By the time the sun had fully risen, Josephine and Zelda were in Violette’s new room helping her to unpack all of her toys and dresses. The room was already outfitted with a small bed, dresser, and a dollhouse that was just like the one Violette had in New Orleans.

They are tinkerers who want to invent all sorts of bizarre technology for the people of Wonderland

Design notes: Open wounds are healed and prosthetics are more practical

Being kicked out of the domain once named after him, The Hatter bitterly took over The Crockery. The two domain’s heavy connections (they are basically one domain to some) means Alice often has to step in to mitigate the fights between him and Dormouse and March Hare. The Crockery itself has a tiny population and little going on, so Hatter can spend most of his time trying to one-up the rodents inventions

Design notes: Combination of his original design and the Asylum concept design. Sort of like his old self, but not completely. Holding a mini-eyepot, one of his inventions

The Red Queen is a reflection of Lizzie. A foil to her, if she was alive. Regardless, Alice can’t let go of the connection, which led her to be more forgiving of the Queen’s past actions than others. Really, she just wanted to control Wonderland in a desperate attempt to save it, but with a disastrous amount of force. As such, she has been reinstated as ruler of the Queensland, but she is micromanaged the most out of all of them for the people’s wellbeing

Design notes: Really don’t like the Madness Returns design so its essentially been retconned (it doesn’t really make sense for her to look like young Alice if she’s represents Lizzie, and also its kinda lame). Based on Asylum concept art, her appearance is more “normal” than in the first game (not having horns, having hair, etc) but still monstrous

He originally became conductor of the Looking-Glass Line after the corruption era ended, but was later instated as ruler of the Deep Blue Sea after the Carpenter was deemed unfit to rule. Like the Crockery, the population is small and almost exclusive to Barrelbottom, so his responsibilities are more on the level of a mayor, hence his garb

Design notes: I put the mayor hat and sash on him because I thought it was a fun idea lol

Not allowed to rule the sea, Carpenter continued running the Dreary Lane Theatre, whose productions have vastly improved in quality. Citizens can enter the building confident in their safety with the Walrus’ head mounted above the door

Design notes: Really liked how his design looked in the theatricals cutscenes, has a more dramatic feel than his regular 3D model

Abandoned a life of royalty to run the largest Snout farm in Wonderland. Still just as self-absorbed as ever

Design notes: Dress is a combination of her actual in-game outfit and typical farmer garb from the 1800s

Back from the dead, and not in the form of a ship. He is the ruler of the Vale of Tears, and is widely recognized as a hero for his battle against the Jabberwock in the war

THE JOURNEY CONTINUES UNDER THE CUT

She slept better than she had in at least a week. Jabba’s old slave quarters, once an austere room with no ‘fresher and two rows of bunk beds stacked three high, was now a comfortable apartment with a large futon. It was still a windowless room, but that made sleeping through eight hours of daylight easier. She didn’t relish traveling through the night on supply runs to and from Mos Espa, but it made for a faster, more efficient trip if she avoided the heat of Tatooine’s twin suns.

When she awoke the suns were low in the sky. She washed her face in the room’s newly installed wash basin and stretched out her sore muscles. There would be other courier jobs - she could saddle up her dewback and head into town to see which merchants needed supplies couriered overnight from Mos Eisley or maybe even somewhere closer, like the moisture farms or Mos Pelgo.

The man in black, as stern and imposing as he’s been that morning, approached her as she filled her water skin from the spigot in the sallyport. He held out a small sack and fished a stack credits from inside of his cowled cloak.

“Go to Anchorhead and bring back the palace droids Honwoo reprogrammed. Take two days if you need to - here’s enough credits for a stay at the Sidi Driss Inn, and there’s more when you return.”

She took the sack and the credits with a bewildered expression on her face. Sidi Driss Inn is a luxury hotel, she thought. Did the new daimyo really intend to pay for her to spend the day sleeping at a resort?

The man, a lieutenant of the daimyo, she supposed, called over his shoulder to her as he walked away.

“Get your water from the kitchen from now on. That spigot is rusty and that old tank needs cleaning.”

The burlap sack contained a rather expensive assortment of dried meats, cheeses, pastries, and even fresh fruits. She hadn’t had fresh fruit in years - this daimyo was lightyears more generous than the previous two. She wondered if he was struggling to find good help, but his gravely voiced deputy seemed like he ran a tight ship. Maybe the new daimyo was a puffer pig who needed to surround himself with strength and loyalty. That would explain the uncommon generosity.

She set off with the twilight towards Anchorhead on her dewback, who was fresh and energetic from a day of sound sleep and a belly full of rich kitchen scraps. The sky was clear and the stars were bright. The moonlight reflected pale blue off of the sand of the Dune Sea. She sampled each of the decadent foods in the burlap sack and shared them with her dewback when they stopped to rest at the halfway point between Mos Espa and Anchorhead. If he intended to outfit all of his contractors so generously, she would be silly not to work exclusively for the daimyo.

She arrived in Anchorhead as the first sun crested the horizon, before the merchants and shopkeepers opened for the day. She decided to see if a room at the Sidi Driss would even be available at this time of day. A few hours of sleep in a luxurious room before businesses opened for the day was more than she could hope for, but she felt the optimism of one who has been blessed by an unseen benefactor.

“Checking in?” asked a chipper desk attendant.

“I don’t have a reservation,” she replied, tentatively.

“You came in on a dewback, did you not? We have a reservation for you secured by the Daimyo of Mos Espa.”

Wonders never ceased.

A valet took her dewback to the stable to be hosed off and fed while she was shown to a corner room on the hotel’s top floor. It was opulent - a large bed, a ‘fresher stocked with expensive soaps and oils, and a balcony overlooking all of Anchorhead. She had been given plenty of credits for the room, so she supposed that the daimyo intended for her to spend them all on the sumptuous accommodations. She indulged long in a bath in the wide round tub before wrapping herself on a fluffy robe to settle in for a nap.

She awoke a few hours later to a note slipped under the door of her room.

Honwoo will have your cargo ready at sunset. The Daimyo of Mos Espa has opened a tab for your expenses and wishes for you to take yourself shopping at the hotel boutique at your convenience.

Surely, the Daimyo of Mos Espa had lost his mind. Had she somehow been mistaken for someone else? A dignitary or prominent merchant or guild member? She felt like an imposter, then reread the letter and realized that it addressed her by name. She knew she was a reliable courier, but were reliable couriers so hard to find in Mos Espa that they needed to be plied with luxury accommodations and shopping sprees?

She thought it best to follow the daimyo’s instructions. He was paying her way, so she may as well do as she’d been told and enjoy herself. She ordered a breakfast of colo claw fish and a fruit platter with a side of blue milk. It was more food than she’d eaten at a single meal in years and the experience of being well and truly full was delightful.

When she finally made her way down to the hotel lobby, a concierge met her at the base of the stairs.

“I’m to escort you to the boutique.”

This was getting weird. She briefly considered if she should continue going along with what felt like some kind of dream, but surely the daimyo must have his reasons for treating her to so much finery. The boutique was small and the clothing was perhaps impractical for someone who spent much of her time on a dewback crossing the desert, but she could not remember the last time she’s bought herself anything new and she could not resist the opportunity. The concierge even managed to convince her to pick out a dress with all of the requisite accessories - although what occasion she’d have to wear such an ensemble, she could not fathom.

Feeling overwhelmed, she returned with her new wardrobe to her room to decompress from experience and get a few more hours of sleep. She dreamed of Boba Fett as she remembered him from years ago - a figure in green armor and a distinct helmet - wielding a beskar ax to cleave the chains that bound her to Jabba The Hutt. But Boba Fett was dead and she awoke with a sense of loss that she hadn’t known she could feel for a stranger.

The valet brought her freshly bathed and well fed dewback to her and helped her load him up with her expensive new clothes. The suns were just beginning to set, which meant that the cargo she was hired to transport would be ready for pickup at Honwoo’s Repair Shop. She mounted her dewback and tipped the valet generously before making her way through town.

Honwoo and his human droid technician, Mathus, met her at the shop’s bay doors with crated droids ready to be loaded up for transport. She dismounted and introduced herself as labor droids began loaded and strapping crates to her dewback. Mathus handed her a data pad with a packing list, and she gave it a cursory read through before signing and handing it back to him.

“You should be all set in a few minutes. Do you need to fill a water skin before you head out?”

“Sure,” she replied, gratefully. He walked her to the shop’s sink and as she filled her water skin, the two made casual conversation. Mathus enjoyed his job as a technician and liked working for Honwoo, an honest and agreeable Rodian.

also star wars original trilogy has some of the best set/costume/prosthetic/puppet design of all sci fi. extremely immersive worldbuilding that no star wars since has been able to capture. i feel like a lot of sci fi reeeeally struggles with the type of environments star wars thrives most in, which is like. normal people settings. rural farming towns. random ass bars. etc. as opposed to super epic or grandiose or technologically impressive places. the people of the original trilogy seem very integrated with the technology they use. 10/10

if ive said it once ive said it a million times i love when star trek characters stare directly into the camera and say shit like if ur racist ur not only evil but also stupid and embarrassing urself. the extremely earnest bleeding heart social justice warrior snowflake nature of star trek is so crucial 2 its nature and i love it and its great. i love the optimism but also thoughtfulness and caution of star trek. there’s a lot of work being put into conceptualizing a future earth society that has vastly improved since our time, but also a lot of discussion of ways that society might be limited or its failures and downsides. no matter how fanciful or dreamlike a piece of tech is they almost always consider the kinds of new problems it could cause (take the elevator and come out two people etc etc)

as for TOS i love the campiness the experimentality and the creativity. yes there are many episodes of TOS that are batshit insane and notttt in a very good way. but thats because almost no two episodes of the show are the same/similar. dozens of sci fi writers contributed to this show that was, timeline wise, still pretty early on in the existence of our modern definition of sci fi. they were throwing shit at the wall and seeing what stuck and thats why it ended up creating so many foundational sci fi concepts!! and also. wheeeee shapes and colors. they had a ton of plywood some felt an eyebrow pencil and a dog in a hat. and a dream. and it looks so beautiful and silly. nothing will ever top the TOS mini golf course ass planets

as for TNG i do genuinely like that every episode has like 17 simultaneous plots. they never ever take the easy way out with TNG plots and most episodes end in a way u could never have predicted from the first 15 minutes. as a show its very averse to simple solutions and easy answers and i like that the characters are frequently making decisions that are difficult-to-impossible. but mostly i like all the silly outfits they put them in. now see them as detectives now see them as cowboys now see them in macbeth. a dozen 45 year olds that all value amateur improv more than their own lives. now see them play poker. now see them ride horses. these people genuinely work like 3 hours a day and spend the rest doing fuck all i love it. re: a society that has vastly improved since our time. we should all be doing tons of improv basically

He wasn’t the best at first but over time he got used to you and your routine, eventually

He buys games for you. Whatever you want, he shells the robobucks for. He cannot resist you asking. All it takes is a “pweeeeaaaase?” with those big eyes and he throws his wallet at the GameStop employee

He has a Minecraft server that the two of you play on. He is often coming to your rescue when you get caught in a bad situation. It is usually ‘I have gotten myself stuck in a hole’ or ‘There is a creeper near our house’. He lets you build all the pretty builds while he makes farms for materials.

While he does buy you regular games and kids’ games, if he’s working he’ll usually hand you the tablet loaded with baby games, and if the sound’s going on with speakers he can’t focus well. So he buys you cute and comfy headphones to wear while you use the tablet.

Calls you baby bot. He did not call you this in front of the other Scrybes for a very long time because he was embarrassed, until one day you started crying because he hadn’t called you baby bot in a long time and you’d thought you did something wrong.

Now that it's finished what do you think of Superman: Space Age? Will it persist as an evergreen standalone a la All Star? Or will it be forgotten?

No clue what it's long term reception will be, but folks, this is one of my favorite Superman stories. I'm not good at critiquing art so I just want to start this off by saying Mike Allred's work here is worth the price tag alone. I've dreamt of seeing him draw a Superman book for ages, and he did not disappoint me here, particularly loved how he always gave Lois different outfits.

"Dark" Superman stories face a tough balancing act. They must take Superman into territory he doesn't often go to, and they must do so without breaking the character. Superman at heart is an optimistic story. To the question of "can a powerful man be good?", he is supposed to be an affirmative response. How then can that spirit of optimism and idealism be present in a story where the pitch is "Earth is fucked and going to die, and there's nothing Superman can do to prevent that"? Defying expectations, Russell treats that kind of pitch as an opportunity to reconstruct Superman where others would use it to deconstruct him.

A question the book returns to again and again over the course of the three issues is what should Superman be doing with his powers? Clark himself is eager to get off the farm and see the world. Jor-El supports his eagerness and expects him to be Earth's champion. Pa Kent tries to tamper down his enthusiasm. Lois grills him on whether his heroics are misaimed and his gifts could be better applied in other ways. Brainiac chides him for wasting his time on humanity when the Anti-Monitor is coming to annihilate the universe. It's a question many Superman writers have taken a stab at answering, but Russell gives an answer that I love: Sure there are bigger problems that Clark needs to address, but the smaller problems he solves have a meaning too.

Helping and interacting people on an individual basis let's Superman show people that someone cares. That someone viewed them as individually having worth, rather than only being concerned with the larger picture. And he also helps people simply because he enjoys doing that. Russell points out that the simpler pleasures in life, whether that's eating a good meal or rescuing a cat out of a tree, are sources of strength that support us in our quests to overcome life's big hurdles. Someone taking the time out to enjoy those simpler pleasures is nothing to be chided for, especially since it doesn't stop Superman from saving the Earth multiple times over the course of the story. He prevented nuclear war! He fended off Brainiac! He stopped an asteroid! Superman was able to save people on the large scale and the small scale just fine for years, up until the end.

Speaking of saving people, the central question of the story is how do you solve the trolley problem? If the only way to save five people is to kill one, do you do it? Batman says yes, but you kill the one to save the five out of defiance. Someone tied five people to the track and they want those five people to die. By diverting the trolley you give that person the finger and deny them what they want. This outlook plays into Batman's ending, where he gets the Joker killed in order to save the kids, killing one to save five. However Batman overlooked something critical in his solution to the trolley problem: what if someone didn't want to kill the five? What if instead they only wanted to kill the one, but didn't want to do it themselves, and merely used five people in order to force another to kill the one for them? This is what Lex does, he doesn't want the kids dead, he wants Bruce Wayne dead, and Bruce sacrificing himself just ends up giving Lex what he wants. Batman's solution is a failure because he ended up playing right into Lex's hands.

In contrast, Superman believes that you should try and save all six, even if you fail. When the cynics and the corrupt are firmly in charge, that's when you need people who aspire to do more than the world says they can. Superman's solution is a critical factor in his ending as well. His idealistic attempt to save everyone, Project Humanity, diverted his attention away from the world for a little while. Some people died because Superman was trying to save everyone instead of simply saving what he already could. In the end though, Superman is vindicated because his efforts save more than he ever could have otherwise. With the DNA of everyone on the planet, he was able to send said DNA to another Earth when the Anti-Monitor finally destroyed his home universe. Kal becomes Jor-El, a desperate scientist on a doomed planet who sends the last remnant of his species to another world in hopes that they can survive. And just like Kal once beat the odds and made it, humanity makes the trip and is resurrected by another Earth's Superman. Unlike his father Superman managed to save his people, even if he couldn't save his planet. Reminds me of Reed Richards in Hickman's Secret Wars epic, Clark and Reed both couldn't win, but they did find a way to not lose.

It's not a perfect story, and some of the flaws do grate me. While the focus on Batman does play an important role in setting up the ending, at times it feels like Russell's focus is spread too thin. Really I think he had enough material for a companion Batman: Space Age mini, and just tried to fold it into this book. Contrast between Superman and Batman's answer to the trolley thought experiment is needed for how it sets up the ending, but I don't think we needed as many pages focusing on Bruce as we got. Plus this is just a personal issue, but I found it disappointing that Clark and Lex never interact at all in this story, with Batman being more of a personal foe for Lex than Superman. Batman is the one who exposes Lex's plot in the first issue, and ultimately it's Bruce Wayne whom Lex targets when he gets out of prison. Russell writes such a great Lex that I was disappointed we didn't get to see him write any Clark/Lex interactions.

Outside of that big complaint? Love this. Adore the Mike Allred art which is gorgeous and which I desperately want to see an Absolute edition of. Appreciate Russell giving us a darker Superman story that talks about big serious philosophical issues, and doesn't give easy answers. It's a story that even now still sticks with me, especially the tragedy of the ending. Clark and all of the originals are dead, just like how the other Superman isn't the same guy as the "main" Superman, the people he recreated aren't the originals. Not since I've read For The Man Who Has Everything have I gotten such a bittersweet ending to a Superman story. Fantastic book and definitely one I will come back to in the future.

I think something pertinent, that I hope occurs to the devs or reaches them somehow, is that SoS games do not need to be AAA productions. It feels like a lot of development time and effort went into pursuing certain “next gen” trends: open world, extensive customization, higher graphical fidelity. All very costly things that maybe some types of people consider “standard” now, and they weren’t BAD at the basic thing of it; I think, personally, that the individual pieces and models look great. I loved the shading and textures on the models. But bokumono games have never been really high budget affairs for how much of a classic they are, and in the end, fans really didn’t care about being able to run seamlessly across 3 farm zones or having nice looking individual tree models or whatever. Some people did really cool things with the customization, but most people found it too limited and cumbersome anyways; everything was arranged in tiny rigid blocks with lots of restrictions in an enclosed and uneven perimeter, there wasn’t actually that much variety in style of individual props nor enough to create unique pairings, you needed to design around having a ton of makers, and to account for resource spawns in the “open world” plain. It’s not something you should add without the manpower to make it not just a gimmick, but an integeral, massive part of the game. You cannot half-ass freeball customization, that kills the point of it.

Instead, they could have not cared about making it “seamless” and designed interesting, enclosed locales, something they’d always been good at; you load into a map and it looks interesting and cute with nonuniform topography, bridges to unlock, landmarks to poke around in, fishing spots and harvestable resources that made sense or were exciting to find because they were specific and felt like “part” of the world. They could have not cared about making high def models and focused on stylization and setbuilding; it’s okay if the bushes and rocks look sort of crunchy if they’re a part of an overall beautifully constructed world/scenery/set that feels like it has a history to it. And all of this would have likely been much easier to optimize, and they wouldnt spend so many resources trying to battle framerate and load issues on what was, ultimately, not a very memorable looking or impressively designed game. And then without all the burdensome baubles hanging off the very skeleton of the thing, they’d be free to put energy into things people DO care about: complex events and character behaviors that dont have to rigidly fit the game’s technical confines, more outfit and body variety that didn’t need to be “perfect”, events and ceremonies that felt special because it’s just way more lightweight to make a whole bunch of different but lovely things. A bunch of hand drawn portraits are typically cheaper for the effect they can provide than hd, varied 3d models with unique animations; which, you NEED to make it look good. People play these games for the way you can find meaning and depth in something outwardly simple; this is the entire spirit. Not the opposite, where you play something that looks shiny and new but has no substance.

& they need to stop thinking kids can’t handle a bit of substance. It is okay if life isn’t perfect in these made up worlds and sometimes things are hard to make sense of or just happen, like people and animals and towns dying, and relationships not working out, and people not always having the best intentions, and having some setbacks and things you can’t do sometimes, things you can’t control because you’re just some humble farmer trying to save a town from depopulation. This series popularized “life sims” for a reason. What is the point of these games if it feels like everyone just spawned into the setting the same time as you did and only exist to tell you nice but empty things

Same person as the ask about the collab rant: I’m only saying what I did because I cleared the 150k mark yesterday and am finally free of event, despite setbacks. So technically I’m done, but BOY did I wish I was a day ahead. I’m a maths person, so calculating the optimal way to play comes naturally, your advice about using weak cards to play 0 LP games that still level up EXP/affection/item drop level seems obvious, but international fans who cannot read Japanese probably have yet to figure things out.

For anyone reading this: for collab events, ALWAYS use the eligible card with highest overall stats even if it’s not your favourite boy. If he is not fully maxed out in level AND board, make sure you keep feeding him after each game. If you have more than 1 card with the same overall high stat, use the one that has the same attribute as the song. If you have control of the whole team, pick the most powerful 7, and ditto for guest. Don’t think too hard about attribute unless you have an excess of maxed out SR and UR. The end score directly impacts your resource drop! So if you have newly pulled a SR or UR and it’s at level 1, use the resources earned from your best team and best item drop level song AND highest possible full combo difficulty to farm the levels/board until you can power the rare card up. When it becomes your top 7, put it on the team and replace the weakest member. Avoid duplicate members where possible, to ensure 7 different boys get affection increases per game. If you have booster items, always use it on 5 or 10 LP game. If you stuff your combo up during a high stakes game, pause then quit the game and try again - your items and LP will not disappear.

Resources are unevenly distributed by type, board items are limited in the item exchange and LP does not increase with rank, so play strategically. Try to do a talk with each boy 3 times daily, even the max affection level ones, as each can give you 3 mission points, that’s a daily maximum of 54. Try not to put on new outfits for boys who have max affection, go get keys from the board and unlock a new affection ceiling and come back to it, otherwise the affection increase of a new outfit is wasted.

I’ve been wanting to scream this advice from the rooftops since 1 month ago, so I’m sorry for the rant, I really hope fans who are free to play can take advantage of the system and lessen the time they have to spend grinding. Gacha games are predatory by nature, so make sure you get your time and moneys worth!

YES TO ALL OF THIS!!! I think a lot of people were SL players and understand the gist, but like yes! Play efficiently! Especially if you're not gonna spend money! I don't go full calculating on it, but I pay enough attention to do it enough in a lazy way. Also plenty of people in an old SL Discord and some other servers have been sharing tips after they did the math.

Like I'm using a level 70 SR Ai for the whole event because even though he's not my favorite QN member, he's my strongest card eligible! And I made sure to level him up right away. His board....I only just finished. But I think everyone is universally suffering in getting medium gems right now lol.

I think the only thing I'm not being super efficient on is the bond stuff. I'm too lazy to get all into adding that to my routine. I just do my tapping for the daily mission and maybe remember to grab Otoya because I would like to work on him too and don't have ANY usable card of him orz.
