So when I encountered Dayle Ann Dodd's "The Kettles Get New Clothes" (2002), I got super excited. Not only is it a genuinely amusing narrative, it teaches...patterns! Erin Moriarty

Erin Moriarty, Loyola University Chicago’s Associate Vice President and Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, has been working in higher education for over 20 years. Previously, she worked as Loyola University’s Associate Director from 2001 to 2013 and as the Assistant Director of Alumni Relations at Creighton University from 1999 to 2001. Erin is immensely passionate about furthering student development. She believes every student has a niche, and as the Dean of Undergraduate Admissions, she works hard to help them find theirs. Erin originally graduated from Creighton University with a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science. She then went on to receive a Masters in Global Strategic Communication and Business Administration from Loyola. She is a strong believer in the Jesuit institution and works hard every day to create a diverse community seeking God in all things and to expand knowledge in the service of humanity. As a cancer survivor, Erin is passionate about supporting organizations that fight against the disease. As a participant in Pedal the Cause, Erin biked to raise awareness and help fund cancer research. After work, Erin can often be found enjoying the sights and sounds of the city of Chicago. She enjoys biking along the shores of Lake Michigan, visiting local museums, attending concerts, hiking or skiing nearby, and spending time with family and friends.

Luckily Pauls’ entire head is submerged in the icebox asJohn’s lewd one-liner drops like a pin in a silent room.  He feels the heat return to his cheeks as hisflustered mind derails into all of its various implications.  Truth be told, he doesn’t have terribly muchto show for their hiatus- a rework of an older song, one he intends to put morepercussion to, thought he’d be hard pressed to admit that he finds it difficultto write in the other’s absence, even if they don’t write together anymore.  Somethingabout John’s presence still fuels him, despite the fierce competition thatbubbles up between them- which is why their partnership has devolved into writingin the same room rather than working on the same composition.  He glances at  Lennon, who is now idling at his side, with anage-old expression of exasperation and bewitchment, his doe eyes striking withtheir countering, cunning, companions, and suddenly their proximity becomesdizzying when he gets a whiff of him. There’s something exotic there, a beguiling musk of heat and sand anddry air, something that makes him feel anemic next to him.  He doesn’t dare tell John how much it suitshim; it’s almost criminal what a little Vitamin D will do.

               “We’llshow ‘em at th’same time,” he eventually tuts dismissively, wagging his head abit, discretely collecting an ice cube and extending a bold wrist forward todeposit it beneath the collar of John’s shirt.

Suddenly horrifically insecureabout how the other Beatle will take the impromptu tactical assault, he swiftlyshifts gears and closes the ice box, allowing Lennon a second or two to sufferin private as he saunters towards the stove range, obediently filling up thekettle.  Surely it was benign enough- butwas it some sort of passive aggressive move to take John down a few notches andsee him squirm?  As exhilarating as the unsolicited visit is, part of it almost feels like a power play- - but he quicklyreasons with himself that John’s come home,and his heart is swelling at the thought that his place was likely the firstplace he’s thought of.  The prospect of itcreates a swarm in the pit of his belly. He puts the burner on and turns towardsthe wriggling pup at their feet, avoiding his companion’s gaze and stifling apeal of nervous laughter as he beams at Martha who’s bearing all her teeth andtongue at them from under her fringe.  Hefeels himself melting towards the floor and he scoops her writhing little bodybetween his legs, capturing her in a full embrace, eventually peering back upat John with that cloying, desperate, sort of new-mum look.

               “Isn’tshe darling?! Oh, look, Jawn- oooooh,you’re cute, dear, I know,” McCartney coos, tilting his chin up as she paws athis chest and licks at his jaw, “oooo kisses, kisses”.

It’s a good thing Paul scrambles away when he does— they definitely need the space. Hovering over the younger lad, peering into the ice box, Lennon almost feels as if he’s under stage lights. His mind wanders a similar, more detailed route to the bassist’s unknowingly, their topic of conversation lost to him now as his eyes wander over broad shoulders. He’s always thinking about sex, isn’t he? The tension is so palpable, so thick one would have to go at it with a saw rather than a knife, but McCartney manages with an ice cube, a move that does nothing but confirm to the guitarist that they’re reading each others’ minds. Without so much as a word between them, he’s received the message loud and clear: Down boy.         ”Oh, ‘ey,” He rumbles in surprise, voice sitting deep in his chest as it sometimes does as John contorts to keep the cube from touching his skin on its descent. He turns his back on the other Beatle then, shoulders hunched, the ice now nestled comfortably between his waistband and his abdomen. Though he’ll admit the sensation is a welcome reprieve from the blazing sun he’d felt standing beside his companion, the stark difference in temperature causes the cube to sweat profusely, the water darkening his shirt as it soaks through the fabric. Rather than yank his shirt from the confines of his trousers and ruin the even tuck he has going on, Lennon unbuttons the button that hovers just above his waistband and plucks the offending cube out. He chucks it over his shoulder in a tiny act of rebellion and hopes it makes contact with Paul in some form or fashion, but the clatter behind him afterwards is more consistent with the wood of his mate’s cupboards. The elder lad’s aquiline nose wrinkles at this, and even further at the water spot left behind at the bottom of his shirt. It’s almost undetectable due to the rather psychedelic nature of the pattern, but he knows it’s there and that’s all that matters. When he turns back, still doing up his button, John looks up to find that he doesn’t have to raise his gaze too high to find his mate as McCartney has sunken to the floor. It takes him a moment to register just what exactly is going on— why Paul’s beaming at him the way he is, until he notices the pup practically doing the twist underneath him. Truth be told, they’re quite a cute pair, the two of them. With the bassist’s white top and dark mop, they’re in the same color palette, practically twins as some dogs and their owners tend to become. It’s pleasing to his artist’s eye to see, and even more exciting to share the room as it dawns on him that he’s never seen his mate gush in this way. John can’t help but titter a little at the unexpectedness of it all, unabashedly gawking at the man and his dog in something just short of awe. He can feel his heart pulling toward the overwhelming affection that’s radiating off of McCartney, longing to be a part of it, but he holds himself back, crossing his arms comfortably and leaning against the refrigerator instead.        ”Always knew ye’d make a good moth’r,” He grins, teasing. “Wots ‘er name, then?”
