The Hate U Give- Book review

There are SPOILERS in the review so do consider it before reading! 

I found this book one afternoon after reading the news on CBS. I just thought I may need to do something. Signing petition, posting on social media, etc just didn’t feel ample for me. Therefore, I decided to educate myself by reading The Hate U Give by Angie Thomas. I read it to realize how aligning the book is with the current event going on with George Floyd’s death: Things have not been changing at all. That we’re still living under that predicament, that prejudice, and that “The Hate U Give” whether it’s police brutality or racism: The Black community is still living under that anguish. 

Angie Thomas did a really good job with portraying character Starr-- a juvenile, earnest, and intrepid lady. For me, Starr was a perfect fit as a central role for this book. All of her’s reaction from witnessing the deaths of her two best friends, seeing the oppression that her parents had to through, and the internal conflict that she endured was utterly reasonable. Thomas did not exaggerate Starr with an exceptional bravery or instantly stand up for her best friend who she witnessed his death. For Starr, it was a process of accumulating courage and that process sometimes could be too callous for a teenager like Starr.

Khalil’s death was the inception of how her two worlds--Williamson and Garden Heights-- started to crumble and blend into each other. Something that Starr always wished to remain distinctive. Starr went from a pure and innocent girl to realize the uneasiness when her two worlds begin to collide. She feels guilty to befriend with the rich kids at Williamson, ashamed of herself when dating a white boyfriend to the her lament stage she was experiencing whenever she sees Natasha and Khalil in her nightmares. All of the images just keep repeating in her heads like a tape that she couldn’t rewind. Starr begins to not only notice the clash between her and her boyfriend Chris but also the clash between the difference in her parents: Big Mav and Lisa. They both love their communities yet Lisa’s love for the community can’t replace her love for her kids. Unlike Big Mav, he upholds another ideal, an ideal to raise his kids become strong and remains faithful to their roots.  Therefore, the tension arises between them in term of settling in Garden Heights or moving to a safer place. Big Mav’s apprehension is not only the predicament to contribute Garden Height when he is far away from it but also his perturbation of losing his identity, losing his kids’s authenticity. He has already traded a part of Starr and Seven’s (Starr’s step brother) true selves when deciding to let them study at Williamson; he couldn’t back down this time to entirely eviscerate their identities. He desperately couldn’t. As the tension between Big Mav and Lisa goes on, which also embodies the internal conflict Starr faced at school with her friend: Hailey

Hailey is an epitome of the upper class who are unconsciously racist. Hailey herself is never aware of her xenophobia yet as no one has ever let her know. Not Starr, not Maya, and definitely not people at Williamson. Therefore, the tepid attitude of Hailey led her to proclaim that “chicken” comment on Starr and how she said Khalil will die eventually even if that police officer didn’t kill him. The fight between Hailey and Starr is that final push to the rupture bond in their friendship. I saw this as a tipping point for Starr to eventually escape from her safe shell and join the advocating group for Khalil’s  justice. Unlike the people at her school, they always talk about race when it suits their story, when it’s convenient for them. NOT WHEN IT MATTERS. Starr has realized how long she has been in her shelter, ashamed and fearful of how the world would react, how her life would be ventured on the brink of hazard if they knew she was the witness. Yet if Khalil was in her shoes, he’d never succumb and fight for her.

Starr’s fight for Khalil is her excursion of accumulating her own bravery. She joined the National TV interview even though she knows it’ll put her and her family in the eyes of the public as well as the King Lord gang. She accepts it. Starr also experiences hardship with the way she should view her uncle: Carlos. He’s another father to Starr when Maverick (Big Mav) was in jail. The push and pull string within Starr’s heart tells her that her uncle is a good person but she couldn’t cease herself from feeling irate, fearful towards the uncle whom she loves endearingly since she was child. Because he belongs to that system too. Because he’s a police too. She drowns herself in the fear if her uncle would pull a trigger and shoot just like the officer One- Fifteen did. She couldn’t help drawing the connection between uncle Carlos and the officer One- Fifteen who killed her best friend. The action of Starr joining the riot and standing up to speak her voice was the most powerful detail in the story. She wasn’t just Starr, she wasn’t just Black, or Khalil’s best friend. She was a life! An alive human being who deserves the rights to live. And so does Khalil and so does Natasha and so do many black lives who had died unjustly under the hands of police. This detail has pushed the story to its climax; all the outrage, the anguish, the voice are spoken and listened despite it was in tear gas and oppression of the police deployed by the government. The rampant hate, that “The Hate You Give Little Infants F*** Everybody” will be spoken today, tomorrow, and forever. That’s what Starr decided when she raised her voice and knows that her face will appear on national TV news. 

As long as we keep speaking our voice, as long as we keep fighting for the names that we have lost in the past, that we’re losing now, and we’re protecting in the future, it matters. Their lives matter, our lives matter, and BLACK LIVES MATTER.

I think a lot of people would love to have a little more variety in their characters! We have a lot of 16 and 17 year old protagonist but rarely anyone slightly older!

♦️♦️June Wrap Up (1/2)♦️♦️⁣ ⁣ Have you guys found your favourite read of June yet? ⁣ ⁣ I'm a tiny bit early but I just realized I might have went overboard with the number of books I read this month. 🙈⁣ ⁣ So here's a quick wrap up of the first twelve books! ⁣ ⁣ 🔹The Winners Trilogy-- The series is so underrated. It's got politics, betrayal, forbidden romance and so much angst! The writing is beautiful and it's slow burn in the beginning. 10/10 would recommend. 😍⁣ ⁣ 🔹Even The Darkest Stars duology-- Hello there, book that left me a sobbing mess. This series was the biggest surprise I had this year! It's chronically underrated and thinking of the ending of the first book still gives me palpitations.😭 Y'all should give it a shot. ⁣ Ayesha at Last-- A P&P retelling with a Muslim twist. I'm afraid that while I loved the first half, the overabundance of plot lines and presence of several stereotypical characters ruined the book for me. ⁣ ⁣ 🔹Song of the Current duology-- Confession, I'm still in the middle of the second book but it's an okay read. I picked it up for the enemies to lovers trope and badass pirates but something just feels lacking. 🤷🏻‍♀️⁣ ⁣ 🔹Ace of Shades-- I saw Six of Crows on the back and I had to try it! 😂⁣ Basically, a fun read but predictable. A bit confusing but still fresh! I'd give it 3/5 maybe? ⁣ ⁣ 🔹Stormdancer-- The first of The Lotus War trilogy and I buddy read it with @books.bags.burgers ! The first half is slow but once it gets going you're golden. 😍⁣ ⁣ 🔹THUG-- Beautiful and relevant. A contemporarie I'd always recommend.⁣ ⁣ 🔹 Book Love-- Adorable and so so relatable! I'm half convinced the author must have been spying on me. 😂⁣ ⁣ And that's it! Now I have to get back to real life. Dammit. 😅⁣ ⁣ Farha out! *tries to dab gracefully. But fails. I finally got to watch The Hate U Give movie ... I thought the book was a powerful message. They took everything important about the book, expanded upon it and only made it better. Everyone needs to read this book and watch this movie to get a message that’s so important in this world today.

It's #thehateyougive by @angiethomas , I had bought the Kindle edition long back when this book was going round in #bookstagram but never got around to reading it. No regrets! For now is the time.
