it never happened, he can forget all he wants and pretend it never happened but I'll never forgive. I will never accept that he abandonded me..." Shen jiu glanced down at his fan, the one Shen Yaun gave him his face twitched, no longer was he like the child who came crying on the mountain now it was hard to read his emotions.

"...I saw everything...from the moment of my Qi Deviation I saw what you did, how you treat the little beast, how you punished Liu Qingge diciples for bullying you precious binghe." Shen Qingqiu hid behind his fan and said snottily "I have no idea to what your insinuating."

"There is one thing I hate the most about that experience."

"Yeah yeah stealing your body and gaining all of your abilities without trying."

"No...When you took my punishments...all of the crimes of Qiu Haitang- dealing with Luo Binghe- if I wasn't such a villain you wouldn't have had to suffer."

Shen Qingqiu stared well to put it bluntly- that wasn't Shen Jiu's fault it was airplanes fault for writing him that way.

"I can never forgive Yua Qingyuan...but for your sake I'll tolerate him...and try to work well with others- I don't want to make the same mistakes again."

Even though he made that promise- he still rubbed people the wrong way, he even had comments that he was just Shen Qingqiu meaner younger brother and had a bad temperment, with someone like that he'll never be married- As if he would!

He tried to make polite with the other peak lords even though they knew who he was! It was insulting, but one glance at Shen Qingqiu and Luo Binghe he had to hold back and count to ten, at that didn't help the rumours that he was somehow their son as he only behaved and acted proper with the two around. And the fact that Shen Qingqiu- and Luo Binghe strangely, seem to spoil him.

when Shen Jiu had nightmares as a kid and it was Luo Binghe that found him hiding in the old bamboo shed tears down his face and even cried out for Luo Binghe not to hit him, another experience when one diciple misbihaved and he said mockingly that he would beaten with a whip, Shen Qingqiu sternly told him not to bully others with such lies. Shen Jiu confused only looks at Shen Qingqiu and asks ins't that what punishment was? Wasn't it normal?

Breaking Shen Qingqius heart in the process, it's one thing to see it the dream realm with meng mo but to see a kid SAY it is another thing entierly.

Luo Binghe found he was seeing himself in Shen jiu making it harder to hate him, and both told Shen Jiu that punishment didn't mean abuse, giving him the real childhood he needed.

But even though he was a young adult and stronger than he used to be by cultivating at the right time, he still felt out of place. The memories he had of being a slave- a number - of being the scum teacher that abused Luo Binghe out of stupid jelaousy- being given a second chance.

How could he be happy without this soul crushing guilt that made him feel as if any moment he was going to wake up as a ghost watching Shen Yaun and Luo Binghe's happy ending- or as a slab of meat in chains for the Luo Binghe who hated his master?

In all of Shen Jiu's life whenever he was happy it was bound for the other shoe to drop.

And of course, his gut instincts was right.

There was one altercation of the 'other' Luo Binge-ge who slipped into this world, the one Shen Qingqiu looked after, that imposter almost stole him before their Luo Bing-mei came back putting a stop to it, Shen Jiu was frozen solid, at the demon lord, unable to move or help Shen Qingqiu.

He remembered that Luo Bingh-ge seeing his ugh he'll just say it, parents he was envious of them that his Luo Bing-mei was loved and yet he was still so starved he even begged that Shizun to return with him.

But it wouldn't have worked, both have different scars and truamas, Shen Qingqiu wouldn't understand that Luo Bing-ge, wouldn't love him he would just be added to that monstrous garden he calls a harem then forgotten about.

So why?

Shen Jiu scowled raising his sword at Luo Bing-ge, why was he here!?

Luo Bing-ge looked amused, and Shen Jiu knew he was screwed- he was dead, by being a ghost of Shen Yuan he knew Luo Bing-ge was a protagonist with an indestuctable halo. Shen Jiu might die here-

"I heard rumours that my Shizun and other had a son, you're the spitting image." Shen Jiu scowled, at Luo Bing-ge considering look.

"No matter what, Cang Qong peak will always help you."

If Luo Bing-ge had any motives- Shen Yaun the idiot might do something reckless, he was always self-sacrificing it was bordering on stupid. Oh I'm just trying to save my own neck- oh wait I'll just leap in front of this person with a weapon masked in poison! God if Shen Yaun could read his adventures he would hissing and spitting on his character for being so finicky!

"I'm not their son!" Shen Jiu didn't stomp his feet leveling his sword at Luo Bing-ge.

"I'm the real Shen Qingqiu!"

Luo Bing-ge almost laughed "You think I'm that dumb?"

"Why do you think this world is so different?" Shen Jiu asked "Why would this Shizun treat his disciple in such a way and yet was so cruel to you, beast!"

Luo Bing-ge expression faltered "A imposter stole my body! And changed the course of fate! Once fate was satisfied they realised I hadn't payed my dues and gave me a body! You grievences is not with Shen Qingqiu- but with me!"

Luo Bing-ge smile faded once Shen jiu explained, his Shizun died, there was nothing left and the only time he responded was to the corpse of Qingyuan.

"Fine, since I can't take this Bing-mei's Shizun, you'll have to do." he said with a childish smile. And Shen Jiu tensed then sheathed his sword.

"Promise you won't bother Shen Qingqiu anymore."

Luo Bing-ge nodded with that stupid smile. "Of Course."

Shen Jiu took a breath then sheathed his sword, he took one last glance at his peak, it was all too good to be true, but this Luo Bing-ge would never stop, he owed this to Shen yaun who took too much of his burden.

His vision darkened as Luo Bing-ge grabbed him and dragged him back to his realm....

OK SO! Linked Souls! Sickly!Shen Yuan because im projecting a little bit, hes also around 4 years younger than Shen Jiu. When Shen Jiu turns four years old, he starts having hazy dreams of a soft, warm bed, a full stomach, but constant fevers and aches. He feels bitter - not even his dreams let him really enjoy anything. Its quiet and mostly formless until Shen Yuan learns to talk - they gain the ability to talk to eachother, like riding passenger in a car, able to talk and watch but not interact. Shen Jiu learns to read better than any of the other slaves, and teaches Yue Qi everything he learns.

 He tells Yue Qi about Shen Yuan, and Yue Qi believes him because he’d always believe his Xiao Jiu. Shen Yuan likes his Qi-ge a lot, and likes him even more when he sneaks Shen Jiu sweets ‘for a-yuan to taste’

When Shen Jiu turns 11, he’s taken by the Qius. He feels scared and guilty, because Shen Yuan will feel this too, no matter that the little brat didn’t deserve it. He was still too soft and naive, this might break him. He begs Shen Yuan to find a way to leave, but he refuses to leave his ‘big brother’ all alone.

3 years pass, Yue Qi never comes back. Shen Yuan gets sicker and sicker, and Shen Jiu fears that one of them will die before the year’s end - either from sickness or Qiu Jianluo. Qiu Jianluo tries to touch Shen Jiu one night and he snaps, killing the man and everyone in his way on the path out. He might have grit his teeth and borne it if he was alone, but he’s not letting Shen Yuan get hurt like that.  

Shen Jiu doesn’t go with Wu Yanzi after Shen Yuan begs him not to - the man is scum, and while Shen Jiu might be scum himself, Shen Yuan is soft and sweet, he doesn’t deserve to see a man so vile. Cultivating from manuals he steals from people who are likely scammers, he ends up at the immortal alliance conferance. Shen Yuan convinces him to enter - hes too tricky to get himself killed by any of the monsters, and placing anywhere better than the last dregs will be impressive for a 15 year old rouge cultivator.

Wu Yanzi is back! And hes trying to murder Yue Qi, who caught sight of Shen Jiu and froze like a deer in the headlights. Shen Jiu runs him through with a sword he stole from some asshole a few months back and then cries all over Yue Qi’s robes, and then has a very repressed panic attack about getting blood and tears on robes that cost more than his life. 

Yue Qi is also crying! Shen Yuan has no control over Shen Jiu’s eyes but by the way he’s babbling he’s probably also crying! Everyone is crying! 

Yue Qi brings Shen Jiu before his master a bit like a cat presenting a dead bird and Shen Jiu wants to die in a hole a little bit because he’s scruffy and bloody and everyone around him look like peerless immortals. He covers this up by acting as much like a pampered young lord as humanly possible. Shen Yuan is cheering him on internally. 

Shen Jiu is snapped up the the Qing Jing peak master because he’s obnoxiously intelligent and knows a truely frightening amount of characters and some really impressive maths, esspecially considering his lack of formal education (Shen Yuan, internally “Yes Jiu-ge I know, I’m amazing and the light of your life and you’re so grateful to watch my miserable homeschooling lessons”)

Yue Qi explains nothing about why he didn’t come back because! Thats just what the man is like. Shen Jiu is less furious about it and more depressed because having a perminant Shen Yuan in your head helps you develop slightly less violent coping mechanisms. Plus, Shen Yuan can’t hold a grudge to save his life and Shen Jiu uses the fact Shen Yuan missed him as a reason to visit. 

Yue Qi sticks his foot in his mouth a little less. 

Liu Qingge hates Shen Jiu On Sight as usual, and is still convinced hes a murderous little noble snake. Shen Yuan is furious, and Shen Jiu has to fight the urge to laugh at the creative streams of insults he gets running. 

Shen Yuan gets well enough to attend high school in person. He doesn’t really make any friends, but hes not lonely considering the other Shen who, while not there constantly, is basically always there by the time his first lessons start. The running commentry makes it less dull anyway. 

He graduates, applies to university. Shen Jiu becomes head disiple. Shen Yuan finishes his first year of a teaching degree before his illness relapses hard. He gets through another year of part time study before he dies. 

Something in Shen Jiu, now Shen Qingqiu, Peak Lord of Qing Jing, dies with him. His students liken him to a ghost, dressed in mourning white, rising late and sleeping early, but often seen wandering the peak in the dead of night. Yue Qingyuan visits often, but Shen Qingqiu says nothing. 

Liu Qingge, angry at what he assumes is a fit of drama crashes onto the peak in a self rightious rage, challenging Shen Qingqiu to a duel. Thats the only time he ever loses a duel to him. The Yue Qingyuan has to pull them apart, Shen Qingqiu still snarling with rage. 

The news that he deviates that night shocks no one. Yue Qingyuan is frigid with Liu Qingge, and it unnerves the other peak lords. 

Shen Qingqiu has barely recovered from one of the worst Qi deviations he’s ever had when a disiple all but crashes through his door, scared shitless of the half dead looking man who stumbled through the peak’s barriers like so much air. 

Shen Qingqiu doesnt dare hope - Shen Yuan is dead, and a world away at that - but wouldn’t his soul be allowed to pass through the barrier? Shen Qingqiu had never had a problem when they shared bodies.

The man (barely a man, he would be 21 if he hadn’t been dead for 3 months) looks truly awful, feverish and flushed, but Shen Qingqiu know’s that face better than he know’s his own.

Hi again! You just activated my brain rot, I’m literally obsessed with scum villain right now lol. It’s so hard to narrow it down to three characters so here’s my favorite six instead ☺️

6. Gongyi Xiao (my boy!!! he has so little screen time but for the time that he did show up, i was rooting for sqq to run away with him lol)

5. Sha Hualing (my favorite evil henchman omg. i love her character design so much. she may not have a lot to do but she’s beautiful and i adore her)

4. Liu Mingyan (she is soooo pretty. every time she’s on screen i’m like wow airplane really knew what he was doing when he created her. plus her hobby is hilarious! she’s living her best life and earning that cash money <3)

3. Liu Qingge (king of comedy over here! he’s such a good guy and super loyal and the powerful war lord of bai zhan but i think the guy’s so hilarious, too! i love his intense hatred of lbh lol. when asked where lbh is, without even hesitating lgq’s like “he’s dead” and then he gets yelled at by nyy and qi qingqi 🤣)

2. Ning Yingying (best girl!!! i literally love her! i know she started out as just a silly girl who’s always accidentally making trouble for those around her and destined to be lbh’s first wife, but i love how she grows out of that shadow and every time she stomps on mf’s foot or gets into a fight for shizun or talks back to lqg and lbh i’m so proud of her!)

1. Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu (yes i’m cheating. but i love these codependent losers. i’m always switching between who’s my favorite character so i’m going to say both of them are. they are a set do not separate ❤️)

Unlike mdzs (which I’ve read 3 times and know scenes by heart) I’ve only read svsss once. I binge read it while the donghua was still airing and I’m slowly re-reading it right now. So it took a second for me to rank my favorite scenes. There were so many I wanted to include!! Like the scene where shen qingqiu kept trying to cover luo binghe with blankets but the man refused to stay hidden. Or the bing-ge vs bing-mei extra. Or the scene where luo binghe “only has enough money for two rooms” and shen qingqiu takes one room for himself and makes lbh share with liu qingge. But anyway, here’s my favorites.

5. The one where Shen Qingqiu gives his life for Luo Binghe after nearly qi deviating (Chapter 43). It took me a long time to root for bingqiu. But after the abyss, and seeing how sqq mourned for lbh, I was slowly starting to see these two in a different light. And when sqq gives his life to save lbh’s, I cried like a baby. That scene of lbh on the ground, surrounded by enemies, cradling his dead shizun in his arms as he cries and begs for forgiveness broke me. I was like that’s it! I don’t care if they’re “not healthy for each other,” I want them to be together! And then I was fully rooting for these two.

4. The scene where Yue Qingyuan reveals his backstory after he nearly dies on Maigu Ridge. This scene is very small but I had to include it. I’m a big fan of tragic irony, so when yqy reveals to sqq that the reason he doesn’t draw his sword is because it draws from his lifespan and it caused him to qi deviate all those years ago and this was the reason he was late to saving him, I was so heartbroken. Because here yqy is, learning the hard way that his impatience was a bad thing, and he’s finally telling his xiao jiu the truth but he is too late and his xiao jiu is gone. There is only sqq. We see this scene from sqq’s point of view and we get to hear the system’s hollow words ring out, congratulating him on his achievements, as a man is dying in his arms. The system’s presence alone reminds us that he is not xiao jiu. I felt so bad for yqy and that he never got closure with xiao jiu and because of that dreaded system, he will never learn that his xiao jiu is actually gone 🥺💔

3. The scene when Luo Binghe proposed to Shen Qingqiu. I have never been more fond of lbh than in this scene where he’s thinking about proposing to sqq and he becomes a total klutz! Spacing out in the middle of a conversation, tripping over thresholds, stuttering over his words. The way he trips and when sqq goes over to help him, he grabs his hand and asks if he’ll marry him. “Will you become family with me?” 😭❤️❤️❤️

2. The scene that takes place after Shen Qingqiu is tortured by the original LBH and looks into the original SQQ’s memories. The quiet moment he shares with Luo Binghe in the bamboo house. This was such a fascinating scene to me. Even though sqq refuses to think about how he feels for lbh, I think this was a moment he realized that he is not as indifferent to lbh as he says he is. He begs the original lbh not to stop hurting him, but to not hurt him while wearing that face. He sees the original sqq make lbh cry and even though it’s just a memory that he cannot touch, sqq tries to wipe lbh’s tears, hold him close, and tell him that he will never hurt him. It was clear as daylight to me that no matter what sqq said he loves lbh so much. And when he wakes up from such horrid visions and the real lbh asks him if he missed him, he nods his head. And lbh is so overwhelmed and kisses his eyelids and “your eyelashes are so long” and “you are the roundworm in my stomach” I literally CANNOT with this scene. How my dumb sqq didn’t realize he was in love astounds me.

1. The scene where Luo Binghe and Shen Qingqiu talk on Maigu Ridge and afterward. These two… are so bad at talking to each other. And I completely get it! Like, the system’s awful rules aside (preventing sqq from telling lbh why he hurt him in the abyss), there’s this mental image they have of each other that they can’t seem to get rid of. Sqq denying his own feelings and seeing lbh as either the heterosexual protagonist or his disciple who he will make decisions for. Lbh charging forward with his feelings and seeing sqq as both the cold, stoic peak lord he’s afraid of and the one person he loves who showed him kindness. There’s this disconnect. And shortly before the disaster on Maigu Ridge, sqq realizes that things would never have gotten so out of hand if he had just listened to lbh and talked to him. So once these two reach their literal worst point and sqq brings lbh’s consciousness back, they finally talk to each other as the world is collapsing around them. Sqq even returns the jade necklace he had kept hidden from lbh all those years ago. And when sqq is about to sacrifice himself (again) to save the world from xin mo’s destruction, he tries to get lbh to leave so that only one of them has to die. And that’s the thing: It is a good thing, sacrificing yourself so that the one that you love will live. It would’ve been healthier if lbh weren’t so codependent on sqq that he cannot live without him. But these two are always pushing aside each other’s wishes, not listening to what the other one wants. What lbh wants is to stay with sqq. And this time, sqq listens to lbh’s wishes and holds him tight. Afterward, when sqq wakes up in his home, he immediately asks about lbh and searches for him, wanting to follow him. He’s finally letting go of fear and chasing after what he wants, instead of what he feels he needs to do. And idk man. There’s something so nice about how they choose to stay by each other, even though they’ve gone through so much.

18. Do any of your stories have alternative versions? (plotlines that you abandoned, AUs of your own work, different characterisations?) Tell us about them.

SO. This feels a little like cheating, because it’s not all necessarily my work, but first, The Scum Villain’s Self-Saving System is prodding me in the au place real good, but then, feynite’s entire svsss everything got me so much worse, especially I Wish You Were My Husband and feynite’s aus and side stories for that verse. My biggest priorities have been 1) bingliushen, and 2) But Shen Jiu Tho, and @applechime and I cannot stop riffing on this silly setting. We have about four or five distinct aus of our own at this point, and it Just Keeps Happening. I’m working on writing two of these aus, but these things keep branching, especially since svsss has alternate universe crossover events written right into the original plot, and I’ll never be able to write everything

(i can cross over diet bingge with bingmei and bingge both, if i’m careful with my timing, but what about a timeline where our binghe is able to save bingge’s sha yuan and gege, and what if there’s a timeline where our binghe figures out that in bingmei’s universe, shizun was weird and nice because a-yuan was in shizun’s body, and oh god if i want to write babies happening at what point in the timeline does that go, and--) (it’s a logistical nightmare, but so FUN)

3. What is that one scene that you’ve always wanted to write but can’t be arsed to write all of the set-up and context it would need? (consider this permission to write it and/or share it anyway)

Hoo boy. So. Another au. Would be svsss proper, a universe where the Liu siblings were flipped around. Instead of Bai Zhan Peak Lord Liu Qingge, we’ve got Bai Zhan Peak Lord Liu Mingyan. And I love Liu Qingge to pieces, but he did not put any skill points into social graces, and Shen Jiu is a touchy, brittle boy, and finds men lowkey triggering to begin with, and what if instead of becoming vicious enemies with Liu Qingge, he was able to become vague frenemies with Peak Lord Liu Mingyan instead. What if she was able to fill the [big sister figure] space in his life the way Qiu Haitang used to do.

And what I would really, really, really love to do. It would take so much time and work and development, and maybe some alcohol as well, because it’s not like Shen Jiu is very interested in opening himself up to anyone to begin with. But I’d love to get a scene that really captures the same energy as Wei Wuxian and Jiang Yanli after Jiang Cheng’s core gets destroyed, where he curls up in her lap and cries, but.... with Shen Jiu flavor, which makes it so much harder to execute.

It would be so, so hard wrangling things around to a point where him opening up in that way felt at all plausible, but just imagine!!! I desperately want Shen Jiu to find security and/or friendship, and outside of somehow fixing things with Yue Qingyuan (which is also good, but IWYWMH is a great example of how sour things can go if his only person is yue qingyuan), it’s kind of depressing to realize that this is probably the easiest shortcut from Shen Jiu to happiness, considering how much work it would still need XD Alternately, I would also be into a qi deviation a la Luo Binghe or Hua Cheng that left Shen Jiu child sized, but that flavor of vulnerability would also be hard and also wouldn’t be the same

(and again, with branching aus, two possible timelines: imagine a universe where non-transmigrator-sqq is able to save liu mingyan from qi deviation in lingxi cave, and doesn’t panic so badly he accidentally fucks it up and kills her. and then, imagine a universe where he does panic and fuck up... and kills his only friend, and imagine the nasty gossip afterwards about how shen qingqiu is such a deceitful scumbag, I mean, look at how often he visits brothels and look at how beautiful liu mingyan was, i bet he made an advance down her in the caves and she turned him down, and that’s why he killed her)
