I've been binging Batman Beyond recently (Terry ily so much) and thought about how- bc of the JLU twist which I think isn't even canon to the comics BB verse but shhh bare with me- he'd technically be Damian's half brother??? Which is just so ridiculously soap opera to me. I need them to interact in a silly time travel adventure so bad you don't even understand (ID in alt)

there are many things about hazel's povs that have an intensely de-racialized vibe to them (read: divorced from the black girl experience) but I think any black person will tell you that the most obvious sign is the complete lack of attention paid to her hair

like firstly:

she's from the 1930s her hair was definitely getting permed and straightened (it was not acceptable to just wear your natural hair out back then. optics + cultural assimilation/you'll be hard pressed to find photos of black american girls with unstraightened hair in that time period unless they're from like..... harlem)

I do believe that marie was straightening it for her For A Time but then she became more neglectful and stopped so hazel had to do it herself. I'm almost positive that hazel wouldn't have even been permitted to set foot in her school building without straightening it because that's just how much of an expectation it was

ok she comes back from the dead. what's she doing to her hair now bc it's not just gonna be cutesy effortless curls falling over her shoulder no matter what the length is

how does she feel about living in a time period where natural black hair is more accepted (read: more, absolutely not fully)

there are no black people around her At All. in fact she's around a lot of white people on the argo (+nico) so that would probably be giving her some intense feelings of double consciousness (look this term up if you don't know what it means) and that would inform how she feels about her hair

theoretically she ought to be wearing her hair in braids for simplicity's sake but I think it's more likely that she would cling to what she knows (perming/straightening) because it's not easy for a 14 year old girl (PSA hazel is 14.5 in hoo not 13 btw 👍) to go from assimilating to deeply-ingrained white hair beauty standards to just proudly wearing a distinctly black hairstyle all by herself

mind you black women and girls can do whatever they want with their hair and straightening/perming it does not always/have to come from a place of self-hatred or whatever but in this particular case back then straightening one's hair was political And a survival tactic. it was as normal as brushing your teeth. it was enforced through dominant cultural messagings about the Absolute Necessity of conforming to white conventions of beauty. if you don't understand then think of it similarly to how you'd think of 1930s women needing to be perpetually dolled up and modestly dressed in order to be considered "good women" and anyways I'm just saying that this would be a lot to unpack for a 14 year old girl so hazel's probably just continuing to do this impractical thing (straightening her hair all the time) like 60% out of habit and 20% out of shame and 20% she doesn't know what else to do

something something about a missed potential character arc regarding all of this and in general there's so little mind paid to race in hazel's povs which is just ridiculous to me because a black girl from the jim crow era should have at least a few feelings about where she fits into modern society even if that society is camp jupiter. rick demonstrates his capacity to talk about how his characters feel about their race most notably in the kane chronicles so I don't think was too much to ask for. see this quote from an early son of neptune chapter:

^ like....... hazel's feelings of out-of-place-ness are There in the text and important to take note of when understanding her character (note that she's been there for like a year already and she still feels like she doesn't belong) but the emphasis is always put on her Being from a different time or Being undead and is never put on her out-of-place-ness regarding her race as a black girl from segregation times who is literally so out-of-place in this weird post-racial camp jupiter society. it feels like such an obvious thing to consider so its glaring absence really bugs me when I reread her povs and it bugs me when her hair is never talked about by extension because It Matters

you might be thinking "well she had a lot going on and she's not a superficial person maybe she just didn't care what was going on with her hair" and my response is simply that Black girls don't get to "not care" about their hair it is not the same thing as a white person going to school with bedhead it's not the same thing At All (if you aren't black then chances are you've never actually seen what untouched black hair looks like in the morning), especially when it's been beaten into your head for your entire life that your hair is ugly and you have to "do something to it" for it to be acceptable (and again...... she's from the 1930s so that feeling is magnified like 50x over). remember that perpetually dolled up modest 1930s woman I mentioned previously. picture her time traveling to camp jupiter of all places in 2010 and struggling to drop all of her makeup/hairstyling routines and internalized misogyny and conceptualizations of what women are "supposed" to be. this is the kind of fascinating character exploration that we really missed out on with hazel (and tbh regardless of her race she was never believably written as someone from the 1930s. I don't think rick even really tried to be honest)

you might also be wondering "how was rick supposed to know/attempt to portray any of that" and then my second answer is that If you're going to write a character who is not the same race as you then you should do some research and we have the internet now so research has never been easier 👍 this would be especially important to do if that person is a poc from the jim crow era I think! (he could have at least googled black hair 1930s)

anyways what I choose to believe (this is pure fanfiction) is that during hazel's first year at camp jupiter (remember that she was there for about a year before son started) nico would have helped her figure something out after observing her distress over her hair c: like they both secretly watched youtube videos on black hairstyles circa 2010 and then they got attacked by monsters for using a laptop (neither of them know how to use a laptop but he's trying his best for her) but then after killing them he helped her do her hair as something she likes that is easy to maintain <3 (I could also see reyna doing this because she surely knows a thing or two from her spa days)

Quinlan's backstory (which is mostly legends canon but I don't think we've gotten much new canon backstory for him) is complicated, and we don't really know how much time he spent in the temple or not and since he doesn't have a new canon backstory I sort of get why he kinda just gets shuffled into Obi-Wans creche clan - HOWEVER

I think there should be more fics of baby Quinlan being forcefully adopted by Obi-Wan and Bant and everyone. They're all still initiates, and Quinlan despite being under the age of 10 is already a Padawan!! Which means he doesn't really need a creche clan, Tholme has been handling all of his education, but he probably takes some initiate classes when on Coruscant. Just them seeing this too young Padawan and being like.... New crechemate let's fucking go! Baby Quinlan would not know how to handle it.

Like not only just so he has connections on Coruscant and friends, I'm also just imagining the trouble they'd talk him into. Sneaking him into the creche for a sleepover. Making sure he knows all the best secret passages in the Temple. Convincing him to use his psychometry to get gossip on their rivals.

Like Quinlan naturally was a bit of a trouble maker, but he doesn't often have accomplices hyping him up and digging the hole deeper with him. Doubly funny because like, Obi-Wan was a pretty rambunctious pre-teen and his other initiate friends were also pretty silly and fun. I just think we're missing opportunities not having more fun with Quinlan's Legends backstory wrt his friendships and relationships within the Order.

"Monster" from Distant Lands: Obsidian works so well as a Cygate theme

It works especially well for my headcanoned version of Cyclonus—who is the one singing if it wasn't obvious.

In my version of events, he was a cybertronian from the golden age, a crew member of Nova Prime's ship, the Proudstar. When the Proudstar was sucked into the Dead Universe, Nova Prime sent Cyclonus to bring the Matrix back to Cybertron because he was the fastest person on board. Unfortunately, one of the Proudstar's engines was damaged as it got sucked in, and the resulting explosion badly damaged Cyclonus and sent him and the Matrix hurdling through space in different directions. A search party would eventually find the Matrix and return it to Cybertron, but Cyclonus's body was already long gone. His floating corpse eventually crossed paths with Unicron, who restored Cyclonus's spark and upgraded his body in return for becoming his herald.

Eons later, Rodimus Prime uses the Matrix of Leadership to destroy Unicron to save Earth and Cybertron. As a side effect, the heralds of Unicron (including but not limited to Nemesis Prime, Galvatron, and Cyclonus) are all freed from his dominion. Cyclonus begins to try to reintegrate into Cybertronian society after so many years. The Great War is newly over, and Cybertron is still rebuilding. The details of what goes on next are yet to be worked out, I'm not sure if Rodimus Prime will stay on Cybertron or set out on the Lost Light, but in any case, I know that Cyclonus and Tailgate will meet soon after Unicron's destruction and their relationship will play out from there broadly the same as it did in IDW.

I'm kinda tired of dungeon meshi fans blatantly misinterpreting Kabru's goals, motivations, and character so they can ship him with Laios...like obviously it's awesome if you enjoy Laikabu but can you nooot twist Kabru's intentions for involving himself with the guy who constantly triggers his monster trauma and pisses him off so bad he gets brain damage so that he turns into "the guy who wants to suck Laios's dick" as his entire character? I've even seen people cut off Kabru's words to make it seem like he is admiring Laios because it would disrupt that narrative

ive got smth for you!! evan and pandora- how long do they share a room? i feel like at some point they’d think they want separate rooms but then just immediately hate it and go crawling back

i think evan & pandora would share everything (a room, a bed, their clothes, etc) far into adulthood, perhaps a little beyond what's considered appropriate. this is most interesting to me in the context of rosekiller— bc of his sister, evan is extremely used to the kind of quiet domestic symbiosis that comes with living with a partner.

it's funny because EVAN is the socially stunted, friendless one. and yet he does all the little things without thinking twice: always grabbing a second mug, leaving a space for barty, predicting what he needs without thinking. evan might even be pathological with it, always subconsciously making room for his missing Second Half.

it's a really staggering experience for canon barty, who grew up alone & with profound abuse. having someone in his Private (Domestic) Space is a major adjustment for him, but evan is sooo attuned to making room for him (because of pandora) that it becomes something barty's capable of. i think about barty, who had to sneak around specific floorboards to get a glass of water from the kitchen. i think of evan, who leaves an extra one out for him without thinking.

rick becomes super into multiversal travel after prime introduces him to it, very hyperfocused on it and the opportunities it presents (like how the gotron episode establishes that rick can get carried away unless someone reels him in). diane might initially be supportive of this but as rick's appearances around the house become more shoddy, she gets fed up and they separate. after a much more complex deterioration of their relationship obviously rick considers this a win at the time, since he's now free to dick around and do whatever he wants, essentially adopts prime's life philosophy and hangs around him. him and prime would eventually have some sort of falling out, which leaves rick extremely bitter and annoyed. he ends up spending most of his life alone, still living by his pop nihilistic ideals because he thinks this is what he wants. eventually he'd still end up squatting in prime's dimension and realizes that he actually Prefers this family life. his infatuation with prime could develop into resentment when he realizes that he essentially robbed rick of a comfortable, idealistic life

Hey.. I finally watched a part of the anime S2's final ep(I needed to get Hikaru's color schemes)and I'm getting this..hunch..

Remember how the final ep's title is "Wish"? Remember how anime S1's ED, Mephisto is all about a "Wish" too?

Everyone made wishes at the shrine, didn't they? But none of them made the same wish mentioned in Mephisto: "I want my beloved's life to return. I want to see them again." I honestly think it's HIM out of all the characters that'd make that sort of wish, if anyone. If this guy has a wish, IT'S GOING TO BE EXACTLY THAT. HE'D WANT AI TO BE WITH HIM. HE'D WANT TO SEE HER AGAIN. What else would he want??

Hey, then could it really be that THIS guy made that sort of wish at a shrine or something but since that was an impossible type of wish, the god=star he made wishes on twisted it to make it seem like it could be accomplished if conditions are met and thus, THAT'S what's drove him into insanity?? The gods do seem to have some sort of power.

So.. didn't watch the ep in full but Ruby's "wish" is being emphasized in that ep, isn't it? Her actions in that ep must be her actions to make that a reality/what brings her closer to that particular wish she's made? and that had her shift pretty dramatically, under the influence of the black star? I do think that one may have the power to grant people's wishes but disastrously and unpredictably (which is why I keep bringing up that absurdity god mentioned in 144)

Kamiki's appearance near the end of that anime ep may indicate the same thing's been happening to him, that HE'S another character that's also made a wish. He did mention of wishes an awful lot as he appeared in front of both his children 147 and 153. AND that what he's being is in accordance to that wish. That part is quite confirmed, I mean, even if his analogy is very weird for your normal person to think of, he thought what he was doing was helping him get closer to Ai and feel her presence. This must have been HIS wish.

I think he must have grown insane after having made a wish to see Ai again. The two songs, Fatal and Mephisto basically have their speakers desiring the same wish in essence, they really, really want to meet this one important person in their life that's gone and they're willing to do anything to make that happen. That's why I believe it must be Kamiki who's responsible for the songs. When you look at the songs closely, there is an entity they are making the wish to, and that's a star. and if you look at Fatal, a dark one like that.

I will not stop to struggle on this stage I want to get closer to the only [ai] This foreordained destiny It's the darkness that fell out from the light of that star

I think;; he may have started to believe in this kind of "destiny" that doing whatever he's been doing would bring him closer to Ai after having made a wish on a star... that's what's happened!!! The star acted to fulfill his wish but it's something that couldn't happen in reality so it could have acted on his thought processes

If all my desires came true, oh, how I wish I could attain that I want to see you I wish upon the stars

あらゆる望みの総てを叶えたら　ああ果たせたら あなたに会いたい 星に願いをかけて

The bolded part of the lyric. I believe that's what this character's "wish" is.

If life returns to you, if it reaches you I don't care what happens to me But not every wish will be fulfilled And if that's not realized I shall become you

あなたに命が戻るなら　届くなら わたしはどうなろうと構わないのに どうやら総ては叶わない 叶わないならばあなたになりたい

and then it starts shifting to this other desire because it isn't a wish that can be granted.

This literally starts breaking him down.

that part of the lyric sounds like "Hikaru", so I always thought this song or at least this segment of the song had something to do with him ever since I listened to it.

I don't think this theory would be too much of a stretch because that's what's been happening in both songs. This guy WASN'T the type to do these things before. He REALLY wasn't; Ai is worried about him you know? He's the one guy she wanted to live forever with, you know? If I'm the author, I never make a character like that say such things without a reason. This was a guy that allowed her to say these things about. And he's completely lost it now. I don't think it's natural. I really think the extent of his change can only be possible if there's some possession or brainwashing that's involved. The black star does seem to have that sort of effect to a degree. It proves effective in terms of granting the user of its wants, but they drift far away from their usual kind selves as they do.

Even if there aren't some godly powers involved, Hikaru probably became destroyed because he had a desire that practically is impossible to achieve. But some beings can grant wishes and revive people in this manga. It's been presented from the very first chapter. Things start becoming more complicated in that case, those beings definitely would have to do with him one way or the other because it either intertwines or clashes with his wants.

In short,

Hikaru probably wished "to see Ai again".

and the entity that he wished to may have twisted him into become the person he is now.
